UMMS targets new therapy for Alzheimer’s – Video

UMMS targets new therapy for Alzheimer #39;s
An international team of researchers from UMass Medical School, the University of Bonn and the Center for Advanced European Studies and Research in Germany have shown that an immune and inflammatory process already established as a clinical target for rheumatoid arthritis plays an important role in the pathology of Alzheimer #39;s disease, meaning drugs now used to target that process may benefit patients with Alzheimer #39;s. This process results in the mature production of the pro-inflammatory cytokine called interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta;) and is involved in the body #39;s defense against infection. The finding, published in Nature, points to the possibility that drugs that disrupt the production of IL-1 beta;, such as those for rheumatoid arthritis, may also prove beneficial for patients with Alzheimer #39;s. http://www.umassmed.eduFrom:UMassMedicalSchoolViews:3 0ratingsTime:03:21More inEducation

Helen Wood – Video

Helen Wood
My favorite magazine at age 11 was National Geographic. I was fascinated by ancient civilizations. I wanted to be in their heads and know what they were thinking. I considered myself an archeologist of the mind. It seems, in fact, that my whole life has been a quest for meaning and purpose. I am insatiably curious about the way individuals think and in awe of what every person is uniquely and Divinely endowed with mdash; magnificent inner gifts and hidden gems. Most importantly, I #39;m intrigued by each of our soul #39;s true purpose. As a young child, I didn #39;t exactly find many other kids who were interested in the things I was. Although I did manage to find a social group and a few special teachers who gave me a glimpse of what expanse awaited me in the world at large. It was when I went off to college that I discovered psychology and philosophy, immersing myself in research on the developmental emergence of consciousness in children. I thought I had found the Yellow Brick Road, and was on my way to OZ and the Emerald City. I felt I had found my true calling. Unfortunately, my father had other plans. It was the end of my junior year of college and I had announced my plans to obtain dual PhD #39;s in psychology and philosophy. My father, a physician, was displeased with this decision and estranged himself from me. A year later, to placate my father, (though I wasn #39;t consciously aware of this decision at the time) I somehow managed to convince myself that I wanted to go to medical school ...From:shootcutdeliverViews:0 0ratingsTime:09:48More inNonprofits Activism
