Newswise LEAWOOD, Kan. The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) has launched its first International Traveling Fellowship program tour, an academic exchange and clinical immersion initiative for sports medicine physicians to teach and learn sports medicine on a global level.

AMSSM will host Peter Brukner OAM, MBBS, an internationally recognized sports medicine clinician and researcher from Melbourne, Australia, as its first International Traveling Fellow. Dr. Brukner will visit a few select stops including the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pa., Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Md., and Duke University in Durham, N.C., prior to arriving in New Orleans, La. as a keynote speaker for the 2014 AMSSM Annual Meeting, scheduled April 5-9 at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans.

I am honored to be the first AMSSM Traveling Fellow, Dr. Brukner said. Australia and the U.S. have been at the forefront of many of the developments in sports medicine over the past three decades and I look forward to sharing ideas and experiences with sports medicine colleagues in the U.S during my speaker tour, and then hosting the AMSSM Visiting Fellows in Australia later this summer.

The purpose of the program is to encourage academic interchange, share research and explore common clinical interests amongst international sports medicine leaders.

AMSSM plans to host one International Traveling Fellow in the United States at selected universities for a two-week period each spring, culminating with a keynote speech at the AMSSM Annual Meeting. In addition, two young promising sports medicine physicians and one senior fellow from AMSSM will be selected to travel to the respective exchange country as Visiting Fellows. The inaugural class of Visiting Fellows will be headed to Australia from July 9-23, 2014 with Senior Traveling Fellow and AMSSM Founder Jim Puffer, MD. Stops are scheduled for Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney.

This program allows AMSSM to foster excellence in the care and safety of sports medicine patients, and it increases collaborative opportunities with international sports medicine societies and colleagues, said Tom Trojian, MD, chair of AMSSMs International and Inter-organizational Relations Committee. We are excited to start this new program and look forward to its continued success.

AMSSM hopes to expand the program to include future travel to Europe, the Middle East and South America by AMSSM members.

This program was made possible by the generous support the AMSSM Foundation received from DJO Global. AMSSM wishes to thank DJO Global for its educational support of this exchange of ideas and knowledge by world leaders in sports medicine.

Medicine Hat car dealer's death linked to victim of police shooting

Authorities are now investigating the killing of a Medicine Hat businessman alongside the fatal shooting of a man suspected of involvement in the slaying.

A source confirmed Medicine Hat businessman Chester Hunchak, who owns a used car dealership and rental agency in Medicine Hat, was the subject of a missing person investigation that drew city police to a rural property outside the southern Alberta city on Saturday afternoon.

The residence was the scene of a fatal shooting Saturday, when a Medicine Hat police officer fired on a man outside the home.

The shooting is being investigated by the Alberta Serious Response Team (ASIRT), a provincial unit that probes events involving police that result in death or serious injury.

In a synopsis of events released by ASIRT on Monday, investigators said a Medicine Hat police officer fired a single shot at the man when he got into a vehicle and drove toward officers surrounding the property at about 2:30 p.m.

ASIRT said officers also saw the man moving a body from the rear of the house prior to grabbing a firearm and getting into the vehicle.

Authorities have not officially released Hunchaks name or disclosed the identity of the man killed by police.

The incident began earlier in the day Saturday, when a Medicine Hat police officer investigating Hunchaks disappearance spotted a vehicle on the suspects property and pulled into the driveway.

Police said an armed suspect came out of the house and pointed a firearm at the officer, who retreated to his vehicle.

The officer immediately contacted the RCMP, which has jurisdiction over the area outside Medicine Hat city limits. Officers from both police departments surrounded the house.

One man was shot dead by police just outside Medicine Hat Saturday as authorities followed up on a missing persons investigation.

A missing person was reported to city police Friday evening with the investigation leading an MHPS officer to a vehicle located on a rural property just south of South Boundary Road on Range Road 60 at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The officer was confronted by an armed individual at that time.

A standoff involving heavily armed officers some with sniper rifles ensued during the afternoon. Police confirmed the man was shot dead when he attempted to leave the area. A news release from the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) released Sunday afternoon says a Medicine Hat police officer fired one shot, which hit the male, who later died from his injuries.

There is belief criminal activity occurred on the property prior to police arrival and the RCMP Major Crime Division will be investigating all criminal activities, including the confrontation with the firearm, said RCMP Insp. Joe McGeough during a joint RCMP, city police conference Saturday evening.

The age of the dead man, his link to the missing persons investigation and exact time he was shot is not being released at this time as ASIRT has taken over investigating the situation.
