MCAT adds more sections to 2015 version of exam

Aspiring doctors admission process to medical school may be different from what they thought.

The 2015 MCAT will include the addition of social and behavioral sciences, advanced concepts in biochemistry and more critical thinking, making it more than an hour longer.

The changes may affect the process of medical schools that rely heavily on MCAT results, but for UF College of Medicines admissions, the test will remain only a small portion of a students evaluation.

Leila Amiri, director of admissions for UFs College of Medicine, said it is not changing its admissions prerequisites, and she does not think students should be too concerned about the changes or the length of the test.

A test is one snapshot of a persons performance, she said.

Owen Farcy, director of pre-health programs for Kaplan Test Prep, said the changes will take effect in March 2015, making this years freshmen the first students impacted.

Medical schools are recognizing the role of the physician is changing, and the skills that students need to be coming in with are changing as well, he said.

Farcy said the reason the MCAT is so important is that it has traditionally been seen as a predictor of students success in medical school.

He said the AAMC, the company that writes and administers the test, realized its science content was outdated. The last revision of the MCAT was in 1991, and a lot has happened in the past 20 years regarding changes in medical science.

Medicine is an extremely dynamic field, and there are advances happening every year, Farcy said. Many of those advances and changes will hopefully be included in some way, shape or form on the MCAT itself.

UAMS advises patients of medical records breach

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences says medical records involving about 1,500 patients have been improperly disclosed, but no financial records were released.

The medical school in Little Rock said Monday the breach occurred in 2010 and involved documents were given to a lawyer by a resident physician who was terminated.

UAMS says the former resident kept some patient lists and notes after leaving UAMS. The information included patient names, ages and treatment-related data.

Patients are being notified by UAMS. The school says it became aware of the breach in October during a lawsuit filed by the resident. UAMS says a court order now prevents the records from being used or disclosed.

In April, the university disclosed that data from 7,000 patients had been disclosed in a separate breach.

Vote caps UT System administrator’s years-long quest for medical school

If Kenneth Shine was smoking a cigar on the evening of Nov. 6 to celebrate Travis County voters approval of a property tax increase that will help fund a medical school, hes not telling.

I cant admit to a cigar for health reasons. But in any case, we had a very nice, quiet celebration at home, said Shine, a cardiologist and executive vice chancellor for health affairs at the University of Texas System.

For Shine, helping to put the last major piece of the funding puzzle for a medical school at the Austin flagship into place is a signature achievement in a career that has seen several milestones. And at 77, he has decided this might be a good time to retire sort of.

Although he plans to step down early next year from his position overseeing the UT Systems six health campuses, Shine said he would remain in his post until a replacement is named. After that, he plans to work as a consultant to the system on the medical school and other special projects, make patient rounds with students and doctors in training at University Medical Center Brackenridge and perhaps teach at the Austin campus. Travel, fishing and writing are also on his to-do list.

Establishing a medical school in Austin was a priority for the UT System even before Shine arrived in 2003.

But without Ken Shines involvement I just dont think we would be where we are today, said James Huffines, a former chairman of the UT System Board of Regents who was involved in his hiring and who also credited Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa for a never-give-up approach to the plan.

There were numerous bumps along the way, including a sharp downturn in the systems endowments during the recession. It also became clear that the Austin campus could not establish a medical school if the funds to operate it had to come from its existing budget, because that could starve other programs.

The tax increase approved by county voters will generate $54 million in new revenue annually for Central Health, the countys hospital district, and $35 million of that is earmarked for the medical school.

Shine earned bachelors and medical degrees from Harvard University and trained at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was chief resident in medicine. He went on to join the faculty at the University of California at Los Angeles, where he rose to become dean. Later, he became president of the Institute of Medicine, the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences.

One of the greatest privileges I have had as chancellor is working with Ken Shine, said Cigarroa, a transplant surgeon. He is a legend in medical education and health care policy. His experience, intellect and drive are unsurpassed.

Tibetan medical school remains under lockdown, Three students arrested

A screen grab of the students' protest in Chabcha, eastern Tibet on November 26, 2012.

In reports received by Phayul, Chinese armed forces continue to cordon off the school, keeping the students captive within the school premises. Parents and relatives, on the second consecutive day, have been barred from meeting the students.

Five students, who were severely injured in police beatings, are said to be in critical condition and have been shifted to a bigger hospital in Tsongon. Around 20 students are still admitted in hospitals in Chabcha. Chinese security personnel have not allowed them visits from their family members.

Yesterday, over a thousand students from the Sorig Lobling medical school carried out a massive protest, raising slogans for equality of nationalities, freedom of language, respect for truth, and re-establishment of governance.

In a short video clip that has reached exile, students can be seen running on the streets, raising slogans.

Chinese armed forces used violent force to break up the demonstration, injuring many young protesters in the process.

The protest occurred after local Chinese authorities distributed a ten-point political questionnaire to the students and gave patriotic education sessions that contained disparaging remarks against His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Dharamshala based rights group Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy said the students were required to answer trap questions in the questionnaire titled Ten ways of looking at the present situation in Tsolho Prefecture.

The questionnaire contained questions such as, Who is agitating for separatism and causing unrest? What is the reason behind self-immolation protests? What harm is caused by illegal public protests? Does bilingual education mean the deterioration of minority language?

In 2010, more than 2000 students in Chabcha had protested against the Chinese government's plan to remove Tibetan textbooks from schools. This month, more than 5000 students in Rebkong carried out a massive protest demanding freedom and the return of the Dalai Lama.

Ed De Fazio = co-conspirator, not a judge – Video

Ed De Fazio = co-conspirator, not a judge
I will be debunking the statements Ed De Fazio made in this August 24, 2011 conversation. Ed De Fazio is the "former" Hudson County, New Jersey, prosecutor, now a judge ( ! ). He has gotten phone calls from, then, Congressman Robert Menendez #39;s office regarding the irrefutable evidence of federal student loan fraud that he has had in his office since 2005 ( ! ); demonstrating irrefutably that my complaints against Yeshiva University (i) came first, (ii) were made for federal student loan fraud, not aggravated harassment, (iii) no one wanted to do anything because for fraud in federal student loan programs a school loses its ability to administer these programs forever, by law there is no way for a school to re-gain its eligibility, and (iv) Detective Colon, 34 precinct, NYPD,, LIED on the witness stand to illegally incarcerate me in 2010. I am a witness against Det. Colon, Ed De Fazio, Debbie Simon, Tracy McQuaide, Judge Nesle A.
