Rose’s First Launch – Video

Rose #39;s First Launch
Here #39;s some footage of our trip to Maryland. Rose and I both got to launch model rockets for the first time ever! It was amazing! We attended monthly launches at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and even flew in the yearly Apollo 11 Commemoration Moon Mission Yearly Model Rocket Launch Contest. We dedicated the video to Mr. Ed Pearson, because he helped us learn how to build and launch our model rockets. We hope this video inspires kids of all ages who may have any interest in STEM education, rocketry, or just curious to watch a five year old build and launch her own rocket! -SjRoseFrom:Sj RoseViews:13 1ratingsTime:09:59More inEducation

Aerosols: Airborne particles in Earth’s atmosphere – Video

Aerosols: Airborne particles in Earth #39;s atmosphere
A supercomputer at NASA #39;s Goddard Space Flight Center was used to map aerosols - particles suspended in the air - based on observations from August 2006 - April 2007. The result is surprisingly lovely. I #39;ve marked a couple of pints you want to pay attention to, like a volcanic eruption near Madagascar; the effect of the event is stunning. Giant Solar Eruption Captured In NASA Video – Video

Giant Solar Eruption Captured In NASA Video
The sun unleashed a monster eruption of super-hot plasma Friday (Nov. 16) in back-to-back solar storms captured on camera by a NASA spacecraft. The giant sun eruption, called a solar prominence, occurred at 1 am EST (0600 GMT), with another event flaring up four hours later. The prominences was so large, it expanded beyond the camera view of NASA #39;s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which captured high-definition video of the solar eruption. In the video, a colossal loop of glowing red plasma erupts from the lower left of the sun, arcing up and out of frame as it blasts away from the star. "The red-glowing looped material is plasma, a hot gas made of electrically charged hydrogen and helium," officials with NASA #39;s Goddard Space Flight Center, which oversees the SDO mission, explained in a description. "The prominence plasma flows along a tangled and twisted structure of magnetic fields generated by the sun #39;s internal dynamo. An erupting prominence occurs when such a structure becomes unstable and bursts outward, releasing the plasma." Friday #39;s solar eruption does not appear to be aimed at Earth, so will likely have little effect on our planet. But that was not the case earlier this week when a powerful solar flare erupted on Monday (Nov. 12). That flare registered as an M6-class eruption, a moderate but still intense solar event.From:ApocagroovyViews:3029 23ratingsTime:00:58More inEducation

Paint by Particle – Video

Satellites, balloon-borne instruments and ground-based devices make 30 million observations of the atmosphere each day. Yet these measurements still give an incomplete picture of the complex interactions within Earth #39;s atmosphere. Enter climate models. Through mathematical experiments, modelers can move Earth forward or backward in time to create a dynamic portrait of the planet. NASA Goddard #39;s Global Modeling and Assimilation Office recently ran a simulation of the atmosphere that captured how winds whip aerosols around the world. Such simulations allow scientists to better understand how these tiny particulates travel in the atmosphere and influence weather and climate. In this visualization, covering August 2006 to April 2007, watch as dust and sea salt swirl inside cyclones, carbon bursts from fires, sulfate streams from volcanoes mdash;and see how these aerosols paint the modeled world. The annual Leonid meteor shower will peak overnight tonight (Nov. 16) and early Saturday (Nov. 17), and you can watch the celestial fireworks show live via a NASA webcast.

Scientists at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., will provide a live views of theLeonid meteor shower from an all-sky camera beginning late Friday afternoon and running through early Saturday morning.

The webcast will be embedded below when it begins by 7 p.m. EST (0000 Nov. 17 GMT):

Live stream videos at Ustream

You can also watch the Ustream feed directly from NASA here: http://www.nasa.gov/topics/solarsystem/features/watchtheskies/leonids_2012.html

The meteor shower will be at its best before dawn on Saturday, at about 3 a.m. EST (0800 GMT), scientists say.

The Leonid meteor shower is created by dusty debris from the comet Tempel-Tuttle, which orbits the sun once every 33 years. Each November, the Earth plows through the comet's debris stream to create amazing meteor displays.

Top 10 Leonid Meteor Shower Facts

This year, NASA scientists predict the Leonids may be seen at a rate of 20 to 30 meteors per hour over the Americas, weather permitting. It is vital to pick an observing spot far from city lights to obtain the best views.

Leonid Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight: How to Watch Online

UPDATE: The peak of the Leonid meteor shower has passed. See stargazer photos of the 2012 Leonids here:Leonid Meteor Shower of 2012 (Photos )

Stargazers are hoping for clear, dark skies tonight when the annual Leonid meteor shower will be at its best, but if Mother Nature spoils your show, you can always catch the celestial fireworks display live online.

Scientists at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., will broadcast live views of the 2012 Leonid meteor showeronline from an all-sky camera at the center. Clear weather is forecast during the event, center officials said.

You can watch the Leonid meteor shower live here on SPACE.com via NASA. The webcast is expected to begin by 7 p.m. EST (0000 Nov. 17 GMT).

This sky map for the Leonid meteor shower of 2012 shows the location of the radiant (center) before dawn on Saturday, Nov. 17 - the peak viewing time. CREDIT: StarDate.org

"We're predicting 20-30 meteors per hour over the Americas, and as many as 200-300 per hour over Asia," NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke of the Meteoroid Environment Office the Marshall center said in a statement. "Our forecast is in good accord with independent theoretical work by other astronomers." [Leonid Meteor Shower of 2012 (Photos and Sky Maps)]

The Leonid meteor shower occurs each year in mid-November when the Earth passes through a stream of debris left over by the comet Tempel-Tuttle. The comet orbits the sun once every 33 years and its meteor shower appears to radiate out of the constellation Leo, hence the shooting star display's name.

This year, the peak of the meteor shower will occur in the wee hours of Saturday (Nov. 17), but meteors from the display should still be visible in the night before and after the peak. Because the moon is nearing its new phase, and will have set before the actual peak of the shower, the 2012 Leonids could impressive, NASA officials said.

"The new moon will set the stage for what could be one of the best Leonid showers in years," they explained in a stargazing alert.

In fact, the Leonid meteor shower has already been spotted by some eager stargazers, including night sky photographer John Chumack of Dayton, Ohio. Chumack captured a video video of early Leonid meteors during an observing session late Tuesday (Nov. 13).

LSU Alum Lands Space Award! Sid Champagne launched his journalism career from the Baton Rouge campus in 1985. On November 13, 2012 the National Space Club honored him with its Harry Kolcum News and Communications Award. This Louisiana native has been covering space flight for nearly a quarter century as WFTV #39;s aerospace photojournalist. And, while his "Cajun" humility was evident when accepting the honor, the club members realize the many invaluable contributions made by him with his excellent coverage of our nation #39;s manned and unmanned programs. more at scitech.quickfound.net "This video takes a serious and humorous look at life in the low gravity environment of space flight. The video also includes onboard activities from Skylab to Space Shuttle missions. " Public domain film from NASA, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. en.wikipedia.org Weightlessness (or zero-g) is the condition that exists for an object or person when they experience little or no acceleration except the acceleration that defines their inertial trajectory, or the trajectory of pure free-fall. The physical path of an inertial trajectory depends only on the direction and strength of the sum of the gravitational attractions outside of the inertial reference frame. Accelerations that are not due to gravity are called "proper accelerations" and it is only these forces (such as a push from a floor or seat) that cause g-forces. Weight is the product of mass and the g-force acceleration. Weightlessness is therefore always produced by the absence of g-forces. Accelerometers, which can measure only accelerations that produce g-force and weight, cannot detect acceleration in weightless conditions, including free fall. The definition and use of #39;weightlessness #39; is difficult unless it is understood that the sensation of "weight" is only indirectly produced by gravity, and results not from gravitation acting alone (which is not felt), but instead by the mechanical forces that ...From:webdev17Views:58 6ratingsTime:08:41More inScience Technology
