Libertarian Gary Johnson: ‘this Independence Day feels different’

Former Libertarian presidential hopeful Gary Johnson hopes you have a nice picnic, parade or BBQ to attend, and a flag to wave. But he is not delivering the typical feel-good Fourth of July message this year.

This Independence Day feels a little different, he says. The news in recent weeks about the IRS using its force against certain targeted groups has reminded us that, absent vigilance on our part, the government will abuse the power it has accumulated. Likewise, as we learn more about the massive surveillance being conducted by the NSA and the FBI, a lot of Americans are today thinking and talking about the 4th Amendment and its intended protections against unreasonable searches.

Mr. Johnson continues, These revelations are bringing long-overdue attention to the liberties the Founding Fathers worked so hard and sacrificed so much to provide and protect. It is more than a little ironic that the Revolution was prompted, in part, by abusive tax policies and unreasonable searches - on the part of tyrants.

He concludes, Regardless of our plans for this Independence Day, I hope they include remembering that the battle for freedom never ends, and dedicating ourselves to restoring the liberty on which our great nation was founded. That is the most patriotic thing we can do on the Fourth, and in all the days that follow.

Mr. Johnson is speaking from a new political perch, incidentally - one geared to 2014 and 2016, of course. He is chairman of Our America Initiative, a grassroots group centered on smaller government and a frugal mindset. His fellow board members include Barry Goldwater Jr., former independent presidential hopeful Buddy Roemer and Whole Foods co-founder John Mackey.

Our purpose is simple, yet vital, Mr. Johnson says. To redefine the liberty movement in America. We aim to restore liberty, responsibility and economic freedom as the true American values.

Libertarian Activists Celebrate Freedom With Water Gun Battle

A crowd of pro-Second Amendment libertarians reveled in their First Amendment rights Wednesday, shooting off water guns and posing for pictures near the Washington Monument under the watchful eye of a SWAT team.

The event was organized in large part through social media, and attendance was lower than anticipated. Austin Petersen, the event's primary organizer, showed no disappointment that "around 10" participants showed up and thanked a larger contingent of print and television reporters for attending.

Under overcast skies, the activists marched from near Arlington Cemetery in Virginia toward the National Mall. There were no arrests or confrontations with law enforcement, but some attendees speculated that a helicopter overhead was surveilling them.

Along the way activists picked up a few interested passersby, including a father and his two young sons who were originally headed to an event featuring anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan near the White House.

Most of the attendees traveled a short distance to participate at least one person arrived alone after seeing the "Toy Gun March" Facebookevent and were not affiliated with one particular activist organization; they included a "Captain America" look-alike carrying an enormous American flag and Gadsden Flag-toting friends.

Petersen led the festivities, which included face-painting, the presentation of donated toys to Toys for Tots and a Pop Tart-eating contest, designed to mock Maryland school officials forsuspendinga 7-year-old earlier this year for chewing the snack into what looked like a gun. An adult was deemed the most nimble nibbler and proudly posed for photos; he was presented with a frisbee.

Petersen, who runs the blog Libertarian Republic, repeatedly stressed that the event was about libertarian values, including private charity, the right to bear arms and the freedom of children to play with fake weapons. A few curious tourists accepted informational fliers.

Racing: Burkes believe race may have come too soon for Libertarian

THAT'S MY BHOY: Kevin Manning and Trading Leather come home to win the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at The Curragh on Saturday. Picture: Getty Images

The colt was having his fifth run in less then three months when trailing in eighth of nine behind Trading Leather in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.

Since making a winning debut at Pontefract in early April, the son of New Approach had shown himself to be a classy performer, winning the Dante Stakes at York before staying on strongly to take second place at Epsom four weeks ago.

"He's fine after the run. No ill-effects whatsoever. He's eaten up and is sound," said trainer Elaine Burke's husband and assistant, Karl.

"It was just one race too many too quickly, he's had five runs in three months for a big, raw horse. It just came too soon after his exertions in the Dante and the Derby.

"It was disappointing for everybody involved, but I'm sure the horse will come back and redeem himself after he's had a bit of a break."

Burke is confident Libertarian will bounce back for his new owners Godolphin.

"He's heading back to Spigot Lodge. He will be let down and have an easy week and then he'll probably be shipped down to Newmarket some time in the near future," he said.

"He's a very good horse and we hope he does really well for his new connections. We wish them well.

"I'm sure he'll turn that form round. He has beaten the Irish Derby winner [Trading Leather] in the Dante and he's beaten the second [Galileo Rock] in the Derby.

Sarah Palin’s ‘Libertarian Streak’ Doesn’t Impress Libertarian Party

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin speaks during the 2013 NRA Annual Meeting and Exhibits at the George R. Brown Convention Center on May 3, 2013, in Houston, Texas.

Former vice presidential candidate and Gov. Sarah Palin, R-Alaska,openly mulledleaving the Republican Party in a Saturday interview on Fox News, citing her "libertarian streak." The Libertarian Party, frequently a refuge for renegade Republicans, isn't sure that she would be a good fit and the Reform Party, too, says it has "zero interest" in Palin.

"[W]hile a few of Sarah Palin's views are aligned with those of the Libertarian Party, her pro-interventionist foreign policy, her support of the 2008 Republican-led bailouts, her loyal support of Big Government Republicans, her social conservative agenda and her lack of concrete backing for any serious downsizing of Big Government runs afoul of the Libertarian Party's goals and most Libertarians' views," the Libertarian Party's executive director, Carla Howell, told U.S. News.

Palin could conceivably find a home in the Constitution or Reform parties - but the Reform Party, which had its heyday in the 1990s, is entirely uninterested.

"The Reform Party would probably have zero interest in Sarah Palin," Reform Party Chairman David Collison told U.S. News. "The primary reason is that we are not really as closely aligned with the tea party as people would think."

Collison said his party aspires to be viewed as centrist, and embraces activists affiliated with the Occupy Wall Street movement. "Palin would basically torpedo that," he said.

U.S. News was unable to reach a representative of the Constitution Party - a generally right-leaning party that in 2012 nominated former Virginia Rep. Virgil Goode, a Democratic-turned-Republican congressman, as its presidential candidate.

Over the weekend, Palin responded to a question about whether she would consider starting a new "Freedom Party" with radio host Mark Levin.

Derby runner-up Libertarian to get revenge over Ruler Of The World in Irish Derby at the Curragh

With the first three home in Epsoms Investec Derby all lining up again, it is a chance to get a second look at the Classic generation, this time on a galloping track that focuses on stamina rather more than agility and precocity.

Epsom winner Ruler Of The Worlds relative inexperience was outweighed by the brilliant ride he received that day from Ryan Moore, but the Irish Derby winner is likely to be the colt who has done best since that last run on June 1 and has come on again.

It is amazing what a difference four weeks in the middle of summer can make to a high-class three-year-old, and Ruler Of The World may have progressed as much or even more than either Libertarian or Galileo Rock, which would give him an excellent chance of becoming the 17th horse to complete the Anglo-Irish Derby double.

But Libertarian could well be the one in the field who is most suited by the Curragh.

He was all at sea on the adverse camber at Epsom, yet he flew late to snatch second place on the line, just 1 lengths behind Ruler Of The World.

On a track which is much more likely to suit his galloping style, the New Approach colt should be in his element and I select him to beat Ruler Of The World.

Sugar Boy, the winner of the Sandown Classic Trial in April, has solid place claims, though the tough Trading Leather might give him a run for third spot.
