Rob Williams: Hands-on research helps grow future technology leaders
With a variety of innovative collaborations, the Air Force Research Lab organizes real-world approaches to technology challenges. Rob Williams is research director of Discovery Lab, a partnership of the Wright Brothers Institute and the Air Force Research Lab. He is also program manager of Summer-at-the-Edge (SATE) and Year-at-the-Edge (YATE) Student Intern Programs at WBI #39;s Tec^Edge Innovation and Collaboration Center. The project brings together multidisciplinary, joint teams for a period of a few weeks to one or more years, allowing for intense collaboration on a specific challenge or opportunity. Teams include government, university, small-business, and industry researchers. Discovery Lab is the home of the Summer-at-the-Edge (SATE) and Year-at-the-Edge (YATE) Student Intern Programs that bring high school to PhD students together with research sponsors from across the nation. The aim is to mentor student teams and tackle real-world research projects of importance to the Air Force and the nation. The technologies addressed by the SATE and YATE programs include nanotechnology, biology and healthcare, cybersecurity, virtual reality, additive manufacturing, and many others. Discovery Lab #39;s latest effort is the establishment of a 16-campus Virtual (Reality) Discovery Center which will be the foundation for a 1000-student outreach focused on creating a tech/leadership-development pipeline from high school to college through virtual academies and on-site research ...From:SPIETVViews:0 0ratingsTime:05:08More inScience Technology

Nanotechnology is an emerging technology that has the potential to be used in a broad array of FDA-regulated products, including medical products, foods and cosmetics. Nanomaterials, developed using nanotechnology, are measured in nanometers -- equal to about one-billionth of a meter -- so small that they can #39;t be seen with a regular microscope. These nanomaterials can have different chemical, physical, or biological properties than their conventionally-scaled counterpart materials used in many products regulated by FDA. FDA has long encountered the combination of promise, risk, and uncertainty that accompanies emerging technologies. Nanotechnology is not unique in this regard. The very changes in biological, chemical and other properties that can make nanotechnology applications so exciting also may merit examination to determine any effects on product safety, effectiveness, or other attributes. Understanding nanotechnology remains a top FDA priority. FDA is monitoring the evolving science and has a robust research agenda to help assess the safety and effectiveness of products using nanotechnology. Parios Regenerative Sciences, Inc. Licenses Exclusive Rights to Organic Nanotechnology for Skin Repair

CONCORD, Mass., Nov. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Parios Regenerative Sciences, Inc., a privately held medical device company specializing in the development of biomaterials for skin repair and regeneration, has entered into a comprehensive license agreement with Brown University, licensing exclusive rights to a proprietary organic nanotechnology for use in dermatological applications. The nanotechnology, Oderm, has clinical relevance in cosmetic skin rejuvenation, dermatological applications, and advanced wound care.

"Our agreement with Brown is a significant milestone for Parios," stated Mark Johanson, President and Chief Executive Officer. "The Oderm technology shows great promise in advancing the field of skin regeneration for both aesthetic and wound care applications. We are committed to the commercial and clinical success of this novel skin care product."

Under the terms of the agreement, Parios has obtained an exclusive license to a platform of intellectual property and technologies co-developed by Dr. Thomas Webster, former associate professor of engineering at Brown.

"We are enthusiastic to have partnered with such an experienced and accomplished team at Parios," said Katherine Gordon, Managing Director of the Brown University Technology Ventures Office, "and look forward to successful development of the product."

The Oderm biomaterial consists of organic nanomolecules that self-assemble into structures resembling collagen a major component of skin. Using these organic structures to replace degenerated or damaged skin encourages the growth of natural tissue. The company's goal is to provide off-the-shelf materials that regenerate healthy and functional tissue and offer a repair that lasts the life of the patient.

About Parios Regenerative Sciences, Inc.

Parios is a privately held company located in Concord, MA focused on the growing market of skin tissue regeneration. The company is developing the Oderm product line to compete in the non-invasive skin care market, by offering injectable and topical solutions to stimulate collagen regrowth. Current products are in the preclinical phase of development. With Oderm and other advanced biomaterials in the pipeline, Parios offers a modern alternative to existing skin repair therapies.

NanoMalaysia, IBM Ink Nanotechnology R&D Pact

By Mohd Haikal Mohd Isa

JOHOR BAHARU, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- NanoMalaysia Bhd and IBM Malaysia today inked an agreement for research collaboration in nanotechnology design and development over a two-year period.

NanoMalaysia Chairman Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Zawawi Ismail said this strategic cooperation would leverage world-class technology and expertise from IBM, complementing Malaysia's nanotechnology ecosystem.

"This will go a long way to raise the bar on intellectual property development and the nanotechnology industry as we journey through a knowledge-based economy and contribute one per cent of the country's Gross National Income by 2020," he told reporters today.

The announcement and document exchange was held during the Iskandar Malaysia Sustainability Summit 2012 here.

NanoMalaysia was represented by Zawawi and IBM Malaysia by its Managing Director Ramanathan Sathiamutty.

NanoMalaysia Bhd is a corporate entity under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The collaboration, said Zawawi, includes research into the use of Malaysian-made Graphene and Aerogel for commercialisation, as well as testing IBM's anti-microbial star polymer tachnology for healthcare applications.
