Liberty Center rolls to dual titles cross country titles

TIFFIN Liberty Center made a clean sweep of the Division III regional cross country titles on Saturday at Hedges Boyer Park.

The Tigers defending state champion girls team claimed a regional for the first time in three seasons before the boys came through and won the regional for the first time in school history.

Frankly, it was an all-around unforgettable day for the Tigers.

"It's the first boys regional championship in our school's history, so it's extra special today," said Tim Atkinson, who serves as coach for both teams.

The LC girls won by posting 47 points, edging a strong Coldwater team that ran second with 52. Minster finished third with 60, followed by St. Henry with 146 to clinch a team berth to the state championships along with the top 16 individual runners.

Liberty Center's Brittany Atkinson led the way for the Tigers, who placed four runners in the top 10. She crossed the finish line third with a time of 18:16.94, followed by teammate Paige Chamberlain in fourth at 19:19.35. Olivia Kundo ran sixth (19:24.76) and Jenna Vollmar was 10th (19:40.15). LC's fifth runner, Rachael Pinson, came in at 33rd (20:47.10).

Winning the regional championship is what the Tigers had hoped for.

"Coming into a regional and you score 47 points and you barely win the regional, that tells you the caliber of teams that are in this regional," Tim Atkinson said. "Coldwater and Minster have tremendous programs.

Liberty Property adapts, thrives

Chris Hepp, Inquirer Staff Writer Posted: Sunday, October 27, 2013, 2:02 AM

Willard G. Rouse III has been gone a decade, but his handiwork - Liberty Property Trust - continues to thrive.

Liberty Property's ongoing success stands as testament to Rouse's forward thinking, but also the mutability of clever corporations, which often must shift and remake themselves to keep ahead.

As Liberty Property is doing now under the leadership of William P. Hankowsky, who served his apprenticeship as president of the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corp. (Full disclosure: Hankowsky is part owner of The Inquirer.)

In a conference call last week to discuss Liberty Property's third quarter (funds from operations available to common shareholders were 57 cents per share, compared with 64 cents a year ago) Hankowsky explained where the company was going and why.

Once known for cutting-edge office parks, such as the Great Valley Corporate Center in Chester County, Liberty Property increasingly sees its future in industrial warehouse space.

"Over the last year or so, we've been thinking very much about Liberty Property's strategy for the next five years," Hankowsky said. "The conclusion is we want to be more industrial and less suburban office."

In fact, Hankowsky said Liberty Property's future was about two-thirds industrial and one-third office.

To that end, the company earlier this month spent $1.47 billion to buy the operating partnership of Cabot Industrial Value Fund III, which brings with it 177 properties and 23 million square feet of industrial space.

Liberty Hill edges Burnet in defensive struggle

After his teams victory Friday night, Liberty Hill football coach Jerry Vance could have given game balls to defensive end Chris Robinson and linebacker Jason Reeves. Or perhaps the coach might have opted to hand them out to all 11 of the Panthers defensive starters.

That was how impressive Liberty Hills defense was in a critical Class 8-3A clash against longtime rival Burnet. Nick Barrios and Hunter Lindsay both rushed for touchdowns, and the Panthers made those scores stand up in a 14-7 victory over the visiting Bulldogs.

It was Robinson and Reeves, though, who combined for the game-saving play. Burnet quarterback Derek Kiser, facing a fourth down-and-5 at Liberty Hills 10 with 55 seconds to play, saw his pass tipped by Robinson before Reeves made the interception in the shadow of the goal line.

Liberty Hill, 7-1 overall, remains the district leader with a 3-0 record.

I was just reading (Kisers) eyes on that last play, Reeves said. (Robinson) tipped it, and I just caught it.

The interception capped a remarkable night for Liberty Hill, which held the Bulldogs 30 points below their season average. Kiser, averaging 276 yards passing a game, finished with 191, most of them coming during a frantic fourth-quarter rally.

Liberty Hill had a seemingly comfortable 14-0 lead with 4:30 to play in the game, but Kiser led a two-play, 71-yard touchdown drive, capped by his scoring pass to Blayne Parisher that helped slice the Bulldogs deficit to 14-7.

After Burnet forced Liberty Hill to punt on its next possession, Kiser took control at his own 31 with 2 minutes to go. He then completed consecutive passes to Cody Jones, Parisher and Trenton Hafley.

Liberty Hill, though, would not let Kiser draw his team any closer. The Panthers stuffed the Bulldogs on four consecutive plays to win the game.

To hold Burnet to just seven points is an outstanding job by our defense, Vance said. I thought our secondary played well all night.

Liberty's closeness to bondholders could thwart Ziggo/UPC merger

* Ziggo/UPC merger could strain high yield indices

* LGI at pains to let investors class exposures separately

* Ziggo bond refinancing could create poison pill

By Robert Smith

LONDON, Oct 25 (IFR) - Liberty Global (LGI) has fired the opening shot in its takeover battle for Dutch cable business Ziggo, but the close relationship the U.S. cable giant has forged with bondholders could complicate any attempt to merge the target firm with its UPC operation.

"Liberty has one of the best relationships with bond investors in the European high yield market," said one investor, explaining that it has kept investors happy by allowing them to class its myriad cable businesses as separate exposures.

LGI businesses such as Unitymedia, Virgin Media and UPC all have separate credit pools, and so carry separate bond tickers. This benefits portfolio managers as they break down exposures on a ticker basis, allowing them to list the businesses separately.

Several European cable businesses switched to a single "LBTYA" ticker at one point, according to three market sources, but the company reverted back to separate tickers after complaints from bondholders.

Maintaining these separate tickers could pose a problem for LGI's next target acquisition, however.

Ziggo confirmed last week that it had rejected an initial offer from John Malone's LGI, which already holds a 28.5% stake in the company. This was in response to a report in German weekly Manager Magazin that LGI intends to merge Ziggo with its UPC operations in the Netherlands and Belgian firm Telenet.

Liberty Island to reopen Monday with Sandy scars and all

LIBERTY ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) - People came to Ellis Island for a new beginning, then last year Hurricane Sandy ripped it to shreds.

Ellis Island will reopen on Monday, but the National Park Service said it is still a work in progress.

It was the only path to freedom for millions of people from all over the world, then last year Ellis Island became a pathway of destruction.

Youll see a lot of signs of whats not there, but coming back, said John Warren of the National Park Service.

Right now, TV crews arent allowed on the island, and wont be until Monday. We asked and the National Parks Service answered. John Warren met us across the water at Liberty State Park island to tell us what visitors will see and what they wont see.

You will be able to see the first floor the baggage area, said Warren.

Youll be able to go on the second floor which is the great hall where 12 million immigrants went through the immigration process, added Warren.

During the hurricane, the water in New literally swept into Ellis Island.

The storm surge went directly through the ferry building, said Warren.

The park includes Ellis Island and Liberty Island. Since the Statue of Liberty has more visitors thats where officials said they focused their work first.
