Nano-chip promises to heal organs at a touch – Cosmos

Injured tissues can be repaired and damaged organs healed using a new nanotech device that adapts a patients own skin to generate stem cells, according to a paper published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

Researchers from Ohio State University call the new technology tissue nanotransfection (TNT).

They say TNT which is basically a lab on a chip can adapt skin cells to change into any type of tissue required, which can then be introduced to injured or degenerated areas. They claim a success rate of 98%.

With this technology we can convert skin cells into elements of any organ with just one touch, says co-author Chandan Sen. This process only takes less than a second and is non-invasive, and then you're off. The chip does not stay with you, and the reprogramming of the cell starts. Our technology keeps the cells in the body under immune surveillance, so immune suppression is not necessary."

Lead author Daniel Gallego-Perez says the new technology comprises two elements: the nanotech chip designed to introduce reprogrammed DNA into existing adult cells; and a specific biological cargo that induces the cells to change from one type to another.

The device works using a small electrical charge.

It does not require any laboratory-based procedures, according to Gallego-Perez, and can be used at the point of care a doctors office, say, or an outpatient clinic.

The paper describes experiments on mice and pigs. These included using the device to act upon badly injured legs that lacked blood flow. One week after the application of TNT, vascular vessels reappeared. Within a fortnight flow was back within normal parameters.

In a second experiment, skin cells were converted into nerve cells and introduced into the brains of mice crippled by stroke.

Says Sen: By using our novel nanochip technology, injured or compromised organs can be replaced. We have shown that skin is a fertile land where we can grow the elements of any organ that is declining.

The concept is very simple, adds co-author James Lee: As a matter of fact, we were even surprised how it worked so well. In my lab, we have ongoing research trying to understand the mechanism and do even better. So this is the beginning, more to come.

Lee, Sen and Gallego-Perez were part of a group of researchers that lodged a patent application in 2016 for an earlier iteration of TNT: a device that enables compositions and methods for reprogramming somatic cells into induced endothelial cells.

With its third quarter results due on Thursday, Haywood analyst Pardeep Sangha thinks Nanotech Security (TSXV:NTS) will deliver its first-ever quarter of positive EBITDA.

On August 3, after market close, Nanotech will report its Q3, 2017 results. Sangha expects the company will post EBITDA of $100,000 on revenue of $2.8-million, a topline that would be up 145 per cent over the $1.2-million in revenue the company generated in the same period last year. Sanghas targets are in-line with the street consensus of $300,000 in EBITDA on revenue of $2.7-million.

Sangha says he thinks this will be a historic quarter for Nanotech.

We are expecting Nanotech to achieve its first quarter of positive EBITDA in Q3FY17 due to the increase in revenue and higher gross margins, the analyst says. He adds he will be on the companys conference call, listening for whether or not management reiterates its guidance to double revenue in fiscal 2017, on the progress of a $30-million development contract, and for sales pipeline activity, including a tax stamp opportunity in India.

In a research update to clients today, Sangha maintained his Buy rating and one-year price target of $2.00 on Nanotech Security, implying a return of 57.5 per cent at the time of publication.

Sangha thinks Nanotech will generate Adjusted EBITDA of negative $200,000 on revenue of $10.0-million in fiscal 2017. He expects those numbers will improve to EBITDA of positive $4.6-million on a topline of $21.5-million the following year.

One way to evaluate the progress trend of the countries active in nanotechnology is the overall analysis of patent documents. In this case, the number of annually published patents in the field of nanotechnology can be deemed as one of the most significant indicators.

In accordance with the definition supposed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO/TS 18110) in 2015, the inventions whose one of claims is at least related to nanotechnology or named with one of the nanotechnology-related classification codes in the International Classification of Patents (IPCs) such as B82, are known as nanotechnology patents. Two of the world's most authentic patent publication offices include USPO and Europe Patent Office (EPO) by which more than half of the nanotechnology-oriented inventions are published throughout the world.

According to INIC's report based on theStatNanos reportfrom the patent database Orbit, in the first six months of 2017, nearly 6400 applications have been recorded by USPO and EPO for the nanotechnology-related patents, whereas 5525 cases are published by USPO.

More than half of these applications, i.e. 2814 cases are owned by the US companies and innovators. After the US as a front-runner, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China have also obtained the next statuses, respectively.

In addition, Germany and France have been ranked sixth and seventh. The presence of four countries from East Asia among the top five countries in this categorization indicates that most of East Asian's inventors and assignees pay more attention to the US nanotechnology market than other countries.

In 2017, Iran has published 13 applications for nanotechnology patents at USPTO and ranked 22nd among innovative countries, i.e. a one-step climb in its global ranking compared to the last year. It is noteworthy that in 2017, about a quarter ofIran's total published patent applications are related toNanotechnology. In 2016, Iran has been ranked 23rdat USPTO by publishing 27 patent applications and 10 granted nanotechnology patents.

Curcumins properties mirror those of other botanicals, exhibiting low solubility in water and poor bioavailability and stability, especially at pH values at 6.0 or below.

Researchers have persevered with curcumin, a component of the common spice turmeric, as a wealth of studies in the past have pointed towards a substantial anti-cancer ability without cytotoxic effects.

The team from the University of Central Florida began by packing cerium oxide nanoparticles with curcumin and coating them with dextran that extend their stay within the hosts circulation system.

These nanoparticles were then test in cell lines of a tumour cell, known as MYCN-amplified, as well as non-amplified tumour cell.

The nanoparticles were found to induce substantial cell death in tumour cells (up to a 2-fold and a 1.6-fold decrease in cell viability for MYCN-upregulated and normal expressing cell lines, respectively).

Equally encouraging was production of minor toxic traces in healthy cells with no toxicity recorded at 100 M.

The use of nanoparticles is a relatively recent cost-effective vehicle approach for the treatment of disease, in particular, the use of cerium oxide nanoparticle (CNPs) with cytoprotective/toxic character.

Nanoparticles, such as CNPs, have the advantage of superior linkage with various small molecules to assist with their delivery to diseased cells.

Additionally, a previous study has also identified treatment with curcumin-complexed nanoceria can induce a further decrease in disease cell viability when compared to dextran-coated CNPs.

The major sticking point in nanotechnologys use in therapeutic activity centres on the potential risks such nanoscopic material may have on the host.

Certain nanoparticles have shown negative effects on tissues including inflammation and oxidative stress.

Other materials only show toxicity at the nanoscale. One experiment demonstrated that single-walled carbon nanotubes inhibited human embryo kidney cell growth and negatively impact on cell growth and cell turnover.

In 2001, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published its guidance on risk assessment concerning potential risks arising from applications of nanoscience and nanotechnologies to food and feed.

The agency concluded that engineered nanomaterial (ENM) was a field under fast development, characterised by several uncertainties related to the identification, characterisation and detection of ENM.

Takeda and BioSurfaces have signed an agreement to develop medical devices for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. The Japanese pharma will contribute its gastroenterology know-how, while the devicemaker will bring its nanomaterial technology to the table.

Fisker Nanotech Joint Venture Ends – The Drive – The Drive

The joint venture between upcoming battery technology company Nanotech and Fisker has fizzled but the two groups are still in "friendly" talks, according to Automotive News.

UPDATE (July 26, 1:35 p.m. EST): This story has been updated for accuracy and clarity purposes. It previously stated that Nanotech would not providing battery technology for the upcoming EMotion and has since been updated to reflect that the joint venture between the two companies has been abandoned.

Fisker joined together with Nanotech Energy to engineer and produce the Graphene battery packs, according to Auto News. The company also made claims of the supercapacitors allowing for a range of 400 miles and a charge time of just nine minutes, but just weeks ahead of the official reveal, Fisker announced that the company would move forward with using Lithium Ion batteries to accomplish its (still promised) 400-mile range.

Currently, Tesla's Model S holds the largest battery pack in a consumer car at 100 kWh. The 100D achieves 335 miles on a single charge, something which Fisker looks to improve upon to reach. Meaning either the vehicle would have to find ways to be extremely efficient, or the battery pack would need to be pack-in more 20 percent more power to provide a denser amount of energy without increase significantly in weight or size.

Fisker also mentions having "9 min fast charging" in the above Tweet. Using supercapacitors, maybe, but current battery technology wouldn't allow for a full charge at this rapid pace, especially without a very sophisticated cooling system. This figure was actually revealed to be nine minutes to reach 100 miles of range, or 25 percent battery capacity, in the original press release. Fisker's site has now been updated to claim 125 miles of range, or 32 percent charge, in the same amount of time. Charging times like this would need to use one of Tesla's V3 superchargers or the even more rare Porsche variants to provide 350 kWh sustained rates. Someone at home would not be able to reach this figure.

Fisker says EMotion battery pack will be the highest energy densityin partnership with LG.

When Henrik Fisker announced the EMotion electric car nine months ago, one of the stronger points of the promised specs was a 400 miles range via:

a new battery technology using graphene, with battery packs produced by Fisker Nanotech, a joint venture between Fisker Inc. and Nanotech Energy Inc.

But as it turns out, Fisker will be using what it calls its proprietaryUltraPack with LG Chem battery cells inside(seeminglylike just about everybody else).

So the question is: what happened with the breakthrough technology?

This cell from LG Chem, its their latest new cell and we have done our own testing of that cell and verified that it will give us the power we need and the capability of fast charging, Fisker said.

And so, theFisker Nanotech joint venture has come to an end.

The official version of the split is that Nanotech Energy doesnt want to focus solely on single project, which would be required FiskersEMotion timeframe.

In order to meet the timetable for Henrik Fisker, we would have had to just focus on that and that alone, Jack Kavanaugh, chairman and acting CEO of Nanotech Energy, who had been named to lead the joint venture, told Automotive News. It wasnt right for us as a company to just focus on one thing.

Kavanaugh said Nanotech is speaking with several companies both inside and outside automotive about bringing its battery technology to market, following independent testing beginning at the end of the summer.

Were focusing on auto, computer, cell phone, solar, aerospace and other things having to do Internet, medical and power tool, he said. They all have slightly different requirements.

Fisker EMotion

Fisker and Nanotech apparently will stay in touch to do business together in the future, but thatwould be now years away, as no new mass-market Fisker models have even been sketched, andthe EMotion is planned for 2019.

There is yet a third chapter toFiskers battery approach; and that is the internal development of a solid state-type battery, but those are still 5-7 years away according to Henrik Fisker:

We are enhancing and expediting our efforts in solid-state technology and will be announcing our recent developments and partnerships on the near future, Fisker said in a follow-up email after a recent phone interview.

The bottom line is that LG Chem can do it now, and they do it the cheapest so fancier tech and radical solutions (for current projects) have been put on hiatus by most everyone in the industry.

Clothes intertwined with nanotech will treat eczema | Horizon: the … – Horizon magazine

As people are getting older, they have more sensitive skin, so there is a need to develop new products for skin treatment, said Dr Carla Silva, chief technology officer at the Centre for Nanotechnology and Smart Materials (CENTI) in Portugal.

This increased sensitivity can lead to painful bacterial infections such as dermatitis, otherwise known as eczema. Current treatments use silver-based or synthetic antibacterial elements, but these can create environmentally harmful waste and may have negative side effects.

To combat these bacterial infections in an eco-friendly way the EU-funded SKHINCAPS project is combining concentrated plant oil with nanotechnology.

Their solution puts these so-called essential oils into tiny capsules that are hundreds of times smaller than the width of a human hair. Each one is programmed to release its payload only in the presence of the bacteria that cause the skin infections.

As people are getting older, they have more sensitive skin, so there is a need to develop new products for skin treatment.

This means that each capsule is in direct contact with the affected skin as soon as an infection occurs, increasing the effectiveness of the treatment.

According to Dr Silva, who is also project coordinator of SKHINCAPS, the nano-capsules are attached to the clothing material using covalent bonding, the strongest chemical bond found in nature. This ensures the capsules survive the washing machine and that they are invisible to whoever is wearing them.

This nanotechnology has a lifespan equal to that of the garment, though the active ingredients contained in the nano-capsules will run out earlier depending on the extent of the skin infection, and thereby on how much of the treatment is released when the clothing is worn.

The nano-capsules will prove invaluable for chronic eczema sufferers and those with high levels of stress, as well as the elderly and diabetics, who are particularly vulnerable to developing such infections.

And its not just essential oils that could be held in the capsules.

The project is also demonstrating the use of nano-capsules loaded with paraffin, a waxy solid with the ability to absorb and release energy, in thermal clothing. The melting or crystallisation point of paraffin is around the temperature of human skin, meaning that the capsules can keep users cool by absorbing energy as the paraffin melts, or warm them up by releasing energy when it crystallises again.

This could not only improve the day-to-day comfort of those less able to control their body temperatures, such as young children, but also help sportspeople to control their temperature better while exercising.

SKHINCAPS is also adding nano-capsules loaded with vitamins and antioxidants to create anti-ageing cosmetics. The shell of this type of nano-capsule will protect their contents from decay due to sunlight exposure or change in temperature, releasing the anti-ageing ingredients only when they come into contact with skin at the right temperature and pH, maximising their effectiveness.

Cosmetics

Another EU-funded project developing nano-cosmetics is PEPTICAPS. They are putting vitamins, such as A, B, C and D, as well as antioxidants, inside nano-capsules to repair skin damage caused by chemical or sun exposure.

Dr Damien Dupin, the head of the biomaterials unit at IK4-CIDETEC, a research centre in Spain, is the project coordinator of PEPTICAPS, and highlights the importance of protecting ourselves in the chemical-rich world we live in.

In everything we are touching now there are chemical products, he said. For example, latex gloves fifty years ago no one used them, now everyone does and some people get redness and itching.

PEPTICAPS nano-capsules are filled with a special cocktail of vitamins that can protect or repair skin when exposed to harmful chemicals, but they dont release them until the conditions outside the capsule require them to do so.

This occurs when there is a change in pH and/or the release of an enzyme when skin irritation occurs. They could be used in creams, lotions and facial masks to help healthy skin recover after chemical or sunlight damage.

The project has been testing the nano-capsules on a laboratory-grown epidermis, an important layer of the skin, made from human skin cells donated by patients after cosmetic surgery. One advantage of this approach is that the skin layer can be irritated in the same way as real skin, providing realistic and validated results, without using animal testing.

The team have been able to show that their treatment is more efficient and penetrates deeper into the epidermis than products currently available in shops. The PEPTICAPSproject expects the first cosmetic products to contain the nano-capsules to be available by 2019, in time to make SKHINCAPS a possible competitor.

Its project coordinator, Professor Chiara Vitale Brovarone at the Politecnico di Torino, Italy, said: We hope that MOZART nano-matrices will offer a significant reduction in the number of non-healing patients.

Much of the work carried out by the project so far has focussed on the development of a wide platform of nano-matrices and on fine-tuning how and when they dissolve to provide the best possible targeted treatment. The MOZART consortium is aiming for a commercially viable product by 2023.

Nanotechnology is increasingly being used in products all around us, from cosmetics and building materials to electronics and toothpaste.

Across Europe, hundreds of institutions are working together to look at how to monitor exposure, manage the risks and advise on what regulations may be needed under the EUs NanoSafety Cluster.

The European Commission has approved an international collaborative grant, expected to be in excess of 12million, to Scientists at Swansea University Medical School who will lead the development of tests to prevent the use of animals when assessing safety concerns surrounding nanotechnology a field with potential to enhance crucial aspects of our lives pending proper investigation into associated risks.

Awarded as part of the Horizon2020 scheme, the project, Physiologically Anchored Tools for Realistic nanOmateriaL hazard aSsessment (PATROLS), involves a total of 26 partners spread across 14 countries through Europe and across the globe including Canada, Japan, Korea and the US.

Project lead Shareen Doak, Professor of Genotoxicology & Cancer at the Swansea University Medical School explained: Nanotechnology promises significant scientific, economic and societal benefits, but commercialisation and growth are threatened by safety uncertainties. Several problems currently exist in the field of nanosafety testing: standard non-animal tests are unreliable for nanomaterials, so there is a greater emphasis on evaluating their safety in animals. However animal tests are also unsuitable as they are expensive, time-consuming, and are associated with substantial moral concerns. Additionally, these tests do not predict the consequences of long term exposure on both human health and the environment.

PATROLS will address these limitations by providing state-of-the-art 3D culture models of the human lung, gastrointestinal tract and liver. The project will also deliver advanced testing methods for environmental safety testing and robust computational models that will allow us to more accurately predict human health and environmental safety based on data generated in cell culture, removing the need to test on animals. Exposure under realistic conditions (low concentrations over extended periods of time) will be applied to human cell culture to understand the true risk associated with nanomaterials in consumer products.

The PATROLS project is scheduled to commence in autumn 2017 and will run for 3.5 years.
