However, people who control their heartburn with H2 blockers did not appear to have an increased risk.

The study that was part of a larger survey on gastroenterological diseases funded by Ironwood Pharmaceuticals was published online July 7.

"To our knowledge, this is the first study examining the relationship between PPIs and COVID-19 among a population-based sample of Americans," according to the study.

Proton pump inhibitors treat a variety of acid-related diseases, such as Barretts esophagus, which, if left untreated, can lead to cancer of the esophagus.

Because long-term-use PPIs also are associated with a higher risk of osteoporosis, dementia, clostridium difficile, kidney disease, pneumonia and deficiency of some vitamins and minerals, health care professionals have become increasingly concerned with the overuse of PPIS.

"Further studies examining the association between PPIs and COVID-19 and whether they increase the risk for more severe disease are needed," according to the study.

Upon graduation from medical school, recent graduates must further advance their training through a residency program. The graduate doctors are then known as residents until their training has concluded. For family medicine physicians, their residency program is three years long. During this time, theyll gain hands on knowledge and clinical skills that will assist them in their journey to become fully licensed and able to practice independently.

The Family Medicine Clinic is an ideal fit for Summit Pacific as their board-certified family medicine physicians and professionals are able to partner together to teach and supervise the residents. Researchers looked at 1,893 articles related to COVID-19 published between January and June and compared that to 85,373 papers published in the same journals in 2019. They found the share of women first authors dropped 14% for COVID-19 papers compared to papers published in 2019 and that the differences were most striking in March and April to compared to May. Looking only at March and April publications, the share of women first authors was 23% lower than for 2019 papers.

While the study does not assess the reasons for this drop, the authors suggest that during the initial lockdown, women were more likely to take on child care as the results show a staggering difference during the first two months of the coronavirus pandemic when schools were closed and researchers were told to work from home. Previous research has already shown women are underrepresented among authors of medical research and female physician-scientists often spend more time on domestic tasks.

Study author Reshma Jagsi, M.D., D.Phil., director of the Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine at the University of Michigan said: The coronavirus pandemic may be creating even greater challenges than before for women in academic medicine. We suspect school closures, limited child care and work-related service demands might have taken the greatest toll on early career women, especially during the height of the disruptions.

Philanthropist Bill Gates said market-driven factors should not guide who gets medication or forthcoming vaccines for the coronavirus.

Gates, the billionaire founder of tech giant Microsoft, spoke about the need for equity when it comes to treating COVID-19 and argued that resource allocation should give preference to places and people in need, not just those willing to pay the highest price.

If we just let drugs and vaccines go to the highest bidder, instead of to the people and the places where they are most needed, well have a longer, more unjust, deadlier pandemic, Gates said in a video statement on Saturday. We need leaders to make these hard decisions about distributing based on equity, not just on market-driven factors.

Gatess remarks came during a virtual conference about the coronavirus hosted by the International AIDS Society. He noted how the HIV/AIDS crisis forced countries to work together to make medications accessible to those who needed them, including in Africa.

One of the best lessons in the fight against HIV/AIDS is the importance of building this large, fair global distribution system to get the drugs out to everyone, Gates said.

AUSTIN, Texas Pedro Piedra, M.D., a professor of Molecular Virology and Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine, sat down with KVUE to discuss COVID-19 antibodies and testing.

Ashley Goudeau: Let's first talk about testing. Capacity has increased dramatically in Texas. But some doctors and scientists say it's still not enough. What's your take on that?

Pedro Piedra, M.D.: "I think we can do better. Diagnostic testing by PCR is the cornerstone of understanding how much virus is in the community, how many people are infected and what control measures can be implemented. And we have, I would say, a good amount of testing at the Medical Center. But when you go outside the Medical Center and go out to the communities at large, then it becomes more difficult."

Goudeau: And when you say the Medical Center, do you mean there in Houston?

Piedra, M.D.: "Here in Houston, yes. And I would expect that in many other cities around the United States you're going to see centers or areas where testing availability is going to be better as compared to out in the communities."

Goudeau: There are cases of people contracting coronavirus more than once. So when it comes to fighting the virus, how big of a role do antibodies play?

Piedra, M.D.:"So, I would take a broader view and it's not just antibodies. It's your immune response, and that consists both of antibodies and your cellular cells also develop an immune response to the virus. And both, it's a complex system and it's going to be hard to describe. But your body will respond in a number of ways to try to battle the infection. Antibodies is one of them. A cellular response is another. And both go hand in hand. And they're both needed. Reinfection will occur. When will reinfection, what is the time period when reinfection is likely to occur? We don't know. Or how long do you remain protected or partially protected after the initial infection? We don't know. And do antibodies predict how long you will be protected? We don't know. So there are a lot of things that we're going to be learning. If you think about back in March, we didn't know how to take care well of individuals that were infected with SARS-CoV-2 because it had not reached our community. But we've learned much better how to take care of sick individuals with SARS-CoV-2. And so there are many questions that right now we don't know, but we need time to pass so that we have time to generate the information and be better informed as to what to expect, especially with the issue of reinfection."

Goudeau: There's some concern among people that things will just never go back to normal because this is a virus with no cure, you can contract it multiple times. What do you say to people who are struggling with those feelings?

Piedra, M.D.: "Our population over time has been faced with pandemics, for which it has been difficult to cope with. And what I would say is to be patient, understand that this virus will be here with us. Eventually, several years down the road, it will become like other viruses, let's say, like an influenza virus, where the full picture on epidemiology will become known. Right now, because everybody is so naive, everybody has the potential to be infected and reinfected. That will change with time. And generally speaking, these respiratory viruses will adapt more and more to humans, which means that they generally become less virulent. They become more attenuated. They become weakened."

That's how light can act as a pro-aging agent," he says.

One outdoor pool in Medicine Hat opened to the public on Friday while Echodale Lake is scheduled to open late next week, though two other facilities are facing much longer time on the horizon before they may welcome the public.

A decision on the Crestwood Recreation Centre could come in the fall and Hill Pool, originally set to open July 10, may take longer than expected.

A tentative date to have the swimming area at Echodale Regional Park filled and ready for the public is July 13, city parks officials said on Wednesday.

Physical distancing measures will be required in and out of the water, while the concession and washrooms will remain closed, though portable facilities will be on site.

We want everyone to enjoy our outdoor amenities this summer, said Scott Richter, the citys parks manager. Beach-goers and swimmers alike are reminded that physical distancing rules are in effect, on the grass, along the sand and in the water.

Crews are filling and testing the lake this week. That water, drawn from the nearby South Saskatchewan River, is treated with chlorine and will be tested daily.

Strathcona Pool opened on Friday to swimmers who register beforehand, though Hill Pool, which had been tentatively slated to open on July 10 will remain closed as the city reviews the ability to reopen for the 2020 season.

The city previously stated that Heights Pool will remain closed this summer.

Portions of the Family Leisure Centre opened last week, including the fitness centre and arena, and staggered openings of the pool, gymnasium and field house are expected throughout July and early August.

In May police responded to 111 mental health calls for service.

Whether police are the best people to respond to such calls has recently provoked national and international discussion.

Insp. Brent Secondiak says Medicine Hat Police Service is also having that conversation.

I think theres a lot of experts in the field, on both the police side and mental health side, looking for solutions to the issue, said Secondiak.

It could mean having more mental health experts available to attend calls or providing additional training to police so that they are better equipped to respond to those calls.

Secondiak says different models are emerging across North America and MHPS is open to making changes.

Our priority when we are making these calls is safety, so it is public safety and safety of the person, said Secondiak.

MHPS is aware that the public may perceive that the presence of police at a home where there has been a mental health call for service may be more than is necessary. Secondiak says the public may not be aware of all the circumstances.

They are often very complex, very dynamic and the people we deal with in these calls are in a crisis state and a lot of intervention has to go on to diffuse the situation and get them to professionals at the hospital, said Secondiak.

In February police responded to a call where a woman who believed someone was in her home with a gun. She was partially naked and on the neighbours property. Police determined she was showing signs of excited delirium. A search of her home determined that there was nobody in her house and no signs of forced entry. EMS attended and sedated the woman before taking her to hospital.

Secondiak says there are calls all the time where there is an altered sense of reality.

In April, police responded to an apartment where a tenant, that was to be evicted, was threatening to destroy the suite and harm other tenants. After some time, that included him removing all his clothes, he was finally arrested and transported to hospital where he was sedated.

Another incident involved a male on the balcony of a fourth floor apartment. Secondiak says he was in crisis and threatening to jump. It was a high risk situation for police and the individual. He was known to police and there had been violence in the past.

Secondiak says those 111 mental health calls in May was not unusual.

We have about 1,300 mental health calls for service every year, said Secondiak.

Often people believe the presence of police at a home means a crime is taking place but that is not always the case, he said.

Changing that perception would help to remove the stigma and potential embarrassment.

Having mental issues is not a crime. Being homeless is not a crime, said Secondiak. Our goal is to reduce that stigma and fear against police.
