Is Nanotechnology Ready to Enter the IoT Security War? – RTInsights

Like other emerging technologies, the use of nanotech in cybersecurity is poised to disrupt in the best possible sense of the word.

The term disruptive technology brings to the uninitiated mind images of chaos and destruction. However, such advances are intended to improve our quality of life by exchanging old, inefficient systems for innovations that alter our perceptions, habits, and routines. Of the five or so major technologies that have emerged over the past few years such as nanotechnology, the Internet of Things (IoT) is considered by some to be the most disruptive of all.

This is because it has the potential to completely reshape how businesses operate and directly seep into every aspect of our lives. Not everyone is impacted by blockchain, and there are many areas that are yet unreachable with 5G or run by AI. There are even people who refuse to shop online.

But, you would be hard-pressed to locate a person who doesnt interact with an IoT device. Even the Sherpas on Mount Everest use GPS, the forefather of all IoT devices.

By 2030, there will be more than 25 billion IoT networked devices in use. Thats three times the number currently connected. However, greater access also leads to less security.

Technology giveth with one hand and taketh away with the other.

The risks begin with end-users and the inherent liabilities of human error, but they dont end there.

The Internet of Things is essentially a vast network of physical devices that are connected via sensors and software that transmit data over the internet. Through IoT sensors, everything from the flow of customers through a retail outlet to the flow of traffic through the streets can be monitored and streamlined in real-time.

This technology allows you to see whos at your door any time of day or night regardless of your physical location, and it keeps home and business systems running at peak efficiency. Sensors embedded in smart shelving monitor customer activity and inventory without intrusive technologies like facial recognition software and cameras. By analyzing IoT data, companies can provide more tailored services through automation while cutting the cost of doing business.

In theory, it makes life safer, less expensive, and more convenient for everyone it touches by extending the positive aspects of the virtual world into the physical realm.

However, the exponential growth of IoT networking also increases the attack surface and provides more opportunities for cybercriminals to invade our privacy, hold our data hostage, or simply create chaos for their own amusement.

An attack surface of any system equals the sum total of vulnerabilities on any given network. The smaller the attack surface, the fewer access points you need to protect.

However, the reverse is also true, and therein lies the flaw inherent in this particular system.

The promise of high speeds and low latency through 5G, coupled with advances like AI and edge computing, is changing the way we live, work, and communicate. Similarly, nanotechnology is considered by many to be the next logical step in IoT development, which also benefits from the aforementioned technologies.

However, nanotechnology is also poised to impact IoT in other ways,

Like other emerging technologies, the use of nanotech in cybersecurity is poised to disrupt in the best possible sense of the word.

In addition to making smart home and business devices more accessible and affordable, nanotechnology will disrupt IoT by:

Reducing the size of devices and sensors

Improving data accuracy

Increasing efficiency and sustainability

Further developing biotechnology

A glance at this list of up-and-coming climate tech companies might be a doppelganger for real-life laboratories that will blend nanotech and IoT together while advancing the future of commerce. More specifically, expect nanotechs cybersecurity disruptive force to be noticed in three key areas.

One major block to tech advances is overcoming fear of technology in the public. Although ethical and privacy concerns must first be addressed, the use of nanotechnology will advance customer-facing security through implantable authentication and encryption devices that are virtually impossible to hack or steal. Much more research is needed in this area, but its expected to become mainstream within the next few years. The major hurdle is overcoming public perceptions, biases, and fears.

Improving data and communications security is a top priority for developers and other stakeholders. Advances in this area mostly issue new challenges for hackers to overcome, and its a fun game.

By introducing nanoscale technology to the mix, manufacturers can create quantum chips that are smaller and hardened against breakage. This will prevent leakage from CMOS transistors and provide higher levels of security than you find with existing cryptographic hardware.

For some time, researchers, especially those in the public sector, have been looking for ways to replicate biosystems in computers. Advances in nanotechnology may finally allow them to fully create computers that truly mimic the human brain in structure while infusing it with the advanced data processing power of a supercomputer.

Nanoscale will improve intelligent threat detection by identifying and isolating threats much faster. By pairing nanotech with AI systems, it will also remediate the cybersecurity skills shortage by allowing these systems to proactively identify and shut down potential threats without human intervention.

As it stands now, the average person couldnt even tell you how many IoT devices are connected to their network, let alone how secure they are. Unfortunately, cybercriminals are in the business of locating these devices and probing them for flaws and vulnerabilities.

As technology advances and threats proliferate in correlation, cybersecurity and other IT professionals need to be just as diligent in exploring and incorporating advanced technologies to secure our networks and devices.

We could soon see the transformation of the Internet of Things into the Internet of Nano-Things. That includes all of the ancillary implications, good and bad.

Although much of the potential of nanotechnology is still in development, the possibilities in terms of security, environmental impact, healthcare, and other vital services hold great promise.

Smart packaging preserves food and enhances safety | News | Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health – HSPH News

April 12, 2022Keeping healthy foods fresh and unspoiled often comes with an environmental cost in the form of plastic waste. But it doesnt have to be this way, according to researchers from the Center for Nanotechnology and Nanotoxicology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and colleagues at Singapores Nanyang Technological University. Theyve developed an alternative smart packaging material using biodegradable corn protein, starch, and other naturally derived biopolymers and nature inspired antimicrobials. It keeps harmful bacteria and spoilage microorganisms off of food and plastic pollution out of the environment.

The packaging is made primarily from a type of corn protein called zeinwhich is produced from corn gluten meal, a waste by-product of ethanol productionand other bio-polymers that can be extracted from food waste. It contains a mesh of nanoscale fibers, which were produced through a scalable technology called electrospinning and infused with a combination of natural antimicrobial compounds including thyme oil and citric acid. The fibers were programmed to sense the presence of enzymes from bacteria such as E. Coli and Listeria and increased levels of relative humidity on their surface. In response to these conditions they release miniscule amounts of the antimicrobials to enhance food safety and shelf life.

In an experiment, strawberries that were wrapped in the packaging stayed fresh for seven days before developing mold, compared to strawberries that were kept in typical plastic fruit boxes, which only stayed fresh for four days. And because this protection is provided only when needed, the taste and composition of food in the packages is preserved. The results of the study were published in the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces last October.

There is an urgent need to improve food packaging, according to the studys co-leader Philip Demokritou, adjunct professor of environmental health at Harvard Chan School and director of the Nanotechnology and Nanotoxicology Center. Minimizing spoilage and waste will help provide the worlds growing populationexpected to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050with safe and nutritious food. And plastic is not a benign environmental nuisance. It degrades over the course of its lifecycle, and releases tiny fragments into the environment that end up in our air, water, and food, raising concerns for health.

We need more research in sustainable, biodegradable smart food packaging like this so that manufacturers can start making these materials in a scalable way, said Demokritou. There are a lot of companies focusing on developing sustainable technologies and materials. And Im very optimistic that we will see an escalation of their use in many products in the near future.

The development of this novel packaging material is a result of a collaboration by scientists from the NTU-Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Initiative for Sustainable Nanotechnology (NTU-Harvard SusNano). The five-year Initiative, which brought together more than 30 faculty from Harvard and NTU, funded five research projects focused on assessing the health effects from nano and other advanced materials and developed technologies to address inefficiencies in agriculture and food systems. Demokritou, who was the founding co-director of the initiative, joined the Rutgers School of Public Health and Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute in 2021, where he is Henry Rutgers Chair and Professor in Nanoscience and Environmental Bioengineering.

The patented technology and material used in the smart packaging attracted the interest of industry, and efforts are underway for a potential commercial use, Demokritou said.

In another recent project, researchers at the Harvard Chan School NanoCenter and the Harvard School of Engineering developed a patented technology to synthesize a form of antimicrobial packaging that can be washed off of foods.

Researchers at the Schools NanoCenter are also exploring other ways to enhance food safety and quality, including a nanotechnology-based antimicrobial platform using their engineered water nanostructure technology.

Feel the attraction of zwitterionic Janus particles – Nanowerk

Apr 13, 2022(Nanowerk News) Researchers from The Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology and The Institute of Industrial Science at The University of Tokyo used a new computer simulation to model the electrostatic self-organization of zwitterionic nanoparticles, which are useful for drug delivery (Physical Review Letters, "Impact of charge regulation on self-assembly of zwitterionic nanoparticles"). They found that including transient charge fluctuations greatly increased the accuracy, which may help lead to the development of new self-assembling smart nanomaterials. In ancient Roman mythology, Janus was the god of both beginnings and endings. His dual nature was often reflected in his depiction with two faces. He also lends his name to so-called Janus particles, which are nanoparticles that contain two or more distinct physical or chemical properties on their surface. One promising two-faced solution uses zwitterionic particles, which are spheres with a positively charged side and a negatively charged side.Researchers hope to create self-organizing structures, which can be activated by changes in a solutions salt concentration or pH. However, this kind of bottom-up engineering requires more accurate computer simulations to implement. Now, a team of researchers from The Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology and The Institute of Industrial Science at The University of Tokyo have created a new computer model that incorporates transient fluctuations in the change distributions on the surface of the particles that can give rise to a wider variety of structures, compared with current software.Simulating the dynamic dissociation or association of ionization groups is inherently more challenging, and must be iterated repeatedly until self-consistent results are obtained, first author Jiaxing Yuan says. The researchers showed that the previous method of assuming each of the particles carries a constant charge can give inaccurate results. To simulate the possible transition to compact clusters, instead of exclusively producing elongated strands, the computer needed to include short-lived fluctuations in surface charge. These differences are particularly noticeable at low salt concentration and high electrostatic coupling strength. In living organisms, proteins fold into very specific shapes based in large part on the attraction between the positively and negatively charged regions. In the future, artificially designed particles may be able to self-assemble when triggered by a change in conditions. With zwitterionic particles, we hope to create functional materials with tunable properties, similar to the self-organization of charged proteins, senior author Hajime Tanaka says.

Nanotechnology and medicine: Gold could be the unexpected secret weapon against antibiotic resistance – Times Now

Gold used in nanotechnology to fight microbial resistance  |  Photo Credit: iStock Images

Scientists are looking at new and innovative, even out-of-the-box methods to beat germs at their game of resistance. Mike McRae writes in Science Alertthat filling a germ's pockets with gold could be a handy way to end the infection. The scientific community has been watching helplessly as fast-mutating microbial strains have been putting up a wall of resistance against new medicines found by the medical fraternity. Could the nanotechnology-based gold weaponry turn into a practical antimicrobial therapy?

According to the Hindawi Journal of Nanomaterials, gold nanoparticles have photothermal effects, and modified gold nanoparticles can be a good medium for photothermal treatments to kill bacteria.According to Science Alert, researchers from the Southern University of Science and Technology and Fudan University in China, and the University of Leeds in the UK, recently joined forces to repackage gold nanoclusters to make them more appealing to bacteria and less damaging to our own bodies.

By weaving the gold into two molecules with contrasting levels of electrostatic stickiness, the team built a particle that has the potential to breach into the defences of many common bacterial pathogens but with such finesse that the surrounding tissues of the human body should not be damaged, points out Science Alert.

At first glance, gold might not seem like an obvious treatment for killing germs. Reduced to a speck of fine, nanoscale dust, this heavyweight element can wreak some serious damage. Gold nanoparticles are also excellent drug carriers that can improve the antibacterial effects of loaded antibacterial drugs. After being modified and combined with other antibacterial drugs, gold nanoparticles can also play a better antibacterial role for effective antibacterial strategies against some resistant bacteria.

One way that gold nanoparticles manage this is by facilitating chemical reactions that release oxygen species capable of damaging DNA.

According to Science Alert, another way that gold nanoparticles manage this is by interfering with cell membranes, making them more permeable to various toxic substances, such as antibiotics.

They can also absorb light from a laser with great efficiency, heating up and roasting their surroundings. Unfortunately, such handy ways of cleaning up infections do not always discriminate bacteria from the host, putting our own cells at risk from gold nanoparticle therapies. What is needed is a way to encourage bacteria to scoop up as much of the gold as they can, while ensuring our own cells don't do the same.

Science Alertpresents that inrecent years, engineers have manipulated the behaviour of gold nanoparticles in two ways. One is to precisely control their size. Keeping the particles under two nanometres helps the particles slip through our kidneys better, making for a quicker exit from our bodies. So, the researchers focused on limiting the size of their clusters to just 25 atoms.

According toScience Alert, the second is to incorporate 'sticky' chemical structures called ligands, bestowing various features that allow them to be easily tracked or help control the particle's shape. Tested on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis (MRSE), the augmented gold nanoclusters had a clear impact on the bacteria's ability to aggregate. It also generated reactive oxygen species and affected the integrity of its membranes.

Better still, when then dosed with various antibiotics, the bacterium's numbers dropped. In one case, the dose required to inhibit the MRSE's growth decreased more than 100-fold.Tests on rats with MRSE skin infections helped affirm the gold nanoparticles aided healing without hanging around to become a nuisance.

"By systematically tuning the ratio of the two ligands, we have identified a way of using gold nanoclusters not only to act as effective antimicrobial agents but as a mechanism to enhance the potency of antibiotics which have become ineffective because of bacterial drug resistance," says Dejian Zhou, a chemical engineer from Leeds.

"The research has a significance on the way we should be thinking about responding to antimicrobial resistance."

What Is Nanotechnology and How Does It Create Water Solubl… – marketscreener.com

For the past few years that CBD has been booming, CBD oil has been the standard form that most consumers use to take it. And there's a good reason for that: it's simple, it's versatile, and you can use it in many recipes. But now water soluble CBD is starting to move into the market, and along with it a term that's exciting to some people and a bit scary to others: nanotechnology.

But what is nanotechnology, and why do you need it to make water soluble CBD? Read on to find out, along with where to buy the best water soluble CBD products and how to use them.

If you're an engineer or a science fiction fan, you've probably been hearing about nanotechnology for decades. For the average layperson, it basically means "technology at an incredibly tiny scale."

That's basically true, although the word is a bit more specific than that.

The prefix "nano" is actually Greek for "dwarf," but it acquired a special meaning in the modern era as scientists and engineers started coming up with words to describe numbers and measurements that were either too unimaginably huge or unimaginably small to have names before. One that might sound familiar is "googol," a name made up for 10 to the 100th power, which a certain Internet startup later adopted with a slight change of spelling.

"Nano" was introduced at a scientific meeting in 1947 to mean "a billionth." This led to the coining of "nanometer," or a billionth of a meter. To give you an idea of how small that is, consider how the U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative website puts it: "(I)f a marble were a nanometer, then one meter would be the size of the Earth."

What's so tiny you can measure it in nanometers? Those are basic building blocks of all matter, atoms, and molecules. Legendary physicist Richard Feynman first outlined the idea that technology could manipulate matter at that level of precision back in 1959. Later, in 1974, Japanese science professor Norio Taniguchi coined the term "nanotechnology" to describe certain processes in semiconductor production.

But it wasn't until the 1980s that things really took off because that was when microscopes were developed that could actually see things at the nano scale. Since then, a whole bunch of applications for nanotechnology have been developed. The way that computers have shrunk from room-sized in the 1960s to pocket-sized today owes a lot to nanotechnology. It has also proven useful in many ways for medicine, and that's where it caught the attention of CBD manufacturers.

Just to be clear: over-the-counter CBD and other cannabinoids are not medicine. They haven't been approved by the FDA to treat or prevent any illnesses. But there are certain common ways that your body absorbs whatever you put into it, whether it's medicine, food, nutritional supplements, intoxicants, or anything else. And that's where nanoencapsulation technology comes in.

Nanoencapsulation is a technique that encases teeny tiny bits of a substance in capsules or coatings that are so small they can be measured in nanometers. This was first developed in the drug industry as a way to increase a product's bioavailability.

Bioavailability refers to the percentage of a substance that you consume that makes it into your bloodstream. When you eat or drink something, for instance, it goes through your body's digestive tract, where it gets broken down by acids, enzymes, and the brute strength of your stomach and intestinal muscles.

That's how your body extracts the bits that it needs, like nutrients. But not surprisingly, all that grinding and dissolving can break down some of the beneficial substances along with the unneeded ones. So when scientists talk about the percentage of a substance that's "bioavailable" when consumed in a certain form, they mean the percentage that survives the breakdown process to get into your bloodstream.

Nanoencapsulation can improve a substance's bioavailability if the capsules are made from a material that protects the substance from degradation, but that your body can still absorb. As noted, the drug industry refined the techniques for doing this first to improve the bioavailability of pharmaceuticals. But unsurprisingly, once CBD became a hot business, somebody thought to bring the concept to the new sector.

"Nano CBD" started appearing on the scene a couple of years ago. It uses the same nanoencapsulation technology we just described but encases tiny particles of CBD. CBD companies advertised it as a faster and stronger alternative to the type of CBD you get just from extracting it from hemp and dissolving it in oil.

As with many things to do with CBD, the research is still catching up with the market. There are actually a lot of things that can affect the bioavailability of CBD that scientists are still figuring out. And while early studies on nano CBD are promising, we can't say for certain exactly what the bioavailability of a given CBD product is.

However, it also became apparent to CBD makers that nano CBD had another big advantage - it was potentially water soluble. And that addressed one of CBD's biggest issues: in its natural form, it isn't.

If you're a regular CBD shopper, you may have wondered: Why are CBD oil tinctures the easiest sort of CBD products to find? Why oil?

The reason is embedded in the nature of the CBD molecules themselves. Some kinds of molecules bind to water molecules and so are water soluble, while others bind to fats and are fat soluble. And as we know, oil and water don't mix.

When CBD and other cannabinoids are first extracted from the hemp plant, their form is a crystal. This is not very appetizing, so the practice of dissolving the crystal in an edible oil developed early on the CBD market. Other products, such as edibles and capsules, also use oil as part of their formulation to make the CBD go down easily.

Technically speaking, you can't really make CBD entirely water soluble the way that, say, sugar is water soluble. But you can make it close enough for all practical purposes by breaking it up into tiny particles that disperse in water.

A combination of normally incompatible liquids like this is called an emulsion. The word actually comes from the Latin word for milk, since milk is itself a natural emulsion combining butterfat with water (among other things). You can also create a primitive emulsion when you make salad dressing out of oil and vinegar and shake it up. That does blend them temporarily, but if you leave the dressing to sit, the two substances will separate again.

So in order to create a shelf-stable emulsion, we need to get high-tech. Nano CBD provides the way to make CBD water, CBD drink mixes, and water soluble CBD tinctures.

So that's how to make water soluble CBD in general. But how about the specifics? What kinds of products can you get with water soluble CBD, and what can you use them for?

The first water soluble CBD products that we launched here at cbdMD were the CBD drink mixes. These are powdered drink mixes in different fruit flavors that you can easily blend with water or any water-based beverage.

How did we make them? With a version of nanoencapsulation technology involving Quillaja saponaria, the soapbark tree. The inner bark of this tree is called quillaia, and when ground up, it can be used as a substitute for soap, which tells you something interesting. What does soap do? It breaks down oil and grease and washes it away with water. So you can see the bridge between oil solubility and water solubility.

Despite its name, the bark of the soapbark tree is used less often in soap than as a food additive. It helps keep soft drinks foamy and preserves the moistness in baked goods and puddings. So it's the perfect substance for making an edible CBD product.

cbdMD uses quillaia to make the tiny capsules that break up the CBD extract into bits that disperse in water. The inner part of the shell bonds with the CBD molecules, but the outer surface allows it to be water soluble.

The CBD drink mixes are very tasty, but they are limited by the flavors available. That's why we created a water soluble CBD tincture that you can use in even more ways.

cbdMD's upcoming water soluble CBD tinctures use similar nanotechnology to the drink mixes, but the formulation is naturally going to be different because tinctures are liquid rather than powder. Since using MCT oil like our other tinctures obviously isn't going to work, the primary ingredient in the water soluble tinctures is glycerin.

Glycerin is a substance you've no doubt heard of; it's in food, skin care products, wound care products, vape juice, and even the fuel of some high-powered race cars. It has an astonishing range of applications. So what the heck is it?

Chemically speaking, glycerin is a type of carbohydrate called sugar alcohol - though that's a slightly misleading name because it's not going to get you drunk. It's called that because its molecular structure resembles both sugar and alcohol. It is sweet to the taste, though not as sweet as cane sugar.

Glycerin is super useful for a few reasons. It's a humectant, which means that it attracts water to itself and preserves the moisture, which is why it suits a water soluble product. It's also popular as a thickening agent because it's like honey in its consistency - but with a texture that's slippery rather than sticky.

Glycerin is also mildly antimicrobial, which is why it turns up in topical medicines and as a preservative, though that's less relevant to its use in a CBD tincture. The point is that it's a well-known substance that's quite safe when consumed in reasonable amounts. And while it is a sweet carbohydrate, it has a lower glycemic index than sugar, so you can incorporate it even into a low-carb diet.

While glycerin can come from both animals and plants, we use only vegetable glycerin, so our water soluble CBD tinctures are just as vegan as our other tinctures.

One of water soluble CBD's greatest benefits is its flexibility. Since there's water in nearly everything we eat and drink, you can slip it easily into a wide range of recipes, or you can just take it straight. But let's take it one product at a time.

cbdMD's CBD drink mixes come in convenient single-serve pouches with 25 mg of CBD in each. The simplest way to prepare them is to empty a packet into 8 oz of water, shake it thoroughly, and enjoy!

As much as the fruit flavors would seem like they'd make good popsicles, we advise against freezing a premixed CBD beverage. Using it in hot drinks like tea is fine, however. You can also use the drink mixes in carbonated drinks, though obviously, the shaking part would create a problem. You're best off making the drink like a highball cocktail, shaking up a highly concentrated solution with plain water, and then pouring the carbonated beverage on top.

The flavors of lemonade, kiwi strawberry, peach, and fruit punch are good straight, but you can also get creative with blends. Check out our previous blog with some CBD drink recipes.

Tinctures are the most flexible of all, especially if they're unflavored. If you're taking a tincture straight, you might prefer our lemon flavor, but the sweetness of the glycerin means that even the unflavored version is mildly sweet.

Taking the water soluble tinctures is different from taking CBD oil straight because of its faster absorption. We've always advised holding the CBD oil tincture under your tongue for 30 to 60 seconds before swallowing because that way some of the CBD can get to your bloodstream via the mucous membrane instead of traveling through your digestion.

If you recall our discussion about bioavailability above, you'll understand why we do that. A lot of CBD gets broken down in the digestive process, and what remains takes longer to get to your bloodstream than if it goes through the mucous membrane. So while there's nothing wrong with just swallowing a CBD oil tincture like normal, you'll get slower and more gradual results.

Water soluble CBD doesn't have that problem. Remember that the nanoencapsulation method was developed in the first place to prevent substances from getting broken down. And since your body is mostly made of water already, you don't have to break down a water soluble product to get out the good bits the same way you do with the oil.

So all you have to do is squeeze a dropperfull into your mouth and swallow. Just keep in mind that it's going to come out of the dropper a bit slower, because of that thick glycerin consistency.

But of course, another great thing about water soluble CBD is that you can blend it with water-based products. Our CBD recipe portal includes some beverage ideas that would work great with water soluble CBD, like a CBD Arnold Palmer and CBD kombucha.

After all the talk about bioavailability, you might be wondering how water soluble CBD is going to make you feel. If you take the same amount that you were previously taking of an oil-based CBD product, will it yield stronger results?

Probably, but it's impossible to make hard-and-fast rules about it because everyone's physiology is different. Think of how differently you and your friends can react to drinking alcohol or even eating sugar.

So the best way to figure out how much water soluble CBD you should take is to experiment with it. Try starting with your normal amount of CBD and monitor how you feel. If you feel no immediate difference, you might still want to track your response over a few weeks, because of how CBD can build up in your system over time. Gradually adjust your regimen as needed.

If you have no history with CBD but are thinking of starting with a water soluble version, just start with the recommended daily serving on the container and do the same self-monitoring described above. Try to stick to a consistent daily regimen as much as possible for best results.

Now that you know how to make CBD water soluble, you can cook up some nanotechnology as your next home science project! Just kidding. Nanoencapsulation may be a bit tough to wrap your head around, but it just goes to show what a remarkable age we live in when the stuff of sci-fi dreams is now just a few clicks away. So stay tuned for the launch of our water soluble CBD tinctures, and meanwhile, check out our drink mixes to get a preview!

The party was for SuperAgers, people over the age of 80 that have the cognitive abilities of someone 30 years younger, as part of an ongoing research study. Olshansky, a professor at the Center on Aging at the University of Chicago, felt lucky to be in the rarified presence of the 1 percent of our population whose cognitive abilities do not deteriorate with age.

When I sat around the table with them, if I closed my eyes I couldve been at a roundtable with a bunch of CEOs of major companies, Olshanksky told The Daily Beast. They were that sharp. Their age was completely irrelevant.

The SuperAgers study, run by the Mesulam Center for Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimers Disease at Northwestern University, is part of an emerging body of new research on aging and what a world where we live longer and healthier might look like. Back in the 1500s, humans used to have a life expectancy of 30. Now, life expectancy is about 77, and it might be increasing from there. One May 2021 study in Nature estimated that humans could live until 150. A September 2021 study in Royal Society Open Science journal said there is no upper limit. Other studies say nanotechnology can delay deathin some estimates, by beyond 100 years.

Whatever the final number is, having a large population of seniors could mean later retirement, more artistic contributions, and changing values for Americas youth-obsessed culture. Yet there are also some definite drawbacks to longevity and old age, even if your mind is still sharp as a tack. In a world where social safety nets are not built to handle a growing senior population, and being over 65 comes with the onset of chronic conditions, living longer than youre expected to can put people in a precarious situation. Getting people to live longer is the hard partgetting them to live well in old age is the even harder part.

Before she passed away in 1997, the 122-year-old Jeanne Calment was the oldest person alive. Anthony Davison, co-author of the Royal Society Open Science study, told The Daily Beast reaching that age could be a possibility for more of us.

Davison compared the likelihood of aging until 130 to an annual coin flip. If someone reaches 110, on their birthday, they flip a coin, he said. If it comes up heads they live to 111, if it comes up tails then they're going to die soon. The likelihood of someone who is 110 living until 130 is the chance of getting 20 coin flips all coming up heads. It could happen, said Davison. And if you have a million people flipping coins, then it's quite likely to happen.

Changiz Geula, a research professor at the Mesulam Center, has spent the last ten years co-directing the Northwestern SuperAgers study, and he told The Daily Beast getting labeled a SuperAger isnt easy. Being a SuperAger means you have the mental ability of someone decades younger. Few actually qualify. For a 2017 study, the lab screened over 1,000 people who all considered themselves to have excellent memory. Only 5 percent actually participated in the final research.

Candidates for the SuperAging study get tested on their episodic memory, their ability to remember events that occurred years ago. They also get tested on other cognitive abilities, undergo an MRI test, and take a questionnaire on their psychological well-being. Interestingly, most SuperAgers report maintaining robust social relationships.

After a decade of studying, Geula and his fellow researchers have found that SuperAgers have brains that look 20 to 30 years younger than they should, that their brains are resistant to certain protein interactions known to be signs of Alzheimers disease, and that their brains have higher levels of certain neurons that scientists think are important to communication.

As the worlds population grows, so does the number of SuperAgersand elderly folk across the board. While the pandemic has had an effect on peoples life expectancy (in America it dropped by a whole year) and climate change will have a similar effect on many, peoples lives are still being extended. According to Davison, this is due to the worlds population getting bigger and healthier (especially thanks to lower rates of smoking), and the elimination of certain cancers in Western countries.

In many countries, the oldest are actually among the fastest growing segment of the population, Geula said. When we compare them to the generation that was born in the 20s or 30s, just nutrition alone is a huge factor. Geula pointed out that the millennial generation, with its wellness obsession and unprecedented access to all kinds of vitamins, health supplements, and protein shakes, will be a sort of aging test case on the effect of increased nutrition on life extension.

On its face, that seems like excellent news. But there are some latent problems to consider, because society is simply not built to handle just a large elderly population. In Europe, retirement ages are creeping up because social security systems cant afford to care for such large populations of non-working adults, most requiring large amounts of healthcare. In England, older people are taking part-time jobs because the social safety nets they relied on cant afford to take care of them. Thats a trend we can anticipate, said Davison, People being employed longer, and maybe changing their career pattern entirely later in life.

This increase in seniors will force a reckoning of our cultural values. Economically, if we are only thinking of productivity, then we will run into a problem, Geula said. Not everyone can afford to retire, and the system cannot handle an aging population with increasing health problems. We will have to consider what is our definition of productivity and what are our values as a society.

Nir Barzilai, founding director of the Institute for Aging Research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, interviewed hedge fund manager Irving Kahn when Kahn was 104 years old. (Kahn died in 2015, at the age of 109.) When asked what would happen if his job, managing assets at his $700 million investment firm, was taken away, a still-ruthless Kahn responded that he would just buy it back.

When youre over 100 and youre healthy, like Kahn, life is good, Barzilai told The Daily Beast. What people are unhappy about is being sick. We need to target the aging process. In his view, were asking the wrong questions. Its not how long we live that mattersits how long our health lasts. In wonkier terms, its not lifespan, but healthspan we need to be obsessing aboutand targeting the aging process is key.

This could come in many different forms. The diabetes drug Metformin is thought to potentially slow aging by lowering inflammation and inducing other beneficial cellular effects that slow aging. Resveratrol, found in red wine, is thought to help stimulate the activity of anti-aging proteins in the body. Rapamycin, an immunosuppressant used to help make organ transplants safe, has been shown to help increase longevity in some cases. It may have a similar mechanism to caloric restrictiongoing on a diet without incurring malnutrition. Caloric restriction is fairly well established as a way to increase longevity and bypasses the need for pharmaceuticals or supplements, but it might also result in decreased mental integrity.

Scientists are learning that SuperAgers cortices in the brain (the region between the yellow and red lines) shrink twice as slowly as most peoples' cortices, which may explain why they retain better mental cognition and memory.

Northwestern University

None of these leads have panned out yet as anti-aging breakthroughs. Most people over 60 will develop at least one illness. The older they get, the more illnesses and complications they will acquire. We might live longer these days, but were not necessarily living healthier.

That sentiment hasnt stymied the influx of money funneling into longevity research, especially as tech billionaires and millionaires, now middle-aged, face the prospect of one day dying. In September 2013, Google cofounder Larry Page created Calico, a research lab researching the biology of aging. Peter Thiel is an investor in Unity Biotechnology, a company designing drugs to delay aging in cells. Jeff Bezos has invested in anti-aging startup Altos Labs, which wants to stop aging by directly reprogramming cells themselves. Barzilai himself is hoping to get funding for a study on Metformin.

Perhaps these wealthy investors are doomed to face the realities of old age. As opposed to making an old body young again, Barzilai thinks the real future is in slowing aging in a younger body. In the future, probably the easiest thing to do, will be to take a 20-year-old and give him a treatment once a week or once a month or once a year to basically erase the epigenetics of aging, he said. Then we have a Peter Pan who will live longer than 115.

I think the next 10 years are going to be eye-opening, Barzilai predicts. Were going to increase our healthspan all over the body. Its already happening now.

Not everyone buys into this future. Olshansky thinks all of this talk about slowing aging is nonsense. To suggest that theres no upper limit to human longevity is equivalent to suggesting that theres no limit to how fast we can run, he said. The current world record is 3 minutes, 43 seconds for the one mile run, and it would be essentially impossible for our bodies to trim that time down to two minutes.

Similarly, there are inherent limits to the functions of our body. Our teeth get weaker over time. We have nonreplicating parts of the body, like muscle fibers or neurons. The plasticity of our brainits ability to adapt to changing circumstancesdeteriorates. Aging marches on, said Olshansky. We cannot stop the process but we are searching for ways to influence it.

The SuperAgers are essentially the closest to immortality humans have ever gotten. When Olshansky got to the SuperAgers party, he said that as someone who studies aging for a living, he was impressed at the sight of all these people in one room. Its a wonderful thing to see, he said. It doesn't happen to everyone, but when it does happen, its remarkable.

Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Beetroot Extract – AZoM

The latest research published in the journal Science Advances revealed that the microbes present in various hospitals and textile products are a major cause of death.

The research by Mr. Otvio Augusto and his team has shown that manufacturing antimicrobial textiles for hospitals would be advantageous for the termination of such bacteria and fungi.

The green process of synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is highly beneficial for hospital cotton fabrics.

Beta vulgaris extract was efficiently used for manufacturing such green germ-killing smart textiles which could be used in hospitals for sheets and pillows to prevent the spread of dangerous diseases by contact.

The Silver Nanoparticles utilized for this study were on the scale of 1 to 100 nm. They are synthesized in a reaction medium which is useful for the generation of a stable nucleus.

The step called growing forms larger particles, and the thorough modification of stabilizing components is responsible for particles of various sizes and shapes. Since the chemical as well as physical processes are costly and utilize toxic compounds, the synthesis and utilization of nanoparticles become a great difficulty. Hence, green synthesis is the only viable option.

The green nanotechnology synthesis utilized in this study is mediated by plant extracts, cell extracts, algae, and other biomolecules. The plant extracts are highly appreciated for their cheap and efficient processes. Ionic breakdown in the liquid systemof a metallic substrate is the process for sustainable nanoparticle developmentof AgNPs. Silver ions are reduced to silver and a nucleation process is initiated. This is essential for the stabilization of nanoparticles.

Beta vulgaris beetroot was efficiently utilized. It was cut into 2-3cm long pieces and heated to boiling point. Solution extracts were filtered and stored at a low temperature around 4 C. The Ag nanoparticle synthesis was carried out in the exact proportions of 1:50, 1:25, 1:10, 1:5, and 1:2.

Essential stability analysis was performed in the latest research by using a UV-Vis Spectrophotometer followed by the X-ray spectroscopic analysis by dispersive energy process. Characterization is the next essential step defined in the study, and the TESCAN VEGA3 electron microscope was operated at 200kV for efficient completion of this process. This was followed by the Zeta potential analysis using a stable aqueous dispersion of silver nanoparticles.

The final step involves the validation of antimicrobial properties by using antimicrobial assay, Disk diffusion, Liquid growth inhibition, and MTT assay. All the processes and related steps have been mentioned in the research, providing an insight regarding the advantages and disadvantages of the novel concept.

The latest study showed that the nano extracts had a color change from red-violet to a reddish-brown and grayish-brown color. US-Siv spectrophotometry confirmed the formation of silver nanoparticles.

Samples 1: 2, 1: 5, 1:10, 1:25, and 1:50 showed typical spectra of AgNPs with the maximum obtained at 442 nm, 429 nm, 439 nm, 449 nm, and 431 nm, respectively. This is proof of stabilized silver nanoparticle synthesis with sizes varying from 35 to 80 nm.

The dispersion in hospital and medical-related textiles was observed via the process of scanning electron microscopy. Sedimentation of these particles over the surface of textile components was observed. This process was also implemented for hospital gauze fibers. Two-layered fibers were observed and images were taken for thorough analysis.

This revealed that 1:5 and 1:10 particles had a greater number of nanoparticles in their respective sample. The lesser particles in 1:25 and 1:50 samples were responsible for their decreased reactivity. Transmission Electron microscopy was a crucial step to identify the spherical shape of particles with a size less than 100 nm.

This study tested hospital textiles impregnated with AgNPs against different microorganisms. The 1:2, 1:5, 1:10 samples were effective against all microbes while 1:25 and 1:50 were deemed ineffective. The results also validated the inferior susceptibility of Gram-negative bacteria as compared to gram-positive bacteria. Hence, it is verified that silver nanoparticles affect various cellular chemical processes and are successful against resilient microbes.

The silver nanoparticle incorporation for green synthesis has been proven beneficial and effective, leading to rapid implementation of this technology in various healthcare hospitals and essentially all sectors where clean and germfree components especially textile are a necessity.

However, a few limitations have also been noted, like the complexity of plant extracts and their reduction as well as the variation of components. This study is focused on a single beetroot extract; results would be different from other extracts. However, the efficacy of the process cannot be negated due to these few factors.

In short, this novel technique in Science Advances has truly revolutionized medical care textile usage, and the implementation of nanoparticles has been proven beneficial not only for microbial termination but also for the green-sustainable environment-friendly synthesis process.

Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Beetroot Extract - AZoM

Seven spooky things that people say are in the COVID-19 vaccines but definitely arent – Austin American-Statesman

Samantha Putterman| PolitiFact.com

Just in time for Halloween, claims about whats lurking in the COVID-19 vaccines are getting wilder and spookier.

Theres the "transhumanism nanotechnology" ingredient that will apparently turn all of us into copies of the Terminator. Theres also "graphene oxide," a material that some claimed will straight up kill you. Why didnt Michael Myers think of that?

Rest assured, weve fact-checked this, and its all fake gore.

Heres a look at seven scary things that are not in the vaccines and, as a treat, a list of the rather helpful things that are.

Aluminum. They use it in pickup trucks, food containers and antiperspirants. But in the COVID-19 vaccines? No.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that small amounts of aluminum specifically aluminum salts have been used in vaccines since the 1930s as an adjuvant, which helps elicit a stronger immune response from the body.

But none of the three COVID-19 vaccines currently being used in the U.S. Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, all of which have publicly accessible ingredient lists contain any aluminum.

As for other vaccines, research has showntheir levels of aluminum are so low that they can't easily be absorbed by the body, let alone the brain. There has been no evidence of the aluminum in vaccines causing illness or developmental disorders.

While your cell phone can help Big Brother, or your mother, locate you via 5G networks, the vaccines cannot.

Yet some social media users likened the bubbles of fat in the vaccine to the sort of tracking microchips implanted under a pets skin. Thats a lot of creepy nonsense.

There is no evidence that the COVID-19 vaccines contain technology similar to pet microchips. The lipid nanoparticles used in some of the vaccines are called "nanoparticles" because they are very, very small. They have nothing to do with 5G networks or tracking technology.

This baseless conspiracy theory says that the shots include a technology that changes "what it is to be human."The vaccines dont contain any such thing.

"None of the vaccines contain nanotechnology of any sort, let alone 'transhumanism nanotechnology, which isnt even a thing," Mark Lynas, a visiting fellow at the Alliance for Science and Cornell University, told PolitiFact.

"Nano," as we said earlier, is a term widely used to describe things that are very tiny, and scientists use the prefix more specifically to refer to things on the scale of individual atoms.

A chilling, grainy black-and-white image being shared on social media has been described as a "Trypanosoma Parasite" purportedly observed in Pfizers COVID-19 vaccine. Several variants of the parasite, internet users claimed, are lethal and are one of many causes of acquired immune deficiency syndrome or AIDS.

This is erroneous, on all counts.

Dr. Bobbi Pritt, the director of clinical parasitology at the Mayo Clinic, told us the blurry image likely represents an out-of-focus non-cellular component of the vaccine and doesnt show a Trypanosoma cruzi or any other parasite.

As for the claim that this particular parasite causes AIDS, thats also wrong, she said.

"The only thing that causes AIDS is an infection with the human immunodeficiency virus," she said, "and this cannot be acquired through the Pfizer vaccine."

A popular video claimed that the Pfizer vaccine contains "particles that could germinate and cause illness" and that vitamin supplements could stop this from happening. You can bet someone is selling those supplements online.

Theres no truth to this one either. The ingredients for Pfizer vaccines are chemical components not living organisms.

"Contamination with spores or other microbial material can theoretically happen during production of any biologic, including vaccines," said Volker Mai, associate professor in the epidemiology department at the University of Florida. "However, quality control is extensive and monitoring occurs continuously. Thus, it is highly unlikely that any contaminated batch would make it into the market."

A vaccine turning you into the Marvel villain Magneto? That sounds terrifying (unless thats what you wanted.) But dont worry, the COVID-19 vaccineswont make you more attractive to magnets.

Social media users have shared videos that appear to show magnets sticking to peoples arms where they say they were injected, and claimed this as proof the shots have microchips in them.

But medical experts called the claim utter nonsense.

Al Edwards, an associate professor in biomedical technology at the University of Reading in England, told Newsweekthat because vaccines ingredients are some of the same things that are in the human body, "there is simply no way that injecting a tiny fragment of this material" could make it respond to a magnet. "Most food is made of similar molecules, and eating food doesnt make people magnetic," he said.

A similar claim cites a video showing what looks like small balls connecting and growing on their own. The disturbing clip was described as the COVID-19 vaccines reaction once it hits the bloodstream.

Thats wrong. The video was actually from a 2015 science experiment by the Stanford Complexity Group, an initiative to bringcomplexity scienceto a wider audience, that shows self-organizing wires, which is still weird.

One more time for the people in the back: None of the COVID-19 vaccines contain microchips or metals.

An incendiary video that speaks of murder claims that Pfizers COVID-19 vaccine is dangerously packed with something called graphene oxide.

A Pfizer spokesperson told PolitiFact that while graphene oxide a material made by the oxidation of graphite is used in some vaccines, it is not used at Pfizer andis not in its COVID-19 vaccine.None of the listed ingredients is another name for graphene oxide, and the material doesnt appear in ingredient lists for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines.

The real ingredients are much less likely to keep you up at night.

All three manufacturers of the approved vaccines in the U.S.,Pfizer,ModernaandJohnson & Johnson, have shared their ingredients.

For Moderna and Pfizer, the active ingredient is messenger RNA, which carries genetic information about the coronavirus to the body's cells to help them recognize and produce antibodies against it. Theres no evidence that mRNA is dangerous, and scientists say the material is broken down by the body within days.

Pfizers inactive ingredients include lipids, salts, sugar and saline solution.

The lipids encase the mRNA, the salts help keep the pH, or acidity, of the vaccine close to that of a persons body; and the sugar safeguards the lipids when theyre frozen and stops them from sticking together, according to MITs Technology Review, which spoke with experts to help decode the contents.

Before injection, the vaccine is mixed with the saline solution, just as many intravenously delivered medicines are, the report said.

Modernas ingredient list is very similar, and includes the lipids, salts and sugar, with a slight difference, including the solution for the injection, that may explain the different storage needs for each.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine uses a disabled adenovirus, rather than mRNA, to deliver instructions to produce the coronavirus spike proteins and activate the immune system. The other ingredients are alcohol, citric acid, salts and sugars.

Afull list of ingredientsfor all the vaccines is available on the CDC website.

Nanosensor & Digital Twin Tech Come Together At COP26 To Help Deliver A Circular Economy As Part Of The Race To Zero – Scoop.co.nz

Tuesday, 2 November 2021, 6:59 amPress Release: World Digital Foundation

Deploying billions of highly accurate and securenanosensors interconnected to a global Digital Twin networkcan enable real-time monitorisation of emissions withinurban and agricultural environments.

Nanosensors andDigital Twins are forecast to be pivotal to discussionsbetween international nations and bodies at COP26 inGlasgow, the UK, from October 31st until November 12th andpredicted to have a significant impact on the future ofcarbon tracking.

This technology collaboration willenable global organisations to reward organisations andpeople globally for tracking and managing emissions toreverse Climate Change while holding to account countriesand industries that don't.

Sensors can be positionedin every urban and rural space, including major rainforestsand polluting cities, allowing global carbon emissiontracking with unprecedented real-timeaccuracy.

Digital Twin technology will calculate thecarbon emission data gathered by nanosensors, providing aglobally sharable, highly accurate representation of howcountries, companies, households, and individuals manageemissions in a way that supports the creation of a circulareconomy - a key sustainability strategy for the world aswell as industry leaders to fight climate change.

Thisparticular model for a circular economy is still evolving interms of data and metrics, but indicators suggest thisapproach and enabling technologies such as Nanotechnology, and Digital Twins are vital to holding people to accountwhile rewarding industry, governments, and the public fortheir work in driving down carbon emissions tonet-zero.

Former Brazilian ambassador and diplomat anda Harvard scholar, Arnildo Schildt, has been developing aproject based on this new model and will be presenting thisat the COP26 summit in Glasgow, UK (October 31st to November12th) an event being billed as a catalyst for action andtech adoption in the Climate Change battle.

Thisproject will use nanosensors to track deforestation andpollution to help accurately manage carbon credits andoffsets, enabling the reduction of emissions and highlyaccurate tracking of data on deforestation.

Schildtsaid: "We have been working tirelessly now for two yearsdeveloping a model with governments, the UN, internationalbanks, academics and industry partners as well as investorsto harness the power of Digital Twin and nanosensortechnology to solve two massive challenges for ourenvironment simultaneously.

"We have a delegationgoing to COP26 and will follow this with other partnershipmeetings in the UK, Canada and the US straight after theGlasgow event to make this a reality."

Schildt'sinitiative in vital rural areas mirrors the urban andagricultural work conducted by US-based Cityzenith, whichuses Digital Twin technology to decarbonise the builtenvironment, tracking, managing, and reducing emissions inbuildings across metropolitan areas and major internationalcities as well as linking this to carbon rewards, credits, and other global incentive programs forsustainability.

Cityzenith was referenced by anindependent global research group report from ABI researchon the 28th of October, naming the company one of three, including The Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Vodafone, thatcan deliver the infrastructure required for a functionalcircular economy.

Currently, cities generate 70% ofworld emissions. Cityzeniths international CleanCities Clean Future initiative has major worldcities joining the program, using its Digital Twin platformSmartWorldOS to reduce carbon emissions in buildings by50-100%, operating costs by 35% and increase productivity by20%, another independent report by Ernstand Young report on Digital Twins aligns withthis.

Las Vegas and New York were the first two citiesto sign up, with projects in Phoenix and others expected tofollow over the next few months.

Cityzenith CEOMichael Jansen said: "We are confident that the Clean Cities Clean Future initiative will demonstrate the combinedpower of Digital Twin and IoT technology to transformmobility, walkability, and emissions/air pollution, whilelinking all of this to carbon rewards and other carbonrelated incentives via one interconnected Digital Twinplatform.

"And COP26 can play a huge role in bringingthe climate crisis into the public spotlight, byacknowledging and backing technologies such as Digital Twinsand nanotechnology to make a difference in the fight toprotect the planet."

The UK will also bring a nationalDigital Twin program to the summit through Anglian Water,BT, and UK Power Networks, which have partnered to fosterbetter outcomes for the built environment.

The projectaims to deliver an Information Management Framework whichcan ensure secure, resilient data sharing and effectiveinformation management. At the same time, the programidentifies a range of benefits to society, business, theenvironment, and the broader economy.

Co-Founder ofthe World Nano Foundation, Paul Sheedy, said:

"Nanotechnologies such as nanosensors andquantum dots can track and monitor anything, holding andtransmitting infinite amounts of secure data around theworld.

"Combining nanotechnology with advanced DigitalTwin platforms is game-changing for the UNs SustainableDevelopment Goals and ESG investors that support such impactinvesting."

Nanotechnology and Digital Twins were bothnamed in 2021 as the top5 tech growth sectors forecast to quadruple over thenext five years; each sector is predicted to enjoy acombined growth of more than 400% in thattime.

On-water creation of conducting MOF nanosheets – Nanowerk

Oct 28, 2021(Nanowerk News) Oil and water do not mix, but what happens where oil and water meet? Or where air meets liquid? Unique reactions occur at these interfaces, which a team of researchers based in Japan used to develop the first successful construction of uniform, electrically conductive nanosheets needed for next-generation sensors and energy production technologies. The research collaboration from Osaka Prefecture University, the Japan Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute and the University of Tokyo published their approach in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces ("Uniaxially Oriented Electrically Conductive Metal-organic Framework Nanosheets Assembled at Air/Liquid Interfaces").Simple spreading of droplets containing molecular components on the surface of water leads to spontaneous formation of nanostructures with very high electrical conduction. (Image: Rie Makiura, Osaka Prefecture University)"We have known for a long time that oil forms a large and uniform film on the surface of water understanding and using this familiar phenomenon could lead to energy-saving processes," said corresponding author Rie Makiura, Associate Professor in Department of Materials Science, Osaka Prefecture University. "By utilizing a combination of raw materials at a similar interface, we succeeded in creating functional materials with advanced three-dimensional nanostructures that conduct electricity."These materials are metal-organic frameworks, which are microporous and composed of metal ions and organic linkers that are highly organized. Called MOFs, they have myriad potential applications from nanotechnologies to life sciences, according to Makiura, but one unrealized property holds them back from realized use most fabricated MOFs do not conduct electricity well."In order to utilize the superior features of conductive MOFs in such applications as sensors and energy devices, the fabrication and integration of ultrathin films with defined pore size, well-controlled growth direction and film thickness are a necessity and have been actively sought," Makiura said. Most previous MOF thin-film development involves exfoliating layers from larger crystals and placing them on a substrate. According to Makiura, however, this process is complicated and often results in thick, non-uniform sheets that are not highly conductive. To develop ultrathin and uniform conductive nanosheets, she and her team decided to flip the approach. They started spreading a solution containing organic linkers on aqueous solution of metal ions. Once in contact, the substances begin assembling their components in a hexagonal arrangement. Over an hour, the arrangement continued as nanosheets form where the liquid and air meet. After completion of the nanosheet formation, the researchers used two barriers to compress the nanosheets into more dense and continuous state. It's a streamlined approach to produce incredibly thin nanosheets with highly organized crystalline structures, according to Makiura. The researchers confirmed the uniform structure via microscopic and x-ray crystallographic analysis. The visualized tightly ordered crystals also indicated the electrical properties of the material, since the crystals were uniformly in contact in each sheet, which also facilitated close contact between sheets. The researchers tested this by transferring nanosheets to a silicon substrate, adding gold electrodes and measuring the conductivity."Although it was not easy to evaluate the ultra-thin films, we were delighted when we were able to prove that it had a three-dimensional nanostructure and high electrical conductivity," said first author Takashi Ohata, a doctoral student supervised by Makiura. The researchers are now studying how various parameters affect the nanosheet morphology, with the goal of developing a controllable and tunable methodology to create high-quality nanosheets with targeted electronic properties."Our versatile and simple bottom-up assembly of suitable molecular building components at the air/liquid interface into an extended architecture realizes the creation of a perfectly oriented, electrically conductive crystalline nanosheet," Makiura said. "The new finding further enhances the potential of the air/liquid interfacial synthesis to create a wide variety of nanosheets for real use in many potential applications, including for energy creation devices and catalysts."
