Long-Time Fleet Managers Reveal Their Secrets to Longevity in Fleet

January 9, 2013

Why do some fleet managers last longer in their positions than others? Longevity is important, because if you want to be a great fleet manager, you need time in the saddle. Ive discovered that longevity is the secret to being exceptionally good at fleet management. So, back to my opening rhetorical question: What is the secret to longevity in fleet? Based on my conversations and observations over the years, there are four key factors: flexibility in the face of change, a desire to be a lifelong learner, the ability to have an open mind, and the management skills to be a team player.

Strong Survival Skills: Flexibility & Adaptability There is one truism in life: Nothing stays the same. A key trait contributing to fleet manager longevity is the ability to be flexible, especially in fluid situations, and to have the ability to easily adapt to change. You must be ready to change your professional direction, which may not always be the direction you anticipated or initially desired. All long-time fleet managers have demonstrated an ability to be flexible, even when management makes significant major decisions affecting the fleet with little to no input from them. Since fleet is ever-changing, you must be able to adapt to change, instead of fighting it. This professional orientation and philosophy will increase your fleet longevity quotient. Not only are long-time fleet managers able to adapt to change, they are willing to recommend change. A corollary trait is having a thick skin. No matter what you do, somebody wont like it, and theyll be sure to let you know you need to roll with the punches.

Motivated to be Lifelong Learners Long-time fleet managers demonstrate a continual desire to learn. By their nature, they love to learn new things and are motivated to do so. They are never complacent to be complacent is the corporate kiss of death. They constantly try to improve their value to the company through continual education in developing new skills. Not only are they motivated to expand their professional skillset, they do not hesitate to share this knowledge with their colleagues and direct reports. However, much of a fleet managers true education is learned from on-the-job experience the proverbial school of hard knocks. You will never gain this real-world experience unless you have longevity in your position.

Open-Minded to New Approaches One important trait of long-time fleet managers is being open-minded. They listen and give serious consideration to new ideas, but have the wisdom and sensibility to temper ideas in the light of fleet pragmatism. But, the bottom line is that they are not threatened by new ideas. They recognize that, even if they are the resident in-house subject-matter expert, someone else may have a better idea. They are open to ideas regardless of the source, whether they are from suppliers, industry publications, drivers, or employees in other departments that interact with fleet. It is crucial to be open-minded, because fleet interacts with various departments and user groups. Being open-minded is being open to new opportunities. This goes beyond thinking outside-the-box. It means removing all internal limits to visualize a goal and be open to whatever the best path is to attain that goal. Open-mindedness is the incubator to innovative fleet management, resulting in new processes, metrics, and technological applications.

Manages as a Team Player All great fleet managers, and most long-time fleet managers, are team players. Fleet managers deal with a diverse group of drivers, ranging from sales reps to mid-level managers to senior executives, with each group requiring a special finesse. Long-time fleet managers (typically) can accept criticism without getting angry or taking it personally. Similarly, long-time fleet managers are able to build consensus, which means getting others to work with you rather than against you. This means they listen more than they speak. They gather input from others before making decisions. They reach out and cultivate relationships with manufacturers, fleet service providers, and upfitters. More important, they maintain excellent internal relationships with all departments that interact with fleet and build long-lasting professional relationships. They are committed to a team approach to running a cost-effective and productive fleet that is responsive to user needs.

Thrive on Change The fleet manager role has been changing over the past 20 years, as many corporations continue to reassess how they provide fleet management and other support services to their internal customer groups. However, while good fleet managers adapt to change; great fleet managers thrive on change. If you can do this, expect a long (and rewarding) career in fleet management.

Let me know what you think.

Longevity is the buzz word for rested Federer

A disappointing end to 2012 left Roger Federer's critics writing his tennis obituary, but the Swiss is confident he can win more grand slam titles after arriving in Melbourne refreshed and refocused following an extended break.

While Federer's main rivals for a fifth Australian Open title, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, have been getting matches under their belt in Australia, the 31-year-old opted for the practice courts and family time to keep his mind and body fresh.

Federer, who is looking to add to his record 17 majors, skipped his traditional warm-up events in the Middle East and has not played a competitive tournament since losing a pulsating final to Djokovic at the ATP Tour Finals in November.

After playing only a couple of exhibition matches, Federer arrived in Melbourne last week aiming to become the first man since Andre Agassi in 1995 to win the Australian Open having not played a warm-up tournament.

For Federer, long touted as the greatest men's player of all time, the weight of history has never proved too problematic but for his critics, and some fans, there are fears that world No.1 Djokovic and U.S. Open champion Murray are now too strong.

Juan Martin del Potro also recorded wins over Federer in Basel and London at the end of the Swiss' campaign, and his stuttering end to 2012 left many believing an 18th grand slam title on Rod Laver Arena was beyond him.

After a sumptuous performance at Wimbledon in July gave him his 17th grand slam title and returned him to world number one, Federer was blown away by Murray in the Olympic final on the same Wimbledon turf, prompting American great John McEnroe to say the Swiss "looked his age".

Perhaps listening to some of the comments that he fatigues quicker led Federer to curtail his 2013 season, dropping some events to give his body longer to recuperate.

"Longevity is the word here that I am looking for and that is what I am striving for this year in 2013 to hopefully keep on playing for many years," Federer told reporters in Singapore last week.

"I love the pressure of playing the new generation who are coming up and improving quickly and I have to work harder than to stay at the top, or with the best," added Federer, who has had only three grand slam final appearance in the last three years.

Dopamine Receptor Genetic Variation, Linked With Active Personality Traits, Could Play Role In Longevity

By Brett Spiegel

History recounts Alexander the Great's search for a restorative spring, and Hollywood managed to age Brad Pitt backwards in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." But the true fountain of youth may lie in your own genetic code, according to a study published Thursday.

An offshoot of the receptor gene dopamine which has been linked to the pursuit of social, physical, and intellectual activity is more often found in those who live long lives than those who don't, scientists at the University of California, Irvine, and Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York found.

More from Everyday Health: Microvascular Changes Might Predict Glaucoma Subtle Cognitive Decline Follows Menopause Tanning Myths Targeted by New Salon Group

"Its been well documented that the more youre involved with social and physical activities, the more likely youll live longer. It could be as simple as that," Robert Moyzis, PhD, professor of biological chemistry at UC Irvine, said in a press release. While the genetic variant may not directly influence longevity, it is associated with personality traits that have been shown to be important for living a longer, healthier life," he noted.

The particular genetic trait studied, referred to as the DRD4 7R allele, appears to modify the effect of dopamine, which in turn appears to enhance a person's ability to respond to his or her surroundings, according to the research published in The Journal of Neuroscience. The allele is found predominantly in people over the age of 90 and, separately, associated with with longer life in mice.

Scientists examined the genetic makeup of 310 participants from The 90+ Study, a 2003 body and mind analysis of the oldest of the old in the United States. When compared with those aged 7 to 45, results revealed a 66 percent increase of DRD4 7R presence among the 90+ elderly, which was significantly associated with elevated physical activity. Additionally, mice lacking the genetic relative experienced a 7 to 9.7 percent drop in life expectancy when compared to those with the variant.

Even though a simple chromosomal happenstance can raise your likelihood of long life, if not eternal youth, Dr. Moyziz emphasized the importance of exercise in promoting one's optimal health and longevity. [I]t is clear that individuals with this gene variant are already more likely to be responding to the well-known medical adage to get more physical activity.

"The Fountain of Youth Is Hiding in Your DNA" originally appeared on Everyday Health.

Hamilton County denies longevity pay for magistrate

Larry Ables, Hamilton County's chief magistrate. Photo by Dan Henry /Chattanooga Times Free Press.

Hamilton County magistrates' pay and benefits once again came under the County Commission's microscope this week as commissioners questioned what benefits are appropriate for the position.

The Hamilton County Commission voted unanimously to deny longevity pay for Magistrate Larry Ables, who has been trying since last fall to resolve a number of pay and benefits issues in his contract.

Longevity pay is granted to Hamilton County employees after their first five years of service. But the magistrate position does not fall under the county's employee handbook guidelines, argued Commissioner Joe Graham.

"We have to re-elect these positions every year. So I don't personally see how anyone can build longevity pay since it's just a one-year job," Graham said. Magistrates' contracts need to be clarified, he said.

Ables has been a magistrate -- setting bonds and signing warrants at the Hamilton County Jail -- since 2007, and has been chief magistrate since 2008. The commission voted last October to keep Ables as magistrate for another year, but also chose Magistrate Randy Russell to replace Ables in the supervisory position, prompting a number of questions about how benefits carried over in the position.

The commission has had to take on the awkward task of resolving recent specific benefits dilemmas because of the complicated magistrates structure.

Magistrates hold their contracts solely with the County Commission and do not fall under the purview of general county government.

But the magistrates technically are supervised by the state, and the commission handles no day-to-day oversight of the magistrates office beyond appointing new ones each year. There has been no real precedent for how to deal with the questions involving magistrates' benefits.

The commission has already debated pay issues for Ables. In October, they mulled over whether to pay Ables about $2,000 in paid leave that he said he earned at the salaried rate he had as chief magistrate, which makes a higher salary than magistrate.

Genetic link to longevity identified

Washington, January 4 (ANI): Researchers have uncovered a link between a certain genetic variation - associated with active personality traits in humans - and longer life.

This derivative of a dopamine-receptor gene - called the DRD4 7R allele - appears in significantly higher rates in people more than 90 years old and is linked to lifespan increases in mouse studies.

Robert Moyzis, professor of biological chemistry at UC Irvine, and Dr. Nora Volkow, a psychiatrist who conducts research at the Brookhaven National Laboratory and also directs the National Institute on Drug Abuse, led a research effort that included data from the UC Irvine-led 90+ Study in Laguna Woods, Calif.

The variant gene is part of the dopamine system, which facilitates the transmission of signals among neurons and plays a major role in the brain network responsible for attention and reward-driven learning. The DRD4 7R allele blunts dopamine signaling, which enhances individuals' reactivity to their environment.

People who carry this variant gene, Moyzis said, seem to be more motivated to pursue social, intellectual and physical activities. The variant is also linked to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and addictive and risky behaviors.

"While the genetic variant may not directly influence longevity," Moyzis said, "it is associated with personality traits that have been shown to be important for living a longer, healthier life. It's been well documented that the more you're involved with social and physical activities, the more likely you'll live longer. It could be as simple as that."

Numerous studies - including a number from the 90+ Study - have confirmed that being active is important for successful aging, and it may deter the advancement of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's.

Prior molecular evolutionary research led by Moyzis and Chuansheng Chen, UC Irvine professor of psychology and social behavior, indicated that this "longevity allele" was selected for during the nomadic out-of-Africa human exodus more than 30,000 years ago.

In the new study, the UC Irvine team analyzed genetic samples from 310 participants in the 90+ Study. This "oldest-old" population had a 66 percent increase in individuals carrying the variant relative to a control group of 2,902 people between the ages of 7 and 45. The presence of the variant also was strongly correlated with higher levels of physical activity.

Next, Volkow, neuroscientist Panayotis Thanos and their colleagues at the Brookhaven National Laboratory found that mice without the variant had a 7 percent to 9.7 percent decrease in lifespan compared with those possessing the gene, even when raised in an enriched environment.

Dopamine-receptor gene variant linked to human longevity

Neville, who celebrates his 36th birthday next month, made his 500th Premier League appearance in the 2-1 win over Wigan on Boxing Day. His next target is to reach 700 career appearances, which he needs another 14 games to do.

The former Manchester United man demonstrated that he is still in good shape by returning from knee surgery three weeks ahead of schedule to play in the 2-1 win at West Ham last Saturday. And he is set to play a significant part when Everton host Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.

"The pleasing thing is that I have still got the hunger and desire to play on for two or three seasons," Neville told the Liverpool Echo on Friday. And Moyes reckons that the Everton captain could challenge his former United team-mate Ryan Giggs in the Premier League longevity stakes.

"I think he could, with the way he's looked after his body," Moyes said. "He's just returned from a knee injury, so we've got to make sure that's right. But I think overall, he's somebody who has conducted himself off the field to get that longevity.

"I think whatever happens, Phil could easily play on for two or three years, he's in really good condition."

Moyes is looking forward to renewing rivalries with former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, who will be in the opposing dug-out as Chelsea's interim manager.

"I think he always wanted to be back in the Premier League," Moyes said. "He enjoyed his stint here. I think, like a lot of people who come into the country, he enjoyed the honesty, and the way the Premier League is played. He's bided his time, Rafa, to get another job. Good on him, he's at a very good club."

Moyes, meanwhile, dismissed a report in Friday's Independent newspaper, which stated that Chelsea were considering a move for left-back Leighton Baines.

Canada, with its chart-topping percentage of college graduates, doesn #39;t make the top 10. A poll released Wednesday of nearly 150000 people around the world says seven of the world #39;s 10 countries with the most upbeat attitudes are in Latin America. Many of the seven do poorly in traditional measures of well-being, like Guatemala, a country torn by decades of civil war followed by waves of gang-driven criminality that give it one of the highest homicide rates in the world. Guatemala sits just above Iraq on the United Nations #39; Human Development Index, a composite of life expectancy, education and per capita income. But it ranks seventh in positive emotions."* What makes people really happy and positive? Is it wealth? Respect? Longevity? A poll found that 7 of then world #39;s 10 happiest countries have one thing in common, and it isn #39;t money.
