is back with Buckeyes

COLUMBUS

Salem High School product Amy Scullion had already graduated and been accepted to medical school at Ohio State. She figured shed played her final basketball game for the Buckeyes last February.

Now shes back on the court. Sort of.

Scullion will balance her challenging medical-school schedule with the Buckeyes practice and game schedule this season. A starter a year ago, shes returning to a team that is short-handed because one player was kicked off the team and three others sustained season-ending knee injuries in the preseason.

I reached out to her when we had some of these injuries and she initially was very, very interested because she missed (playing), coach Kevin McGuff said on Thursday. But there were a lot of hoops we needed to jump through, No. 1 from an eligibility standpoint. And then secondly just from a practicality stance. Can she do what was required of her to be successful in medical school, which is the No. 1 priority?

The estate of a bus bench advertising executive and his wife is giving $50 million to UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine, officials announced Thursday.

As a result, a health sciences plaza at the school is being renamed after Irma and Norman Switzer, the late benefactors who were longtime residents of Pacific Palisades.

This exceptionally generous gift is an enduring legacy of two people who clearly cared about the future of medicine and science, UCLA Chancellor Gene Block said in a statement. The university is honored to be the steward of such a transformative bequest.

Norman Switzer, who died in 2011 at the age of 84, founded Norman Bench Advertising, which specialized in bus bench ads, and later became a real estate investor. Irma Switzer, who died in 2013 at 93, was a weaver and involved in local museums.

The Switzer gift will count toward the $4.2-billion fundraising campaign -- the largest such effort of any state university in the nation -- that UCLA announced in May to increase student financial aid, bolster faculty hiring and research, and construct new campus buildings.

In trying to reach that goal by 2019, UCLA said in May that it already had raised about $1.3 billion in a so-called quiet phase. The campaign ties in with UCLA's centennial in 2019, marking 100 years since Angelenos battled the Berkeley-centric education establishment and got the Legislature to approve a southern branch of the University of California.

The largest donation in UCLAs history was entertainment industry mogul Geffen's $200-million gift to the medical school in 2002.

Bus bench ad executive's estate gives $50 million to UCLA medical school

Just two fifths of doctors attended non-selective state schools, while a third were privately educated. Medicine is a very popular career choice, the guidance says, with fierce competition for places at university.

In a 30-page document titled A Journey to Medicine: Outreach Guidance, the Medical Schools Council said: The medical schools are determined to make a difference to social mobility in the UK.

It sets out a series of ways medical schools can increase their intake of pupils from poorer backgrounds.

Among the recommendations are that they should help support individual learners to make successful applications to medicine.

As part of this assistance, they should be aiming to offer support to students to make an application to medical school including writing personal statements and preparing for interviews and admissions tests, the guidance states.

It highlights the example of Brighton and Sussex Medical School which has introduced a five-year scheme targeting people from a low-social-economic group background with the potential to become doctors. Medical students, faculty staff and doctors teach pupils about clinical skills and the human body, as well as advising them on their applications to the Brighton-Sussex Medical School or other institutions.

The guidance also suggests that the journey to medicine should start in primary schools.

Pupils should be told about the qualifications and routes to becoming a doctor, the guidance says, and take part in lively and fun activities linked to the profession.

Medical students acting as ambassadors are often the best people to lead activity, which can include demonstrations, campus tours and mentoring, it says.

Some medical schools formally recognise this work by medical students as part of their educational development.
