Red Bank’s BJ Ragland chooses Tulane from more than 30 Division I football offers – Chattanooga Times Free Press

Red Bank High School senior offensive lineman BJ Ragland has undoubtedly experienced waves of emotion regarding his football career over the past 24 hours.

If finding out his Lions would be able to host their season opener against longtime rival Soddy-Daisy on Aug. 21 as planned wasn't big enough, the defense-demolishing, 6-foot-2, 300-pound tackle announced his commitment to Tulane University on Wednesday afernoon.

Ragland chose the Football Bowl Subdivision's Green Wave, who compete in the American Athletic Conference, out of more than 30 scholarship offers from Division I schools. The New Orleans program's outstanding alumni include former NFL star running back Matt Forte, and the current roster includes former Notre Dame High School standout Patrick Johnson, a defensive end who is preparing for his senior season.

"To be able to announce my decision to Tulane is crazy," said Ragland, who has a 6-foot-6 wingspan and is considered extremely athletic for his size. "At first when I was getting recruited, I was leaning more towards smaller schools and FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) programs. I didn't think I would get offers as big as I did. To be in this position now is a blessing."

Ragland listed as a preseason TSSAA Class AAA all-state selection in Murphy Fair's preseason publication and ranked as a top-1o offensive lineman in Tennessee by GridironScouting.com said his final decision came down to Tulane and Central Florida, which won the AAC title in 2017 and 2018 and played for the championship last season.

Tulane, entering its fifth season under coach Willie Fritz and coming off back-to-back 7-6 campaigns after four straight losing records, will gain an offensive lineman with quickness, power and the ability to spring huge gains on the ground. Versatility is another asset: Ragland, who helped Red Bank average more than 180 yards each in rushing and passing per game last season, said he can play anywhere on the line.

He received his offer from Tulane on June 22 during a recruiting period made unique by the coronavirus pandemic. With college visits and camps nonexistent this summer, schools had to find new ways to impress prospects.

"I could feel the energy as soon as I joined my first Zoom meeting with Tulane," Ragland said. "The coaches loved me, and it felt like home. They gave me a great feel of what it would be like to be a part of the program, and they showed a lot of love. I talked to Patrick (Johnson), too, and I can't wait to be a part of what they have going in New Orleans, which is a great city."

With Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announcing Tuesday that high school football season can start without delay, Ragland is excited to try to push the Lions to more achievements. He is hungry to get back the Region 3-3A championship, which Red Bank won three straight seasons (2016-18) before finishing runner-up to Loudon last year.

However, the ultimate objective for third-year coach Chris Brown's team is to compete for a state championship, and the Lions have ample senior talent that includes Cameron Bell and Jadon High on the defensive line, running back and defensive back Lumiere Strickland, wide receiver and defensive back Kel Eddins, plus emerging star Reco Trimble, a junior running back and defensive back.

"We have a lot of guys who are going to turn heads," Ragland said. "We are happy to get a chance to play. I fell in love with the game of football my freshman year thanks to Coach Tim Daniels, who was my psychology teacher who used to be the head coach at Red Bank. Without his support and the love from my mom, I wouldn't be where I am today."

Tropical Storm Isaias Forecast To Become A Hurricane As It Heads Toward Florida – Red River Radio

Updated at 6:15 p.m. ET

Tropical Storm Isaias is forecast to pick up strength and become a hurricane as it approaches Florida on Saturday.

The National Hurricane Center said that as of 5 p.m. ET Thursday, the storm continues to slam the Dominican Republic with heavy rainfall and strong winds. It is about 155 miles west-northwest of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, and about 250 miles southeast of the southeastern Bahamas.

Isaias is heading northwest, with maximum sustained winds near 60 mph. To be deemed a hurricane, its sustained winds would need to reach at least 74 mph.

The storm's center is forecast to move near parts of the Bahamas late Thursday through Friday, and near South Florida on Saturday. The hurricane center said "strengthening is forecast during the next day or so," with Isaias predicted to become a hurricane on Friday or Friday night.

The agency said that so far a tropical storm watch has been issued for the east coast of Florida, from Ocean Reef northward to Sebastian Inlet.

It added that storm surge watches may be required along parts of the Florida peninsula on Thursday night or early Friday if the forecast track shifts closer to the coast.

The center's latest advisory warned of the risk of winds, heavy rainfall and storm surge this weekend along Florida's east coast and spreading northward along the U.S. East Coast through early next week.

"The details of the track and intensity forecast remain uncertain, and it is too soon to determine the magnitude and location of these potential impacts, but interests along the entire U.S. East Coast should monitor the progress of Isaias and updates to the forecast," it said.

In a briefing on Thursday afternoon, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said that while the storm remains off shore, it is "an evolving situation." He urged residents to make sure they had safety plans as well as seven days' worth of food, water and medicine.

The National Hurricane Center said that in parts of the central and northwest Bahamas "preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion."

Isaias has already drenched Puerto Rico, and will drop 4 to 8 inches of rain on the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, northern Haiti and Turks and Caicos, the National Weather Service said, with some areas receiving up to 12 inches. Cuba is also expected to get 1 to 2 inches of rain, with up to 4 in some areas.

The weather service said heavy rains may begin to affect eastern Florida over the weekend.

"This rain could result in isolated flash and urban flooding, especially in low-lying and poorly drained areas," it said.

Isaias is projecting tropical-storm-force winds outward for up to 310 miles a sign of rapid growth since Wednesday when it became the ninth named storm of the Atlantic season. The National Weather Service categorizes tropical storm winds as ranging from 39 mph to 73 mph (sustained) at surface level.

Concerns about the storm's impact on Florida prompted officials to suspend coronavirus testing at state facilities for several days, from Friday through at least Tuesday.

Californias higher education leaders see an opportunity in crisis – Red Bluff Daily News

Colleges, students and faculty members may be unsure of what lies ahead as they brace for another mostly virtual academic term amid a pandemic, but the crisis could force Californias higher education systems to improve.

The states colleges and universities could use the current crisis to build better partnerships across the University of California, California State University, California Community Colleges and private institutions to increase access and improve graduation rates. That was the message from Lande Ajose, a senior policy advisor for higher education to Gov. Gavin Newsom, and ECMC Foundation President Peter Taylor during a webinar Wednesday hosted by California Competes, a nonprofit focused on improving graduation outcomes. The organization releaseda new data dashboardthat found uneven educational opportunities across the state. For example, Bay Area residents are most likely to have a bachelors degree, at 52%, compared to 17% of residents in the San Joaquin Valley.

In the midst of a global pandemic, its hard to imagine what could exist on the other side of it, said Ajose. But at some point, whether it is 12 months or 36 months from now, we are going to recover from the twin crises of the pandemic and economic recession We need a unified, cohesive and coherent vision of what higher education should be and look like.

Ajose said the pandemic is teaching Californians that basic needs for students dont just include food and housing, but access to broadband internet and digital devices.

Whats become clear is that if you are a student in California and would like to go to school this fall and dont have digital access, then you do not have access to education, she said.

Newsoms administration, along with California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, has been working with internet service providers to continue offering low-cost plans to families that dont lead to significant price increases, Ajose said.

Theyre also focused on getting more tablets and computers into students hands and making people aware of the importance of broadband access.

Many families dont understand the need for broadband access, Ajose said. Well work with partners to push out the message that for telehealth, job searches, working from home, there are lots of reasons now where computer access and broad access is a basic need.

The urgent need to prepare for postsecondary digital instruction was underscored by aPublic Policy Institute of California briefissued Tuesday, which indicates that four out of five of Californias colleges and universities will open this fall operating primarily online or with a hybrid approach. That includes most of the states private colleges. Only a few are planning on mostly in-person instruction. That contrasts with what is happening nationally. At least for now, about half of the nations colleges are saying they will offer in-person instruction.

Besides improving access to technology and the internet, Ajose and Taylor, who serves as a CSU trustee, said forming a state higher education coordinating entity of college leaders would improve transfers and unify each college system in the state around shared goals of improving graduation rates and getting graduates into well-paying jobs.

The governors office and the legislature control funding, said Taylor who heads a foundation focused on improving postsecondary education outcomes. If all the college and university systems are in agreement on the goals, then they should be able to get together and pursue the funding under a joint strategy, he said.

Last year, Newsom launched theCouncil for Post-Secondary Education, an advisory board of education, business and labor leaders to discuss college access, success and financial issues. But the council doesnt have the power or resources of a statewide coordinating agency.

Ajose said creating that entity is still a priority for Newsom, but this years focus has been on building astatewide longitudinal data systemto track students through high school, college and into the workplace. California is one of a few states that doesnt have this type of system.

With more adult students turning to online education to add skills to help them get jobs despite the recession and the coronavirus, Ajose and Taylor said building quality online education should be a priority.

We need to do a better job focusing on the 27-year-old single parent, who is a part-time worker with childcare challenges, Taylor said. Our system isnt quite as adept at helping that student as we are the 18-year-old coming straight out of high school and going to college full-time.

One solution would be creating a better framework for awarding prior-learning credit, which would, for example, acknowledge the experience of someone who spent 10 years working on computers in the military, but then enrolls in a college Information Technology program to earn their degree, he said.

Given the economic dislocation were experiencing, we probably have many more people with experience interested in pursuing higher education than six months ago, Ajose said. Its incredibly timely to think about credit for prior learning.

Watch live: NASA’s most advanced rover heads to Mars – UPI News

ORLANDO, Fla., July 30 (UPI) -- NASA launched the most advanced Mars rover yet -- with technology and tools to find signs of life on the Red Planet -- on Thursday morning from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

The spacecraft that carries the Perseverance rover, which also is ferrying the first helicopter designed to fly on another planet, separated from its rocket just under an hour after the launch at 7:50 a.m. EDT.

The Atlas V rocket launched with "2.3 million pounds of thrust to take aim at Mars" and headed toward Mars at over 25,000 miles per hour, according to NASA and launch company United Launch Alliance.

NASA's rover now joins the United Arab Emirates' Hope orbiter and China's Tianwen-1 probe, which also includes a rover, on the trip to Mars this summer.

As with the other two missions, Thursday's launch begins a seven-month, 300-million mile journey that will end at Mars in February. NASA predicts a Feb. 18 landing on Mars.

The mission, like any trip to Mars, comes with a lot of risks, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a press conference in Florida on Wednesday.

NASA overcame workplace restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic to make a deadline for launching this summer while Mars was close to the Earth's orbit.

The biggest risk will take place when the spacecraft enters the Mars atmosphere robotically.

"It's without question, a challenge. I mean we, there's no other way to put it, and it's not easy. ... That being said, we know how to land on Mars. We've done it eight times already," Bridenstine said.

This year's mission to Mars builds on the past discoveries made by rovers such as Spirit, Opportunity and Curiosity, which led NASA to conclude that conditions once existed to support life there.

"Mars 2020 is without question the most advanced mission to Mars, including the two other missions headed there this year from China and the United Arab Emirates," said Raymond Arvidson, professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.

Arvidson has been involved in every Mars mission since Viking 1 landed on the Red Planet in 1976.

"The instruments on board are unmatched, and the planned return of Martian soil and rock samples is also historic," Arvidson said.

The mission's primary goal is to study rocks at or just below the surface for signs that life existed, or still exists, on Mars, and to understand its geology better.

The rover also will collect rock samples for return to Earth during a future mission, but NASA said that could take 10 years to accomplish.

NASA announced the Mars 2020 rover mission in 2012, at an estimated cost of $1.5 billion, but the budget has swelled to $2.46 billion. Work on components started in 2017, and construction of the rover started to stream over a live webcam in June 2019.

The Atlas rocket carrying the rover had four solid-rocket strap-on boosters in addition to the main, first-stage booster. That is the same configuration used to launch NASA's Curiosity rover to Mars in 2011.

Mars 2020 and the Perseverance rover are scheduled to land at the large Jezero Crater amid that planet's Northern Lowlands. Scientists believe that once was home to a river delta.

The rover will select targets for rock samples, drive and operate for at least one Mars year, which is about two Earth years.

Besides its science and imaging instruments, the Perseverance rover also carries the Ingenuity helicopter strapped to its underside. The aircraft is powered by lithium-ion batteries that can recharge via solar panels.

Ingenuity is made up of a box carrying cameras and instruments, four spindly landing legs and two counter-rotating rotors. The rover will film the helicopter as it flies.

NASA describes Ingenuity as primarily an experiment to prove it can fly an aircraft on another planet and record images.

Ingenuity is considered a demonstration of a new technology, and NASA believes it could help to identify interesting targets for future Mars exploration. The helicopter's first flight is scheduled for two months after the rover lands.

Nasas Perseverance rover heads to Mars to look for evidence of ancient life – Belfast Telegraph

Nasas new car-sized robotic spacecraft is on its way to Mars in a mission to search for evidence of ancient life.

he Perseverance rover successfully blasted off from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on Thursday at 12.50pm UK time aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket despite a 4.2-magnitude earthquake that shook southern California just 20 minutes before departure.

It is the third mission heading to the Red Planet this month after launches by the UAE and China.

The six-wheeled rover will now travel 314 million miles over a period of nearly seven months before attempting to land on a 31-mile crater named Jezero.

Landing on Mars is notoriously difficult because of its thin and dynamic atmosphere a feat that has been described as seven minutes of terror.

Nasa has succeeded in getting a only handful of functioning probes and rovers onto the Martian surface and more than half of the spacecraft sent there have either blown up or crashed into the surface.

Just before lift-off, Nasa administrator Jim Bridenstine said: Theres a reason we call the robot Perseverance because going to Mars is hard.

It is always hard. Its never been easy. In this case, its harder than ever before because were doing it in the midst of a pandemic.

Satellite images suggest Jezero, located on the western edge of Isidis Planitia a giant impact basin just north of the Martian equator, may have been a lake more than 3.5 billion years ago, when Mars was warmer and wetter.

Scientists believe evidence of microbial life could be preserved in the clay and muddy rocks in the crater, if it ever existed on the planet.

Along with several sophisticated instruments that will gather information about Mars geology, atmosphere, and environmental conditions, the rover is also carrying a small 1.8kg helicopter.

Called Ingenuity, the copter will fly short distances and will mark the first attempt at powered, controlled flight on another planet.

If successful, it could lead to more flying probes on other planets.

Perseverance will also trial technologies to help astronauts make future expeditions to Mars.

One such device includes an instrument, called Moxie, that will practise making oxygen from the planets atmosphere which is mostly made up of carbon dioxide.

Meanwhile, scientists in the UK will help Perseverance select the Martian samples to be brought back to Earth.

Researchers at Imperial College London and the Natural History Museum will identify samples that could contain evidence of past life and study the mineralogy and geochemistry of the different rocks found in the crater.

Professor Mark Sephton, an astrobiologist at Imperial, said: I hope that the samples we select and return will help current and future generations of scientists answer the question of whether there was ever life on the Red Planet.

With one carefully chosen sample from Mars, we could discover that the history of life on the Earth is not unique in the Universe.

Sue Horne, head of space exploration at the UK Space Agency, told the PA news agency: We will continue to explore the heavens so long as the moon, Mars and the myriad celestial bodies beyond spark fires in our curiosity and if Perseverance helps us find life on Mars, it will be a defining moment for humankind.

The UK Space Agency is supporting these endeavours to explore our solar system with leading-edge robotics, and it is a credit to our expertise in the UK that researchers from both Imperial College London and the Natural History Museum are part of the international crack team working on this Nasa mission.

It is also a busy week for Nasa, as the US space agency gears up to welcome two astronauts home as they attempt a splashdown off the Florida coast on Sunday.

Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley will arrive in the Crew Dragon spacecraft, called Endeavour, which was designed and built by SpaceX.

The duo will close out a mission that was designed to test SpaceXs human spaceflight system, including launch, docking, splashdown, and recovery operations, Nasa said.

Sony Vision-S Heads Home to Tokyo for Further Evolution – autoevolution

The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas managed quite fast to steal the red carpet from underneath the classic North American International Auto Show in Detroit. And did it so well that NAIAS organizers moved the date while technology companies started building cars. And by that we mean Sony, not your garage-based autonomous vehicle startup. It was a surprise indeed, especially since the Vision-S is a fully functioning electric vehicle prototype.

But Sonys conglomerate arm stretches so far out in modern times it was no hustle for them to design and build in complete silence a technology development prototype car. The Vision-S concept is like a moving display for all of Sonys mobility-related technologies, from ADAS (advanced driving assistance systems) features to luxury audio specifications and even movies.

The company amazed Las Vegas CES attendees with novelties such as the 360 Reality Audio speakers that were built into each seat, AI plus 5G and cloud technologies, not to mention the 33 sensors used for that advanced autonomous feature. We, on the other hand, were stunned to find out that while Sony has no intention to put a Vision-S car into series production, the prototype is fully functional.

This is because Sony was smart enough to partner with automotive component manufacturers such as Magna, Continental or Bosch. More so, the EV packs two electric motors good for 200 kW, AWD and an air suspension. With estimated performance ratings of 0-100 kph (62 mph) in 4.8 seconds and a 240 kph (149 mph) top speed, we could easily see it compete against a Tesla.

The company has revealed the Vision-S is visiting yet another region of Earth. After it left North America the prototype first went to Magna Steyrs Graz facility in Austria for additional technical modifications in preparations for test drives on public roads. Now the Japanese concept is finally reaching the Land of the Rising Sun.

Thus, it has been transported to Sonys headquarters in Tokyo for further development of the sensing and audio technologies. This is also where the aforementioned public trials will take place, all set to start before the end of the current fiscal year. Are we getting mixed signals right here or what?!

WATCH LIVE: Heads Of Amazon, Apple, Facebook And Google Testify On Big Tech’s Power – Red River Radio

Updated at 6:35 p.m. ET

Are Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple "emperors of the online economy" that stifle competition and hurt consumers? Not surprisingly, the tech giants' chief executives told Congress: absolutely not. The concern that too much power is concentrated in too few companies is unfounded, they said Wednesday.

Does Apple punish its rivals on the App Store to score more customers?

Democratic Rep. Lucy McBath of Georgia drew attention to Apple's Screen Time app, a service allowing parents to limit their kids' phone use.

When Apple introduced the app in 2018, competing parental control apps, such as OurPact, were booted from the App Store for not meeting Apple's safety requirements.

Apple CEO Tim Cook told McBath those fears were justified.

"We were concerned, congresswoman, about the privacy and security of kids," Cook said, noting the app was vulnerable to third-party takeovers. "So we were worried about their safety."

But McBath said House investigators discovered that rival parental control apps that were kicked out of the App Store were readmitted six months later without making significant privacy overhauls.

"Of course, six months is truly an eternity for small businesses to be shut down, even worse if all the while a larger competitor is actually taking away customers," she said.

McBath pointed to an email in which an Apple employee responded to a mother complaining about the removal of parental control apps. The Apple representative suggested that the mother download Apple's Screen Time.

Cook said that "there are many reasons why" an app may not meet the App Store's guidelines, dismissing the suggestion that Apple squashed its competition to favor its own service.

McBath referenced a second example, this one involving the publisher Random House, which said Apple held back the introduction of its app while pushing its own similar product.

"Even some of the largest companies in the country fear your power. Our evidence suggests that your company has used its power to harm your rivals and boost your own business," McBath said.

"This is fundamentally unfair," she said. "Ultimately, it reduces the competition and the choices made to consumers, and that's a great concern to all of us."

CEO vows Google won't play favorites in 2020 election

Google CEO Sundar Pichai faced a barrage of questions from Rep. Jim Jordan. The Ohio Republican said he's concerned that Google will tailor its search engine to give a leg up to presumed Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden over President Trump in searches related to the November election.

When Jordan asked Pichai for a promise to Americans that Google will not favor Biden in the 2020 election, Pichai said, "We don't do any work to politically tilt anything one way or another."

Jordan persisted with the same question.

Pichai eventually agreed to make a commitment that Google will not tilt its features to help Biden and that the search engine will not be used to silence conservatives.

"Yeah, you have my commitment. It's always been true, and we'll continue to conduct ourselves in a neutral way," Pichai said.

That line of inquiry was far afield from the purpose of the hearing, noted Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, D-Pa., saying she'd like to turn the focus back to antitrust, rather than "fringe conspiracy theories."

This remark incited Jordan, who interrupted Scanlon, and led to a screaming match between Jordan and the Democratic leadership about following the rules of the hearing.

"When someone comes after my motives for asking questions," Jordan shouted, "I should get a chance to respond."

Does Amazon use sellers' data to help itself?

The first inquiry for Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos finally arrived from Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., some two hours into the hearing. Jayapal zeroed in on the subcommittee's central concern about Amazon: Does the company use the data it collects from other sellers on the platform for its benefit?

"I can't answer that question yes or no," Bezos said. "We have a policy against using seller-specific data to aid our private label business, but I can't guarantee you that that policy has never been violated."

Committee lawmakers have previously accused Amazon of "lack of candor" about how it might be using other sellers' data to give an edge to its own business, something Amazon executives have, until now, denied was happening.

Critics have made the case that Amazon employees may have used such data to create the retailer's own private-label products, which Bezos told lawmakers the company was still investigating.

Jayapal noted that Amazon has access to information about consumer habits, sellers' pricing and inventory data, a trove of details that could be ripe for abuse if used to make business decisions about Amazon's own products.

"You can set the rules of the game for your competitors, but not actually follow those same rules for yourself," Jayapal said.

"You have access to data that your competitors do not have," she continued, adding that if Amazon was "continuously monitoring" such data to make sure that other sellers "are never going to get big enough that they can compete with you that is actually the concern that the committee has."

Google's Pichai is pressed on being "the gateway to the Internet"

Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., the subcommittee chairman, spent all of his first five-minute block of questions on Google the company at most immediate risk of antitrust action. The Department of Justice is reportedly preparing to sue the company over its advertising business, and could be joined by state attorneys general who have also been investigating Google.

Cicilline pressed CEO Pichai on whether Google's business model presents a conflict of interest, because it has an incentive to give search results that keep users on its own site rather than anywhere else on the Internet.

"As Google became the gateway to the Internet, it began to abuse its power," Cicilline said.

Pichai responded that Google "always focuses on providing users the most relevant information." Cicilline appeared annoyed at Pichai's answers, cutting him off several times to move on to another question.

A long wait for Bezos

Over an hour and a half into the hearing, Bezos appearing in Congress for the first time, whose company employs 1 million workers and has more than 150 million paying subscribers had yet to receive a single question.

His presence was slated to become a powerful accomplishment of the House Judiciary Committee, but the early questioning had left him muted on the live video feed, reaching for some snacks.

The hearing, meanwhile, took a 10-minute break to fix a technical problem "with one of our witnesses."

Did Facebook buy Instagram to neutralize a competitor?

Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., pressed Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on why his company bought Instagram for $1 billion back in 2012. That's a key part of competition questions facing the social media giant. Critics accuse Facebook of buying or copying rivals such as Instagram and WhatsApp to squash competition.

Nadler said in its investigation, the committee got documents from Facebook in which Zuckerberg discussed "neutralizing a competitor" as a reason to pursue Instagram.

"Facebook saw Instagram as a threat that could potentially siphon business away from Facebook. And so rather than compete with it, Facebook bought it," Nadler said.

Zuckerberg pointed out that the Federal Trade Commission OK'd the merger at the time. "With hindsight it probably looks obvious that Instagram would have reached the scale that it has today, but at the time it was far from obvious," he said.

Cicilline interjected to say that the "failures" of the FTC in 2012 do not mean it was not a violation of antitrust law.

Panel chairman: Under coronavirus, Big Tech "likely to emerge stronger and more powerful"

Up first was Cicilline, chairman of the antitrust subcommittee that was holding the hearing. He has been the driving force behind the yearlong investigation of Big Tech.

In his opening remarks, he described the dominance of each company: Amazon in online shopping, Apple in smartphones and apps, Facebook in social media and Google in search and ads. And he pointed out that thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, all four "are likely to emerge stronger and more powerful than ever before."

"As American families shift more of their work, shopping, and communication online, these giants stand to profit," Cicilline said. "Locally owned businesses, meanwhile mom and pop stores on Main Street face an economic crisis unlike any in recent history."

The committee's investigation has turned up a pattern among the tech giants, he said. They control access to information and marketplaces, use that control to "surveil" rivals and protect their power, and favor their own businesses.

"Simply put: They have too much power," Cicilline said. For consumers, he said, this is reminiscent of previous American monopolies: railroads, oil and telephone companies, and even another tech giant Microsoft.

"This investigation also goes to the heart of whether we, as a people, govern ourselves, or whether we let ourselves be governed by private monopolies," he said. "Our founders would not bow before a king. Nor should we bow before the emperors of the online economy."

Jordan: "Big Tech is out to get conservatives"

Wednesday's hearing was supposed to be about Big Tech's power and market dominance. But Republicans tried to make it about something else: accusations that online platforms are biased against conservatives.

"Big Tech is out to get conservatives," Jordan, the Ohio Republican, said in his fiery opening statement.

Jordan then rapidly read aloud headlines making claims that conservative-leaning publications and voices had been suppressed or censored on Facebook and Google.

He also mentioned Twitter, even though it was not part of the hearing. Jordan said conservative members of Congress were "shadow banned" on Twitter. He said Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said it was a glitch.

"If I had a nickel for every time I heard it was just a glitch, I wouldn't be as wealthy as our witnesses, but I'd be doing all right," Jordan said.

"We all think the free market is great. We think competition is great. We love the fact that these are American companies. But what's not great is censoring people, censoring conservatives and trying to impact elections," Jordan said. "If it doesn't end, there has to be consequences."

Before Jordan's remarks, Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., also mentioned the belief, strongly contested by large tech companies, that conservatives do not get a fair shake by the online platforms, calling reports of conservative censorship troubling.

"Conservatives are consumers, too, and they need the protection of antitrust laws," Sensenbrenner said.

The hearing erupted in chaos after Jordan asked that Rep. Mike Johnson of the House Judiciary's Constitution subcommittee be allowed to participate in the hearing. The request was denied.

Jordan then repeatedly interrupted Cicilline, the antitrust subcommittee chairman, who was attempting to introduce Bezos.

"We're talking about people's liberties here," Jordan said over Cicilline.

"Put your mask on," Jordan was told.

Trump tweets: "Bring fairness to Big Tech"

The hearing got underway after an hourlong delay. First up were opening statements from the top members of the committee and the four CEOs. Then lawmakers each got five minutes to question Bezos, Cook, Pichai and Zuckerberg. All four joined remotely via video.

The focus of the hearing, and the committee's investigation, was meant to be about competition but lawmakers seemed unable to resist bringing up other complaints about tech companies, from the spread of misinformation to alleged anti-conservative bias.

That also was the message coming from the White House, where President Trump repeatedly has accused tech companies of treating him unfairly. Shortly after noon, he tweeted: "If Congress doesn't bring fairness to Big Tech, which they should have done years ago, I will do it myself with Executive Orders. In Washington, it has been ALL TALK and NO ACTION for years, and the people of our Country are sick and tired of it!"

Our original story by Bobby Allyn continues:

Amid a time of rising tensions with China, some of the powerful CEOs will suggest that too much regulation could provide an opportunity for Chinese tech firms to gain a global toehold, according to opening remarks from the tech leaders released by the House Judiciary antitrust subcommittee.

"We believe in values democracy, competition, inclusion and free expression that the American economy was built on," Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg will tell lawmakers, according to his prepared opening statement. "China is building its own version of the internet focused on very different ideas, and they are exporting their vision to other countries."

Amazon's Jeff Bezos, the world's richest person who will be making his first appearance in front of Congress, will bring in his personal story of being adopted by an immigrant father when he was 4 years old and spending his summers on his grandparents' ranch in Texas, saying his upbringing instilled in him a work ethic that has helped Amazon prosper.

Amazon's rise to becoming the largest online retailer, Bezos will say, is an achievement only made possible in America. But Walmart, he will point out, is still twice the size of Amazon.

"We did not start out as the largest marketplace eBay was many times our size. It was only by focusing on supporting sellers and giving them the best tools we could invent that we were able to succeed and eventually surpass eBay," Bezos says in his released testimony.

Google's Sundar Pichai will steer attention to the other ways people navigate the online world, even though 90% of Internet searches happen on Google.

"People have more ways to search for information than ever before and increasingly this is happening outside the context of only a search engine," Pichai plans to tell the House panel. "You can ask Alexa a question from your kitchen; read your news on Twitter; ask friends for information via WhatsApp; and get recommendations on Snapchat or Pinterest."

Apple's Tim Cook will echo the appeals to patriotism raised among the other tech CEOs by touting how Apple's strength, becoming the most valuable company in the world, represents success "only possible in this country."

He will also join the other tech leaders by arguing that Apple has plenty of competition.

"The smartphone market is fiercely competitive, and companies like Samsung, LG, Huawei and Google have built very successful smartphone businesses offering different approaches," Cook will say in his opening statement to lawmakers.

Whether members of the House Judiciary Committee's antitrust subcommittee buy these arguments over the course of what is set to be an hours-long spectacle is another matter.

And it remains to be seen if the public will gain new insight into the tech companies, and whether lawmakers can pin down answers from the typically cautious technology executives.

The CEOs will be testifying via video at the same time, rather than one by one, a format seen as taking the heat off any individual executive and something the companies requested.

While the hearing centers on questions around market dominance, lawmakers are free to pepper the executives with questions about any topic.

The anything-goes format will likely divert the hearing away from antitrust and delve into issues such as perceived anti-conservative bias on social media platforms, a common Republican refrain. And Democrats, often raising concern about foreign election meddling, may inquire about possible efforts to influence the vote online ahead of the November election.

More on-topic probing could involve issues such as acquisitions that have grown the reach of Big Tech.

For instance, Facebook has acquired nearly 90 companies, including Instagram, WhatsApp and more recently, Giphy, a tool for creating animated images.

However it goes, one thing is certain: It will be a day for the history books.

The hearing is the first time all four technology leaders have testified together, as scrutiny over the companies' nearly $5 trillion market power draws intensifying scrutiny in Washington.

The CEOs will be on the defensive as House lawmakers grill them about whether the business empire each company has created has resulted in monopoly-like dominance that distorts the marketplace in their favor.

Prince William reveals his bodyguard posed as a SNIPER to scare football rival – Express

The Duke of Cambridge confessed that when he played football everyone wanted to break my legs. And his solution was to have one of his protection officers point a laser pen at one of his rivals, but the scare only kept him away for ten minutes.

The future king shared the anecdote, along with some embarrassing stories during an appearance on BBC Radio Five Lives That Peter Crouch Podcast.

During the laid-back discussion, William and the former footballer and podcast host drank beer and even had a curry delivered to the studio.

William also took the opportunity to talk about Heads Up, his mental health initiative.

The campaign focuses on urging football fans to talk about their feelings in order to improve their mental health.

The podcast was recorded before lockdown started and it contains a catch-up video call from earlier this month.

Speaking of the mischievous prank, William said: A long time ago, I got one of my policemen to take a laser pen out with them.

And I got him to red mark, red dot one of the players.

I was about 15 at the time, I said, see, hes following you, following you.

Mr Crouch asked him if he was pretending to have a sniper on him.

The Duke said: Exactly. It put him off for about, you know, ten minutes.

The Heads Up campaign is a joint collaboration between Heads Together and the Football Association, which the Duke is president of.

He hopes the initiative will help show the world that our mental health is just as important as our physical health.

During a speech to delegates on the opening of the campaign, William said: We wouldnt think twice to ask a mate how he was doing after he broke an arm or an ankle.

We wouldnt hesitate to talk about our routine at the gym, or even our need to make it a bit more regular.

But when it comes to our mental health, we and, by we, I mean men in particular often have nothing to say at all.

When we see a friend that looks down, too many of us dont know how to ask if hes okay. When we ourselves feel down, we are often ashamed to say we need help.

And when we know we need help, we dont know where to start.

The consequences of this silence confusion, stigma, and even shame have reached a crisis point in the UK.

At its worst, it has led to appalling rates of suicide in this country the leading cause of death for men under 45.

Every day, failing to tackle mental health means that we are not reaching our potential at work. When you struggle in silence, you cannot give it your all.

Failing to tackle our mental health means we are often unwittingly passing on our silent suffering to our children, who need us to take our mental health seriously to play our full role.

He added: We are here today to take a big step in shattering this silence. We are going to use one of the most powerful, unifying forces in our society football to start the biggest ever conversation on mental health.

Heads Up will show men we all have mental health just like we have physical health. Building on the amazing attitude that led England to the World Cup semi-finals, it will show us all mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness.

Thin Red Line Rolling Rally supporting firefighter flag is planned in Newton on Thursday – The Boston Globe

Supporters of allowing Newton firefighters to display a Thin Red Line flag at the Nonantum fire station plan to hold a rolling rally from the fire house to City Hall Thursday, organizers said on Facebook.

The flag, which firefighters displayed in tribute to fallen comrades, flew for more than two years at Fire Station 4 before it was ordered removed in June.

Mayor Ruthanne Fuller issued an order to department heads that allows only US flags and Newton banners to be displayed on city buildings. Her decision led hundreds to protest at the station in June.

Organizers of that protest are now preparing a rally that will travel from Fire Station 4 in Nonantum to City Hall, where they will deliver a petition that calls for the flag to be restored at the fire house, according to a Facebook post.

Participants in the rolling rally are being asked to gather at 4 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot across the street from the Nonantum fire house, according to the post.

The demonstration will begin at 4:30 p.m. and travel along Crafts, Washington, and Walnut streets, before arriving at City Hall at about 5 p.m. the post said.

Please line the route and wave your red line flags! the post said.

The group also posted photos of signs supporting the flag that read Honor the firefighters.

Fuller has previously said her decision was not about the firefighters flag, which is a tribute that she supports.

The order she issued in June is about not putting the City in a position of censoring/endorsing which banners and ideas put forward by our employees will be on the sides of our buildings, a city spokeswoman has said.

City councilors have also called on the mayor to reverse the decision, and Local 863, which represents firefighters, has filed a complaint with the states Department of Labor Relations.

Fuller has offered to fly the firefighter flag on a special ceremonial pole at Newton City Hall. In a Facebook post earlier this month, rally organizers said they considered this a thoughtful gesture, but declined.

Our goal is to have the flag put back in Newton Fire Station 4, organizers wrote.

John McNamara, manager of the 1986 Red Sox, dies at 88 – CBS Sports

Former minor-league player and Boston Red Sox manager John McNamara, who managed the club to the 1986 American League pennant, died on Tuesday, his family confirmed to the Boston Globe. He was 88.

McNamara's managerial career spanned three decades and six teams, including two stints with the Angels. He managed the Athletics (1969-70), Padres (1974-77), Reds (1979-82), Angels (1983-84), Red Sox (1985-88), Indians (1990-91), and the Angels again on an interim basis (1996). McNamara also coached in the minors and worked as a scout.

Under McNamara, the Red Sox came back from a 3-1 series deficit to beat the Angels and advance to the World Series in 1986. He was criticized for a series of questionable moves in Game 6 of the World Series, including removing Roger Clemens for a pinch-hitter and leaving a hobbled Billy Buckner at first base.

Beyond baseball, McNamara touched many players and personnel with his kindness and the demand that people be treated fairly. Reggie Jackson thanked McNamara during his Hall of Fame speech in 1967. McNamara managed Jackson in the minors.

"I learned to understand friendship and sensitivity from a very special friend by the name of John McNamara,'' Jackson said. "He was my manager, and he would not allow the team to eat in a restaurant where I was not allowed to eat. I always wondered why we ate sandwiches on the bus and made only essential pit stops. I understood care from that. I'll always remember you, John, for your dignity and sensitivity and for stepping up at a time when very few did.''

McNamara was named AL Manager of the Year in 1986. He retired with a career 1,160-1,233 (.485) record and had his most success with the Reds (279-244) and Red Sox (279-273).

Maryland Fishing Report July 29 – maryland.gov

July 29, 2020

White perch are a perfect species to target while fishing with your kids. Dylan Tawney caught these two nice white perch while fishing with his family. Photo by Andrew Tawney

Hot and dry weather continues across Maryland. These conditions put heat-related stress on the summer striped bass population, especially in the upper Chesapeake Bay. We ask anglers to focus their fishing on early morning hours, or target other species during the heat wave. Throughout Marylands warmest months, the departments online striped bass fishing advisory forecast provides a seven-day outlook to help anglers reduce striped bass mortality during the summer fishing season.

On July 30 at noon the Maryland Department of Natural Resources is hosting our fourth Maryland Fishing Roundtable webinar on summer fishing. This week, the Maryland Fishing Report team including Maryland recreational fisheries specialist Erik Zlokovitz, Tom Parham of DNRs Eyes on the Bay, and biologist Steve Doctor will give tips on fishing in the Ocean City area. You can join the discussion through a link on the departments online calendar.

All anglers can feel free to send any pictures of your catches to fishingreports.dnr@maryland.gov for possible inclusion in our fishing report or the daily Anglers Log.

Expect another repeat of the last few weeks with warm, sunny skies, a chance of thunderstorms, and low winds most of the week. Main Chesapeake Bay surface water temperatures have risen to the mid 80s or higher. These warm waters and corresponding low oxygen areas are appearing from Swan Point down to the mouth of the Potomac.

These hot, calm conditions will continue to warm surface waters and limit oxygen being recharged to the deeper waters by wind mixing, increasing the chance of algal blooms. This will result in gamefish remaining at similar locations on cooler river mouths or main bay structure but moving to slightly shallower depths, just above the Dont Fish Below this Depth mark and maximum suitable oxygen depth, in the coolest water available.

The coolest, oxygenated water is found in the deeper waters from Pooles Island down to the Virginia state line. The other way to find cooler water is to fish the shallows at first light when surface water temperatures can be several degrees cooler. As always, best fishing areas could be further refined by intersecting these cool, oxygenated areas with underwater points, hard bottom, drop-offs, and large schools of baitfish.

Expect reduced water clarity from algal blooms along the upper western shore rivers including the Bush, Back, and Gunpowder rivers. In addition, water clarity in the upper Patuxent and Wicomico rivers and Colonial Beach will also be reduced from algal blooms. To see the latest water clarity conditions, check Eyes on the Bay Satellite Maps.

Expect normal flows all week from most of Marylands rivers and streams. There will be above average tidal currents all week as a result of a full moon Aug. 3.

For more detailed and up-to-date fishing conditions in your area of the bay, be sure to check out Click Before You Cast. Get regular updates on Marylands waters sent to your inbox with our Eyes on the Bay newsletter. Sign up online.

The Conowingo Dam remains on a late afternoon power generation water release, with low flow in the mornings due to abnormally dry conditions. The area below the dam is one of the best places in Maryland to target large flathead catfish; fish up to 55 pounds have been caught here in the past two years.

Fishing for blue catfish continues to be very good at the Conowingo Dam and in the lower Susquehanna River and other tidal rivers. Channel catfish are abundant in all of the regions tidal rivers. Catfish can be caught on fresh cut baits, soft crab, chicken livers, clam snouts, and worms.

White perch should provide steady action in the upper bay into August and September. Many anglers are finding a lot of small perch in some areas but a few big fish can be found with time and effort. The usual small spinners, spinnerbaits, and 1/16 to 1/8-ounce lead heads with Mr. Twister grubs on light spinning tackle all catch fish. Pieces of bloodworm, grass shrimp, wild seafood shrimp, and small minnows are all good baits, especially when fishing around docks and pilings. Medium-sized minnows fished under a bobber around shoreline structure will often catch a large grade of perch.

The usual bottom fishing areas for saltwater panfish spot, perch and croaker should be productive during the next few weeks. Spot and white perch can be found on hard bottom areas, shell bottom, oyster bars, or shoals off Sandy Point State Park beach, the mouth of the Magothy, Bay Bridge pilings, and the Severn River. White perch can also be found at the Snake Reef, Belvidere Shoal, and the 7-foot and 9-foot knolls. We continue to see small croaker in the Severn River, South River, and other areas, but most are sub-legal. Hopefully these small croaker under 8 inches are a good sign for the future of the fishery.

We are asking anglers to avoid targeting striped bass during this heat wave. However, if you do target striped bass, remember that you must use non-offset circle hooks at all time when chumming or livelining. We also advise using lures with single, barbless hooks to make releasing fish easier, and care must be taken when handling fish. Never use a rag while unhooking a striped bass this will rub off their protective slime layer, making them more vulnerable to the summer combination of heat stress and disease.

This cutlassfish (also known as ribbonfish) was caught by Bird Dog Wheeler in the Miles River. Photo by Karen Starkey

Bottom fishing action for both spot and perch can be found at Hacketts and Thomas points on shell bottom and bars, as well as around Eastern Bay, Poplar Island, and the Severn and Choptank rivers. Small bluefish and spanish mackerel should be moving into the area, with the combination of hot and dry weather and salinities being relatively high. Anglers are hoping for a repeat of last years action on Spanish mackerel, which extended all the way to the upper bay.

Speckled trout action continues from the Choptank River south along the Dorchester County shorelines, and down into the Crisfield areas marsh shorelines and cuts. Grass beds in 3-5 feet of water and stump fields are excellent places to cast swim shads, paddle tails and other plastics on lead head jigs. Gulp plastics and soft plastics in pearl or white with sparkles are popular.

In addition to the presence of speckled trout and puppy drum in the shallows, other oddball species will show up in the middle bay during summers with moderate to high salinities.

Fishing for white perch in the shallower shoreline areas should be steady from now into September. Shoreline structure such as bulkheads, submerged rocks, fallen trees, and riprap are good areas to cast small spinners, spinnerbaits, and jigs. If you are fishing with kids, remember that white perch and spot can also be caught off of docks and piers in 5-10 feet of water with a simple one-hook or two-hook bottom rig baited with pieces of soft crab, bloodworm, or grass shrimp. Synthetic bloodworm-flavored fishbites also work well.

A mix of blue and channel catfish should continue to provide steady action for anglers fishing with cut bait, chicken livers, soft peeler crabs, and other baits in most of the tidal rivers within the region. Channel catfish can be found in every tidal river, and blue catfish are found mostly in the Choptank and Nanticoke rivers.

Cobia fishing is still a good bet at the Middle Grounds, the Target Ship, the Mud Leads, and Point Lookout. The traditional methods are chumming and fishing with cut bait or live eels. In past years, anglers have also caught large cobia with other live baits such as spot and small bluefish. Sight fishing with live eels or large soft plastics on a lead head jig is a trending new method that started in Virginia. This requires using an elevated platform to spot fish, and polarized sunglasses to cut through the glare on the water.

Toby Frey caught this big spotted sea trout that was just under 24 inches long. Photo courtesy of Toby Frey

Trolling spoons and hoses (surgical tube lures) will produce both cobia and large red drum around the Target Ship, with bluefish in the mix. Large red drum are also being caught and released by anglers who are light-tackle jigging with soft plastics.

Small bluefish are moving into the region; they are running about 1 pound, which is fun for the kids and a perfect eating size, fresh or smoked. As a reminder, the daily limit is 3 bluefish per day for anglers fishing from private boats or shore, and 5 bluefish per day when fishing from a charter boat. Spanish mackerel should keep moving into the lower bay and are being caught by fast trolling about 7 knots is the target speed with small Drone or Clark spoons.

Spot and white perch should provide steady bottom fishing action in the hard bottom areas of the lower Patuxent River, Honga River, and off Hoopers Island. Pieces of bloodworm on a bottom rig is the best bait for spot.

The shallow-water fishing for speckled trout continues with soft paddletail baits near shallow grass beds along the Eastern Shore marshes. Soft plastics and paddletails work best over deeper grass, shoreline structure, rocks, riprap, wood, and stump fields. The best speckled trout fishing is occurring along the marshes of the Pocomoke and Tangier sounds up to Hoopers Island.

There is some action for bottom fish and small bluefish along the western shore and Point Lookout area and into the lower Potomac River. Also be ready with metal lures in case Spanish mackerel show up on the surface. Striped bass can often be part of the mix, however anglers need to be aware that the main stem of the Potomac River is closed to all striped bass fishing from July 7 to Aug. 20 by order of the Potomac River Fisheries Commission.

Recreational crabbing should improve as we move into early August, with more crabs growing to legal size. The middle and lower bay offers the best opportunity to catch a bushel of crabs per outing. Trotlining at dawn is the best method, and razor clams tend to be the most popular bait in recent seasons. Work the 12-foot to 15-foot edges to find the crabs.

We expect trout streams in western Maryland to continue running low and clear until the current drought conditions subside. As usual, this will require finesse fly-fishing techniques with long casts and light tippets. Small terrestrial fly patterns such as ants, beetles, and hoppers are good choices.

The upper Potomac River will continue running low and warm until weather patterns change. Target fast-moving and deeper waters for smallmouth bass, and cast grubs, small crankbaits, and tubes. There is also some topwater fishing along grass edges and shallows with buzzbaits and poppers at dawn and dusk. Department biologists have been supplementing natural reproduction of smallmouth bass in the freshwater Potomac to enhance the fishery.

Lewis Rawlings caught this bass and several others on a spinnerbait at the pond at Indian Creek Natural Resources Management Area. Photo by Eric Packard

Currently, there is a multi-state collaborative effort that is trying to determine the effects of angling for muskellunge during thermal stress. Anglers should use caution when targeting, catching, and handling muskies. As water temperatures in the river rise, the resident muskies will be stressed and will be resting in slightly cooler waters in feeder creeks. In these conditions, muskies cannot survive catch-and-release stress and should not be targeted.

Carp should provide steady summer fun in the upper Potomac, C&O Canal, and various ponds with the traditional baits of scented dough ball baits or corn. Fly casters can catch carp with purple flies that resemble mulberries in areas where the berries fall into the water from overhanging branches.

Farm ponds, reservoirs, rivers, and impoundments offer fun fishing for largemouth bass. Ponds and small lakes can be fished from shore with a variety of weedless soft plastics, including plastic worms, flukes, and lizards in grass, lily pads, or near sunken wood structure.

For anglers targeting northern snakeheads, lures such as buzzbaits and frogs are excellent baits to cast over thick grass. Chatterbaits and paddle tails will also attract snakeheads. The tributaries of the tidal Potomac, Patuxent, Patapsco, and other tidal rivers around the Chesapeake have expanding populations of northern snakeheads. For anglers targeting snakehead in central Maryland, try Little Seneca Lake at Blackhills Regional Park. On the Eastern Shore, the Dorchester County tidal backwaters tributaries to the Nanticoke and Wicomico are consistent hotspots.

Blue catfish are always a good bet for boat anglers using cut bait in the Fort Washington area of the Potomac. Good places for blue catfish in the Patuxent River are along steep channel edges above Jacksons Landing, Jug Bay, and the mouth of Western Branch.

The tidal Potomac River is an excellent place to fish for large blue catfish from shore. Fort Washington allows access to the Potomac and is a safe place to take kids fishing. National Colonial Farm has a pier that is easy to reach and there is more limited shoreline fishing at Marshall Hall. Smallwood State Park is a great place to fish from shore and it has the amenities that make fishing with kids a lot easier. Finally, Mallows Bay is open to shoreline fishing, but the middle of summer finds a good deal of submerged vegetation and algae. The Patuxent River has a growing number of blue catfish but is fairly limited in easy, kid-safe shoreline access. Theres plenty of shoreline owned by state and local governments, but much of the shore in the tidal portion is either cliff or marsh. Still, the Patuxent River park has several piers for fishing Jacksons Landing and Selbys Landing are the farthest north and are good spots to try, although they can get crowded.

Kristen Lenox caught this nice 19-inch flounder near Ocean City Inlet. Photo by Scott Lenox

Flounder are biting in the usual spots around the inlet, but many are under the 16.5- inch size limit. More flounder are starting to mix in with sea bass on the ocean artificial reefs and shipwrecks. A mix of Spanish and king mackerel are being taken while trolling, generally inside the 20-fathom line or further inshore on lumps and other bottom structure. The chunk bite on yellowfin tuna at inshore lumps such as the Hot Dog, Hambone and the Rockpile seems to have slowed down a bit based on recent reports. White marlin, blue marlin, and dolphinfish are being caught at the canyons, such as Washington, Norfolk, and Poormans.

Effective Aug. 17, NOAA Fisheries requires private recreational tilefish vessels in the Mid-Atlantic to get permits and file catch reports. This action is being taken to better characterize and monitor the recreational fisheries for both blueline and golden tilefish. Get your federal private recreational tilefish vessel permit through the NOAA Fisheries website. Call 978-282-8438 for questions about the permitting process. Private recreational tilefish anglers must also fill out and submit an electronic vessel trip report within 24 hours of returning to port for trips where tilefish were targeted or retained.

Anglers fishing near shore or in the surf are reminded to use caution when handling sharks. Do not drag them high up on the sand. Dusky and sandbar sharks look similar, and both sharks are prohibited from harvest. If you cannot identify a shark, let it go in the water. State and federal regulations require shark anglers to use corrodible, non-stainless circle hooks except when fishing with artificial flies and lures, and any shark that is not being kept is to be released in the water. Anglers must have a device capable of quickly cutting either the leader or the hook.

Also, any harvested bluefin tuna, billfish, swordfish, or shark (except spiny dogfish) must be reported via the Catch Card Census before it is moved from a boat or point of landing, to be in compliance with state and federal regulations. Catch cards and tags are available at tackle shops, marinas, and kiosks around Ocean City, and online. Please use the kiosk at the Colonel Jack Taylor Boathouse located in west Ocean City when businesses are closed. Simply fill out the card found in the kiosk and tear off the receipt on the edge of the card, and leave the card in the kiosk. Identification and compliance information is available from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

‘The reaction was brutal’ – Beckham thankful social media was not around after 1998 World Cup red card – Goal

The former England star became one of the most hated men in the country after kicking out at Diego Simeone in the round of 16 loss to Argentina

David Beckham has spoken about the importance of being open about your mental stateafter recalling the vilification he went through after the 1998 World Cup.

England were eliminated at the last-16 stage by Argentina, after Beckham was sent off for kicking out at Diego Simeone after being fouled by the now-Atletico Madrid manager.

Beckham turned from media darling to one of the most hated men in England. He received death threats, an image of a Beckham effigy hanging outside a pub found infamy, while the Mirrors headline of 10 Heroic Lions, One Stupid Boy was followed by a David Beckham dartboard.

Then at Manchester United, Beckham recovered his reputation to once again become one of the worlds most popular sports stars, butlooking back, he is grateful social media hadnt yet been invented to amplify the experience.

I made a mistake in 98 and the reaction at the time was pretty brutal, Beckham said as part of the Mentally Healthy Football declaration from the Heads Up campaign.

If social media was around when I was going through that time, it would have been a whole different story, but I was lucky, I had a support system within Manchester United, the manager, and obviously family.

Did I feel it was ok at the time to go to someone and say I need help? No, because it was a different era, and I just felt that I had to keep it all in and deal with it myself. Whereas now Im the one preaching to my kids and to other kids that I talk to out there that its really important to talk.

We all know now that its ok not to be ok, and its ok to say that. Its ok to come out and say, I need help.

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti is also part of the Heads Up campaign, and he says he has seen welcome signs of change from players in recent years.

Article continues below

He said: In my experience, it is really rare that players come to you and say, Mentally Im not good.

Its changing in the past few years. I hope that this is going to [continue to] change because it is a really important aspect.

It is really important for the relationship you are able to build with the players. Its really important the club is able to build an environment where the players feel comfortable, safe and feel they can explain their thoughts without a problem.

East Kilbride hairdresser is delighted to be back doing what she loves – Daily Record

An East Kilbride hairdresser whose family have run a salon for nearly 40 years were among the businesses finally allowed to reopen last week.

It came with the easing of lockdown and the country moved in to Phase 3.

Nikkola Steele, who runs Red Heads in Greenhills Shopping Centre, is delighted to be back.

She told us: I must have had about 70 clients wanting booked in when we had to go into lockdown.

Obviously we have had to change how we work, which isnt easy when you are a small operation like this.

Despite the lay-off in between appointments, Nikkola was overwhelmed at the response from her clientele.

Not only the kind messages of support throughout lockdown, but by talking with their feet.

Exclusive peek inside new East Kilbride shopping development

Thankfully the salon is fully booked until the middle of August with clients desperate to get their unruly locks under control after months of salons being closed.

But the return to work isnt without its challenges and Nikkola admits its been one of the hardest periods she has faced in business.

She added: There is only myself and my assistant and when the business was closed I had nothing business owners, unfortunately, dont get furloughed.

On the positive side of things my phone has been ringing non-stop as people are desperate for a hair cut.

But everything is now in place, we have disposable gowns, towels and aprons, the cleaning regime has increased everything is cleaned and sanitised after every client.

However, all of that takes time which makes the day-to-day running more difficult but it has to be done.

Its harder for us as there is only myself and my assistant.

The new way of working means that, at most, Nikkola can take just two or three clients at a time because of the social distancing that includes the seats at the reception.

She added: Everyone has been really understanding though and I have to thank folk for their support at such a challenging time.

My mum ran the salon before me and we have had our ups and downs for sure.

But these last few months have been the most difficult we have faced and I am just so glad we are back up and running.

A well written sports story or movie features an underdog, disappointment, perseverance and the thrill of victory. Grimes County Machine Pitch All Stars played the role of stars to perfection battling from the losers bracket to win the District 13 Little League All Star Machine Pitch Tournament in Bellville.

A group of players from three machine pitch boys teams in Grimes County were selected to represent the Grimes County Little League All Stars (GCLL) and with just a little over a week of practice represented the league with the best allstar performance in years.

GCLL lost in a hardfought heartbreaker to open tournament play Thursday, July 23, falling to Hempstead 19-18 in an extra-inning battle that lasted nine-innings. The loss sent GCLL into the treacherous waters of the losers bracket.

Our boys faced adversity in the first game but never gave up, never wavered, kept their heads up, remained calm and fought their way out of the losers bracket, said GCLL coach Wes Male. After falling into the deep end of the losers bracket, GCLL began swimming against the current fighting tirelessly one game at a time toward their ultimate goal of a championship.

GCLL defeated Bellville Black 15-5 Friday, July 24 to earn a Saturday showdown rematch against Hempstead. This time GCLL had revenge on their mind and knocked the little sluggers from Hempstead out of the tournament with a 16-10 victory.

The win over Hempstead on Saturday, July 25, set up a seemingly impossible matchup with previously unbeaten Bellville Red. With GCLL advancing from the losers bracket and one loss already under their belt, and Bellville entering from the winners bracket, it meant GCLL must not only beat Belville but had to double-dip (beat them twice) them to secure a championship.

Although tired from battling to the championship, GCLL continued fighting stroke by stroke upstream and edged out a 12-11 win over Bellville Sunday, July 26 setting up a winner take all game.

In their first doubleheader of the season, GCLL showed relentless effort battling toe-to-toe in the championship bout, and in true underdog fashion knocked off the topranked contender Bellville Red by a score of 13-7.

Our team got better each game and we are so proud of them and their accomplishments, stated Male. This is a great group of boys who have great parents. They buckled in with us on this roller coaster ride. Congratulations boys, you made Grimes County proud earning District 13 All Star Champions.

Male also expressed gratitude to Kyle Warzon owner of 4 Fifteen Construction who sponsored uniforms for the team.

GCLL Machine Pitch All Star team members

Coaches: Wes Male, Joe Young and Keith Zimmerman.

Players: Ryder Sechelski, Jaxon Male, Coney Haynie, Travis Cowthon, Garrett Ham, Evan Zimmerman, Damacio Rodriguez, Sawyer Young, Owen Smith, Carson Small, Tobias Blankenship, Dax Williams, Gracen Currie, Caleb Jackson and Bryce Allen.

Do Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple stifle competition? Not surprisingly, the tech giants' chief executives will tell Congress: absolutely not. The concern that too much power is concentrated in too few companies is unfounded, they plan to testify Wednesday.

Amazon's Jeff Bezos, the world's richest person who will be making his first-ever appearance in front of Congress, will bring in his personal story of being adopted by an immigrant father when he was 4 years old and spending his summers on his grandparents' ranch in Texas, saying his upbringing instilled in him a work ethic that has helped Amazon prosper.

Watch the live stream here beginning at 1 p.m. ET.

Whether members of the House Judiciary Committee's antitrust subcommittee buy these arguments over the course of what is set to be an hourslong spectacle is another matter.

The anything-goes format will likely divert the hearing away from antitrust and delve into issues like perceived anti-conservative bias on social media platforms, a common Republican refrain. And Democrats, often raising concern about foreign election meddling, may inquire about possible efforts to influence the vote online ahead of the November election.

More on-topic probing could involve issues like acquisitions that have grown the reach of Big Tech.

For instance, Facebook has acquired nearly 90 companies, including Instagram, WhatsApp and more recently, Giphy, a tool for creating animated images.

How ever it goes, one thing is certain: It will be a day for the history books.

After enjoying more than a decade virtually free of federal regulation, House lawmakers are expected to make the case that it's time for the technology behemoths to be held to account.

The hearing caps a more than year-long House investigation into the Big Tech companies, which has probed whether the industry leaders box out competition, discourage innovation and pose larger threats to society and American democracy.

If Washington can keep the bipartisan focus on Silicon Valley, the hearing could set the stage for historic regulations, but the tech CEOs will be making the case to lawmakers that laws aimed at reining in the scale and power of each company are not necessary, contending that competition among rivals has not been squashed and that consumers have benefited from the technology sector's success.

"You earn trust slowly, over time, by doing hard things well delivering on time; offering everyday low prices; making promises and keeping them; making principled decisions, even when they're unpopular," Bezos will tell the subcommittee.

Unpopular among the four tech giants: the argument that the power each company has amassed over the years is being abused and needs to be held accountable by Washington.

The complete guide to going red – summer’s must-have hair shade – harpersbazaar.com

Whether it's the way that auburn hair gleams in the sunshine, a need to experiment after months without a hair colour appointment, or classic beauties such as Julianne Moore that are inspiring us, red is tipped to be this season's go-to shade. In fact, searches for red hair have risen by 100 per cent on Google and there's a spectrum of shades to inspire you from strawberry blondes to rich berry hues.

So what do you need to know before switching up your hair colour? We spoke to the celebrity hair colourist Josh Wood and hairstylist Dionne Smith to get their advice for transforming your tresses.

"Red is the colour of the moment, with the likes of Kim Kardashian opting for a gorgeous cherry-red," says Smith. "Going red is a fun update to hair and, while it can take a little maintenance, red tones are sure to turn heads."

"I think people want to have fun this season and the most sophisticated way to experiment with colour is red," agrees Wood. "It's such a strong image and I think it gives people confidence, while also allowing them to express their personality. When I'm creating red for the catwalk, generally the images are of very strong, powerful women. I really do believe that red can transform anyone."

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

"There is definitely a red for every skin tone," says Smith, "but when choosing the right red shade for you, dont just think about vibrancy, think about undertones," advises Smith.

"You need to think about the tone of the shade - either cool or warm - to match your skin," agrees Wood. Generally speaking, more full skin tones suit brighter and bolder colours, so:

Finding your exact shade can be quite tricky, so it's helpful to look online at images of individuals with your skin and eye colour, in order to get an idea of what the colour might look like on you. A consultation with your hairstylist a must whenever dyeing your hair will also help guide you in the right direction.

For a permanent hair transformation, you'll get the best results in a salon, but if you love the idea of embracing the red hair colour trend without the commitment, why not experiment with a semi-permanent finish you can achieve at home.

"If you want to try before you buy and have light brown or blonde hair, then a semi-permanent colour will last for a few weeks and can give you a chance to see if the shade works for you," says Smith. "For darker hair colours and afro hair types, I would suggest trying a wig or extensions for a quick way to get the look before you head to your stylist."

"Playing around with something that doesn't last very long is a way to try a new persona, so don't be afraid to be bold," continues Wood. "Our Josh Wood Glosses offer semi-permanent reds that only last for six shampoos, so you can have fun experimenting," whether you want a copper, cherry, rose or berry tone.

A fresh take on the strawberry-blonde look, this shade utilises faded copper and apricot tones to create a warm, golden version of red.

The classic bright red. For anyone who wants to stand out from the crowd.

Rose Brown

Brilliant for natural brunettes or anyone with balayage. The addition of rosy shades through the lengths lifts dark hair and is especially pretty in the summer, as the colour is more noticeable as the sun touches it.

Berry

Deep red and wine-inspired shades are a popular way to go a little bolder with your colour without needing to go too bright.

The vibrancy of your colour doesn't just depend on the shade you choose: your current hair colour matters, too.

"The lighter you are, all the way up to bleach, the brighter the result you will get, while the darker the starting point, the less red tone you will see," says Wood. "What's great though, is if you are dark but have some balayage or natural highlights, the red pigments will be brighter on the lighter parts of your hair."

Another element to keep in mind is how much maintenance you are willing to undertake. While a dedicated at-home routine can minimise colour fade, a brighter or more intense red will lose potency over time and thus requires more regular trips to a salon or investment in at-home colour top ups.

"Maintaining a red is pretty easy at home," confirms Wood. "Gloss products and semi-permanent solutions help you to top up the tone. I designed my glosses to use between colouring at home or in the salon, to refresh the vibrancy and condition of your hair colour so it can truly shine."

Aside from topping up your colour, you can keep it from fading in the first place by avoiding overly stripping shampoos and choosing formulas designed specifically for red coloured hair, such as John Frieda and Wella's ranges.

Keeping your hair hydrated is important, too. "Once you have gone red, keep hair vibrant and nourished with a weekly treatment," says Smith. "I recommend using a hair oil as a mask to really nourish red hair, such as Olew's Original Oil. It's is an all-natural nourishing and hydrating hair oil that is packed with antioxidants to deeply hydrate hair."

L.A. Dodgers’ Joe Kelly Fires at Houston Astros Players’ Heads Over ’17 Cheating – TMZ

L.A. Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly was a man out for REVENGE on Tuesday -- firing baseballs at the cheating ass Houston Astros ... and nearly igniting a brawl in the process.

He talked trash to the players. He threw a 96 MPH fastball at Alex Bregman's head. And, mocked several players from the mound.

He also struck out Carlos Correa and shouted, "Nice swing, bitch!"

It was all part of a highly anticipated matchup between the Dodgers and the Astros -- the first time the teams had played since an MLB investigation revealed Houston had cheated their faces off during the 2017 season.

Kelly wasn't on the Dodgers during that 2017 World Series run -- but he was on the Boston Red Sox, which had been eliminated by the Astros in the ALCS earlier that year.

So, yeah ... a bunch of people had some serious axes to grind.

Fast forward to Tuesday when Kelly took the mound in the 6th inning of L.A.'s game against Houston in Texas ... it didn't take long for him to appear to try to exact some revenge.

After getting Jose Altuve out ... Kelly got down 3-0 in a count to Bregman -- and then fired a 96 MPH fastball that missed the star 3rd baseman's head by inches.

Just two batters later ... Kelly threw a breaking ball that nearly clipped Correa in the back of the head as well!!

Neither player was happy with the throws ... and after Kelly struck out Correa a pitch or two later -- Kelly mocked Carlos on his way off the mound.

Joe made crying faces at the shortstop, then appeared to yell, "You gotta cheat to hit!" and other cuss words ... and that's when both benches cleared and almost got into an all-out brawl!!

Cooler heads ultimately prevailed ... but Astros manager Dusty Baker was PISSED at Kelly after the game, saying his actions put Bregman and Correa's careers in danger.

"When you throw a 3-0 fastball over a guy's head, now you're flirting with ending his career," Baker said. "And then a couple other guys, balls were close. And then what really enraged everybody is when he told Carlos when he struck him out, he told him, 'Nice swing, bitch.'"

For their part, Kelly and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts both said there wasn't any intent behind the pitches.

But, with Correa and Bregman being the two most famous players associated with the Astros' sign-stealing, trash can banging scandal that perhaps cost the Dodgers a World Series ring in '17 ... it's not hard to see through this one.

L.A. ended up winning 5-2, by the way ... but there's still another game left in the series Wednesday night.

Getcha popcorn ready!!!

COVID-19 Vaccine Candidate Heads To Widespread Testing In U.S. – Red River Radio

The COVID-19 vaccine candidate made by the U.S. biotech company Moderna and developed in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health starts its final phase of testing Monday.

This phase is called Phase 3 efficacy testing, and it is designed to see if the vaccine actually prevents disease. Up to 30,000 volunteers will be assigned to one of two groups. One group will receive two injections spaced approximately 28 days apart of mRNA-1273, as the vaccine is known. The other group will receive an injection containing only salt water. Neither the volunteer nor the person administering the injection will know what's in the syringe in order to avoid bias in favor of one outcome or another. Of course, people running the trial will know who is getting what.

Researchers will monitor both groups to see who, if anyone, gets sick. Organizers of the trial say there will have to only be approximately 150 cases of COVID-19 among study participants to say with confidence that the vaccine is actually preventing disease. How long it takes to reach that number, and how many participants will have to be enrolled in the study, is an open question. It depends in part on how much the virus is circulating in the communities where the trial takes place. It could take as many as 30,000 volunteers to get the answer, and the entire process will probably take months.

According to a list maintained by the World Health Organization, there are four other vaccine candidates to reach Phase 3 testing: three made by Chinese entities and one by a collaboration between the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca.

The Moderna vaccine is a new kind of vaccine based on the genetic material that makes up the coronavirus. Snippets of RNA (a chemical cousin of DNA) are enclosed in a nano-capsule and injected into someone's arm. The RNA contains instructions to make a protein found of the outer surface of the coronavirus. This protein is what stimulates the immune system to make antibodies against the virus. The idea is that if this harmless protein in the vaccine can generate those antibodies, then if the vaccinated individual is exposed to the virus, their immune system will be able to fight it off.

The Phase 3 trail will take place at 89 centers around the United States. To find out more or join the study, go to ClinicalTrials.gov and search identifier NCT04470427, or go to https://www.coronaviruspreventionnetwork.org/.

OOIDA’s tour trailer heads to Bloomington, Ill. – Land Line – Land Line Media

The next scheduled stop for OOIDAs tour trailer is in Bloomington, Ill., which is close to Normal and home of a product called beers best friend.

The Spirit of the American Trucker is scheduled to be at the Bloomington TA Travel Center on July 28-30. It is at Exit 160 from I-55/I-74 at the Route 9 junction.

Bloomington is 130 miles southwest of Chicago. Peoria, Ill., is 40 miles west.

The Bloomington TA has 160 parking spots for semis. The Country Pride full-service restaurant is temporarily closed, according to the TA & Petro website.

The Bloomington TA is dedicated to Gary Buchs, who was named a Citizen Driver in 2015.The Citizen Driver Award recognizes professional drivers who earn public respect for the trucking industry through good citizenship, community involvement, health and wellness outreach, and leadership.

At the time, he had logged 2.25 million crash-free miles. He was awarded the Citizen Driver honor after stopping to help at a car collision, rescuing a woman in the vehicle by prying the car door open to pull her out. He has won at least 10 Landstar Star of Quality commendations and a Landstar Platinum Star.

There is a good chance that a Bloomington-made product is available at truck stops and in taverns you may have visited. Beer Nuts, bags of salty-sweet peanuts, are manufactured and packaged in Bloomington.

A go-getter named Edward Shirk took over a confectionary story in downtown Bloomington in 1937. One of the products was called Redskins, which were glazed peanuts with their red skins intact. Shirk began marketing them to taverns and liquor stores and changed the product name to Beer Nuts in 1953, according to a company history online.

Heres a video on the history and production of Beer Nuts.

The Bloomington metropolitan area includes adjacent neighboring city Normal. It is home to Illinois State University, which used to be known as Illinois State Normal University. In 1867 the town was incorporated Normal, its name taken from the college. Normal schools or colleges trained teachers.

Normal was incorporated as a dry town, and intoxicating drinks were prohibited until the early 1970s, according to town history.

If you see OOIDAs tour trailer, stop by and say hello to Jon Osburn, its skipper. He enjoys visiting about the Associations activities and current issues. He usually has copies of Land Line Magazine to hand out. You can join or renew your OOIDA membership for $10 off the regular price there. Free face masks are available at The Spirit. You also can get vouchers for flu, shingles and pneumonia vaccines from Jon.
