Diabetic Retinopathy - Health Tips
Michael D. DeLisi, MD, Chairman of Family Medicine, St. Jospeh #39;s Regional Medical Center, is here to present useful health information related to diabetes. Diabetes is the leading cause of visual problems and blindness in the United States. Routine screening for retinopathy is recommended for patients with diabetes. It has been well researched and reported that early care for diabetic retinopathy saves sight. There are far more diabetics in need of retinopathy screening than there are ophthalmologists to do the required screenings. Most of the screenings do not result in findings requiring further care from an ophthalmologist. We needed to develop processes to accomplish the needed screening in a cost effective way that spares the ophthalmologists for the patients who actually need their care. To address this problem here at St. Joseph #39;s family medicine at Clifton we have been researching the use of a non-mydriatic digital retinal camera to facilitate retinopathy screening for our patients with diabetes. We were fortunate to receive a St. Joseph #39;s Foundation Grant to buy a digital retinal camera two years ago to begin our project. With the outstanding cooperation of one of our ophthalmologists, Dr. Swati Parekh as our principle collaborator, we have screened more than 500 retinas with digital photos. We then analyzed the photos for pathology under a protocol developed in collaboration with Dr. Parekh, total accordance of the readings was the goal. Spain - 11 Million On Verge Of Poverty - Many Now With Mental Health Problems
Eleven and a half million people live on the verge of poverty and social exclusion in Spain. Nearly six million people are unemployed. The economic situation is having a direct impact on people #39;s health. "Gradually I began to notice that I couldn #39;t sleep, constantly was in a bad mood, I had to take tranquilizers and antidepressants", says Gloria Garcia, who suffers from mental health problems. She was left without a job, without any prospects. For people over 50 there are not many opportunities on the labor market. "The situation is becoming increasingly worse, and to wake up in the morning is very hard for me", says Gloria Garcia. "Unemployment is one of the factors that most affects people #39;s self-esteem and can lead to anxiety, depression and the consumption of alcohol and drugs, which makes people #39;s mental state even worse," says Jeronimo Saiz, President of the Psychiatric Association. Spain is seeing an increase in people suffering from psychological problems and at the same time there are cutbacks in healthcare funding. "We are in a situation which is quite difficult to solve, because at present, psychological and psychiatric examination is more important than ever", says Isidro Perez, a psychologist. These psychological problems are frequently seen among the poor population. "Any stressful situation can strengthen the pathology of mental illness", says Rafael Fernandez Garcia Andrade, psychiatrist in San Carlos Hospital. Complement system has three classification: classical pathway, alternative pathway and lectin pathway. Function of complement system is to opsonize, play a roll in chemotaxis, cell lysis, neutralization and blockade of viruses. We will also discuss the pathologies of the complement system Which associated pathologies? Compliment pathologies include deficiencies or defect of complement factor or cells in involvement. In this video we discuss diseases associated with complement factor defect or deficiencies such as C1, C2-C4, MAC, properdin, factor H and I and compliment over activation such as PNH, IgA disturbances and bacterial effects. Mercy implements pathology barcode system

MASON CITY A new pathology barcode system the first of its kind in Iowa will help track and safeguard patients treated by Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, officials said Tuesday.

The Vantage system, developed by Ventana Medical of Tuscon, Ariz., was unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the centers pathology department.

While Mercy has used barcoding in other areas for years, it marks the first time any hospital in Iowa has used such a system for biopsies, said Medical Laboratory Director Dr. Stephen Goetz.

Goetz said some 18,000 cases require some type of biopsy each year, as well as 110 autopsies that are conducted. That number includes cases processed from its clinics.

In the past, the processing of biopsies was done in batches with several specimens going through each step.

The new system has one specimen going through each step, with barcoding used to ensure the results are attributed to the correct patient.

Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa has never had an incorrect identification on a biopsy, according to a Mercy news release, but the previous system left a greater chance for error.

The barcode, while tiny in size, provides lots of information, Goetz said. The barcoding allows staff to track the biopsy, whether it is in the lab, at another facility, or in storage, he said.

Marcia Funk, Histology Laboratory Supervisor, said the barcodes are also embedded with the name of each person handling the slide.

We will know who has seen it and why, she said.
