Liberty Media Upped to Outperform

We upgraded our recommendation on Liberty Media Corp. (LMCA) to Outperform based on strong financial results for the second quarter of 2013. Although total revenue was mostly in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate, earnings per share significantly outpaced the same. Liberty Media currently has a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).

Why the Upgrade?

Liberty Media is steadily restructuring its business model in its aim to control several subscription-based companies. Strong performance in the said quarter was primarily driven by the contribution from the companys newly acquired controlling stake of SIRIUS XM Radio Inc. (SIRI). Management is pursuing a systematic share buyback program to enhance shareholders wealth. Moreover, the spin-off of the Starz segment as a separate entity helped Liberty Media to improve its financial position.

Recently, Liberty Media entered into the cable TV market after acquiring 27.3% stake of Charter Communications Inc. (CHTR), the fourth largest pay-TV operator in the U.S. Liberty Media is striving to enable Charter Communications acquisition of a major cable TV operator in the U.S. Earlier this year, Charter Communications declared its plans to acquire Cablevision Systems Corp.s (CVC) western U.S. cable systems, Optimum West, for around $1.6 billion in cash.

On Jun 25, 2012, the U.S. District Court in Manhattan awarded nearly $1 billion to Liberty Media as it found the French entertainment firm, Vivendi, guilty of not disclosing its true financial position to Liberty Media in 2001 in an equity swap deal. In 2001, Vivendi bought USA Network for over $10.3 billion.

As part of the deal, Vivendi gave Liberty Media 32 million treasury shares and an additional 5.2 million shares for its holding in a European cable joint venture with Vivendi. Vivendi later appealed against the ruling. However, in Jan 2013, the District Court in Manhattan once again gave the order in favor of Liberty Media and rejected Vivendis petition.

O'Neill edges Liberty in 'C' showdown

Denies two-point conversion attempt on final drive of game

Times Herald-Record

Published: 2:00 AM - 09/15/13

The showdown, Liberty vs. James I. O'Neill, took parts of two days to finish and provided plenty of twists, turns and excitement right down to the final seconds.

In a rematch of last year's Class C championship, O'Neill outlasted host Liberty 21-20 on Saturday. Down a point, Liberty was stopped on a two-point conversion with 18 seconds remaining. The game was postponed on Thursday late in the third quarter due to thunderstorms with O'Neill (2-0) leading 13-6.

"It was a relief to win," O'Neill coach Anthony Finochio said. "It was a roller coaster. We were up, we were down. It was like a prize fight."

Liberty took a 14-13 lead over the two-time defending Class C champion on a 52-yard run by Quinn Jackson with 8 minutes remaining in the game. Jackson added the two-point conversion on a run. O'Neill took the lead with just 50 seconds left on a 20-yard touchdown run by Keegan West and a two-point conversion run by Malik Chambers, who finished with 207 all-purpose yards and a touchdown. West rushed for two touchdowns and passed for 117 and a score.

On the final drive of the game, Liberty (1-1) started at its own 27-yard line. Jackson hit Jericho Male for a 68-yard score to cut O'Neill's lead to 21-20. Liberty went for the two-point conversion and O'Neill was called for offsides, moving the ball from the 3 to the 11/2-yard line.

Going for the dramatic win, Jackson was stopped on the two-point conversion attempt by O'Neill linebacker Matt Newlin. Liberty coach John Wilhelm said the team does not have a kicker. O'Neill beat Liberty 35-14 in last year's Class C championship. Jackson had 224 all-purpose yards and Shakree Gibson rushed for 115 yards.

"It was an insane game," Jackson said. "It was one of the most exciting games I've ever been a part of. To lose like that, it was rough, definitely. But we never gave up and I'm proud of my team."

Liberty 38, Morgan State 10

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Desmond Rice ran for three touchdowns and Clifton Richardson rushed for two more as Liberty routed Morgan State 38-10 in a non-conference game at Williams Stadium on Saturday night. The Flames (2-1), who entered the game averaging just 77.5 rushing yards per game and 2.3 yards per carry, took to the ground early and often against the Bears (0-3). Rice ran for 97 yards on nine carries and Richardson added 86 yards on 14 attempts. Liberty was playing for the third straight game without presumed starting tailback Aldreakis Allen, a 1,000-yard back a year ago who has missed two games due to suspension and another due to injury. The Flames rushed for 330 yards on an easy night for quarterback Josh Woodrum, who went 9-for-15 for 101 yards. Liberty held Morgan State, which has lost its last nine games, to 171 yards of total offense. After playing three quarterbacks last week at Morgan State, the Bears started freshman Moses Skillon, and he proved to be the only one capable of moving the ball. Morgan State finished with 28 passing yards, but Skillon ran 16 times for 90 yards. Liberty marched down the field with ease on its first drive, a six-play, 66-yard possession culminating in Rice's 14-yard touchdown run behind a huge block from fullback Nicky Fualaau that gave the Flames a 7-0 lead. The drive came after Liberty's defense forced a three-and-out on the Bears' first possession. The Flames moved with similar ease on their second possession. Woodrum hit Fualaau on a seam route for a 19-yard gain to move into the Morgan State red zone, and Richardson capped the 10-play, 71-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown run that made it 14-0 Flames. Morgan State got on the board with a 35-yard Chris Moller field goal with 12:04 left in the first half, but any momentum was lost when the Flames drove 96 yards in 11 plays for another touchdown, this one a 9-yard Rice run for a 21-3 lead. Richardson scored on a 3-yard TD run 16 seconds before halftime to make it 28-3 Flames. Rice's 20-yard TD run in the third quarter pushed the lead to 35-3. Morgan State finally got into the end zone with 2:39 left on a 4-yard touchdown run by Herb Walker Jr. that cut the lead to 38-10. NOTES: Morgan State's nine-game losing streak is its longest since the Bears dropped its last five games in 2000 and first four in 2001. ... Morgan State hasn't won a non-conference road game against a Division I opponent since beating Towson 12-9 in 2009. ... Liberty scored on its first possession for just the third time in 14 games under head coach Turner Gill.

Liberty grinds down Morgan State with running game

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- After two disappointing weeks running the football, Liberty had a clear goal in mind for Saturday's matchup with Morgan State at Williams Stadium. "One of the big points going into the game was 200 yards rushing," Liberty offensive tackle Hunter Steward said. "No excuses if we didn't get it." The Flames nearly had that by halftime of their 38-10 rout of the Bears and finished the night was 330 yards on the ground. Desmond Rice scored three touchdowns and Clifton Richardson added two more. It was a big step forward for a team that had averaged 77.5 rushing yards and 2.3 yards per carry in the first two weeks of the season. "Pretty much every game, we have that premise, to be honest with you," Liberty coach Turner Gill said. "We maybe tried to emphasize it a little more. I thought our players responded well, and they maintained it throughout the game." The Flames (2-1) took to the ground early and often against the Bears (0-3). Rice ran for 97 yards on nine carries and Richardson added 86 yards on 14 attempts. Liberty was playing for the third straight game without presumed starting tailback Aldreakis Allen, a 1,000-yard back a year ago who has missed two games due to suspension and another due to injury. It made for an easy night for quarterback Josh Woodrum, who went 9-for-15 for 101 yards. "Every week, they've been getting better, and they did a good job with their perimeter game," Morgan State coach Donald Hill-Eley said. "They did a lot of speed sweeps that pretty much put the power game to the outside. They pretty much just attacked us on the edges." Liberty held Morgan State, which has lost its last nine games, to 171 yards of total offense. After playing three quarterbacks last week at Robert Morris, the Bears started freshman Moses Skillon, and he proved to be the only one capable of moving the ball. Morgan State finished with 28 passing yards, but Skillon ran 16 times for 90 yards. "We knew the quarterback runs would be available," Hill-Eley said. Skillon missed a series after taking a big hit from Liberty linebacker Nick Sigmon but returned and played most of the night. Skillon opened the year third on the Bears' QB depth chart and made his first appearance last Saturday. Hill-Eley wouldn't commit to him as a starter going forward. The Bears play FBS school Western Kentucky next Saturday, their fourth straight road game and second FBS opponent. "We're trying to get through these non-conference games so we can find those guys that we can hang our hats on," Hill-Eley said. "That's why you see such a variety of guys playing. We're going into every game to win. But with a new offense and new defense and new special teams, we're trying to use these four games that we've got away as a bit of a preseason." Liberty marched down the field with ease on its first drive, a six-play, 66-yard possession culminating in Rice's 14-yard touchdown run behind a huge block from fullback Nicky Fualaau that gave the Flames a 7-0 lead. Richardson scored on a 3-yard TD run 16 seconds before halftime to make it 28-3. Rice's 20-yard TD run in the third quarter pushed the lead to 35-3. Morgan State finally got into the end zone with 2:39 left on a 4-yard touchdown run by Herb Walker Jr. that cut the lead to 38-10.
