Ron Paul to meet with Marine Le Pen?

by Eric Dondero

My first reaction, perhaps the message that we've been pushing for years here at LR, is finally getting through to the Ron Paul people; that Radical Islam presents a serious threat to our Individual Liberties.

Here's the jist of it. From Roll Call:

Rep. Ron Paul (Texas), a GOP presidential hopeful, is expected to meet next month with French politician Marine Le Pen, whose party has been connected to anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant violence (sic) in her country.

In a statement released to Agence France-Presse, which first reported the meeting, Paul spokeswoman Rachel Mills said, “Madame Le Pen has requested a meeting and Congressman Paul has agreed to a meeting, if he is in town, and as of today it looks like he will be.”

And more:

Le Pen announced a tour of the United States last month with the express purpose of meeting with tea party leaders and others in the U.S. conservative movement.

She singled out Paul, whom she described as “a great defender of an international monetary system anchored on the gold standard.”

This dovetails with the release in the last few weeks of a series web-ads from the Paul campaign on Military stances. (This one Pro-Vets, is particularly good.)

We have said repeatedly here at LR, that we absolutely agree with Ron Paul's positions entirely on economic and other domestic matters; that our differences with him center around his strident views on non-interventionism, and against wars against Islamism.

The web ads, and now the announced meeting with European Anti-Islamist champion Marine Le Pen, suggest that maybe, just maybe, the Paul people are getting it. And that's a good thing.

Republican Senator Pat Toomey of PA stands on principle with vote for Free Trade

From Eric Dondero:

The vote on trade sanctions on China in the Senate was 63 to 35.

The WSJ makes note that one Senator from a traditionally Rust Belt State took a particularly courageous free market stance.

the Senate voted 63-35 on Tuesday to impose tariffs on China for manipulating its currency...

Among Republicans, freshman Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania cast one of the braver nays. The industrial western areas of the Keystone State are suffering, and Democrat Robert Casey voted the labor line.

Of note, 30 Republicans in total voted Pro-Free Trade. They were joined by 4 Democrats from Pacific Coastal States, and Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman.

Poland: Market-liberal Party finishes a strong first

by Clifford F. Thies

An almost complete tabulation of the vote shows that the market-liberal Civic Party has finished first, with 39 percent of the vote, well ahead of the conservative Justice Party, which finished with 30 percent.

The Civic Party's current junior partner, the social conservative Peasant's Party, received 9 percent and, together, they would maintain a narrow majority in the Polish parliament.

Palikot's Movement, a centrist, social-liberal party, finished third, with 10 percent. This new party was formed by certain former members of the Civic Party, and has a secularist and libertarian agenda on social issues, e.g., gay rights and legalizing marijuana.

The Left Alliance, a left-wing party, finished fifth, with 8 percent. This party as well as the Civic Party suffered from defections to Palikot's Movement.

It is probable that the Civic Party will simply maintain its current coalition with the Peasant's Party. Nevertheless, it is possible that the Civic Party will explore relations with the other two minor parties represented in the Polish national assembly. On the other hand, it is thought that the Justice Party would not be able work with any of the minor parties.

While Poland's real GDP growth slowed consequent to the global recession, the country avoided falling into a recession, and has in the past year the country returned to a 4 percent growth rate.

Poland is currently running a budget deficit of 6 percent of GDP, about half as bad as the U.S. and the troubled countries of the European periphery (e.g., Greece, Ireland, Italy and Spain). With a resumption of strong economic growth, the country anticipates meeting the EU deficit target next year.

Alabama Republican Rep. introduces Medical Marijuana bill

Sister's battle with Cancer convinced him

The Anniston Star reports "Rep. K.L. Brown plans to introduce medical marijuana bill in Montgomery" Oct. 2:

Before Rep. K.L. Brown’s sister succumbed to breast cancer 25 years ago, she used medicinal marijuana to ease her suffering.

Brown now wants legislation to provide similar relief to other chronically ill Alabama patients.

A Republican of Jacksonville, Brown said Friday that he will sponsor a bill during the 2012 legislative session to legalize medicinal marijuana in Alabama.

“My sister used it very successfully to control her nausea and pain,” Brown said. “I think the time has come for the state to consider medical marijuana.”

Editor's note - This website fully applauds Rep. Brown's efforts, and urges any and all Alabama LR readers to thank him for introducing this legislation.

Texas Democrat leader fails to get Republican to switch parties

From Eric Dondero:

Numerous Democrats from state legislators to county commissioners have switched to Republican in the last two years. The Dems haven't had much luck in doing the same.

From the Burnt Orange Report, by Keith Hampton, Austin Attorney, Oct. 12 "Turned a Republican into a Democrat... Almost":

For over a year, I have worked tirelessly to persuade Republican Judge Larry Meyers to become the first statewide Republican to switch parties. I was so convinced he would run against Presiding Judge Sharon Keller as a Democrat, I decided to run in an open seat to ensure we had a Democratic candidate in each race. But after weeks of meetings at Texas Democratic Party offices, it recently became clear that Judge Meyers would remain a Republican.

Sidenote; Democrats were successful most recently in persuading Carolyn Crist wife of former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist to become switch.

"Hardline libertarian" party in Slovakia holding up EU bailouts

“We are a classical liberal party. We are defenders of the Austrian school of economics,” -- uraj Droba, SaS MP

From the Financial Times of London, "Eurozone hopes hinge on Slovakia" Oct. 9:

A hardline libertarian party... looks set to throw a spanner in the machinery of expanding the eurozone’s bail-out fund – seen as crucial to restoring market confidence in the bloc.

Despite pressure from across the continent, Richard Sulik, leader of Slovakia’s libertarian Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party, repeated on Sunday that his party would reject the measure.

Additionally:

Senior European officials have intensified pressure on Slovak officials... In recent days, some of Europe’s most high-profile leaders – including Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, and José Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission – have publicly called on the remaining refuseniks to pass the deal...

“For Sulik it is not a question of popularity, it’s a question of doctrine,” says Grigorij Meseznikov. “He is a libertarian and he does not have the sense of the EU being a community.”

World’s newest nation South Sudan adopts English as a First Language

Pro-Western values now codified by law

From Cliff Thies:

Most educated people in Africa speak at least two languages: their home language (usually, a tribal language) and a national language. The national language helps to unify the people of the nation and better enables them to be part of the greater global society and economy. The adoption of English as its national language reflects South Sudan's self identity as a Black African and predominantly Christian country.

While continuing to negotiate some remaining issues with Sudan, South Sudan has turned it eyes to its south, applying to join the East Africa Community. The EAC consists of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Membership would enable South Sudan to develop roads and other infrastructure oriented to the south, with access via Kenya to the Indian Ocean. Interestingly, Sudan itself has also made such an application.

CAMERON MOVES TO PROTECT BRITISH BORDERS, BRITISH HISTORY AND BRITISH PRIDE!

by Eric Dondero

The Prime Minster gave a speech to Parliament on Monday on reforming British immigration laws. He is immediately directing immigration officials in his administration to crack-down on immigrants from mostly Muslim countries who have no loyalties to Britain, British values or British culture.

•Forced Marriages to be a criminal offense

•End to Anchor babies - Families will need to post a bond of thousands of pounds to bring in other family members from overseas

•A call on all loyal Citizens of Great Britain to turn in illegal immigrants, particularly those who overstay their Visas

•Lengthening and strengthening the Test for British citzenship, including adding a section on British history

Excerpt from the text of the Prime Minister's speech via The UK Guardian:

"So let me say one more thing abut the journey to becoming a British citizen," he added. "We're also going to change the citizenship test. There's a whole chapter in the citizenship handbook on British history but, incredibly, there is no question on British history in the actual test.

"Instead you'll find questions on the roles and powers of the main institutions of Europe and the benefits system within the UK. So we are going to revise the whole test … and put British history and culture at the heart of it."

Leftist AntiWar activists protest Wounded Warriors run

Code Pink now the mirror image of Westboro Baptist Church?

From Eric Dondero:

Pro-Defense libertarian Congressman Allen West reported on a truly disgusting act over the weekend.

From his Facebook:

Just finished running Army Ten Miler...
.by Congressman Allen West on Sunday, October 9, 2011 at 12:02pm.
and unofficial time was 1 hr 29 mins and change, great seeing many old friends and former bosses. However, what struck me as shameful was Code Pink being out on the run course protesting.

There were many Wounded Warriors doing the wheelchair race and running with their prosthetic devices. Perhaps Code Pink does not realize that those "Army Strong" men and women make it possible for them to stand on Independence Ave and demean their service, sacrifice, and commitment.......Land of the Free because we are the Home of the Brave!" Army Strong!

Really, is there now any difference at all between the Westboro Baptist Church protesting at funerals of deceased hero Army soldiers and Marines, and Code Pink protesting Wounded Warriors at benefit events?

Note - Some left-libertarian groups, such as AntiWar.com, have worked with Code Pink in the past. See 2010 LR article on AntiWar's Justin Raimondo and Code Pink opposing Rand Paul's candidacy for Senate.

Wisconsin man hit in the head with a tire iron for "insulting" Islam

LR FOLLOW-UP

From Eric Dondero:

The Blaze has further details on a story we first linked to last week here at LR.

One witness told a Wausau Daily Herald reporter that he saw the suspect pull up in his vehicle, get out of the car and then accuse the victim of criticizing his Islamic faith. According to the witness, when approached, the victim denied the charge. Unfortunately, that did little to stop the assailant from unleashing his fury.

The suspect purportedly grabbed a tire iron, hit the man in the head, punched him, then hopped back into his vehicle and sped off. A second witness, Bakonn Jackson, confirms these claims. In describing the scenario, Jackson said, ”it is unusual when an argument ends with the use of a tire iron, but it’s not unheard of.”

The perpetrator is still at large.

Los Angeles to ban all head coverings inside Businesses

Store owners, Banks have the right not to be threatened by individuals wearing Hoodies, Ski Masks or Burkas

From CBSLocal.com:

The effort is aimed at suspects who hide their faces during crimes, [LAPD Capt. Justin] Eisenberg said.

Headgear is often worn by criminals to shield their faces from security cameras during a break-in or robbery.

“If you think about schools where there are dress codes, or nightclubs or many establishments that have restraints as to what people can wear in their establishments, that’s a right that store owners have,” said Eisenberg. “This is just an additional tool that we’re giving store owners.”

Commenter Mike Lee wrote:

Workplace discrimination of Muslim women wearing Hijabs justified?

Health and Safety after all

From Eric Dondero:

Local governments and businesses in the U.S., Canada and across Europe are struggling with how to deal with increasing demands of Muslim workers. Hertz rent-a-car just made national news for laying-off Muslim drivers who took too many un-authorized breaks for prayer times.

Now this from the AustrianTimes.com:

A woman almost got strangled when her headscarf got caught in a dough mixer.

The 21-year-old woman worked a dough mixing machine in a tent at a party in Vienna's Krieau on Saturday night when her headscarf was caught in the running machine, strangling her by the throat.

A passer-by noticed the accident and cut the headscarf with a knife, saving the woman. She suffered life-threatening injuries but meanwhile is on the way of recovery, the doctor treating her said.

Could a bakery now claim that hiring a Muslim women would be a occupational safety hazard?

A Libertarian analysis of 9-9-9

Is it, as Michelle Bachman says, the 666 Plan turned upside down?

by Clifford F. Thies

The 999 plan is a catchy but unfair, unworkable and unconstitutional proposal. The plan is to tax all income twice, once at the business or individual level when the income is earned; and, again a second time when purchases are made. There are some deductions (charitable contributions and savings), but, for now, I'll ignore them. The combined tax rates, 18 percent, essentially kicks in at dollar one and stays flat or unchanged no matter how high is income.

The real advantages to the plan are: (1) increased compliance (or, a broader tax base), (2) lower cost of compliance, including ease of administration and reduced efforts to avoid or evade taxation, and (3) lower marginal tax rates to working and saving for some. These advantages can be obtained by a flat income tax, as well as by a national sales tax or fair tax as it is sometimes called, of which the 999 plan is a hybrid. But, a flat income tax can include a zero bracket so as to exempt the working poor from taxation.

For approximately the bottom third of the population, the 999 plan would raise their tax rate. For these people, the earned income tax credit essentially rebates their Social Security Tax, so their combined federal income and payroll tax rate is about zero. This proposal would raise their combined federal income and sales tax rate to 18 percent, assuming they do not save or make charitable contributions.

For approximately the middle third of the population, the plan would not change their tax rate much. For these people, the Social Security Tax - employer plus employee portion - plus what little federal income tax these people actually pay, total about what the income plus sales tax would total under the 999 plan. On the other hand, the 999 plan, as any flat income tax or fair tax, would mean less paperwork, and that's not nothing.

For approximately the top third of the population, the plan would greatly lower their tax rate. This would actually be a very good thing and result in a tremendous increase in work and investment. And, it is probable that revenue to the federal government from this segment - the top third - would actually increase, rather than fall.

While I appreciate efforts to differentiate oneself from other in a competitive marketplace, the difference between the flat tax as proposed by Dick Armey some years ago, and the fair tax as touted by Mike Huckabee during his Presidential run four years ago are not very great except that the fair tax taxes the working poor, and that's not in keeping with classical teachings on a just tax.

Prior to the Marxist influence on the church, it was thought that taxes should be in proportion to wealth above the poverty line. Following the influence of Marxism, we got stuck with progressive taxes, with multiple rates as well as lots of deductions, which now makes some form of tax reform absolutely necessary. But, just because people no longer know about just tax rate theory, doesn't mean we should accept any alternative to progressive taxes.

Plus, there is the tiny problem that the U.S. Constitution doesn't authorize a national sales tax. It allows a tariff, excise taxes and an income tax. In addition, we have very little experience collecting sales taxes on services, to include health care services. States that have attempted to subject services to their sales tax have done so incrementally, first applying the tax to this form of service and then to that form; and, none of them have gone very far in taxing services.

On the other hand, the apparatus is in place for the federal personal and corporate income tax, and - assuming we can get the votes - these can be transformed into a flat income tax rather easily.

Finally, there is the matter of the 999 plan converting Social Security into a pure welfare program, with absolutely no connection of benefits paid out to taxes paid in. Herman Cain says he is in favor of the Chilean model of Social Security, in which those who work build up ownership of financial assets to finance their own retirement, turning all who work into capitalists and ending the cleavage between "labor and capital."

We, at LR, are anxious to unite both halves of the productive class of society, those who sign the front of the paycheck with those who sign the back. The 999 plan would obliterate any Chilean-style reform of Social Security and make that program even more into a breeding ground for Moochers and Looters.

Ted Cruz raises more than $1 million in 3rd Quarter; Over $2.8 million to date

Endorsed by Rand Paul, Pat Toomey, Club for Growth and FreedomWorks PAC

Texas US Senate candidate Ted Cruz has now raised more for the Senate campaign than any other candidate in the race, including Lt. Gov. Dewhurst

AUSTIN—The Ted Cruz for U.S. Senate campaign today announced raising $1,057,953 in the third-quarter fundraising period, more than the campaign has raised in any other previous quarter. The Cruz campaign has now raised over $2.8 million, and has more than $2.4 million cash on hand.

Because of these remarkable fundraising totals:

Cruz has now raised more money for the Senate race than any other candidate in Texas. Cruz’s strongest financial quarter came after David Dewhurst entered the race.

Cruz has raised more money for the Senate race than the sitting Lt. Governor, despite the fact that virtually every lobbyist in the state is compelled to contribute to his campaign.

To date, the campaign has received contributions from 6,987 total donors, from 459 Texas cities, 166 counties, and all 50 States. The campaign is aggressively raising money across the nation, and sixty-five percent of the total money raised is from Texas.

“I am humbled and gratified by this incredible outpouring of support,” Cruz said. “All across Texas, and all across the nation, we’re seeing tremendous enthusiasm and excitement, as grassroots activists, Tea Party leaders, Republican Women, and trusted conservative leaders are all uniting behind our campaign.”

“With these remarkable fundraising totals and an energized grassroots army all across Texas, we will be able to get our message of fiscal responsibility to every primary voter in the state,” Cruz continued. “With their support, we’ll ensure that the next senator from Texas is a strong constitutional conservative -- ready to lead the effort to stop the Obama agenda and defend our liberty.”

Cruz is the only candidate in the country to be endorsed by Club for Growth PAC, Senate Conservatives Fund, and FreedomWorks PAC, as well as these four conservative senators: Jim DeMint, Mike Lee, Rand Paul, and Pat Toomey.

Democrat Party headed towards extinction in Louisiana

From Eric Dondero:

It may still be a few years off, but consider, the full total of 5 Democrats running in the race for Governor is 10%. Incredibly, the Libertarian Party candidate is polling 1/5 of that.

From Ballot Access News, Oct. 13:

Louisiana holds a gubernatorial election later this month. Ten candidates are on the ballot, including one Republican, four Democrats, one Libertarian, and four independent candidates. According to this poll, sponsored by WWL-TV, all four Democrats combined are only polling 10% of the vote. Bobby Jindal, the only Republican running, is at 57%, and 29% of the voters are undecided. The Libertarian, Scott Lewis, is at 2%, and the four independents combined are at 3%.

The four Democrats are Tara Hollis at 5%, Cary Deaton at 2%, Trey Roberts at 2%, and Nik Bird Papazoglakis at 1%.
