Eight European researchers develop Ion AmpliSeq Community Panel for lung and colon cancer – Video

Eight European researchers develop Ion AmpliSeq Community Panel for lung and colon cancer
Life Technologies Ion AmpliSeq trade; Community Panels are a community-driven solution to gene panel sequencing that leverages the expertise of scientific thought leaders and the Ion Community to create gene panels for conditions ranging from cancer to inherited disease. One of the first panels was developed by eight leading European researchers who worked together with Life Technologies scientists to develop a 22-gene Ion AmpliSeq trade; Community Panel for lung and colon cancer. The panel analyzes more than 500 mutations in a single-tube assay that requires just 10 ng of DNA input per primer pool, about 25-fold less than alternative gene panel approaches. The Ion AmpliSeq trade; workflow is a simple PCR reaction that takes just 3.5 hours turn-around time. "Using classical methods to screen for mutations one at a time requires so much DNA sample, you often can #39;t look at all the mutations you want," said Dr. Pierre Laurent-Puig, MD, Ph.D., Professor at the Paris - Descartes University Medical School and a member of the OncoNetwork Consortium. "We have developed a tool that allows us to characterize tumors very easily, using only 10 ng of sample to screen more than 500 COSMIC mutations. Having these kits in our hands will accelerate throughput of the characterization of tumors and make personalized medicine a reality." The research institutions that developed the panel -- dubbed the OncoNetwork -- include Centro Ricerche Oncologiche Mercogliano, Italy; Leiter Genetik / Molekularbiologie ...From:iontorrentViews:9 0ratingsTime:05:38More inScience Technology

Seminar: Indirect Effects of Viral Infection (Jay A.Fishman, MD) – Video

Seminar: Indirect Effects of Viral Infection (Jay A.Fishman, MD)
Indirect Effects of Viral Infection: Infection in transplantation. Led by Jay A. Fishman, MD Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School Director, Transplant Infectious Disease Compromised Host Program Associate Director, MGH Transplantation Center Massachusetts General Hospital Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Content: Viral infections remain among the most important challenges in the management of the transplant recipient. This observation reflects both a predisposition to viral infection by immunosuppression that targets T-cell function, the diverse population of viruses, and the impact of viruses including infection, graft rejection, and malignancies. Traditionally, the manifestations of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection have been termed "direct" (organ-specific) and "indirect" (immune) effects. More accurate terms might be "viral cytopathic" effects and "cellular and systemic immunologic" effects. The clinical manifestations of viral CMV infections are the result of suppression of multiple host defense mechanisms, predisposing to secondary invasion by such pathogens as P. jiroveci, Candida and Aspergillus species and increasing the risk for graft loss and death. As the biology of viral infection is explored, many of these manifestations of viral infection appear to be mediated not only by T-cells but also by the innate immune system.From:VHIRtvViews:3 0ratingsTime:53:04More inScience Technology

Another Medical School Employee Charged In Gift Card Scheme

It was money that was supposed to help medical research, but it really helped former medical school employees rip off the system.

A Franklin County grand jury just voted to charge a third former Wright State employee with three felonies.

Two former Wright State University employees have already beaten a trail to the courthouse on charges they ripped off taxpayers.

Eddie Walker and sister, Tiffani Richardson, pleaded guilty in Dayton last month.

But now Watchdog 10 has learned a third person is also on his way to court in Franklin County for crimes allegedly committed at the university's Boonshoft School of Medicine.

State Auditor David Yost found the medical school employees ripping off the public university by siphoning cash and gift cards. It was meant for research, but they were pocketing part of the money, said Yost.

An audit showed $94,000 missing which includes nearly $50,000 Walker and Richardson took.

For his role, the Franklin County Prosecutor is now charging Todd Mathias with three felony counts, including theft in office and misuse of credit cards.

He's accused of taking up to $17,000. Yost said if he's guilty, the judge should lock him up.

I think people who abuse the public trust and steal public money need a taste of jail. Even if it's their first offense that shouldn't be a slap on the wrist, added Yost.

The Expansion of Medical Marijuana Acceptance Across the USA Progresses with Massachusetts, Montana (and Arkansas too …

WOODLANDS HILLS, Calif., Nov. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --GrowLife, Inc. (PHOT) (formerly known as Phototron Holdings Inc.), an innovative leader in high-end horticulture supply, today announced that it commends the huge step forward taken by votes in Massachusetts and Montana, which have now adopted progressive medical marijuana laws. A similar initiative in Arkansas remains too close to call at press time. These initiatives, combined with the even more progressive legalization measures passed in Colorado and Washington State, will almost certainly compel even wider adoption by other states and progress towards a more reasonable federal policy. For GrowLife, Inc. (www.growlifeinc.com) (PHOT) and other public companies that are already active in this multibillion dollar growth industry such as Hemp, Inc. (www.hemp.com) and Medical Marijuana,Inc. (www.medicalmarijuana.com) are very likely to see rapidly expanding opportunities as the normalization process marches from state to state, expanding the market and legitimate business opportunities as it grows.

"Marijuana has been shown to be very effective in many different medical scenarios," said GrowLife, Inc. CEO Sterling Scott. "The federal government has long grouped marijuana in the same group as cocaine and heroin, but the reality is that the drug has helped many thousands of people overcome chronic symptoms related to diseases like cancer, glaucoma, AIDS, Crohn's, ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and Alzheimers among others."

While prescription drugs kill about 100,000 people worldwide each year, there are no deaths associated with cannabis use, according to Dr. Lester Grinspoon, professor emeritus at Harvard Medical School. The late Dr. Tod Mikuriya, former national administrator of the U.S. government's marijuana research programs, also found that about 200 different medical conditions responded favorably to cannabis after seeing about 10,000 patients in 15 years.

Public companies focused on this emerging industry are experiencing rapid expansion as the regulatory environment becomes more favorable. GrowLife, Inc. (PHOT), Hemp Inc. and Medical Marijuana Inc. have all seen heightened attention in recent weeks due to the history making elections that have now been decided in favor of legalization and much expanded purely medical usage applications. Now that history has been made, these companies are positioned to become even bigger leaders in this sector than they are already, and the investment community has a ready-made opportunity to ride the wave. These three exceptional companies are being run by acute business men, that while compassionate towards the needs of individuals, are keenly focused on the bottom line, and what that means to their investors.

Lack of Primary Care Doctors – Video

Lack of Primary Care Doctors
The primary care doctor is a critical piece to the healthcare system, if not the most critical. By 2050, we will have a national shortage of 130000 doctors, 45000 being primary care physicians. The recent Supreme Court ruling that upheld of healthcare reform exacerbates this crisis. More people with insurance equates to more people who want and seek medical attention. We have outlined two major factors responsible: Debt (overall medical school debt and reimbursement of that debt through salary) and Burden (infinite knowledge expectations, social aid support that is beyond medical expertise, and the pressed allotted time per patient). Fortunately, organizations have recognized this crisis and are working to reverse this looming threat to our health care system. From:Kayla PintoViews:1 0ratingsTime:06:55More inPeople Blogs

Rubenstein #39;s journey into practical mediumship began in 2003, when a patient walked into his office to give him a message from his deceased grandfather. "The stuff he told me was pretty amazing," Rubenstein said, "he either read my mind, or he was in contact with the spirit of my dead grandfather." The psychic patient instructed him to begin listening to the spirits for himself, Rubenstein explained. A series of strange events followed, including a peculiar dream in which a short Indian man taught him about psychic powers and auras, and the astonishing day he felt a physical blow to the back of his head and heard a voice warn him about his car keys getting stolen. The keys did get taken, he noted. Rubenstein recalled the time he attended a family party where his cousin, a former spiritual healer, confirmed the psychic patient #39;s message about spirits wanting to work with him. He also recounted a bizarre experience during his first year in medical school, when he saw a "blond-haired snow queen" appear in ...From:USAMOONBASEViews:2 0ratingsTime:01:13:05More inEducation
