Present methods require use of massive computational power (as the BBP does with IBM's Blue Gene Supercomputer) to use the essentially classical computing architecture for serial deduction of the quantum mechanical processes involved in ab initio protein structure prediction. If necessary, should the quantum computer become a reality, its capacity for exactly such rapid calculations of quantum mechanical physics may well help the effort by reducing the required computational power per physical size and energy needs, as Markram warns would be needed (and thus why he thinks it would be difficult, besides unattractive) should an entire brain's simulation, let alone emulation (at both cellular and molecular levels) be feasibly attempted. Reiteration may also be useful for distributed simulation of a common, repeated function (e.g., proteins).

Ultimately, nano-computing is projected by some[citation needed] to hold the requisite capacity for computations per second estimated necessary, in surplus. If Kurzweil's Law of Accelerating Returns (a variation on Moore's Law) shows itself to be true, the rate of technological development should accelerate exponentially towards the technological singularity, heralded by the advent of viable though relatively primitive mind uploading and/or "strong" (human-level) AI technologies, his prediction being that the Singularity may occur around the year 2045.[5]

The structure of a neural network is also different from classical computing designs. Memory in a classical computer is generally stored in a two state design, or bit, although one of the two components is modified in dynamic RAM and some forms of flash memory can use more than two states under some circumstances. Gates inside central processing units will often also use this two state or digital type of design as well. In some ways a neural network or brain could be thought of like a memory unit in a computer, but with an extremely vast number of states, corresponding with the total number of neurons. Beyond that, whether the action potential of a neuron will form, based upon the summation of the inputs of different dendrites, might be something that is more analog in nature than that which happens in a computer. One great advantage that a modern computer has over a biological brain, however, is that the speed of each electronic operation in a computer is many orders of magnitude faster than the time scales involved for the firing and transmission of individual nerve impulses. A brain, however, uses far more parallel processing than exists in most classical computing designs, and so each of the slower neurons can make up for it by operating at the same time.

There are many ethical issues concerning mind uploading. Viable mind uploading technology might challenge the ideas of human immortality, property rights, capitalism, human intelligence, an afterlife, and the Abrahamic view of man as created in God's image. These challenges often cannot be distinguished from those raised by all technologies that extend human technological control over human bodies, e.g. organ transplant. Perhaps the best way to explore such issues is to discover principles applicable to current bioethics problems, and question what would be permissible if they were applied consistently to a future technology. This points back to the role of science fiction in exploring such problems, as powerfully demonstrated in the 20th century by such works as Brave New World and Nineteen Eighty-Four, each of which frame current ethical problems in a future environment where those have come to dominate the society.

Another issue with mind uploading is whether an uploaded mind is really the "same" sentience, or simply an exact copy with the same memories and personality. Although this difference would be undetectable to an external observer (and the upload itself would probably be unable to tell), it could mean that uploading a mind would actually kill it and replace it with a clone. Some people would be unwilling to upload themselves for this reason. If their sentience is deactivated even for a nanosecond, they assert, it is permanently wiped out. Some more gradual methods may avoid this problem by keeping the uploaded sentience functioning throughout the procedure.

True mind uploading remains speculative. The technology to perform such a feat is not currently available, however a number of possible mechanisms, and research approaches, have been proposed for developing mind uploading technology.

Since the function of the human mind, and how it might arise from the working of the brain's neural network, are poorly understood issues, many theoretical approaches to mind uploading rely on the idea of emulation. Rather than having to understand the functioning of the human mind, the structure of underlying neural network is captured and simulated with a computer system. The human mind then, theoretically, is generated by the simulated neural network in an identical fashion to it being generated by the biological neural network.

These approaches require only that we understand the nature of neurons and how their connections function, that we can simulate them well enough, that we have the computational power to run such large simulations, and that the state of the brain's neural network can be captured with enough fidelity to create an accurate simulation.

A possible method for mind uploading is serial sectioning, in which the brain tissue and perhaps other parts of the nervous system are frozen and then scanned and analyzed layer by layer, thus capturing the structure of the neurons and their interconnections[6]. The exposed surface of frozen nerve tissue would be scanned (possibly with some variant of an electron microscope) and recorded, and then the surface layer of tissue removed (possibly with a conventional cryo-ultramicrotome if scanning along an axis, or possibly through laser ablation if scans are done radially "from the outside inwards"). While this would be a very slow and labor intensive process, research is currently underway to automate the collection and microscopy of serial sections[7]. The scans would then be analyzed, and a model of the neural net recreated in the system that the mind was being uploaded into.

There are uncertainties with this approach using current microscopy techniques. If it is possible to replicate neuron function from its visible structure alone, then the resolution afforded by a scanning electron microscope would suffice for such a technique[7]. However, as the function of brain tissue is partially determined by molecular events (particularly at synapses, but also at other places on the neuron's cell membrane), this may not suffice for capturing and simulating neuron functions. It may be possible to extend the techniques of serial sectioning and to capture the internal molecular makeup of neurons, through the use of sophisticated immunohistochemistry staining methods which could then be read via confocal laser scanning microscopy[citation needed].

A more advanced hypothetical technique that would require nanotechnology might involve infiltrating the intact brain with a network of nanoscale machines to "read" the structure and activity of the brain in situ, much like the electrode meshes used in current brain-computer interface research, but on a much finer and more sophisticated scale. The data collected from these probes could then be used to build up a simulation of the neural network they were probing, and even check the behavior of the model against the behavior of the biological system in real time.

In his 1998 book, Mind children, Hans Moravec describes a variation of this process. In it, nanomachines are placed in the synapses of the outer layer of cells in the brain of a conscious living subject. The system then models the outer layer of cells and recreates the neural net processes in whatever simulation space is being used to house the uploaded consciousness of the subject. The nanomachines can then block the natural signals sent by the biological neurons, but send and receive signals to and from the simulated versions of the neurons. Which system is doing the processing biological or simulated can be toggled back and forth, both automatically by the scanning system and manually by the subject, until it has been established that the simulation's behavior matches that of the biological neurons and that the subjective mental experience of the subject is unchanged. Once this is the case, the outer layer of neurons can be removed and their function turned solely over to the simulated neurons. This process is then repeated, layer by layer, until the entire biological brain of the subject has been scanned, modeled, checked, and disassembled. When the process is completed, the nanomachines can be removed from the spinal column of the subject, and the mind of the subject exists solely within the simulated neural network.

Alternatively, such a process might allow for the replacement of living neurons with artificial neurons one by one while the subject is still conscious, providing a smooth transition from an organic to synthetic brain - potentially significant for those who worry about the loss of personal continuity that other uploading processes may entail. This method has been likened to upgrading the whole internet by replacing, one by one, each computer connected to it with similar computers using newer hardware.

While many people are more comfortable with the idea of the gradual replacement of their natural selves than they are with some of the more radical and discontinuous mental transfer, it still raises questions of identity. Is the individual preserved in this process, and if not, at what point does the individual cease to exist? If the original entity ceases to exist, what is the nature and identity of the individual created within the simulated neural network, or can any individual be said to exist there at all? This gradual replacement leads to a much more complicated and sophisticated version of the Ship of Theseus paradox.

It may also be possible to use advanced neuroimaging technology (such as Magnetoencephalography) to build a detailed three-dimensional model of the brain using non-invasive and non-destructive methods. However, current imaging technology lacks the resolution needed to gather the information needed for such a scan.

Such a process would leave the original entity intact, but the existence, nature, and identity of the resulting being in the simulated network are still open philosophical questions.

Another recently conceived possibility[citation needed] is the use of genetically engineered viruses to attach to synaptic junctions, and then release energy-emitting molecular compounds, which could be detected externally, and used to generate a functional model of the synapses in question, and, given enough time, the whole brain and nervous system.

An alternate set of possible theoretical approaches to mind uploading would require that we first understand the functions of the human mind sufficiently well to create abstract models of parts, or the totality, of human mental processes. It would require that strong AI be not only a possibility, but that the techniques used to create a strong AI system could also be used to recreate a human type mentality.

Such approaches might be more desirable if the abstract models required less computational power to execute than the neural network simulation of the emulation techniques described above.

Another theoretically possible method of mind uploading from organic to inorganic medium, related to the idea described above of replacing neurons one at a time while consciousness remained intact, would be a much less precise but much more feasible (in terms of technology currently known to be physically possible) process of "cyborging". Once a given person's brain is mapped, it is replaced piece-by-piece with computer devices which perform the exact same function as the regions preceding them, after which the patient is allowed to regain consciousness and validate that there has not been some radical upheaval within his own subjective experience of reality. At this point, the patient's brain is immediately "re-mapped" and another piece is replaced, and so on in this fashion until, the patient exists on a purely hardware medium and can be safely extricated from the remaining organic body.

However, critics contend[citation needed] that, given the significant level of synergy involved throughout the neural plexus, alteration of any given cell that is functionally correspondent with (a) neighboring cell(s) may well result in an alteration of its electrical and chemical properties that would not have existed without interference, and so the true individual's signature is lost. Revokability of that disturbance may be possible with damage anticipation and correction (seeing the original by the particular damage rendered unto it, in reverse chronological fashion), although this would be easier in a stable system, meaning a brain subjected to cryosleep (which would imbue its own damage and alterations).[citation needed]

It has also been suggested (for example, in Greg Egan's "jewelhead" stories[8]) that a detailed examination of the brain itself may not be required, that the brain could be treated as a black box instead and effectively duplicated "for all practical purposes" by merely duplicating how it responds to specific external stimuli. This leads into even deeper philosophical questions of what the "self" is.

On June 6, 2005 IBM and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne announced the launch of a project to build a complete simulation of the human brain, entitled the "Blue Brain Project".[9] The project will use a supercomputer based on IBM's Blue Gene design to map the entire electrical circuitry of the brain. The project seeks to research aspects of human cognition, and various psychiatric disorders caused by malfunctioning neurons, such as autism. Initial efforts are to focus on experimentally accurate, programmed characterization of a single neocortical column in the brain of a rat, as it is very similar to that of a human but at a smaller scale, then to expand to an entire neocortex (the alleged seat of higher intelligence) and eventually the human brain as a whole.

It is interesting to note that the Blue Brain project seems to use a combination of emulation and simulation techniques. The first stage of their program was to simulate a neocortical column at the molecular level. Now the program seems to be trying to create a simplified functional simulation of the neocortical column in order to simulate many of them, and to model their interactions.

With most projected mind uploading technology it is implicit that "copying" a consciousness could be as feasible as "moving" it, since these technologies generally involve simulating the human brain in a computer of some sort, and digital files such as computer programs can be copied precisely. It is also possible that the simulation could be created without the need to destroy the original brain, so that the computer-based consciousness would be a copy of the still-living biological person, although some proposed methods such as serial sectioning of the brain would necessarily be destructive. In both cases it is usually assumed that once the two versions are exposed to different sensory inputs, their experiences would begin to diverge, but all their memories up until the moment of the copying would remain the same.

By many definitions, both copies could be considered the "same person" as the single original consciousness before it was copied. At the same time, they can be considered distinct individuals once they begin to diverge, so the issue of which copy "inherits" what could be complicated. This problem is similar to that found when considering the possibility of teleportation, where in some proposed methods it is possible to copy (rather than only move) a mind or person. This is the classic philosophical issue of personal identity. The problem is made even more serious by the possibility of creating a potentially infinite number of initially identical copies of the original person, which would of course all exist simultaneously as distinct beings.

Philosopher John Locke published "An Essay Concerning Human Understanding" in 1689, in which he proposed the following criterion for personal identity: if you remember thinking something in the past, then you are the same person as he or she who did the thinking. Later philosophers raised various logical snarls, most of them caused by applying Boolean logic, the prevalent logic system at the time. It has been proposed that modern fuzzy logic can solve those problems,[10] showing that Locke's basic idea is sound if one treats personal identity as a continuous rather than discrete value.

In that case, when a mind is copied -- whether during mind uploading, or afterwards, or by some other means -- the two copies are initially two instances of the very same person, but over time, they will gradually become different people to an increasing degree.

The issue of copying vs moving is sometimes cited as a reason to think that destructive methods of mind uploading such as serial sectioning of the brain would actually destroy the consciousness of the original and the upload would itself be a mere "copy" of that consciousness. Whether one believes that the original consciousness of the brain would transfer to the upload, that the original consciousness would be destroyed, or that this is simply a matter of definition and the question has no single "objectively true" answer, is ultimately a philosophical question that depends on one's views of philosophy of mind.

Because of these philosophical questions about the survival of consciousness, there are some who would feel more comfortable about a method of uploading where the transfer is gradual, replacing the original brain with a new substrate over an extended period of time, during which the subject appears to be fully conscious (this can be seen as analogous to the natural biological replacement of molecules in our brains with new ones taken in from eating and breathing, which may lead to almost all the matter in our brains being replaced in as little as a few months[11]). As mentioned above, this would likely take place as a result of gradual cyborging, either nanoscopically or macroscopically, wherein the brain (the original copy) would slowly be replaced bit by bit with artificial parts that function in a near-identical manner, and assuming this was possible at all, the person would not necessarily notice any difference as more and more of their brain became artificial. A gradual transfer also brings up questions of identity similar to the classical Ship of Theseus paradox, although the above-mentioned natural replacement of molecules in the brain through eating and breathing brings up these questions as well.

A computer capable of simulating a person may require microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), or else perhaps optical or nano computing for comparable speed and reduced size and sophisticated telecommunication between the brain and body (whether it exists in virtual reality, artificially as an android, or cybernetically as in sync with a biological body through a transceiver), but would not seem to require molecular nanotechnology.

If minds and environments can be simulated, the Simulation Hypothesis posits that the reality we see may in fact be a computer simulation, and that this is actually the most likely possibility.[12]

Uploading is a common theme in science fiction. Some of the earlier instances of this theme were in the Roger Zelazny 1968 novel Lord of Light and in Frederik Pohl's 1955 short story "Tunnel Under the World." A near miss was Neil R. Jones' 1931 short story "The Jameson Satellite", wherein a person's organic brain was installed in a machine, and Olaf Stapledon's "Last and First Men" (1930) had organic human-like brains grown into an immobile machine.

Another of the "firsts" is the novel Detta r verkligheten (This is reality), 1968, by the renowned philosopher and logician Bertil Mrtensson, in which he describes people living in an uploaded state as a means to control overpopulation. The uploaded people believe that they are "alive", but in reality they are playing elaborate and advanced fantasy games. In a twist at the end, the author changes everything into one of the best "multiverse" ideas of science fiction. Together with the 1969 book Ubik by Philip K. Dick it takes the subject to its furthest point of all the early novels in the field.

Frederik Pohl's Gateway series (also known as the Heechee Saga) deals with a human being, Robinette Broadhead, who "dies" and, due to the efforts of his wife, a computer scientist, as well as the computer program Sigfrid von Shrink, is uploaded into the "64 Gigabit space" (now archaic, but Fred Pohl wrote Gateway in 1976). The Heechee Saga deals with the physical, social, sexual, recreational, and scientific nature of cyberspace before William Gibson's award-winning Neuromancer, and the interactions between cyberspace and "meatspace" commonly depicted in cyberpunk fiction. In Neuromancer, a hacking tool used by the main character is an artificial infomorph of a notorious cyber-criminal, Dixie Flatline. The infomorph only assists in exchange for the promise that he be deleted after the mission is complete.

In the 1982 novel Software, part of the Ware Tetralogy by Rudy Rucker, one of the main characters, Cobb Anderson, has his mind uploaded and his body replaced with an extremely human-like android body. The robots who persuade Anderson into doing this sell the process to him as a way to become immortal.

In the 1997 novel "Shade's Children" by Garth Nix, one of the main characters Shade (a.k.a. Robert Ingman) is an uploaded consciousness that guides the other characters through the post-apocolyptic world in which they live.

The fiction of Greg Egan has explored many of the philosophical, ethical, legal, and identity aspects of mind uploading, as well as the financial and computing aspects (i.e., hardware, software, processing power) of maintaining "copies". In Egan's Permutation City and Diaspora, "copies" are made by computer simulation of scanned brain physiology. Also, in Egan's "Jewelhead" stories, the mind is transferred from the organic brain to a small, immortal backup computer at the base of the skull, with the organic brain then being surgically removed.

The Takeshi Kovacs novels by Richard Morgan was set in a universe where mind transfers were a part of standard life. With the use of cortical stacks, which record a person's memories and personality into a device implanted in the spinal vertebrae, it was possible to copy the individual's mind to a storage system at the time of death. The stack could be uploaded to a virtual reality environment for interrogation, entertainment, or to pass the time for long distance travel. The stack could also be implanted into a new body or "sleeve" which may or may not have biomechanical, genetic, or chemical "upgrades" since the sleeve could be grown or manufactured. Interstellar travel is most often accomplished by digitized human freight ("dhf") over faster-than-light needlecast transmission.

In the "Requiem for Homo Sapiens" series of novels by David Zindell (Neverness, The Broken God, The Wild, and War in Heaven), the verb "cark" is used for uploading one's mind (and also for changing one's DNA). Carking is done for soul-preservation purposes by the members of the Architects church, and also for more sinister (or simply unknowable) purposes by the various "gods" that populate the galaxy such gods being human minds that have now grown into planet- or nebula-sized synthetic brains. The climax of the series centers around the struggle to prevent one character from creating a Universal Computer (under his control) that will incorporate all human minds (and indeed, the entire structure of the universe).

In the popular computer game Total Annihilation, the 4,000-year war that eventually culminated with the destruction of the Milky Way galaxy was started over the issue of mind transfer, with one group (the Arm) resisting another group (the Core) who were attempting to enforce a 100% conversion rate of humanity into machines, because machines are durable and modular, thereby making it a "public health measure."

In the popular science fiction show Stargate SG-1 the alien race who call themselves the Asgard rely solely on cloning and mind transferring to continue their existence. This was not a choice they made, but a result of the decay of the Asgard genome due to excessive cloning, which also caused the Asgard to lose their ability to reproduce. In the episode "Tin Man", SG-1 encounter Harlan, the last of a race that transferred their minds to robots in order to survive. SG-1 then discover that their minds have also been transferred to robot bodies. Eventually they learn that their minds were copied rather than uploaded and that the "original" SG-1 are still alive.

The Thirteenth Floor is a film made in 1999 directed by Josef Rusnak. In the film, a scientific team discovers a technology to create a fully functioning virtual world which they could experience by taking control of the bodies of simulated characters in the world, all of whom were self-aware. One plot twist was that if the virtual body a person had taken control of was killed in the simulation while they were controlling it, then the mind of the simulated character the body originally belonged to would take over the body of that person in the "real world".

The Matrix is a film released the same year as The Thirteenth Floor that has the same kind of solipsistic philosophy. In The Matrix, the protagonist Neo finds out that the world he has been living in is nothing but a simulated dreamworld. However, this should be considered as virtual reality rather than mind uploading, since Neo's physical brain still is required to reside his mind. The mind (the information content of the brain) is not copied into an emulated brain in a computer. Neo's physical brain is connected into the Matrix via a brain-machine interface. Only the rest of the physical body is simulated. Neo is disconnected from this dreamworld by human rebels fighting against AI-driven machines in what seems to be a neverending war. During the course of the movie, Neo and his friends are connected back into the Matrix dreamworld in order to fight the machine race.

In the series Battlestar Galactica the antagonists of the story are the Cylons, sentient computers created by man which developed to become nearly identical to human beings. When they die they rely on mind transferring to keep on living so that "death becomes a learning experience".

The 1995 movie Strange Days explores the idea of a technology capable of recording a conscious event. However, in this case, the mind itself is not uploaded into the device. The recorded event, which time frame is limited to that of the recording session, is frozen in time on a data disc much like today's audio and video. Wearing the "helmet" in playback mode, another person can experience the external stimuli interpretation of the brain, the memories, the feelings, the thoughts and the actions that the original person recorded from his/her life. During playback, the observer temporarily quits his own memories and state of consciousness (the real self). In other words, one can "live" a moment in the life of another person, and one can "live" the same moment of his/her life more than once. In the movie, a direct link to a remote helmet can also be established, allowing another person to experience a live event.

Followers of the Ralian religion advocate mind uploading in the process of human cloning to achieve eternal life. Living inside of a computer is also seen by followers as an eminent possibility.[13]

However, mind uploading is also advocated by a number of secular researchers in neuroscience and artificial intelligence, such as Marvin Minsky. In 1993, Joe Strout created a small web site called the Mind Uploading Home Page, and began advocating the idea in Cryonics circles and elsewhere on the net. That site has not been actively updated in recent years, but it has spawned other sites including MindUploading.org, run by Randal A. Koene, Ph.D., who also moderates a mailing list on the topic. These advocates see mind uploading as a medical procedure which could eventually save countless lives.

Many Transhumanists look forward to the development and deployment of mind uploading technology, with many predicting that it will become possible within the 21st century due to technological trends such as Moore's Law. Many view it as the end phase of the Transhumanist project, which might be said to begin with the genetic engineering of biological humans, continue with the cybernetic enhancement of genetically engineered humans, and finally obtain with the replacement of all remaining biological aspects.

The book Beyond Humanity: CyberEvolution and Future Minds by Gregory S. Paul & Earl D. Cox, is about the eventual (and, to the authors, almost inevitable) evolution of computers into sentient beings, but also deals with human mind transfer.

Raymond Kurzweil, a prominent advocate of transhumanism and the likelihood of a technological singularity, has suggested that the easiest path to human-level artificial intelligence may lie in "reverse-engineering the human brain", which he usually uses to refer to the creation of a new intelligence based on the general "principles of operation" of the brain, but he also sometimes uses the term to refer to the notion of uploading individual human minds based on highly detailed scans and simulations. This idea is discussed on pp. 198-203 of his book The Singularity is Near, for example.

Hans Moravec describes and advocates mind uploading in both his 1988 book Mind Children: The Future of Robot and Human Intelligence and also his 2000 book Robot: Mere Machine to Transcendent Mind. Moravec is referred to by Marvin Minsky in Minsky's essay Will Robots Inherit the Earth?.[14]

Mind uploading is a science fictional trope and popular desired actualization among transhumanists. It's also one of the hypothesised solutions to bringing people back from cryonics. It posits that your soul 'mind pattern' can be implemented in a computer.

The first, and main, problem is that the "mind" isn't a physical thing. "Minds" are emergent properties of living brains. So what you would need to do is preserve is all the electrical, chemical and physical information contained in a living connected-up brain at one particular instant, and then recreate that exact instantaneous set of electrical and chemical data in a new physical substrate and get it set up so that it immediately created the same set of emergent properties. This is not going to happen soon and, perhaps, ever.

Nevertheless proponents typically will say you just need to preserve a dead person's brain, slice it very thinly, scan each piece with microscopes, and reconstruct and run the connections on a computer. With continued exponential improvements in computing, this will soon be possible!

Except it isn't that simple. The brain is not a 'computer' as such, and the neurons are much more complicated than the simplified 'neurons' of machine learning. It isn't feasible to preserve a dying brain before cell death destroys much of the information you are trying to get. Even if it were, preservation techniques only allow one to see the structure of the connections between neurons, but further electrical and chemical detail is lost.

The brain, like any organ, works via biochemistry. It doesn't have a standardized computer architecture whereby you can download data. Vital information of the distribution of various molecules and how they are distributed and interact needs to be recorded, but this is heavily damaged by any preservation solution. There does not appear to be a way, even in theory, to preserve the biochemistry in a readable state. Not only that, but the brain is a wet, organic analogue processor; it will certainly not be possible to copy it to dry, inorganic digital silicon without massive changes to the enormous amounts of data you would need to obtain.

As biologist PZ Myers - who freezes zebrafish brains a whole lot, and would be delighted to have anything recoverable at the end - explained:

We dont have a method to lock down the state of a 1.5kg brain. What youre going to be recording is the dying brain, with cells spewing and collapsing and triggering apoptotic activity everywhere. And thats another thing: what the heck is going to be recorded? You need to measure the epigenetic state of every nucleus, the distribution of highly specific, low copy number molecules in every dendritic spine, the state of molecules in flux along transport pathways, and the precise concentration of all ions in every single compartment. Does anyone have a fixation method that preserves the chemical state of the tissue? All the ones I know of involve chemically modifying the cells and proteins and fluid environment. Does anyone have a scanning technique that records a complete chemical breakdown of every complex component present?

The concept has been criticized further by Myers[2][3][4] and by neuroscientist Kenneth D. Miller.[5]

Additionally, computer emulations of brain activity, even if it was just the connections between neurons, are not going to be affordable. This means that the price of computing cannot keep falling like it has, so the enormous supercomputers that would be required to run any uploaded mind would be unaffordable, even in the future.

It seems likely that the best and most efficient medium for running a human mind is a human brain, so keep yours in good working order.

The less crazy transhumanist think that brain uploading would involve cutting up the brain. [6] The more crazy guys think that nanotech would allow a slow and steady replacement of brain's tissue to the computing substrate. [7]

Several metaphysical questions are brought up by the prospect of mind uploading. Like many such questions, these may not be objectively answerable, and philosophers would no doubt continue to debate them even if uploading somehow became a reality.

The first major philosophical question is more or less falsifiable: whether consciousness is artificially replicable in its entirety. In other words, assuming that consciousness is not magic, and that the brain is the seat of consciousness, does it depend on any special functions or quantum mechanical effects that cannot ever be replicated on another substrate? This question, of course, remains unanswered although, considering the current state of cognitive science, it is not unreasonable to think that consciousness will be found to be replicable in the future.

Assuming that consciousness is proven to be artificially replicable, the second question is whether the "strong AI hypothesis" is justified or not: if a machine accurately replicates consciousness, such that it passes a Turing Test or is otherwise indistinguishable from a natural human being, is the machine really conscious, or is it a soulless mechanism that merely imitates consciousness?

Third, assuming that a machine can actually be conscious (which is no great stretch of the imagination, considering that the human brain is essentially a biological machine), is a copy of your consciousness really you? Is it even possible to copy consciousness? Is mind uploading really a ticket to immortality, in that "you" or your identity can be "uploaded"?

Advocates of mind uploading take the functionalist/reductionist approach of defining human existence as the identity, which is based on memories and personalities rather than physical substrates or subjectivity.[8] They believe that the identity is essential; the copy of the mind holds just as much claim to being that person as the original, even if both were to exist simultaneously. When the physical body of a copied person dies, nothing that defines the person as an individual has been lost. In this context, all that matters is that the memories and personality of the individual are preserved. As the recently murdered protagonist states in Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, "I feel like me and no one else is making that claim. Who cares if I've been restored from a backup?"

Skeptics of mind uploading[9] question if it's possible to transfer a consciousness from one substrate to another, and hold that this is critical to the life-extension application of mind uploading. The transfer of identity is similar to the process of transferring data from one computer hard drive to another. The new person would be a copy of the original; a new consciousness with the same identity. With this approach, mind uploading would simply create a "mind-clone"[10] an artificial person with an identity gleaned from another. The philosophical problem with uploading "yourself" to a computer is very similar to the "swamp man" and teleportation thought experiments. [11] Suppose Alec Davidson goes hiking in the swamp and is struck and killed by a lightning bolt. At the same time, nearby in the swamp another lightning bolt spontaneously rearranges a bunch of molecules such that, entirely by coincidence, they take on exactly the same form that Dr. Holland's Davidson's body had at the moment of his untimely death. This being, whom Davidson terms Swamp Thing "Swampman," has, of course, a brain which is structurally identical to that which Davidson had, and will thus, presumably, behave exactly as Davidson would have. He will walk out of the swamp, return to Davidson's office at Berkeley, and write the same essays he would have written; he will interact like an amicable person with all of Davidson's friends and family, and so forth. This is one reason that has led critics to say it's not at all clear that the concept mind uploading is even meaningful. [12] For the skeptic, the thought of permanently losing subjective consciousness (death), while another consciousness that shares their identity lives on yields no comfort. Daniel Dennett, in Consciousness Explained, has called into question the validity of these sorts of thought experiments altogether, maintaining that when a thought experiment is too far removed from the actual state of affairs, our intuitions cease to be meaningful.

Consciousness is currently (poorly) understood to be an epiphenomenon of brain activity specifically of the cerebral cortex[13]. Identity and consciousness are distinct from one another though presumably the former could not exist without the latter. Unlike an identity, which is a composition of information stored within a brain it is reasonable to assume that a particular subjective consciousness is an intrinsic property of a particular physical brain. Thus, even a perfect physical copy of that brain would not share the subjective consciousness of that brain. This holds true of all 'brains' (consciousness-producing machines), biological or otherwise. When/if non-biological brains are ever developed/discovered it would be reasonable to assume that each would have its own intrinsic, non-transferable subjective consciousness, independent of its identity. It is likely that mind uploading would preserve an identity, if not the subjective consciousness that begot it. If identity rather than subjective consciousness is taken to be the essential, mind uploading succeeds in the opinion of mind-uploading-immortalist advocates.

Mind uploading has also ethical issues, especially in what refers to duplicates of a given self, as well as others relatives to the harmful things that could be done on what basically would now be an equivalent of a computer file or program, and that (at least for now and at least not so easily too) cannot happen in a human mind -namely, erasing it or destroying the computer that is running the simulation/storing the uploaded mind killing for good the person, modifying its contents deleting and/or adding others, merging two or more previous selves into other and vice-versa, being copied or moved ad infinitum, messing with inputs (sort of sending someone to a "digital heaven" or a "digital hell" -or worse-), messing with the way time is felt by the uploaded speeding or slowing the simulation (or causing it to enter into an infinite loop), infecting a mind with the equivalent of a computer virus (or rather the equivalent of a neurological disease)... the list goes on-.

Believing that there is some mystical "essence" to consciousness that isn't preserved by copying is ultimately a form of dualism, however. Humans lose consciousness at least daily, yet still remain the same person in the morning. In the extreme, humans completely cease all activity, brain or otherwise, during deep hypothermic circulatory arrest, yet still remain the same person on resuscitation,[14] demonstrating that continuity of consciousness is not necessary for identity or personhood. Rather, the properties that make us identifiable as individuals are stored in the physical structure of the brain.

Ultimately, this is a subjective problem, not an objective one: If a copy is made of a book, is it still the same book? It depends if you subjectively consider "the book" to be the physical artifact or the information contained within. Is it the same book that was once held by Isaac Newton? No. Is it the same book that was once read by Isaac Newton? Yes.

SpaceX Wins FCC Approval To Test Starlink Ground Stations In 6 States – Wccftech

Hawthorne, California-based astronautic launch services provider and equipment manufacturer Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) plans to diversify its operations through launching an internet network consisting of non-geostationary satellites and ground base stations. Dubbed as Starlink, this network eventually intends to function on its own through using lasers for relaying data between the satellites to ensure global coverage.

SpaceX's plans for Starlink have however come under the scrutiny of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which is yet to decide on whether to maintain the company's preferential access to certain frequency bands. Additionally, the Commission is also yet to change its mind about Starlink being 'experimental' in nature; a shift that will qualify the network to receive American government funds for providing internet access to users in rural areas.

SpaceX Invests $70 Million In 12GHz Starlink Terminal Production

To this end, Starlink just scored a big win from the FCC as the regulatory body has granted SpaceX Services Inc. temporary authority to operate Starlink ground stations located in six American states. The approval comes following SpaceX's decision to file the Special Temporary Authority (STA) request with the FCC in mid-June.

For the initial stage of Starlink's launch, SpaceX will have to use ground-based Earth stations to operate the network and provide users with the ability to connect with internet servers. The company requested the FCC to allow it to temporarily operate six Earth stations in different American states to test these ground stations and the satellites, in an attempt to ensure that the network performs according to expectations once it is launched commercially later this year.

The six ground stations for which SpaceX has received FCC approval are located in Hitterdal, MN; Tionesta, CA; Robertsdale, AL; and Baxley, GA, Butte, MT; and Colburn, ID. For uploading data from the stations to the Starlink satellites, the company intends to use the 28.6-29.1 GHz and 29.5-30.0 GHz spectrums and for downlink, it intends to use the 17.8-18.6 GHz and 18.8-19.3 GHz.

FCC's approval also requires SpaceX to be responsible for any interference that might occur with existing users of the aforementioned spectrum bands. Specifically, they are tilted against SpaceX due to the facts. that while the company is responsible for not willfully causing interference with other, current users of the band and that it is not liable to receive any protection from said interference, should this interference occur then SpaceX is required to stop broadcasting from the ground station that is responsible for the occurrence and proceed to inform the FCC of the event.

Each of SpaceX's gateway Earth stations featureseight antennas which are manufactured by in-house by SpaceX. The antennas come with minor and major diameters of 1.5 meters each, are located 3.2 meters above ground level, have an input power of 50 Watts and Effective Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) of 66.5 decibel-Watt. EIRP is an indicator of the antenna's maximum power output in a single direction.

SpaceX's STA period commences today and it will last for 60 days before ending in September. In the narrative for the authorization request, the company directly tied the grant to its ability to refine Starlink for creating a network that is capable of serving populations in areas that are typically either deprived of internet connectivity or where users find it difficult to obtain coverage. SpaceX is also required to coordinate with any federal users of the frequency bands in which it has been authorized to operate, and the approval comes as the company prepares to expand the number of Starlink satellites orbiting the Earth by conducting more launches.

The Sims 4 PC tips and tricks to improve your builds without mods – VG247

The Sims 4 has a really good set of tools to help you build tiny homes, cafs, museums, trailers, nightclubs, mansions, and loads of other types of buildings.

But, not many people are aware of some small little hacks you can do using in-game cheats and tools. Were going to talk you through some of these tricks so you can build the nightclub-mansion-museum of your dreams. On PC only sorry, console players.

So here are our top six ways to improve your Sims 4 builds without Sims 4 mods. If you have any additional tips and tricks, please post them in the comments and let everyone know your favourite ways to build.

Lets kick things off with some console commands you should probably almost definitely use every time you build. To open the console, hit control, shift, and C. Itll bring up a box you can type in in the top left corner. Youll want to type in testingcheats true, which will allow a lot of cheats to activate, and also help you out with some cheats in live mode. The most important one, in my opinion, is bb.moveobjects. If you press alt with this enabled, this allows you to move objects off grid, move them through walls, move them super close to each other, and just make your builds look more realistic rather than Sim-y.

Another pair of console commands you should bear in mind are the two that unlock all debug items in the game this means you can access items that are otherwise not in the catalogue. One includes all of the things that your sims can essentially pull out of their arses I mean, pockets? like toothbrushes, or food items. Note that when uploading this to the gallery to share with other simmers, some of these will not transfer. To access this use bb.showhiddenobjects and then search debug and click any of the debugs you see as a result.

The next will allow you to use all of the props you see in the different worlds in your actual builds. From fencing to water towers, or even train tracks, you can really level up your build with some of these items. Youll want to use bb.showliveeditobjects for this, but make sure youve inputted the first two cheats for this one to work. The debug menu is mostly unsearchable, and un-cloneable. So grab what you need when you see it.

And finally, have you ever been scrolling through the catalogue only to see an item you really want, but its a new save, or you dont play in live mode anymore, and its an item locked behind a specific career? Im looking at you Deep Thoughts Bookcase. Luckily for you, theres a cheat for that. What isnt there a cheat for? Youll want to use bb.ignoregameplayunlocksentitlement. Its a long one, I misspell it so often too, but its so, so worth it for the Deep Thoughts Bookcase.

This leads us on nicely to some keyboard shortcuts. A lot of you will probably know this, but you can make items bigger or smaller using the square bracket keys on your keyboard. It helps a lot with builds in general, and Ill be telling you how to use this effectively a little bit later on. Do note that whilst it works on most objects, it doesnt always work on things that have lights on them like certain TVs and doesnt work at all on mirrors or windows. Some things just need to stay the size they were made apparently. But at least you can make a massive toilet.

Another one youll most likely already know about is the keys 9 and 0 move objects up and down well, most of them. Mirrors and pictures cant really go down, but they can go up. Pictures can be placed anywhere on a wall though, and go up from there, just not down. And if theres an item like a chair that youre trying to move up and down, itll click into place if it goes near a table or desk, so do be aware of that. Also, 9 can be a saved camera angle, if youve saved a camera angle in the past maybe even by accident everytime you click 9 itll shift round to where you do not want it to be, so hold down control as you press 9 to stop this from happening.

These keyboard shortcuts will help you massively with the rest of the tricks that youll learn about in this video, so its good to familiarise yourself with them.

A small aside here, but The Sims 4 is very well optimised for laptop users. So much so that The Sims 4 default camera is all about laptop users. However, The Sims 3 camera is best for placing specifically, rotating objects. And its also just better in general. It may take some getting used to if youve been playing with the default camera, but Id recommend turning on The Sims 3 camera in your game settings.

Clutter can really add to a build. Dont come for me if you like a tidy build thats fine too. But I like my Sims homes to look lived in, and realistic. I mean, I know some people are actually very tidy, but thats not me. Clutter up my life, thanks.

There are a couple of ways to clutter spaces. Both ways need you to use moveobjects. The first way is to fill up all clutter slots on your item with random clutter items for example, a desk might have a few snapping slots that will only let you place clutter in specific places. Place something in each of them, so theres nowhere else you clutter can click to. Once thats done, you can then get a second desk, place the actual clutter items you want on it, and then grab them, hold alt, and move them over to the desk thats in the right place. Youll notice the clutter item will stay at the same height, but can now be freely moved. So put it where you want on your original desk, and then once youve satisfied your cluttered needs, delete the placeholders.

The other way to do it is to place your desk, and then put all of the clutter items you want on it. Doesnt matter where they go. Now, move your desk out of the way, but remember where it was, and then bring the objects from that desk into the space that was left by it. Remember to hold alt while doing this so the objects stay at the same height. This one takes a little more guesswork as to where things will look good, or if theyre even in the same place. But its the trick I use. Of course, you can keep moving your desk back to where itll end up to make sure its all going in the right place. Once youre done, put your desk back where you want it, and voila! This doesnt work for electronics on the desk, keep reading to find out how to do that.

Do bear in mind that with both of these options, if you end up changing your mind as to where you want your desk, table, side table, counter, etcetera, then the clutter will not move with the item.

This is a trick that blew my mind. Maybe youve always known how to do this in The Sims 4, but for me? Amazing. Brilliant. Unique. Never been done before. Its all about making an object like a table or a counter super tiny, to be able to utilise space a little better.

The first example is in kitchens, or bathrooms, or anywhere you may want to use a counter. You know in some houses theres counters then a gap in the middle and maybe a laundry basket or storage? Not possible in the Sims. UNLESS you use this trick. Make sure you have moveobjects enabled for this though. Grab a dishwasher, and shrink it down super small using the left square bracket key. Once its tiny, place it in the counter, chopping a square out of it, and it then becomes a blank space for you to place something else there. Like a laundry basket, or a box of towels, or cleaning products. Do try to use something here that youre not going to want your sims to use, as they wont really be able to comprehend whats going on here and will probably get confused. It adds such a nice touch to an otherwise boring object.

The second example is desks. Say you want your laptop or computer to be on the slant on a desk rather than bang in the middle. What you need to do here is grab a small, one by one desk or table, and size it all the way down. Once sized down grab the piece of electronic equipment you want to place on a desk and put it on top of the mini desk. The laptop will stay the same size, but now wherever you move the mini-desk the laptop will follow. Hide it away in a normal sized desk, and there you have it! A laptop on the side of the desk, rather than smack bang in the middle.

For me, roofing is the easiest way to make a building either look well thought out or not. So learning about being able to sort one side of the eaves without affecting the other was game changing. The same with putting in skylights. I still hate placing roofs, but theyre super effective when done right.

When you place a roof, youll see a bunch of different draggable options. From the little spheres that can make your roofs round to the rounded arrows that change the height and length, and then the little mini triangles that change your eaves length. The eaves are the things I want to tell you about. If you press and hold shift, you can change the length of a singular eave. Without shift, they will mirror one another. This is super helpful with a lot of different roofing styles, especially skylights.

Skylights are loads of different roof pieces joined together to make your roof look a little more interesting. Its easiest to use half gabled roofs, and use a whole load of different segments. If you place your roof how you want it first, and then drag some of it to the side to give yourself a gap where you want your skylight to go, and then copy and paste that same roof, place it on the other side of the gap, then copy and paste it again, and make a tiny piece for the bottom of where you want the skylight to be. Roofs look weird if the glass goes over the edge of the wall. Then copy and paste your first big bit, and place it where you want the skylight to be, and re-colour it to be glass. Youll probably have some eaves clipping in to where your skylight is, so press shift and move the sides that are clipping.

Using all of these things can help you make some incredible builds, like using debug and 9 and 0 to make magnificent sweeping staircases, or moveobjects and mini counters to create built-in microwave units in your kitchens. There are moments in a persons life which stand out, in radiant technicolor, against the gray and drab backdrop that sets the scene for most of lifes days such was the case as I set about in the usual way of covering the activities that unfolded on Selmas streets Sunday, activities which would follow me home and continue to haunt and inspire me over the next few days.

The media circus surrounding the Selma leg of the tribute to civil rights powerhouse and longtime Georgia Congressman John Lewis began Friday afternoon as broadcast news outlets began constructing their makeshift newsrooms and satellites and print journalists milled about asking questions of mask-clad wanderers on the street, but this time it didnt take away from the matter at hand so often when the national media descends on Selma, they do so in an arrogant fashion that detracts from the stated reason for being here, but they rolled into the Queen City over the weekend somberly, obviously taken aback by the gravity of the situation theyd been called to document.

And why shouldnt they? The loss of John Lewis, a living reminder of the myriad struggles that had to take place and are indeed still taking place in order to provide all Americans with the same rights, liberties and opportunities, is a blow to the nations collective midsection, particularly at a time when emotions are running high over the same conflicts that have raged for generations.

All of this was on my mind, and so much more, as I climbed the stairs in the Times-Journal building Sunday morning to take my perch atop the fire escape which overlooks the bridge over an hour early, the waiting game played havoc on my plans and those of the other press writers below.

I climbed onto the roof of the building, following a dream the night before in which I fell from my perch trying to lean into a shot of Lewiss final freedom voyage over the Alabama River, and took in the whole city you could hear voices belting out This Little Light of Mine and the flutter of birds wings as they scattered from the rooftop to a nearby powerline and on into the heavens; you could see the people, no larger than a fingernail, idling up and down the streets, talking, mourning and remembering.

To be sure, the monotony of responsibility found its way to me I had to assist the drone operators in getting the shot we wanted for todays front page; I talked regularly with Times-Journal News Editor James Jones, who was stationed outside of Brown Chapel during the mornings events, to keep tabs on when the procession would bend the curve onto Broad Street; I worked with visiting journalists, allowing them editing space inside the newsroom, and in general worked, as work is nothing if not work but, as a journalist, one finds that work, emotion and history often unfold simultaneously, at least if one pays attention to the event and not just the covering of the event.

I drank five cups of coffee before the horse-drawn carriage and the flag-draped casket began its slow climb toward the Edmund Pettus Bridge weeping could be heard, shouts of Thank you, John and Good trouble could be heard; outstretched hands extended beyond the barriers lining each side of the street, as if to touch the hem of his garment one time more before he was gone forever and I shot dozens of photos, any one of which would be enough to show what happened.

Work resumed thereafter uploading photos, shutting down the office and I wound my way home where my wife and children had seen me on an NPR livestream of the event, my black-shirted frame leaning precariously over the edge of the metal staircase.

Daddy, my little girl asked. Was Mr. John Lewis in the box?

He was, sweetheart.

Did he get out and talk?

No, baby. Mr. John Lewis cant talk anymore.

Saying that to my daughter, who was born on the 45th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who since learning about King in school has developed a keen interest in all facets of the Civil Rights Movement, particularly King and Rosa Parks, was difficult, because it was the first time my throat had let loose what my mind already knew John Lewis cant talk anymore; John Lewis cant champion the fight for jobs and freedom anymore; John Lewis cant loudly call us to never give up or give in.

But somehow, he speaks to us now just as clearly as ever John Lewis cant call for equal rights anymore, but we can; John Lewis cant fight and march anymore, but we can.

Not only can we, but we must.

Unlike so many of my journalistic counterparts, I never had the opportunity to look in John Lewiss eyes or hear him speak directly to me and yet I hear his voice as if, in fact, it is speaking directly to me.

I appeal to all of you to get into this great revolution that is sweeping this nation. Get in and stay in the streets of every city, every village and hamlet of this nation until true freedom comes, until the revolution of 1776 is complete.

Policymakers have rushed to adopt surveillance measures to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, but not without controversy. On March 16, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu authorized the Israeli Security Agency (Shin Bet) to track the mobile phone location data of its citizens and notify those who may have come in close proximity to COVID-19 carriers to self-isolate. While Shin Bets system has successfully warned almost 4,000 individuals who have later tested positive, many privacy advocates fear that such enhanced surveillance may provide opportunities for abuse. The Supreme Court of Israel even ruled against this decision on April 26, condemning the prime minister for violating the non-delegation doctrine by authorizing the policy without explicit statutory authority.

Israel is not alone in turning to digital surveillance; Singapore has implemented wearable contact-tracing tokens and with the help of machine learning tools, France is monitoring whether individuals are wearing masks through video surveillance cameras. Even some of the most privacy-protective European countries, Italy and Germany, have launched contact-tracing applications to track the spread of coronavirus. Some countries are utilizing apps built by private sector technology giants like Apple and Google, using open-source code in order to prioritize transparency.

As more countries rely on digital tools to contain the spread of COVID-19, how will enhanced surveillance challenge privacy norms in the future? According to the World Health Organization, public health surveillance is critical to containing the pandemic. However, can enhanced surveillance during a public health crisis set precedents for digital surveillance in the future?

Government surveillance has different meanings in different parts of the world. Most Singaporeans have demanded more surveillance in neighborhoods and public spaces, for crime prevention, resulting in more than 70,000 police cameras deployed in our tiny island-state. But they have also criticized a proposal to issue contact tracing wearables to every resident. It looks like surveillance is good when everyone else is being watched, but not when Im the one being watched.

Governments who build better trust (e.g. by making contact tracing apps open source), whose populations are more communitarian than individualistic (e.g. many Asian countries), may find them more tolerant of surveillance during a crisis like this pandemic. When the crisis is over, the population may be less tolerantbut with the infrastructure in place, it may be too late to turn back.

COVID-19 is arguably making individuals even more aware of the risk of government surveillance and more guarded of their privacy than before.The steady slide into mass collection of citizens private details was accelerating across much of Africa since especially the 2011 Arab Spring, with governments in Tanzania and Ethiopia, among others, imposing social media taxes, cybersecurity, and terrorism laws aimed at monitoring online communications. These measures were already being met with resistance. But contact tracing and other forms of COVID-19-related surveillance involve a different, deeper, level of intimacyindividual social and health historiesthat extend beyond the kind of information most are willing to forego. More and more Africans are taking the position that their social activities and health records are not essential to stemming the pandemic, but rather risk giving their respective governments more control than they in many cases already have. This heightened degree of caution will likely persist, if not accelerate, in the months and years following the pandemic.

Laura Galante, senior fellow, Eurasia Center; founder, Galante Strategies LLC:

Depends on the country: I think populations that were growing comfortable with outright surveillanceparticularly Chinawill look back at COVID as a proof point for mass surveillances positive effect in fighting the pandemic.

Harel Menashri, head of cyber, Holon Institute of Technology:

The world is divided into countries that are totalitarian and dictatorial in nature and culture, such as China, as opposed to countries with a democratic history and culture. In democratic countries, the public will still prefer to block government surveillance capabilities as much as possible.

Kenneth Propp, senior fellow, Future Europe Initiative; director for global trade policy, BSA:

The answer depends very much on your nationality. Asian populations seem broadly tolerant of pandemic-related surveillance; Americans seem quite distrustful; Europeans are somewhere in the middle. Those general attitudes will carry on.

Ang: Lateral surveillanceindividuals policing one another for not complying with safe distancing or wearing masksis one privacy risk that is grossly overlooked. This risk comes from vigilantes with mobile phone cameras hunting and shaming covidiots (a derogatory term for people who appear to be ignoring COVID-19), to the extent of uploading videos and doxing them. The vigilantes have no training or interest in privacy, no due process, and no accountability.

Gadzala: The by-now-apparent elephant in the room when it comes to surveillance risks and privacy in Africa is China, and I worry that we continue to underestimate the extent of Beijings data collection and influence operations in the regionand the enormous opportunity that COVID-19 has created in this regard. Technology linked to Chinese companiesparticularly Huawei, Hikvision, Dahua, and ZTEsupply artificial intelligence solutions ranging from facial recognition systems to smart policing in nearly twenty African countries. Huawei dominates the African telecommunications market (it is building 70 percent of Africas 4G infrastructure and is proceeding with plans to deploy 5G networks on the continent). With African governments now turning to (Chinese-based) mobile tracing solutions to stem the spread of the virus, Beijing is likely to gain significant data and intelligence. This carries a variety of strategic implications for the United States and significant risks for Africa: if the Chinese government and Chinese companies have valuable information on African populations, it could be used in bilateral commercial negotiations, potentially crowding out local industries, or as leverage in political disputes. African leaders are likely aware of at least some of these vulnerabilities, though are largely unwilling or unable to address the challenge.

Galante: By using rolling proximity identifiers, as many of the contact tracing efforts do, an app would be creating an incredibly valuable and exploitable set of data on both peoples locations and habits and who has been infected. There are myriad scenarios that Id rather not outline, on how an adversary could expose that data and wreak havoc on populations for years to come.

Menashri: The risk to privacy stems from the fact that in the absence of voluntary options, and due to a lack of good enough civilian applications to monitor contacts between blue suspects and others, we are inevitably forced to operate systems designed to monitor suspicious activity in front of civilians.

Propp: I think the privacy risks from the pandemic have been well-flagged in the debate so far. I dont see any that have been grossly overlooked.

Ang: Singapores government developed the TraceTogether contact tracing app and made the code open source, which enables the public to verify its privacy statements and assess its level of surveillance. In many Southeast Asian countries, governments are more accountable for their actions than large private sector corporations like Google, Facebook, or Apple. Governments can be voted out of office, whereas relatively small markets have little if any influence over large private sector technology corporations, which engage in surveillance for profit. One caveat: unlawful surveillance may not exist if a countrys laws and constitution allow mass surveillance.

Gadzala: In the West we are also struggling to decipher whether technology companies like Google or Apple, or government agencies, are best suited to this task. So far both answers are unsatisfactory, and the same is true in Africa. The trouble is that any kind of centralized database risks mission creep and can dramatically hamper trust in, and acceptance of, the responsible organizations. A viable solution could be a decentralized blockchain-based system, similar to existing smart contract frameworks. Such a solution could potentially allow for real-time monitoring of a populations immunity while offering greater protections of personal data. And this opens the door for the private sector beyond big tech in a rather significant way.In Africa, blockchain-based companies like Kenyas Nurse-in-Hand, Paxful, and AZA Group have started assuming various roles in the regional response to COVID-19. With greater support, they and their peers could be essential in the prevention of both the virus and unlawful surveillance.

Galante: Google, Apple, device manufacturers, and the telecomshave arguably the best datato work with for contact tracing. They shouldnt be left to devise privacy controls on their own. The federal government needstoprovide theframework for user consent, metadata collection parameters, and sunsetting and deletionpolicies.

Menashri: There is no doubt that the government has more existing tools to carry out monitoring and surveillance. The problem with the private sector stems from the fact that not all hardware and programming production is always done in the same country. You are sometimes forced to rely on a programmer who comes from another culture, and therefore, his ethical culture is also differentand this may be reflected in the software product he provides to you, without you being aware of it. If you make hardware in China, you are following other laws that allow the Chinese government to plant a backdoor on you. Thus, when it comes to privacy, the government has higher capabilities and if I want the private sector, I owe close regulatory oversight of the privacy authorities, to the manufacturers.

Propp: Most Americans seem comfortable with browser providers taking the lead in building contact tracing apps that protect privacy best against unlawful surveillance. European and Asian governments enjoy broader trust from their populations, so they are better trusted with developing privacy protections for such apps. Its also noteworthy that a number of European governments publicly have expressed great frustration about their desire to centralize tracing data being supervened by browser decisions.

Ang: In Singapore, support for surveillance for crime prevention has come from both conservative and liberal blocsthe former want law and order, the latter want protection of vulnerable persons. During this pandemic, Ive seen both blocs engage in lateral surveillance (i.e.vigilante shaming of people who do not comply with COVID-19 health regulations).

Galante: In the United States, you would be hard pressedto finda pro-surveillance faction. Thatsaid, most Americans are comfortable, or at least complacent, about theprofilethat theirspendingand online behavior creates forexploitationby advertisers. In the context of contact tracing, the benefit for the user is not the free use of an online social media or email account but rather the ability to protect themselvesand othersfrom infection.

Menashri: As I see it, the epidemic has caused extremism in public attitudes. It did not change their mind. There are certainly many who think that government officials should not carry out surveillance, for fear of invading privacy. By the way, I argue that it is not the role of internal intelligence organizations such as the Israeli ISA to deal with this issue.

Propp: I suspect that the pandemic has simply deepened existing ideological positions on surveillance rather than shifting them significantly.The views of those who fear intrusive government surveillance generally have been reinforced by the introduction of tracing apps, while those with greater tolerance of surveillance for the public good tend to accept tracing apps.

Ang: Democratic governments are sensitive to public opinion, so public awareness, scrutiny, and critique of public surveillance programs will help to curb mission creep.

Gadzala: There is a good deal that can be done in this regard, though none of it is easy, as it concerns matters of institutional accountability. One aspect on which I remain laser-focused is journalistic freedom, which has unfortunately declined across much of Africa in recent years and also now since the start of the pandemic. In Madagascar, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and among other countries, journalists are being threatened and media outlets shut down. This has implications both for how the health crisis is handled in these countries as well as the future state of their democracy. An encouraging trend that warrants greater support, however, is the emergence of new and decentralized media in the form of mobile apps, newsletters, and other platforms where the emphasis is on local reporting and local narratives. WanaData, for example, is a Nigerian-based, pan-African network of female journalists and data scientists focused on producing data-driven news in collaboration with community media and freelancers. The ability of such initiatives to report on instances of unlawful surveillance and hold violators to account is immensely important. Paradoxically, technology is here at once the culprit and the solution.

Galante: We need sunset and deletion policies whenever a surveillance measure is put in place locally, statewide or federally. The Electronic Frontier Foundation and the ACLU are doing good work to elevate privacy concerns amidst the many efforts to fight the pandemic.

Menashri: What is needed is a democratic culture, law enforcement, parliamentary authorities with supervisory powers and, most importantly, transparency of moves.

Propp: The limited acceptance of tracing apps in Western democracies suggests that their publics will remain wary of overt government surveillance in the future in other contexts.That wariness presumably will have an effect on government surveillance ambitions, at least on overt ones.

Changing your name comes with a lot of little headaches new email addresses, new identification, new paperwork. There's a little headache every time you catch something you missed in the transition.

I changed my surname about five years ago, and it took a recent email receipt to make me realize I hadn't changed my PayPal information. One of those little headaches that's slipped my mind until now.

Unfortunately, the most convenient way to change your name on PayPalis to make a new account. But if you don't want to do that, know that PayPal does offer ways to change your account name however, most of them require you to prove that you really need the name change.

Here's how to change your PayPalname. These steps can be performed using any internet browser on your Mac or PC.

All three name change options are accessible from the same menu.

1. Using an internet browser, log into your account on PayPal's website. Click the gear at the top-right of the screen to access your settings.

2. The settings page will show the name that's currently tied to your PayPal account. To change it, click "Update."

3. The update page gives you three options to change your name, each with its own requirements. You can ask PayPal to change your legal name, add a "nickname" to your account, or merely correct a typo.

Any paperwork you submit needs to be uploaded as a PDF, JPG, or PNG, and needs to be under 5 MB in size. If you're uncomfortable uploading paperwork to the internet, you can also send copies by mail.

To change your legal name, you'll need to submit a scan of a government issued photo ID, like a driver's license.

Along with this, you'll need to give legal proof that your name has been changed. This might mean a marriage certificate, or a name change court order.

Once you send this in, you'll need to wait for PayPal to approve the change. PayPal claims that it should only take a week, but some users have reported longer wait times.

The second option allows you to "update" your name. This is great if you want to use a nickname, for instance.

To do this, you'll need a scan of a government issued photo ID, and an official document that shows your current name. A utility bill would be perfect for this.

This will also take PayPal some time to process and approve.

To make a minor correction to your existing name, you don't need any paperwork. However, you can only change a few letters, and you can only make this change once.

How L.A.’s Mariachis Are Keeping the Music Alive and How You Can Help – KCET

See how mariachi music is giving people a sense of community and connectionin these times on "Southland Sessions" S1 E3: Mariachi - from Romance to Resistance.

Before April of this year, Los Angeles many mariachi groups were thriving. Spring is a good time for gigs and the preamble to the wedding and graduation-filled summer.

Before this, people were super happy and excited, said Joel Jacques, director ofMariachi Los Criollos de Guadalajara, but then COVID started.

Boyle Heights momentarily silent Mariachi Plaza may be the epicenter of Los Angeles' mariachi scene, but mariachi, of course, goes way back. In what is almost a study in creativity and adaptation, mariachi music was a result of the fortuitous mixing of indigenous and Spanish music starting in the 1700s, when Mexico was still under Spanish rule, primarily in Jalisco, Colima, Michoacn, Zacatecas, Guanajuato and Nayarit.

The invention and adoption of theguitarrn(meaning large guitar) the equivalent of the bass in mariachi in the 17thcentury was key in the development of mariachi musics first iteration.

Mariachi music remained in relative obscurity from the rest of the country, only finding an audience in rural and Indigenous populations. Inexplicably, aristocrats snubbed their noses at the art for almost 200 years until mariachi groups from Cocula and Tecatitln (another historic cradle of mariachi in Jalisco) made their way to Mexico City at the end of the 19thcentury and found widespread success. Mexican elites relegated it as inferior until then-president Porfirio Daz deemed a mariachi group worthy of playing at his birthday party in 1905. One can only imagine how those snotty folks felt when they realized what they had been missing.

Since then, mariachi music has only grown in popularity. UNESCO even named it a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2011.

As Joel Jacques, director of Mariachi Los Criollos de Guadalajara, put it, "Mexican music is culture, art and feeling. There's no better way to tell a woman you love her than by serenading her, and even more with mariachi, singing some beautiful songs for her like Pedro Infante's 'Amorcito Corazn. These are very happy songs, and beautiful too!

Much was written about theplight of mariachisat the start of the stay-at-home order. One would be forgiven for thinking that in the face of such terrible odds, the mariachis at plazas, banquet halls and restaurants simply sighed, packed up their instruments and let the county go silent. But they didnt. Like their musical ancestors, the Coca people of Cocula, Jalisco, they got creative.

If we dont adapt how we do things, they disappear, Jacques said.

Like many other entertainers, some mariachi groups have gone virtual, making customized videos for clients near and far.

Carlos Samaniego, Director ofMariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles(the World's First LGBTQ Mariachi), said that although most of the events he played at normally, like weddings and quinceaeras, got canceled, many of thePrideevents he was supposed to play at have gone virtual. For example,Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles recorded a Lucha Villa potpourri for a virtual queerceaera recently.

It really has hit the mariachi industry very, very hard . [but] thats one way we have stayed employed, he said.

For Jacques, who clearly revels inplaying for people, doing virtual performances has let him bring the love and joy of mariachi music to people who are far away from their loved ones. Ive had to doserenatasfor people who ended up being long distance because of COVID, Jacques said. Even a woman from Chicago around a month ago hired me to sing to her mother virtually.

It's also been an important business decision. He said mariachis who don't know how to work online end up being limited in the work they can do, and unfortunately, there are a lot of people in that position, he said. "This stuff changes every day, so if you don't try to update what you do, as we Mexicans say,te comen el mandado(they eat your groceries), he said. You need to stay updated, especially regarding platforms where you can promote yourself by uploading videos.

Even though videos have been an unexpected and welcome source of income, Samaniego said they simply dont come close to how the music sounds live. Erwin Vasquez, director ofMariachi Teocuitatlan, agreed and said many audiences are simply not interested in online performances. Its just the culture. People are used to coming up to ask for a song, getting close to us, singing, Vasquez said. Thats just how it is.

Audiences looking to listen to live mariachi during this time have plenty of creative options, from curbside concerts, caravans, and even drive-in mariachi concerts.

Of course, there are still things that continue to happen like birthdays and all these things that people have continued to celebrate have continued, but differently, Samaniego said. Now you have these [drive-by] caravans, and everything has to be done with social distancing, which is great.I believe theres some way to continue to celebrate and accomplish things like that, but its all done very differently.

Now, when there are birthdays, people are brought out to driveways and mariachis play from the sidewalk. I was lucky enough to be at a 100thbirthday near Palos Verdes, Jacques recalled. Even the fire department and police departments drove by. It was like a parade for the man. And the man was sitting in his little garden, and we were playing on the sidewalk. You see some really beautiful things."

Mariachi Los Criollos de Guadalajara play outside at a socially distanced gathering. "When we have to go to a house, we stand, and the clients sit far away. We wear the mask and only remove it to sing to you," Jacques said.

Samaniego is taking a break from playing in person for at least the next month to reduce the risk of infection and keep his clients safe. Before cases started to skyrocket again in July, he would only accept gigs that were held outside with enough room for appropriate social distancing, but he said many mariachi groups cant afford to be picky.

Vasquez said he also recently decided to stop playing in person for the remainder of the month. "As we show up, our bills are paid. If we don't show up, they're not," he said. "It's tough. We are putting ourselves in the line of danger showing up to unknown homes where there's people that we just don't know where they've been," Vasquez said. "It's been a challenge, but it's not something I can control because people are paying for the luxury of us showing up. It comes down to us risking it for the happiness of someone else. Now it's time to take ourselves into consideration before our clients to try to stay safe."

Many mariachis are still out working gigs normally, so Samaniego said keeping tabs on the mariachi community on social media is a great way for mariachis to stay informed.

Its really helped because there are musicians who have been affected and are saying please be cautious and wear your face mask while youre at the gig. Please keep your distance, he said. Just because the clients are having fun, and theyre drinking and not wearing face masks, dont fall into that and dont go inside the apartment or house, thats not really a good idea.

Samaniego said he was extra lucky; he was able to switch to online performances thanks to money he got from a grant that was only available to American citizens, which many mariachis are not. "I got that because fortunately I am a citizen and I can apply for these grants, but there are other people in the mariachi community who aren't legal residents or who may be undocumented who can't apply for these types of things, and so they're the ones that are suffering," he said. "A lot of them have lost their cars, or they're elderly and more susceptible to the coronavirus, so they're also not the most informed on how best to avoid it."

After about three months after the stay-at-homeorder was instated and after attempts to rehearse virtually, Samaniego set up a socially distanced rehearsal with plenty of precautionary measures, like temperature checks and hand sanitizer upon entry. "I wanted to make sure that everyone was safe, and I created this environment in order for us to be safe and rehearse. It was so satisfying musically and to our souls. Just to collaborate musically again was just so nice, and it was a treat to be able to do this."

Vasquez also pointed out that most, if not all, musicians live paycheck to paycheck or per gig. "There's times that musicians are waiting for a gig just so they can eat," he said.

To aid mariachis in these situations, Jacques said fellow mariachis established theOrganizacin de Mariachis Independientes de Los Angeles California(OMILCAL)in mid-June. That organization was created to help musicians who are older and unfortunately cant go out to work because they are at a higher risk if they get infected [but] dont you think its just for mariachis. For example, here in Mariachi Plaza in L.A., there have been trucks full to distribute milk and pantry items for musicians who cant go out to work, Jacques said. A lot of families have been affected.

Jacques continued, Thank God, because of tech I have work, but people who dont have that knowledge, one way or another we need to help them because like we say in Mexico,como te ves, me v, jven una vez(as you see yourself, I saw myself, young)y como me ves, te vers(as you see me, youll see yourself). We need to be conscious of the fact that were all going to get to that age and be proactive, smart and empathetic of others.

There are many ways to help the mariachi community. Samaniego suggested donating to your favorite mariachi or to arts organizations as well as buying theirmerchandise. On our website, we sell our CDs, our posters, our t-shirts, our baseball caps, even ourmoo. People love our rainbowmoo, and now I put them up for sale on our website," he said. "We have face masks too."

Besides donating to local charities and being cautious to slow the spread of the virus, Vasquez, Jacques and Samaniego agreed that a great way to help the mariachi community is by hiring a mariachi group for a virtual or in-person performance. I want them to know that we are active and available for their events, keeping safety top of mind, Jacques said.

Samaniego said mariachi groups are also especially flexible right now. If you want to celebrate something, hire a mariachi. If you cant afford much, ask for a small group, and people are really willing to accommodate.

Vasquez said he hopes when things clear up a bit more, people will think of musicians, mariachis and entertainers and hire them more often. "We're a small business, and we're in a time that small businesses need to be supported, but it's tough to ask for help because there's really no other way people can really help us than to hire us," he said. "We hope that when things get normal, we're busy with work and can continue to make people happy."

Jacques summed it up. "It's so hard to make a living, and more so now with COVID, but we've never let ourselves fall down, and we need to lend a hand now more than ever to face the changes and adapt together. Let's stay positive that this will be solved, thank god we have life and let's enjoy it with some good mariachi music.Que viva la msica Mexicana y que viva el mariachi!

So, if youre thinking of just calling youramorcito coraznjust to say, I love you, maybe consider sending them some curbside mariachi instead.

Consistently, Electronics Arts professional athletic brand EA Sports has anchored the company as one of the top video gaming stocks to buy. But even with the return of sports, my enthusiasm for EA stock hasnt changed. Thats due to a little something called an exclusive licensing agreement with the NFL.

Of course, EA Sports has other professional sports licenses, most notably its FIFA franchise. However, the NFL is really the engine behind the game developers success. And thats always been the case. But with the coronavirus pandemic, EA stock has a great chance of skyrocketing later this year.

For one thing, sports fans have been incredibly deprived of their passion. So much so that in April, the NFL draft resulted in record-breaking viewership stats. Even more intriguing, the draft was broadcast via a teleconferencing format. In other words, hardly riveting stuff in any other context.

But this just proves how much demand exists for anything NFL-related. With Electronic Arts holding the exclusive gaming simulation license of the NFL, we should see EA stock fly.

Bear in mind too that a cancellation of the NFL season isnt out of the question because of its high-contact nature. If so, thats bad news for the league. However, it might give a boost to Electronic Arts by facilitating an alternative.

Unfortunately, it has encountered some bumpy roads in recent years. Activision also didnt do itself any favors by making the Call of Duty series more fantastical than realistic.

But management decided to listen to their consumers, with excellent results. Specifically, the latest Call of Duty title is gritty, violent and relevant, with plot lines taken right out of the news. Its this pivot to making products that gamers care about that should help lift ATVI stock.

Additionally, the company has strong potential with its burgeoning esports business. Therefore, make sure to consider Activision among your gaming stocks to buy.

If theres one company that could use a blast from the past, its Sony. A remarkable consumer technology that epitomized Japan Inc., Sony made many blunders over the past two decades. Not surprisingly, SNE stock didnt really inspire most investors until a few years ago.

But the one business line that kept the lights on at this company is PlayStation. Every new-generation console release has been met with rabid enthusiasm. Despite some worrying economic metrics, I expect the same fanfare when Sony debuts its much-anticipated PlayStation 5 later this year.

Although my opinion doesnt matter much, I think I speak for most gamers in that the PS5 is gorgeous. Architecturally, its a dramatic shift from the familiar console framework that weve been accustomed to. In addition, many popular franchises, including the flagship racing game Gran Turismo 7, will be available at or near the time of the consoles release.

Plus, SNE stock isnt just levered to the gaming industry. For instance, its a leading camera optics developer for smartphones. So, even if the gaming stocks angle doesnt quite pan out, Sony is still surprisingly relevant.

As well, keep in mind that the average Japanese consumer saves like crazy. The American counterpart, though, spends like crazy. This could turn out be a significant differentiator in terms of sustainability down the line.

If you hang around console gaming forums, invariably, youll run into the PlayStation versus Microsoft Xbox debate. Frankly, I dont understand what all the fuss is about. Clearly, the PlayStation is better in almost every category.

However, I do know quite a few folks that are ardent Xbox fanatics. And lets give credit where its due: The upcoming Xbox Series X should give the PS5 a run for its money. Both are scheduled for release for the holiday season of this year. In addition, Microsoft claims that its upcoming console is the fastest, most powerful games console ever.

We shall see. But its amazing hype for MSFT stock, Ill give it that.

Another factor bolstering Microsoft is that its not just competing with other gaming stocks to buy. As you know, the software giant has successfully plied its trade in several pertinent sectors, most significantly cloud computing.

Further, Microsoft is an irreplaceable software-as-a-service platform. In fact, without Microsofts suite of business applications, I wouldnt be able to make a living. So, thats another good reason to buy MSFT stock.

If Im being perfectly honest, Im not sure how Alphabet will stack up against other gaming stocks to buy. On one hand, Alphabets video game streaming platform, Stadia, represents the next logical evolution in the industry. With everyone streaming especially with the coronavirus-fueled lockdowns Stadia, and thereby GOOGL stock makes sense.

However, theres another component to consider and that is the viability of this technology. Streaming pre-recorded content is one thing. But what happens when youre playing processor-intensive titles over the cloud? Will there be hiccups associated with possible server overload? To be fair, Alphabet states that its data centers are designed to handle peak traffic proficiently. If so, thats a plus for GOOGL stock. But its also a big if.

As a sole competitor against other gaming stocks, GOOGL would be a tough sell. However, what I love about Alphabet is that it essentially owns the internet. Youre not going anywhere if you dont have a strong Google ranking. In addition, its advertising reach is unparalleled.

Finally, lets mention Alphabets YouTube business. The first round of quarantines made this video uploading service attractive. A possibly sustained second round will make it indispensable given that it might be associated with a weakened consumer economy.

Thus, as a combined entity, I believe GOOGL stock is very attractive.

True to form, e-commerce and tech giant Amazon has been making noise in the video game arena. Since it loves disrupting anything that carries any weight with the public, it was only a matter of time before we consider AMZN among the potential gaming stocks to buy.

First, Amazon.com is a great place to buy games and accessories, especially with the coronavirus shuttering everything. Personally, Ive tried to limit my physical shopping as much as possible. This included signing up for Amazon Prime because at this rate, it would save me money. Yes, this is just my own anecdote but Im sure it has been repeated multiple times across the country.

Second, AMZN stock is increasingly becoming a direct play toward the gaming industry. Obviously, you have Amazons Twitch streaming service. Frankly, Im not entirely sure how the economics of Twitch work. But if youre really entertaining at playing video games, you can make a great living.

And dont laugh this off because for whatever reason, people love watching other people play video games. With the coronavirus bringing real athletes and esports together in an unprecedented manner, I believe Twitch can cement itself in the gaming narrative.

Additionally, Amazon has invested millions of dollars into creating its own games, including a science-fiction shooter called Crucible. I would be a little bit skeptical about Amazon if it were a standalone competitor to other gaming stocks. But as the all-encompassing disruptive giant that it is, theres no stopping AMZN stock.

Often overlooked among gaming stocks to buy, Nintendo is nevertheless a significant player. Its classic Nintendo Entertainment System truly pioneered the explosive gaming scene that we see today. Such is the draw of this classic console that millennials are willing to pay big bucks to rekindle some of that childhood magic.

Of course, Nintendo is all too happy to oblige. While the serious console manufacturers are all about pushing the technological envelope, Nintendo has found tremendous success looking backwards. Taking an unusual step, the company re-released its NES console to much fanfare. However, it can get away with it as NTDOY stock is not just an investment in gaming, but also in popular culture.

Thats not to say that Nintendo is a regressive company. Actually, it could turn out be surprisingly relevant. Right now, millennials represent the largest generation in the U.S. labor force, according to the Pew Research Center. Naturally, this means many older millennials are starting families, translating to shifted priorities.

These parents probably arent looking to get their kids started on consoles that could potentially play realistically violent games. Instead, Nintendo still specializes in wholesome family fun, which could see NTDOY stock receive a demographic boost.

One of the most powerful developments in the gaming industry is the expansion in platforms. When the first cell phones came out, users were very limited in their entertainment options. But as smartphones became the golden standard in mobile communications, gamers could find that they could take their craft anywhere. As such, Glu Mobile came to prominence with their smartphone and tablet-friendly titles.

The lockdowns also gave the company free organic marketing, which eventually served to lift GLUU stock. With millions essentially under quarantine, they had nothing but time on their hands. Moreover, not everyone wants to spend hundreds of dollars on a dedicated console. Mobile games provided quick entertainment for those who were looking to kill the time.

Interestingly, several western European countries saw a dramatic lift in gaming app downloads after coronavirus cases first started spreading in the region. Given the rise in GLUU stock in April and May, we likely experienced a similar dynamic at home.

To provide fair warning, GLUU is more volatile than other gaming stocks. However, we may not just suffer a second wave of the coronavirus.

Instead, it seems like were headed toward a third wave as colder weather, social unrest and a potential economic crisis converge. Put another way, its best to stay home and that may inspire higher rates of mobile gaming.

When I last wrote about gaming stocks to buy in the second half of June, I openly worried about U.S.-China relations. Because Trump had few angles to play, I felt that he would pound China relentlessly. As the consulate wars demonstrate, I was right to be concerned.

On the surface, this doesnt help the case for AMD stock. As a Forbes article pointed out late last year, China is the largest market for AMD products. Therefore, its possible that Advanced Micro could suffer poor sales in the country. And thats not a dig against the company. As I said, the entire semiconductor market faces risk.

However, rival Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) made moves when the company admitted that its 7-nanometer chips had defects, necessitating a contingency plan. That involves moving to third-party foundries. Obviously, the news cratered INTC but dramatically lifted AMD stock.

Additionally, as a play on gaming stocks to buy, AMD is quite compelling. First, the upcoming PS5 utilizes AMD processors. Should demand beat expectations and I think it will that should also boost AMD stock. Second, the companys graphics processors have tremendous appeal among hardcore gamers.

Finally, the cryptocurrency market may make a comeback, this time as a digital safe haven for millennial investors. Based on how AMDs crypto-mining business took off in 2017 when blockchain assets launched into orbit, we could see a repeat performance.

Easily the most speculative idea among gaming stocks to buy, GameStop at first glance seems a ridiculous bet. For one thing, game downloads have become incredibly popular, especially in the era of quarantines. Another point is that Amazon can provide the used-game experience with the convenience of ultra-quick delivery.

Finally, video game streaming can take off. So, why would anyone consider GME stock?

In a strange way, the coronavirus that makes GameStops competitors attractive also makes GameStop an interesting idea. Although social distancing is a concern among many Americans, so is making every dollar stretch. With a plethora of used games, GameStop can offer cheap entertainment.

Better yet, buying physical discs is a one-and-done affair. While video game streaming is an innovative concept, I doubt many consumers are willing to fork over monthly subscription fees. With GameStop, you only buy what you want, typically at a discount.

However, the case for GME stock isnt without risks. Mainly, shares are all over the map. Also, rising infection rates means that non-essential businesses dependent on a physical footprint may incur waves of disruptions. But if you have the stomach for choppiness, this could turn out to be a surprising pick.

Garmin outage: what’s next for Garmin Connect after the ransomware attack? – T3

The panic is over: Garmin Connect is back online and most subsystems are working properly too, after some of them going offline at the end of last week. And although it's great to have our Forerunner and Fenix watches working properly again, it would be great to know what exactly happened during the 'Garmin outage' event and how will Garmin ensure this won't happen in the future.

We can only assume the major shareholders of Garmin must know more than us regular people as the share prices are pretty much where they were before 23 July, after the dip in interest during the first few days of the alleged attack. Despite what Bleeping Computer says, the site that originally reported on the alleged ransomware attack, until Garmin actually puts out a statement saying "our systems have been hijacked by Russian hackers", we can only speculate what really went on and how the issue was resolved eventually.

Truth to be told, the combination of secrecy and recovery was probably the best thing Garmin could do to avoid panic and make sure people won't abandon their Garmin running watches after hearing the bad news. That said, now that the issue has been resolved, Garmin should to do at least these three things:

As relieved as we all are, we can't help but wonder: did Garmin pay the $10 million ransom, as requested by the 'Evil Corp', or have the developers found a way to eliminate the threat somehow without paying the money? The Times suggests "Garmin must have paid a large ransom to recover computer files stolen by hackers", but until any official communication is received from Garmin, we can't be sure.

How much the outage has actually affected Garmin we might never know, although it is clear that the issue had a broader effect on the company's broader ecosystem, including the aviation services, such as flight planning and mapping, Wired writes.

The Garmin outage has been a hot topic two weeks ago in running and cycling circles but not long after the rumours started circulating, Garmin announced on Twitter that "many of the systems and services affected by the recent outage, including Garmin Connect, are returning to operation".

However, at the time, the company also added that "some features still have temporary limitations while all of the data is being processed".

The ransomware attack on Garmin thought to be the work of 'Evil Corp', a group of Russian hackers who allegedly mainly targets US corporations, The Guardian reports. Garmin services started to go offline Thursday 23 July 2020 and many of the most popular services, including Garmin Connect and most of the Strava integrations, were unavailable to users over the weekend period.

As reported by The Independent on the morning of 27 July 2020, Garmin Connect was supposedly coming back to life, although at that point most users still reported issues with Garmin Connect. The website and the Garmin webshop was available, however.

Garmin issued a few statements on Twitter, stating the outage also affected its call centers and that they were unable to receive any calls, emails and also couldn't fire up online chats either, making a lot of Garmin watch users rather anxious.

In case you are worried about your personal information being leaked due to the attack, on its FAQ page, Garmin reassured users that there has been "no indication that this outage has affected [the users] data, including activity, payment or other personal information." That is not the same as saying your data definitely hasnt been stolen, but its a lot better than nothing. But never mind that, what about your run and cycle data? Is it lost forever?

As many people also pointed out, workouts can be directly uploaded to Strava using a USB cable but we wonder how many people actually went through the hassle of manually uploading their workouts this way when they could have just waited five days for the issue to be resolved.

Despite the fact you can't upload data to Garmin Connect, most Garmin watches have the ability to store training data on the device so you can still log exercises and sync them with Garmin Connect once you can.

The Garmin Fenix 6 Pro, for example, has 32GB of internal memory, plenty of space to store hundreds of workouts. Cheaper Garmin watches have way less, of course, so maybe dont try for any personal bests until this gets fixed.

The Garmin Outage has been going on since last Thursday when initially users noticed that certain Garmin online services are unavailable (making my life harder too as I was halfway through writing up my Garmin Instinct Solar review). Since then, Garmin issued the following statement on its Garmin outage FAQ page:

3. This is nota flex on my net worth. I'm a regular person, living a fairly regular lifestyle in the competitive business landscape of the overpriced Southern California suburbs. I don't have a pair of matching Lamborghinis in my garage, no initials embroidered on my shirts or other clothing, no girls in bikinis dancing around a pool, and I'm not taking exotic vacations in a private jet.

Also, why publish this now? The world is in flux and upheaval; unemployment rates are at an all-time high, in fact double digits worse, compared to the Great Recession. The short answer is because this all feels eerily familiar to a decade-plus-twoyears ago, when I felt so hopeless and afraid in a time of turmoil for my fragile new venture as an independent startup. However, despite the odds against me (and many others who found success), in my experience the greatest opportunities can be found (if we have the courage to seek them out) rising from the ashes of failure and during the hardest times.

I can trace most of my (limited) success to generosity, humility and tenacity--with an emphasis on the latter. If you haven't heard yet: There's no Prince Charming in this story. There are no rescue boats. No one is coming to save you. It's up to you to save yourself. Maybe harnessing your particular expertise and IP into a side hustle via YouTube might become a valuable thing. At least that's the way I see it.

I left a big job at a major Hollywood studio in 2007 to pursue my dream of building my own company. Arguably, I started from scratch at the worst possible time in history, although 2020 might go undefeated in the history books. I've had my share of "sand kicked in my face," given my blood, sweat and tears for the last decade and now I'm thriving. But the rent is still due every day. I love what I do and I'm grateful I get to do it.

4. I'm not a Youtube "guru"and the thought of having a self-proclaimed title makes me want to throw up. I'm a student of the platform with some level of expertise who is also working in the space with brand clients. I'm probably a lot like you--or similar to other people who are married with four children and trying to make ends meet and grow my own business to a place where I have more financial freedom.

Now that we have that out of the way, let's get into it.

I'm not the first person to document this kind of case study. I can think of a few other YouTubers who have made videos like this: David Dobrik, Mr. Beast and Graham Stephan come to mind. But I'm very different from these guys in many ways and my channel is between .01 and10 percent of the size. I thought it would be interesting and possibly valuable, especially to those thinking about getting started, to give a behind-the-scenes look of someone who has a "business" channel with only a little over 100,000 subscribers,instead of millions or tens of millions like the aforementioned.

Whether you're serious about starting something new, growing your existing YouTube channel or just curious about what's possible, I'm going to share the secrets of what I've learned over the last few years. Keep in mind, similar to just about any kind of professional advice, your mileage may vary. That said, these tips have been personally tried and tested as well as documented by YouTube corporate and other experts.

So what's your guess? How much do you think YouTube paid me for a video with 1 million-plus views? But wait! Before you throw out a number, subtract 40 percent to account for the revenue split with YouTube. Google has to get paid too! Now, what's your best guess on the paycheck I got for a video that went viral?

Side note: As annoyingly superficial as the term "influencer" is, one of the perks or leverage of vanity metrics (like a viral video) is that you might be able to use this social proof to work more with brands and the media. For those with real influence, this can be another big opportunity to monetize, but I'll save this topic for separate article.

The moment you've been waiting for...then some explanation and details below:

You are looking at (graphic below) the back end Dashboard view of my YouTube channel analytics page. The estimated revenue is the net take-home amount I was paid (receiving 60 percent of the money) after an approximate 60/40 revenue split with YouTube.

Yep, you're reading this correctly. By the time you see this article I've probably been paid over $20,000 (net), with an average CPM of $18.61. In other words, this video generated about $32,307 in gross ad revenue. I've received $19,453.75 to date and YouTube got $12,853. And this video continues to garner views and earn money while I sleep. In perpetuity. I'm very happy with the results, but they didn't happen overnight. In fact, this video was basically dead for 12 months until I resurrected it with a few key adjustments on the back end.

High(er) CPMs are where it's at. Assuming you've met the basic threshold of 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 cumulative watch hours, you can apply for the YouTube Partner Program and begin monetizing your videos. Once you flip the switch, you'll start seeing a full host of analytics including Reach (with CTR for click thru rate), Engagement and Watch time (a very important metric showing how much time is spent watching each video), Audience (who's watching, on what device, and from where) and more.

In the Revenue tab you'll see CPM (cost per mille) or "Cost Per Thousand," whichis a metric commonly used in advertising. It's basically the cost an advertiser pays for 1,000 ads to run on YouTube. YouTube also recently introduced a metric called RPM (Revenue Per Thousand) which is a more accurate measure of the true net metric after the revenue share.

"RPM is a simple metric that compares your total revenue against your views. It's calculated by multiplying all your revenue reported in YouTube Analytics (including ads, YouTube Premium, Channel Memberships and Super Chat and Super Stickers) by 1,000, and then dividing it by total views in the same time period."

Take a closer look at the timeline. When I first uploaded this video episode with author Mel Robbins in May of 2018, I knew it was great, but it actually statically flopped. Nobody watched it and I was really disappointed. To make matters worse, I was also sweating the underperformance because I asked my sponsor partner, AKA Hotel Residences, for a favor to let me film in their Beverly Hills penthouse suite in exchange for a shoutout in the video description.

No views was really bad news, so I asked AKA to be patient with me and keep the faith. I scrutinized the analytics to try and find the reason for failure but I didn't find anything unusual or telling. All I could do was to start a series of experiments.

The first thing I looked at was Categories. If you have a YouTube channel, go to Your Channel/Settings/Upload Defaults/Advanced Settings and you will see a drop-down menu to choose one of 15 categories for your video.

This list was not intuitive to me. At first, I didn't give much thought to it and rolled forward with the default People & Blogs, because I didn't know any better. Surprisingly, there is no option for Business videos on YouTube, which describes my channel best. After months of no improvement and desperate for results, I decided to change things up and switched Mel's video episode to Entertainment. This seemed logical since I think my videos are mildly entertaining and they are part of what I call a "show" and "web series."

What happened next was also unexpected:

What I believe happened after making the change (again) is that I further confused the YouTube algorithm. It seems like I was thrown into the deep end of Entertainment with huge channels, massive competition and even lower CPMs. Twelvemonths had passed since I first uploaded the original video and stats went from bad to worse.

The screen shot above is from Mr. Beast's channel with nearly 40 million subscribers taken from Social Blade. SB is a website that "gives all users access to a public database which, using advanced technology, is able to provide you with global analytics for any content creator, live streamer, or brand."

Side note: Social Blade currently has my channel Behind the Brand ranked with a B- grade. I guess it's fair based on the fact that there's a lot of room for improvement.

In my observation, Entertainment channels tend to get higher views but generally lower CPMs between $2 and $4. From my previous career experience in brand marketing on the client side, this makes sense. Advertisers are willing to pay higher CPMs for higher quality and affluent audiences.

My guess is that Mr. Beast's core demographic is between 10 and 22 years of age. While this group probably consumes more content, it likely has a much lower disposable income (and value to advertisers) compared to my core of business professionals. Mr. Beast's videos are juvenile and simple, but entertaining, with sensational pranks and outrageous social experiments. His videos earn less per view, but regularly collect 10 million views each. Uploading consistently onceper week allows him to rake in massive amounts of cash and my prediction is that Mr. Beast will become the first YouTube billionaire. Way to go Jimmy!

When I changed my video Category (to Education), CPMs continued to improve.

The screen shot above is from the last seven days of the Mel Robbins video and you can see that the CPM has increased from approx. $18 to nearly $34. The early progress I saw in 2019 with Mel prompted me to change all 600-plus videos on my channel to the Education category. It is probably responsible for a 10x increase in overall channel revenue. My videos get fewer views compared to the bigger channels but I noticed the pre-roll ads started attracting better brands like Mercedes Benz and Turbo Tax and my CPMs shot up to $15-$40.

I have continued to work on Mel's video and hundreds of others with a focus on titles, tags, thumbnail, and description to make sure the algorithm understands my content and serves it to the best audience.

Over the last few years I've been working with a handful of bigger brands and a few celebrity clients to grow their audience on YouTube. Here's a quick look at what I did for Kevin O'Leary's channel.

Without sharing too much, I can tell you that Kevin's channel was completely dead when I started on it in June of last year. He had a few thousand subs with old videos from 6 to 8 years ago that looked totally outdated and were gathering cobwebs.

If you know Kevin from ABC's hit TV show Shark Tank you know that he is ruthless and loves money. I was shocked to find out that Kevin had not monetized his channel. It was time for a total reboot.

We got to work and set everything up for him. We created a series based on his niche and started making original video content that his audience wanted.

Here's a bit of my strategy: Since Kevin (a.k.a. Mr. Wonderful) is widely known as the prickly royalty deal king without feelings on TV, we decided to show people on Youtube the other sides of Kevin. For example, did you know Kevin is a foodie and classically trained chef? He's also a rare-watch connoisseur, fashionista, guitar collector and musician who writes and plays music, and who is obviously very knowledgable about business and finance.

Note: this is not an ad for Kevin's channel and I'm not being compensated in any way to write for him. I'm sharing my strategy so that you can take a page from my playbook and maybe use this model for yourself. You don't have to be rich and famous like Kevin to do well on YouTube.

Every track he puts his name to gets millions of streams. Hes achieved TikTok infamy and rubbed shoulders with Drake. One of Australias biggest rap exports, he now lives in L.A., with a rap sheet that most kids dream of. And hes managed it all at just 16 years old.

Ever since meeting LAROI in 2018, when he was 14 with a dream and a finalist for Unearthed High, hes seemed destined for bigger things. Even now, with his first full-length release F*CK LOVE, you get the impression hes already thinking about the next milestone on the horizon.

F*CK LOVE is billed as a mixtape, but its good enough to be a debut album.

The production is top-shelf, the hooks are sharp, the guests are flashy. His vocal delivery has improved, too, sounding as commanding through AutoTuned crooning as he does dropping raw bars.

Six months ago, I didnt even know this project was going to be a thing. I only decided two or three months ago it was going to be a full official [release] and I started piecing the songs together LAROI revealed to triple js Richard Kingsmill.

Clocking in at a concise half-hour, the mixtape is filled with the kind of chart-ready melodic emo-rap that Lil Uzi Vert or Post Malone would be proud of. Trap beats anchor clouds of pealing piano and delicate guitar plucks. Its very much operating in the same musical atmosphere as LAROIs late mentor and friend, Juice WRLD.

In fact, Juice presides over the projects centrepiece, the one-two of GO and TELL ME WHY. The former is a collab featuring The Kids big bro, the latter is a heartbreaking ode to the gone-too-soon rapper.

Already doing titanic numbers (54 million streams and counting), the pairing is destined to be F*CK LOVEs most talked-about moment, but its also its most significant.

Combined, the transition from GO into TELL ME WHY feels like the passing of the torch from one star to the next. From Juice, now immortalised with the biggest posthumous album in 20 years, to The Kid LAROI, whos seized every opportunity thats come his way.

Freestyling since the age of 9, LAROI real name Charlton Howard has First Nations heritage and was partly raised in Broken Hill before moving with his family to South Sydney. He was just 13 when he first hit a studio and began uploading tracks to Unearthed and Soundcloud.

Travelling from Redfern to Glebe to attend school four days a week, he juggled studies with spots at triple js One Night Stand and Listen Out festival, and studio time with B Wise and Manu Crooks.

Chicago music mogul Lil Bibby spotted LAROIs talent early on and quickly signed him to his label, Grade A Productions, alongside Juice WRLD. Bibby had the young gun open for Juices Australian tour in November, which turned out to be his final shows before he tragically died age 21.

Its still weird to think about that, LAROI told Kingsmill. Its still fresh on everyones mind. I would hope that Im making him proud and everyone down here loves and misses him still. Its still pretty unreal.

When the 16-year-old first relocated to Los Angeles, he lived with Juice WRLD and his entourage for three months before his mother and little brother could make the trip over. It was essentially a musical apprenticeship.

He would be in the studio obviously every day recording f**king a million songs, and I would go in there and just watch him and watch how he was doing shit, LAROI recently told Zane Lowe on Beats 1.

Though he clearly has one foot firmly planted in the American market, he hasnt abandoned his roots.

F*CK LOVE has beats from Grammy-nominated Sydney producer Khaled Rohaim and long-time collaborator Haan.

Brisbane artist JOY. sings and produces on the closing track SELFISH, and a mural by famed street artist Scottie Marsh has popped up in Waterloo, where LAROI used to kick it before moving Stateside.

Unlike your average mixtape, F*CK LOVE has a strong narrative arc, documenting the hurt, heartache, and resolution of a disintegrating romance. The story kicks off in dramatic fashion, with a groggy LAROI waking up to his ex yelling down the phone at him on BOOTY CALL - the first of four skits that frame the release.

Its from a real conversation I had with a girl, LAROI told Kingsmill. I had her on speakerphone. My friend was in the room and thought itd be funny and pull out his phone and start recording her yelling at me. Afterwards we were listening to it back and I was like Oh my god, this needs to start the project!

Of course, it was kind of weird getting her consent to be on the record. I told her, Look, if youre comfortable Id like you to record some more. Thats how the other three skits came about Luckily, she said yes. Shout-outs to her.

She mightve agreed because The Kid LAROI makes himself the villain in the relationship as much as her, bringing depth to an otherwise simple, well-trodden tale of love lost. In the Drake-shaded SAME THING, he criticises his partner for lying, cheating, and playing games with him, before acknowledging hes not perfect either. I cant be mad, I do the same thing, he sings.

He runs the spectrum from anger and confusion - on earlier tracks like MAYBE and the hazy RnB of NOT FAIR to the regret and self-reflection of NEED YOU MOST and RUNNING (back to you).

Its like the saying You dont know what you got til its gone. You miss something more when you dont have it, LAROI explained. Im still learning Im super-young. I dont have a lot of time to be thinking about love.

How does a 16-year-old up-and-comer even have time to commit to romance? He doesnt. And thats what makes the anguish and turbulence at the centre of these songs authentic.

He might differ sonically, but like fellow prodigies Billie Eilish, Ruel, and Lorde before him, a big part of The Kid LAROIs appeal is how he expresses teenage angst with an emotional maturity beyond his years. He may not be able to legally vote or go to a bar, but he can convince you with his howls and tremors that the hurt and confusion hes feeling is genuine.

Hes never gone deep into detail about it, but The Kid LAROI had a tough upbringing, including his uncles passing and being homeless for a time.

Its been an interesting life. I feel like Im 40 years old at the age of 16, he told Kingsmill. But he feels grateful for his success, hustling hard to get to where he is now.

Me and my manager were talking about this He said Could you imagine if this didnt happen, where youd be? I cannot even imagine what wouldve happened by now. It feels like everything worked out how it shouldve worked out.

Thats an understatement. LAROI has swung for nothing less than the same ball park as the biggest heavy-hitters in the emo-rap game, and F*CK LOVE marks the point hes officially graduated from the ranks of rookie to pro.

Its probably no surprise hes released a mixtape of tortured songs about failing relationships, because romance - like everything in his life so far has taken a backseat as he ambitiously drives towards achieving his musical goals.

Anybody wherever Ive ever been in my life, one thing they can always say good or bad, I was always doing music and I always wanted to be a rapper, he said.

There were times where I thought, Damn, what if this doesnt work out? This seems really out of reach. I dont know if this is going to be possible. But its sticking to it. I guess its fate or whatever. Fate mixed with hard work and dedication, obviously, it didnt just fall in place.

What if youd shown the LAROI of three years ago all hed achieved now. Would he have believed it?

Yes and no I wouldve believed Id still be doing music, whether I was successful or not, he replied. But in terms of how quick everythings been moving and all the success? I definitely would not believe it.

But I definitely thought I was going to be a little further, he added, showing just how ambitious he truly is. With a debut album already in the works right now, LAROI is clearly in it for the long game. Cant stop. Wont stop.

Blogger sued by TV channel and editor over ‘baseless allegations’ – Deccan Herald

The Madras High Court on Wednesday restrained YouTuber Maridhas from uploading defamatory videos against a Tamil television channel and its journalists while directing him to remove all such videos posted earlier.

The action came after News18 Tamil Nadu news channel, its senior editor M Gunasekaran and senior anchor-cum-producer Jeeva Sagapthan filed a defamation suit seeking damages of Rs 1.5 crore from Maridhas.

Justice C V Karthikeyan, admitting the civil and criminal defamation suit, opined that Maridhas cannot make baseless allegations against the television channel and asked him to remove the videos that have been posted earlier on YouTube.

The judge also restrained Maridhas, who also runs a website, from uploading defamatory videos against the television news channel. Maridhas had, in a video posted on July 5, alleged that several journalists working at the channel, including editor Gunasekaran, are biased towards DMK and DK and are acting on behalf of these political parties.

The vlogger had sent an e-mail to the News18 management seeking action against Gunasekaran and others for their actions. A few days later, Maridhas posted another video claiming that he received an e-mail from the management of the television channel promising action against the journalists.

However, News18 Tamil Nadu filed a complaint with the police against the fake e-mail. Maridhas video had led to a major uproar in Tamil Nadu with opposition parties accusing him of acting at the behest of BJP by targeting journalists.

In the defamation suit, the news channel and the two journalists said Maridhas posted three videos on July 5, July 10, and July 11 levelling baseless allegations against them by claiming they are controlled by and biased towards DMK and DK.

The defamation suit said the allegations by Maridhas has cast a cloud of doubt in the mind of the viewers of News 18 Tamil Nadu which results in grave harm and injury to TV18 Broadcast Limited, the company which owns the channel, that thrives on the trust of the public.

The defendant (Maridhas) has promulgated the entire scheme posting the defamatory videos with a pre-planned ulterior motive to disrupt the independent functioning of the 1st plaintiff (the channel) and to discredit and defame the plaintiffs (two journalists herein, the petition said.

In the petition, Gunasekaran and Jeeva Sagapthan said Maridhas has not only resorted to the agenda of publicly defaming and spreading fake news against them but has also spoken about their personal lives without any verification or comments from them.

According toLooper's report, the Swedish YouTube vlogger and comedian began uploading his contents on YouTube starting in 2010 and becoming one of the site's biggest influencers as years passed. He was the first YouTuber to achieve 100 million and received the award as the most-watched YouTuber in 2019 as he reached 4 billion views.

"I am taking a break from YouTube next year," said PewDiePie.

"I wanted to say it in advance because I made up my mind," he added.

The YouTuber reiterated that he's really tired and didn't know if his fans can notice it. He confirmed in 2019 that he'll be away for a while, and wanted to give his loyal fans a heads up of his disappearance.

However, he returned to Streaming after a month-long break. According toDexerto's report, PewDiePie said that he didn't do much during his break from the video platform. He said that he has finally broken his 10-year streak of daily YouTube uploads and has successfully taken a break from his career.

"I have returned!" he announced at the start of his video on Feb. 21.

He also confirmed that there will be some changes he'll do gradually in his future content. The YouTuber admitted that there are also other things that he wanted to spend his time with, rather than just uploading videos day by day.

Lydia Jazmine, 29, is a recording artiste known for her great sense of fashion and angelic voice. Her songs include You And Me, Olindaki, Masuuka, Gimpe and Nkwatako, which is her latest, among others. As Jazmines manager Ronnie Mulindwa drove her to Nassim Studios, Quick Talk had a chat with her.

Yes, good afternoon to you, Quick Talk!

You may need no introduction, but tell me about yourself still.

Im Lydia Nabawanuka. I attended Victoria Nile school then Marys school Namaliga and completed my high school at Cityland College Matugga [where she reportedly met Feffe Bussi, who attests to her being a very bright student].

I later went to Multitech Business School where I graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration and Management. I come from a family of five but we are nine children in total.

How do you end up in music yet you studied business?

Music has always been part of me; however, Im still into business but doing music more. I have always been singing since nursery, in choirs too but then I started singing professionally in my second year at university.

Didnt your parents have a problem with your career choice?

My parents were very supportive of everything I did. [Quick Talk notices early that Lydia is not the conversational kind]

Moving on, what is your other hobby?

I like fashion a lot; it has always been my second passion after music. [That explains her always impeccable look.]

Are you doing fashion for business or just dressing up?

[Smiling] No, the fashion I do is for me, not business or anything else.

What do you do in your free time?

I spend most of my free time with family; I love my family very much.

Have you ever thought of marriage and starting your own family?

Yeah [silence. Quick Talk tries to get her to say more] I do and very soon.

So, how many children would you love to have? [Laughs] I cant tell, because I might say two and then give birth to twins; its only Gods plan. But anyway, I would love to have three children. [Quick Talk hopes the universe doesnt give her triplets, now!]

Would you encourage your children to follow in your footsteps?

Well, I cant stop any of my children from doing what they like, because I was not stopped at any time.

What is your ideal man, Lydia?

I would like a man who cares and understands me, because this kind of job needs one to be understanding.

Would you like your man metrosexual?

Yeah, of course!

Wouldnt that leave you insecure?

Not really; if we ladies take care of our looks, where is the problem if my man likes taking care of his looks? Its so okay with me.

Meanwhile, how has this lockdown treated you?

It has really affected musicians generally, because we used to earn from performances and concerts, something that is no more.

How are you making ends meet?

There are many things Im doing that I cant disclose, but we survive through recording our songs and uploading them online. [At Makindye, a delivery guy brings a number of hot tee shirts in different colours and Lydia chooses a white, beautiful one].

Thats a nice one. Is white your favourite colour?

Not really; I dont have a specific colour. I wear any colour as long as I have liked it.

Alright, back to coronavirus; has joining politics crossed your mind during this lockdown?

No way. I used to like politics when I was younger, but have no interest now.

What made you change your mind?

SITTING back in the plush back seat of 'the most luxurious car ever made', Supercar Blondie is handed a glass of bubbly and asked to pose for a photo that will go on to get hundreds of thousands of likes.

It's just another day in the life of the glamorous Aussie - real name Alex Hirschi - who has now been named the richest supercar influencer in the world, earning $2million (1.55million) a year.

The 34-year-old is one of many stunning Instagram stars who are regularly plied with gifts, flown across the world and handed a huge pay check for promoting supercars on their social media pages.

With millions of followers between them, the best of the best can bring in thousands of enquiries within minutes of posting reviews or videos of them driving a swanky new car in an exotic location.

But while Alex lives life in the fast lane now, her journey getting there has had some bumps in the road, having faced nasty sexist comments - and no days off for her first few years setting up her business.

Speaking to Sun Online, Alex reveals a glimpse inside the glam life of a supercar influencer, from travelling the world nine months of the year to hanging out with the Top Gear boys.

But this blonde bombshell isn't the only gorgeous lady doing it for the girls.

The blonde beauty, who has lived in Dubai since 2008, worked in radio before she became a supercar influencer on social media.

She says: "At first my mum and dad were like 'What? What is this? What are you doing? Youre throwing away your career on the radio to do, what?'

"And I was like, well... I film cars...

"They didnt really understand at first, but it kind of hit home in their small country town where they grew up when people were actually watching me and coming up to them and talking to them about it - so now theyre really proud."

Alex started building up her social media page for fun a few years ago, sharing clips and photos of her own growing supercar collection - always having had a passion for it.

As her page and personal reviews slowly gained more and more followers, she caught the attention of brands and manufacturers - and it's grown from there.

She's now paid to promote different cars with her own reviews, professional photos in locations around the world and by sharing competitions on her page.

But when Alex ditched her career on the radio to be a supercar influencer, men in the industry apparently told her she "didn't know anything about cars".

She adds: "It's something I've just had to really push through. There werent many girls doing this in the car world.

"Typically when you see a girl around a car - and this has been the case for decades - usually the girl is like an accessory to the car and the girl would lie semi naked on the hood, seen as a sex symbol.

"When you get someone like me who is not doing that and actually wants to be taken a bit more seriously, I did get a lot of push backs from the men in this world.

"But I just thought, do you know what? Ive got to keep going because you know that the more you see women in this role around cars then the more normal its going to become."

As the highest earning car influencer Alex can travel the world, rub shoulders with her favourite celebs and attend the most exclusive, glitzy car events.

"Last year I was actually travelling nine out of the 12 months of the year in a different country," she confesses.

"Ive been to some of the most interesting places. I went to Mexico City and met up with some supercar owners there and they showed me around the city and they had full bulletproof vehicles following us just in case anything happened."

As Supercar Blondie, Alex was also able to meet her childhood TV heroes, Top Gear's Richard Hammond and James May - filming an episode with them for her YouTube channel.

"They were so cool. Ive watched these guys for years and here I am filming for them, it was so crazy," she says.

But being a supercar influencer isn't always an easy ride.

"Yes my job is kind of cool," Alex says. "But it didnt come just overnight. Obviously this was a few years in the making and I have never worked so hard in my life.

"I know it looks like a fun and happy-go-lucky kind of career but at the end of the day Im running a business.

"In the first few years that I started uploading videos, I didnt even take one day off, no weekends, no holidays. Just kept going out every single day and filming and travelling around the world.

"Its exhausting - but at the same time it pays off if youre going to take it seriously."

The influencer plans to make her OWN car in the next two years now too - designed with women in mind.

She says: "Id team up with a car manufacturer who has all the expertise and know-how to manufacture the car and, because Ive seen some of the coolest cars in the world, I would kind of just combine all the coolest features and put them into the car that I design and I think it could be a really special car.

"I like that masculine, aggressive look but a lot of supercars are actually designed around a man and not designed around a woman so there are features in there that I would want for a female to feel comfortable in the car.

"Like mirrors on the sun-visors, youll get into some supercars and there are just no mirrors anywhere - and when I get out to go to a restaurant or whatever I want to be able to quickly check that I havent smudged my eyeliner all the way down my cheek or something."

She adds: "A compartment for a handbag, I would love that. Like right there next to you so you know exactly where it is to be able to get things out of it while youre driving.

"And a lift function to get in when youve got heels on, the car will lift up so its not as difficult to get in and out of the car."

In recent years, Alex has begun to realise she isn't the only woman supercar fanatic or influencer out there.

She admits: "There are so many women into cars and when I first started this and Id go to car events it would pretty much be just me and a whole bunch of guys.

"I would be very lucky if I would see another woman there.

"But now that I have been more established in the industry, I feel a lot more girls are coming out to these car events.

"I didnt think that I would have an impact like that so for me, just doing something that I love, around cars, and then actually having an impact and making other women feel more comfortable, that makes it all worth it."

Brit influencer Becky Evans, like Alex, is obsessed with cars and has turned her passion into an impressive career, having first started out in racing and now becoming an influencer.

The 26-year-old has already spent two decades gaining experience in the automotive industry.

Her Girls Guide To series, where she explains the pros and cons of various cars, are her highest performing videos - yet she reckons her audience is 90 per cent male.

Her impressive social media career has led to a collaboration with Redbull and a gig as the host of the online show Drift Queen.

In an interview with Marie Claire, she said the internet was shocked to see a young girl working on a car when she first started out her career.

"Once I got out of racing, I wanted to stay around cars, so I posted photos of the modification I did on my car at the time," she told the news outlet.

"And when I built my BMW E-21 and brought that out, things went nuts. It was like the internet had not seen a young girl with [a] vintage car before."

However she insists she's never experienced sexism herself in the industry.

She added: "If anything, its not sexism that Ive encountered, but elitism: if I have experienced sexism its gone straight over my head."

Patrice Banks, the woman behind Girls Auto Clinic on Instagram, is on a mission to inspire women to repair their own cars.

It all started when she attempted to find a female mechanic online, and was instead directed to a series of stock images of women working on cars in bikinis.

Her motto is: If you cant find a female mechanic, become one!

Her Philadelphia clinic - ran by women only - now provides manicures and pedicures while ladies wait for their cars to be fixed.

German beauty Sophia Floersch is a 19-year-old racecar driver and while she describes herself as "just a normal girl" on her Instagram, she is a very well recognised player in the industry.

She has competed in the FIA Formula 3 Championship with Campos Racing, as well as previously racing in the Formula Regional European Championship, Formula 4 in both Germany and Italy, as well as the Ginetta Junior Championship.

Sophia also won the award for World Comeback of the Year at the 2020 Laureus World Sports Awards in February, after being involved in a horrific crash in 2018.

Sophia fractured her spine in the smash at the Macau Grand Prix, after appearing to lose control on a tight right-hand corner - at 170mph.

After an amazing recovery, she told formula1.com earlier this year: "For me, its important to get better each race weekend, work together with the team and have fun. Its going to be a great year."

Despite being in an industry dominated by men, Sophia is fearlessly feminine and doesnt shy away from posting photos on social media in glamorous bikinis too.

The Canadian living in Los Angeles, 29, collaborates on sponsored posts with Karma Automotive, a Southern California vehicle manufacturer.

She's since shared photos of her posing beside cars, taking part in motor events and promoting her own car collection online too - with big names being promoted in each of her posts.

Sonja is also regularly invited along to automotive events and posts photos and videos from each appearance to her 416,000 followers. Not a bad job!
