There are different forms of silence. Goddard Space Flight Center Director Chris Scolese recalled that when he first became a manager, "They took my #39;engineer #39; card away." Things changed. Mars Rover Curiosity Finds Traces Of Carbon On Surface Of Red Planet Mars Rover Curiosity Finds Traces Of Carbon On Surface Of Red Planet Nasa #39;s Mars rover Curiosity, dispatched to look for the chemical ingredients and environments for microbial life, has found hints of carbon, though whether this building block for life on Earth has played a similar role on Mars is unknown, scientists said on Monday. "Just finding carbon somewhere doesn #39;t mean that it has anything to do with life, or the finding of a habitable environment," lead scientist John Grotzinger, with the California Institute of Technology, told reporters at the American Geophysical Union conference in San Francisco. "If you have organic carbon and you don #39;t have any water, you don #39;t have a habitable environment," he said. Even with carbon and water, life needs other chemicals, such as sulfur, oxygen, phosphorous and nitrogen, to form and evolve. "It #39;s not unexpected that this sand pile would not be rich in organics. It #39;s been exposed to the harsh Martian environment," added planetary scientist Paul Mahaffy, with Nasa #39;s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. "It #39;s really going to be an exciting hunt over the course of this mission to find early environments that might be protected from this surface Mars environment and see what we can add to the carbon story," Mahaffy said. NASA | Death-Defying Comets Explore the Sun #39;s Atmosphere
To observe how winds move high in Earth #39;s atmosphere, scientists sometimes release clouds of barium as tracers to track how the material corkscrews and sweeps around #65533; but scientists have no similar technique to study the turbulent atmosphere of the sun. So researchers were excited in December 2011, when Comet Lovejoy swept right through the sun #39;s corona with its long tail streaming behind it. NASA #39;s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) captured images of the comet, showing how its long tail was buffeted by systems around the sun, offering scientists a unique way of observing movement as if they #39;d orchestrated the experiment themselves. Since comet tails have ionized gases, they are also affected by the sun #39;s magnetic field, and can act as tracers of the complex magnetic system higher up in the atmosphere. I made this video using videos from NASA/Goddard (svs.gsfc.nasa.gov and combined them to show all three facets of the water cycle in one animation: evaporation, vapor transport, and precipitation. The original videos I found are at http://www.youtube.com - evaporation http://www.youtube.com - water vapor http://www.youtube.com - precipitation I can do no better than quote the original uploader, djxatlanta (www.youtube.com for the description: The three animations of atmospheric phenomena were created using data from the GEOS-5 atmospheric model on the cubed-sphere, run at 14-km global resolution for 25-days. Variables animated here include hourly evaporation, water vapor and precipitation. I turned the animations into loops by dissolving the ends to the beginnings and overlaid all three using blue for evaporation, magenta for water vapor, and yellow for precipitation.
