Oceania Healthcares (NZSE:OCA) Earnings Are Growing But Is There More To The Story? – Simply Wall St

It might be old fashioned, but we really like to invest in companies that make a profit, each and every year. That said, the current statutory profit is not always a good guide to a companys underlying profitability. Today well focus on whether this years statutory profits are a good guide to understanding Oceania Healthcare (NZSE:OCA).

Its good to see that over the last twelve months Oceania Healthcare made a profit of NZ$59.0m on revenue of NZ$190.7m. Happily, it has grown both its profit and revenue over the last three years, as you can see in the chart below.

See our latest analysis for Oceania Healthcare

Not all profits are equal, and we can learn more about the nature of a companys past profitability by diving deeper into the financial statements. This article will focus on the impact unusual items have had on Oceania Healthcares statutory earnings. That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. Luckily, you can click here to see an interactive graph depicting future profitability, based on their estimates.

Importantly, our data indicates that Oceania Healthcares profit received a boost of NZ$56m in unusual items, over the last year. While its always nice to have higher profit, a large contribution from unusual items sometimes dampens our enthusiasm. We ran the numbers on most publicly listed companies worldwide, and its very common for unusual items to be once-off in nature. And, after all, thats exactly what the accounting terminology implies. We can see that Oceania Healthcares positive unusual items were quite significant relative to its profit in the year to November 2019. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.

As previously mentioned, Oceania Healthcares large boost from unusual items wont be there indefinitely, so its statutory earnings are probably a poor guide to its underlying profitability. For this reason, we think that Oceania Healthcares statutory profits may be a bad guide to its underlying earnings power, and might give investors an overly positive impression of the company. The good news is that, its earnings per share increased by 65% in the last year. Of course, weve only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors. Keep in mind, when it comes to analysing a stock its worth noting the risks involved. At Simply Wall St, we found 4 warning signs for Oceania Healthcare and we think they deserve your attention.

Today weve zoomed in on a single data point to better understand the nature of Oceania Healthcares profit. But there are plenty of other ways to inform your opinion of a company. For example, many people consider a high return on equity as an indication of favorable business economics, while others like to follow the money and search out stocks that insiders are buying. While it might take a little research on your behalf, you may find this free collection of companies boasting high return on equity, or this list of stocks that insiders are buying to be useful.

What Is Oceania? – WorldAtlas.com

Where Is Oceania?

The region of Oceania consists of many islands in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Oceania is further divided into the three subregions of Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia. The term Oceania is often used to denote a continent which comprises of Australia and the nearby islands or as a synonym for Australasian ecozone or the Pacific ecozone. As an ecological zone, it includes Micronesia, Polynesia (excluding New Zealand), and Fiji. New Zealand along with other islands constitutes the separate Australasian ecozone. The term Oceania was coined by Conrad Malte-Brun in 1812 with the inhabitants of the region known as the Oceanians.

Oceania initially consisted of land in the Pacific Ocean which stretched from the Strait of Malacca to the coast of the America. The area is made up of four regions including Polynesia, Micronesia, Melanesia, and Malaysia. Parts of the three geological subregions are today part of the term Oceania. Oceania extends to Sumatra, Bonin Island, Hawaiian Island, Rupa Nui Island, and Macquarie Island. The islands at the geographical ends of the area include Bonin, a territory of Japan, Hawaii, a territory of the US, and Easter Island which belongs to Chile. Also, a relatively smaller geographic area includes Indonesian Papua Guinea on the Australian continent but excludes the land on the Sunda Plate. Biogeographically, the region is another name for either the Australasian ecozone or the Pacific ecozone. The region of Oceania is one of the 8 terrestrial ecological zones which form the major ecoregions of the earth. The ecozone covers Micronesia, Fiji, and Polynesia (except New Zealand). Geopolitically, the term Oceania is used by the UN, the International Olympic Committee, and several atlases to include Australia and other Pacific nations such as Papua New Guinea. A wide definition of the region includes the region between Asia and the Americas.

Oceania is divided into the three sub-regions of Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia. Melanesia extends from New Guinea Island to the Arafura Sea and Fiji. Melanesia region includes four countries: Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Solomon Island, and Vanuatu. It also includes New Caledonia which is a collective of France and the Western New Guinea regions of Indonesia. The islands of Melanesia often have both European and Indigenous names, which results in confusion.

Micronesia consists of several small islands located on the western part of the Pacific Ocean who are shared culturally by Polynesia and Melanesia. Micronesia is politically divided among independent states including three US territories. The islands of Micronesia are estimated to number 2,100, covering a total area of about 1,000 square miles. The largest island, Guam, covers about 225 square miles. Micronesia has four major island groups: Caroline, Gilbert, Mariana, and Marshall.

Polynesia constitutes over 1,000 islands distributed over the central and Southern parts of the Pacific Ocean. The majority of the islands are composed of volcanic islands built by hotspots. Polynesia consists of a largely sank continent of Zealandia which covers a total area of approximately 118,000 square miles with the largest island, New Zealand, Covering approximately 103,000 square miles. Polynesia is defined by the Polynesian Triangle which is drawn by connecting of three islands of Easter Island, Hawaiian Island, and New Zealand.

The history of Oceania is built on that of Australia and other Pacific Islands. The history is also built on the history of the three sub-regions of Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia. The region was explored for the first time by the Europeans in the 16th century. Portuguese explorers reached Moluccas, Timor, Tanimbar Island and some parts of the Carolina Island and New Papua Guinea between 1512 and 1525. Between 1527 and 1595, several large Spanish expeditions explored the Pacific Ocean resulting in the discovery of the Marshall Island and Palau on the northern Pacific. The Spanish explorers discovered the Pitcairn and Vanuatu archipelagos in the 17th century. A colony of Guam was then discovered by the Spanish in 1668 and used as a harbor and stop-over for the west-bound vessels. Abel Tasman was the first to reach Tasmania and New Zealand and mapped a substantial portion of Australia, New Zealand, Tonga, and Fiji. James Cook became the second European explorer to visit New Zealand 125 years after Tasman and in 1778 he became the first European first to visit the island of Hawaii.

Oceania was colonized by Europeans and the Americans. Between 1788 and 1872, the British established several colonies including Australia, New Zealand, and Fuji with much of Oceania becoming a British territory. In the 19th century, Kiribati and Tuvalu Islands also came under the British sphere. Tahiti and Tahuata were declared French protectorates in 1842. The French also took over the Tuamotu Archipelago belonging to the Pomare Dynasty in the 1980s. The Netherlands claimed mainly the western half of Oceania. The Dutch government established its first posts in 1898 and 1902 to the South of the border with British New Guinea. Germany established its colony and a trading station on Jaluit and Ebon islands to promote the copra trade. The US expanded into the Pacific in 1857 by taking over Baker and Howland Islands. Hawaii became part of the US in 1898. The Japanese took control of the Marshall Island at the beginning of the World War I. Japan also colonized several Oceanic colonies.

The idea of what constitutes Oceania varies from time to time. The region is defined in several geopolitical and geographic ways. The geopolitical concept used by bodies such as the United Nations, Olympic Committee, and other atlases includes Australia and other Pacific Nations such as Papua New Guinea in their definition of Oceania. The Oceania region has a population 34.7 million people including the population of Australia and 13.4 million people excluding the mainland Australia. Papua New Guinea is the most populated island followed by New Zealand and Hawaii with a population of 5.9 million, 4.2 million, and 1.4 million respectively. Pitcairn Island is the least populated island with only 48 people. Christianity is the major religion within Oceania although there are some other religions including Hindu, Islam, Buddhism, and Indigenous beliefs.

Pat Shingleton: "Oceania and Rhubarb…" – WBRZ

We say goodbye to April and rewind to some interesting weather events on this date. Oceania are land areas that are not a part of a continent. On this date in 1912 a temperature of 108 degrees was recorded at Tuguegarao, Philippines for Oceanias all-time recorded high. In 1898 the latest-in-the-season measureable snowfall for Washington, D.C. was noted along with a record low of 33 degrees. Also in D.C. on April 30, 1938, meteorologists attending the American Geophysical Union reported baseball sized hail that whitened the ground setting a record hail event. Here's another from 1994 when thunderstorm winds blew a power line onto a fence in Franklin County, PA, electrocuting 15 cows and illuminating the fence like a toaster. In closing, backyard gardens are a couple of months away from a "full" harvest. In western Pennsylvania, my grandfather would turn-over the garden with a spade or shovel until he was convinced to let Mr. Hollenbeck disc it up with his tractor. My mom looked forward to one of the first crops of the season - rhubarb. After that, its leaf lettuce, beans, tomatoes and sweet corn that should be knee high by the Fourth of July. At this time of the year, she would remove ground cover from her rhubarb, uncovering quite a crop. There was so much rhubarb that the produce manager at the local Giant Eagle gave her six bucks per pound. More importantly, her rhubarb pie with strawberries was the absolute best and greatly missed...

Tales of love and loss: people from Oceania share their ‘extinction stories’ – The Guardian

The first time poet Craig Santos Perez encountered a bird native to his homeland of Guam it was in a cage at San Diego zoo.

Growing up on Guam in the 1980s and 90s, Perez, a native Chamorro, had learned about the islands lost birds at school. Children studied pictures and listened to audio recordings of their calls but by then, the islands forests were silent.

Of Guams original 12 species of forest birds, ten had been eaten to extinction by the invasive brown tree snake. Just two narrowly escaped its jaws: the Guam rail and an endemic subspecies of the Micronesian kingfisher, which the Chamorro call sihek.

In the late 1980s, the last siheks were taken off the island to be reared in captive breeding programmes at zoos on the American mainland. Though there are now plans to release some on Guam, they are still considered extinct in the wild.

That day at the zoo, Perez finally came face to face with a real-life sihek, its gold-and-turquoise feathers shining behind the bars. It was very profound, very touching I talked to it, and started crying, he says.

To Perez, the birds fate echoed that of his people: San Diego is home to the largest diaspora of Chamorros outside of Guam. For many years, Perez was one of them. We migrate to survive and to have better opportunities, but at the same time, were far from home, were in a new situation, and it can be very traumatic for the sihek as well as the people.

A poem Perez wrote about the sihek is among those featured on the Living Archive, a new multimedia web platform that provides a space for people from Oceania to tell their extinction stories.

When a species goes extinct, so much is lost, says Perez, who is now an associate professor of English at the University of Hawaii. Not only from the environment and the ecosystem, but culturally as well. We lose our cultural connection to these important species, and we lose the deep meaning that they added to our lives.

The site is the brainchild of Thom van Dooren, an Australian environmental philosopher at the University of Sydney. He hopes it will be a way of creating space for others especially the Pacifics indigenous peoples, but anyone is welcome to contribute to share their tales of love and loss. A storytelling competition will be held later in the year.

As the sixth great extinction gathers pace, stories are more important than ever, van Dooren says. Focusing on stories is about moving away from the simple listing of endangered species.

Multiplying voices and diverse perspectives from around the world helps us to see the significance of extinction as it actually touches down in particular lives and places.

In Indonesias West Papua province, it is the disappearance of the sago palm that is causing heartbreak for the indigenous Marind people. To the Marind, the plant is of central significance for both subsistence and cosmology, but Papua is the new oil palm frontier, and as plantations spread across the landscape, groves of sago are being destroyed.

Even though the communities I work with are facing all kinds of adverse social impacts from this deforestation, whenever I asked them what the worst impact was, they would invariably tell me that oil palm kills the sago, says Sophie Chao, an anthropologist from the University of Sydney who has spent a decade living alongside the Marind.

They would almost place the fate of this tree before their own lives it was the threat to the sago, this nourishing, life-giving plant, that they considered to be the most dramatic rupture caused by deforestation and oil-palm expansion.

Together with members of the Marind community, Chao co-wrote an extinction story about sago for the Living Archive. It includes a translation of a song sung to the plant by a Marind elder: From eating sago, we grew bone; from eating sago, we knew home.

Marind call themselves sago people, and the palm entwines with every aspect of their life, Chao says. Children are said to grow best in the company of sago, and particular palms are named after children that came into the world at the same time. Those babies are often carried in bags made from the fronds of their namesake palm so that, as one young mother told Chao, sago and Marind can follow each others lives.

People also talk about being good food for sago, Chao says. Palm starch nourishes the Marind through their life; but when a person dies, they must be buried in a sago grove so that their body becomes food for the microorganisms that in turn feed the forests roots.

Now, conventional palm oil companies clear-cut the groves, and even sustainable projects can exclude local people from conservation zones, severing the Marinds lifelong connection to their kindred sago.

This plant is culturally meaningful, and it is politically meaningful too, says Chao.

When people are talking about this kind of localised extinction they are also speaking about what they see as their own possible extinction as West Papuan people: the cultural dilution, forced sterilisation, systemic incarceration, and all sorts of other processes that are very much part of the collective identity of West Papuans.

And yet, the whole point of the Living Archive is to avoid the politics of despair, Chao says. As she tells in her extinction story, the Marind themselves have found some hope and resilience in the possibility of reaching a kind of understanding with oil palm: So we cannot deny ourselves hope when they are finding glimmers amid the rubble!

There is power in good stories, Chao says. They might not be able to change the status quo or the structural processes and violence that are causing extinctions, but caring matters. Fleshy stories make us care more.

And theyre more important now than ever, van Dooren says. Covid19 is seen by many as a product of a dysfunctional relationship between humans and animals, and the broader environment too.

Extinction is only part of that puzzle but its a significant part - its a symptom of a broader set of problematic relationships that were being reminded of, not just by Covid 19, but by climate change.

Storytelling is a big part of how we manage those relationships and how we imagine other possibilities.

Navigating Through the Disruption An Oceania Perspective – Global Trade Magazine

Logistics has always been the backbone that silently keeps the world moving but, in this time of uncertainty, its importance has been magnified. COVID-19 has caused disruption globally to all business, in one way or another, and navigating this unprecedented time has highlighted many challenges.

With the evolving landscape, forward planning has become essential to ensure business continuityplans are effective. The need for a recommencement plan for businesses who have temporarily closed and a diversified supply chain for those who operate as essential services is paramount to ensuring business survival for now and success in the future.

The level-4 lockdown of New Zealand has shed some light on the potential challenges that may arise should Australia follow suit.

The Port of Tauranga has announced it is prioritizing the unpacking of essential goods so that the cargo can be handled and transported first. Container loads are able to be delivered to customers sites, if the site is accepting deliveries, however, they cannot be unpacked until the level-4 lockdown period has finished. By doing this, the Port and Government are ensuring the movement of essential goods remains efficient and that essential services can continue operations as usual.

Where a customer site is closed, we see the Port of Wellington waive storage fees for shipments that cannot be transported out of the Port.

We are working with our clients to identify if their goods would be considered essential in the event of a complete lockdown. Wed advise that all companies start considering what sort of goods they have incoming and work with their strategic partner to qualify if their goods would be restricted to such delays if a lockdown were in place in Australia.

Be realistic and confirm whether your goods are considered an essential service and put suitable business measures in place.

If you find that your business cannot be considered essential or it is not viable for you to remain open, youll need to prepare to get back to production quickly once the lockdown is lifted. We recommend that non-essential businesses put a plan in place for the commencement of reopening. It is important to consider whether the recommencement of operations would be staggered, what goods or orders are required to meet the operation recommencement timeline, and are these urgent.

Sometimes the best solution for a businesss supply chain issue is to consider diversifying your shipment options.

For example, it may be beneficial to combine different transport types by flying goods to Singapore before shipping them to Australia rather than just shipping from their location of origin. Combining the two transport types is a faster and cheaper option than purely using air freight in a volatile market.

Businesses may consider using Less than Container Loads (LCL) if they require certain goods for essential service production because it is more cost-effective than their standard full product shipment in a Full Container Load (FCL).

An alternative to air freight, road, and rail in Australia is the Domestic Coastal Shipping Service. After ships have unloaded goods in Eastern Australia, on their return journey to their location of origin, they are able to pick up and deliver domestic goods as they travel West along the coast. We have seen more than a 20% increase for the quarter year-on-year due to the additional pressure on the Australian road and rail market. Rail is at capacity with customers experiencing damage to goods, severe space, and equipment issues as a result whilst the state border closures are posing potential delays for trucking. Many major clients, especially in the food and beverage sector, are switching large volumes to our coastal service as a solution to ensure continuity of business supply.

This domestic shipping service provides a saving of up to 60% over rail and road services. Businesses would need to take into consideration the increased travel time required over other domestic modes of transport and plan this into their supply chain model.

When new challenges arise, it is best for businesses to discuss their options with their strategic partner, who will help navigate this uncertain time.

As businesses struggle to meet the demands of this new normal, C.H. Robinsons trusted advisors around the globe are continually looking for the best solutions to keep your supply chain moving.

"Asia Oceania is expected to lead the market during the forecast period"

Asia Oceania is expected to be the largest electric vehicle market by 2021 due to the rising demand for greener transportation along with several initiatives by private organizations as well as governments. The COVID-19 crisis has caused a slowdown in China's economic growth. Still, the country is in the leading position in terms of the largest EV market, followed by Europe and the US, thus making Asia Oceania the market leader during the forecast period.

The governments of developing economies have recognized the growth potential of the electric vehicle market, and hence, have undertaken different initiatives to attract OEMs to manufacture electric vehicles in domestic markets. For instance, in March 2019, the Indian government announced the second phase of FAME II, which includes setting up 2,700 charging stations in metro cities. Also, the Indian government plans to make it mandatory for cab-hailing companies Ola and Uber to have 40% of their fleet as electric vehicles.

China is also investing heavily in the production of commercial electric vehicles with plans for export. OEMs such as BYD plan to open plants in other parts of the world to manufacture electric buses and electric trucks to meet regional demand. Despite COVID-19 impact, the EV charging infrastructure in Japan is already at an advanced stage; thus, EV sales and electric vehicle charging stations market are expected to grow significantly in the near future. All these factors will drive the electric vehicle market in the Asia Oceania region.

"Charging station market for electric vehicles to grow at the highest CAGR between 2020 and 2021."

The COVID-19 outbreak and the draconian measures deployed in China resulted in extensive disruptions to economic activities, which delivered a hard blow to the economy. Thus, most governments from affected regions have resorted to infrastructure rehabilitation as an economic stimulus method. The electric vehicle charging infrastructure sector has had a minimal impact from COVID-19. For instance, the Chinese government announced stimulation packages toward boosting the development of a network of electric vehicle charging stations. Increased focus on EV charging infrastructure means the sector could see exponential growth in what is already a hot market.

"The supercharging segment is expected to grow at the highest CAGR"

Tesla pioneered the installation of supercharging stations across the world. These super-fast charging stations can charge an EV battery in approximately 30 minutes. However, superchargers are exclusive only to Tesla EVs and do not function on other manufacturer's models. As of January 2019, Tesla had over 1,400 supercharging stations across the world. With the mounting planned production of Tesla EVs that are set to be launched over the next few years, the supercharging segment is expected to grow in tandem.

Some of the major players in the Electric Vehicle And Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Market are Tesla (US), BYD (China), BMW (Germany), Volkswagen (Germany), and Nissan (Japan), LG Chem (S. Korea), Panasonic (S. Korea), and Bosch (Germany) among others.

Oceania: AUD and NZD skewed to the downside ANZ – FXStreet

The AUD and NZD have traded in a relatively orderly fashion thus far, despite panic in other markets. For now, this will remain the case, however, the distribution around that forecast is heavily skewed to the downside, analysts at ANZ Research inform.

Our central forecast that both the AUD and NZD are closing in on their lows remains intact for now. Positioning in both remains relatively short, neither rallied as substantially as stocks or credit; and risk appetite, on our measures, have already moved to panic and close to levels consistent with prior large global shocks.

Absent a more substantial financial shock, these levels should hold, but the current degree of uncertainty makes it prudent to think about where the AUD and NZD may fall should that occur.

Levels for the AUD around $0.58 look possible and for the NZD levels of about $0.55. On the flipside, should the virus become contained in the near term and global growth return to normal levels in the second quarter (a V-shaped recovery), we think that targets for the AUD around our previous forecast of $0.69 and for the NZD of $0.65 remain appropriate.

7-Year-Old Simone Lim Wins At The Pokemon’s Oceania Championships – GameSpot

In a major upset, seven-year-old Simone Lim won the Junior Championship division in the Pokemon Oceania International Championships. Hailing from Singapore, Lim beat out last year's winner, an older and a more experienced trainer, Justin Miranda-Radbord. A relative newcomer, Lim is in the midst of her first competitive season, making her victory all the more impressive.

Her match against Miranda-Radbord was a close one, with the crucial win coming down to the final moments of the third game. In what seemed like the moment Lim might very well lose, Miranda-Radbord eliminated her team down to Tryanitar, while he still had two Pokemon, Rhyperior and Dusclops, remaining.

In those final turns, Lim had to make a choice: She could try to knock out Rhyperior, the attacker, and risk it using Protect, or go for the Dusclops first before it could use any of its support moves. Lim correctly predicted Miranda-Radbord's turn--using Protect on Rhyperior--and used Tryanitar's Crunch to knock out Dusclops. The next turn, Lim used Superpower to knock out the Rhyperior, ending the game. Giving an adorable post-game interview, Lim clutched her Eevee plushie while explaining her gameplay and said that she knew Miranda-Radbord would protect Rhyperior. And though it seemed like she was reading her opponent so clearly and calmly, Lim admitted that she was nervous after her loss in the second round.

Lim also thanked her friends, family, and coach for supporting her. She's earned an invitation to the World Championships in August, so be sure to catch more of her matches then.

Asian Olympic and Paralympic Qualifier Regattas and Training Camp Cancelled, Rescheduled to Take Place in Switzerland and Italy in May – row2k.com

FISA announced this morning that the Asian Olympic Qualifier regatta for the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, scheduled for April 27-30 in Chungju, Korea, has been cancelled in response to the global coronavirus outbreak. Host country South Korea has had 1600 cases of the virus so far, and the WHO has assessed the risk in South Korea to be high.

In addition, numerous airlines have suspended flights to South Korea, and a number of countries are prohibiting travel to or requiring quarantine periods upon returning from South Korea.

The Olympic and Paralympic qualifiers will now be held as part of other qualifiers later in the spring, as follows:

The FISA / Olympic Solidarity training camp scheduled to take place immediately before the South Korean regatta has also been cancelled.

Read the full release below and linked here.

Decision on the FISA Executive Committee related to the impact of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) on World Rowing Events

1. 2020 FISA Asia and Oceania Continental Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta and 2020 Asia and Oceania FISA/Olympic Solidarity Training Camp

Following the outbreak of COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) in China and the high number of cases now reported across Asia and other parts of the world, the FISA Executive Committee has been evaluating the impact of this situation on the upcoming World Rowing events. In this context, the Executive Committee has noted significant difficulties which would affect the staging of the 2020 Asia and Oceania FISA / Olympic Solidarity Training Camp and 2020 FISA Asia and Oceania Continental Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta in Chungju, KOR from 27 to 30 April 2020.

- South Korea has nearly 1,600 cases of the virus as of today and the World Health Organisation has assessed the risk in the country to be high.

- A number of airlines have temporarily suspended air service to South Korea

- A number of countries will not allow residents to travel to South Korea

- A number of countries have imposed mandatory isolation periods for residents returning from travels to South Korea

Considering the situation described above, and after consultation with key stakeholders, it has been agreed that this regatta in Chungju, KOR is cancelled.

The FISA / Olympic Solidarity training camp, planned to take place before the regatta in Chungju, is now also cancelled. Discussions on arranging an alternative training camp or camps are currently taking place with the relevant stakeholders, and will be announced when and if possible.

FISA has looked at alternative options for this event to be staged in the Asian or Oceanian regions. A full evaluation was made of all possible international standard regattas and venues; however, it was deduced that the most pragmatic option is to combine this event with existing qualification events.

Asian and Oceania Continental Paralympic Qualification (PR1M1x and PR1W1x) will now take place as part of the Final Paralympic Qualification Regatta in Gavirate, ITA (8 to 10 May).

Asian and Oceania Continental Olympic Qualification (M1x, W1x, LM2x, LW2x) will now take place as part of the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, SUI (17 to 19 May).

The number of qualification places attributed to the Asia and Oceania Qualification Regattas will not change and will be allocated based on results in the respective Final Qualification Regatta for the relevant boat classes to the eligible NFs/NOCs.

Full details, including updated regatta programmes for both qualification regattas in Gavirate and Lucerne, and updated Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Guides, will be issued by 15 March 2020, following confirmation from the IOC and IPC. Any queries regarding Olympic and Paralympic Qualification should be directed to Cameron.Allen@fisa.org.

2. Final Paralympic Games Classification Opportunities

As a result of the cancellation of the Asia and Oceania Continental Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta, athletes who require classification prior to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games can be classified at one of the following opportunities:

- World Rowing Cup II (Varese, ITA)Classification dates are 29 to 30 April 2020

- Final Paralympic Qualification Regatta (Gavirate, ITA)Classification dates are 6 to 7 May 2020

Requests should be made no later than 16 March 2020 by National Federations to classification@fisa.org.

3. Major Rowing Events in Italy

There are four major events scheduled to take place in Italy during April and May: World Rowing Cup I in Sabaudia (10 to 12 April 2020), European Continental Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta (27 to 29 April 2020) and World Rowing Cup II (1 to 3 May 2020) in Varese, and the Final Paralympic Qualification Regatta (8 to 10 May 2020) in Gavirate.

The situation in Italy is evolving each day with very determined efforts by the government authorities to contain the outbreak in Northern Italy. The situation in the cities of Sabaudia, Varese, and Gavirate is presently considered to be low risk as the outbreak has taken place in other cities in Northern Italy and containment efforts are focused on these cities. We are not aware of any travel restrictions at this time. These FISA events will continue as planned. However, as the situation is evolving quickly, FISA continues to monitor the situation on a daily basis.

4. General Precautions with International Travel and Daily Training

The FISA Sports Medicine Commission has developed an advisory document for rowers and coaches' health and safety during this period of global health uncertainty. This document can be found on our website, http://www.worldrowing.com/.

What We Learned From the 2020 Oceania International Championships – The Game Haus

The region of Oceania has crowned a new International Champion in Marco Hemantha Kaludura Silva. Silvas run throughout this tournament was nothing short of impressive, finishing 12-2 over two days of Swiss and finishing off a tough Top 8 gauntlet with a victory over the defending Oceania Champion, Eduardo Cunha. Some could argue that Silvas journey to the finals was blessed by some fortunate circumstances going his way, especially in his Top 8 match versus Eric Rios (Dracovish was on point with its Rock Slide flinches). Nevertheless, he was able to capitalize on his teams favorable matchups and ultimately claim the title.

With the 2020 formats first International Championship in the books, theres a lot to unpack concerning the state of the metagame. The standard has all but been established at this point, but players have done their best to mix things up in order to improve their matchups. Here are some of our major takeaways from the Oceania International Championships.

Togekiss has cemented itself as the best Pokemon in the current VGC metagame by far. It appeared on 29 of the 32 teams that made it to the second day of Swiss, putting its usage at 90% (but it unfortunately failed to win the entire tournament).

Dynamax has been a blessing for Togekiss, allowing it to be an offensive menace with the ability to abuse Weakness Policy and the speed boosts from Max Airstream. Togekiss supplements this with outstanding offensive coverage and well-rounded stats that allow it to hit solid benchmarks for offense, defense and even speed.

Speaking of defense, the other side of Togekiss game is its bulk and support capability. Togekiss has access to the invaluable Follow Me and a plethora of other amazing support moves which can make its moveset somewhat unpredictable at times. In Oceania, players whipped out moves like Yawn, Helping Hand, Ally Switch with the list going even further. Babiri Berry has been a boon for Galars Fairy-types, and Togekiss is no exception, allowing it to take on some of the metagames most powerful Steel-types like Durant and Duraludon.

Togekiss sheer versatility will likely keep it as the metagames top Pokemon for the entirety of the format, and itll be interesting to see how far players will continue to push its viability.

VGC 2020 has been the year of de-buffing moves, with one of the most popular ones out there being Fake Tears. Fake Tears has made the format a haven for Special Attackers, with many of the formats top offensive threats being Pokemon like Duraludon, Togekiss, Inteleon and the Rotom forms (just to name a few).

Two of the metagames best supportive Pokemon in Whimsicott and Grimmsnarl both have access to this powerful move, and their added utility for providing speed control and further buffs/de-buffs have quickly catapulted their usage to the top.

Dynamax has been a big factor in the rise of moves like Fake Tears, as the extra push in damage makes Max Moves even more likely to score KOs and Dynamaxed Pokemon much easier to KO for non-Dynamaxed Pokemon.

The stat buffing/dropping game will only continue as the 2020 metagame progresses, and combining Fake Tears support with the formats plethora of powerful special attackers will likely persist as one of the top strategies.

What looked to be a strong team archetype at the beginning of the season, Trick Room teams look to have fallen off hard. Not a single one of these hard Trick Room teams made it to Day 2 in Melbourne, with not even Rhyperior or Torkoal managing to make it past the first day of Swiss. What happened?

It seems that players have shifted to more balanced teams with the option for Trick Room. Instead of entire teams being reliant on Trick Room, a lot of teams are often carrying combinations of Trick Room setters like Dusclops and Jellicent alongside slower Pokemon like Conkeldurr.

Tyranitars dominance of the metagame might also be a culprit considering how its powerful Dark-type attacks can easily dismiss many of the popular Trick Room setters plus its Sand Stream ability can put a rain (or I guess sand) on Torkoals Sunny Day. Tyranitar has also provided some decent competition for Rhyperior as a teams designated Weakness Policy abuser.

While its probably still too early to call it quits for Trick Room teams in VGC 2020, players who still believe in the archetype might need to revisit the drawing board.

Even though a lot of the top teams look similar, the individual Pokemon are often tailor-made to fit specific needs of a player and their team. As a result, there were a lot of interesting techs and new strategies players had success with this weekend.

Tyranitar was all over the place in Melbourne, but instead of the bread-and-butter Weakness Policy version, James Katsaros decided to use a primarily special attacking variant with Dark Pulse and Earth Power. This actually makes some sense considering this kind of Tyranitar can make better use of the Special Defense drops provided by Max Darkness.

Dragapult was a Pokemon that seemed poised to dominate the metagame at first, but it was tapering off from dominant status going into Melbourne. However, it found success on many successful teams as a special attacker mainly for its ability to outspeed the menace known as Durant and KO it with a Fire-type attack. Players like Yuya Tada experimented further with Dragapults diverse move pool by teching Scald on his version.

One of the biggest trends to break out into the mainstream is Rotom (primarily the Wash form) with Nasty Plot. Rotom was never known as a hyper offensive Pokemon, but besides spreading burns with Will-o-Wisp, Rotom forms were always valued for their offensive coverage. Enter the eighth generations gift of Nasty Plot, and Rotom becomes a potent sweeper. Rotom-Wash mightve been the most popular, but it ended up being Marco Silvas Rotom-Heat that took home the championship.

Weve been over Togekiss, but a couple players found another unique means of activating Weakness Policy on their teams. Nihal Noor (Top 4) and Brady Smith (Top 8) used unique teams featuring a Gengar with Sludge Wave that is able to hit the partner Togekiss and activate the Weakness Policy. This move also synergizes well with this teams other unconventional pick in Bisharp.

Thats a wrap for Melbourne and the first of three International Championships in the ever evolving 2020 format. Not only is the metagame changing organically within competitive play, but some big changes will be coming in March as more Gigantamax Pokemon and some familiar faces, courtesy of Pokemon Home, are added. It remains to be seen how far Melbournes impact on the metagame will reach as VGC 2020 continues to develop.
