Sometimes our greatest ally is also our worst enemy. The immune system which protects us from foreign bacteria as well as internal mutations can turn on our bodies by attacking healthy cells. This behavior leads to different kinds of diseases including multiple sclerosis (MS), Type 1 diabetes, asthma, and some allegories. Researchers at the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging & Bioengineering and Northwestern University have recently found a way to combat these diseases by selectively suppressing the immune system, instead of disabling it almost entirely.

The traditional method to combat these diseases is with medication that keeps the immune system from responding, but this is a dangerous tactic as it opens the patient up to other diseases, including cancer. There are some newer techniques though that use a patient's white blood cells to selectively suppress the immune system, but the process involved is quite complex as the patient's white blood cells have to be harvested and manipulated. What the researchers have done is replicate and even surpasses the results of this newer technique but with nanoparticles instead of white blood cells. These nanoparticles have a chemical attached to them that tells the immune system to ignore a specific kind of cell, such as myelin which is what is attacked in MS. While the one cell type is ignored, other actual threats can be attacked.

By using nanoparticle which can be mass produced outside of a hospital, this treatment should eventually become available to the public, pending clinical trials. Fortunately the material the nanoparticles are made of have already been approved by the FDA and in use.

EDMONTON - Prostate cancer researchers at the University of Alberta are making tiny homing beacons that will detect and deliver drugs that go straight into tumours.

John Lewis says the technology can be used to target tumours directly. This marks a departure from chemotherapy, which kills both healthy and cancerous dividing cells.

"We can potentially use these homing beacons at any stage of cancer progressions. So very early cancers, we can detect them better using these agents and then in late stage cancers we can develop drugs that will specifically hone into the cancer and kill it better," Lewis said.

The findings can be applied to other types of cancers.

Fong Cho, lead researcher on the study published in the journal Nano Letters, said the nanoparticles can be used both for imaging and for drug delivery.

"For my purpose, you put in something that binds to your cancer directly to a particle that leads to your cancer and the nanoparticle will light up the cancer," she said.

"You could also, for example, put drugs on it and deliver the drugs specifically to the tumour without harming the surrounding cells and tissues that causes a lot of side effects."

The lab is also looking at ways of identifying and stopping metastasis what happens when cancer spreads from the main tumour.

Metastasis causes over 90% of cancer deaths, Lewis said.

Longterm use of nanotechnology to affect everything from stain-resistant clothing to more efficient fuel could reduce a plant's ability to produce food, according to a study of soybeans at the University of California-Santa Barbara.

In both cases, the substances became part of the plants. In ground spiked with zinc oxide nanoparticles, soybeans seemed to fare slightly better than normal. In soil treated with cerium oxide nanoparticles, the plants grew fewer leaves and punier bean pods," Scott Canon of The Kansas City Star reports. "That raises implications for the fields of Kansas, Missouri and the rest of the Grain Belt where, scientists presume, manufactured nanoparticles have been accumulating for a few decades now.

And nanotechnology could wreak havoc elsewhere, including in sewage plants, after chemicals wash off into local wastewater treatment facilities.

According to the study, "The results provide a clear, but unfortunate, view of what could arise over the long term (including that) plant growth and yield diminished ... Juxtaposed against widespread land application of wastewater treatment biosolids to food crops, these findings forewarn of agriculturally associated human and environmental risks from the accelerating use of (manufactured nanomaterial)."

The stuff is going to end up somewhere, said Patricia Holden, a professor of environmental microbiology at the University of California-Santa Barbara and a lead researcher in the soybean study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Were only beginning to learn what that might mean.

Organizations such as Food & Water Watch worry that the science will become so ingrained in our way of life that it can't be undone.

And while Todd Kuiken, a senior researcher at the Woodrow Wilson Center's Project on Emerging Nanotechnology, said the study "dosed the hell out of a bunch of soil," he acknowledged that nanoparticles can be absorbed by the plant and cut back its ability to produce food.

Ken Klabunde, a Kansas State University distinguished professor of chemistry, told The Kansas City Star that nanotechnology should use only safe substances such as zinc and cerium, rather than lead.

Santa Barbara, CA A new nanotechnology device mimics a dogs nose so closely that it can detect explosives and other substances.According to ScienceDaily, their goal is to make portable, accurate, and highly sensitive explosive-sniffing devices that could become as commonplace as smoke detectors in public places.

Dogs are still the gold standard for scent detection of explosives. But like a person, a dog can have a good day or a bad day, get tired or distracted, said Meinhart. We have developed a device with the same or better sensitivity as a dogs nose that feeds into a computer to report exactly what kind of molecule its detecting.

The key to developing their nanotechnology is in the merging of principles from mechanical engineering and chemistry in a collaboration made possible by UCSBs Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies.Our research project not only brings different disciplines together to develop something new, Meinhart said, but it also creates jobs for the local community and hopefully benefits society in general.

Results published inAnalytical Chemistryshow that their device can detect the vapor emanating from TNT-based explosives, which contains anairborne molecules called 2,4-dinitrotoluene. The human nose cannot detect such small amounts, but sniffer dogs have long been used to discover explosives and other substances. Their technology is an example of biomimetics, meaning that their ideas were inspired by the efficient biological design of the canine olfactory mucus layer, which absorbs and then concentrates airborne molecules into receptors.

The device is capable of real-time detection and identification of certain types of molecules at concentrations of 1 ppb or below. Its specificity and sensitivity are unparalleled, said Dr. Brian Piorek, former mechanical engineering doctoral student in Meinharts laboratory and Chief Scientist at Santa Barbara-based SpectraFluidics.

Explosives sniffing dogs are unlikely to be gone any time soon.This nanotechnology has not been field-tested but its sure to be featured in the future in an airport near you.

Yet research still in its infancy, and trailing the deployment of emerging commercial applications, suggests those same breakthroughs in nanotechnology might some day make Midwestern crops less bountiful.

Scientists in California planted soybeans in soil doused with two kinds of metallic nanoparticles to see if the super-small manufactured stuff would just sit in the dirt like miniature pebbles or become part of the plants.

In ground spiked with zinc oxide nanoparticles, soybeans seemed to fare slightly better than normal. In soil treated with cerium oxide nanoparticles, the plants grew fewer leaves and punier bean pods.

Both examples, researchers wrote, showed the micro-materials became part of the plants.

That raises implications for the fields of Kansas, Missouri and the rest of the Grain Belt where, scientists presume, manufactured nanoparticles have been accumulating for a few decades now.
