NASA Names New Director for Langley Research Center

NASA today announced thatStephen G. Jurczykhas been named director of NASA's Langley Research Center inHampton, Va., succeedingLesa Roewho served in that capacity sinceOctober 2005.

NASA AdministratorCharles Boldenmade the announcementApril 28in an agency-wide email to employees.

Jurczyk has been serving as the acting center director since last November when Roe was temporarily assigned to NASA Headquarters as the deputy associate administrator to oversee NASA's Technical Capabilities Assessment Team. Roe will remain in her position as deputy associate administrator.

"I am honored to lead such an outstanding organization and look forward to the opportunity," said Jurczyk. "I want to thankLesa Roefor her exceptional leadership of the center for nearly nine years, and look forward to working with her in her new position as NASA's deputy associate administrator."

Jurczyk began his NASA career at Langley in 1988 as an electronics engineer in the electronic systems branch. On detail to NASA Headquarters, he managed the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission and formulated the technology development strategy for the Earth Science Enterprise. From 1994 to 1997, he was the instrument systems engineer and, later, the spacecraft systems manager for the Landsat 7 project at Goddard Space Flight Center inGreenbelt, Md.

He returned to Langley in 1997 to serve in a variety of leadership positions, including director of systems engineering, director of research and technology, ultimately being selected by Roe inJanuary 2006to serve as the center's deputy director.

Jurczyk holds bachelor and masters of science degrees in electrical engineering from theUniversity of Virginia. He's married, has two daughters, and lives inWilliamsburg, Va.

NASA Langley Research Center was established in 1917 as this nation's first civil aeronautics research laboratory, and today has a workforce of almost 3,600 people, including civil servants and contractors. For almost a century the center's research, science and technology development has revolutionized aviation and spaceflight, and continues to enable NASA's significant contributions to the nation.

After nearly 50 years of warping across galaxies and saving the universe from a variety of alien threats and celestial disasters, Star Treks William Shatner finally went where no other member of Starfleet has gone before. This weekend, the acclaimed actor and director was honored with NASAs Distinguished Public Service medal, the highest award bestowed by the agency to non-government personnel.

The honor was presented to Shatner Saturday evening in Los Angeles at his annual Hollywood Charity Horse Show, where he raises money for a variety of childrens causes. The citation for the medal reads, For outstanding generosity and dedication to inspiring new generations of explorers around the world, and for unwavering support for NASA and its missions of discovery.

William Shatner has been so generous with his time and energy in encouraging students to study science and math, and for inspiring generations of explorers, including many of the astronauts and engineers who are a part of NASA today, said David Weaver, NASAs associate administrator for the Office of Communications at NASA Headquarters in Washington. Hes most deserving of this prestigious award.

A life-long advocate of science and space exploration, Shatner gained worldwide fame and became a cultural icon for his portrayal of Captain James Tiberius Kirk, commander of the starship USS Enterprise in NBCs science fiction television series Star Trek from 1966 to 1969. It was a role he would reprise in an animated version of the series in 1973, seven major films from 1979 to 1994, and more recent Star Trek video games.

Shatners relationship with NASA dates back to the original series, with references to the space agency and its programs that were incorporated into storylines throughout the television and film franchises. In 1979, when NASA was ready to introduce a reusable spacecraft as the successor to the Apollo program, a new space shuttle prototype, originally to be named Constitution, was dubbed Enterprise in honor of the Star Trek universe and the work of Shatner and his series co-stars.

More recently, Shatner donated his time and vocal talent to host the NASA documentary celebrating the 30th anniversary of space shuttle missions. To honor the final flight of shuttle Discovery in 2011, he agreed to recreate his famous Star Trek television introduction in one of the last wake-up calls for the astronauts of the STS-133 mission.

NASA Supersonic Science Aims to Shush Sonic Booms

The dream of a supersonic passenger airplane lives on. NASA is currently researching new designs for supersonic aircraft, and the space agency is now focusing on reducing the strength of the sonic booms, the bane of supersonic flight.

For a long time, scientists have known that sonic booms the sound created by a shock wave from an aircraft that moves faster than the speed of sound are affected by many factors, including the shape of the aircraft and where the plane's components are located. Because of this, engineers are able to change the signature of a boom by design to minimize its loudness during flight, NASA officials said in a statement.

The Federal Aviation Administration doesn't have a specific level of "loudness" that is acceptable for a sonic boom created by a supersonic plane. In 1973, the FAA prohibited domestic civil supersonic flights overland, and this ban prevented Concorde a supersonic airliner that stopped flying in 2003 from making supersonic flights over land. The prohibition has helped reduce impacts on the environment and made the skies quieter, NASA officials said. But space agency officials have still been researching ways to quiet the boom and help make supersonic flights with passengers over land a reality. [NASA's Vision of Future Air Travel (Images)]

"Engine installation is a critical part of achieving an overall low boom design," Peter Coen, manager of NASA's High Speed Project, said in a statement. "If we mount the engines in a conventional manner, we need to carefully tailor the shape of the wing to diffuse the shock waves. If we mount the engines above the wing, the shock wave can be directed upward and not affect the ground signature. However, such installations may have performance penalties."

All of the new designs for a supersonic airplane one each by Boeing and Lockheed Martin have some basic features in common: either swept-back or delta wings, a pointy nose, and an extremely aerodynamic fuselage.

What sets each design apart are the other parts of the aircraft and how the components are arranged. Boeing's design has two engines mounted beneath a delta wing, with a third engine on top of the aircraft. The Lockheed Martin design has swept-back wings, with two engines on top of each wing (an unusual configuration).

NASA is testing the designs by placing small-scale models of the proposed aircraft in wind tunnels. They are also testing models of the engines by themselves, studying how air flows through and around them.

"Capturing this flow rate is important because it directly impacts a supersonic aircraft's thrust performance in flight, as well as cruise efficiency," Coen said.

The research is being overseen by NASA's High Speed Project, a part of the agency's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate.
