School nutrition law takes bite out of portion sizes

The new federal law governing school nutrition means smaller slices of pizza and possibly higher prices for students in the Central Bucks School District.

To comply with the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, pizza slices are now 2 inches smaller, said Alicia Kent, senior director at Aramark, which provides food service to the districts schools.

Aramark officials reviewed the new law and its impact during a school board meeting on Monday evening.

The 14-inch pizza slices are necessary, Kent said, to comply with the maximum calorie and grain restrictions in the new law, which went into effect this year and will be fully phased in over three years.

In addition, she said, if a student fails to select a fruit or vegetable as part of his or her meal, the cost will be higher than a student who does make that part of the meal. Thus, a student selecting a slice of pizza and milk will pay more than a student purchasing pizza, an apple and milk.

If they dont take a fruit or vegetable they are charged a la cart pricing, Kent said. Theres a little bit of sticker shock when they are coming through the line and learning what the new requirements are.

There may be a monetary impact on the district as well, she said, noting that the district will not receive reimbursement for student meals that do not meet the new U.S. Department of Agriculture requirements.

These are really significant changes of what the students are allowed to eat, she said.

Among the changes required are the use of only fat-free flavored milk, decreased sodium levels and at least half the grains offered must be whole grain. It also requires different nutrient levels for different age groups.

The new rules will be challenging for students, she said, and require education of students and parents.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan, who accompanied Sicat in the awarding, said Sicats award is a triumph for the citys campaign against malnutrition.

The award was given by the National Nutrition Council for the top performers in nutrition program implementation, exemplary contributions in nutrition program management and delivery of nutrition services for 2011.

Preeminent Medical Association Issues Statement Calling For More Physician Training, Oversight for Expert Nutrition Care

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Physicians representing the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) today issued a position statement strongly recommending enhanced medical doctor training for and renewed focus on treatment of patients clinical nutrition needs.

At a time when the prevalence of nutrition-related illnesses is escalating significantly, both with ambulatory and hospitalized patients, many medical societies are reporting an inadequate number of physician members trained in this important specialty, said M. Molly McMahon, M.D., FACE, professor of medicine with Mayo Clinic Rochesters Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, Diabetes, Nutrition and Internal Medicine, co-chair of the AACE Nutrition Committee and lead author of the position paper. Healthy nutrition is important for health promotion, disease prevention and disease treatment. We wish to develop focused nutrition education for endocrinologists, highlight the value of physician nutrition expertise, and address barriers in clinical nutrition practices to enhance clinical outcomes.

AACE is proposing a four-pronged strategy to address the problem: coordination of CME-accredited advanced nutrition education and training for clinical endocrinologists; an accompanying certification process; collaboration across the many medical disciplines and organizations with interests in nutrition to foster a critical mass of expertise across specialties; and widespread recognition and support of new models for physician-directed nutritional practices that will focus on the value created by such teams as relates to clinic outcomes and quality of life issues.

The statement is published in the September/October 2012 edition of the associations peer-revised medical journal Endocrine Practice (https://www.aace.com/files/position-statements/nutrition.pdf).

UP govt may reconsider Rs 9,000-crore nutrition supply contract to baron

Lucknow, Nov. 19 -- Ponty Chadha's death may cost his group the Rs. 9,000-crore contract to supply food under the supplementary nutrition food programme in Uttar Pradesh.

Sources in the child development and nutrition department said, "To maintain his grip over nutrition supply, Ponty Chadha ensured that the contract was tailor-made for his company and the rivals were automatically eliminated. The technical bid that opened last week was finalised in the favour of Chadha's Great Value Food. However, his death has forced the state government to re-think."

A senior officer said, "The opening of the financial bid (the final approval for the contract) has been delayed." It indicates that new players might gain entry into the nutrition supply business at the cost of Great Value Food.

The UP government had finalised the contract in violation of the Supreme Court order of 2004, according to which only self-help groups, mahila mandals and village communities should be given contracts. Also, instead of annual tenders, the state government had decided to finalise the contract for three years.

Some firms supplying nutritious food in other states had challenged the tender before the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court. The matter is expected to come up before the court on Monday.

Chadha's firm had bagged the tender in 2009 too during the BSP regime.

His sudden death has also cast a shadow over the distribution of nutrition through 90,000 anganwari centres across Uttar Pradesh. Since 2005, Great Value Food has maintained its monopoly over the nutrition supply business in UP. As Chadha's network spreads across 75 districts in the state, very few companies can now fill the gap.

Sambhu Nath, the director of child development and nutrition department, said there will be no adverse impact on the distribution of nutrition among the children and pregnant women as the state government has already finalised the technical bid for the supply. "The company has assured the government that it would maintain regular supply of nutrition to all the centres in the state."

However, the ground reality does not reflect Nath's enthusiasm. The head of Kushati village in Barabanki district, about 40 km from Lucknow, Lalchand, said the supply of nutrition has dried up since October.

"I have lodged a complaint with the SDM but he told me that the private company that was supplying nutrition has put the supply on hold. The children and pregnant women who got regular nutrition at the centre are suffering," said Lalchand.

Reflex Nutrition Focus on Meal Replacement Shakes for January 2013

BRIGHTON, East Sussex, Dec. 12, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via PRWEB - Reflex Nutrition is proud to announce that Diet MRP(R) sets new industry standards providing consumers with one of the best meal replacement shakes available in the World. Each mouth-watering shake delivers high quality nutrition on every level and easily exceeds the requirements of the EU Directive 96/8/EC ,"Foods intended for use in energy-restricted diets for weight reduction.

James Phillips comments, "Far too often meal replacement shakes are made using low quality grade proteins in conjunction with simple sugars like dextrose. Unfortunately most meal replacements are also providing very poor forms of vitamins and minerals, most contain magnesium oxide which is very poorly absorbed. If you are going to replace a meal with a shake we firmly believe that the whole shake should deliver in every area with the highest quality nutrition available. That means high quality forms of protein like whey protein, no added sugar and some of the most bioavailable minerals available. We're also delivering a near 50:50 split of protein to carbohydrates, something that makes a big difference when satisfying hunger."

Diet MRP(R) contains low glycemic index carbohydrates. A special carbohydrate blend of oats, barley and trehalose is the primary carbohydrate source in Diet MRP(R). Lower GI sources of carbohydrates are broken down slowly, providing energy over a longer period of time, allowing for a more balanced release of energy than simple carbohydrate sources such as dextrose or sucrose which are used extensively in many other meal replacements.

Diet MRP(R) also contains a unique multivitamin and mineral complex that's simply not found in other meal replacements. Each serving of Diet MRP contains high quality amino acid chelated minerals, as already mentioned by James Phillips there are no cheap oxide forms of minerals like magnesium oxide or zinc oxide. Reflex Nutrition have also provided the formula with some of very latest nutrients like the very rare form of Vitamin E called Delta GOLD delta-tocotrienol, not to mention Menaquin GOLD Vitamin K2 MK7. A full vitamin B complex is also present with addition of Lactospore pro-biotics.

Diet MRP(R) joins the benchmark weight loss protein shake from Reflex Nutrition called Diet ProteinTM that has just received new packaging. The packaging that is used for both Diet ProteinTM and Diet MRP(R) moves away from Reflex's trademark black and holographic to white and holographic. The new look is being introduced across the entire weight management line of products to help consumers easily identify the nature of such products.

The extensive weight management range from Reflex Nutrition is made to very exacting standards. Each product is made in accordance with strict ISO9001 Quality Control Standards which includes testing each product for nutrition content and testing every single batch for protein content. The process guarantees that the consumer receives exactly what they paid for.

Diet MRP(R) is being launched in a 2.4kg tub which offers 30 servings for just [Pounds]49.99

Reckitt Benckiser buys Schiff Nutrition in $1.4bn deal

Reckitt Benckiser (LSE: RB.L - news) has agreed to buy Schiff Nutrition in a $1.4bn (877m) deal that will unlock the British company's access to a $30bn vitamins and nutrition supplements market.

The consumer goods company, which makes household products including Cillit Bang (BSE: BANG.BO - news) , Nurofen, and Dettol, trumped an earlier bid by German rival Bayer AG.

Reckitt said the deal , which will springboard the company into the higher margin health business, would enable it to work with the American company to build on its US healthcare business, where it already sells brands such as Durex.

"Schiff's portfolio is an excellent fit with our strategic focus on health and hygiene," said Rakesh Kapoor, Reckitt Benckiser's chief executive.

"We are excited to enter the $30 billion global vitamins, minerals and supplements market with such a strong portfolio of high quality branded business in the USA."

Reckitt first made the $42 per share cash tender offer this month , representing a 23.5pc premium over the $34 per share that Bayer, Germany's biggest drugmaker, agreed to pay in late October.

The German drugmaker later said that it did not want to engage in a bidding war for the company.

Reckitt said the deal will be financed with cash and existing credit facilities. It added that it expected to complete the deal by the end of the year.

Reckitt recently said that growth in western markets had stalled amid falling sales of laundry detergents and fabric softeners in southern Europe (Chicago Options: ^REURUSD - news) , while growing middle classes in countries such as China had fuelled demand for more hygiene and health products.
