Libertarian's Derby second place is highest ever finish by female-trained horse (Elaine Burke)

With a wide-brimmed black hat and a conservative monochrome dress, Elaine Burke did not consider herself as an overt campaigner for women when she pulled up at Epsom trailing a horsebox on Saturday morning.

Not in the way tragic suffragette Emily Davison did when she arrived exactly 100 years ago.

But when Libertarian the horse Burke trains in Yorkshire crossed the line in second and still quickening to achieve the best ever finish for a female-trained horse in the Derby, she acknowledged the significance.

Close: Libertarian (left) finished second in the Derby on Saturday behind Ruler of the World

Achievement: Trainer Elaine Burke

Its nice to do it for the ladies, said Burke. Its the closest any woman has come to winning the Derby.

It is a century since Davison was fatally injured when she ran on to the course at Tattenham Corner and was pulled under a horse owned by King George V.

The monarchs granddaughter, The Queen, was at Epsom on Sunday, clad in pale blue and peering from her balcony as the big screen played a montage of Davison photographs.

It was a nod to the 100th anniversary of her death, but there was no finer tribute to the sacrifices made by the suffragettes than Burkes runner-up place.

Derby runner-up Libertarian out for revenge on Ruler Of The World in Irish Derby at the Curragh

Libertarian, who did not quite have the initial acceleration to match the winner at the top of the straight, passed four horses inside the last 100 yards to get up for second on the line when he did eventually hit his stride.

Dont be surprised if he steps up on what he did on Saturday, Burke said. If theyd gone a true gallop Im not saying hed have beaten Ruler Of The World but hed have been a bit closer.

"I think it would have enabled William [Buick] to have him in a slightly better position. As it was they were quite stacked up.

We were very pleased with him. We never normally feed them before they come home but they were late leaving the course after the race and the lads gave him a feed at Epsom, he polished off his haynet on the way home and had another feed when he got home at 11.30. Hes got a fantastic constitution.

The fallout from the Derby continued around Europe with Andr Fabre nominating the Grand Prix De Paris for Ocavango, fifth on Saturday.

He could have finished closer, Fabre said, but he met two bits of trouble its only what happens at Epsom all the time.

Fabre also plans to drop Sundays impressive French Derby winner, Intello, back to a mile for the Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville in August.

I think he will stay 12 furlongs if we want to run him in the Arc, he said. It is an unorthodox route to Longchamp in October and the obvious implication is to hold your bets for the Arc.

Andreas Wohler will drop Chopin, the first German horse in the Derby, back in trip. He didnt stay, he said of the colt, who finished seventh.

Frankie Dettoris search for a first winner since his ban moves on to Yarmouth, where he has four rides on Tuesday night. He was out of luck on his only mount at Windsor on Monday night but Movementneverlies was more competitive than his three previous domestic rides when finishing fourth behind Haley Turners mount, Harry Bosch, in the mile handicap.

Libertarian Senator Rand Paul Hopes Silicon Valley Can Love Some Republicans

My general impressions of Silicon Valley and California, in general, is that Libertarian-style Republicans would do better out here, and that Bush Republicans havent been doing well out here in a long time, the Senates uber-Libertarian, Rand Paul tells me, during his check-cashing good-will tour to Silicon Valley.

Republicans desperately want better relations with Silicon Valleys big-pocketed donors and top-tier programmers; the Senators solution is to show them that they can, in fact, love the small-government strain of conservatism.

Its no shocker that Republicans have an uphill climb in the Bay Area, so I put some tough questions to Paul to see if he could dispel the stereotypes.

Literally, A Modern Party

Most Republicans live in this century, not two or three centuries ago, Paul said, in a diplomatic response to my question about his partysnotoriously anti-science perception in the Valleynotably the head of a congressional science committee calling evolution and the big bang lies straight from the pit of Hell.

In fairness to Paul, Ive been outspoken about dispelling the myth of the luddite Republican: in the House of Representatives, conservatives are more savvy on social media, trailblazers in open government, and designed the most innovative tools in online direct participation.

Moreover, I think we can be sympathetic to Pauls position of having to both appeal to the liberal bastion of San Francisco without alienating his base. As far as small-goverment conservatives eyeing the presidency go, Paul is as geninually libertarian as one can be and still be a viable candidate.

Winning Back Support

Though President Obama won a staggering 84% of the vote in San Francisco, Pauls argues its because were not reaching our potential in appealing to the Valleys libertarian strain. I think, particularly in the tech world people are conscious of privacy concerns and I think theyre conscious of their civil liberties. I think many would like to see a Republican candidate or party that is less aggressive on foreign policy.

For good measure, he struck a chord with Californias love of the wacky-tobaccy, adding that California citizensmore apt to support politicians who dont want to lock people up and throw away the key for non-violent drug use.

Libertarian senate candidate from East Windsor charged with pot possession at Philadelphia legalization rally

The Libertarian candidate for state Senate in New Jersey's 14th District said today that he was arrested for marijuana possession at a legalization rally earlier this month, after lighting up and smoking a joint in public.

Don DeZarn, an East Windsor resident who works at Princeton University, said he was one of five activists arrested on May 18 at Smoke Down Prohibition V, a monthly event hosted by the Philadelphia chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws at Independence Hall.

Calling the rally and arrest acts of civil disobedience, DeZarn emphasized his support for legalizing marijuana, a chief tenet of his campaign platform.

"I honestly believe that nothing is going to change unless the people in mass stand up, speak out and fight for their rights," DeZarn said today. "They cant just sit back, relax and wait for the government to change things that we think are unjust laws."

DeZarn is expected to face incumbent Sen. Linda Greenstein (D-Plainsboro) and Republican candidate Peter Inverso, the Roma Bank CEO and former 14th district senator, in the November election.

In a profanity-laced three-minute speech to the rally crowd, DeZarn called on marijuana legalization supporters to contact elected officials and become more active in their protests.

"Our country is waging war against us 365 days a year, so we have to fight back the same way if we're going to win," DeZarn said. "We need to send up a cloud of smoke that they can see in Harrisburg, that they can see in Dover, that they can see in Trenton. We need to tell these [expletive] we're not going to take it anymore."

On May 13, DeZarn announced his candidacy for the state Senate seat at a press conference at Veterans Park in Hamilton, while smoking a marijuana joint to highlight his position on legalizing the drug.

In videos posted on YouTube, DeZarn is shown being handcuffed and escorted by law enforcement officers alongside Adam Kokesh, a Libertarian activist and podcast host.

Dozens of videos on YouTube uploaded by Kokesh's supporters allege that DeZarn planted evidence on Kokesh during their arrests, but DeZarn denied the claim and said his name had been cleared.
