The Seychelles islands, renowned for its exotic sceneries, will once again be featured in an upcoming international television series.

A UK-based production house Baby Cow Productions has identified some of the islands uncrowded and idyllic beaches as the perfect setting for latest edition of its TV series High and Dry. Rich in wild nature, the beaches backdrop, will provide the perfect location for their plot a plane crash survival on a deserted island to unfold.

The Seychelles Tourism Board is fully supporting the production with the help of other relevant authorities, considering this will be a huge plus for the country, especially for the tourism industry.

Announcing the new project, the Chief Executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board, Mrs. Sherin Francis, revealed that up to now Baby Cow had been choosing locations in Asia for such productions and that the Philippines was originally the preferred location for the shooting that will now be done in Seychelles.

Thanks to the good relations we have with the production company and a few others in the UK we managed to convince them to choose Seychelles for once and see how it goes and we are happy that they finally agreed to film the series in the Seychelles, said Mrs. Francis.

The filming is expected to last four weeks from July 9 to August 4, 2017. The crew will be shooting scenes at some of the well-known beaches on the Seychelles main island, Mah, namely Anse-Major, Anse du Riz, and the Barbarons beach.

Anse Major, which borders the Morne Seychellois reserve in the northwest of Mah is accessible by boat or an intense hike offering gorgeous coastal views is popular among both the locals and tourists. This is also where key scenes will be filmed, although most of the filming will be done during the weekdays.

As the scenario involves a plane crash on a deserted island, Mrs. Francis is calling on the corporation of all stakeholders namely the general public, boat owners and other tourism operators during the filming period.

We are aware that a lot of the beaches especially Anse Major are habitually visited by our locals and visitors, reason why filming will take place on one beach at a time. We cannot restrict access to the beaches but we are simply asking for the cooperation of the general public and tour operators bringing clients to these beaches. For example, at Anse Major you have two stretches of beaches and only one of them will be used for the production at any given time so that the other one can be available to visitors, said Mrs. Francis.

British comedian Marc Wootton will be the lead actor in the series. The total budget for the filming of the series in Seychelles is around 1.7 million. Baby Cow Productions is financing the entire cost of the production. The Seychelles Tourism Board has assisted mainly in getting them the necessary authorizations. Several local companies including small contractors, boat companies and even a local production house are expected to benefit through the production.

Once the series starts airing on Channel 4 in the UK, although it wont be directly mentioning Seychelles, the fact that the beautiful beaches, clear turquoise waters and lush tropical vegetation will be featured this will help to push Seychelles into the UK limelight, which is a market that has been seeing remarkable increase in visitor arrivals to Seychelles over the last two years.

With our current budget, it would have been impossible to acquire such immense publicity for the Seychelles, said Mrs. Francis, adding that STB is also bringing a PR company onboard to feature a Behind the Scenes documentary about the filming. It is customary for viewers of such TV series to be given the chance to follow what went on behind the making of the production, which is an aspect that one rarely gets to see. This also helps to create a forum for viewers to engage and discuss the series and also the location.

To note that Baby Cow productions established in 1999, is an award-winning production house in the UK with a reputation for producing some much-loved comedy series. Aside of High and Dry some of its other productions include Hunderby, Hebburn, The Trip, Gavin & Stacey to name but a few.

Match report COSAFA Castle Cup Group B Seychelles vs Mozambique – KickOff.com

Posted: 28 June 2017 Time: 19:50

Mozambique kept themselves in the running for a place in the COSAFA Castle Cup quarter-finals following Tuesday's 2-1 win over Seychelles, who are now out of contention.

With Group B joint-leaders Zimbabwe and Madagascar playing to a draw in the nights other game, the door was left open for one of Seychelles and Mozambique to take their chance, which is just what the Pirates did.

The result gives Mozambique their first points of the tournament, leaving them just one adrift of the top two heading into the final round of group matches, while Seychelles are mathematically out of the running with zero points from two games.

REPORT: Zim stay top despite Madagascar draw

Seychelles thought they had taken the lead with 13 minutes gone after putting the ball in the back of the net, although the celebrations were cut short as the referee had blown for a foul in the build-up.

It was then Mozambique who came close but Muze saw his shot cleared off the line by Eric, before the Pirates went up the other end and brought a save from the goalkeeper through Halls effort.

The Mambas then looked for all the world as though they would take a 1-0 lead into the break as Nelson went clean through one-on-one with the goalkeeper, only to somehow place his effort wide of the target.

Mozambique seemed to take control after the interval as Nelson forced the keeper into another save with 47 minutes gone, although the gloveman was beaten just one minute later as Stelio put the ball into the back of the net.

However, Seychelles werent out of it yet and found a reply with 63 minutes gone through Melanie to leave the game finely poised entering the final half an hour of play.

Hall then came close to turning the game on its head but saw his shot turned away by the keeper, and it would prove a vital save as it was the Mozambicans who would score next, Simango firing home to restore the away teams lead with 20 minutes left on the clock.

TEAMS

Seychelles: Dingwall, Esther, Marie, Melanie, Waye-Hive, Tamboo, Hall, Mellie, Onezia, Hopprich, Padayachy

5 Interesting Things about Seychelles – Africa.com

The Republic of Seychelles is an archipelago made up of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean. These islands are classified into 42 inner granitic islands and 73 outer coralline islands. The 42 granitic islands, or the Granitic Seychelles as they are called, lie in the central position of the Seychelles Bank and are composed of granite rock. They make up the majority of the inner islands of Seychelles. The outer coralline islands, or Coralline Seychelles, are the group of islands that are not on the shallow Seychelles Bank, which is the location of the Granitic Seychelles.

The beauty that comes with the islands has made Seychelles a popular destination for holidays and honeymooners. Some of the most popular people to spend their honeymoon in Seychelles include Prince William and Duchess Kate, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, Ronan Keating and Storm Uechtritz, George Clooney andAmal Alamuddin, as well as Nicky Hilton andJames Rothschild. To ensure total privacy of their celebrity tourists, the Government of Seychelles introduced a law making it an offense for a Seychellois citizen to provide assistance to any paparazzi who was cunning enough to hire a fishing boat and try to take photographs from offshore. We want people, famous or not, to be able to relax on their holiday. They shouldnt have to worry about being spied upon, says Alain St.Ange, the Tourism Minister for Seychelles, to international media.

After their return to the UK, Prince Williams office at St. Jamess Palace released a statement thanking the government and people of Seychelles for the great time that the Prince and Duchess had spent there. The couple thoroughly enjoyed their time together, and they are grateful to the Seychelles Government for their assistance in making the honeymoon such a memorable and special 10 days, read the statement.

Alternative Title: Republic of Seychelles

Seychelles

National anthem of Seychelles

Seychelles, island republic in the western Indian Ocean, comprising about 115 islands. The islands are home to lush tropical vegetation, beautiful beaches, and a wide variety of marine life. Situated between latitudes 4 and 11 S and longitudes 46 and 56 E, the major islands of Seychelles are located about 1,000 miles (1,600 km) east of Kenya and about 700 miles (1,100 km) northeast of Madagascar. The capital, Victoria, is situated on the island of Mah.

Seychelles, one of the worlds smallest countries, is composed of two main island groups: the Mah group of more than 40 central, mountainous granitic islands and a second group of more than 70 outer, flat, coralline islands. The islands of the Mah group are rocky and typically have a narrow coastal strip and a central range of hills. The overall aspect of those islands, with their lush tropical vegetation, is that of high hanging gardens overlooking silver-white beaches and clear lagoons. The highest point in Seychelles, Morne Seychellois (2,969 feet [905 metres]), situated on Mah, is located within this mountainous island group. The coralline islands, rising only a few feet above sea level, are flat with elevated coral reefs at different stages of formation. These islands are largely waterless, and very few have a resident population.

The climate is tropical oceanic, with little temperature variation during the year. Daily temperatures rise to the mid-80s F (low 30s C) in the afternoon and fall to the low 70s F (low 20s C) at night. Precipitation levels vary greatly from island to island; on Mah, annual precipitation ranges from 90 inches (2,300 mm) at sea level to 140 inches (3,560 mm) on the mountain slopes. Humidity is persistently high but is ameliorated somewhat in locations windward of the prevailing southeast trade winds.

Of the roughly 200 plant species found in Seychelles, some 80 are unique to the islands, including screw pines (see pandanus), several varieties of jellyfish trees, latanier palms, the bois rouge, the bois de fer, Wrights gardenia, and the most famous, the coco de mer. The coco de merwhich is found on only two islandsproduces a fruit that is one of the largest and heaviest known and is valued by a number of Asian cultures for believed aphrodisiac, medicinal, mystic, and other properties. The Seychellois government closely monitors the quantity and status of the trees, and, although commerce is regulated to prevent overharvesting, poaching is a concern.

Geography and Science: Fact or Fiction?

Wildlife includes a remarkably diverse array of marine life, including more than 900 identified species of fish; green sea turtles and giant tortoises also inhabit the islands. Endemic species include birds such as Seychelles bulbuls and cave-dwelling Seychelles swiftlets; several species of local tree frogs, snails, and wormlike caecilians; Seychelles wolf snakes and house snakes; tiger chameleons; and others. Endemic mammals are few; both fruit bats (Pteropus seychellensis) and Seychelles sheath-tailed bats (Coleura seychellensis) are endemic to the islands. Indian mynahs, barn owls, and tenrecs (small shrewlike or hedgehoglike mammals introduced from Madagascar) are also found.

Considerable efforts have been made to preserve the islands marked biodiversity. Seychelles government has established several nature preserves and marine parks, including the Aldabra Islands and Valle de Mai National Park, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Aldabra Islands, a large atoll, are the site of a preserve inhabited by tens of thousands of giant tortoises, the worlds oldest living creatures, which government conservation efforts have helped rescue from the brink of extinction. Valle de Mai National Park is the only place where all six of the palm species endemic to Seychelles, including the coco de mer, may be found together. Cousin Island is home to a sanctuary for land birds, many endemic to the islands, including the Seychelles sunbird (a type of hummingbird) and the Seychelles brush warbler. The nearby Cousine Island is part private resort and part nature preserve, noted for its sea turtles, giant tortoises, and assorted land birds. Bird Island is the breeding ground for millions of terns, turtle doves, shearwaters, frigate birds, and other seabirds that flock there each year.

The original French colonists on the previously uninhabited islands, along with their black slaves, were joined in the 19th century by deportees from France. Asians from China, India, and Malaya (Peninsular Malaysia) arrived later in smaller numbers. Widespread intermarriage has resulted in a population of mixed descent.

Creole, also called Seselwa, is the mother tongue of most Seychellois. Under the constitution, Creole, English, and French are recognized as national languages.

More than four-fifths of the population are Roman Catholics. There are also Anglicans, Christians of other denominations, Hindus, and Muslims.

More than four-fifths of the population live on Mah, many of them in the capital city, Victoria. The birth and death rates, as well as the annual population growth rate, are below the global average. Some one-fourth of the population are younger than age 15, and about one-half are under age 30. Life expectancy for both men and women is significantly higher than the global average.

Seychelles has a mixed, developing economy that is heavily dependent upon the service sector in general and the tourism industry in particular. Despite continued visible trade deficits, the economy has experienced steady growth. The gross domestic product (GDP) is growing more rapidly than the population. The gross national income (GNI) per capita is significantly higher than those found in most nearby continental African countries.

Agriculture accounts for only a fraction of the GDP and employs an equally modest proportion of the workforce. Arable land is limited and the soil is generally poorand the country remains dependent upon imported foodstuffsbut copra (from coconuts), cinnamon bark, vanilla, tea, limes, and essential oils are exported. Seychelles has a modern fishing industry that supplies both domestic and foreign markets; canned tuna is a particularly important product. The extraction of guano for export is also an established economic activity.

The countrys growing manufacturing sectorwhich has expanded to account for almost one-sixth of the total GDPis composed largely of food-processing plants; production of alcoholic beverages and of soft drinks is particularly significant. Animal feed, paint, and other goods are also produced.

Seychelles sizable trade deficit is offset by income from the tourism industry and from aid and investment. Although the countrys relative prosperity has not made it a preferred aid recipient, it does receive assistance from the World Bank, the European Union, the African Development Bank, and a variety of contributing countries, and aid obtained per capita is relatively high. The Central Bank of Seychelles, located in Victoria, issues the official currency, the Seychelles rupee.

Seychelles main imports are petroleum products, machinery, and foodstuffs. Canned tuna, copra, frozen fish, and cinnamon are the most important exports, together with the reexport of petroleum products. Significant trade partners include France, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and Germany.

The service sector accounts for nearly four-fifths of the GDP and employs the largest proportion of the workforce, almost three-fourths of all labourers. After the opening of an international airport on Mah in 1971, the tourism industry grew rapidly, and at the beginning of the 21st century it provided almost one-fourth of the total GDP. Each year Seychelles draws thousands of tourists, many attracted by the islands magnificent venues for scuba diving, surfing, windsurfing, fishing, swimming, and sunbathing. The warm southeasterly trade winds offer ideal conditions for sailing, and the waters around Mah and the other islands are afloat with small boats.

The majority of Seychelles roadways are paved, most of which are on the islands of Mah and Praslin; there are no railroads. Ferry services operate between the islandsfor example, linking Victoria with destinations that include Praslin and La Digue. Air service is centred on Seychelles International Airport, located near Victoria on Mah, and the smaller airports and airstrips found on several islands. Seychelles has air connections with a number of foreign cities and direct flights to major centres that include London, Paris, Frankfurt, Rome, and Bangkok. Scheduled domestic flights, provided by Air Seychelles, chiefly offer service between Mah and Praslin, although chartered flights elsewhere are also available. The tsunami that reached Seychelles in 2004 damaged portions of the transportation infrastructure, including the road linking Victoria with the international airport.

Telecommunications infrastructure in Seychelles is quite developed. The country has a high rate of cellular telephone useamong the highest in sub-Saharan Africaand, at the beginning of the 21st century, the use of personal computers in Seychelles was several times the average for the region.

Under the 1993 constitution, since amended, Seychelles is a republic. The head of state and government is the president, who is directly elected by popular vote and may hold office for up to two consecutive five-year terms. Members of the National Assembly serve five-year terms. A majority of the available National Assembly seats are filled by direct election; a smaller portion are distributed on a proportional basis to those parties that win a minimum of one-tenth of the vote. The president appoints a Council of Ministers, which acts as an advisory body. The country is divided into 25 administrative divisions.

The Seychellois judiciary includes a Court of Appeal, a Supreme Court, and Magistrates Courts; the Constitutional Court is a branch of the Supreme Court.

Suffrage is universal; Seychellois are eligible to vote at age 17. Women participate actively in the government of the country and have held numerous posts, including positions in the cabinet and a proportion of seats in the National Assembly.

The Peoples Party (formerly the Seychelles Peoples Progressive Front) was the sole legal party from 1978 until 1991. It is still the countrys primary political party, but other parties are also active in Seychellois politics, including the New Democratic Party (formerly the Seychelles Democratic Party), the Seychelles National Party, and the Seychelles Movement for Democracy.

Seychelles defense forces are made up of an army, a coast guard (including naval and airborne wings), and a national guard. There is no conscription; military service is voluntary, and individuals are generally eligible at age 18 (although younger individuals may serve with parental consent).

In general, homes play a highly visible part in maintaining traditional Seychellois life. Many old colonial houses are well preserved, although corrugated iron roofs have generally replaced the indigenous palm thatch. Groups tend to gather on the verandahs of their houses, which are generally recognized as social centres.

The basis of the school system is a free, compulsory, 10-year public school education. Education standards have risen steadily, and nearly all children of primary-school age attend school. The countrys first university, the University of Seychelles, began accepting students in 2009. The literacy rate in Seychelles is significantly higher than the regional and global averages for both men and women.

Seychellois culture has been shaped by a combination of European, African, and Asian influences. The main European influence is French, recognizable in Seselwa, the Creole language that is the lingua franca of the islands, and in Seychellois food and religion; the French introduced Roman Catholicism, the religion of the majority of the islanders. African influence is revealed in local music and dance as well as in Seselwa. Asian elements are evident in the islands cuisine but are particularly dominant in business and trade.

Holidays observed in Seychelles include Liberation Day, which commemorates the anniversary of the 1977 coup, on June 5; National Day, June 18; Independence Day, June 29; the Feast of the Assumption, August 15; All Saints Day, November 1; the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8; and Christmas, December 25.

Because of the exorbitant expense of the large and lavish wedding receptions that are part of Seychellois tradition, many couples never marry; instead, they may choose to live en mnage, achieving a de facto union by cohabitating without marriage. There is little or no social stigma related to living en mnage, and the arrangement is recognized by the couples family and friends. The instance of couples living en mnage increases particularly among lower income groups.

Dance plays an important role in Seychellois society. Both the sga and the moutya, two of the most famous dances performed in Seychelles, mirror traditional African customs. The sensual dances blend religion and social relations, two elements central to African life. The complicated and compelling dance movements were traditionally carried out under moonlight to the beat of African drums. Dances were once regular events in village halls, but these have largely died out in recent years; now dances take place in modern nightclubs.

Seychellois enjoy participating in and watching several team sports. The national stadium, located in Victoria, offers a year-round program of events. Mens and womens volleyball are popular, and several Seychellois players and referees participate at the international level. Football (soccer) is also a favourite, and Seychellois teams frequently travel to East Africa and India to play in exhibition matches and tournaments. The Seychelles national Olympic committee was established in 1979 and was recognized that year by the International Olympic Committee. The country made its official Olympic debut at the 1980 Moscow Games, but its first Olympic athlete was Henri Dauban de Silhouette, who competed for Great Britain in the javelin throw at the 1924 Paris Games.

Much of the countrys radio, television, and print media is under government control. There are several independent publications, including Seychelles Weekly and Vizyon.

The islands were known by traders from the Persian Gulf centuries ago, but the first recorded landing on the uninhabited Seychelles was made in 1609 by an expedition of the British East India Company. The archipelago was explored by the Frenchman Lazare Picault in 1742 and 1744 and was formally annexed to France in 1756. The archipelago was named Schelles, later changed by the British to Seychelles. War between France and Britain led to the surrender of the archipelago to the British in 1810, and it was formally ceded to Great Britain by the Treaty of Paris in 1814. The abolition of slavery in the 1830s deprived the islands European colonists of their labour force and compelled them to switch from raising cotton and grains to cultivating less-labour-intensive crops such as coconut, vanilla, and cinnamon. In 1903 Seychellesuntil that time administered as a dependency of Mauritiusbecame a separate British crown colony. A Legislative Council with elected members was introduced in 1948.

In 1963 the United States leased an area on the main island, Mah, and built an air force satellite tracking station there; this brought regular air travel to Seychelles for the first time, in the form of a weekly seaplane shuttle that operated from Mombasa, Kenya.

In 1970 Seychelles obtained a new constitution, universal adult suffrage, and a governing council with an elected majority. Self-government was granted in 1975 and independence in 1976, within the Commonwealth of Nations. In 1975 a coalition government was formed with James R. Mancham as president and France-Albert Ren as prime minister. In 1977, while Mancham was abroad, Ren became president in a coup dtat led by the Seychelles Peoples United Party (later restyled the Seychelles Peoples Progressive Front [SPPF], from 2009 the Peoples Party [Parti Lepep]).

In 1979 a new constitution transformed Seychelles into a one-party socialist state, with Rens SPPF designated the only legal party. This change was not popular with many Seychellois, and during the 1980s there were several coup attempts. Faced with mounting pressure from the countrys primary sources of foreign aid, Rens administration began moving toward more democratic rule in the early 1990s, with the return of multiparty politics and the promulgation of a new constitution. The country also gradually abandoned its socialist economy and began to follow market-based economic strategies by privatizing most parastatal companies, encouraging foreign investment, and focusing efforts on marketing Seychelles as an offshore business and financial hub. As Seychelles entered the 21st century, the SPPF continued to dominate the political scene. After the return of multiparty elections, Ren was reelected three times before eventually resigning in April 2004 to allow Vice Pres. James Michel to succeed him as president.

In late 2004 some of the islands were hit by a tsunami, which severely damaged the environment and the countrys economy. The economy was an important topic in the campaigning leading up to the presidential election of 2006, in which Michel emerged with a narrow victory to win his first elected term. He was reelected in 2011. One of Michels ongoing concerns was piracy in the Indian Ocean, which had surged since 2009 and threatened the countrys fishing and tourism industries. To that end, the Seychellois government worked with several other countries and international organizations to curb the illegal activity.

In October 2015 Michel called for an early presidential election, rather than wait until it was due in 2016. Michel was standing for his third term, again representing the Peoples Party. The election was held December 35, 2015. For the first time since the return of multiparty politics in 1993, the Peoples Partys candidate did not win outright in the first round of voting. Michel garnered 47.76 percent of the vote; his nearest challenger was Wavel Ramkalawan of the Seychelles National Party (SNP), who took 33.93 percent. Ramkalawan was an Anglican priest who was the leader of the SNP and had run for president in previous elections. The runoff election was held December 1618. On December 19 Michel was declared the winner by a very narrow margin, taking 50.15 percent of the vote, with only 193 votes between him and Ramkalawan. Michel was quickly sworn in the next day for his third term. Ramkalawan voiced allegations of voting irregularities and filed two petitions with the Constitutional Court with the goal of having the election results nullified: one claiming that neither candidate had received an absolute majority of the votes cast and another alleging that voting irregularities and electoral noncompliance had occurred. In May 2016 the court dismissed both petitions and upheld Michels victory but did note that there had been instances of voting irregularities and noncompliance with electoral laws.

In April 2016 the constitution was amended to change the number of consecutive terms that a president could serve. The number of terms was reduced from three to two.

Legislative elections were held September 810, 2016. For the first time since independence, the Peoples Party did not take a majority of the legislative seats. Instead, a coalition of opposition parties took control of the National Assembly, winning 15 of the 25 directly elected seats and receiving 4 of the 8 proportional representation seats while the Peoples Party won and received the rest of the directly elected and proportional representation seats. The new legislators were sworn in on September 27, 2016. Later that day Michel announced that he would step down as president, citing the need for new leadership. He formally resigned on October 16, and vice president Danny Faure was sworn in as president to complete the rest of Michels term.

Germany leads the way in visitor arrivals to Seychelles – eTurboNews

Almost halfway through the year 2017, Germany has taken the number one spot as the Seychelles main tourism market.

According to latest statistics the National Bureau of Statistics released on Thursday, Germany has sent 21,642 visitors to the island nation up to Sunday June 18, 2017. The figure is 29 percent above that recorded for the same period last year.

This means Germany has surpassed its closest contender, France, which has long been the main tourism market for Seychelles. France, which was number one since the beginning of the year is now second, having sent 20,922 visitors to the island destination. This trend was last observed in 2014, when Germany outperformed France in terms of visitor arrivals before France regained its position in 2015.

Air links between the Seychelles archipelago and Germany received a huge boost this year, which is surely contributing to the increase in German visitors. The national airline, Air Seychelles started twice-weekly direct flights to Dusseldorf in March 2017. In recent years, the route was primarily served by German leisure airline, Condor, which also started to charter a second direct weekly flight to Seychelles last year.

Commenting on the latest trend in visitor arrival statistics, the Chief Executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board, Mrs. Sherin Francis said: Seychelles today is more connected to its source market than ever and that is especially for Germany. More airlines to the destination also means more marketing support for Seychelles as well.

With Austrian Airlines scheduled to operate a once-weekly nonstop service to Seychelles in October this year, it is expected that this will further boost visitor arrivals from Germany and other German-speaking markets, including Switzerland and Austria.

It is to be noted that the Seychelles Tourism Board has been increasing efforts to create awareness of the destination among German travelers with the support of its partners, including the national airline and other international carriers that bring visitors from German-speaking markets to Seychelles.

It is important to always look at the big picture where growing the tourism number for the country. Where we see opportunity for growth, our team always look to capitalize on it. The team out there with our faithful partners has done a tremendous job and should be commended, added Mrs. Francis.

Visitor arrivals from Europe as a whole is also encouraging having increased by 21 percent so far compared to the same period last year. Aside from France, which has so far recorded a decrease of 4 percent, other European markets have recorded positive results so far Italy (6%), Russia (31%), Germany and UK & Northern Ireland (29%).

Ranked fourth among the leading markets, the United Kingdom is one that has also shown remarkable progress in recent years.

We also acknowledge the exponential growth of the UK Market over the last 2 years which has also allowed it to rise to the fourth position on the rank. The growth has been really encouraging. Again this has been possible through the consistent effort of our small team in UK and its partners, said Mrs Francis.

Generally, theres been positive results from the Seychelles tourism markets in Africa, America, the Middle and Asia in spite of a 17 percent decrease in arrival figures from China. To date, the total number of holidaymakers that have disembarked in Seychelles stands at 159,659, representing a 21 percent increase compared to last year, already positioning the island nation to record a tourism upswing in 2017.

It’s a wrap! Tropika Island of Treasure ends, boosting Seychelles tourism – eTurboNews

The grand finale of the 7th season of South African series Tropika Island of Treasure wrapped up Monday evening, after 12 weeks of spectacular coverage of the Seychelles islands.

Screened on South Africas SABC 3 channel, Tropika Island of Treasure Season 7 filmed in Seychelles was beamed to millions of viewers who tuned in for the one-hour weekly show.

TV personality Minnie Dlamini was the host of the season and equally well-known Jonathan Boynton-Lee starred as the Games Master.

Tropika Island of Treasure season 7 has subsequently been dubbed the best so far, since the start of the Tropika series. The picturesque powder-white beaches, clear turquoise waters and lush tropical vegetation of the Seychelles archipelago provided the perfect settings for the different challenges, while the contestants also got to enjoy one of the most desired tourist destinations in the world.

The PR value Seychelles has generated from this massive exposure is estimated at over 10 Million Rand, which is one of the biggest coverage the islands have ever received on international television in South Africa.

The Director of the Seychelles Tourism Board office in South Africa Mrs. Lena Hoareau said, This is a major boost to our marketing efforts on the South African market and the coverage was just incredible, touching many aspects of Seychelles as a destination.

During a Tropika Island of Treasure Reunion Special episode on Monday the contestants spoke about their unforgettable experiences while filming in Seychelles and how they were blown away by the beauty of the islands and warmth of the Seychellois people.

Several South African celebrities including actors, singers, musicians and professional dancers were recruited as contestants for the competition and they had to choose a partner through a series of auditions.

Once all teams were finalized, they headed to Seychelles for the challenges which saw them competing on several beaches, swimming and racing in the clear turquoise ocean, running through the streets of Victoria, cooking the famous nougat a local dessert made from coconut, making the perfect cocktail using the locally produced Takamaka Bay Rum and sorting out puzzles at the National Botanical Garden, among many other games filmed at several other breath-taking locations.

It was several weeks of fierce competition and battle of wits as viewers tuned in on a weekly basis to see the end product, which saw teams progress or eliminated along the way in their quest to take home the prize of one Million Rand.

Favorites Siv Ngesi and Khabonina Shabangu could not hold their lead in the final minutes of the competition. It was the team made up of singer Anga Makubalo and Bonginkosi Ndima who became one Million rand richer, after emerging as proud winners of the trophy.

Several local partners, including the national airline Air Seychelles, hotels, restaurant owners, private and government agencies, also supported the filming in return for coverage and credits. Air Seychelles also collaborated on a viewers prize at the end of the show for a holiday to the Seychelles, with accommodation sponsored by Savoy Resort and Spa.

Mrs. Hoareau who attended the filming of the show in Seychelles last year, has described the 12-week exposure of the islands on South African TV as something she has never seen before. She believes that this will undoubtedly contribute immensely towards raising the profile of the island destination on that market.

Ive never seen so much of Seychelles on international TV (from one project) like what I have enjoyed over the last three months with Tropika. It was stunning and without a doubt this will hugely complement our efforts in putting Seychelles out there, especially with the consumers, she added.

Mrs. Hoareau said that she has met a lot of people who have followed the show and have also been receiving a lot of queries at the tourist office.

People are excited and have been talking about the show and Seychelles a lot. We have also done our own social media campaign around the show, featuring snippets of the islands or running small competitions, to build a greater interest in the destination, she said.

South Africa is already Seychelles top market in Africa having sent 6,190 visitors to the island nation up to June 22nd this year, which represents an increase of 21 percent when compared to last year.

As the island nation continues to receive encouraging feedback from the market, other projects that will put the destination in the limelight are already emerging.

Im happy to say that weve had several other proposals for filming in the Seychelles in the next six months which will put Seychelles back on South African TV, notably on DSTV and the SABC channels, said Mrs. Hoareau.

Meanwhile, the 12 episodes of the Tropika Island of Treasure season 7 can be viewed on Tropikas Facebook page or on You Tube.

Aiming for greater visibility in South Korea, Seychelles emphasizes affordable holiday options at HanaTour 2017 – eTurboNews

Seychelles the heaven you must visit before you die was the slogan used to attract visitors to the island destinations stand at the HanaTour International Travel Show 2017 in South Korea. The four-day event was held at the Kintex Exhibition center in Goyang city from the 8th to 11th June.

The opening day, dubbed a Family Day, was reserved for travel trade partners and members of the press, allowing them to visit the stands and conduct meetings with representatives of various travel destinations.

The three-day international show that followed provided the general public with the opportunity to discover the exhibits. Interested travelers could also book travel packages, while availing of special offers.

Seychelles delegation at the 11th HanaTour International Travel show comprised of the Director of Digital Marketing, Mr. Vahid Jacob and Senior Marketing Executive Mrs. Amia Jovanovic-Desir from the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) Head Office, as well as representatives of the STB Office in South Korea, headed by Ms. Julie Kim.

The Seychelles stand proved to be quite an attraction, as the delegation had found innovative and tangible ways to showcase the products on offer to the Korean visitors. In addition to photos and videos showcasing the heavenly beauty of the island destination, visitors were invited to take a sip of the delicious Vanilla tea made in Seychelles and hold the legendary coco-de-mer the largest nut in the world, also endemic to the Indian Ocean archipelago.

Additionally, visitors could partake in a social media event by taking photos at the stand, with the possibility of featuring among 20 lucky winners of a Bluetooth speaker.

Seychelles is highly reputed in the Korean market as an upper-end honeymoon destination, but we are now trying to expand the market to include affordable family holiday, niche, and incentive group travels while maintaining the luxury image. The Seychelles stand and the promotional activities were designed to appeal to this aspect, said Ms. Kim.

To emphasize the fact that Seychelles caters for the needs and taste of travelers from all market segments from celebrity extravagant to budget-friendly visitors to the Seychelles stand were reassured that the island destination also has affordable accommodation options from small guesthouses to self-catering establishments.

As interest in the destination mounted, the Seychelles delegation was also faced with numerous and frequently asked questions including where is Seychelles located? How do we get there? And why should we choose Seychelles for our holidays? This confirmed the strong need for continuous education and training of agents in key cities, so that they understand what makes Seychelles totally different from other competitive island destinations.

Focusing more on targeted promotional activities, in collaboration with solid based companies are areas that we need to strongly consider in the future, with the aim of generating promising growth and potential visitor numbers in the medium term, said Mrs. Jovanovic-Desir.

The Senior Marketing Executive believes that building a close working relationship with key partners that are pushing for twin destinations would also be a plus for Seychelles as it targets more visitors from South Korea, where they can enjoy a holiday safari combined with a dream holiday experience, surrounded by a clean and untouched environment setting.

The fact that there are adequate airlines serving the Seychelles route, presenting travelers with a wider option, it only remains for the destination to be continuously positioned as a must-visit holiday location in the minds of potential Korean travelers.

Seychelles could benefit from a good share of the market segment that our close competitors are extracting. From their facial expressions while visiting our stand it could be confirmed that the South Koreans want to explore the beauty of our magical islands. This could be achieved by increasing our visibility in key cities and tapping into the right consumer base and appropriate market segments, said Mrs. Jovanovic-Desir.

The Seychelles stand caught the attention of numerous Korean Media such as JoongAng Ilbo, MK News and The Korea Travel News among others at the HanaTour International Travel Show. Many Koreans from honeymooners to retirees also showed interest in visiting the island nation and even made reservations on the spot.

The Seychelles Tourism Boards Director of Digital Marketing, Mr. Vahid Jacob who was visiting South Korea for the first time, said he sees great potential in the South Korean market.

With a large affluent population and more than 90% of the population online, I strongly believe that we should invest more in digital marketing in this market and greatly increase visibility of the destination online. To that effect we are planning on launching several major influencer campaigns and online competitions on the market this year, said Mr. Jacob.

Hana Tour is one of the largest travel agency in South Korea and annually holds the HanaTour International Travel show, also known as HITS, at the Kintex Exhibition center in Goyang city.

This year the travel show saw the participation of almost 1,000 stands showcasing some 760 different travel destinations and companies from across the globe. The event also attracted some 100,000 visitors which was 5 percent above last years figures.

Touchdown! Seychelles Tourism creates awareness at Durban rugby event

Every opportunity that helps Seychelles to be in the limelight counts!

That is exactly what a team from Alphonse Island, the Seychelles Tourism Board and Air Seychelles showcased in Durban, South Africa, last week.

A big rugby test match between South Africa and France provided the perfect opportunity for them to bring some warm Seychellois cheer to the game, while networking and promoting the island destinations tourism products.

Several tour operators and travel agents already selling Seychelles, as well as friends of Alphonse Island and past guests of the island were invited to the event.

The guests met at the hospitality suite before the test match where the well-represented Alphonse Island team were all hands on deck to promote their products. The Tourist office provided destination knowledge while Air Seychelles, which started flying to Durban in March this year, assisted with all the flight queries.

Guests were entertained for two hours before the big game with drinks and snacks being served, adding to the jovial atmosphere that helped beat the winter blues as the beautiful sun set and temperature dropped in the city.

The guests were then invited to join the three host partners in the comfort of the VIP suite to watch the game, which was won by the South African national rugby team the Springboks followed by dinner which brought down the curtains on this beautiful event.

The General Manager of Alphonse Island Resort, Gordon Rankin, ensured that everyone present were acquainted with the extraordinary and unique experiences that the island has to offer.

Alphonse Island one of the outlying islands of the Seychelles archipelago lies seven degrees south of the equator and 400 kilometers south-west of the main inhabited island of Mah. Only a 60-minute flight away from the main island Mah, the Alphonse atoll boasts kilometers of pristine tropical shorelines, lagoons and sea flats.

Guests to the island, from honeymooners to families, can indulge a wide range of activities from game fishing, fly fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving among others. For those not too keen on hitting the water, the natural environment also provides wonderful experiences, where one can have an encounter with some giant Aldabra tortoises.

I am extremely happy with the event because it brought many people together, to learn more on and also to share their experiences of Alphonse Island. We managed to create some big vibes here and get more people interested in the product and in Seychelles. I believe everyones expectations were exceeded today, said Mr. Rankin.

The Seychelles Tourism Board office in South Africa was represented at the event by its Director, Mrs. Lena Hoareau, who was equally pleased with the outcome of the networking event.

The atmosphere was wonderful and people were able to learn more about the Seychelles without being in a formal setting or function. Such events should be encouraged because the interest is already there. We just need to reach the right people and bring them together around a common event, said Mrs. Hoareau.

I am happy that we have partnered with Alphonse Island on this event and I wouldnt hesitate to do it again should the occasion present itself because I feel that we achieved what we set out to do. The guests were happy and certainly went back home more knowledgeable about Seychelles and Alphonse Island, she added.

South Africa is Seychelles main tourism market on the African Continent. Figures from the Seychelles National Bureau of Statistics show that South Africa has sent 6,017 tourists to the island nation up to June 11 of this year, which represents an increase of 22 percent when compared to last year.

Air Seychelles launched twice-weekly flights to Durban in March of this year. This is the national airlines second destination in South Africa, bringing the total number of non-stop flights between the two countries to seven per week. Air Seychelles also operates five weekly flights to Johannesburg.

Better connections with North America’s travel trade expected as Seychelles Tourism Board joins USTOA – eTurboNews

The Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) has been accepted as a member of the United States Tour Operator Association, USTOA.

Through this membership, the Seychelles tourism marketing body seeks to establish strategic relationships with key organizations within the travel trade community in North America.

USTOA was created in 1972 by a small group of California tour operators, with the aim of having a unified voice to protect the traveling public, as well as to represent the interests of tour operators.

Today, the New York based organization brings together some of the top names in travel and tourism. It also accounts for a large share of the tour operator market in North America.

The membership will hence allow the Seychelles Tourism Board to connect with these industry leaders that represent top destinations and suppliers from around the world.

The STB Director for Africa & the Americas David Germain who spearheaded the initiative to have the membership application processed and approved, said benefits to Seychelles include participation in all events organized by USTOA throughout the year.

Through publications, meetings, conferences, discussions and exhibitions, the STB will be able to stay up to date on the latest travel industry research, gain market intelligence and travel trends in North America, said Mr. Germain.

One of USTOAs main event is the Annual Conference & Marketplace which brings together leading North American travel companies with tourism suppliers and destinations from around the globe in an intimate and exclusive setting. The event is set for November 27 to December 1, 2017.

The Seychelles Tourism Board is intensifying its effort in North America as demand for long-haul travel and flights to the Seychelles continue to increase. The aim is to position the island destination as a destination of choice among the North American travelers.

To date, the National Bureau of Statistics has recorded a 67 percent increase in visitors arrival from America to Seychelles, compared to the same period last year.

The Seychelles Tourism Board is also a member of the Association for the Promotion of Tourism to Africa, APTA, which also facilitates partnerships and education of members throughout North America.

Seychelles sees 2017 GDP growth at 4.1 pct – finance minister – Times of India

NAIROBI, June 21 (Reuters) - Seychelles' economy is seen growing at 4.1 percent this year from 4.5 percent in 2016, its finance minister said, while the International Monetary Fund said performance of its tourism sector remained vulnerable to external factors.

The Indian Ocean country of 93,000 people largely depends on tourism for government revenues but has sought to promote itself as a low-tax, financial services hub.

"For 2017 the growth prospects remain favourable...as tourist arrivals continue to rise at a sustained pace, while inflation should remain subdued, on account of the stability of fuel and other commodity prices," Finance Minister Peter Larose said in a letter to the IMF released on Tuesday.

Seychelles' inflation rose to 3.18 percent year-on-year in May from -0.78 percent a month earlier.

IMF said in a separate statement that Seychelles' economy was still vulnerable to external factors that could affect its tourism sector.

"The outlook for tourist arrivals remains highly susceptible to external developments, such as weak growth in advanced and emerging market economies, weakness in the Euro, and geopolitical tensions disrupting the Middle East, Africa, and Europe," it said. Commenting on this years exhibition, Mr. Germain said he was impressed with the amount of participants and quality of business which took place at the Seychelles stand.

There is always a need for greater awareness on Seychelles in Africa, and this is one of the reasons why the Seychelles Tourism Board continues to attend the INDABA Exhibition. People want to know more, and we have to be present at key events in Africa to ensure that our presence is felt, he added.

Mr. Germain said he was particularly pleased with this years exhibition, because he felt that the trade in general showed a lot of interest in Seychelles as a destination of choice for their clients, adding that Seychelles is doing extremely well, and actually better than expected as the arrival figures continue to increase, compared to last year.

Seychelles Attractions – What to See in Seychelles

With very few exceptions, all visitors to the Seychelles will pass through Mah, even if only to land and take off at the international airport. Victoria, the charmingly low-key capital, is the starting point for most excursions, and a destination in itself.

Apart from numerous idyllic beaches, Mah's numerous attractions include many sites of historic interest, some stunning viewpoints, and studios belonging to sculptors and painters who have fallen for the Seychelles's charms, and settled down here to let their art imitate the life around them. Hikers and bikers can roam free on the island's trails, and the roads are easily navigable by car; it's very hard to get lost.

Most of Victoria's shops and main facilities are set around the distinctive clock tower (Lorloz, in Creole) which was built in 1903 to commemorate the Seychelles becoming a crown colony in its own right, separate from Mauritius. A replica of Little Ben, which marks the entrance to London's Victoria Station, it initially stood on the waterfront but, thanks to extensive land reclamation, is now some way inland.

Another colonial memento, the Sir Percy Selwyn Clarke Market, named for a popular post-war governor, is a daily hotchpotch of fresh food and flowers, and an excellent spot to pick up some souvenir spices.

Victoria's two imposing cathedrals act as a reminder of its Anglo-French heritage. Construction on the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, on Olivier Maradan Street, started in 1851, and it was renovated in 1995 when the Seychellois sculptor, Egbert Marday, fashioned the tabernacle and the carved doors. The Anglican cathedral, St Pauls, on Revolution Avenue, was originally consecrated in 1859, but completely rebuilt in 2004.

Seychelles | Hetalia Archives | Fandom powered by Wikia

Seychelles (, Ssheru) is a character in the series Hetalia: Axis Powers.

A 'chibi' version of Seychelles. Shown in Hidekaz Himaruya's blog.

Seychelles has long dark hair, tied into two pigtails with red ribbons. She wears a short blue dress with puffed sleeves and is often shown holding a fish.

Her skin tone varies from light tan to brown depending on the image, though she is also depicted with very light skin. In some artwork, her dress has a flower print.

In Gakuen Hetalia, she wears a white sweater and red plaid skirt as part of her school uniform.

She usually has brown eyes, though when she appeared in a cameo in the fifth Noto-sama game, her eyes were blue.

Seychelles is described as a country girl with a big heart who can sometimes be sloppy. She can't cook on her own and laments over her high cost of living. Her language is a unique type of French (Seychellois Creole), mixing both French and English.

She has made two appearances in Hetalia: World Series and in Hetalia: The Beautiful World. In We're Shipwrecked Too! she is talking about eating fish with France as he decides to go on an "aimless trip to a southern island." In United States of Hetalia 2, it is revealed that the island where both the Allies and Axis have been repeatedly seen/trapped is in fact the island of Seychelles herself.

She also makes a cameo in Comic Diary 9, where she rants about people not even knowing of her existence (after overhearing the other characters mention their countries' stereotypes and reputations).

She made her first apperance in the anime in Episode 100 of the World Series.

In her Gakuen appearance, she seems to be a tsundere-type character and is conflicted about her feelings for both France and England.

In Hetalia: The Beautiful World, she makes a cameo in Episode 101 and has a major role in Episode 116.

During their first meeting in the Gakuen Hetalia universe, England snaps a dog collar onto Seychelles and claims her to be his colony. He uses her like a servant in the game, though, occasionally, they are able to get along. In one of Seychelles' appearances in the comic, she shows anger toward England.

In the Gakuen Hetalia universe, it is revealed (via flashback) that he helped raise her as a child. However, in the present he attempts to undress and grope her, much to her embarrassment; he is apparently desperate to see what her body has become.

Their relationship in the mainstream Hetalia universe has not been mentioned, outside of France appearing with her in Shipwrecked and an illustration in Christmas Rampage 2007 that shows him groping Seychelles.

Air Seychelles announces codeshare service to Beijing – eTurboNews

Air Seychelles has announced that it will now offer connections to China through the expansion of its codeshare agreement with Etihad Airways.

At the onset of the announcement, the Seychelles Tourism Board is hoping the agreement will ease the travelling experience of Chinese tourists choosing to holiday in Seychelles.

Air Seychelles HM code will be added to Etihad Airways daily service between Abu Dhabi and Chinas capital, Beijing.

The codeshare agreement which takes effect on 14th June, 2017, will offer a one-stop connection between Seychelles and Beijing, via Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi is linked to Seychelles through twice-daily flights with Air Seychelles and partner airline Etihad Airways.

Making the announcement, the national airlines Chief Executive Roy Kinnear said: Our new codeshare route with Etihad Airways provides guests with convenient travel options to Beijing and reinforces the strong political and economic relations between Seychelles and China.

Kinnear added that Air Seychelles is working hand-in-hand with its tourism partners to help grow the number of travelers from China.

For instance, this codeshare will support the Seychelles Tourism Boards recent roadshow in China by providing travel agents with new booking options to Seychelles.

The Seychelles Tourism Board has been intensifying its marketing efforts on the Chinese market following the launch of the destinations 2017 strategy for the Asian nation in May this year.

Emphasis is being placed on the more savvy travelers, with a particular focus on visitors from the first-tier cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Shenzhen.

Air Seychelles recently discontinued a weekly scheduled charter flight service between Beijing and the island nations main island of Mah, which started in January 2016. Commenting on the new codeshare deal, the Chief Executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board Mrs. Sherin Francis said this will hopefully make it easier and seamless for Chinese visitors travelling to Seychelles.

This is very crucial, nowadays visitors want the most smooth, easiest and seamless travel experience when going on holiday. Its a decisive factor and anything actually that can make travel easier for our visitors to Seychelles is most welcome, said Mrs Francis.

According to visitors arrival figures published by the National Bureau of Statistics, a total of 6,133 Chinese tourists have come to Seychelles up to 11th June this year. This represents a 17 percent decrease when compared to the same period last year.

The STB Chief Executive noted that if the flight and transit time is right, combined with competitive air fares, the new codeshare agreement between Air Seychelles and Etihad Airways should help to consolidate the market.

In addition to this we also happy that Air Seychelles is negotiating with a Chinese company and hopefully we can get a few direct charters for the rest of the year that will also help to consolidate the Chinese market, Mrs Francis added.

The latest codeshare agreement with Etihad Airways offering a one-stop connection to China is the national carriers fourth codeshare connection with its partner airline from the United Arab Emirates in East Asia, after Hong Kong, Seoul in South Korea, and Tokyo and Nagoya in Japan.

Airline and hotel partners joined the Seychelles Tourism Board to promote Seychelles and selected products across the cities of Ghent, Rotterdam and Luxemburg. The three cities were strategically chosen by the Seychelles Tourism Board office in France.

Seychelles concludes 3rd edition of Eastern Europe Roadshow, providing added boost to growing market – eTurboNews

The Seychelles islands captivated the attention of travel agents across four main Central European capitals, as the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) and trade partners hosted another successful edition of the Seychelles Eastern Europe Roadshow. The 3rd edition of the annual event was held from May 22-25, in Warsaw, Prague, Bratislava, and Budapest.

Through their train and dine setup, the Seychelles Tourism Board and local trade partners held networking sessions with the travel agents, which proved to be an effective way of grabbing their attention in a more friendly and relaxed atmosphere. For the main presentations that followed the tte--tte, around 60 agents embarked on the journey, which provided them with an overview of the Seychelles unique selling points, the diversity of what the destination has to offer, and the various products.

To conclude the roadshow, the Seychelles Tourism Board and partners joined together to present a prize to one lucky winner who was offered an 8-night stay in Seychelles, hence the opportunity to fully experience the island destination.

The Seychelles delegation at the 2017 Eastern Europe Roadshow was headed by the Seychelles Tourism Board Manager for Scandinavia, CIS & Eastern Europe, Karen Confait, accompanied by Marketing Executive Elsie Sinon, as well as representatives of hotels, Destination Management Companies, and airlines. The local trade partners consisted of Constance Hotels & Resorts: Dominika Janta, Kempinski Seychelles Resort: Marko Dobrus, Hilton Seychelles: Katerina Konarikova, Savoy Resort Seychelles & Coral Strand Hotel: Valeria Gavrikova, Masons Travel: Gerhard Bartsch, Le Duc de Praslin, Valmer Resort & La Digue Island Lodge: Derek Savy and Emirates: Zsolt Nemeth, Michaela Lechnov, Agata Rasala and Raphael Grugl.

The Seychelles Eastern Europe roadshow has become a highlight of promotional efforts on the market, generating more and more interest each year. Ms. Confait said this years event was a great success, having received positive feedback from both the travel trade and local partners.

The interest on the market has grown considerably since we started 4 years ago. This is clearly visible in the arrival figures with Poland and Czech Republic dominating the market. For this year, a 61% increase has been recorded so far on these 4 markets collectively compared to same period last year, said Confait.

Dedicated Seychelles events such as the Eastern Europe Roadshow, aimed at bringing the island nation and its products directly to the doorstep of the travel agents and boosting their confidence to sell the destination, also helps to put Seychelles in the forefront through the unified collaboration of all trade partners. Ms. Confait said the event also allows the Seychelles Tourism Board to build closer relationships with both the trade and local partners, which provides an advantage when growing and maintaining the market.

It is to be noted that our constant presence is recognized and appreciated by the travel trade especially in smaller cities like Bratislava, she added.

In additional to promotional efforts, theres also been significant increase in air access which is helping to make the destination more accessible to potential travelers. While Emirates has been a faithful partner over the years, more flight options are now available following the resumption of daily flights by Qatar Airways in December last year and introduction of thrice weekly flights to the island nation by Turkish Airlines, in October 2016.

With the increasing potential in this region and demand from both the Seychelles partners and travel trade, we look forward to working and growing this market further, while planning other activities for later this year, said Confait.
