University of Florida offers shelter medicine program online.

GAINESVILLE, Fla., Nov. 16, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Gainesville, Fla., November 16, 2012 The University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine has expanded its shelter medicine program to allow veterinarians and veterinary students around the world to earn the Maddie's Online Graduate Certificate in Shelter Medicine.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20121116/CG15311)

This online program imparts the knowledge and skills veterinarians need to care for large numbers of dogs and cats. It teaches how to manage the infectious diseases not usually seen in well-cared for pets; how to prevent behavioral problems that could keep homeless animals from being adopted; and how to improve animal welfare by conducting forensic medical examinations and performing high-volume, high-quality spay and neuter surgeries.

"This graduate certificate allows veterinarians to enhance their careers with affordable and convenient training," said Terry G. Spencer, D.V.M., MEd., clinical assistant professor and director of distance education for the program. "This credential documents the student's extra course work devoted to becoming a practice-ready shelter veterinarian. In some cases, the credits earned can be applied toward continuing education units or an advanced degree."

Until recently, few veterinary schools offered training in shelter medicine, but UF's College of Veterinary Medicine is an early pioneer in the field, offering the Maddie's Shelter Medicine Certificate program to its on-campus D.V.M. students. The certificate's first recipients graduated in 2010. The school began offering the program's three core courses online in 2012.

"The online courses are taught by the same faulty who teach the on-campus courses. We are highly experienced in disease outbreak interventions, and emergency sheltering assistance," said Spencer. "We have consulted for shelters across the US and internationally, and our ongoing research has resulted in new and innovative ways to manage existing and emerging threats to the health and welfare of sheltered animals."

The Maddie's Online Graduate Certificate in Shelter Medicine includes three required graduate courses with the following learning outcomes:

Thai Customs Officials Sieze Hundreds Of Cobras – Video

Thai Customs Officials Sieze Hundreds Of Cobras
Thai customs officials have seized 600 deadly cobras after stopping a vehicle at a checkpoint in a central region of the country. The reptiles came from Malaysia and were being shipped through Thailand for use in traditional medicine or for food in another country, according to customs officials. They were apparently destined for Laos. The cobras were packed into mesh bags inside around 100 plastic baskets and put inside a truck for the long slow journey up from Malaysia. Some of them died on the way. Working on a tip-off, the authorities set up a specialist X-ray checkpoint in Pranburi, about 230km south of Bangkok, to seize the shipment of venomous animals. The driver of the vehicle was arrested and the snakes were put into the care of Thailand #39;s Department of National Parks and Wildlife and Plant Conservation. "It #39;s a lot (of snakes)," said the head of Thai customs, Benja Louichareon. "The Bureau of Investigation and Suppression have been tracking this case for a year," she added. Thailand is a major transit country for wildlife trafficking and this seizure follows that of 4300 cobras in May. Tigers and pangolins are also among recent finds by police. Officials estimate that the haul was worth around 500000 baht (10500) to the smugglers. The snakes that survived the ordeal will be released into the wild.From:you7uber1981Views:0 0ratingsTime:01:52More inEntertainment

Caster Semenya is a Man
Caster Semenya MAN or WOMAN? Female Track Field Record Breaker Caster Semenya who is about to undergo a required gender identification test gives me the run down on her success! South Africa #39;s track and field federation had been asked to conduct a gender test on an 800-meter runner amid concerns she does not meet the requirements to compete as a woman. Eighteen-year-old Caster Semenya is a favorite in Wednesday #39;s 800 final at the world championships. The world track and field federation requested the gender test about three weeks ago, after Semenya burst onto the scene by improving her personal bests in the 800 and 1500 by huge margins. IAAF spokesman Nick Davies said the "extremely complex, difficult" test has been started but that the results were not expected for weeks. The verification requires a physical medical evaluation, and includes reports from a gynecologist, endocrinologist, psychologist, an internal medicine specialist and an expert on gender. "So we #39;re talking about reports that are very long, very time consuming," Davies said. Semenya qualified for Wednesday #39;s final with the best time of 1 minute, 58.64 seconds. She posted the world #39;s top time this year of 1:56.72 three weeks ago at the African junior championships in Bambous, Mauritius. It was not clear what would happen if Semenya were to medal in Wednesday #39;s final and the test results determine she does not meet the requirements to compete. Healthcare Systems Engineering; Lehigh University #39;s PC Rossin College of Engineering
Designing Tomorrow #39;s Healthcare Systems INTRODUCTION Lehigh University #39;s PC Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science has introduced a new professional masters degree program in healthcare systems engineering in the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering (ISE). This need was clearly delineated in a recent report "Building a Better Delivery System: A New Engineering/Health Care Partnership" authored jointly by the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Engineering which urged the healthcare field to embrace systems engineering to deliver safe, effective, timely, patient-centered, efficient and equitable care. Why Healthcare Systems Engineering? This concentrated degree program is designed to prepare graduate students for engineering and management careers in organizations engaged in delivering healthcare and health related products and services. The need for professionals in this area is strong and growing due to the aging of the population and a national crisis of rapidly increasing healthcare costs. Healthcare has been one of the main topics in the news over the past few years. Some of the statistics below show what some of ongoing issues are in healthcare: bull; It has been estimated that 20 to 30% of medical expenditures may have had no meaningful impact. If I do end up making copies to sell.. I think what I will do is donate some proceeds to help Wild Bears as well... or the animal featured on future pages. I cannot begin to share with you what a privilege it has been to serve my patients under this system. Whether it be our elegant, private and functional surroundings, our ability to do house calls when necessary or our ability to accompany patients to important consultations. The unique things we are able to do under the best of circumstances are endless. Its truly medicine in the ideal, said Maron.
