NHTSA asks for Liberty, Grand Cherokee recall. Jeep says ‘no.’

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration asked Jeep to recall 2.7 million vehicles due to a potentially dangerous design issue in some Grand Cherokee and Liberty models. But Jeep pushed back saying the risk of an incident was too small. That isn't sitting well with consumers, according to a new survey.

Last week,Jeep did something very, very unusual: when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration asked the automaker to recall 2.7 million vehicles due to a potentially dangerous design issue, Jeep said "No".

According to one market research firm, that refusal isn't playing too well in Peoria -- or anywhere else that Jeep customers live.

GAS TANK TROUBLE

NHTSA claims that the1993-2004 Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Liberty are unsafe because their fuel tanks are located behind the rear axle -- a serious problem that has resulted in fuel leaks and firesin other vehicles like the Ford Pinto. The Grand Cherokee might be particularly at risk due to its ride height, which makes it easier for small cars and other vehicles to reach and rupture the tank during collisions.

According to NHSTA, the design flaw could be responsible for up to 44 deaths in the Grand Cherokee and another seven in the Liberty.

Jeep doesn't necessarily dispute the death claims, but insists that the reported fires aren't unusual. In a statement, Jeep said, "Our analysis shows the incidents, which are the focus of [NHTSA's] request, occur less than once for every million years of vehicle operation.... This rate is similar to comparable vehicles produced and sold during the time in question."

Homeland Resources Provides Exploration Update at Liberty Ridge Project in Oklahoma

ALBUQUERQUE, NM--(Marketwired - Jun 14, 2013) - Homeland Resources Ltd. A second rig would allow the spudding of Phase-1 well #3 at the end of the month or in early July. The initial exploration target of the eight well Phase-1 program was recently drilled to a total projected depth of approximately 5,650 feet targeting multiple potential hydrocarbon pay zones. The initial well encountered several of the potential pay zone horizons as projected by historic production in the region and proprietary 3D seismic, but it was determined by the operating partner that the well was non-commercial and would be plugged and abandoned. The Company remains extremely positive about the near and long term potential of the Liberty Ridge project, our proprietary 3D seismic database, and our operating partner's outstanding exploration track record in the area.

The Liberty Ridge project is a multi-well multi-phase exploration drill program currently being conducted by Homeland and it partners. Cappie Pondexter got hot and the Sun set into another early-season WNBA defeat. Scoring 18 of her game-high 20 points in the second half, Pondexter led New York from an 11-point third quarter deficit Friday night as it rallied past the Connecticut Sun 78-68 in front of 5,845 observers at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Leilani Mitchell came off the bench to add 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Liberty (4-2). Kara Braxton added 11 points and 13 rebounds, while 39-year old Katie Smith contributed 10 points. Allison Hightower paced the Sun with 17 points and five assists, while Kara Lawson added 16 points, six rebounds and six assists. But Connecticut (2-4) wasn't able to build on its 73-61 win Wednesday night over WNBA champion Indiana. Things looked promising for the Sun early as they carved out a 33-24 halftime lead, largely because of their defense. New York missed 24 of its first 29 shots until late in the first half. But once Pondexter found the range, Connecticut's inability to consistently hit its shots became a huge issue. The Sun finished the night 26-of-75 from the field, with All-Star center Tina Charles suffering through a miserable 3-of-17 evening and playing just 25 minutes due to foul trouble. Pondexter capped a 14-point third quarter with a buzzer-beating jumper that gave the Liberty a 56-55 lead. She then sank two more jumpers as New York established a 63-55 advantage less than a minute into the fourth quarter. Connecticut pulled within 72-68 with 2:07 left, but Smith's layup with 1:06 remaining made it a six-point game. Mitchell sank four straight free throws in the last 44 seconds to wrap it up.

Liberty Township Tea Party remains in limbo

The Liberty Township Tea Party is in a state of limbo.

It was one of dozens of organizations around the country that was singled out by the Internal Revenue Service because of its name. The conservative political group applied for tax-exempt status with the IRS in May of 2010, and after more than three years, its application hasnt been approved or denied.

Im shocked, Im disappointed and angry, said Susan McLaughlin, a member of the Liberty Township Tea Party. Pissed off is the other word out there because it shouldnt happen this way in America.

McLaughlin was one of several Tea Party members from around the United States who flew to Washington D.C. on May 22 to speak out about the scandal that is engulfing the IRS. Agency officials came under fire after they admitted to targeting some conservative groups.

Acting IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel testified before the House Appropriations Committee subcommittee on financial services and general government on IRS operations funding on June 3. According to his written testimony, he said, Unfortunately that trust has been broken as a result of the unacceptable conduct uncovered in the recent report by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.

Werfel promised taxpayers he will restore trust.

In my first few days at the IRS, I have initiated a comprehensive review of the agency and have taken immediate actions to address the significant and alarming problems identified in the Inspector Generals report regarding the 501c(4) application process, he said.

The Liberty Township Tea Party, formed in the summer of 2009, endured closer scrutiny when it applied and was required to furnish unnecessary information on its application because it had Tea Party in its name, McLaughlin said. Members coveted a 501c(3) status because that meant they could have a checkbook so they could have a bank account and they also wanted liability insurance so they can operate like a non-profit business.

It brings a level of professionalism to your operation, McLaughlin said. Your members and the people who contribute when you pass the hat to put the money in know that theres a CPA thats accounting for the money and not going to anybodys pocket and not going to anybodys checking account. And then that money is used to operate and rent the auditorium, pay for things that we do.
