Virgin Media Inc. (VMED), the U.K. cable-TV provider being bought by Liberty Global Inc. (LBTYA), plans to make Web services such as Netflix a more integral part of its offering rather than fighting them, its chief executive officer said.
Our approach is to get every content asset you possibly can on the platform, CEO Neil Berkett said yesterday in an interview at the Cable Congress in London.
Liberty Global, the cable giant controlled by billionaire John Malone, is buying Virgin Media for $16 billion to expand in Europes biggest pay-TV market. Berkett is overseeing the merger while competing against larger rival British Sky Broadcasting Group Plc (BSY) as well as streaming services offered by Netflix Inc. (NFLX) and Amazon.coms Lovefilm.
Cable operators have an advantage as their relationship with content providers is highly complementary, he said. Still, streaming services have the potential to dilute offerings by the cable companies that dont work with them, he said.
Weve got a far greater chance as an industry by embracing over-the-top services, Berkett said. Its unlikely that youll see a U-turn and digression in terms of our strategy under Liberty Global.
Liberty Global CEO Mike Fries said yesterday at the conference that he expected Virgin Media to continue to use the TiVo Inc. (TIVO) set-top box in the coming years, though was unsure what would happen beyond that. Liberty Global has been introducing the competing Horizon box in Europe, starting in the Netherlands.
TiVo CEO Tom Rogers said in an interview today his company has a long time on the contract with Virgin Media.
Its really expensive to make a technology change of the sort we represent once its weaved into the heart of the software, he said at the Cable Congress today. We will continue to work with Virgin and look forward to working with Liberty Global.
About 1.3 million Virgin Media customers currently have the TiVo box, Berkett said yesterday, and the company is continuing to offer it.
TiVo is also in talks with a number of operators in Europe about adding its set-top box and software, Rogers said. There is room to grow with about 400 million subscribers in regions including western Europe and the U.S. that will decide whether to take on advanced TV services in future, he added.

Virgin Media to Embrace Online Rivals After Takeover by Liberty
Syrena Johnson never thought anyone evaluating scholarship applicants would even give her a second look. That all changed in the summer of 2011, though, when the New Orleans native received the first-ever Chefs Move! Culinary Scholarship.
The scholarship paid for room and board, a laptop and 13 months at the French Culinary Institute in New York City, where Johnson learned from some of the greatest chefs in the world, including John Besh.
"It sounded too good to be true," Johnson told a crowd at Underground 119 March 3.
Johnson, 22, owes the scholarship to the people at Liberty's Kitchen, she said, and she's paying every bit of it back. A non-profit organization, Liberty's Kitchen takes in at-risk youth in New Orleans, and puts them through a 12-to-15-week program that teaches them life skills and the ins and outs of running a restaurant. It also provides employment assistance after they graduate.
The educational process includes running a cafe, providing fresh, from-scratch lunches to 1,000 public-school children five days a week, catering events and in-class instruction. If participants haven't already earned a high-school diploma, the program provides tutoring to help them earn a GED.
In 2010, Johnson was one of those young people. She entered the Liberty's Kitchen Youth Development Program with some kitchen experience, and competed the program in just seven weeks. After graduation, Liberty's Kitchen hired Johnson to work on the school-lunch program. She was working there when Liberty's Kitchen directors pushed her to apply for the Chefs Move! Scholarship.
"I was just like, 'Nah--I couldn't possibly win that," Johnson said. "Everybody from Liberty's Kitchen was like, 'Come, Syrena, you really have to do this. You have a chance."
Johnson applied. She didn't really believe she had a chance until she made it to the second round of the selection process. One round and an interview with Besh later, Johnson had a scholarship to one of the best culinary schools in the country.
Now Johnson is back at Liberty's Kitchen as an instructor, providing the same education she received to other New Orleans' young people.
Though she is a success story of Liberty's Kitchen, she certainly isn't the only one. Liberty's Kitchen started in July 2009 with just two students. Since then, the school has served 200 students out of an applicant pool of more than 800.

LIBERTY, Va., March 5 (UPI) -- Liberty University in Virginia, founded in 1971 by Jerry Falwell as Lynchburg Baptist College, has become the largest private university in the country.
The university now has more than 74,000 students, almost 62,000 of them studying on line, The Washington Post reports. At the end of 2012, Liberty reported more than $1 billion in net assets, 10 times the amount in 2006.
Liberty grew fast under Falwell, the pastor of the Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg and one of the country's leading conservative evangelical leaders. But its growth has been explosive since his death in 2007.
Only 47 percent of its students get degrees within six years of enrolling, the Post said. The national average is 58 percent.
Jerry Falwell Jr., who now serves as chancellor and president, said the school strives to provide opportunity for people seeking college degrees.
"We believe that Liberty will redefine what is considered an academically prestigious university in the future," he said.
Liberty's loan default rate is below average, suggesting it has avoided piling its students with loads of debt.

At the Last Night of the 2004 Proms, Leonard Slatkin, then in his final year as the BBC Symphony #39;s Principal Conductor, introduced this rousing Sousa march. LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - Two Liberty University graduates will appear on a reality TV show on the Sportsman Channel this month.
The university says brothers David and Parker Slaybaugh of Colonial Heights competed in the network's "Top Outdoor Producer." The first episode will air at 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
Competing as Team Liberty, the Slaybaughs trekked into the Illinois woods in search of whitetail deer. Armed with a hunting bow and a video camera, the brothers were tested on both their hunting prowess and their creative camera work during a six-day competition featuring nine teams from across the country.
The 2011 Liberty graduates were the youngest team, the only pair of brothers and the only team sponsored by a university.

LYNCHBURG, Va. The small Baptist college that television preacher Jerry Falwell founded here in 1971 has capitalized on the online education boom to become an evangelical mega-university with global reach.
In the almost six years since Falwells death, Liberty University has doubled its student head count twice.
Total enrollment now exceeds 74,000, with nearly 62,000 working toward degrees online in fields such as psychology, business, education, criminal justice and, of course, religion. That makes Liberty the largest university in Virginia with more than double the number of students at No. 2 George Mason and the largest private, nonprofit university in the country. With a slogan of training champions for Christ, Liberty also is the nations largest university with a religious affiliation.
The surging enrollment for a bastion of Christian conservatism in the central Virginia foothills highlights the school as a market leader at the crossroads of religion and higher education. Liberty figured out how to recruit masses of students via the Internet years before elite universities began ballyhooed experiments with free online courses.
Turbocharged growth inevitably raises questions about quality, and Libertys academic reputation has not risen as fast as its enrollment. About 47 percent of its first-time, full-time students graduate within six years, federal data show, below the national average of 58 percent. Liberty officials say such statistics reflect an admissions policy geared more toward opportunity than exclusivity.
We believe that Liberty will redefine what is considered an academically prestigious university in the future, said Jerry Falwell Jr., the universitys chancellor and president. The school, he said, aims to be judged by how many students it educates and how well it educates them rather than how many it turns away.
Libertys expansion has yielded a river of money. The university ended 2012 with more than $1billion in net assets for the first time, counting cash, property, investments and other holdings. That is 10 times what the school had in 2006, putting Liberty in the same financial league as universities such as Pepperdine, Georgetown and Tulane.
Flush with cash, Liberty is building a huge, $50million library, replacing old dormitories and angling to place its Flames football team in a conference eligible for NCAA bowl games.
Its grown from being a small Bible school towards the goal of being a full-service university, Falwell said in an interview. He said he aims to carry out his fathers vision: To create for evangelical Christians what Notre Dame is for Catholics and Brigham Young is for Mormons.
Falwell, 50, acknowledged that Libertys image continues to be influenced by the legacy of his late fathers political activism. The elder Falwell, who died in May 2007, was a polarizing figure beloved on the right, despised on the left.

NOTE NOTE super please tell people to read the description if uv read this bc this is mucho importante leave a comment like #39; #39;i read the description, and i noted that! #39; #39; lol or something would b helpful beacause... from the day you get your travel brief (2-3 days before boot camp graduation) they will tell you your family cannot meet you at the airport [or they strongly advise against it]) but that #39;s not true. they tell you your family cannot bring ur cell phone to the airport and that you can #39;t leave with ur family after u get to the airport. they tell u traffic is awful and that you should stay in the airport and wait for your flight this isn #39;t entirely true yes mind the traffic and dont miss ur flight, but my flight wasn #39;t leaving until 1900 on saturday and i got there at 0200 in the morning. i wasn #39;t staying in no airport with my family for 17 hours or whatever else so just note that they will tell u your family can #39;t come to airport and that you can #39;t leave the airport, they #39;ve been saying this for years, but you always can. you are able. the guy in the airport even briefs you and says ur allowed to go. they just try n press u so you wont miss ur flight u dig? ok thanks byeeee
