Liberty Boys Oust Coronado In Sunrise Region Play-In

Posted: Feb. 12, 2013 | 2:02 a.m.

At the conclusion of the regular season, the Coronado and Liberty boys basketball teams looked identical on paper.

They were easy to tell apart Monday night. The Patriots were the team making free throws.

Liberty made 15 of its first 17 foul shots in the second half and used a game-changing run in the third quarter to beat the Cougars 62-55 in a Division I Sunrise Region play-in game at Silverado.

The Patriots (10-16) advance to play at Las Vegas (18-9), the top seed from the Northeast League, at 6:30 p.m. today in the Sunrise quarterfinals.

Coronado and Liberty tied for fourth place in the Southeast League with 4-6 records. The teams were forced to play Monday after splitting the season series and collecting their other three league wins against the same opponents.

"Our staff knew it was going to be a challenge from the very beginning, but we believed in the kids the entire year," said Quintin Lester, in his first season as Liberty's coach after three wildly successful years with the school's girls program. "The early part of the year built us for this right here."

Jeremy Lontayao led the Patriots with 22 points. Dartavious Young had 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Kai Nacua added 10 points.

Liberty trailed 31-25 at halftime and was down 36-31 midway through the third quarter, but turned the game around by forcing eight turnovers in the period. Melvin Rushing's steal and layup helped spark a 12-2 run to close the quarter, and Nacua's 8-foot jumper put the Patriots up 45-38 early in the fourth quarter.

"We saw from some of the previous meetings they didn't like our pressure," Lester said. "We were just waiting for the right moment. Getting down early forced us to try to create more possessions. Our halfcourt trap was pretty effective for us."

Liberty Ross coping with split

Despite sitting in the front row at Alexander Wang's fashion show in New York City Feb. 9, Liberty Ross said she plans to keep a low-profile after filing for divorce from Rupert Sanders in late January.

The key to moving forward, Ross told the Associated Press at the event, is "keeping her head down" and "listening to her heart." The model married the "Snow White and the Huntsman" director in 2002; they are parents to daughter Skyla, 7, and son Tennyson, 5.

Ross filed for divorce six months after Us Weekly exposed Sanders' affair with the film's leading lady, Kristen Stewart. "She wasn't very happy, even before all this happened," a source recently said of Ross, 34. "Rupert put a lot of pressure on her to change her life for him and they moved to L.A. for him. She was such a big deal in England -- a bigger deal than him even."

In the divorce papers filed Jan. 25, Ross asked for joint custody of their children, in addition to spousal support and attorney's fees. Sanders, 42, is also seeking joint custody, but he has not asked for spousal support.

"They gave it a shot for the kids, [but] she was just so angry," a second source told Us of Ross' inability to forgive Sanders for his steamy makeout session with Stewart. "She's the kind of person who wouldn't really ever get over it."

Even so, a source added, the decision to end their marriage "was definitely mutual." Stewart, meanwhile, is still dating her longtime boyfriend and Twilight costar Robert Pattinson.

Liberty grapplers fall short of first state title

Liberty fell behind in the first four matches came up short of its first team state title in school history in a 48-22 loss to two-time defending state champion Bamberg-Ehrhardt Saturday in the Class 2A/A wrestling dual final at Dreher High in Columbia.

The Red Devils (24-10), which came into the match ranked second in the classification, were on a whirlwind ride after winning their first Region 1-2A title in the program's 24-year existence three weeks ago. Last week, they ran through Ware Shoals, Pendleton and Crescent for their first Upper State crown.

No. 1 B-E (36-3) was just too much. Billy Williams (220 pounds), Malcolm Jones (120), Lan Hiers (126), Damion Johnson (132) and Player Long (160) scored pins for the Red Raiders, who beat Marion, Battery Creek and Aynor last weekend en route to its seventh consecutive Lower State title at Edisto High. Led by first-year coach Jake Stewart, the Red Raiders are the first team to win back-to-back titles in different classifications, having moved up from A to 2A this year.

Trailing 15-3, Liberty's Nick Weidman (106) grinded out a decision and Tristan Oglesby (113) won by pin, cutting the deficit to three points. Jones and Hiers came up with pins to halt the Red Devils' momentum.

Dakota Stewart won by pin at pounds and Garrett Whitmire earned a major decision for Liberty before B-E won the last three matches.

Liberty Ross And Jimmy Lovine Have Been "Spending Time Together": Source

Liberty Ross may have finally filed the divorce papers in her split from husband Rupert Sanders, but that doesn't mean she's going it alone.

The British model, 34, has recently been spotted out and about with music executive Jimmy Lovine, sparking rumors of a romance -- but a source close to Ross says that the two have simply been "spending time together" in the past couple of weeks.

"It is just getting to know each other better," the source told Us Weekly. "We'll see."

PHOTOS: Relive Rupert and Kristen's steamy fling

Lovine, 59, is a legend in the music industry, having co-founded Interscope Records and worked with a long list of bold-faced names, including Eminem and Lady Gaga.

On Friday, Feb. 8, the pair was snapped leaving an NYC hotel together in the morning, just two weeks after Ross officially filed for divorce from Sanders, 42. In the papers, Ross asked for joint custody of the couple's two children -- Skyla, 7, and Tennyson, 5, as well as spousal support and attorney's fees.

Sanders responded to Ross' request with his own documents, similarly asking for joint custody but not seeking either spousal support or attorney's fees.

"This was a long time coming," a source told Us of the divorce, explaining that Ross "was more than a little upset" by Sanders' relationship with his much-younger Snow White and the Huntsman star Kristen Stewart last year.

Liberty Ross gets 'LOVE' tattoo

Liberty Ross hinted that she still believes in love by getting the word temporarily tattooed on her wrist in capital letters this week

The model and actress - who recently filed for divorce from her director husband Rupert Sanders, asking for spousal support and joint custody of their children Sykla, seven, and Tennyson, five - opted to get a temporary tattoo of the word 'LOVE' on her wrist at New York Fashion Week.

A source told the New York Post's Page Six that the British star stopped by the Scoop NYC party in the Meatpacking District on Thursday night to support celebrity stylist Cher Coulter's denim collection for AG Jeans.

After chatting with actress Elizabeth Olsen, Liberty was invited to get a temporary inking and chose the word 'LOVE' in capital letters.

The 34-year-old model was devastated when her husband cheated on her with 22-year-old actress Kristen Stewart after they met on the movie 'Snow White and the Huntsman' but is now trying to move forward with her life.

A source previously said: 'The good thing about Liberty is that she's not upset anymore. She's had time to get over the initial shock and awe of it when it was exposed last year and the divorce was the nail in the coffin.'
