Liberty appoints interim treasurer

LIBERTY - Two districts may soon share a treasurer.

Rhonda Baldwin-Amorganos, treasurer for Hubbard Schools, was appointed the interim treasurer for Liberty Schools in a special meeting Monday.

The former treasurer, James Wilson, submitted his resignation to the board in October; it became effective Friday.

Baldwin-Amorganos will serve for the period ending Dec. 17, at which time both boards will decide whether to make the position permanent.

It is Liberty's intention to hire her under a shared service agreement, which Superintendent Stan Watson said is a ground-breaking move to save as much money as possible and still get an effective and accomplished person.

"She's got a lot of experience doing this and is capable of working in a dual-function position," Watson said.

Baldwin-Amorganos said although she'd be working in two different places, she expects few challenges.

She said the dual position may be a little bit overwhelming at first, but since they are neighboring districts, it will be easy for her to go back and forth between them.

"The staff here is wonderful," she said, explaining that as long as the staff is strong, the treasurer is free to perform necessary tasks, and everything falls into place.

Baldwin-Amorganos has served as Hubbard's treasurer since 2007.

RICHLAND, Wash. -- The Liberty Christian Patriots are back home to show off their 1B state trophy. Saturday Liberty Christian defeated Neah Bay on the last play of the game, winning 34-28. The Patriots steam-rolled through their conference play, winning by no less than 40 points per game, but in the semifinal and championship games they won by a total of eight points. The Patriots are still getting used to the title, state champs.

"We'll its awesome and it's hard to compare because it's the first state championship that I've ever had. But it's exciting, I sometimes wonder if it's really totally set in yet, I guess. It was a lot of hard work and so it's a little bit of a relief at the same time, you know, knowing that you were able to accomplish your goal," head coach Mike Olson said.

Dave Brown out as Liberty football coach

The Liberty football team finished the 2012 season on a high note, winning three of its last four games.

Coach Dave Brown won't be around to see if the Hurricanes can build on their strong ending.

Brown confirmed in an email late Monday evening that he will not return at Liberty after a three-year run in which he went 18-16. The Hurricanes finished 3-7 overall and 3-6 in the Lehigh Valley Conference this season, losing their first six games before beating Emmaus, Northampton and archrival Freedom over the final month.

Brown became Liberty's coach in April 2010 following the March 2010 resignation of Tim Moncman, who led Liberty to three PIAA Class 4A finals and the 2008 4A state title. The Hurricanes never reached the District 11 playoffs in Brown's three seasons but did twice qualify for the Eastern Conference 4A playoffs, winning the title in 2011. They graduated 10 offensive and nine defensive starters from that 2011 team, contributing to their struggles this season.

"I would like to thank my family, players, parents, teachers, administrators, assistant coaches, support staff and fans who supported our football program during my three seasons as the Head Football Coach at Liberty High School," Brown's email said. "Our young men were held accountable on and off the field and hopefully, I was a positive role model in their lives.

"Unfortunately, the expectations are higher on the field than what we achieved over the last three seasons and as the head coach, I am ultimately responsible for that. There are many returning players coming back next season and I expect to see them doing great things and wish them nothing but the best."

In a text message to The Morning Call, Brown indicated that he did not step down voluntarily. He said that he did not resign.

Liberty will return one of the top prospects in the state next season in junior wide receiver K.J. Williams, who caught 59 passes for 986 yards and 10 touchdowns this season. The Hurricanes also will bring back two quarterbacks who played this season, junior Derek Byrd and freshman Doug Erney.

Byrd was the starter at the beginning of the year and threw for 1,000 yards. Erney started Liberty's last two games, beating Northampton and Freedom. He finished the season with 615 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions on 68 attempts.

Tulsa, Iowa State will meet in Liberty Bowl

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Conference USA champion Tulsa will get another shot at Iowa State when the teams meet in the Liberty Bowl.

Tulsa (10-3) earned its Liberty Bowl bid Saturday by defeating UCF 33-27 in overtime. The Golden Hurricane will face Iowa State, which defeated Tulsa 38-23 on Sept. 1 in the season opener for both teams.

Iowa State also is scheduled to play at Tulsa next season, so they'll end up meeting three times in barely over a year.

''There's reason for concern there, but it's easy to overlook that because you're playing postseason football in a great venue, a bowl game with a rich history, the seventh-oldest bowl,'' said Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads. ''Regardless of the opponent and playing them twice in a year and playing them again on their home turf in 2013, we're thrilled to be bowling against a very, very good Tulsa football team.''

The Liberty Bowl has a partnership with the Southeastern Conference, which didn't have enough bowl-eligible teams to send anyone to Memphis this season. Liberty Bowl officials filled that spot in the game by inviting Iowa State from the Big 12.

Iowa State (6-6) won four of its first five games this season, but the Cyclones have gone 2-5 since. Iowa State was picked ahead of Louisiana Tech (9-3) and Middle Tennessee (8-4), who won't be playing in bowl games. The Cyclones are making their first Liberty Bowl appearance since 1972, when they lost 31-30 to Georgia Tech.

Liberty Bowl executive director Steve Ehrhart cited Iowa State's fan base, its schedule strength and the bowl's desire to build a relationship with the Big 12 as a few of his reasons for selecting the Cyclones. Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard said over 40,000 Iowa State alumni live within a day's drive of the Liberty Bowl.

This marks the fourth time in the last six years that Tulsa has won at least 10 games. The Golden Hurricane will be playing in the Liberty Bowl for the first time since a 31-24 victory over Fresno State in 2005.

When the teams last met, Iowa State's Steele Jantz threw two touchdown passes and Shontrelle Johnson rushed for 120 yards as the Cyclones rallied after falling behind 16-7 in the first quarter. Trey Watts rushed for 125 yards and Cody Green threw two touchdown passes for Tulsa.

''There's no question that Iowa State is well coached and obviously, like us, have gone through transition since we met in the season opener,'' Tulsa coach Bill Blankenship said. ''Iowa State has tremendous talent on their football team and played an excellent schedule in the Big 12 conference. Coach Rhoads has done an outstanding job in his four seasons. It will be a great challenge for our football team.''

No estimate on reopening Liberty Island; statue OK

NEW YORK (AP) The Statue of Liberty survived Superstorm Sandy with every crown spike in place, but its surrounding island was so badly damaged that the National Park Service doesn't know when the beloved tourist attraction will reopen or how much repairs will cost.

A tour of Liberty Island on Friday showed broken railings, torn-up paving stones, damaged equipment and flood-wrecked buildings.

The storm destroyed boilers, sewage pumps and electrical systems, said David Luchsinger, the superintendent of the Statue of Liberty and of the neighboring Ellis Island.

"Our entire infrastructure on both islands, both Liberty Island and Ellis Island, was under water," he said.

Luchsinger estimated that 75 percent of Liberty Island's 12 acres was flooded, with water as high as 8 feet. The water would have been chest-high on the plaza that visitors cross en route from the ferry to the statue itself, he said.

Days after the storm, there was a controlled detonation of explosives on Ellis Island. Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst said the explosives were stored there to train bomb-sniffing dogs. They were compromised by the storm and had to be destroyed.

The Oct. 29 storm came one day after the Statue of Liberty's 126th birthday and the grand reopening of the crown though the park was closed at the time in advance of the storm. The crown had been closed for a year for a $30 million upgrade to the monument's fire alarms, sprinkler systems and exit routes.

The rest of the statue was open during that year and had 3.7 million visitors last year, making it the 19th most visited national park in the nation.

Luchsinger said Sandy did not damage any of the work completed during the renovation.

"I can tell you that if you walked in there today it would look like we just reopened it," he said. "Not one dime of it was lost."

The Trap: We Will Force You To Be Free (3/3 BBC)
Part1: youtu.be Part2: youtu.be The Trap: What Happened to Our Dream of Freedom is a BBC documentary series by English filmmaker Adam Curtis, well known for other documentaries including The Century of the Self and The Power of Nightmares. It began airing in the United Kingdom on BBC Two on 11 March 2007. The series consists of three one-hour programmes which explore the concept and definition of freedom, specifically, "how a simplistic model of human beings as self-seeking, almost robotic, creatures led to today #39;s idea of freedom." The final programme focussed on the concepts of positive and negative liberty introduced in the 1950s by Isaiah Berlin. Curtis briefly explained how negative liberty could be defined as freedom from coercion and positive liberty as the opportunity to strive to fulfill one #39;s potential. Tony Blair had read Berlin #39;s essays on the topic and wrote to him in the late 1990s, arguing that positive and negative liberty could be mutually compatible. He never received a reply, as Berlin was on his death bed. This programme also explored how economic freedom had been used in Russia and the problems this had introduced. A set of policies known as "shock therapy" were brought in mainly by outsiders, which had the effect of destroying the social safety net that existed in most other western nations and Russia. In the latter, the sudden removal of eg the subsidies for basic goods caused their prices to rise enormously, making them hardly affordable for ...From:TimesOfRoseViews:2 1ratingsTime:00:00More inEducation
