Biomax Informatics AG Reaches First Milestone in European Systems and Personalized Medicine Project

PLANEGG, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Within the last year Biomax Informatics has established the knowledge integration platform in a research project to develop a new generation of healthcare tools for predictive, personalized medicine. The Synergy-COPD project, funded by the European "Framework Programme 7", will generate a simulation environment and clinical decision support system enabling systems medicine. Though generally applicable, the tools created will be validated using data from patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The project's goal is to improve patient care and healthcare outcomes, reduce errors and increase efficiency.

Leveraging Biomax's BioXM technology, a comprehensive COPD knowledge base with a graphical frontend for visualizations is being established. The system integrates five well-established simulations of human physiology with biomedical data drawn from experimental studies, epidemiological data, clinical trials, physician interviews, a multi-center longitudinal study on COPD phenotyping, and public datasets. Integrating with a Simulation environment, researchers will be able to perform simulations linking symptoms and pathologies in organs and tissues with other features, such as metabolic pathways. Building on this foundation, a decision support system will allow doctors to anticipate disease progression and optimize therapy.

COPD was chosen to validate the projects systems biology approach because it is a complex, heterogeneous, multi-component disease. COPD is also a major public health problem: it is ranked as the fourth leading cause of death in Europe and one of Europe's leading causes of healthcare costs. "COPD is the ideal target for this project, which aims to realize patient-centered, integrated medicine in general healthcare," says Dr. Dieter Maier, Biomax Project Manager. "Our aim is to equip healthcare providers with innovative tools that lead to the best treatments for patients."

About the Synergy-COPD project

The Synergy-COPD project is funded by the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) to develop a simulation environment and a decision-support system enabling systems medicine. The project's research partners are leading experts in the field of COPD and relevant technologies and methods for advancing COPD research. HUNTSVILLE, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

ADTRAN, Inc. (ADTN), a leading provider of next-generation networking solutions, today announced that Family Medicine of Port Angeles (FMPA) has joined the growing number of healthcare providers that have turned to ADTRANs NetVanta Unified Communications Notification Server (UCNS) to help it manage outbound client call flow. The NetVanta UCNS system enables FMPA to conduct, in their case, up to 200 appointment call reminders daily, and allows patients to reschedule appointments in real-time if necessary. This information has proved invaluable to FMPA as it knows in advance if changes are made to the next days schedule so they can plan accordingly.

ADTRANs NetVanta solution has already had a tremendous positive impact on our firm as it frees up staff time to better manage other aspects of our practice, said Kelly Steed, FMPAs IT administrator. Weve gone from a task that would have taken hours to complete if we had the time and resources, to a simple, easy-to-use process that I can set up in a few minutes each day. With this solution deployed, we now have a predictable, reliable notification system that is helping staff and our patients keep on top of their busy schedules.

The NetVanta UCNS provides FMPA the flexibility to send appointment reminders by phone via its out-dialing capabilities of NetVanta UC or by email, enabling it to contact patients based on their own personal preferences filed in a patient information database. FMPA is using its NetVanta UCNS in conjunction with ADTRANs NetVanta 7100 voice and data platform for a comprehensive VoIP communications system. This combination of technologies will provide FMPA with the modularity and flexibility needed to scale their UC programs as the practice grows to handle new patients and expand into new offices.

Now in use by hundreds of healthcare providers and other businesses around the country, ADTRANs UCNS has become the de facto standard for automated client communication programs, said Barry Derrick, ADTRANs Product Marketing Manager, Enterprise Networks Division. New Data Presented at the Society for Nuclear Medicine Annual Meeting Supports Efficacy Profile of Imaging Agent [18F …

MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Data presented at the Society for Nuclear Medicine (SNM) Annual Meeting shows that uptake of the investigational imaging agent [18F]flutemetamol correlates with a beta amyloid in vivo1 biopsy and can be quantified using a PET-only registration method.2 Data from other studies show that [18F]flutemetamol uptake is inversely related to measures of cognitive function in non-demented older adults3. Additionally, the [18F]flutemetamol dosimetry profile is comparable to that of most PET diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals4 and the biodistribution attributes in Japanese and Caucasian subjects is comparable. 5 [18F]Flutemetamol is a PET imaging agent in development for the detection of beta amyloid, which could add value to current diagnostic tools used by physicians to evaluate neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimers disease (AD).

The accumulation of beta amyloid in the brain is believed to play a role in the degeneration of neurons in AD and is one of several pathological characteristics implicated in its development. Currently, AD is confirmed by histopathological identification of core features, including beta amyloid plaques, in postmortem brain samples.6Targeted amyloid imaging agents are being studied to determine their ability to help physicians detect amyloid deposition in living humans.

Data from studies featured at the meeting in Miami show that:

Flutemetamol may prove to be a clinically valuable component of a broader diagnostic workup that neurologists use when assessing patients with cognitive impairments, who possibly have Alzheimers disease, said Jonathan Allis, General Manager, PET, GE Healthcare, Medical Diagnostics. Results from these studies support the potential role of [18F]flutemetamol in helping physicians detect amyloid deposits in the brain, and support our application for regulatory approval.

[18F]Flutemetamol is one part of a broad portfolio of diagnostic solutions that GE Healthcare is currently developing in the Alzheimers field. The company is taking a comprehensive approach to understanding AD through its ongoing research to uncover the causes, risks, and physical effects of the disease. GE Healthcares global commitment to advance clinical knowledge and provide a variety of technologies to aid in the fight against this epidemic may assist physicians in the acceleration of diagnosis and improvement of treatment decisions in all stages of the disease.

The company already offers a broad portfolio of imaging resources, which support accurate visualization of the signs of neurodegenerative diseases via state-of-the-art scanners - including MRI, PET, and CT - that deliver clear visualization of the brain.More specifically, our portfolio today includes cyclotrons and chemistry systems to manufacture PET imaging agents, PET and MR scanners to scan patients, and image analysis software to interpret the results.

GE Healthcare has been a key contributor to the Alzheimers Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) since its inception. The company also plays a primary role in PredictAD, an EU-funded research project to develop solutions to enable earlier diagnosis of AD, and in the Coalition Against Major Diseases (CAMD).

Additionally, the combination of GE Healthcares diverse business offerings positions the company well to offer an integrated global diagnostics solution to assist the pharmaceutical industry in its development of the next generation of therapies. To that end, the company is working with potential partners in the pharmaceutical industry to understand their strategic needs and design solutions, and help provide imaging support for pivotal therapy trials.

Penn Medicine Cardiologist Chairs National Report on Optimal Use of Vascular Laboratory Tests for Patients with Known …

PHILADELPHIA A new report issued today by the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and developed in collaboration with 10 other leading professional societies provides detailed criteria to help clinicians maximize the appropriate use of certain noninvasive vascular tests when caring for patients with suspected or known non-coronary arterial disorders. Emile R. Mohler, MD, professor of Medicine and director of Vascular Medicine at Penn Medicine, chaired the national committee producing the criteria.

"This is the first systematic and comprehensive evaluation looking at appropriate indications for vascular testing, such as ultrasound or functional testing," said Dr. Mohler, who is also a member of the Penn Medicine Cardiovascular Institute. "We hope this document will help clinicians determine whether or not and when to refer individual patients for testing."

Ultrasound and other noninvasive laboratory tests can be essential tools to help clinicians evaluate vascular blockages and disease, for example, in the arteries of the neck, kidneys, abdomen, and lower extremities, as well as the aorta itself. Such testing also plays a central role in surveillance of the vascular system in some patients to help inform treatment decisions and prevent serious problems, and is part of follow-up after peripheral vascular procedures, such as arterial bypass, surgical removal of plaque (endarterectomy), or stenting. Still, guidance about when and how to best use this technology in practice is largely missing, according to experts.

Such decisions affect a growing number of patients as the population ages. Dr. Mohler estimates more than 20 million adults in the U.S. have some form of vascular disease, and would likely be a candidate for these types of tests.

The panel identified common clinical scenarios when noninvasive vascular testing might be considered in patients with suspected or known non-coronary arterial disorders (e.g., narrowing or blockages in the arteries of the neck, kidneys, abdomen or legs, abdominal aortic aneurysms, arterial dissection). Applying a rigorous rating scale, the 19-member panel then assessed the appropriateness of each indication and often at different time intervals (3-5, 6-8 and 9-12 months).

In addition to looking at the reasons for ordering these tests, the work group also sought to determine how frequently repeat testing is needed in clinical practice in light of the need for ongoing surveillance in some patients.

The appropriate use criteria were developed in collaboration with the ACC, American College of Radiology, American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, American Society of Echocardiography, American Society of Nephrology, Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories, Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, Society of Interventional Radiology, Society for Vascular Medicine and Society for Vascular Surgery. The document is further endorsed by the American Academy of Neurology, American Podiatric Medical Association, Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, and Society for Vascular Ultrasound.

For more information on the new guidelines, please see the ACC press release.

Medicine Dispensing Systems, a Subsidiary of Medbox, Inc., Emerges as a Leader in Arizona Medical Marijuana Clinic …

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., June 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Medicine Dispensing Systems, Inc., a subsidiary of Medbox, Inc., (MDBX) (www.medboxinc.com) has successfully completed and filed 110 applications for the granting of medical marijuana dispensing licenses for its consulting clients in the State of Arizona. The company completed the lengthy and complicated process on behalf of groups and individuals that are seeking to open dispensaries in Arizona's tightly regulated market.

Neither Medicine Dispensing Systems nor Medbox, Inc. own any marijuana dispensing clinics. The company acts as a consultant and helps guide those wishing to open a clinic through the complex issues that regulate the medical marijuana industry, and the steps that are necessary to operate in full compliance of each individual States regulations. The company has become nationally recognized as a leader in obtaining positive outcomes in the application process due to their comprehensive suite of services, which includes in-depth consultations, securing special zoning permits, handling lease negotiations, and specifying specialized clinic equipment.

The company also provides their patented Medbox Dispensing System, which is the most secure and transparent method to assure patient verification and compliance with all state and local regulations. The system, whether by machine or the company's POS system, is currently in use by over 100 clinics nationwide, and provides assurance to state regulators that clinics are being operated legitimately, legally, and in accordance with all rules governing these types of clinics.

Arizona voters approved a Measure in 2010 that allows certain qualifying patients to obtain medical marijuana from a registered dispensary. The Arizona Department of Health Services accepted dispensary applications from May 14 thru May 25, 2012.

The DHS received 484 dispensary applications for 126 possible dispensaries. The state allows a maximum of one dispensary per each of the State's 126 Community Health Analysis Areas (CHAAs). Arizona, with its forward-thinking regulations and seed to sale transparent tracking is looking to be the gold standard for future States as they navigate ways to allow their citizens access to medical marijuana without creating a detriment to the community. According to Will Humble, Arizona's Department of Health Services Director, the DHS expects to award the Dispensary Certificates on August 7.

"Our company is focused on States that have polished regulations concerning medical marijuana. States like Arizona and now Connecticut are setting a proper example for other States moving forward that have learned a lesson from less organized States like California and Colorado. The numbers of medical marijuana clinics should be based on population density and awarded by the State, in a tightly regulated system," stated Dr. Bruce Bedrick, CEO of Medbox, Inc. "Policies need to be crafted on a State level at the onset in order for these clinics not to cause a nuisance on communities."

About Medbox, Inc:

Medbox is a leader in the development, sales and service of automated, biometrically controlled dispensing and storage systems for medicine and merchandise. Medbox has offices throughout the world, including New York, Tokyo and Toronto, and has their corporate headquarters in Los Angeles.

If you're like others, you may consider your mental and spiritual health to be equally as important as your physical health. Alternative medicineor nontraditional health caremay meet your needs by caring for both the physical and spiritual aspects of your life.

What is alternative medicine? Alternative medicine is a holistic or whole mind/body approach to health care that complements, rather than competes with, conventional medicine. When diagnosing and treating a patient, an alternative medicine practitioner considers not only the patient's physical health, but his or her mental and spiritual condition as well. Many different alternative treatments exist, including some that are becoming accepted by practitioners of traditional medicine:

Should you use alternative medicine? People who use alternative medicine often believe that good health is not just the absence of diseaseit also means being physically, mentally, and spiritually fit. You may decide to use alternative medicine if you believe that:

What is the difference between conventional and alternative medicine? Conventional and alternative medicines share the same goalthey seek to cure patients. However, they go about treating the patient's symptoms differently. Alternative medicine will often stimulate the body's natural recuperative powersthe immune systemto assist in the healing process. Alternative medicine is more apt to treat with natural substances such as zinc.

Conventional medicine often uses medications that have an immediate impact on the patient's symptoms. These are often manufactured drugs containing synthetic chemicals. The side effects of these medications can be more severe than those of alternative medications.

Alternative medicine often works best when combined with conventional medicine. In some cases, you may have little choicealthough alternative medicine may work well over time, your condition may require immediate treatment, and more conventional methods of medicine may be your only option.

Is alternative medicine really safe? Although it may seem like alternative medicine is a recent development, it has actually been around for longer than conventional medicine. Many of the medications and practices considered nontraditional today have their roots in traditional African, American, Asian, and European medicine. Because of their widespread popularity overseas, some alternative medications used in the United States may have already been tested abroad.

Many alternative medicinesand many alternative treatmentsdon't receive official approval from the Food and Drug administration or conventional medical community because their effects are hard to quantify. Conversely, these same medications and treatments are usually not as dangerous or invasive as more conventional treatments.

Here are some commonsense ways to make using alternative medicine safer:

Foundation Medicine Enters Extensive Collaboration to Provide Genomic Information for Clinical Oncology Programs

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Foundation Medicine today announced a new agreement with Novartis to provide comprehensive genomic analysis in support of Novartis clinical oncology programs.

Novartis plans to use Foundation Medicines molecular information platform across many of Novartis Phase 1 and 2 oncology clinical programs. The pilot program established between Novartis and Foundation Medicine 18 months ago has generated very interesting data, and this type of tumor genomic profiling has become an essential component of Novartis clinical trials. The partnership consists of running Foundation Medicines comprehensive genomic profiling on most Phase 1 and 2 clinical trial enrollees over the next three years. The partnership aims to accelerate the development of Novartis broad portfolio of targeted cancer therapeutics and ultimately expand treatment options for patients.

The comprehensive molecular assessment of Novartis Oncology clinical trial samples is expected to help to bring potentially lifesaving therapies to the right patients more quickly, and we expect that the wealth of molecular information will help fundamentally improve the way cancer is understood and treated, said Michael J. Pellini, M.D., president and CEO, Foundation Medicine. We are pleased to see our collaboration mature into a significant relationship between Foundation Medicine and Novartis.

Foundation Medicine uses clinical-grade, next-generation sequencing to rapidly analyze hundreds of cancer-related genes from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumor samples in a CLIA-certified environment. Novartis plans to use these capabilities in an effort to align clinical trial enrollment and outcome analysis with the genomic profile of individual patient tumors to drive development of new cancer treatments. Foundation Medicine also offers testing services to physicians and their patients through the companys commercial product, FoundationOne, which includes an interpretive report that matches detected genomic alterations with potential treatment options and clinical trials. The company may develop additional diagnostic products resulting from the Novartis collaboration.

Inside Medicine: Pros and cons of foreign-trained doctors

Somewhere around 25 percent of doctors practicing in this country have been trained at medical schools outside the United States (a good percentage are from India, the Philippines, Mexico, Pakistan and the Dominican Republic).

Some of these foreign-trained doctors grew up in foreign countries. Others are American citizens who were not able to find a spot in a U.S. medical school and decided to go abroad for medical training.

Collectively, these foreign-trained doctors are far more likely to practice in less desirable specialties like internal medicine, psychiatry and family medicine, and they are far more likely to practice in physician-short areas like the inner city or rural America.

They are more likely to care for poor patients, charge less money for a visit and work longer hours than American-trained physicians. There are studies suggesting that the quality of care these foreign-trained doctors provide is at least as good as that provided by the average American doctor.

Bottom line is that without these foreign-trained doctors, we as a nation would be in big trouble providing our citizens with health care.

Yet, too often foreign-trained doctors are ostracized and treated as second class citizens both by American-trained doctors and by patients. Foreign-trained doctors may speak with an accent, and some may be difficult to understand.

It is not uncommon to hear a patient tell the hospital clerk that they only want to see an "American doctor" and sometimes the language they use is even uglier when they make this request. I understand that people have prejudices, they have fears, and when they go to the doctor they are sick but these assumptions can be counterproductive.

A foreign accent does not mean poor medical training. Some of the very best doctors I've worked with have been trained outside of North America. Admittedly, medical schools outside the U.S. vary considerably, and there are some absolutely rotten schools. But there are many foreign schools that provide the same excellent level of training that is provided by American schools. Unfortunately, our American medical schools also train some poor doctors. After all, someone has to graduate at the bottom of the class, right?

In many areas, such as in the ability to do a comprehensive physical examination or to understanding the underlying science behind medicine, foreign-trained students surpass American students. However, there is one common area where foreign medical schools fall short and that is in the area of preparing doctors for the culture, communication and ethics required to practice in the United States.

As patients, Americans expect their doctors to listen to them and explain their condition so that they as consumers can participate in making medical decisions. Americans expect doctors to be honest with them and tell them the truth even when the news is bad news. In many countries, such approaches to medical care are not routine and are not taught. But foreign-trained doctors are smart men and women, and they learn Americanisms quickly.
