West Liberty screens pro-gas drilling film Monday

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. (AP) - West Liberty University is hosting a free public screening of the documentary "FrackNation," a film targeting environmental activists concerned about natural gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing.

The screening is 6 p.m. Monday at the Highlands Center. It's sponsored by the school's Center for Economic Philosophy and will be followed by a discussion.

The film follows co-director Phelim McAleer as he challenges environmentalists and they debate the facts as both sides see them.

McAleer claims mainstream media haven't told the full story about drilling and fracking in Appalachia, or focused on people who support it.

"FrackNation" was directed by McAleer, his wife and a colleague, and funded through Kickstarter.

It's at least the third film focused on gas drilling, joining the HBO documentary "Gasland" and the Matt Damon movie "Promised Land."

Liberty Wins, Virginia Tech Loses on the Diamond

From Liberty athletics:

LYNCHBURG, Va. After Duke scored three runs in the top of the eighth to take a 3-2 lead, the Liberty Flames answered with two in the bottom of the inning for a 4-3 victory over the Blue Devils, Sunday afternoon at the Liberty Baseball Stadium.

Liberty left fielder Nick Lacik used a 12-pitch at bat to draw a walk to open the home half of the eighth and moved to second on a single through the left side of the infield by center fielder Ryan Cordell. Two batters later, Duke first baseman Chris Marconcini's errant throw in an attempt to retire Cordell at second went into the outfield, allowing Lacik to score and tie the game at 3-3.

Shortstop Dalton Britt was then intentionally walked to load the bases with Flames. Third baseman Jake Kimble followed with a well-executed squeeze play to plate Cordell and give Liberty what proved to be the final score of 4-3.

The Flames move to 27-21 on the season. Liberty has won five out of its last six games. Duke falls to 25-22. It was the first meeting between the two schools on the diamond since 2010.

After a scoreless first four innings, the Flames plated two runs in the fifth for a 2-0 advantage. Outfielder Ashton Perritt beat out an infield single and second baseman Bryan Anderud singled to begin the frame. Catcher Trey Wimmer followed with a single to score Perritt and give Liberty a 1-0 lead. The next batter, Danny Grauer, then lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Aanderud for a 2-0 edge.

Meanwhile, Liberty right-handers Josh Richardson and Brooks Roy kept the Blue Devils in check, combining to allowed only four hits through the first seven innings.

However, in the top of the eighth, Duke broke through, benefiting from a Liberty error, for three runs. After Roy walked second baseman Anthony Perez to lead off the inning, Perritt came on to pitch for the Flames, promptly retiring the next two Blue Devils.

With two outs, Marconcini reached on a fielding error by Liberty's Britt to keep the frame alive. Designated hitter Aaron Cohn was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Center fielder Grant McCabe followed with a two-run single, knotting the game at 2-2. McCabe and pinch runner David Perkins then pulled off a double steal, scoring Perkins for a 3-2 advantage and setting up the Liberty eighth.

In the top of the ninth, Perritt retired the Blue Devils in order, sealing the 4-3 win.

Guinness has ended its 18-year association with the All-Ireland Hurling Championship but will remain a proud partner of the GAA.

A new deal with American company Liberty Insurance is expected to be announced in the coming weeks to add to the deals already in place with Etihad and Centra under in the multi-sponsor model adopted by the GAA.

Liberty Insurance took over the existing business remaining from the sale of Quinn Insurance and have invested heavily in marketing and advertising in the Irish market, including sponsoring The Late Late Show.

Liberty were mentioned as a possible sponsor of Cork GAA before the Rebels agreed a deal with Chill Insurance.

The GAA announced that Guinness will become proud partner to both the GAA and Croke Park Stadium, where they hold the pouring rights for the venues bars and restaurants.

Commenting on the new agreement, GAA commercial and stadium director Peter McKenna said: There is no doubt that the GAA has benefited enormously from the marketing expertise of one of the worlds most creative companies. We appreciate that all sponsorship has a natural time span, and we are pleased to be taking our association with Guinness in a new direction.

The end to the Guinness sponsorship of the All-Ireland Hurling Championship comes against the backdrop of a proposed ban on drinks companies sponsoring sporting events.

STARNES: Religious liberty under threat in military, admiral says

By Todd Starnes

A high-ranking Coast Guard official said at a National Day of Prayer gathering that religious liberty in the U.S. military is being threatened and that service members are being told to hide their faith in Christ, according to a videotape obtained by Fox News.

As one general so aptly put it they expect us to check our religion in at the door dont bring that here, Rear Admiral William Lee told a National Day of Prayer gathering. Leaders like myself are feeling the constraints of rules and regulations and guidance issued by lawyers that put us in a tighter and tighter box regarding our constitutional right to express our religious faith.

The crowd of religious leaders and lawmakers cheered for nearly a minute when Lee vowed to defy any attempt to curtail religious liberty within the Armed Forces.

I am coming out today to tell you I am not going to run from my religious beliefs, from my right under the Constitution to tell a young man there is hope, he declared in remarks first reported by World Magazine.

Lee told the audience he had set aside his prepared remarks and instead chose to speak from the heart about the challenges facing Christian service members.

The problem that men and women like me face in uniform who are in senior leadership positions is that the higher you are the more vulnerable you are to being taken down, he said. You get in the crosshairs of those people who lay in wait outside the gate waiting to take us to task for expressing our faith.

In recent days, the Pentagon has been accused of infringing on the religious liberty of Christian service members.

Lt. Cmdr. Nate Christensen said in a statement the Department of Defense has never and will never single out a particular religious group for persecution or prosecution.

For Liberty players, it's more than just volleyball

They're the three Vs of Liberty Hurricanes volleyball: Virtue, Valor and Victory. Each player receives a five-page "code of honor" detailing the meaning of the three Vs and their relevance. Every player gets an 'Ammary's Army' T-shirt with a military chevron of the three Vs.

And, during a "cult-like" meeting at their coach's home, each player signs an oath attached to the code of honor that they "strive to uphold the three Vs in all aspects of life."

Liberty coach Neiad Ammary is focusing on more than digs, passes and spikes during practices at his alma mater. With an assist from his girlfriend, Julie Sterrett, the leadership education director at Lehigh University, Ammary is teaching his Hurricanes about leadership development and it isn't a crash course, either.

The Liberty players major in it.

"I've been doing a lot of this stuff for the nine years I've been the coach," Ammary said, "but it's been intensified by some of the materials and curriculum made available by Julie. It's information and it's experiences that can transform the students personally and socially off the court, and also make them more competitive and successful as athletes on the court."

The coach, who at 29 years old enjoyed an outstanding volleyball career at Liberty High, the University of Delaware and still competes nationally, estimates his players dedicate more than 100 hours in the offseason to the leadership development program.

Seniors Dan Bucchin, Zach Gallagher, Adam Hann, Johnson Hypolite and Ryan Holzer, and juniors Gilberto Figueroa and Steven Hughes have gone all-in with Ammary's expectations. They read literature, write essays and discuss in open forums information that relates to self-improvement and team-building. They also take camping and hiking trips together, and train under adverse conditions.

"We meet each Friday after school in the offseason. While others are starting their weekends, we're in the classroom learning about character and leadership and how it relates to life in general," Ammary said.

"I think our training definitely carries over onto the court. One thing I've seen is our players respond to adversity very well. For example, in our [five-set] win over Emmaus, each time we lost a set we came back to win the next one. We fell behind again in the fifth set but we rallied again to take the match.

"We don't really judge or success on wins and losses. We judge it on how well we respond to adversity."

Laimbeer: Liberty will be fun to watch in 2013

NEW YORK (AP) -- Days before the New York Liberty open their first training camp under Bill Laimbeer, the former NBA player said he was looking forward to getting the players on the court and vowed the team will be more fun to watch this year.

''Obviously, going to training camp isn't fun,'' Laimbeer told The Associated Press. ''You got to work. I got a lot to put in. I'm going to do things a lot differently than they were (done) in the past. They got a lot to learn.''

Laimbeer was hired as coach and general manager in October to turn around a team that struggled to post a .500 record the last two years under John Whisenant. New York followed a 19-win campaign in 2011 with 19 losses last season, finishing fourth in the Eastern Conference both years and losing in the first round of the playoffs each time.

Enter Laimbeer, who returns to the WNBA after stepping down as coach and GM of the Detroit Shock early in the 2009 season to pursue opportunities in the NBA following a stretch in which they won three championships in six seasons.

''Last couple of years it's been like pulling teeth for this organization, both the fan base and some internally, watching the team play,'' he said. ''I (coach) a fast, more up-tempo game. Defense is a given, we'll be attacking. Rebounding on this team was horrible. I've shored that up in many ways.

''I guess it's going to be fun to watch and figure we're going to win our fair share of games.''

Laimbeer's hiring has energized the fan base of a franchise that reached the WNBA Finals four times in the league's first six years, but has not been back since losing to Los Angeles in its last appearance in 2002. Forgotten is the fierce rivalry Detroit and New York had over the years while meeting in the postseason three times. The Liberty won a first-round series in 2004, knocking out the then-defending champs on a buzzer-beater in the decisive Game 3, but then came up short in hard-fought three-game series in the first round in 2007 and the conference semifinals in 2008 during the Shock's run to their last title.

''That was then, this is now,'' Laimbeer said. ''Whenever I go talk to people, the consistent theme is 'Oh I really hated you, but now we're really glad you're here.' The same thing when I was a player, after the fact. There's an animosity to some degree, but the respect factor is there as well.''

Laimbeer has immediately put his stamp on the Liberty, signing free agents Katie Smith and Cheryl Ford and hiring assistant coaches Taj McWilliams-Franklin and Barbara Farris. He coached all four in Detroit, though McWilliams-Franklin (2010) and Farris (2006-07) also played for the Liberty.

And considering New York already had former Detroit players Plenette Pierson and Kara Braxton on the roster the last couple of years - and trainer Laura Ramus since last season - there's an undeniable Shock flavor on the Liberty.
