From Arvind Fashions to Peter England, apparel makers are betting on anti-viral fabric but they might not nece – Business Insider India

Both Arvind and Peter England have partnered with the Switzerland-based HeiQ, a leader in the textile innovation sector, to bring out the anti-viral collections. HeiQ Viroblock claims to reduce viral infectivity by 99.99% and also says it is one of the first textile technologies in the world to claim such efficacy on SARS-CoV-2.

HeiQ Viroblock is a special combination of our advanced silver and vesicle technology that has been proven effective against the human coronavirus 229E and SARS-CoV-2, causing Covid-19, with 99.99% reduction of virus in 30 minutes. It is a safe, hypoallergenic and patent pending technology, said Carlo Centonze, CEO, HeiQ Group in a statement.

"The demand for textile with antimicrobial material has picked up in the market amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, and these are being used to manufacture N95 masks, surgical masks, PPEs and food packaging bags. While its true efficacy in the long term is yet to be proven, however, in the short and medium term this trend will certainly be relevant to the manufacturers," said Pinakiranjan Mishra, Partner and Leader, Consumer Products and Retail, EY India.

But the big brands arent the only ones to begin marketing anti-viral fabrics. Smaller companies like Nirvana Being, denim fashion brand Freakins are selling anti-viral masks.

Meanwhile, Nirvana Being said that their masks are viral filtration efficiency (VFE) is certified and tested by Nelson Labs, USA. "We also do not have any form of coating on our masks as coatings tend to disappear after one wash. All our products were created for the mass market after thorough research wherein the team realized that COVID-19 particles have a diameter of close to 0.12 microns, and standard media and HEPA filters, which are somewhat porous, cannot filter nano-particles smaller than 0.3 microns. Therefore, Nirvana Being developed a filter using nanotechnology to filter at 0.1 micron. In short, our masks are designed to filter particles which are even smaller than COVID-19 particles with high efficiency," Jai Dhar Gupta, founder and CEO, Nirvana Being told Business Insider.

But it is important to remember that they are not proven to be effective against COVID-19 and therefore, no matter what you are wearing, you can never be too safe.

Nano-Enabled Packaging Market: An Array of Graphics and Analysis of Major Industry Segments COVID-19 - 3rd Watch News

Chicago could be hub for future manufacturing; Azul 3D, mHub, Fusion OEM already showing the way, Ed Zotti wr – Chicago Sun-Times

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of U.S. manufacturing and shown how digital technology can pave the way for its revival.

A few local demonstrations:

Several lessons can be drawn from this:

Theres no guarantee re-shoring will happen or that it will be in the Midwest. Globalization isnt going away. Manufacturing is certain to become increasingly digital, but other countries or other parts of the United States could reap most of the benefit and, in some respects, are well ahead of us.

We wont see a return of the days when all you needed to get a good-paying factory job was a strong back. The jobs wont necessarily require a college degree, but workers will need smarts, training and the ability to adapt.

Chicago itself isnt likely to see a major resurgence of manufacturing jobs. Costs, land availability and other factors will continue to drive most industrial employment to the suburbs.

But the city has an indispensable role to play. If Midwestern manufacturing is to revive, it will need a tech innovation hub that attracts top global talent and provides a startup ecosystem that gives entrepreneurs the wherewithal to generate ideas, build teams, raise capital and get ventures running without massive upfront investment.

Chicago is the obvious candidate.

Judging from whats worked elsewhere, a productive tech ecosystem would require several elements. One is a cluster of entrepreneurially minded research institutions to foster ideas and technologies that will translate into new products, businesses and jobs.

Chicago has at least one such entity Northwestern.

Northwestern, in my 30 years here, has developed into a world-class research institution, says chemistry professor Chad Mirkin, a nanotechnology leader and founding director of the universitys International Institute for Nanotechnology. Its been an unbelievable transformation in a short period of time.

Much of this is due to the IIN. Established in 2000, it has spawned 22 companies, attracted $1 billion in investment and commercialized more than 2,000 products. Mirkin has started eight companies and has more than 1,200 patents or patent applications.

His latest venture, Azul 3D, co-founded with fellow NU researchers James Hedrick and David Walker, has developed a breakthrough approach to 3D printing. First-generation 3D printers build objects by depositing one layer of material at a time a slow process best suited to prototyping. Azul builds on subsequent advances to enable printing of a production-grade, human-sized object in a few hours 2,000 times faster than first-generation printers and 15 times faster than the companys closest competitor.

Thats a game-changing leap.

When you can print large things or many small things fast, thats a viable route to manufacturing, Mirkin says.

It hastens the arrival of true digital fabrication, with which it will be possible to go from concept to computer file to finished product with a minimum of steps.

That could lead to a remaking of the industrial landscape, lowering costs and other barriers to entry and enabling a startup culture for manufactured goods comparable to the one for digital services.

Another organization hoping to help cultivate a manufacturing innovation ecosystem is mHUB, the incubator launched in 2017 by World Business Chicago and partners. Located in a former Motorola facility on Chicago Avenue, mHUB provides 273 companies with low-cost office space, access to advanced manufacturing technology and support services such as assistance in creating business plans.

It also offers member companies which collectively include 600 entrepreneurs an opportunity to collaborate on multidisciplinary side projects.

One example is the $350 ventilator. Another is a commercial toaster commissioned by Marmon Holdings that uses artificial intelligence to brown bread perfectly in 10 seconds.

For the latter, In three months, we were able to develop eight prototypes that went out for field testing for a total cost of $60,000, says mHUB co-founder and CEO Haven Allen. Thats unheard of.

Other players include MxD, an innovation center on Goose Island that grew out of UI Labs, and the Chicago Connectory, a Merchandise Mart-based partnership of enterprises involved in the Internet of Things, in which devices communicate digitally without human intervention.

Not all hard tech opportunities involve manufacturing. Jerry Quandt, executive director of the Illinois Autonomous Vehicles Association, a Connectory partner, thinks Chicago can play a role in developing digital communications infrastructure for transportation technologies such as self-driving vehicles.

Mirkin says a key challenge will be attracting a critical mass of entrepreneurial rainmakers capable of developing promising ideas into successful businesses. Were moving in the right direction, he says.

Allen agrees. Theres an opportunity for Chicago to be the epicenter of the fourth industrial revolution, he says, marrying digital to physical technology.

In just five years, Allen says, Chicago has laid solid groundwork.

Israel Is Spearheading a ‘Bio-Convergence’ Revolution | Anya Eldan – The Times of Israel

Four months after the World Health Organization declared it a pandemic, COVID-19 remains at the forefront of the global health agenda and will likely continue to be in the foreseeable future. But this acute global challenge hasnt displaced the long-term problems plaguing health systems worldwide increasing rates of multiple chronic diseases, rising drug development costs and inefficient, unsustainable and prohibitively expensive healthcare delivery models. Indeed, the pandemic has only accentuated and exacerbated these pre-existing conditions.

Ignoring or downplaying these longer-standing issues wont help countries effectively combat the current health crisis and are only a recipe for ensuring more crises down the line. Researchers, clinicians, entrepreneurs, business leaders and governments must therefore adopt a two-pronged approach, investing in innovative solutions for addressing both near- and long-term healthcare challenges.

This will entail nothing short of a revolution in medical treatment and Bio-convergence is poised to play a major role in making it happen. Bio-convergence represents a 21st-century approach to problem-solving, an upcoming technological wave with the potential to revolutionize the digital health industry, as well as many other sectors.

What exactly is Bio-convergence? The nascent field fuses life sciences with different technologies from mathematics, engineering, and the physical and computational sciences, creating a sum far greater than its parts. Indeed, the human body is an incredibly complex organism made up of countless intricate systems, so it makes perfect sense that treating it must be multidisciplinary and multifaceted. Enabled by advances in genomics, gene therapy, DNA sequencing, artificial intelligence, big data, nanotechnology, and synthetic biology, Bio-convergence is paving such a holistic path to remarkable innovations in treatment, discovery and delivery, regenerative medicine, and diagnostics, with potential benefits for COVID-19 and well beyond.

It is exactly this tremendous potential for improving healthcare across the board and in the process bettering lives which has led the Israel Innovation Authority, Israels public agency for promoting innovation at all levels, to spearhead efforts to turn the country into a hub of Bio-convergence endeavor and invention.

Bio-Convergence and the Healthcare Landscape

The Bio-convergence opportunity coincides with a crisis moment in the global health system. While breakthroughs in medical research and treatment have increased global life expectancy at birth from 52.6 years in 1960 to 72.6 years in 2018, aging populations and rising rates of chronic conditions like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes have sent healthcare costs surging.

By 2022, global health expenditure will surpass $10 trillion. That spending tends to be disproportionately devoted to managing chronic illness: In the U.S., for instance, nearly 60% of adults have at least one chronic condition, and these individuals account for 90% of healthcare spending overall, according to the Rand Corporation.

Improving outcomes for patients with chronic illnesses while also controlling costs hinges on early, effective, and personalized intervention and thats precisely what Bio-convergence aims to make possible.

How Israel Is Propelling Bio-Convergence Forward

In theory, its clear why Israel is well-positioned to lead the Bio-convergence revolution. With approximately 1,600 active life sciences companies, unparalleled expertise in fields from AI to digital health to nanotechnology, and some of the worlds leading universities, research centers, and hospital systems, the Start-Up Nation is incubating some of the most promising developments in Bio-convergence.

Ranked fifth in the world in patents per capita, the country has the worlds second-largest centralized electronic health records system and is home to more than 600 active medical device companies, 500 AI-driven healthcare companies, and R&D centers established by major multinational companies like Medtronic, Philips, GE, and more. Israels medical, engineering, and scientific knowhow can fairly be described as an excellent fit for Bio-convergence, with healthcare systems and patients alike standing to gain big.

And in practice? Israeli-developed innovations in Bio-convergence are attracting global attention. Consider the case of BiomX, which combines synthetic biology with an advanced AI platform to develop innovative microbiome-based therapeutics which aim at preventing and treating cancer, skin disorders, and other medical conditions. BiomX is a publicly traded company which offers a complete end-to-end solution from target discovery to development of therapeutic compounds.

BiomX is part of an expanding ecosystem of Israeli companies and institutions operating in the field of Bio-convergence:

MeMed harnesses AI, systems engineering, and molecular biology to create a diagnostic platform to generate precise distinctions between bacterial and viral infections.

The Technions Lab for Cancer Drug Delivery & Cell-Based Technologies has developed nano-ghosts, a drug delivery system that delivers cancer drugs directly to cancerous cells, sparing surrounding healthy cells.

Such companies are continuing a longstanding Israeli tradition of biotechnological innovation. In 1996, the Weizmann Institute of Science developed Copaxone, the groundbreaking multiple sclerosis drug that reduces the frequency of relapses. In the 1970s, the Technion, in collaboration with Teva Pharmaceuticals, incubated Azilect, a drug used to treat Parkinsons Disease.

Notably, these breakthroughs were the product of multi-stakeholder, multidisciplinary collaborations bringing together academic researchers, technologists, and industry exemplifying the kind of cross-pollination at the heart of Bio-convergence.

Accelerating Innovation in Bio-Convergence

At the core of Israels early success in Bio-convergence is its world-renowned human capital. Unleashing the full potential of Israels human capital requires smart investments to support and accelerate promising technologies and cutting-edge solutions which is why over the past decade, the Israel Innovation Authority has invested more than $100 million annually in the life sciences sector across a number of different programs.

Through international cooperation agreements, R&D incentive programs targeting multinational corporations, and early-stage incubator programs, the Innovation Authority is propelling Bio-convergence forward for the benefit of humankind.

The innovations that will define the future of healthcare will transcend disciplines, relying on ingenuity and expertise across different domains. This outside-the-box approach gave rise to the Start-Up Nation and it has put Israel in a prime position to pioneer a new era of healthcare with this groundbreaking approach to human wellness.
