ESL One Cologne 2020 to be played online with new format – Dexerto

Tournament organizers ESL have announced that they will be hosting their highly anticipated 2020 ESL One Cologne CS:GO event online, following global travel restrictions.

ESL Cologne is an annual CS:GO competition that features top teams from around the world, often considered one of the biggest events of the year, outside of the Majors.

However, ESL announced, in a blog post, that they would be switching up the format for the tournament in 2020, following concerns around global travel leading up to the event.

"After a thorough evaluation weve concluded that ESL One Cologne 2020 powered by Intel will transition to an Online Tournament." the tournament organizer revealed, "The decision was made after extensive research and understanding of global travel regulations and individual national guidelines."

They also revealed that they would be splitting the event into four separate regions, Europe, North America, Oceania, and Asia, allowing each of the teams to compete from home.

"The teams were determined based on a regionalized version of the original ESL One Cologne qualification rule set: via the ESL Pro Tour ranking, ESL Pro Tour Challenger events, and the ESL World Ranking."

The $500,000 prize pool has also been proportionally split into each of the regions with Asia and Oceania, who are only fielding 4 teams each, fighting for a $20,000 prize compared to the $325,000 for Europe's top 16.

ESL One Cologne which was originally expected to run from July 6-12, however, it is now scheduled to span from August 18-30 after moving to an online format.

Although the likes of Vitality, BIG, and Evil Geniuses have all been confirmed, there are still plenty of teams to be invited for each of these regional competitions, with more teams expected to receive an invite on July 20.

ESL is also playing host to the next CS:GO Major in Rio, which has been delayed until November following similar concerns regarding the ongoing health crisis.

Perforated metal panels strengthen green wall and brand at new ASICS Oceania HQ – Architecture and Design

Perforated metal panels from Arrow Metal are not only making a strong branding statement for the new ASICS Oceania headquarters in Sydney but have also formed the basis for a vertical garden at the property.

Designed by architects Reid Campbell, SBA, Siren Design and UK-based WDC, the impressive hub of sports giant ASICS at Sydney Business Park, Marsden Park spans a massive 57,000 square metres.

Arrow Metals aluminium perforated sheets provided the base for ASICS green wall logo installation. Tasked with creating perforated sheets to become the perfect planter for the green wall, the Arrow Metal team used 3mm aluminium to fabricate 36 perforated panels.

Perforated metal delivers multiple benefits over common living wall materials such as mesh in green wall and vertical garden installations:

Customised perforations

ASICS architects chose a classic, standard perforation style, with bespoke tweaks to suit the specific needs of a green wall. Each panel featured a customised perforation of 70mm diameter round holes, with a pitch of 87mm. It was based on Arrow Metals popular P287 perforation, but with the holes punched closer together.

Customised growing

The climbing plants below the installed panels will naturally grow into the carefully-positioned holes of the aluminium perforated sheet, eventually circling the ASICS logo at the centre.

Stable and strong

Perforated metal is durable, strong and very stable, making it perfect for a green wall base installation.

Improved aesthetics

Each panel created for the ASICS project is finished in a Windspray colour, in keeping with the contemporary building envelope. Perforated metal can be customised with colours and effects for better aesthetics than traditional mesh.

Oceania esports team Dire Wolves has revealed its new management team as part of a series of announcements this week that will include a rebrand and entry into new games. Jason Spiller assumes the role as owner of the organization, after firm Guinevere Capital and other backers divested their interest earlier this year, in line with Riot Games rules on multi-team ownership in League of Legends esports.

Dave Harris, managing director of Guinevere Capital, told The Esports Observer that while his company will continue its team business in Europe with Excel Esports and the London Spitfire, in Oceania it transitioned to a service provider role through agency work and via its Esports High Performance Centers.

The key has been to find people that have that non-endemic esport experience, as well as endemic experience, he said. That is like gold dust in this industry, and its great that its finally worked with Dire Wolves, with Jason and his backers able to step in.

Spiller has a 15-year tenure in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ)s gaming and esports scene. From 2015-17 he was lead for a number of categories for Microsoft in the region, including first-party Xbox titles and Halo esports events, before joining Omen by HP for two years, most recently as marketing manager for gaming, esports, and immersive technologies.

Connecting with Harris through the Esports Games Association Australia (EGAA), Spiller saw an opportunity to support ANZ esports as a whole, particularly his own country of New Zealand. Im very passionate about supporting Kiwis, especially because there are a great amount of New Zealanders that I think can make a big impact on the world, and the Dire Wolves seem to be the perfect way to try and continue doing that, he said.

On the performance side, Craig Nimmo joins as general manager, returning to esports after a three year IT management tenure with Australian supermarket chain Coles. I met him years ago when he was commentating in APAC and ANZ for Call of Duty 4, and Battlefield, Spiller said. Teaonui Tehau invited for trial in the Netherlands – Football in Oceania

Teaonui Tehaus dream to play in Europe might become reality. The record-breaking striker of Tahitian football club AS Venus has been officially invited for a trial at a semi-professional football club in The Netherlands competing in the 3rd national league. However he has to hurry to get his funds ready in order to not miss this chance of a lifetime. Pre-season in the Dutch top leagues started on the 7th of July but the club is yet waiting the trial confirmation by Tehau.

His talent was noticed by Dutchman Paul Driessen during the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa. Driessen, a registered intermediary at the Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) has been active in Oceania since 2010 with the Netherlands Oceania Support Foundation. He visited the tournament in a double role as intermediary.

Our goal has always been to build a solid bridge between Oceania and Europe for football. The foundation recruits coaches for national football federations in Oceania and organises training camps in The Netherlands for national football teams. On the other hand, I am also active as scout for talent who dream of playing in Europe, Driessen said in a press release.

Last February I visited AS Venus in Tahiti. I wanted to see three national team players competing in real time twice. I was impressed about the overall quality of talent within the club and had a fruitful conversation with the club board and several players. So I expressed my ambition to help them in fulfilling their dream: Having a football career in Europe.

Driessen has been promoting the Tahiti national team players in The Netherlands in the past months. Especially Teaonui Tehau, who attracted a lot of attention in The Netherlands due to his impressive scoring ability.

Teaonui and I had regular contact on the development via Facebook Messenger over the past month. He told me that it is his dream to play in Europe, even if its just for one season, Driessen said.

Teaonui received an official invitation letter from 3rd national league club Kozakken Boys. This club is semi-professional according to Dutch standards and holds a very rich club culture and history.

The first team is a mixture of cultures which makes it easy for someone from Tahiti to get integrated. The club is located in a town called Werkendam and is driven by many professionals and fans from a devoted community. The stadium has reached an audience of 5,000 visitors during national league cup matches so there is a great fanbase there as well. Kozakken Boys delivers several football players to the professional leagues every year. This is a great hub for Teoanui to become a full-professional football player.

Teaonui will be part of a team consisting many former professional football players. One of those players is former Real Madrid player Royston Drenthe.

Teaonui can learn a lot from these players. It is essential that he comes to The Netherlands while he is still 27 years old.

Most professional football clubs in The Netherlands turned down my offer as they regarded him as too old. The transfer value of a 27-year old player is simply lower than of a 21-year old player. But I believe in him and so does Kozakken Boys. We have to grab this opportunity with both hands. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Now or never. There is no second chance for Teaonui because he will be 29 at the start of next years season. Another major reason to take this opportunity is that Teaonui will pave the way for other talent from Tahiti in the future. I expect that more invitations will follow in the future if he succeeds.

He can be an eye opener for professional clubs in The Netherlands as a proof that Tahiti contains a great source of talent. Having national team players play at a professional senior level would make the Tahiti national team much stronger. Great examples in this development strategies are New Zealand and New Caledonia with quite a number of internationals playing abroad, Driessen said.

Teaonui is invited for a two-week trial and is expected to arrive in The Netherlands on the 20th of July. There are four matches scheduled during his trial.

The invitation is there. The only thing he has to do is to get his funds ready to book his flight and accommodation. This should happen within 5 days from now to avoid the inviting club moving on to another invitation, Driessen said.

Global electronic waste up 21% in five years, and recycling isn’t keeping up – The Conversation UK

Each year, the total amount of electric and electronic equipment the world uses grows by 2.5 million tonnes. Phones, radios, toys, laptops if it has a power or battery supply its likely to join a growing mountain of e-waste after use.

In 2019 alone, the world generated 53.6 million tonnes of e-waste. Thats about 7.3 kilograms per person and equivalent in weight to 350 cruise ships. Asia produced the lions share 24.9 million tonnes followed by the Americas (13.1 million tonnes) and Europe (12 million tonnes), while Africa and Oceania generated 2.9 and 0.7 million tonnes respectively.

By 2030, the global total is likely to swell to 74.7 million tonnes, almost a doubling of the annual amount of new e-waste in just 16 years. This makes it the worlds fastest growing domestic waste stream, fuelled mainly by more people buying electronic products with shorter life cycles and fewer options for repair.

These products can help improve living standards, and its good that more and more people can afford them. But growing global demand is outpacing our capacity to recycle or dispose of electronic products safely. Once theyre obsolete and discarded, these products can end up accumulating in the environment, polluting habitats and harming people and wildlife.

Only 17.4% of 2019s e-waste was formally collected and recycled. Since 2014, the amount of recycled e-waste has only grown by 1.8 million tonnes each year. The total amount of e-waste generated increased by 9.2 million tonnes over the same period. At the same time, the amount of undocumented e-waste is increasing.

In new research, we found that Europe has the highest collection and recycling rate, covering about 42.5% of the total e-waste generated in 2019. Asia ranked second at 11.7%, the Americas and Oceania were similar at 9.4% and 8.8%, and Africa had the lowest rate at 0.9%. What happened with the rest (82.6%) of the worlds e-waste generated in 2019 isnt clear.

In high income countries, around 8% of e-waste is thought to be discarded in waste bins, while 7%-20% is exported. In lower income countries, the picture is less clear, as e-waste is mostly managed informally.

Without a reliable system of waste management, toxic substances contained in e-waste, such as mercury, brominated flame retardants, chlorofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons, are more likely to be released into the environment and harm the people who live, work and play in e-waste scrapyards.

Mercury is used in computer monitors and fluorescent lighting, but exposure to it can cause brain damage. We estimated that about 50 tonnes of mercury is contained in these undocumented flows of e-waste that end up in the environment each year.

E-waste doesnt just pose a health risk though. It also contributes directly to global warming. Dumped temperature-exchange equipment, found in fridges and air conditioners, can slowly release greenhouse gases. About 98 million tonnes are thought to leak from scrapyards each year, equivalent to 0.3% of global emissions from the energy sector.

Aside from toxins, e-waste also contains precious metals and useful raw materials, such as gold, silver, copper and platinum. The total value of all this discarded as e-waste in 2019 has been conservatively valued at US$57 billion (45 billion) a sum greater than the GDP of most countries.

But since only 17.4% of 2019s e-waste was collected and recycled, just US$10 billion of this was recovered in an environmentally responsible way. Only 4 million tonnes of raw materials was made available for recycling.

Thankfully, the world is slowly waking up to the scale of this problem. As of the end of 2019, 78 countries, covering 71% of the worlds population, either had a policy for managing e-waste or were putting regulation in place an increase of 5% from 2017. But in many of these countries, policies still arent legally binding and regulation isnt enforced.

As researchers, well continue to monitor the worlds e-waste to support the creation of a circular economy and sustainable societies. We hope that our efforts to track this growing problem can spur governments to act with an urgency that reflects the scale of the challenge, with laws and enforcement that can drastically increase the proportion of e-waste thats recycled safely.
