Heyward debuts in Cardinals red with first-pitch single

Jason Heyward speaks with Matt Yallof from Cardinals' Spring Training to discuss his transition to St. Louis

JUPITER, Fla. -- Though he still sits one month away from the introduction he's most anticipating, Jason Heyward made his debut in Cardinals red on Thursday while making his first start in right field for the team that acquired him in November.

Heyward wasted no time endearing himself to the red-clad fans at Roger Dean Stadium, either, as he singled on the first pitch he saw from Marlins starter Dan Haren. His single was the first of three consecutive hits that produced a pair of first-inning runs for the Cardinals.

"It's good to play baseball," Heyward said after going 1-for-2 while playing three innings. "[It's a] fresh start in so many ways this year."

After seven springs in Atlanta's big league camp, Heyward has assimilated seamlessly into his new surroundings. He has spoken numerous times about his excitement to be one piece in a potentially potent St. Louis lineup, where he filled the second hole on Thursday. While manager Mike Matheny hasn't committed to that being Heyward's regular-season spot, there appears to be a strong chance he will end up there. He started more games from the No. 2 place in Atlanta's lineup than anywhere else in the Braves' order.

As for wearing a new uniform for the first time in his career, Heyward said, "I don't know if it will ever feel different."

Perhaps playing against his former team will, though Heyward will have some time to prepare for that. He confirmed on Thursday that he will not be on the Cardinals' travel squad when the team heads to Orlando, Fla., to face the Braves next week.

Hamilton hot favorite for triple triumph

Mercedes Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain talks to journalists during pre-season testing at the Jerez racetrack in southern Spain February 4, 2015. Photo by Marcelo del Pozo, Reuters.

LONDON - Lewis Hamilton starts the Formula One season as red-hot favorite to become a triple world champion but Niki Lauda, who knows how that feels, fears the battle could be tougher than ever.

The Briton won 11 races to Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg's five last year, with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo taking the other three, and heads for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 15 with every reason to be confident.

The 'Silver Arrows' have been ominous in testing, lapping with metronomic efficiency and eye-openingly faster than anyone else once they finally got around to bolting on the quicker soft tyres.

"Expectations are enormously high because we won everything that we could win last year," triple champion Lauda, now non-executive chairman of the Mercedes works team, told Reuters in an interview.

"The logic is that everybody expects and wants to have the same thing (again) but I can tell you it is not that easy. A new season is a new season and everything starts from scratch.

"I think Lewis and Nico will fight again like always for the championship but my worry is there will be a third guy also getting involved, no question."

Who that man turns out to be remains an open question, although Finland's Valtteri Bottas may be a shrewd bet after Williams looked closest to Mercedes in testing.

The ever-smiling Ricciardo, now Red Bull's team leader following the departure of four times champion Sebastian Vettel to Ferrari, looks another solid candidate to take the fight to Mercedes.

"At the moment I would say that Williams is the closest, Red Bull and Ferrari I cannot tell you now because they had some signs of speed and then nothing happens again. Red Bull you can never under-estimate," said Lauda.

County facing $2.5 million in red ink

MONTESANO How thin can a departments budget get before the department ceases to exist? That was the sentiment of Grays Harbor County department heads at the countys budget meeting on Feb. 25.

All three commissioners attended the special meeting, as did elected and appointed department heads working toward easing the countys deficit.

I dont know that any of us here are providing services beyond what we are mandated by statute to do, county Treasurer Ron Strabbing said. Youve got to protect the core services that people expect from county government.

Strabbing suggested reviewing programs that are not mandated as a way to save funds, including the Washington State University Extension Office.

Its a couple hundred thousand dollars a year that is discretionary at the commissioners option, he said. The other stuff thats fluff is nice, but if you cant afford it, you cant afford it. If were driving a Ford, weve got to be using a Ford budget and not a Cadillac budget.

Commission Chairman Wes Cormier began the workshop with a spreadsheet outlining his suggested cuts. The current expected deficit for 2015 is $2.5 million, and Cormiers suggested cuts would reduce that by about $621,000, leaving a hole of more than $1.8 million dollars. The department heads were asked to get the reduction up to at least $700,000. And while it may seem like a minimal respite, Cormier says the $700,000 reduction in the deficit would allow the county to meet an important budget benchmark by keeping the reserve fund at the county-mandated 16 percent.

Cormiers cuts include more than $193,000 in the prosecutors office through the reduction of non-allocated funds and attrition, and more than $146,000 from the Sheriffs Department budget. Planning and building would be cut $56,000 through attrition by not filling a position that will become vacant in April, and the juvenile facility could save $55,000 through attrition of a secretary position, Cormiers spreadsheet noted. Cormier also suggested cutting $40,000 from the Assessors Office by encouraging an early retirement with added benefits.

A suggested 5 percent cut of county funds to Public Health and Social Services, saving $25,000, was not completely rejected by the departments Director Joan Brewster, but she did say that cuts have already hit the department hard in the past.

We are constantly in the game of looking for money to address social and health issues in the community, and its pretty hard to get a step ahead when every time we bring in a dollar, we are losing more dollars, Brewster said. Between 2008 and 2012, weve lost 47 percent of our county contribution. Were trying to keep our nose just above the water line.

Brewster also cautioned commissioners that the cut could diminish outside grant funding in the future.

Raiders fall in Red Deer before must-win in Edmonton

The road from Red Deer and Edmonton is a short one the Prince Albert Raiders will travel this weekend. But after the Raiders loss in Red Deer Friday, the road to overtaking Edmonton for a playoff spot just got a whole lot longer.

Goaltender Nick McBride of the Prince Albert Raiders makes a second period save against Red Deer Rebels forward Grayson Pawlenchuk during Friday night WHL action at the Enmax Centrium in Red Deer. Photo credit: Ashli Barrett/Red Deer Advocate

A poor second period doomed P.A. on Friday night in Red Deer, with the Rebels scoring three goals in the middle frame on their way to a 5-3 win.

With the loss, the Raiders remain 11 points behind the Edmonton Oil Kings for the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. P.A. heads to Edmonton for an afternoon affair on Sunday before inviting the Oil Kings to town for a Tuesday tilt.

Weve just got to win those, theres no doubt, said Raiders coach Marc Habscheid after Fridays loss. Weve got to play with desperation because were running out of games.

That desperation showed for the Raiders in the third period against Red Deer, when they held the Rebels without a shot for 13 minutes and cut the lead to one on a power play howitzer from Jesse Lees.

But the desperation needed to come a period earlier.

After Brooks Maxwell and Mackenze Stewart traded first period goals, the Rebels used two early power plays in the second to take a 3-1 lead.

Nine seconds after Jordan Tkatch took a holding the stick penalty, Scott Feser scored to make it 2-1. Reid Gardiner was called for goalie interference 25 seconds later, and Josh Mahuras power play point shot found a way in past a screened Nick McBride to make it 3-1 Red Deer.

Maxwell added another at the 12:18 mark before Red Deer product and recent call-up Luke Coleman pulled one back for the Raiders at 13:50.

Nyong'o stolen pearl gown recovered by police

LOS ANGELES - A $150,000 ($205,000) pearl-encrusted dress stolen from the hotel room of Kenyan star Lupita Nyong'o was found Friday, Los Angeles police said.

The custom-made gown, encrusted with some 6,000 pearls, went missing from the Oscar-winning star's hotel room after she turned heads in it Sunday on the Academy Awards red carpet.

"A dress that greatly resembles the dress that was stolen" was recovered, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Nicole Nishida, told AFP.

The elaborate Calvin Klein pearl dress designed by Francisco Costa was reported missing from the London West Hollywood hotel just off Sunset Boulevard late Wednesday.

Nyong'o won a best supporting actress Oscar last year for her performance in the drama "12 Years A Slave." The Kenyan-born actress has wowed fashion critics with her bold sartorial choices since her breakout performance.

Code Red used to remind residents to remove vehicles from streets

SPEARFISH The Code Red system, a reverse notification system that can call or send message alerts regarding emergency or community information, was used to remind residents citywide Wednesday evening to move any vehicles parked on the streets in preparation of snow removal early the next morning. This was the first time the system was used for this purpose.

Our goal was to just remind people, Spearfish Police Chief Pat Rotert said, describing that since the system was implemented last year, the priority is for the system to be used in emergency situations, such as evacuation notices or missing child alerts, but secondarily, it can be a helpful informational tool. He gave the example that a couple of weeks ago, the system was used to alert residents within a two-block radius around Ames Street that there would be a water shutoff for a short period of time.

The street department approached Rotert about the possibility of using the system when the city knows a large snow event is coming, to help remind people to clear the streets to ease with snow removal efforts.

Yesterday was just a great example, Rotert said of Wednesdays use of Code Red. Snow had already fallen, with additional snow forecasted, and the street department had plans to get out at 4 a.m. the next day to begin snowplowing.

Beau Riopel, streets superintendent, said that the alert seemed to make a difference: We did get responses from people that they appreciated the heads-up.

Rotert added that the police department has been heavily enforcing snow removal parking policies; vehicles parked on priority routes during snow removal will be ticketed a $15 fine and theyre seeing fewer vehicles parked on the road during snow events because of the enforcement. He said that the department isnt trying to be punitive, but rather, to gain compliance to clear the streets of parked vehicles to assist the plow operators to be able to do their jobs quickly and efficiently.

Riopel explained that the city snowplows are 12-feet wide. Having vehicles parked on streets narrows the space available to the plow, which can create safety issues when trying to maneuver around those hazards on the roadway. Parked vehicles also make it impossible to get the snow completely off the street the ways the plows need to get gutters cleared off for future snowmelt, Riopel said.

We do the best we can with it, but a lot of the times you cant do a good, quality job because you cant get them (vehicles) all the way off (the street) and get it cleaned out, Riopel said.

When the Code Red system was implemented, much of Spearfishs city-defined database was automatically imported, so landlines that were in existence were likely automatically added to the system and will receive phone calls with an automatic message. People can also sign up through cityofspearfish.com, by clicking on the Code Red button and filling out the registration, should they wish to add additional numbers to receive alerts: for example, college students renting residences can add their cell phone numbers and locations to receive alerts, or landlords who may own a property but not live at that address who want to know about location-specific alerts about the area. Rotert added that there is an app for smartphones that allows location services to activate for wherever one happens to be; for example, if he has the app on when he is traveling through another state that utilizes the alert system, he could receive any location-specific notifications, even though he does not live in or have an address in that area.

Rotert said that the city may continue to use Code Red for some general notifications but not to the point where it loses its effectiveness, since the main priority for its use is the emergency notifications.

Red-hot White gives Hawks added dimension

The Iowa basketball team already was on a roll. The Hawkeyes already were a tough team to prepare for, a team comprised mostly of juniors and seniors seemingly starting to play with more consistency as the end of the regular season approached.

And now Aaron White is throwing in 3-point field goals.

Upcoming opponents have to be scratching their heads and wondering What do we do now?"

Hes just shooting it with confidence," Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said of White as he prepared his team for a 5:05 p.m. road test today at Penn State. If he keeps doing that, it changes everything in terms of how people need to guard us."

White fired in a career-best 29 points in a victory over Illinois on Wednesday night and mingled in with the usual assortment of dunks, free throws and headlong drives to the hoop were three 3-pointers. He also had two threes in the previous game against Nebraska and went 5 for 6 from long range in those two games.

White insists he has always had confidence in his 3-point shooting and McCaffery said his 6-foot-9 senior forward always has had the green light. But the fact remains that he was just 9 for 39 (23.1 percent) in the first 26 games of the season and 49-197 (24.9) in his career until this past week.

Its kind of frustrating that at the end of my career theyre finally going in," White said. Im sure the fans are like Where did this come from? Shoot, I made two (Wednesday night) and the Illinois coach is still yelling He cant shoot. I thought OK, Ill pull another one."

White, like McCaffery, figures that if he can continue do this, its going to radically alter the way upcoming opponents defend the Hawkeyes.

Its way easier to play when my shot is falling," said White, who moved up to No. 4 on Iowas career scoring list Wednesday. It opens up my drive and I can make plays for others. Its not easy to drive when they know Im driving."

The Hawkeyes (18-10 overall, 9-6 Big Ten) have won five of their past seven games but they also face a fairly formidable defensive task today.

Red-Light Camera Ban Passes 1st Test In Colorado

DENVER (AP) A ban on red-light cameras and speed-van enforcement passed its first test Wednesday in the Colorado Legislature.

But a long afternoon of testimony showed the topic is as divisive as ever. In Colorado, 12 cities use the traffic-enforcement cameras.

State lawmakers have been debating red-light cameras for years, and the question pits lawmakers against police agencies that insist the cameras improve public safety.

(credit: CBS)

What are we targeting here, public safety or another revenue source? asked Rep. Dan Coram, R-Montrose.

The question came after hours of testimony from police and pedestrian advocates asking lawmakers not to ban the cameras.

You cant tell us to do something and then take away the tools to do it, said Greenwood Village Police Cmdr. Dustin Varney.

The cameras have been in question in the wake of recent audits questioning the value of red-light cameras. A 2011 Denver audit found the cameras of use mostly to raise tax money for the city.

Public officials have chafed at the suggestion that the cameras are just there to make money. Public dislike of the cameras doesnt make them wrong, said Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey.

Shoplifters dont like being caught either, but were not banning cameras in 7-Elevens, Morrissey said.

Zendaya Totally Schools E! Host After Racist Comment

“There is already harsh criticism of African American hair in society without the help of ignorant people who choose to judge others based on the curl of their hair.”

On Sunday night, actress Zendaya turned heads with her waist-length faux locs on the red carpet. It was a dramatically different look for the actress she had a pixie cut earlier that week and, since the red-carpet dreadlock is rare, a banner moment for natural hair styles. Plus, she looked gorgeous. So its surprising that she had to defend her choice on Twitter.

Last night, during E!s Fashion Police Oscars edition show, host Giuliana Rancic commented on Zendayas red-carpet hairdo, saying that her dreadlocks made Zendaya look like she smelled of patchouli oil and weed." Naturally, and rightfully, Twitter erupted in anger, calling Rancic's joke racist, xenophobic, distasteful, and ignorant (and citing Rancics previous praise of Kylie Jenner for rocking dreadlocks as hypocrisy).

Eventually the situation elicited a long, eloquent response from Zendaya herself. Read below:

Rancic has already apologized via Twitter, insisting that she hadnt intended her comment to be racist; it was just, you know, accidentally racist:

And yes, Rancics joke probably was unthinking, but its still embarrassing that an 18-year-old has to remind a grown woman and television host why recycling tired stereotypes in this situation discussing a black womans natural hairstyle would be offensive.

Red Sox icon David Ortiz 'a full go' for camp

FORT MYERS, Fla. David Ortiz arrived here on Tuesday as scheduled, not there was ever any doubt about that. He has never been Manny Ramirez, seeing how much he could get away with just for the fun of it. He has never been Roger Clemens, seeing how long the Red Sox could look at his vacant locker before making another unscheduled bank withdrawal.

Everybodys definition of what makes a player a Hall of Famer is different, but Ortiz fits almost every one of them, especially the intangible ones. At some point in his Red Sox career, perhaps after his incomparable offensive performance in the 2013 postseason, he crossed the invisible line to iconic.

As was seen on Tuesday, Ortiz no longer simply makes appearances. There are now Ortiz sightings, fans whispering, I think thats Big Papi to whoever is close by. As word got around the JetBlue Park fields that Ortiz was in the batting cages, a crowd gathered there just to catch a hurried glimpse of him.

When he moved from the cages to Field One, towel over his head, many in the crowd went with him keeping a respectful distance and when word got around that Ortiz would be taking swings in public, it was as if the Red Sox had posted a free clam rolls sign over that way, what with all the scurrying to get a closer look.

Ortiz didnt answer questions about how he feels with one of those, Im in the best shape of my career responses, since he didnt answer questions, period. His prefab press conference is scheduled for today.

John Farrell didnt exactly say that Ortiz was in the best shape of his career, but came close with, He looks like hes in great shape. Hes a full go.

Ortiz is the second-oldest player on the Red Sox roster at 39 and will not turn 40 until Nov. 18. That makes him about seven months younger than Koji Uehara, and it may also say something about the Sox that their best reliever and best hitter are the oldest players on the roster.

Ortiz was born two years after the American League adopted the designated hitter, and the time has passed where Edgar Martinez can be compared with Ortiz as the best ever, if only because his playoff performances dont match up.

Martinez was a solid DH until he retired in 2004 at age 41, batting .263 with 12 homers and 63 RBIs. A year earlier, Martinez batted .294 with 24 home runs and 98 RBIs.

Last year, Ortiz had his best season since 2006 with 35 home runs and 104 RBIs. He heads into this year with 466 career home runs and an identical performance would put him over 500.

For her pale pink lips Anna wore Ceramide Cream Blush from Elizabeth Arden to give her cheeks a soft peachy glow.

This was paired with Beautiful Color Eye Shadow in Smolder, also from Elizabeth Arden, to give a more intense look in contrast to her dress.

Mimic Annas look by using these products and keeping your eyes dark while your lips and skin remain neutral.

Oscars 2015: Fifty Shades star Dakota Johnson stuns in red gown with thigh-high split

ABC SPLASH

The brunette beauty looked stunning as she walked the red carpet with her famous parent at 87th Academy Awards, however the pair later had a spat on camera as they chatted to ABC's Lara Spencer.

The issue arose when the 25-year-old was asked if her 57-year-old companion had watched her racy new film, Fifty Shades Of Grey.

Melanie admitted: "I dont really want to. It would really be strange, to which Dakota retorted: I dont think so, I think you could, maybe, one day."

The Working Girl star stuck by her decision, adding: "Shes a really good actress, I dont need to see that to know how good she is." However a clearly irked Dakota snapped: "Alright! You don't have to see it. Jesus Christ."
