Anti-war liberals can vote Libertarian

WASHINGTON – In the violent wake of President Obama’s military surge in Afghanistan, and his failure to withdraw the U.S. military from Iraq, the Libertarian Party (LP) says anti-war liberals can vote Libertarian with a clear conscience. Sadly, President Obama is spending an even larger percentage of America’s money on the military than George W. [...]

ILLINOIS: Mark Kirk clearly won the debate

Only responsible choice for Senate

By Jeff Wartman

Mark Kirk and Alexi Giannoulias finished their national televised debate on Meet the Press Sunday morning. The differences were startling, and only one conclusion can be made: Mark Kirk is the only responsible choice for the United States Senate. Let’s recap:

The candidates were each asked to name two issues where they disagree with their own party’s platform. Mark Kirk, being an independent voice for citizens, rightfully named supporting stem cell research and SCHIP, the children’s healthcare program. Alexi Giannoulias was completely unable to name a single issue where he disagrees with the Democrat platform – instead incompetently naming TARP, which was a Republican program. If Alexi is so ignorant and uninformed of simple policy, he is not qualified to be a United States Senator.

Even more amusing was the roundtable after the debate. Joe Klein, a Time columnist who often writes favorably towards Democrats — actually laughed and expressed shock that Alexi Giannoulias actually used the line “I did not know the extent of their criminal activity” when attempting to explain why, as Chief Loan Officer at Broadway Bank, he repeatedly gave loans to convicted felons and known mobsters — basically acknowledging that he knew they were criminals, he just didn’t know the extent of your criminal activities. Klein’s shock that a politician would actually make that statement says a lot about Alexi Giannoulias and the extent of his financial dealings with mobsters and felons.

The debate can be easily summed up: Mark Kirk gave real solutions for economic growth and creating jobs – creating tax incentives for hiring and ensuring a healthy business climate via ensuring availability of capital for small businesses, while Alexi Giannoulias repeated tired talking points.

Mark Kirk is the exact type of Republican we need in the Senate — fiscally responsible and socially moderate.

The conclusion is easy: Mark Kirk is the only responsible choice for U.S. Senate.

MONTANA: Republican says he won’t debate unless the Libertarian is included

From Eric Dondero:

This is a strange twist. Typically, Republicans are concerned that Libertarian candidates will take votes away from them, and tend to oppose their inclusion in debates. While Democrats do the same for Green Party candidates.

But not in Montana. Longtime Republican incumbent Congressman Denny Rehberg is telling MT media that it's a no go, unless perrenial Libertarian candidate for Congress Mike Fellows is included.

From the Missoulian.com "Rehberg insists all parties participate in debates; some in media disagree" Oct. 9:

Another newspaper tried but failed to schedule a debate between just Rehberg and McDonald, on grounds that Fellows wasn't campaigning in its readership area.

Rehberg has refused to debate McDonald unless Fellows is included.

Some news organizations in the past have chosen not to invite third-party, or fourth-party, candidates to their debates. It's an attempt to focus the debate on the Republican and Democratic candidates who likely will draw more than 90 percent of the votes.

Rehberg's campaign manager Evan Wilson condemned this practice.

"As far as some in the media trying to exclude candidates from the debates, Denny thinks that is just plain wrong," Wilson said. "The media shouldn't get to pick and choose which candidates the public gets to hear from."

Note - Fellows also happens to be State Chairman of the Libertarian Party.

Carl Paladino not fond of a certain Libertarian candidate

LR EXCLUSIVE

From Eric Dondero:

Libertarian Republican consultant and friend of this website Roger Stone of New York City, relayed to us that Republican nominee Carl Paladino doesn't think too highly of Libertarian nominee for Governor Warren Redlich. Last week at a local event, one tea party guy suggested Paladino suspend his campaign and endorse the Libertarian Party candidate for Governor Warren Redlich.

Paladino looked him in the eye and said "I'd rather drink my own piss"

Note - Redlich is an attorney and local town councilman in upstate NY.

Kristin Davis invited to participate in NY Gov’s debate

Libertarian and former Manhattan Madam Kristin Davis will be a participant in the upcoming debate for New York Governor.

From the NY Times "Cuomo and Paladino to Debate at Hofstra, With 5 Other Candidates" Oct. 7:

Andrew M. Cuomo and Carl P. Paladino will debate after all — but they won’t be alone.

Paladino Tries to Reset His Campaign for Governor (October 8, 2010) Mr. Cuomo, the Democratic nominee for governor, and Mr. Paladino, his Republican opponent, each announced on Thursday that he had accepted an invitation to a debate on Oct. 18 at Hofstra University.

The debate will also include five other candidates for governor who are on the ballot next month, including Kristin Davis, the former madam running on the line of the Anti-Prohibition Party, and Charles Barron, the Brooklyn city councilman running on the Freedom Party line.

The others are Howie Hawkins, on the Green Party line; Warren Redlich, the Libertarian Party candidate; and Jimmy McMillan...

Davis's campaign in managed by libertarian Republican consultant Roger Stone.

Libertarian Republican linked by NY Times, profile on Pamela Geller

From Eric Dondero:

The NY Times ran an extensive piece on Ayn Randian Pamela Geller of Atlas Shrugs blog on Sunday in the NY/Region section. The piece was titled, "Outrage and Outrageous." It talked of her rise from obscure rightwing blogger to cable TV News fame. And of course, delved deeply into her most recent activities leading the opposition to the Ground Zero Mosque. In the 16th paragraph Libertarian Republican even got a link. In the following excerpted paragraph at "television program," they linked to our brief news item ad commentary from May about her appearance on Fox about the GZ Mosque.

Two days later, Ms. Geller invited readers to protest the “9/11 monster mosque being built on hallowed ground zero,” in a post that was among the first to spread the misimpressions that the project was at the World Trade Center site and would solely house a prayer space. The next week, The New York Post took up the cause (“Mosque Madness at Ground Zero”). Fox News booked Ms. Geller on Mike Huckabee’s television program. Sean Hannity hosted her on the radio.

Interestingly, Pamela did not like the piece, calling it "an extraordinarily nasty and fallacious piece on me." But the Times did publish an absolutely gorgeous photo of her.

Libertarian Party’s 1980 V.P. candidate makes big contribution to Republican Governors

America's "libertarian billionaire"

Ben Smith over at Politico has reported that David Koch, 1980 Libertarian Party Vice-Presidential candidate, has participated in a huge donation to the Republican Governors Association. News Corp, parent company of both Fox News and the NY Daily News, gave the RGA $1 million. According to the spokesman for the group Jack Horner, "News Corporation believes in the power of free markets, and the RGA’s pro-business agenda."

From Politico:

The $1 million contribution this June 24 was first reported by Bloomberg and appears on the RGA's July 15 filing with the Internal Revenue Service.

The group's other seven-figure donor is the libertarian billionaire David Koch.

Koch a Libertarian Party activist through the 1970s, ran with Ed Clark on the 1980 ticket. Together they appeared on all 50 state ballots and received 922,000 votes (1.1%), the largest vote total ever for the Libertarian Party.

Did Sharron Angle’s taunting prompt Reid to oppose GZ Mosque?

From Eric Dondero:

Saturday morning Sharron Angle released this statement, (via Plumline, WaPo):

President Obama has once again ignored the wishes of the American people, this time at the expense of victims of 9/11 and their families. They have said overwhelmingly that the location of this mosque is an affront to the memories of their loved ones who were murdered by Islamic extremists on 9/11. Their wishes should be respected.

As the Majority Leader, Harry Reid is usually President Obama's mouthpiece in the U.S. Senate, and yet he remains silent on this issue. Reid has a responsibility to stand up and say no to the mosque at Ground Zero or once again side with President Obama---this time against the families of 9/11 victims. America is waiting.

The next day, in a released statement the Majority Leader stunned the mainstream media world with a strong rebuke of Obama. Reid said that even though Muslims have the right to build the Mosque, "it should be built elsewhere."

And then there's this recent poll from KSVM NBC 3 out of Las Vegas:

Do you agree with these propsed plans for Ground Zero?

Yes - It is a positive example of how we can move forward from 9/11 (8.4%)

No - A mosque near ground zero is insensitive to 9/11 victims' families (88.8%)

Undecided (2.8%)

Kirsten Powers: Individualism Sucks

Says Community of "higher value" than the Individual

From Eric Dondero:

Fox News liberal commentator Kirsten Powers was interviewed by libertarian-conservative columnist Matt Lewis of the Daily Caller. On her personal religious views:

I also now see humanity as totally interconnected and am completely anti-individualism. It's sad that Americans believe that individualism is so great, because I really do believe we would be a better country if we held the concept of community as a higher value.

Calls fellow Alaskan Sara Palin the ultimate Individualist

Powers, a native Alaskan, went on to say that while she agrees with Sarah Palin on "almost nothing," she admitted that Palin is indeed the "quintessential Alaskan woman." Continuing:

There's a popular T-shirt line in that says, "Alaskan Women Kick Ass," which pretty much sums up how Alaskans view their women. Alaskans are very independent, self confident, nonconformist and anti-elitism... they fish, hunt, camp, ride snow machines. Alaska has a history of fierce frontier women and that legacy continues...

there has always been a sense that people who aren't from Alaska are kind of wussy. Alaskans believe they are special and different and "tougher"... I see this attitude emanate from her in terms of how she just dismissed the Beltway crowd and East Coast elites.

Editor's Note - I had the pleasure of meeting Matt Lewis back in the Spring at a Blogger's conference in Austin with Rick Perry and Andrew Breitbart.

Sarah Palin identifies herself as a "libertarian" Republican on Fox’s Napolitano

A "libertarian streak" like most Alaskans

Excerpt (starts at approx. 7 minutes in):

JUDGE NAPOLITANO: Is Sarah Palin a social conservative or a libertarian?

SARAH PALIN: I along with most Alaskans, I think, have a libertarian streak in us that's quite healthy, and it helps guide our thinking and the way we live our life up here. Quite independent. We have a pioneer spirit... and um, a lot of that has to do with a libertarian leaning. But you know I'm proud to be registered in the Republican Party wanting to convert many Republicans... help them see the light, closer to the roots of the Republican Party, all about freedom, fighting to protect our Constitution, and again, a lot of that has to do with a philosophy of what perhaps a libertarian would be embracing too.

MASSACHUSETTS: Indy favorite Christy Mihos says Mike Stopa best for Congress over Jim McGovern

LR EXCLUSIVE!

From Eric Dondero:

Breaking news out of Massachusetts. Libertarian Republican has the exclusive.

The former Independent candidate for Governor, and briefly insurgent Republican primary candidate, Christy Mihos, expresses his support for libertarian Republican Mike Stopa for Congress.

Stopa is a physicist at Havard; virtually the only "free market" voice at the university. He is a Pro-Defense libertarian.

Stopa is challenging entrenched incumbent and ultra-liberal Rep. Jim McGovern, who some have cited as "more vulnerable" this cycle.

Rocket Scientist emerges in Republican Primary – Arizona CD 7

“I love living in the West. I love the diverse mixture of cultures and the frontier spirit that seems to exist in all the people of the west.”

Ruth McClung is emerging from the pack of 4, as the leading Republican to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva in November. She has raised $60,000 so far, much more than her nearest Republican rival. Arizona CD-7 is overwhelmingly Democrat with a two-to-one Dem to GOP voter registration advantage.

From the Arizona Daily Star, Aug. 9:

The 28-year-old McClung, who is a rocket scientist dealing with guidance navigation, said she decided to run in 2009 when she became increasingly frustrated with what she calls Washington's "out-of-control spending." McClung, who considers herself a member of the tea-party movement, said she wouldn't have supported the stimulus package.

She said reining in spending would be her No. 1 priority.

McClung has racked up most of the major endorsements, including the Arizona Republic.

She's a devout Christian, married to husband Michael. She's a rock climber, hiker and backpacker.

On National Defense:

I will continue to fight the war on terrorism. In spite of what my opponent and the President want to call it, there are still a large number of terrorists in the world who have declared war on us...

Fair Enough…

I spent last week campaigning at the Mooreland Fair. I’ve been attending the fair for 58 years. I don’t think I ever attended one that was as hot as this one. Mooreland isn’t a very big town, but they put on a heck of a fair every year. It’s kind of a [...]

Davis files 22,000 signatures for her run for New York Governor

15,000 required to qualify for the Ballot

Kristin Davis, the ex-Madam who supplied call-girls for Eliot Spitzer when he was both Attorney General and Governor filed 22,000 voter signatures to secure a place on the ballot as an independent candidate for Governor with the New York State Board of Elections as the candidate of the Anti-Prohibition Party.

"I am running on a platform of personal and economic freedom," said Davis who served four months on Riker's Island for pleading guilty to one count of promoting prostitution." I want to end the prohibition on marijuana, gay marriage and casino gambling to generate new revenues instead of raising taxes on already over-taxed New Yorkers."

Davis is an outspoken feminist, libertarian and gay marriage advocate.

"The two major parties have driven our state economy into a ditch," said Davis. "I think New Yorkers are ready for new ideas, new faces and new solutions," said Davis, 35, a former Hedge Fund Vice President. "Let the debate begin".

Independent candidates for Governor are requires to file 15,000 valid signatures with at least 100 in each of 15 Congressional districts.
