Complete Nutrition to Nearly Double System Size in Three Years Through Franchising

OMAHA, NE--(Marketwire - Jan 24, 2013) - Complete Nutrition, the fast-growing nutritional supplement retailer known for its consultative approach to health and fitness, will add approximately 150 franchise stores to its network in the next three years, marking a renewed commitment to franchise development.

The move to expand through an aggressive franchise program comes on the heels of significant improvements to the company's support programs aimed at ensuring the long-term success of franchisees. Key initiatives include the system-wide roll out this year of an online learning management system that will streamline franchisee training, as well as the designation of a corporate field consultant for each franchisee.

"We've completely overhauled our training program for franchisees so they are fully prepared for success on day one and beyond," said President Ryan Zink. "We're ready to create the next chapter of the Complete Nutrition brand as we seek to grow with qualified individuals who are passionate about health and fitness all over the country."

New training tools for franchisees include ongoing educational videos on products, operations and local-store marketing, as well as an online dashboard that aids in customer tracking and retention. Franchisees can also access analytical sales data, allowing them to forecast trends and understand how their stores compare to system-wide averages in real time.

Complete Nutrition will open 25 franchise stores this year through agreements already signed, elevating the total store count to 196. Among the key markets for further expansion include Columbia, S.C., Tri-Cities, Tenn. (Johnson City, Kingsport and Bristol), Charleston, W.Va., and the following markets in California: Bakersfield, Redding, Chico, Sacramento and Eureka.

Complete Nutrition began franchising in 2008 and in five years catapulted to 171 stores with projected revenue of $110 million by year's end. To keep pace with system growth, Complete Nutrition has beefed up its corporate staff from five to more than 50 employees in the past two years, including the hiring of CEO Sheldon Harris who previously served as president of Cold Stone Creamery amidst rapid franchise expansion for the ice cream concept.

NUTRITION MATTERS: Get creative with a healthy lunchbox

YOU probably know by now the importance of balanced nutrition and making informed food choices on the path to improving your health. One major obstacle in your daily diet, however, is eating poor lunches at work. A lack of time, group pressure and deadlines cause many people to resort to eating unhealthy fast foods or munching a boring homemade sandwich.

One way of offsetting that is with a nutritionally creative lunchbox.

Healthy eating does not happen in a vacuum. It requires good planning of meals followed by purposeful shopping.

Lunch is the second most important meal after breakfast, as it is essential in generating your energy levels through regulating your blood glucose levels throughout the day. This improves your performance and has a positive effect on appetite and weight control.

A nutritionally balanced lunch not only avoids the need for inappropriate snacking late in the afternoon but also helps you enjoy a lighter dinner.

Packed with fibre, anti-oxidants, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals, a nutritionally balanced lunch consists of the following food items:

1. The right kind of protein

That means low-fat protein foods rich in omega-3 fat, such as low-fat or fat-free yoghurt, white fish, fatty fish (peppered mackerel, sardines, pilchards, salmon or tuna) low -fat cheese, chicken (without the skin), soya beans, tofu and lean cold meats (pastrami, roast beef or ham).

2. The right kind of carbohydrates

That means whole-grain, high-fibre, low-GI starches such as wild or brown rice, bulgur wheat, quinoa, stampkoring, canned chickpeas, lentils and beans, as well as wholewheat crackers and heavy seed breads.

Foods Nutrition Experts Will Never Eat

As a registered dietitian, many people are interested in what foods I eat, and just as often, what would never land on my plate. All foods fit, I say to them, and to my patients. Anything in moderation. But truth be told, there are foods that--barring a deserted-island situation--I wouldn't touch. White bread, Spam, sugary breakfast cereals, soda, cheese doodles, and Doritos: Not for me. I avoid foods that offer very limited, if any, nutritional benefit. While I have a few exceptions, at this point, those kinds of foods don't even taste good to me.

I asked my registered dietitian (RD) friends, with whom I've enjoyed good food and cocktails, what foods they avoid:

Karen Ansel, MS, RD, CDN, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and coauthor of The Calendar Diet: A Month by Month Guide to Losing Weight While Living Your Life

"As for what I wouldn't eat: hot dogs, without a doubt. Even if they're nitrate-free, they're still made up of too many parts and pieces, which is just unnatural."

Patricia Bannan, MS, RD, author of Eat Right When Time is Tight

"Sugary soda. Not only does it taste overly-sweet, it's such a waste of calories. A 12-ounce can of soda has almost 40 grams of sugar, and research shows excess sugar can lead to excess pounds and a myriad of health issues. If you do love a soda, limit it to once or twice a month, and get used to other options like citrus-infused water or non-sugared iced tea."

[Beverage Face-Offs: Which One Is Best?]

Elisa Zied, MS, RD, CDN, author of Nutrition at Your Fingertips and fellow Eat + Run blogger

"I would not eat brains, frog legs, or bugs. Otherwise, no foods are off limits, as I think all foods can fit into a healthful and balanced diet. And when I want something that I don't think of as healthy--like a hot dog, pastrami, French fries, Doritos, or a Hostess cupcake--I have it, but keep the portion small."

Nutrition education program for food stamp recipients faces cuts

by Julie Siple, Minnesota Public Radio

January 16, 2013

Audio player code:

ST. PAUL, Minn. Recent action by the federal government to prevent dairy prices from skyrocketing will curtail an effort to help Minnesota food stamp recipients eat healthier.

As part of the fical cliff negotiations earlier this month, officials moved to keep the dairy industry's price support system from expiring. But to do so, Congress took about $110 million from the nutritional education component of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps.

As a result, the education program aimed at helping low income Americans make healthy food choices took a hit. Program leaders in Minnesota are scrambling to absorb what they expect will be a $2.6 million cut from a $9.7 million grant in FY2013. States have not received final word on the size of the cuts.

"We know the research shows that kids that eat well, parents that eat well, do better at work, they do better at school," said Bev Durgan, dean of University of Minnesota Extension, which runs the statewide program. "It cuts down on health care costs. So this program really is about helping people make better decisions."

Durgan said the program is particularly important at a time of economic crisis, when families are struggling to put healthy food on the table and health care costs are rising. Community nutrition educators help families stretch tight food budgets to afford enough healthy food. They also help children make smart decisions that will serve them well over a lifetime.

TEACHING GOOD HABITS IN FOOD CHOICES

On a recent day, middle school students at Washington Technology Magnet School in St. Paul gathered around Angie Thornhill, one of those nutrition educators, to make a simple taco salad.

House Call: Pregnancy and Nutrition

Posted on: 9:10 am, January 16, 2013, by Ryan Sullivan, updated on: 11:15am, January 16, 2013

Nutrition plays an integral role in maintaining overall well-being, especially for expectant and new mothers.

It is especially important for expectant mothers to get started on a daily regimen of prenatal vitamins as soon as possible to ensure they are getting the right amount of essential vitamins that help in fetal development and maintain the mothers health, such as folic acid, iron and vitamin C.

A balanced diet with proper amounts of protein, fruits, vegetables and whole grains is highly recommended for pregnant women to safeguard the health of mother and baby.

More: Pregnancy Statistics

It is also important to be aware of the foods and substances to avoid while pregnant. Women who are pregnant should avoid consumption of alcohol, drugs and caffeine, as well as foods high in mercury, such as king mackerel, tile fish and shark.

Undercooked foods can also pose an increased risk to pregnant women. Therefore foods such as eggs should be served with the yoke fully cooked, and deli meats should be heated before consumption. It is also important to avoid unpasteurized milks, cheeses and fruit juices.

Because of the absolute importance of maintaining a balanced and safe diet during pregnancy, Cone Health Womens Hospital offers a Birth and Baby education series for expectant mothers in the community. The series of five weekly classes helps mothers and their labor partner prepare for childbirth. Topics covered in the classes include care for their newborn, nutrition, childbirth options, cesarean birth, pain management, and comfort techniques, as well as a tour of Womens Hospital.

To find out more about the Birth and Baby education series and other new baby and parenting classes offered through Cone Health Womens Hospital, visit conehealth.com or call (336) 832-6848.
