Domesticity Rocks – Weekend Pursuits – HuffPost UK

Me and my lovely fella walked into Seaton Delaval Hall in Northumberland a couple of weekends ago.

We proudly flashed our shiny new National Trust membership cards and, in that moment, everything changed. And it felt so good.

We became part of something. A new tribe. The National Trust membership crew. We reached the gold standard in weekend pursuits and we're seriously buzzing about it. #SquadGoals

But we're not alone in this realisation that domesticity rocks.

I grew up wanting to be punk rock (in reality, I was as close to anarchy as Trump is to reason) and it seems my punk rock idols were actually early adopters of domestic bliss.

John Lydon started hanging out in tartan pyjamas and spreading Country Life butter on his toast. And these days, Kelley Deal is as famous for her knitted bags as she is for playing lead guitar in The Breeders. So I'm following in some pretty impressive footsteps when I declare my love for cosy pyjamas, garden centres and early nights.

I think I started feeling the draw towards comfort over chaos back in my late 20s, when going for an early morning run with my good friend Jon on a Sunday morning, breathing in the fresh air, hearing the birds sing, feeling alive and, at the same time, feeling incredibly smug.

We were happily pounding the pavements in our Nike trainers while last night's dregs were lugging their hungover corpses into Jackson's supermarket for a packet of fags, some Nurofen and a can of Red Bull. (Yes, we were smug tossers. What of it?)

"My rapidly growing gardening club card points, National Trust membership and diverse collection of slippers are taking me on a journey in a definite direction. And I'm bloody loving it."

I asked my 18 year-old stepson recently what he thought of the fact that me and his dad, Chris, enjoy visits to stately homes, long walks and nights in with a pizza and the latest episode of Homeland. "I can see the merit in it. It's just... I like to live a bit more," he said.

He's just gone out clubbing. Before leaving he dyed his hair - again. I rolled my eyes and said, "You're dyeing it AGAIN?" As I reminded him to clean the dye off the sink afterwards, he repeated it in unison with me.

I then asked if he was going to take a coat with him. The look on his face said it all. I have turned into my mother.

Back when I was his age, I was often found tottering around the cold streets of Hull in open-toed heels and a PVC miniskirt. By the time he goes out, I'd have already probably puked up a cheap cocktail from Spiders nightclub, topped my levels back up at the bar, and then washed it down with a dirty hamburger from the dodgy van parked outside in the industrial estate.

My hair usually sported the remnants of five different packets of Shaders and Toners, and always felt like straw thanks to the endless bottles of Sun-In I bought from Superdrug.

So I should really thank my lucky stars that our boy is more sophisticated than we were at his age and give him a break. His idol is Chris Martin, not Courtney Love or both of Altern8 (sorry husband: I've outed your love of 90s commercial rave).

He's definitely more stylish than I ever was, can take his drink better than I ever did and - as far as I know - behaves much better too.

But THANK GOD I don't feel the need to go through all that again. Leaving the house at 10pm? I'm already tucked up in bed when he goes out.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I have some fun (if that's the right word) times to look back on, but it's incredibly soothing knowing that I can find spiritual enlightenment by taking a mindful walk under a clear blue sky rather than a dodgy mix of chemicals in a dirty pub toilet (the 90s made me do it).

Once upon a time, it was getting Glastonbury tickets through the door that made my eyes light up. Today, it's the quarterly Wyevale garden centre vouchers that I excitedly check the post for - and it's a bonus if they throw in a 2-4-1 on cream tea.

"We became part of something. A new tribe. We reached the gold standard in weekend pursuits and we're seriously buzzing about it."

After our visit to Seaton Delaval Hall, we drove further out into the countryside. We have a shared dream that in five years' time, we will live in a beautiful little village in the country, with nothing but a quaint little church, a snicket and a post office.

We'll have a little summerhouse where we can write, or curl up with a good book and one of our cats. Our hens will be free range and we'll be so far out in the sticks we might even get them a cockerel for company.

And that's just the outdoors. Inside there's cushions and candles, fairy lights and fresh flowers. These days, I even take the time to arrange them carefully in a nice vase instead of hurriedly plonking them in the sink along with old discarded tea bags.

Socialising is different too. When we get together with friends (with three weeks' notice, of course) it's usually for a cuppa and a piece of cake, a pub quiz or a board game.

I've yet to let go of my youthful rebelliousness in its entirety though. We'll choose Cards Against Humanity over Trivial Pursuit and I still can't quite cope with Radio 2 on a weekend (Show tunes? Never).

But my rapidly growing gardening club card points, National Trust membership and diverse collection of slippers are taking me on a journey in a definite direction. And I'm bloody loving it.

I'm heading into a new era of cool. Hygge and wholesomeness. Nature and nirvana. Slippers and... nah, I don't need to dress it up. I don't need to be 'on trend' or part of a Danish movement. Cos I don't really care any more.

Who's joining me for a cuppa and a bourbon?

Silicon Valley Recap Season 4, Episode 10, Server Error – slantmagazine

Server Error, the season-four finale of Silicon Valley, checks in with almost all the main characters in Pied Piper's orbit while setting the stage for two season-five showdowns: the battle between Richard (Thomas Middleditch) and Gavin (Matt Ross) for domination of the Internet and the fight for Richard's soul. Richard lurches in the general direction of ends-justify-the-means mogul-dom with exquisite clumsiness, bouncing back and forth between maniacal determination and dejected self-loathing as his team keeps pulling him back from the brinkJared (Zach Woods) appealing to his morals while Dinesh (Kumail Nanjiani) and Gilfoyle (Martin Starr) ride herd on his ego. Meanwhile, Gavin roars back into top predator mode with sociopathic ease, polishing off the amuse-bouche of Jack Barker (Stephen Tobolowsky) in one ravenous bite before making a beeline for Richard.

Pied Piper scores another accidental victory near the end of Server Error when they learn that their code has been kept alive by a bunch of smart refrigerators, but the episode begins with the spectacular blow-up of their last brief triumph. In the opening scene, Dinesh watches a viral video of a Hooli phone exploding, overloaded by the combination of Jack and Keenan's hastily doctored demo and Pied Piper's illegally installed software. In Hooli-Con, that disaster seemed to be just the latest in a long string of defeats snatched from the jaws of victory, but it threatens to be a deeper existential threat to Pied Piper in Server Error when it causes Jared, Richard's right-hand man and unofficial conscience, to resign, horrified as much by Richard's refusal to show remorse as by the damage done to the phones.

In the corporate-giant version of Richard's refusal to accept responsibility, Jack pins all the blame for the exploding phones on Gavin and Keenan. He also vows to replace all nine million affected Hooli phones from the market and replace them within the next three days, a goal so impossible that even the Chinese factory workers who make the phones refuse to do it. Their revolt is a hugely satisfying revenge fantasy, given all the reports of near-slave-labor conditions in Apple and Microsoft factories in China, but in true Silicon Valley fashion, it's played as comedy as well as drama.

Silicon Valley constantly draws on and deepens our understanding of its characters.

Jack looks ridiculous as he tries to give the workers a pep talk; he and all the workers wear white body suits that leave only their faces exposed against an antiseptically white background, like the sperm in Woody Allen's Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex. And the smash cut from Jack saying the title of his would-be-inspirational speech to a TV newswoman announcing that he's been taken hostage by the workers accentuates the gulf between the workers' blunt pragmatism and Jack's smug faith in his own bullshit.

That's not the episode's only nod to cultural insensitivity in the tech world. When Jared interviews an Asian-American candidate to replace him at Pied Piper, he segues from approvingly noting that she's fluent in Japanese to asking if she can be comfortable with casual racism. And Bachman (T.J. Miller) and Gavin are the ultimate ugly Americans as they dabble with spiritual enlightenment in Tibet. When Gavin's lama warns that he has to choose between enlightenment and ignorance, he stops for just one brief comic beat before opting for the latter. So it's particularly ludicrousthough also, in a way, oddly appropriatewhen Bachman, the eternal drifter, ends his time on the series stoned into immobility in an opium den as Gavin hands the owner enough money to keep him high for five years.

Silicon Valley has always excelled in character-driven comedy: sight gags, running jokes, and other bits that spring from or build on something we know about a character. There's plenty of that in this episode, like the way the mysterious Jared subverts expectations once again when Richard visits his condo to apologize. No doubt Richard expects to find Jared alone, as the rest of the Pied Piper crew almost always are when they're not with each other, but instead he's met by the sound of merry female laughter.

Meanwhile, Richard's lone sexual encounter in months, like Dinesh's short-lived affair with Mia, goes disastrously wrong as only a socially awkward sexual neophyte's can, earning him a black eye and probably losing him his only client. His desperate, undignified scuffle of a fight scene with Dan (Jake Broder) is a tasty bit of physical comedy, with Dan throwing Richard off his chair and Jared swiftly swooping in to save his boss. The way Richard boasts about the whole thing later to Gavin is even funnier, thanks to the former's mangled syntax and excruciatingly awkward body language, but it's also touching because his pride is so palpable, and so misplaced.

Bits like these are one of the many ways Silicon Valley earns its fans' dedication. A lesser series might deaden our interest by constantly reinforcing just one or two defining traits for each character, or by bombarding us with canned jokes. Silicon Valley's humor is both physically and verbally agile, and it constantly draws on and deepens our understanding of its characters, the relationships between them, and the world in which they operate.

Somizi says he has HIV, cancer or diabetes | The Citizen – Citizen

In an interview with City Press published on Sunday, popular entertainer Somizi Mhlongo spoke about his upcoming memoir, Dominoes: Unbreakable Spirit.

He writes in the book that he was diagnosed with a terminal disease in 1999 that had the capacity to take his life within six months and is incurable. He says he wont name the illness for personal reasons.

Somizi apparently debated whether it was worth seeking treatment and living with the chronic illness. The 44-year-old maintains that hes never felt the need to tell people what his ailment actually is.

I havent had the courage or the need to say which one it is between cancer, HIV and diabetes.

He was apparently told he only had a month to live, but God had other plans for him more than six years ago.

Somizi explained that by cultivating a positive mind-set he was able to rise above his affliction despite numerous days when it all felt like too much.

He also reveals how difficult his life became afterhe was falselyaccused of sexually assaulting aman and needed to go on anti-depressants to deal with the stress. His cars were repossessed, his mortgage was in arrears and he was completely broke after jobs in the entertainment industry apparently dried up.

Today, the choreographer is an Idols judge, has his own reality show and numerous promotion and endorsement deals.

The only sustainable solution for his life, he says, had been to stop drinking and having casual sex and turning to prayer and spiritual enlightenment.

He also credits Rhema Bible Church and friends there for giving him peace.

Despite how surprising it may seem, Somizi maintains hes never taken drugs despite havingnotoriously drug-troubled friend Brenda Fassie (who died of an overdose) often offering him narcotics.

Mandoza and Bricks allegedly also did cocaine in his presence.

Here’s all you need to know about the King of Puri – Odisha Sun Times

Bhubaneswar: Chief servitor of Lord Jagannath, Gajapati Maharaj Dibyasingh Deb is a reserved and private person. He comes to limelight mostly during the grand festival of Ratha Jatra.

Odisha Sun Times brings to you some lesser known facts about the king of Puri:

2. Originally named Kamarnaba Dev, he was the eldest son of king Birakishor Deb and queen Suryamani Pata Mahadei.

3. His father Gajapati Birakishor Deb died in the middle of the car festival in the year 1970 and Dibyasingh Deb had to ascend the throne on that fateful day itself.

4. The king of Puri is not allowed to participate in any cremation ceremony. A brahmin boy is adopted by the royal family who discharges these duties on the kings behalf.

5. His schooling was from Convent School (1957-1959), Puri and Rajkumar College (1959-1968), Raipur in Chhattisgarh. He then went on to pursue his graduation in History from the prestigious St. Stephens College (1969-1972), then LLB from Law Faculty from University of Delhi (1971-1975). His last degree was an LLM from the reputed North Western University of Law (1975-1976), Chicago.

6. Amidst all his studies, he used to dispense his duties as the chief servitor annually during Rath Yatra, except the year when he was abroad in 1975-76.

7. In spite of having served the Lord for so many years he realised that he was not completely spiritually awakened. After completing his masters in the field of law, he faced a dilemma of choosing between his responsibility of being the king and the tempting profession of being a lawyer.

8. According to Dibyasingh Deb, he attained religious and spiritual enlightenment because of three reasons: Saat grantha,Saatguru and Saatsanga.

9. Reading theBhagavad Gitamade him realise how futile his education was. He said to himself, Everything else is secondary, serving the lord is primary. All his scruples were cleared gradually and he acquired mental peace.

10. His encounter with two spiritual gurus namely Swami Chidananda Saraswati Maharaj and Chinmayananda Saraswati Maharaj introduced him to the world of meditation, yoga and pranayama. This is how he gained heightened consciousness about his true purpose in this world.

11.From being a Stephanian to having studied abroad, Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingh Deb has now metamorphosed into a traditional, spiritually en-kindled human being whose whole life is dedicated to the service of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra.

Dalai Lama begins two-day Boston visit with joy and blessings – The Boston Globe

Craig F. Walker/Globe Staff

The Dalai Lama greets Jampa Phunkhang of Medford after arriving at the Hyatt Regency Boston in Boston on Saturday.

Saturday was a day of joy for Buddhists from across the region, as the Dalai Lama arrived in Boston and greeted the faithful who had gathered on the street outside his hotel.

More than 400 people, most of them affiliated with the Tibetan Association of Boston, packed sidewalks along Bedford and Chauncy streets, where Boston police and private security agents cordoned off the intersection and kept the crowds behind barriers as they waited for the spiritual leader.

We are so happy and fortunate that he visits Boston, said Sonam Doma, 43, a Malden resident who was born in India to Tibetan parents.

Like many of those present, Doma wore a traditional Tibetan garment, in her case a colorful chupa that she said was characteristic of the capital city of Lhasa.

Forget yesterday's news. Get what you need today in this early-morning email.

It means a lot, because it is a blessing, Doma said of the Dalai Lamas visit. Tibetan people believe he is a living Buddha.

The spiritual leader greeted the faithful who had gathered on the street outside his hotel.

After arriving about 4 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency, where he will stay during his surprise two-day visit to Boston, the Dalai Lama emerged from the hotels parking garage and walked up to the barricades to greet followers and bless silk scarves and prayer beads brought by the crowd.

He paused for a long moment to speak with 93-year-old Jampa Phunkhang of Medford, who in his youth had been a monk in the Dalai Lamas personal entourage, serving his meals and joining him in the flight from Tibet to India in 1959, according to his daughter, Langze Phunkhang.

The Dalai Lama had previously told Jampa Phunkhang that he should write his autobiography. When the men spoke Saturday, the Dalai Lama asked if Phunkhang had written the book. He replied that he had, and then gave the Dalai Lama a copy, his daughter said.

The Dalai Lama will remain in the city until Monday, giving a speech Sunday morning at the Sheraton Boston Hotel that is expected to attract about 2,000 and meeting in the afternoon with members of the nonprofit Mind & Life Institute, an organization that works to bridge science and spirituality.

His stay in Boston concludes a visit to the United States that included a speech at the University of California, San Diego, a stop that was met with opposition on a campus where about 13 percent of students hail from China. The Chinese government has accused the Dalai Lama, who advocates for greater Tibetan autonomy from China, of being a separatist and sowing discord.

In Boston on Saturday, no protesters were visible, and most greeted the Dalai Lama with smiles and open arms.

What he says rings true. Its the universal truth, said Annette Kramer, 55, a Buddhist from Brimfield. And then if you go deeper into his teachings, it guides you on the spiritual path toward ultimate enlightenment.

Yoga is more than just hitting the mat – DailyO

The practice of yoga has swept the world with an enthusiasm never seen before. Yoga has achieved the status of a mass cultural phenomena, evident from the fact that there are around 300 million yoga practitioners in the world and it is an 80-billion-dollar market.

As the fourth fastest growing industry in the USA, it generates 30 billion dollars annually (16 billion from yoga facilities and 10 billion from yoga mats and other yoga props).

To start with, these numbers are indicative of a sudden surge in the business of this ancient philosophical tradition of India. Few of the other ancient arts of world civilisations have survived, sustained and soared to the heights that yoga has.

The credit for this goes to its applicability to every age that the human species has survived. Yoga is one of the rarest of the rare sciences, to have lived through scientific revolutions, technological innovations, and modernisations.

The fact that yoga is recognised and revered in a world progressing towards evidence-based, result-oriented and relational practices makes it a science par excellence.

The prodigious popularity and the overwhelming universal adoption of the Indian discipline demands a special celebratory day to mark the significance of its health benefits (on both mental and physical levels) for common humanity and hence, World Yoga Day has been celebrated annually on June 21, since it was conceived in 2015.

An international day for yoga was announced by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 11, 2014.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested the date because it is the longest day of the Northern Hemisphere. It is the day of summer solstice, which marks the journey of the sun towards the south, a period of six months which is most favourable for spiritual practices, according to certain scriptures. 175 nations, including the USA, Canada, and China co-sponsored the resolution of World Yoga Day.

It had the highest number of co-sponsors ever for any UNGA Resolution of its nature.

More recently, Yoga has been associated with incredible health benefits (like weight loss, blood pressure control, cholesterol lowering, cardiac health, diabetes management, metabolism regulation, promotion of flexibility and endurance, muscle strengthening, sight and height improvements, et al) and that has contributed to the sudden love for the routines and physical postural regiments in every part of the world.

Undoubtedly, yoga does serve the purpose of keeping the body in shape as well as balanced, but there is much more to it than just the physical aspect.

Live beyond the mat

It is important to live beyond the mat! Posture-simulated yoga is just a fraction of the 5000-year-old philosophical wisdom which is buried under the huge popularity of the yoga-sticks of the modern world.

The yoga known to the world today is what has been reinvented in the past 150 years by various yogis and markets, keeping in mind the demands of the time.

It is imperative to know the other aspects of yoga in order to understand how it results in physical fitness.

Not just about the sutras

Sage Patanjali is considered to be the father of the yogic system. Patanjali organised the teachings into 196 short aphorisms or sutras known as the "Yoga Sutra" in the second century.

This text describes the path of Raja Yoga, often called "classical yoga". Yoga arrived in the West in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when yoga masters began to travel to the West for the first time, introducing the yogic wisdom and its relation to spiritual attainments.

A special mention goes to the 1893 Parliament of Religions in Chicago, when Indian Philosopher Swami Vivekananda amazed the attendees with his lectures on yoga and the universality of the world's religions, thereby introducing and popularising the heritage of yogic wisdom to the common people of the West.

In contemporary times, the business of yoga is progressing towards style, convenience, and amusement, rather than the classical purpose of spiritual enlightenment with the help of physical balance and control.

Today, there are some very strange forms and derivations of Yoga practised in various fanciful studios, such as the Co-Ed Completely Nude Vinyasa Yoga (practice yoga in nude), Hot Yoga (studios are heated to 105 degrees Fahrenheit and 40 per cent humidity), dogs (doing yoga while holding your dog in various positions), Yoga (yoga with "vogueing," or dancing/enjoying popular music), Snowga (yoga in the snow), and Laughter Yoga, to name a few.

These techniques are inventions for making yoga fit your preferences of workout style, but they lack the very attitude and spirit of the science which was predominantly devised for spiritual empowerment in its inception.

Spirituality is one of the most fundamental aspects of yoga and this aspect has been overshadowed by the progression of the physical aspect of yoga.

Volumes of texts on yoga sutras provide an insight into millions of questions about human sense and sensibilities, human sufferings and human connectedness to the world.

Yoga philosophy incorporates the senses, the intellect, the ego and the body into one whole reality.

From wisdom about coping with the stress of everyday life to attaining emancipation from worldly desires and attaining the highest form of spiritual self by following various paths recommended by yoga, this humongous science has so much to offer.

According to a popular legend, a renowned sage named Vyasa once sent his son Shuka, a perfect being in every sense, to King Janaka.

Janaka was a great king and was called "Janaka Videha" which means "without a body".

Although a king, he had entirely forgotten that he had a body; he felt that he was a spirit all the time.

When Shuka arrived at the palace, no one noticed him and he was treated like an ordinary insignificant being who received no attention, even being the son of one of the most-renowned sages.

The guards made him sit for three days and nights without speaking with him or serving him.

The next day was a game changer when suddenly, Shuka was bestowed with the best honours and treats, adorned with perfumes and accessories, along with other royal luxuries.

Having lived for a few days in extreme pleasure, Shuka was brought to King Janaka for the first time. The king asked Shuka to hold a full cup of milk and walk seven times around the hall without spilling a drop.

While Shuka walked the hall, he met beautiful women dancing, playful music and beautiful arts, but Shuka remained unaffected and walked impeccably with the milk, not dropping any.

When he brought the milk back to the king, he said: "What your father has taught you, and what you have learned yourself, I can only repeat. You have known the Truth; go home."

This is the spirit of yoga!

Our contemporary times and troubles are overwhelming in a way that taking care of the body but neglecting the spirit does not work in favour of balanced living. When once asked, "What is misery?"

Vivekananda answered: "To every action, there is an equal reaction. If a man strikes me and wounds me, it is that man's actions and my body's reaction. Suppose I have so much power over the body that I can resist even that automatic action."

Can such power be attained? The ancient Indian philosophy says "yes you can".

"However If you stumble on [it], it is a miracle. If you learn it scientifically, it is Yoga."

Yoga philosophy incorporates the senses, the intellect, the ego and the body into one whole reality. It suggests that our misery and our happiness are our own productions.

No situation is either good or bad, but our reaction makes it so.

Everything is in the senses. It is the touch of the senses that creates pleasure or pain. If we can control our senses and order what we shall feel, without letting them control and have command over us, if they become our servants, then the problem is solved.

Our senses make us experience the world and mastery over them is the key to successful living, which can happen with mindfulness attained by yoga.

This leads you to gain the union with your own self. You are not the body, but the universal soul! You learn to control, rather than being controlled, and this is the magic of the science of yoga.

Make you mind your means to salvation by attaining freedom from being affected by the life conditions which are neutral in themselves.

Goal Of Fasting During Holy Ramadan OpEd – Eurasia Review

By Dr. Abdul Ruff

The spiritual well-being of humans is the major thrust of fasting during the Holy month of Ramadan. As Muslims stay away from food, water, etc during the day for whole month, they also keep themselves away from bad thoughts and wrong life patterns as well. They are supposed to be kind to others and never think of hurting their feelings or make them suffer. Muslims cultivate healthy habits and positive thinking and completely overcome narrow mentally. Thus they indeed become true humans, real Muslims as envisaged by Islam and prescribed in the holy Quran.

Once again the Holy Ramadan month has come to purify the minds of Muslims as the chief blessings of Allah (Arabic world for God) to help the humanity of believers live much better than now and after the holy month and safe-land in the Hereafter life. As the Holy month is coming to end Muslims should ponder over the meaning of the Holy month and its spiritual value. This helps us to gauge the change that may have happened in our lives and our very perceptions of life.

Muslims are under intense surveillance and attacks globally while many Muslims deliberately harm fellow Muslims and bring a bad name to Islam by their foolish misbehavior even against Muslims. It is because they have no faith in God or Islam. Whether they fast sincerely or not, they live for themselves, their focus being on scheming and material profits, even work against Islam and Muslim community. These Muslims harm Muslims and others, and they are using Islam and community for their own upliftment; they are a shame to Islam and the Muslim community. But those who observe fasting and offer prayers should be on guard from evils of all kinds. There are precautions that could help Muslims to overcome that and attain spiritual heights the Ramadan fasting is meant for.

Muslims should realize that fasting during the holy Month is not a formality. Attaining self-purification through spirituality is a major goal of Islamic fasting-worship, especially in the month of Holy Ramadan, although unfortunately Muslims fast for certain material benefits.

The entire global nation of over 2 billion people, men and women, young and old, rich or poor all together, for a whole month not eating, not drinking and not having intimate relations, during the daylight hours. This describes the month of Ramadan.

Fasting as a spiritual practice is found not just in Islam but in all religions but there are fundamental differences as Islam prescribes clear cut norms- from dawn to dusk every day for full month of Ramadan. Fasting in Islam does not just consist of refraining from eating and drinking, but from every kind of selfish desire and wrong-doing. The fast is not merely of the body, but essentially that of the mind and spirit as well. The physical fast is only a symbol and outward expression of the real, inner fast.

The founders of various other faiths (Buddha, Moses, Jesus, others) practiced quite rigorous fasting as a preliminary to attaining their first experience of spiritual enlightenment and communion with God. However, it is not that only Holy prophets fast but also all believers also do so, and they all do so not as a mere formality but with a spiritual purpose useful for the human lives. Islamic fasting, especially in Ramadan month, is significant for its content and length from dawn to dusk without food or drink.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar which is a month of blessed, month of revelation of the Holy Quran, and month to achieve Jannah, and therefore the best month in a year Muslims look forward each year to fulfill their spiritual duties. Fasting is one of Islams five main pillars. The other pillars are the belief in one God and the Prophet Mohammed as His Messenger, praying five times a day, completing the pilgrimage to Mecca for those who are able and giving charity or zakat.

Though fasting is mandatory for all Muslims upon reaching puberty, as long as they are mentally and physically sound, it should not be observed as a mere formality. Those elderly and chronically ill are exempt from fasting; however, it is incumbent upon them to feed the poor instead if they possess the financial means. Concern for less privileged and poor is the thrust of Islamic fasting.

While fasting, Muslims are expected to reflect upon good and bad things that have happened to them in the past, especially the last Ramadan month. Those Muslims who have been Islamic, positively religious, upright with truth, who avoid ill speech, arguments, loss of temper and malicious behavior, who have served the cause of Islam and Muslims, helped fellow Muslims and others in difficult positions, who have kept the word given to others are the blessed ones especially those who undertook the fasting and did only good things, thought only of good positive tidings! Remember, Allah warns us of consequences for each of our good or bad actions and we would be held accountable for everything we do or refuse to do.

It is quite possible that Allah does not punish quickly enough those who commit hypocritical errors or crimes but that does not mean we can justify everything we do.

The Holy Quran informs the believers, the Muslims, that fasting, like other Islamic duties, is prescribed for them. O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may guard against evil. (Holy Quran, 2:183) Allah says: And when My servants ask you (O Prophet) about Me, surely I am nigh. I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me, so they should hear My call and believe in Me that they may walk in the right way. (ibid, 2:186) And swallow not up your property among yourselves by false means, nor seek to gain access thereby to the authorities so that you may swallow up other peoples property wrongfully while you know. (ibid., 2:188) He who does not give up uttering falsehood and acting according to it, God has no need of his giving up his food and drink. (Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAS). Prophet Jesus fasted forty days and forty nights, and explained it by saying: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:2-4.) Prophet Moses also had fasted forty days and forty nights (Exodus 34:28).

Purpose of fasting in Islam as practiced by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAS) include (a) develop and strengthen our powers of self-control, so that we can resist wrongful desires and bad habits, and therefore guard against evil. In fasting, exercising our ability of self-restraint, so that we can then apply it to our everyday life to bring about self-improvement; (b) to attain nearness and closeness to Almighty Allah (God) so that He becomes a reality in our lives. The rigors of fasting purely for the sake of following a Divine commandment, knowing and feeling that He can see all our actions however secret, it intensifies the consciousness of God in our hearts, resulting in a higher spiritual experience; (c) to learn to refrain from usurping others rights and belongings. In fasting we voluntarily give up even what is rightfully ours; how can then we think of taking what is not ours but someone else? (d) Charity and generosity is especially urged during Ramadan. We learn to give, and not to take. The deprivation of fasting makes us sympathize with the suffering of others, and desirous of alleviating it; and it makes us remember the blessings of life which we normally take for granted.

The object of fasting is that a person should abstain from the food which nourishes the body and obtain through fasting the other religious food which satisfies and brings solace to the soul. Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad said: People are unaware of the true nature of fasting.. Fasting is not just the state of remaining hungry and thirsty. Its nature and effect can only be discovered by experience. The human makeup is such that the less food is consumed the greater is the purification of the soul and the development of the powers of inner vision. Gods purpose is that you should reduce one kind of food (physical) and increase the other kind (spiritual). The person fasting must remember that the aim is not simply to remain hungry; he should be engrossed in the remembrance of God so as to attain severance from worldly desires.

Fasting a full month with Islamic commitment would make the believers strong spiritually. Those who truly fast for the sake of attaining to God and not merely as a custom or formality- should be absorbed in the praise and glorification of God, and in meditating upon His Unity. Maulana Muhammad Ali said: The real purpose of fasting is to attain righteousness. A person who undergoes hunger and thirst, but does not behave righteously, has done nothing. If someone is told the aim and object of doing a certain duty, and he does that duty but does not attain the required aim and object, it is as if he has not done that duty. The Maulana used very strongly to urge the members of the Muslim community to say the tahajjud prayers during the month of Ramadan: You have to rise early in any case to begin the fast; rise even earlier, by half an hour or an hour, and say tahajjud prayers.

Many people have tried different kinds of fasting. Some will drink only juice for a day, or eat only fruit, or stay away from any sugar or starches, or leave alcohol for a period of time. Yet, it seems strange to most folks, the idea of Muslims fasting in the month of Holy Ramadan. What is the significance of Ramadan? Isnt it a very harsh practice? Is it just a time when Muslims sleep and fast and hardly work all day; and eat, drink, enjoy and stay awake all night? What really is the spirit of Ramadan?

Islamic fasting is not just about staying away from food alone and doing all devilish things 24 hours. There are as many levels of fasting as there are facets to being human. Proper fasting should encompass all dimensions of human existence for it to have the divinely intended effect. The following are some of the major levels of fasting: Ritual level of fasting requires that the basic rules for fasting be fulfilled, which are avoiding food, drink and sexual intercourse between dawn and sunset for 29 or 30 days each year. On this level, one is basically following the letter of the laws regarding fasting without particular consideration for the spirit of fasting. It is the entrance level which must be fulfilled for the fast to be islamically correct, but the other levels must be added for the fast to have any real impact on the fasting person. Fasting on this level alone will not benefit one spiritually, except from the perspective of submission to divine instructions, if one chooses to follow the ritual consciously and not merely according to tradition. Thus, by itself, the ritual level will not purify one of sin or atone for sin.

Fasting on the physical level causes the fasting person to experience the pangs of hunger and thirst when the prophetic (Sunnah) way of fasting is observed. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to consume a very light meal before the dawn (suhur) and moderate meal (iftar) to break the fast at sunset, while scrupulously avoiding filling his stomach. He is reported to have said, The worst container a human being can fill is his stomach. A few morsels of food to keep a persons back straight are sufficient. The Prophet (peace be upon Him) used to break his fast with a few fresh or dried dates and a glass of water just before beginning the sunset prayer. This level allows the fasting person to experience the pangs of hunger and thirst and thereby develops sympathy in him or her for those starving and dying of thirst in other parts of the world.

Islamic fasting cum prayers lead the faithful from the ritual, psychological and physical levels to spiritual level to help live as enlightened Muslims. On the physical level, some chemicals in the brain that transmit messages and create feelings, called neurotransmitters, are affected by fasting. Fasting encourages the endorphin neurotransmitter system, related to the feeling of well being and euphoria, to produce more endorphins and, in fact, makes the true believers feel better. This is similar to the effect of exercise but without the physical work. It has also been noted by medical experts that fasting improves the physical health in numerous ways. For example, during the fast the body uses up stored cholesterol (fat) that is often deposited in the blood system, as well as in other fatty areas of the body. So, we find it does help keep the body firm and minimizes the danger of heart attacks.

The difference between the ritual level and the physical level is, a person doing only ritual fasting may eat large meals prior to beginning the fast and immediately upon ending the fast, and not feel any hunger or thirst throughout the whole month. However, like level one, if the fasting person does not incorporate the other levels of fasting, the fast will only be physically exhausting. The Holy Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him) said, Maybe a fasting person will gain nothing but hunger and thirst from fasting.

The sexual instinct and drives are harnessed on this level of fasting. In these times where the media continually plays on sexual desires to promote and sell products, the ability to control these powerful desires is a plus. Fasting even physically reduces sexual desires and the fact that the fasting person has to avoid anything which could stimulate him psychologically helps to further lower the libido. But committed fasting makes the believers derive all spiritual benefits as well.

Prophet Muhammad (SAS) said, O youths, whoever among you is able to marry let him do so, for it restrains the eyes and protects the private parts. He who is unable to marry should fast, because it is a shield. By restraining from sexual acts, even though they are permissible, the fasting people make it easier for themselves to restrain from forbidden sexual acts when they are not fasting.

Fasting on physical level involves controlling the many negative emotions which simmer in the human mind and soul. For example, among the most destructive emotions is anger. Fasting helps bring these emotions under control. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him) said: When one of you is fasting, he should abstain from indecent acts and unnecessary talk, and if someone begins an obscene conversation or tries to pick an argument, he should simply tell him, I am fasting. So, on this level, whatever negative emotions challenge the fasting person must be avoided. A person has to abstain from lewd conversation and heated arguments. Even when one is in the right, it is better to let that right go and keep ones emotional fast intact. Likewise, the negative emotion of jealousy is reduced, as every fasting person is reduced to the common denominator of abstinence; no one is externally superior to another in this regard.

In true fasting, humans realize several levels of meanings of life. The psychological level helps the fasting person psychologically to control evil thoughts and trains him or her, to some degree, how to overcome stinginess and greed. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, Allah has no need for the hunger and the thirst of the person who does not restrain himself from telling lies and acting on them even while observing the fast. In this age of immediate gratification, when the things of the world are used to fulfill human needs and desires almost as soon as they have them the ability to delay gratification is an important skill. What is between immediate gratification and delayed gratification is patience. During the fast, the believers learn patience and the benefits of it.

Fasting gives one the opportunity to overcome the many addictions which have become a major part of modern life. Food, for many people, provides comfort and joy and the ability to separate oneself from it gives the fasting people the psychological benefit of knowing that they do have some degree of control over what they do and what they do not do. From a psychological perspective, it is good to be somewhat detached from the things of the world. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a good and full life in fact, one can and should expect that. However, it is important that Muslims are able to detach ourselves from material things so that they do not become the most important part of their lives to determine our faith.

In Islam, in order to establish the final spiritual level the highest and most important level of fasting, the level of Allah-consciousness, Prophet Muhammad SAS (peace be upon Him) made the renewal of the intention for fasting a requirement before every day of fasting. He was reported to have said, Whoever does not intend to fast before Fajr (the dawn) will have no fast. The daily renewal of intention helps to establish a spiritual foundation of sincerity essential for the spiritual cleansing effects of fasting to operate. Sincere fasting purifies and atones for sin, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, Whoever fasts Ramadan out of sincere faith and seeking his reward from God, his previous sins will be forgiven. He was also reported to have said, From one Ramadan to the next is atonement for the sins between them.

Fasting, like other Islamic requirements like daily prayers and holy Hajj is not a mere formality to be completed somehow as a burden but it has a spiritual significance attached to it and hence it needs to be performed with utmost sincerity and complete commitment.

Islamic fasting is not simply about denying our body food and water. It also involves arguably the more taxing challenge of avoiding ill speech, arguments, loss of temper and malicious behavior. When combined with the previous levels of fasting, the spiritual level transforms a person from within. It restores, revives and regenerates the fasting persons spirituality and radically modifies his or her personality and character. These are the precious products of a heightened state of God-consciousness. A successful fasting enables us become pure in thoughts and deeds.

Fasting is primarily between the person and God, as no one can be sure that any person is actually fasting. Because of this intimate aspect of fasting, Allah was quoted by the Prophet (peace be upon him) as saying. Every act of Adams descendants is for themselves, except fasting. It is meant for Me alone, and I alone will give the reward for it.

Self-purification as the central part of spiritual development is the goal of fasting during Holy Ramadan. It is obviously wrong to presume that just fasting without any spiritual commitment in the Holy month of piety and compassion would add more wealth to us. Fasting is performed as a duty of Muslims for Allahs kindness toward us.

Self-purification could be attained only by performing the fasting cum prayers at all its levels. If Muslims fast with ill-feelings intact and just for dirty money or similar other favors, they do not seek self-purification, On the contrary, by such selfish or negative motives in fasting they refuse to be self purified in spiritual form. These Muslims care nothing about the Hereafter life.

Truth and truthfulness, kindness and compassion are the foundations of self purification. Whether they fast or not, if Muslims do not tell lies or at least avoid telling lies they could be sure of reaching the truth zone. But if they decide to continue to avoid lies, they indirectly approach the spiritual domain. However, if upon the close of holy fasting, Muslims resume all bad habits, including telling lies, they in fact directly kick the holy fasting month.

If humans- Muslims have not changed their life patterns, even after fasting 30 days year after year it could only signify hopelessly permanent hollowness in humans! That also may mean Muslims systemically refuse to accept the importance of arrival of Holy Prophets to the world to guide the humanity.

Importantly, Muslims could perform fasting, prayers and other religious duties not merely as a formality for favors from God or people. Spirituality and self-purification have got much to do with this notion. If Muslims have fooled, deceived or harmed anyone, deliberately or otherwise, they need to repent.

Sincere fasting brings one closer to Allah and earns a special reward. The Prophet (peace be upon him) informed that there is a gate in paradise called Rayyan reserved for those who fast and he also said, When Ramadan comes, the gates of Paradise are open.

Patience and mercy are the important virtues we all need in these harried times to live as good humans. Month of Ramadan is viewed as a month-long school where graduates leave with a developed sense of self-control in areas including diet, sleeping and the use of time. The degree to be obtained by the believers could be called as Self-purification.

For this to happen, let bad, cunning or negative thoughts leave your mind and good thoughts enter your mind system in order to help you make a better and purposeful spiritual life. Holy month of Ramadan is the best time for that auspicious endeavor.

Simply put, in saying that we have observed Ramadan fasting, we should also mean we are now purified with divine thoughts, away from selfish, hypocritical, corrupt malicious motives of ordinary life.

As Ramadan fasting is sort of preparation for the enlightened life as well as life Hereafter, Muslims need to ensure that they would be qualitatively different purified in body, mind, heart, thoughts, soul at least partially to begin with- when Holy Ramadan month arrives next year.

Let us make Holy Ramadan purposeful. Let us continue throughout year with whatever good tidings we practice during the Holy Ramadan. Let us be away from mischief and sins.

May Allah protect all Muslims from devilish eyes, from sinful destructive designs of enemies of Islam! May God save the globe and humanity from getting destroyed by the threatening nuclear or conventional or just terror wars by big powers to showcase their newly developed high precision weapon systems for prospective regional arms merchants.

May God grant true faith, peace, happiness and prosperity for entire humanity!

You don’t know the prostate gland until you read this masterpiece – GhanaWeb

Health News of Thursday, 22 June 2017

Prostate problem can also leave a man to be infertile

Its Prostate not Prostrate. Prostate means to stand infront while Prostrate means to lie face Down. I bring you the amazing functions of the Prostate gland. Knowing this is a sure way to keep it healthy!

1. It is a Gland!

So you heard that it is called the prostate gland but what exactly the gland do? The most important job of the prostate is to manufacture and secrete some of the alkaline seminal fluids during ejaculation (about 30-35% of the semen ejaculate). Being alkaline, the prostate fluid, which is milky whitish in color, helps the sperm survive in the acidic vaginal environment. So our prostate is therefore considered to be a gland because glands produce something.

2. The Professor of blending

I called the prostate gland the professor in charge of mixing but not professor know everything. You are wondering why? Because, the prostate mixes its fluids with those from the seminal vesicles to convey the sperm made in the testicles. Collectively these fluids rush through the prostate into the urethra during ejaculation. The urethra doubles as the semen pipe during ejaculation and as the urine pipe from the bladder, both fluids move from the angle of the penis.

The prostatic urethra is the path that runs through the prostate gland and is about 3cm (1) in distance. And you have heard about the controversial, Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a fluid produced in the prostate, it plays a key role in helping the sperm to swim into the uterus by helping to maintain the semen in liquid form. It opposes and mitigates the clotting enzyme in the seminal vesicle fluid, which in effect binds the semen to the womans cervix, next to the uterus opening inside the vagina. PSA dissolves this glue with its own enzyme so that the sperm can hasten into the uterus and help impregnate an egg if it is available.

This is the same PSA that is tested during the PSA blood test, a very controversial test because of the many factors that can cause the results to vary extensively.

3. Muscle

For simplicity and better understanding a muscle is a body tissue consisting of long cells that contract when stimulated and produce motion or an organ that is essentially a mass of muscle tissue attached at either end to a fixed point and that by contracting moves or checks the movement of a body part. It has a physical strength, power and influence on a man.

So the prostate is also a muscle that pushes the semen out through the penis with adequate power to enter into the vagina to help the sperm do well in getting into the cervix and to help reproduction.

4. OH Man!

You are wondering why I am screaming. Probably you must know this because, the up and down movements of the prostate in no doubt feels good, making sex pleasing and therefore helping reproduction and remember that is why prostate problem can also leave a man to be infertile

5. Women, where are you? It is your Man G-Spot

Men also have a G-Spot so dont think that only women have G-Spot. Men prostate is their G-Spot. Do you how it is done? Simple, Prostate stimulation can create an extraordinarily well-built sexual response and strong orgasm in men that are open to this sexual method. So your ability to manage ejaculation at the prostate can also guide you to delayed orgasms and injaculations where no semen is move out-so men suffering from premature ejaculation you happy now. But this method is done in superior Taoist and Tantric sexual practices to contain the sexual energy within.

Sexuality plays an important part in our health and well being, but it is often not addressed in our rushed, modern world. Our puritan background and overachieving work ethic may have something to do with our reticence to delve there. Many people have taboos and wounding that can be triggered when they start looking into their sexuality. The ancient practices of Taoism and Tantra with their rich viewpoint can offer us a reawakening of a healthy sexuality.

Both Tantric and Taoist principles consider sexual energy the same as life force, and both practices use the energy centers of the body to increase life force as a means to increased spirituality and improved health and longevity. Both Tantra and Taoism have practices for conserving and building sexual energy. Joining of sexual energies by two partners is purported to bring the highest pleasure and spiritual enlightenment.

Medically, when two people make an intimate connection through sex, stress hormones decrease and serotonin increases. This provides a potent internal milieu for optimal health.

In researching Taoism, there is mostly information available on practices for males to use to energetically conserve their jing (life force) by learning to redirect the energy of orgasm throughout the body without ejaculating. The ancient texts gave much more instruction to men, and considered women to be merely a vessel or cauldron. While the place of women has changed over the years, less information is available for women to learn to redirect sexual energy. The Taoist practices are best learned with a teacher.

Tantric practices seem somewhat more approachable to the Westerner. Some simple steps for beginners are to create a sacred space, take it slowly, look into one anothers eyes, and work with the breath. Breath is the most important element in Tantra. Using your breath, you can spread orgasmic energy from your genitals through your entire body. With your partner, you can synchronize the breath, one inhaling while the other is exhaling. There are more elaborate practices for moving the sexual life force energies through the body, some that are safest to practice with a teacher.

If you are ready to open up more energy and health by harnessing sexual energy, you may find Tantra or Taoism a helpful pursuit

6. Sieving

The prostate also acts as sieve and removes toxins or waste for defense of the sperm, which helps men chances of impregnation and also made sure that men start with the most favorable class of sperm. I consider this as the prostates most significant function and, at the same time, can be one of the main reasons there is a rising problem of prostate disease and cancer as men in Ghana and the black communities as we deal with more and more toxins or wastes in our food, water and the surroundings.

7. Manhood for Life! Dont sleep on duty!

The prostate gland gives men their erections because the prostate erection nerves are in charge for erections. These nerves activate the penis to enlarge and solidify with added blood flowing into it, and this helps men in producing an erection.

So obviously, if these nerves, which attach to the sides of the prostate, get damaged then erectile difficulties are certain and they now call your inability to have sex with your woman due to prostate problem is called sleeping on duty!. That is why many medical prostate procedures (surgery or radiation) have an unwanted side effect of erectile difficulties or impotence and also when men have a problem with their prostate been it enlarged prostate et al the men have problem with their sex life, so if you are suffering from sexual difficulties please kindly check your prostate.

8. Secretions

Secretion is the process of elaborating, releasing, and oozing chemicals , or a secreted chemical substance from a cell or gland . In contrast to excretion , the substance may have a certain function, rather than being a waste product.

Prostatic secretions also play an expensive function by defending the urethra from urinary tract infections, which appear to be a great deal rarer in men than women.

9. Valves

The prostate, surrounds the upper part of the urethra tube just below the bladder (the prostatic urethra), its controls the flow of urine. It does this by preventing urine from exit the bladder, apart from when unrestricted by urination. It also prevents urine from destructive ejaculate during orgasm. It does this in a very critical way by using the two small prostatic muscles called sphincters. They act as gatekeepers with shut-off valves to control and regulate the dual-purpose urethra tube. These gatekeepers make sure the right fluids flow at the right time urination or ejaculation. Great one by God and not a demon at all!

One of the sphincters is situated where the bladder and the upper part of the prostate convene (the interior upper sphincter). In a healthy state, it prevents urination until the man feels the need to go and pee and stops seminal fluid from moving backwards into the bladder during ejaculation. When injured, semen is pushed back into the bladder and finally exits with normal urination. This is known as retrograde ejaculation because the normal one is called ante grade ejaculation and is an added possible side effect of prostate surgery no chance of seeding a woman then, Ronald M Bazar said this!

The second, external lower sphincter is at the bottom of the prostate and is subject to our control. It prevents dribbling after urinating and is how as men voluntarily can delay urination when ill-timed to go. Incontinence finally occurs when control of either sphincter is damaged and urine leaks or flows uncontrollably, this force many men with prostate problems to wear adult diapers.

But men can voluntarily control the lower sphincter and to stop urine or semen from moving if men have enough Kegel muscle control, the ability to squeeze the flow shut. Any one of these sphincter muscles will block the urine until the push for to peeing takes control and the timing is right to release and let the urine flow.

An enlarged prostate or BPH can squeeze the prostatic urethra tube and the upper or lower sphincter, making urination difficult with a host of unpleasant, uncontrollable symptoms. BPH surgeries that remove part of the prostate can easily have side effects of incontinence or retrograde ejaculation.

10. Father or God of male Hormones

I call the prostate gland the father of men hormones. Because, it contain a vital enzyme, 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme converts the hormone testosterone in the body to DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which is at least ten to thirty times more powerful than simple testosterone. This potent hormone DHT has numerous function including male sexual drive and function. As men age and at a point in time, a build-up of toxins in the prostate may affect the production of this enzyme, which is then accountable for the declining sex drive in men as they age.

DHT and testosterone have erroneously been under attack as responsible hormones in prostate problems rather than the extreme rise in modern male estrogen levels, leading to medical interventions with serious side effects including lack of libido. Estrogen levels rise because of the predominance of estrogens in factory foods, commercial meats and dairy and estrogen-mimicking chemicals present in body-care and household products. Its even found in our water and some plastic food packaging.

The prostate gland is a very complex gland with numerous functions; if you dont take good care of it then certain prostate disease can cause havoc on your health. So I entreat you as men to do everything possible now that you know the functions of the prostate gland to be smart and pay close attention to your prostate gland likewise our women because they play a critical role in ensuring the health of our prostate gland. You see a detrimental prostate can have a huge impact on our sexual function and our daily urination. So you can describe it any way you want it but if you dont take good care of it then you are in doom and your inability to enjoyed good has now been term sleeping on duty!

How a Quarter-Life-Crisis Trip to Bali Reminded Me of the Power of Ramadan – Allure Magazine

Every year, Muslims around the world observe the holy month of Ramadan, a month-long physical and spiritual cleanse characterized by daily fasting from dawn until dusk.

Raised in a conservative Muslim family, I, too, observed Ramadan year after year growing up. I often described the practice to my non-Muslim friends as "just something I do for my religion. I assumed it would be difficult to for them to fathom why anyone would willingly refrain from food and drink.

When Ramadan began this year, I was in Bali on a month-long retreat dedicated to self-discovery, part of a sabbatical from my demanding job in tech (see: quarter-life crisis). Away from family, friends, and work, I used this time to look for a stillness and balance I felt I had lost in the grind of recent years. Like other visitors to the island, I dabbled in yoga and meditation, sampled raw food, tried sound healings, considered getting a colonic, and backed out of getting a colonic. My pledge was to experiment without judging.

In my time in Ubud, the spiritual epicenter of Bali, I met fanatic yogis, celibacy advocates, intermittent fasters, colonic enthusiasts, and silent retreaters. As well as Muslim, I'm a wide-eyed girl from Jersey with a thing for Eat, Pray, Love and plenty of curiosity. I asked these enlightenment seekers why they did what they did.

"I eat one meal a day a couple days a week. It keeps my blood sugar levels in check," an intermittent faster shared.

"I'm refraining from sex for a year. I'm engaging in physical starvation of external gratification to boost my self-worth," an abstainer told me.

"I do a colonic once every two months. It rids my colon of toxins and triggers a full-body detox ," a colonic enthusiast explained.

"I'm sorting through my inner dialogue to find peace," a silent retreater wrote.

Sign me up , I thought, I need all of it . And so I spent the first 27 days of the retreat trying out other peoples practices, until the 28th day, when Ramadan started, and like clockwork, I sprung into my yearly routine: no food, no drink, less talk, more reflection. Suddenly, this East Coast girl in Bali was piquing interest.

"Why do you observe Ramadan?"

"It's a spiritual cleanse, a detoxification of all senses, a starvation of bad habits, a time to reset, a time to self-reflect," I found myself answering. In the heart of this little island where people from around the world migrate in their self-improvement journeys, I had the floor.

This time, rather than call Ramadan just something I do for my religion, I explained. Ramadan begins in the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is marked by the visual sighting of the last full moon of the year. It is a month to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran, Islam's central religious text, to the Prophet Muhammad. From dawn until dusk every day this month, Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, smoking, having sex, and generally gratifying physical desires.

The word Ramadan is derived from the Arabic word ramada , which means "to get hot" or "to burn. It is believed that Ramadan is an opportunity to burn sins with good deeds. Ramadan is not just a display of piety, though. Its a cleanse of mind, body, and soul. In addition to refraining from food, drink, smoking, and sex, Muslims also refrain from emotionally and spiritually toxic habits such as lying, cheating, gossiping, and displaying anger. We pause. We reflect on our behavior and our values. Ramadan is considered the ultimate exercise in self-discipline.

I knew all of this. But it took a new setting to rediscover it. During an early morning practice one day during Ramadan, my yoga instructor exclaimed that "Islam is one of the most Yogic religions in the world," and to my surprise, his words made a lot of sense to me. In physical practice, Islamic prayer, or salah , consists of four main movements prevalent in many yogic practices. For example, sujud , a position that brings knees, palms, and forehead to the ground, is a whole lot like balasana , the restful yogic position commonly known as child's pose (my personal favorite yoga pose). From that day, I started using my time in yoga as an extension of my own spiritual efforts. I'd swap out traditional Sanskrit mantras, which often commemorate Hindu gods, for the similar recitation of dhikr , short phrases or prayers expressed in devotion to my god. Cultural and religious practices were merging to bring me closer to humility, devotion, and remembrance of purpose.

As usual during Ramadan, I also increased my time in salah, reciting verses from the Quran with insistent focus. At this point, I had spent weeks reading books about mindfulness and meditating daily, growing frustrated with myself when my racing mind continued to wander. While praying one particularly noisy day, I noticed something: I would recite one verse, and a rooster would crow; I'd recite another, and the sound of drums would vibrate in my room but during prayer, I acknowledged the sounds, gently brought my attention back to center, and continued. Afterward, I couldn't help but laugh to myself. Over the retreat, I had started losing hope that I would ever be able to control my unruly mind, and yet here I was in daily (successful!) practice of mindfulness through prayer. It was the first time I had ever connected my quest for mindfulness with the prayer practice I already had.

And walking through the streets of Ubud one sweltering afternoon during Ramadan, I felt not only hungry and thirsty but keenly aware of how lucky I am. In the U.S., when its hot, I can retreat to air conditioning. When Im not fasting, I can eat until I'm satiated, which is not the case for many in both Bali and the U.S. When night comes, I can sleep in a bed secure in the knowledge that Ill be safe until morning. Observing Ramadan outside of my comfortable U.S. routine, I was reminded more than ever to be grateful for my blessings, and to remember and help those who have less than I. Feeling hunger and thirst can inspire empathy for those who suffer without food and clean drinking water year round, and Islam teaches that this empathy should translate into good deeds: At the end of Ramadan, Muslims give charity, or zakat , a compulsory donation to those in need.

Im observing the final days of Ramadan stateside, at home in Jersey. I see now that for over two decades, I viewed the holiday as if it were in a holy silo, separate from my other attempts to better myself. But as I observed the parallels between Ramadan and other traditions and looked at old practices in a new light, I returned to what this month can and should be. Its an opportunity to reflect on our values; a chance to shed toxic habits; a reminder to be grateful for what we have. Ironically, what I flew 10,000 miles to find is what Ramadan had already taught me.

I went to Bali convinced that to improve myself, I needed to abandon my old practices and replace them with more enlightened ones. Instead, I was reminded of the power of practices I already had. In seeking the new (and new-age), I rediscovered the familiar. It was exactly what Id been looking for.

Lord Carey steps back from ministry after ‘harrowing’ report on Peter Ball case – Church Times

BOTH the Archbishop of Canterburys predecessors have issued personal apologies, and the Archbishop has asked Lord Carey to consider his position as an honorary assistant bishop in the diocese of Oxford, after the publication of an independent report on the Peter Ball case and the Churchs part in it.

Lord Carey has been strongly criticised in the report of the review group, chaired by Dame Moira Gibb, which was published on Thursday, almost two years after the review was announced by Archbishop Welby (News, 7 October 2015).

The 81-page report, Abuse of Faith, sets out in detail the events and circumstances leading up to, surrounding, and following the arrest and imprisonment of Ball, who received a three-year sentence in October 2015, having admitted to a series of indecent assaults and the abuse of 18 young men aged 17-25. One of his victims took his own life. Ball, who is 85, was released in February after serving 16 months of his sentence.

The report criticises the conduct of several senior Church of England figures in particular, Lord Carey, who, it says, failed to respond to repeated expressions of concern and allegations against Bishop Ball most notably those of the late Neil Todd, who was repeatedly abused by the bishop during the 1980s and 90s.

In a statement on the report, which he described as harrowing, Archbishop Welby said that the Church had colluded and concealed rather than acted to help survivors to come forward; and he repeated an unreserved apology for this.

This is inexcusable and shocking behaviour, and, although Dame Moira notes that most of the events took place many years ago, and does not think that the Church now would conduct itself in the ways described, we can never be complacent: we must learn lessons.

A copy of a letter to Lord Carey, requesting that he carefully consider relinquishing his title as honorary assistant bishop, was leaked online on Thursday morning. The existence of the correspondence was later confirmed in a statement from the Bishop of Oxford, Dr Steven Croft, who said that he had agreed to meet Lord Carey in the coming days. In the mean time, he has voluntarily agreed to step back from public ministry.

Receiving the report on behalf of Archbishop Welby, on Thursday, however, the Bishop of Bath & Wells, the Rt Revd Peter Hancock, who is the lead bishop on safeguarding, said that news of the leaked letter was very disappointing, since the focus should have been on the survivors.

Having read the report, I am appalled and deeply disturbed by its contents. . . Today is a reminder of how we have failed, and this report provides robust recommendations for how we can improve our safeguarding practice.

Ball had continued to abuse young boys and men sexually and physically for his own gratification, under the pretence of providing spiritual enlightenment, for the duration of his ministry as monk, priest, and, later, bishop, the report says. He had been involved in founding and running monastic religious communities since 1960, when concerns were first raised about his behaviour including reports of praying naked on the chapel floor, self-flagellation, and the physical and sexual harassment and abuse of others, including schoolboys.

The Churchs trivialisation of such allegations, together with its nave, prescriptive, and prejudiced attitude towards homosexuality, were in part to blame for its repeated failure to acknowledge and conduct a proper investigation into the exploitation carried out by Ball throughout his ministry, the report says.

It describes how, in October 1992, Mr Todd, after attempting to take his own life, disclosed the abuse to a Mr A, who passed on the allegations to the Bishop of Chichester at the time, the late Dr Eric Kemp, who subsequently briefed Lord Carey. It was not until Mr Todd attempted to take his life for a second time, however, that his worried parents contacted Gloucester Police. This eventually led to a Metropolitan Police investigation into the allegations.

Lambeth Palace later issued a press statement acknowledging the investigations. It stated that Lord Carey had instructed Bishop Ball to rest from his official duties, and was praying for him. There was no mention of survivors, and it said: It must be emphasized that no charges have been brought against the Bishop, and the allegations about him are unsubstantiated. Moreover, the Bishop has a proven record of outstanding pastoral work, particularly amongst young people.

In 1993, Ball stood down as Bishop of Gloucester after his arrest and caution for gross indecency. In the December, Lambeth Palace received seven letters containing potentially disturbing information about Ball, but did not release them during the police investigation. Lord Carey chose not to place Ball on the Lambeth list naming clerics of questionable suitability, and during a CRB check of Ball in 2004, no evidence of the police caution had been recorded.

JOHN SMYTH, the Evangelical Christian camp leader accused of savagely beating young men during the 1970s and 80s in his garden shed, has been formally expelled from his church in South Africa, where he now lives

Only one of those letters was handed over, Dame Moira said on Thursday. It is perfectly possible that the course of events would have been altered had those letters been handed over. It was deeply inappropriate that the Church did not hand them over at that time.

Bishop Hancock said: It was disgraceful that the Church consistently and completely failed those survivors at that time.

Mr Todd took his own life in 2012, after the allegations against Ball resurfaced. This led to an investigation by Sussex Police, Operation Dunhill. Lord Carey had played down previous concerns, allowed Ball to continue his ministry, and even provided funds to assist Ball during this time, the report says.

Both Lord Carey and Lord Williams, who was Archbishop when the police investigation into Ball was conducted in 2012, have apologised.

Lord Carey states: I accept the criticisms made of me. I apologise to the victims of Peter Ball. I believed Peter Balls protestations and gave too little credence to the vulnerable young men and boys behind those allegations. I regret that after Peter Ball was cautioned I did not place his name on the Lambeth list.

While Lord Williams had inherited a confused situation from his predecessor, and started the process that led to Balls arrest and imprisonment, he had been too slow, and missed the opportunity to review and clarify the case, the report says.

Lord Williams acknowledged this in his apology. It is clear that I did not give adequate priority to sorting out the concerns and allegations surrounding Peter Ball at the earliest opportunity. I recognise that such a delay is likely to have increased the pressure and distress experienced by the survivors of his abuse and I am sincerely sorry for this.

The report also criticises other senior church figures, including Balls predecessor as Bishop of Gloucester, the Rt Revd John Yates, as well as Peter Balls idenitical twin brother, the Rt Revd Michael Ball, who conducted a manipulative campaign to allow his brother to continue his ministry.

Concerning one aspect of the twins relationship, it concludes: It appears to us extraordinary that a bishop should, at best, be so careless as to allow himself to be impersonated, and particularly to be impersonated by a former bishop who had resigned in the circumstances detailed above. However, the Church has considered these matters and has taken no further action. That may be appropriate in the light of Bishop Michael Balls age, and status as a retired bishop.

The report dismisses allegations that any member of the royal family intervened on Peter Balls behalf. Ball himself, both in his correspondence and in his public statements, sought to exploit his contact with members of the Royal Family in order to bolster his position, particularly in the eyes of Lord Carey and others from whom he hoped to receive sympathetic treatment.

We have reviewed all the relevant material including the correspondence passing between the Prince of Wales and Ball held by the Church and found no evidence that the Prince of Wales or any other member of the Royal Family sought to intervene at any point in order to protect or promote Ball.

The report also notes of Peter Ball: His decision to withhold his co-operation with this review does not sit well with [his] declarations [of remorse].

Presenting the report, Dame Moira said: Peter Ball abused his faith and his Church, appearing outwardly as a good and holy man while actively harming others. He abused the faith that people rightly had in him as a leader in the Church, and most importantly he abused the faith of those who sought spiritual guidance from him, and instead found hurt, deceit, and manipulation.

These shocking acts were compounded by the failure of the Church to respond appropriately to numerous concerns raised by survivors and others, including those who had known and worked with Ball, she said.

Her report sets out 11 recommendations for the Church, both to support the complex needs of survivors properly, and to prevent further abuse. This includes reviewing its safeguarding procedures, as well as the responsibilities of the National Safeguarding Team and the Lambeth, Bishopthorpe, and Archbishops lists.

Bishop Hancock said that a copy of the report had been sent to all the Bishops, and that survivors would be invited to tell of their experiences, including the family of Mr Todd. He also referred to new safeguarding legislation and updated guidance from the House of Bishops.

For the survivors, it may feel this is all too late. I am personally aware from my meetings with individual survivors in the course of my work that they live with the effects of this abuse for their whole life. I once again offer them my wholehearted apology.

My Favorite Spiritual Movies – Splice Today

A Top 10 list.

Ive always loved spiritual films. To me, movie theaters are like nouveau cathedrals. A bunch of strangers sit in a darkened theater staring at a screen while a morality tale plays itself out in front of them. Cinematic scripture is comprised of slick images, sharp dialogue, and awe-inspiring music. Modern-day evangelists are film directors, screenwriters, and actors. When applied to spiritual stories, movies can teach and inspire. Heres my Top 10 list of spiritual movies.

10) The MissionThe opening scene depicts a Jesuit priest tied to a cross and thrown over a waterfall to his death. The priest has been martyred for disobeying a Roman Catholic missive to close a mission in the jungles of South America and give the land to Portuguese slave traders. Robert DeNiro is a former slave trader who yearns for atonement. He helps priest Jeremy Irons save the mission and keep the local natives free from slavery. The film is about following ones conscience in a world besieged with violence, greed and the pursuit of power. Through the miracle of Gods grace, even the worst among us can be transformed.

9) The Truman ShowJim Carrey plays Truman, a man born and raised on a movie set. His wife, boss, best friend, and even his neighbors are all part of a hit TV show broadcast to the world. Truman doesnt know this. He goes along living his bland existence unaware his life is a stage. Before long Truman experiences an awakening, a need to discover the truth of his existence. His peers urge him to maintain the status quo, but Truman listens to his inner voice. He leaves the firm footing of land (the movie set) and escapes across a stormy ocean. This is his spiritual journey. By storys end he realizes theres more to life then a pre-scripted day-to-day existence. The final scene shows Truman exiting a door to a new world.

8) Jacobs LadderWritten by the master of spiritual screenwriting, Bruce Joel Rubin, the film tells of Jacob Singer, a Vietnam veteran trapped in a literal hell on earth. Everywhere he sees demons and symbols of hell and cant discern if hes lucid or hallucinating. Biblical references are everywhere. Jacobs girlfriend is Jezebel, like the Biblical wife of King Ahab who influenced her husband to abandon the worship of God. Jacob is named after the biblical patriarch who dreams of a stairway between heaven and earth. The storys message is found in a quote by Meister Eckhart paraphrased at the end of the film. The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that wont let go of your life, your memories, your attachments. Theyre not punishing you. Theyre freeing your soul. If youre frightened of dying and youre holding on, youll see devils tearing your life away. But if youve made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth.

7) Cool Hand LukePaul Newman is Luke, a man sentenced to a chain gang for a petty crime. The prison guards try to beat him down, but Lukes spirit is indomitable. Luke is a Christ figure, taking on beatings to absolve his fellow prisoners of their punishment. He picks up a rattlesnake without being bit as if suggesting Satan has no power over him. His prison number is 37, a reference to the Book of Luke 1:37: For with God nothing shall be impossible. Like Christ, Lukes purpose is to show his fellow prisoners how to achieve freedom from tyranny and oppression. Lukes sacrifice is inevitable. The evil prison guard Godfrey (free of God) ultimately guns him down. But Godfreys ever-present sunglasses are crushed, implying that Lukes death has freed his fellow prisoners once and for all.

6) The MatrixThis sci-fi epic is all about humans living in a dream world of illusion. But theres a higher existence, a transcendent reality beyond that which we can touch and see. Neo is a Christ figure, the one who will bring freedom to us all. Hes a seeker on a personal path toward enlightenment. He comes to realize that the pain of the world is brought on by ignorance, craving and greed. Only through the Buddhist concept of non-attachment can one achieve freedom. The film is packed with religious and mythological symbolism. The character Trinity represents the Christian concept of completion. Morpheus is the teacher, the god of dreams. Cypher is the betrayer, the Judas whose mathematical symbol is zero. The film spurs us to question what is real and illusion in our own lives. As the Taoist philosopher Chuang Tzu wrote in the fourth century, While we dream we do not know we dream. Fools think we are awake now. Only when we awake do we know it is a dream.

5) Its A Wonderful LifeThis 1946 classic is the most enduring spiritual movie of all time. Jimmy Stewart plays George Bailey, an ordinary man stuck in a go-nowhere job, trapped by small-town existence. His unfulfilled dreams overwhelm him to the point he considers suicide. With the help of Clarence, a celestial angel, he learns gratitude, to appreciate his normal life as magnificent. Everything we do or say has a positive or negative impact on others. Our life is a gift to be cherished and appreciated. As Clarence says near the end of the film, Each mans life touches so many other lives. And when he isnt around he leaves an awful hole, doesnt he?

4) Groundhog DayThis Harold Ramis comedy is a favorite among religious leaders of all faiths. Through a twist of fate, Bill Murray is forced to relive the same day over and over again. The movie taps into the Buddhist idea of samsara, the cycle of rebirth and suffering humans try to overcome. Murray is a bodhisattva, a person on the brink of nirvana. He must learn the spiritual lessons required to end the cycle of pain and save his soul. The film also resonates with Jewish teaching since Murray must perform mitzvahs (good deeds) to find happiness.

3) The ExorcistThis classic horror film is a spiritual primer in good vs. evil. When first released in 1973, the film was considered evil and satanic by evangelist Billy Graham. But screenwriter William Peter Blatty wrote the story as an honest exploration of spirituality in the modern age. Does evil exist? Why do bad things happen to innocent people? The film embraces the Christian concept that God laid down his own life to save humanity. When asking why our world is so dysfunctional and dark, were tempted to reach for human answers (poverty, lack of education, mental illness). But perhaps a return to the fundamental principles of our faith is required. The film is terrifying but in the end good triumphs over evil and the audience is forced to explore their own beliefs about spirituality and God.

2) GhostThis 1989 film written by Bruce Joel Rubin perfectly lays out the rules of Judeo-Christian ideology. The body is a vessel for the soul. If a man dies before hes ready, his soul wanders the afterlife in a state of confusion. This lost soul is what we call a ghost. Like a river cut off from the ocean, our soul needs guidance to return from where we all came. Our individual lives are where we learn important spiritual lessons. Some people have the ability to communicate with lost souls. These people become spiritual guides and teach key lessons. Those who follow the path of good connect to the light. Those who stray and embrace evil are absorbed by darkness. Only through love and compassion can we learn the great truth of existence. We are all Spirit.

1) Star WarsMay the Force be with you. There is no greater spiritual proclamation in the history of cinema. Though ostensibly a sci-fi action flick, the Stars Wars trilogy is embedded with spiritual wisdom. From the samurai-like teachings of Obi-Wan Kenobi to the Zen wisdom of Yoda, spiritual dogma is embedded in Star Wars. While writing the original screenplay, George Lucas consulted with Joseph Campbell, the renowned teacher of myth and spiritual folklore. Campbells Hero With A Thousand Faces has become a source manual for screenwriters attempting to craft a spiritual tale. The Force (i.e., God, Tao, Dharma) is inside us and around us at all times. All we need to do is tap into this energy and universal equanimity will be restored.

On the Record: Where is the Marrakesh Express? – Sanford Herald (registration)

Q: I heard Marrakesh Express by Crosby, Stills and Nash on the radio recently. Is there really such a railroad and, if so, where is it?

A: There most certainly is a Marrakesh Express! It runs between the Moroccan cities of Casablanca and Marrakesh. The two cities lie roughly 155 miles apart in a north-south orientation, with Casablanca sitting on the Atlantic coast about 50 miles southwest of the Kingdoms capital, Rabat. Marrakesh Express was written by Graham Nash in August 1967 while he was still with the Hollies. During the mid-60s, Morocco had a reputation among the hippies as being a wildly exotic place full of interesting sights and experiences, including finding spiritual enlightenment. Nash decided to visit and boarded the Marrakesh Express in Casablanca.

He first started out in the first-class section, but he quickly found that boring and wandered back to where the third-class passengers rode.

There he found people sharing meals that were cooked on little wood-burning stoves. He found live farm animals, too. The whole experience resonated him, but it wasnt until the following year that he tried to write the song. The song did not fit well with the rest of his Hollies bandmates. So he put it aside until he teamed up with David Crosby and Stephen Stills in late 1968. He dusted it off and they recorded it for their debut album, Crosby, Stills & Nash. The song was also the first single from that album and peaked at No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 record chart. It also was the only Top 20 hit CS&N had in the UK. On a side note, history buffs might be interested to know that Morocco has the distinction of being the first country to recognize the new United States as a country in 1777. This recognition was formalized in 1786 when the Moroccan-United States Treaty of Peace and Friendship was signed by diplomats Thomas Barclay, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson and Moroccan sultan, Muhammad III. Congress formally ratified it on July 18, 1787. It is still in effect today, making it the longest, unbroken treaty in our nations history.

Q: Ive heard many different stories about the identity of Angie in the famous Rolling Stones song. Has she ever been positively identified?

A: Over the years, there have been many persistent rumors about the identity of Angie. Angela Bowie, David Bowies wife at the time and the alleged lover of Mick Jagger, is the most common person identified as Angie. Another common rumor identifies Angie as Anita Pallenberg, Keith Richards girlfriend at the time. However, the title actually refers to Keith and Anitas daughter, Dandelion Angela Richards, who was born in April 1972 and was a baby when Angie was recorded in late 1972. In 1993, Richards stated that he came up with the songs melody and title.

Explaining that Angela had recently been born, he said the title refers to her. Angelas early life was not normal. Both of her parents famously struggled with heroin addiction. In fact, she was given to Keiths mother, Doris, to raise. It really was not until she was in her 30s that she was able to reconcile with both of her parents.

Whats the name of that song? Where are they now? What does that lyric mean? Send your questions about songs, albums, and the musicians who make them to MusicOnTheRecord@gmail.com. Bradford Brady and John Maron are freelance music writers based in Raleigh.

The Spiritual Center of Lily Dale – Gothic Beauty Magazine

Chloe Heydt, at the 2015 Lily Dale Victorian ice cream social

The town of Lily Dale, an hour south of Buffalo in southwest New York state, has a reputation for spiritualism. In fact it was founded for this exact purpose. Not to be confused with a haunted town, this center for enlightenment and healing prides itself on helping people and providing answers to lifes big questions. Every year an extensive programme of events is held over the summer, attracting thousands of open-minded individuals and the spiritually curious.

This, their 138th year, boasts an impressive roster of registered mediums throughout the season as well as daily meditation and healing sessions, yoga and astrology courses, lectures on the science of spirituality and even ghost walks. The beginning of the summer schedule is marked by Tibetan Monks consecrating and creating a painstaking Mandala in grains of colored sand. Visitors to Lily Dale often return year after year and some even buy property there, to make the spiritual center their home. Lisa Williams tells us more about this special place and what it has to offer.

Lily Dale was founded in 1879 so it could be a village of spiritualists and free thinkers where spiritual meetings were held every year. It has now become home for many mediums around the world and we have a summer camp open from the last weekend in June to Labor Day every year, although Lily Dale is open all year round for many church services, workshops and readings.

How many visitors do you get a year and what do most visitors come for? We get on average 25-30 thousand visitors a year, and they come for many reasons. We hold workshops on various spiritual topics and in the summer we have mediumship outdoor services daily which people are welcome to come and be part of the audience.

People can buy property in lily Dale, but not in the usual way. Why restrict real estate in this way? We dont restrict our real estate as such, but are continuing with the history of Lily Dale to be a Religious Spiritualist Community and therefore we do require someone to be within our religion and a member of the Lily Dale Assembly and so its a place where visitors can continue to come and learn.

How many people live there and how long do people generally stay a resident? We have over 100 people who live here, all year round but in the summer that number grows in size as many of our residents live in warmer climates. We have many residents who have lived here all of their lives. We like to say that once you come to Lily Dale, you take a piece of it with you and you never truly leave, it will always be with you.

Articles on the internet refer to Lily Dale as a haunted town, but Lily Dales own website prefers spiritual. Why is it important to make the distinction? Its important to us that we promote our religion and we as the residents do not see it as haunted as we feel that is derogatory and negative terminology. Although many people may have sightings of spirit, these sightings are not negative, and we truly feel that the pioneers of spiritualism are still walking among us.

Why do you think Lily Dale is such a hub for spiritual activity? Everyone who comes here has an energy and part of that energy stays here, from thousands upon thousands of visitors. That energy has become a catalyst for the building blocks for our spirit and spirits that come through.

How did the Pet Cemetery begin and why is it important for Lily Dale to have a cemetery dedicated to animals? It has become a tradition and we see it as the walk home for our animal kingdom.

Can people be buried in Lily Dale? No because of NY state law.

Your summer season of programs not only includes talks by spiritualists, but also scientists and academics. Why include both sides of the coin? We include both sides of the coin because its important that we can give a scientific point of view and cover all aspects of Spirituality. We have many people searching and when we have a scientific side it helps people process the spiritual side. We find it offers balance.

Among the numerous registered mediums, lectures and workshops taking place in the summer season, Lily Dale also offers ghost walks but you make it clear they are not ghost hunts. Have you had people come to ghost hunt? We have people from all walks of life and of course there are some that come to hunt for ghosts but that is why we consider our walks more spiritual than hunting for ghosts.

Is there a particularly special highlight for the 2017 season? We have season highlights throughout the summer. The Tibetan Monks open the season and then we have various speakers from world renown mediums and psychic, authors, lectures. We are hosting the Science of all things Spiritual and a Ukulele Jamboree. These are definitely events not to be missed!

This is Lily Dales 138th season, what keeps people coming back to Lily Dale? People are searching for answers, hope and healing and this is what brings people through our gates. Everyone wants to have something to believe in, and we can help them with that. As these gifts are becoming more and more common people are intrigued and need help developing and our summer program has a variety of workshops for everyone. Plus we are a lot of fun!

Self-Realization Is In Every Moment – Endless Satsang

(Note: This article is translated into Polish here.)

Recently, I was talking with a teacher and friend about self realization. He made a simple comment that the soul is the sum total of all of our experiences. It struck me how this meant that every experience adds to our soul, and there is no experience that can detract from it. Since we share experiences with many other souls, that would mean that our souls overlap. Anywhere our experience overlaps, our souls would also overlap. And since we overlap with so many other souls, ultimately all souls are connected through this sharing of experience. So whenever a particular soul has a profound experience of awakened consciousness, or self realization, their experience of the totality of consciousness by definition includes all experiences and all the apparent souls out there.

Every experience is actually an experience of self-realization. In each and every experience, we are realizing a capacity or aspect of our soul, and by extension, an aspect of our true nature as Being. Since all there is, is Being, every experience is an experience of Being. Every experience adds to the totality of our understanding and realization of our true nature. There is no other possibility.

This is a dilemma if we believe there is a better, truer, more spiritual aspect of our Being that we want to be realizing. What if my anger is part of my true nature? What if my greed, lust, fear, sadness, confusion, and pain are all part of my true nature, along with all of the love, peace, and joy that are also part of Being? In hoping and waiting for a better experience, we may be overlooking the significance of our present moment experience, just as it is. It isn't that sadness and greed are equivalent to peace and joy, but every experience has significance, since every experience is an experience of our true nature.

The experiences that we may reject because we think they aren't the correct experience may actually be made up of the same peace, joy, and love we are hoping to have. We think of this world as a world of opposites, or dualities. But if we look more closely, we find that the so-called opposites are really just different amounts of one thing. Light and dark are an example: There is no such thing as dark, only light existing as photons. There are no darkons. You cant buy a flashdark and point it at things and make them disappear. However when there is little or no light, we call that dark, even though there is no such thing. Similarly, the only thing that exists is our true nature, which is filled with joy and love. If we are experiencing little or no joy or love, we may call that sadness or fear, although those are really only the relative absence of joy and love. And of course, there is often some joy in sadness and some love even in fear.

What if every experience is a unique jewel of our multifaceted Being? What if every experience adds to the abundance of our soul and moves us toward the greatness of our true nature? What if what you are experiencing right now is unfolding your self-realization in the most amazing and unique way? Perhaps there isn't some special experience of self-realization that is the way to realize true nature. Maybe every souls realization of true nature is meant to unfold in a completely unique way so that every souls experience can also add to the experience of the One Being that all souls are a part of, just as every experience adds to the richness of your soul.

We resist this perspective when we want spiritual realization to look a certain way. We want our realization to be like the dramatic experiences you read about in the spiritual biographies of the great masters and teachers. We use the fact that there are bigger experiences of self-realization to discount and reject the smaller experiences we are already having. And yet, the experiences we are having are also aspects of our Being. Everything from the most human thought or emotion to the most cosmic dimension of existence is an aspect of Being.

While there is freedom in experiencing a profound realization of an infinite dimension of our true nature, that freedom is only added to by an experience of a very human or limited dimension of that same true nature. Every experience adds to your soul, and no experience subtracts from your Being. This doesnt mean you dont discriminate between a small experience and a big one. Just as you can easily tell the difference between a teacup and a swimming pool, it is inherent in a small experience for it to feel small and for an infinite experience to feel infinite.

While the experience you are having right now while reading these words may or may not be the biggest realization of your life so far, it is the realization you are having right now. It will naturally feel big or small or somewhere in between. It will naturally have the specific qualities of this unique moment and not the qualities of any other experience. And yet, because it is happening right now, it is the most important realization you can have. In fact, it is the only realization you can have. It's too late or too soon to have any other experience than the one you are having right now, and this experience is making your soul richer and more fully realized than it was a moment ago.

Will you accept the precious gift the mystery is giving you right now?

why fear this moment when no thoughts come at last I lie naked in the arms of experience

why fear this moment when no words come at last I find rest in the lap of silence

why fear this moment when love finds itself alone at last I am embraced by infinity itself

why fear this moment when judgment falls away at last my defenses fail to keep intimacy at bay

why fear this moment when hope is lost at last my foolish dreams are surrendered to perfection
