That "Research" About How Smartphones Are Causing Deformed Human Bodies Is SEO Spam, You Idiots

That

You know that "research" going around saying humans are going to evolve to have hunchbacks and claws because of the way we use our smartphones? Though our posture could certainly use some work, you'll be glad to know that it's just lazy spam intended to juice search engine results.

Let's back up. Today the Daily Mail published a viral story about "how humans may look in the year 3000." Among its predictions: hunched backs, clawed hands, a second eyelid, a thicker skull and a smaller brain.

Sure, that's fascinating! The only problem? The Mail's only source is a post published a year ago by the renowned scientists at... uh... TollFreeForwarding.com, a site that sells, as its name suggests, virtual phone numbers.

If the idea that phone salespeople are purporting to be making predictions about human evolution didn't tip you off, this "research" doesn't seem very scientific at all. Instead, it more closely resembles what it actually is — a blog post written by some poor grunt, intended to get backlinks from sites like the Mail that'll juice TollFreeForwarding's position in search engine results.

To get those delicious backlinks, the top minds at TollFreeForwarding leveraged renders of a "future human" by a 3D model artist. The result of these efforts is "Mindy," a creepy-looking hunchback in black skinny jeans (which is how you can tell she's from a different era).

Grotesque model reveals what humans could look like in the year 3000 due to our reliance on technology

— Daily Mail Online (@MailOnline) November 3, 2022

"To fully realize the impact everyday tech has on us, we sourced scientific research and expert opinion on the subject," the TollFreeForwarding post reads, "before working with a 3D designer to create a future human whose body has physically changed due to consistent use of smartphones, laptops, and other tech."

Its sources, though, are dubious. Its authority on spinal development, for instance, is a "health and wellness expert" at a site that sells massage lotion. His highest academic achievement? A business degree.

We could go on and on about TollFreeForwarding's dismal sourcing — some of which looks suspiciously like even more SEO spam for entirely different clients — but you get the idea.

It's probably not surprising that the this gambit for clicks took off among dingbats on Twitter. What is somewhat disappointing is that it ended up on StudyFinds, a generally reliable blog about academic research. This time, though, for inscrutable reasons it treated this egregious SEO spam as a legitimate scientific study.

The site's readers, though, were quick to call it out, leading to a comically enormous editor's note appended to the story.

"Our content is intended to stir debate and conversation, and we always encourage our readers to discuss why or why not they agree with the findings," it reads in part. "If you heavily disagree with a report — please debunk to your delight in the comments below."

You heard them! Get debunking, people.

September symposium will celebrate life and legacy of John Claypool – Baptist News Global

If youve ever heard a sermon preached by a moderate Baptist pastor, youve likely heard the influence of John Claypool, whether you knew it or not.

Claypool served four well-known Baptist churches as pastor in the second half of the 20th century before becoming an Episcopal priest. He was best-known for a confessional style of preaching that continues to be emulated by many moderate and progressive preachers.

I know of few if any pastors or preachers who have had such a great impact on our generation of ministers as Claypool, said Stephen Shoemaker, who followed the legendary pastor at two churches, Broadway Baptist in Fort Worth, Texas, and Crescent Hill Baptist in Louisville, Ky.

I know of few if any pastors or preachers who have had such a great impact on our generation of ministers as Claypool.

Shoemaker will be among the 16 presenters at a Sept. 16-18 symposium celebrating Claypools life and legacy. The event will be held at Crescent Hill Baptist Church as this years William M. Johnson Lecture Series. Registration information is online at https://gladreunion2022.eventbrite.com.

As a preacher and the author of 11 books, Claypool gained national notoriety especially among a generation of Southern Baptist pastors coming of age as the Southern Baptist Convention splintered between moderates and conservatives, labels that influenced not only theology but also preaching styles.

Claypools narrative-driven preaching differed significantly from the three points and a poem style often associated with Southern Baptist sermons of the era. It also differed from the strictly exegetical style favored by conservative and fundamentalist preachers. Younger pastors sought to emulate his style.

His innovative and deeply authentic style of proclamation developed from personal tragedy called confessional preaching provided powerful pastoral care from the pulpit and reminded generations of Baptists and Episcopalians alike that life is a gift, said Aaron Weaver, communications director for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and co-editor of a new book on Claypool that will debut at the symposium. As a Baptist historian, Im excited to share more about Claypools story and his continued influence on present-day Baptist pastors.

Claypools preaching was significantly influenced by the death of his 9-year-old daughter, Laura Lue, from leukemia in 1970. His first book was on the spirituality of grief, Tracks of a Fellow Struggler. He also was shaped by and supportive of the Civil Rights movement at a time when most Southern Baptists were not.

Over the course of his ministry, John Claypool made significant contributions to the Christian faith and the progressive Baptist tradition through his affirmation of the full dignity of Black women and men as well as his role as an ally and advocate in the civil rights struggle of the 1960s, Aaron Weaver explained.

Claypool earned an undergraduate degree at Baylor University in Texas and then a doctorate from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kentucky. Those two states would become important locales in his pastoral career. He served as senior pastor at Crescent Hill Baptist in Louisville from 1960 to 1971 and then at Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth from 1971 to 1976. Both congregations included large contingencies of faculty members from SBC seminaries located nearby. Thus Claypool shaped not only his congregations but also those who were teaching young pastors.

In an unusual move in 1976, Claypool left the 5,000-member Broadway Baptist Church to become pastor of a much smaller congregation of 400 members at Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson, Miss. Historically, few Baptist pastors leave larger churches to serve smaller churches. From Northminster, Claypool moved back to Texas to serve Second Baptist Church of Lubbock, but in 1985 resigned and moved toward ordination as an Episcopal priest. He served 14 years as rector of St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Birmingham, Ala., until his retirement in 2000. He later taught preaching at McAfee School of Theology, a Baptist-affiliated seminary in Atlanta, until his death in 2005.

In 1979, Claypool became the first Southern Baptist minister to deliver the Lyman Beecher Lectures at Yale University. In the 1960s, he also appeared regularly on a weekly radio program called The Moral Side of the News.

Another of the young pastors deeply influenced by Claypool is Charles Johnson, who today leads the public-school advocacy group Pastors for Texas Children. Johnson was called to serve alongside Claypool as youth minister at Northminster and later followed him as pastor at Second Baptist Church in Lubbock.

Claypool played a pivotal role in his life and ministry, said Johnson, who is one of the organizers of the September symposium.

In addition to Shoemaker, Johnson and Aaron Weaver, other presenters at the symposium will include Kevin Cosby, president of Simmons College of Kentucky; Douglas Weaver of Baylor University; Alan Culpepper, former dean at McAfee; John W. Arnett, member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church; Glenn Jonas of Campbell University; Mark LaGory, deacon at St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Birmingham; Henry Parsley, Episcopal bishop of Alabama; Rowan Claypool, John Claypools son; Loyd Allen of McAfee School of Theology; Julie Whidden Long of McAfee; Carolyn Ratliff of Birmingham; and Bill Leonard, former dean of Wake Forest University School of Divinity.

Inside the new John Madden documentary: How Fox Sports pulled off its expansive ode to the Hall of Famer – The Athletic

Joel Santos and Tom Rinaldi describe the experience of making a documentary on John Madden as perpetually being on their own version of the Madden Cruiser.

Over the past 10 months, from a casino hotel outside the Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York to the Amador Valley in Northern California, Santos and Rinaldi have traveled the United States to interview pro football dignitaries on the subject of Madden. The interview list includes individuals known in every football household Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, Brett Favre, Lamar Jackson, Peyton Manning, Patrick Mahomes, Joe Montana, Bill Parcells, Andy Reid, Lawrence Taylor and Roger Goodell, among others. It includes lesser-known people who played a vital role in Maddens life, such as Willie Yarbrough, the driver for 23 years of the famed 85-foot luxury coach. They spoke to Virginia Madden, the NFL broadcasters wife of more than 60 years (they married on Dec. 26, 1959) who worked at a bar when the couple met. They also sat down with the man himself. The journey culminates on Christmas Day at 2 p.m. ET when Fox airs All Madden, a 90-minute documentary co-directed and co-produced by Santos and Rinaldi on the life of the Hall of Fame NFL coach and broadcaster. The doc (actual length: 72 minutes) will lead into the Packers-Browns game on Fox.

The origins of the Madden documentary date back to Fox Sports lead NFL producer Richie Zyontz, who produced Madden and is one of his closest friends. Zyontz proposed the project to Fox Sports chief executive officer Eric Shanks last January during the NFL playoffs.

Basics of XMR and Why It’s Becoming a Crypto of Choice – TechiExpert.com

The number one reason for anyone to transact with and invest in Monero cryptocurrency is its unique commitment to private and secure transactions and usage. In comparison, many transactions made using the largest and most popular cryptocurrencies can still be traced to keys, or in other cases, transactions are recorded and publicly viewable.

While some of these cryptos now offer add-ons for better privacy or have wallet options that perform these security for them, only Monero guarantees such anonymity baked into the coin itself, which leaves much less to consider when deciding on the best Monero wallet for managing all crypto transactions. A growing number of people around the world have already placed their investments on this coin, consequently increasing its value rapidly.

To understand why Monero is turning into a top cryptocurrency, here are some of the basics of XMR and what sets it apart from the rest.

Privacy from the Beginning

Originally called Bytecoin in 2012, the new cryptocurrency was created as an altcoin focused on privacy and anonymity. Unlike other altcoins, its code was not based on the most popular cryptocurrencies at the time, but instead, it was created from scratch, integrating special technology called CryptoNote to become nearly untraceable.

The coin faced some controversies and had several glitches, but the community behind the coin quickly removed any unscrupulous figures from the project. Within two years, Bytecoin underwent hard forks to fix all of its bugs while further improving its security, and by the end, its name was changed to Bitmonero and eventually shortened to Monero.

CryptoNote and Other Privacy Functions

The original bytecoin used what was called CryptoNote for its privacy. It worked by using ring signatures through which a random temporary public key or address was made in place of a senders real key when sending Monero to another user. A distinct transaction key would also be created to divert traceability away from the receiver, protecting both parties in the transaction.

This method of ring signatures was greatly improved after hard forks since its earlier iterations. Monero now utilizes its blockchains to pool several public keys who sign or verify a transaction to serve as possible senders or receivers, but through this process, there is no way for an intruding party to know which of the keys is actually involved in the transaction.

As with any technology, this protocol does not remain invincible forever, and there are eventually people who figure out how to work their way through these privacy measures. However, Moneros code is open source, and as the community grows larger, more people can contribute to updates and improvements that make Moneros privacy increasingly more difficult to bypass.

Altcoins usually go off on rough beginnings when they first launch, but what differs is how steadily their value changes and sustains afterwards. In the case of Monero, its value was able to rise from $13 to $470 within less than a year when it was launched in 2017. Although it has not gone down to double-digit values since, nowadays it oscillates between $130 and $500, currently ranking in the top fifty cryptocurrencies.

Currently, there is no way around the volatility of the cryptocurrency market, so as with all other altcoins, the market behavior of each is purely up to speculation. However, the more practical way to discern cryptocurrencies is by what they each promise with regard to the future of finance. In this case, Monero is better taken as a long-term investment.

Monero and the Future

Technology in all fields has been rapidly developing, but this has come with equally pressing concerns about privacy and security in the wake of increasing hacker attacks and targeted advertisements. It is clear that not even peoples finances are safe from such intrusion either, which only serves to heighten the appeal of Moneros privacy-oriented direction.

These claims are not merely self-proclamations either. Experts and leaders in software security such as John McAfee have expressed their support for the coins pursuits in financial security for its users. More than this, the value of Monero itself has been steadily rising as more people continue to support and to invest in it for its cryptocurrency privacy developments.

Perhaps investing in Monero is a no-brainer at this point, especially for those who want to keep their financial activity and personal data safe in the digital space. Furthermore, it might just be the right time to catch the altcoin before it skyrockets in value in the next few years. However, it is important to be responsible with handling investments, no matter what they are.

In the case of Monero, the investment must come from expendable money since it is never a good idea to risk ones funds for basic needs by investing in such an unpredictable market. If the initial investment is no problem, it is just as important to secure a proper wallet, which provides just as many privacy features as the coin itself.

National Court of Spain Suspends John McAfee Extradition Hearing Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News

The National Court in Spain has suspended the hearing destined to deal with the extradition request that John McAfee, the well known cryptocurrency influencer, has pending for its tax-related crimes in the U.S. The entrepreneur was apprehended in October last year in the El Prat Airport where he was going to take a flight. No new dates have been announced for the new hearing.

The National Court of Spain suspended the extradition hearing of John McAfee this week for tax evasion charges, as was reported by local media. The Court alleged that due to some mistakes in managing the case, the defense would not have been in its full capacity to effectively exert its function. Javier Villalba, the lawyer of John McAfee, had not been able to get the full file of the case before the hearing. John McAfee was apprehended last year in the El Prat airport before taking a flight.

Villalba criticized the way that the Spanish justice is dealing with McAfee criticizing his client was jailed without bail. He said McAfee was in bad shape due to his age (78 years), and being in a Spanish prison for nine months for tax-related crimes. Villalba argued against this, stating:

It is not a blood related crime or drug trafficking

McAfee, who is also known for being a cybersecurity pioneer, allegedly failed to file tax statements from 2014 to 2018 and faces a maximum penalty of five years per tax evasion charge and 1-year per failure to file taxes each year. The Court would be accepting the extradition request by three of the five charges attributed to McAfee. A date for a new hearing was not set.

However, this is not the first run-in that the cryptocurrency influencer has had with justice. McAfee himself stated in a Twitter post he was jailed in Spain for using a thong mask in August. He was also detained for driving under influence of controlled substances in Tennessee and was also detained for illegal entry in Guatemala.

McAfee was also arrested in the Dominican Republic for carrying guns and ammunition into the country. But more importantly, he was one of the primary suspects in a murder case in Belice, where one of his neighbors, with whom he argued often, was shot.

What do you think about the suspension of McAfees extradition hearing? Tell us in the comments section below.

Can virtual reality help the emotional well-being of older people? – Economic Times

POMPANO BEACH: Terry Colli and three other residents of the John Knox Village senior community got a trip via computer to the International Space Station in the kickoff to a Stanford University study on whether virtual reality can improve the emotional well-being of older people.

Donning 1-pound (470-gram) headsets with video and sound, the four could imagine floating weightless with astronauts and get a 360-degree tour of the station. In other programs, residents can take virtual visits to Paris, Venice, Egypt or elsewhere around the globe; attend a car rally, skydive or go on a hike.

"I feel great. It is amazing. It is like you are really there," said Colli, 73, and a former spokesman for the Canadian embassy in Washington.

Virtual reality works by making what the person sees and hears track with what they are doing. In a VR trip to Paris, for example, a participant might turn to the left and see the Eiffel Tower with a musician playing in the foreground, and then turn right and find two people conversing. If the participant moves toward one, that sound increases while the other diminishes.

"There is a fair amount of previously published research by academic labs around the world that shows VR, when administered properly, can help reduce anxiety, improve mood, and reduce pain," said Jeremy Bailenson, the Stanford lab's founding director. "This particular study is focused on how using VR might reduce the residents' feelings of isolation from the outside world all the more important after the isolation we all faced during the pandemic."

During Tuesday's demonstration at the suburban Fort Lauderdale community, Colli, Anne Selby, 77; Mark Levey, 64; and Hugh Root, 92, moved their heads from left to right and up and down as they got individual tours of the space station.

"It really felt like you were traveling and not alone either. In some of the video, there are people," said Levey, a former federal government worker.

Selby, an artist, said that she felt a bit nauseated as she moved through the space station because it was so realistic, but that she was able to cope by taking deep breaths.

"Regardless of my age, I was right in the middle of it," she said.

Root, a retired insurance salesman, was blunt: "It blows my mind."

Chris Brickler, CEO of MyndVR, the Dallas company that provided the equipment, said volunteers will be screened to assure they are mentally suitable for using virtual reality and each attendant has an abort button if the person becomes overwhelmed by the experience. John Knox's residents include people and couples who live alone, in assisted living and with full-time nursing.

"As we age, we feel there is a disconnect sometimes that can happen when there is a lack of mobility," Brickler said. "We can't travel as much as we want, we can't connect with nature as much as we want, can't have connections with animals. All sorts of connections get lost and our four walls start shrinking in. What we have tried to do is create a platform where we can bring the world back."

Monica McAfee, John Knox's chief marketing and innovation officer, said the community's administrators believe VR helps residents it's been used on a limited basis there for three years but Stanford's study "will provide the empirical data." For example, she said, they want to know if VR can help residents with dementia who suffer from "sundowning" severe mood downswings that begin at dusk.

"Is this a way to redirect them to enjoy something?" she said.

Northern Ohio University associate philosophy professor Erica Neely, who studies the ethics of technology, said it's important that Stanford is getting fully informed consent, screening participants and making sure they aren't using VR alone, especially at first. She is not involved in the study.

"We definitely don't want anyone to get stuck in the experience if they become distressed and can't figure out how to turn it off," she said. "The fact that there is a companion/caretaker who can go with (the participant) is utter genius. ... The idea of 'Well, we don't necessarily have people with diminished capacities wandering around by themselves through physical space maybe we can do the same for virtual space' was a really good one."

I lived on the tropical island where a British billionaires daughter-in-law allegedly killed a cop. Trust me, its no paradise – RT

Damian Wilson

is a UK journalist, ex-Fleet Street editor, financial industry consultant and political communications special advisor in the UK and EU.

is a UK journalist, ex-Fleet Street editor, financial industry consultant and political communications special advisor in the UK and EU.

The policemans mysterious shooting, while he was with the woman on a moonlit dock late at night, shows even those living the life of luxury can lose it all in an instant. Im not surprised at this bizarre turn of events at all.

The strange circumstances surrounding the fatal late-night shooting of a police superintendent, allegedly by the daughter-in-law of a UK billionaire with whom he was watching the moon, have caught the imagination of people across the world, but on this beautiful tropical island, the bizarre and the brutal are never too far away.

As a former long-time resident of Ambergris Caye, a sun-soaked stretch of sand, mangroves and coconut palms in the Caribbean Sea 16 miles (25 kilometers) off the mainland of Belize, Central America, nothing that happens there would surprise me.

So, when I heard of Canadian businesswoman Jasmine Hartins arrest over the death of police superintendent Henry Jemmott, it was not a case of but that sorta thing never happens there. And even once the facts began to emerge that the 38-year-old was the partner of megabucks Tory party donor Lord Ashcrofts youngest son, Andrew, that she and the superintendent, 42, were enjoying the moonlight alone together on a dock at 1am after an evening of drinking together, that she was giving him a shoulder rub and accidentally shot him in the head with his own gun, that the dead man fell on her and so she pushed his body into the water it was still not that surprising.

After all, this is the place where, once, on a visit to a police station, I couldnt help but admire the flourishing marijuana plant on a windowsill. Where a local family used to buy chickens from the supermarket to feed a 15-foot-long (4.5-meter-long) crocodile that visited their front yard each evening watched by spectators, like me, sitting in golf carts. They might have lost two dogs to the insatiable beast, but no one messed with the kids at school. Unusual things elsewhere are commonplace on Ambergris Caye.

The incident marks the first murder of the year in San Pedro, the islands only town, which, since Covid-19 struck and lockdown was imposed, has seen a drop in crime, recording just one murder last year: the slaying of Marisela Gonzales, for which her husband, David, was later charged.

There were still plenty of other crimes, however, and even a bizarre case in which disciplinary action was meted out to a female San Pedro police officer who was caught on CCTV helping herself to a prisoners belongings.

There were two separate armed robberies in just one day in September; in November, there was the spectacular bonfire of more than 220 pounds (100 kilograms) of seized drugs, including marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy tablets; a former San Pedro policeman was charged with rape of a minor; three fishermen were remanded in custody for an attempted kidnapping, burglary and wounding; and all this on top of the usual seizures of cash proceeds from drug-dealing, the items taken illegally from the offshore marine reserve, and the deportation of border-jumpers and US felons who regularly turn up in town looking to lay low.

Nevertheless, 2020 was quiet, particularly when compared with the year before, which saw a total of 12 murders on an island of just 15,000 citizens which was part of a 30% reduction in crime compared to 2018.

While the tourist brochures paint an alluring picture of No shoes? No shirt? No problem!, San Pedro is actually a hustling, traffic-choked Central American town. As on many Caribbean islands, once you stray from the bars, restaurants and colourful shops of the beachfront, what my Belizean friends call Second World poverty stares you straight in the face. Its an unsettling and stark contrast to the carefree, cocktail-enhanced, hammock-swinging hedonism the tourists enjoy.

Ambergris Caye is a well-known drop-off point for the drug cartels of South America on the way to Mexico and further north, and plenty of funny money and drugs washes around in the local economy, so it pays to stay alert.

Away from prying eyes, to the north of the caye, which extends around 28 miles towards the Yucatan Peninsula, criminals go about their business unmolested, trafficking drugs, smuggling contraband among the mangroves and even settling scores as the two bodies found in a shallow grave a few years ago would suggest.

Popular American singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett is a regular visitor to San Pedro, Hes currently building a Margaritaville resort named after his 1977 hit and aimed at enticing island dreamers from the US to invest in a condo in paradise and no doubt hell have plenty of takers.

Its the same idea that Jasmine Hartin and her partner Andrew Ashcroft had with the beachfront resort they run. But, unfortunately for them, their tropical dream has turned into a nightmare. A policeman is dead. The daughter-in-law of a rich, powerful man with extensive business interests in Belize is being held responsible, and the authorities are under intense scrutiny to ensure justice is not only done, but is seen to be done.

To holidaymakers, the Caribbean lifestyle is all about lazy days, wide smiles and sand between your toes, with a ready drink to hand. For those who live there all year round, alarming encounters with the darker side of life in the tropics are all too often unavoidable.

John McAfee is Doing Great in Prison: It’s Like The Hilton

For a lot of us, prison is a dark and scary place where no one wants to be But we are not John McAfee.

The software developer, tax evader, crypto-shiller, drugs user, whale-fucker, former US presidential candidate and crypto-shiller sent a statement to his followers sharing his experience in the Spanish prison after his arrest.

And things arent so bad In fact, according to his own words, at 75 years old, John McAfee is having a fascinating time there:

Hello from prison my friends. I am having a fascinating time. Spanish prison is not that bad. We can wear whatever clothes we want. We can smoke and socialize. Its like the Hilton without turn down service.

John McAfee continued to explain in his message how he has adapted to life inside the prison, and how he is making new friends:

My cell mate is an ambassadors drug dealer, I wish I would have known him before. The prison yard is full of murderers but mostly nice people. I spend most of my time with my back to the wall. I miss and love you all. I will update you more when I am able.

This isnt the first time John McAfee has been in jail, and of course its not his first encounter with the law. On July 24, 2019, authorities in the Dominican Republic apprehended him and part of his team after they found several large-caliber weapons without proper documentation.

However, not only did he come out unharmed, but he also claimed that he was treated very well, and published several smiling photos with some security officials.

John McAfee was arrested in Spain after years of investigation on charges ranging from tax evasion to fradulent promotion of ICOs. If he were extradited and prosecuted in the United States, he would face not only financial penalties but also a significant amount of time in a U.S. prison And those are not like the Hilton.

During 2017, John McAfee used to promote altcoins on a daily basis. Tron (TRX), Verge (XVG), Reddcoin and other projects passed through his hands as he talked about them and how he believed such initiatives could revolutionize the world. He kept doing that even after the ICO hype was over.

However, it was later discovered that McAfee received payments for these promotions, and was not transparent when separating advice from opinions and paid promotions. This may have been a fraudulent way of attracting investors and is punishable under US law.

Thats one of the reasons he is at the Hilton today.

McAfees statement was shared by the official account of his wife, Janice. She confirmed the news of his arrest on October 6. She assured that McAfee was well and thanked the entire crypto community for their support.

Janice McAfee added that his husband has always sticked true to his beliefs: Regardless of whatever John may may not have done, he has spent most of his retirement fighting not only for his freedom but for everyones freedom, she said.

John McAfee, antivirus software pioneer, arrested in Spain …

The antivirus software entrepreneur John McAfee, who has been indicted for tax evasion in the US after allegedly failing to declare earnings running into millions of dollars, has been arrested by Spanish police while attempting to board a flight from Barcelona to Istanbul.

A June indictment charging McAfee with tax evasion and wilful failure to file tax returns was unsealed in federal court in Memphis, Tennessee, on Monday after McAfees arrest in Spain, where extradition is pending, the US attorneys office said.

McAfee, 75, has been charged with evading taxes after failing to report millions earned promoting cryptocurrencies, consulting work, speaking engagements and the sale of the rights to his life story for a documentary.

According to prosecutors, he hid assets from the Internal Revenue Service, including real estate property, a vehicle and a yacht, in the names of other people.

The securities and exchange commission has also brought civil charges against McAfee, alleging he made more than $23.1m (18m) in undisclosed compensation from false and misleading cryptocurrency recommendations.

A Spanish police source said McAfee had been arrested at Barcelonas El Prat airport on 3 October.

He was travelling to Istanbul and when his documents were run through the database, it emerged that he was the subject of a US warrant on fraud charges, said the source.

Judicial sources told Reuters McAfee had appeared before a high court judge via videolink after his arrest and had been remanded in custody in a Catalan jail pending the extradition process.

Following his detention, McAfees official Instagram account posted a Free McAfee message accompanied by a photo of him.

The US indictment alleges that McAfee failed to file tax returns from 2014 to 2018, despite receiving considerable income from several sources. The indictment does not allege that McAfee received any income or had any connection with the antivirus software company bearing his name during those years, prosecutors said.

If convicted of all charges, he could face up to 30 years in prison.

Since making a fortune with the antivirus software in the 1980s that still bears his name, McAfee has become a self-styled crypto-currency guru, and has 1 million followers on Twitter.

But in recent years, his personal life had drawn as much interest as his professional achievements. He became the subject of frenzied media scrutiny following the unsolved 2012 murder of a neighbour in Belize. McAfee said he knew nothing about the murder, but was worried he may have been the attackers intended target.

When the police found him living with a 17-year-old girl and discovered a large arsenal of weapons in his home in the Central American country, McAfee disappeared on a month-long flight that drew breathless media coverage.

The dead neighbours family later filed a wrongful death suit against McAfee and last year a court in Florida found against him, ordering him to pay the family more than $25m.

In 2015, McAfee was arrested in the US for driving under the influence and possession of a gun while under the influence.

He was released from detention in the Dominican Republic in July 2019 after he and five others were suspected of travelling on a yacht carrying high-calibre weapons, ammunition and military-style gear, officials in the Caribbean island said at the time.

John McAfee prison interview: I plan to never return to …

Imprisoned software tycoon John McAfee has described his ongoing experience locked inside a Spanish prison as a fascinating adventure and says he plans to never return to the US.

Nearly two years after fleeing the US with his wife and a handful of bodyguards, Spanish police arrested McAfee last month at the request of the US Department of Justice. Prosecutors are currently seeking to extradite him to face tax fraud charges.

It is the latest in a string of controversies for McAfee, who has been arrested numerous times since founding the eponymous antivirus company more than 30 years ago. He has previously been suspected of unlicensed drug manufacturing, carrying illegal weapons, and in 2012 police in Belize named him a person of interest in connection to the murder of his neighbour though he was never charged and strongly denies any involvement.

Speaking exclusively to The Independent from the Brians 1 prison just outside Barcelona, where he has been incarcerated since early October, 75-year-old McAfee describes the latest stint as by far the most entertaining of all his stays behind bars.

I am constantly amused and sometimes moved. The graffiti alone could fill a thousand-page thriller, he says. A few of my fellow prisoners have confided in me small pieces of their lives.

One young man from Senegal confided that he is a guest here for stabbing random people. They were bad people, he explained. Another confessed to accidentally strangling his wife. He did not explain why it was an accident but you must admit accidents do happen.

All in all, its fascinating to watch and an adventure to experience.

Prisoners and guards recognised him when he first went in, with some even asking him for his autograph. He is distinguished not only by his infamy and foreignness, but also by his tendency to wear a suit and tie.

One nice aspect of Spanish prisons is that prison uniforms are not required. You may dress according to your means and desires, he says. I was issued an orange jumpsuit on arrival, as all are, and occasionally wear it when the mood strikes me. At other times I wear everything from a suit and tie to lounge wear.

(Janice McAfee)

McAfees main point of contact with the outside world is his wife Janice, who remains in Spain but has so far been unable to visit him in person. Instead, she keeps in touch through eight-minute phone calls, providing updates about ongoing legal matters and other news.

She has started the #FreeJohnMcAfee and #FreeMcAfee campaigns on social media in an effort to raise awareness about his situation, while also offering support behind the scenes.

Right now we are playing this situation close to our chests and I dont want to reveal any details on how we are working to secure Johns release, she tells The Independent. This is an obvious political scheme on the part of the US government and we are working on strategies to reveal this obvious scam.

The controversial libertarian has claimed in recent years that he has been pursued by various branches of federal law enforcement agencies, including the CIA and FBI. The latest arrest relates to the Inland Revenue Service.

Prosecutors in Tennessee, where McAfee lived before leaving the US, claim McAfee hid property, a yacht and other assets from the IRS. When McAfee fled the country in January 2019 with his wife and bodyguards, he took the yacht to the Carribean but soon faced further troubles with local police. After hopping from the Bahamas to Cuba, his entourage was detained in the Dominican Republic for carrying high-calibre weapons, ammunition and military-style gear without declaring them.

McAfee says they were arrested before they even had a chance to declare them, and were threatened with deportation to the US. A couple of decent lawyers prevented that, at which point they asked us where we wanted to go. I said England, thats where they sent us, he says.

(Europris)

A June indictment, unsealed last month, accused McAfee of tax evasion and wilful failure to file tax returns between 2014 and 2018. McAfee freely admits this, saying he has not in fact paid taxes for 10 years and informed the IRS of his refusal to file returns in principle. The agencys decision to pursue his case only came after he announced his intention to run for president under the Libertarian banner, he claims.

McAfee came close to winning the Libertarian Party candidacy in 2016, losing out to Gary Johnson, and planned to run again in 2020. Instead, he was forced to follow this years US elections from prison, drip fed morsels through phone calls with his wife.

His refusal to pay tax aligns with the Libertarian Partys policy on the issue, which states, forcing people to pay taxes is inherently wrong. The Libertarian Party did not respond to a request for comment from The Independent about whether it was assisting McAfee in any way with his legal situation.

If convicted in the US of all charges, McAfee faces up to 30 years in prison. However, he claims there is zero chance that Spain will extradite him. The courts will see the clear resentment of the American government toward my public condemnation," he says, adding that the possibility of him ever returning to the US is extremely unlikely.

Court dates remain pending.

UAE Tech Podcast: Mathew Yarger on Cybersecurity, Decentralization and the ‘Machine Economy’ – Al-Bawaba

Popularized in sci-fi movies like the Terminator, the Matrix and others is the concept of a machine-age, or what Matthew Yarger and others refer to as the machine economy. Weve seen this debate in regard to ethical AI, or "fairness in algorithms, but a new frontier is appearing in regard to centralization, walled gardens and networks with a single point of failure.

In a centralized system, there are fears automation could allow Skynet scenario - machines making decisions so complex, that meaningful human control is no longer necessary or perhaps even possible.

In a DLT, or decentralized ledger system, information is no longer owned by a single platform. A malicious AI, non-state actor or cyber-criminal has no central location to hack - at least in theory, the attack surface is reduced from billions, right down to 1.

Automation & DLT technologies are changing philosophy and ideation in the cyber-security sector. But are decentralized systems really the future? Will these systems be permissioned or permissionless? And can Decentralized Ledger Technology allow automated systems to scale into our economies and personal work lives, without compromising our safety, privacy and security?

Today were talking with Mathew Yarger, Head of Mobility and Automotive at the IOTA Foundation, on the machine economy, and cybersecurity.

Cryptocurrency $1 Trillion Dollar Market Cap Prediction Comes True as Thomas Carter Shares Insights on Digital Assets for 2021: Imperium Group…

DALLAS, TX / ACCESSWIRE / February 9, 2021 / Fueled by unprecedented institutional investment activity, the cryptocurrency market recently breached $1 trillion in market capitalization.

If you're familiar with the Who's Who in the cryptocurrency space, you've likely heard of John McAfee's gonzo wager where he promised to ingest his, ahem... "membrum virile," if Bitcoin didn't reach a price of $1 million by December 31, 2020 -- also referred to as, "The Great Dickening."

As far as we know, neither of those propositions came to fruition, however, a less salacious prediction was made by digital asset visionary Thomas Carter in February of 2020. At the time of the prediction, the price of Bitcoin was roughly of today's price.

The market cap prediction is one of many astute forecasts in the fintech & crypto space made by Carter over the past several years, solidifying his position in the market as a digital assets innovator and thought leader.

Carter was ahead of the curve with his flagship venture, DealBox's pioneering digital securities platform, in 2018. Since that time, DealBox has become the leading regulatory compliant tokenized securities issuance and investment platform on the market.

DealBox provides a feature-rich and robust platform using the Tezos blockchain technology. The groundbreaking platform gives issuers and investors a savvy approach to being first-in-line to invest and raise capital via smart securities issuance technologies.

As with traditional securities, these tokenized assets fall under the regulatory auspices of the SEC and CFTC and are rigorously vetted. Unlike traditional securities, however, they are much more efficient, affordable, secure, and easier to regulate due to the novel features of blockchain technology.

Parlaying off the success of DealBox, Carter's Fintech innovation team recently kicked off a better usability initiative with its "Make Crypto Easy" campaign.

Leading this campaign is flagship project, and DealBox issuer, Total Network Service Corp (TNS), is making the sending and receiving of cryptocurrency easier with its product Digital Names by allowing its users to create a simple, human-readable name to replace the long, alpha-numerical addresses used in digital wallets.

Story continues

Digital Names for cryptocurrency and digital wallets do what domain names did for the internet back in the 90s. Rather than remember a numerical IP address for a website, you can simply type in http://www.google.com and arrive at the desired destination.

The projected growth of this nascent industry is potentially larger than the Domain Name Service Industry, which currently grosses about $6 billion a year.

GoDaddy, one of the major DNS providers, has a market cap today of around $12 billion. This new industry and market opportunity will mint the next round of companies like this, of which Total Network Service is in position to take advantage of.

Most recently, TNS, under Carter's leadership, has been working closely with a consortium of telco and manufacturing companies on a stealth project aimed at delivering an interoperable solution that would bring an entirely new spectrum of networked communication between the traditional internet, blockchains, and IoT (Internet of Things) enabled devices.

Thomas Carter had this to say on the current state of the crypto market --

" The significance of the crypto space breaching $1 Trillion in market cap isn't so much the number as that certainly will fluctuate over time. I think the takeaway for investors and entrepreneurs is in realizing that the market cap milestone was fueled by institutional investment activity, which seems to validate the intrinsic value and utility of blockchain technology I've been evangelizing for the past several years.

Blockchain is truly novel. There are things you can do with blockchain that you just can't do with any other technology. The things you can do only with blockchain technology have one thing in common, and that is the empowerment of the individual and democratization of transactional activities, whether that be in logistics, finance, communications, etc.

My career focus has been on empowerment and providing value in the fintech space. The advent of blockchain tech has increased that capability 1000x and represents a generational disruption across all the industries that can benefit from distributed ledger technology. I'm excited to be among those leading the charge. "

Governments Supply-Chain Vulnerabilities and What to Do About Them – Governing

The recently exposed SolarWinds cybersecurity incident has highlighted something those of us in the information-security business have long worried about: that the supply chain is a black box most of us have very little visibility into. It is a vast and diverse aggregation of both physical and virtual components of almost impenetrable origin and complexity.

The opaque nature of this conglomeration of systems results in digital security vulnerabilities that very few organizations have even tried to fathom, yet unwittingly accept. That may be changing. Jennifer Bisceglie, CEO of the supply-chain resilience company Interos, spends a lot of time talking with government organizations about supply-chain issues. "Given the unprecedented wave of supply-chain shocks we witnessed in 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic, the SolarWinds cyberattack and the impact of escalating trade wars with China organizations are beginning to realize they need to devote more attention to supply-chain risk," she says.

Supply chains are the backbone of today's global economy, and any organization public or private that relies on one to accomplish its business goals is a player in supply-chain cybersecurity risk management. Cyber-enabled supply-chain attacks can now result in vastly disproportionate harm compared to the minimal resources required to execute an attack. The good news is that robust, ever-improving technology is available today to provide organizations with the tools to identify their extended supply chains and monitor their risk factors. But software is only one part of a strong risk-mitigation strategy.

People often think of the supply chain as the logistical framework for getting a physical product from point A to point B, including activities involved in the sourcing and conversion of products and the collaboration among suppliers, intermediaries and customers. But the exploding global digital transformation has altered supply-chain risks dramatically to include a mystifying accumulation of software code and application relationships that generate perplexing cybersecurity risk-management challenges.

Supply-chain cybersecurity is taking an increasingly prominent role in many organizations because divining the provenance of components and software, and the relationships between systems critical to government and business operations, is crucial to knowing how to protect those systems. "If an organization doesn't understand which third parties have access to its network and present the greatest risk to its data, its digital ecosystem becomes a ticking time bomb just waiting to be exploited," says Fred Kneip, CEO of the security software company CyberGRX. This is especially true for government organizations where citizen privacy is at risk and in those sectors of the economy from energy to communications to water systems that are designated as essential critical infrastructure.

Supply-chain cybersecurity risk management is focused on the threats to disrupt, degrade or destroy IT systems, software and network infrastructure. Cyber-related disruptions can impact all of the multi-tier organizational relationships in the supply chain. What happened to the Maersk shipping company is instructive. Maersk is responsible for 20 percent of the world's shipping capacity, and when it was infected with the NotPetya malware in 2017, its 800-ship fleet, which is supported by 80,000 employees in 574 offices across 130 countries, was quite literally dead in the water. That was bad news for Maersk of course, but even worse news for the millions of customers who depend on the company for fresh and frozen food products, raw materials for manufacturing and products destined for the retail market.

A 2017 Wired article highlighted several other examples of hackers exploiting the digital supply chain, including one case in which a fake version of an Apple developer tool popular with Chinese app-builders resulted in the (at the time) largest-ever outbreak of malware on Apple devices.

And in October 2018, Bloomberg Businessweek raised the specter of a long-feared hardware attack on the supply chain, reporting that spy chips that could be used to alter or steal data had been discovered on components supplied by a Chinese subcontractor to Supermicro, a major U.S. supplier of servers and motherboards.

While all of the companies involved disputed the Bloomberg report, the value of Supermicro's stock dropped by more than 40 percent. For the public sector, the risks are far greater, bringing the potential for disruptions to everything from public health and safety to essential infrastructure. So what can your government organization do to understand and mitigate supply-chain cybersecurity risks? Some essential steps:

Map your supply chain and identify high-priority vendors most critical to your organization's ability to function.

Identify sub-tier suppliers whose critical IT components or software are embedded in your systems.

Create diversity in your supply chain so you don't have any single-point-of-failure vendors.

Know, without a doubt, what information systems your vendors can access via your own networks.

Establish baseline security controls to which you can hold all of your vendors accountable. To identify potential insider threats, make sure these security controls encompass their personnel employment practices.

Ensure that your organization's security team is integrated into the procurement process, including vendor assessments and vendor management.

John McAfee, the founder of the security software company that bears his name, is known for making wild and outlandish statements. But he hit the nail on the head when he said that "any logical structure that humans can conceive will be susceptible to hacking, and the more complex the structure, the more certain that it can be hacked." Our global supply-chain infrastructure is perhaps one of the most complex digital organisms to ever evolve, and government organizations need to be proactively diligent in recognizing the cybersecurity risks it presents.

Governing's opinion columns reflect the views of their authors and not necessarily those of Governing's editors or management.

Software creator McAfee remanded in jail in Spain – Deccan Herald

A top court in Spain on Thursday remanded in custody anti-virus software creator John McAfee pending a decision on his extradition to the United States where he is wanted for tax evasion.

The 75-year-old has been held at a prison near Barcelona since he was arrested in the Spanish city in October just as he was about to board a flight to Istanbul.

His arrest followed his indictment in June in the United States for tax evasion and wilful failure to file tax returns between 2014 and 2018, despite earning millions from consulting work, crypto-currencies and selling the rights to his life story.

If convicted, he could face up to 30 years in prison.

Spain's National Court rejected McAfee's appeal against his remand in custody, arguing that given the lengthy prison sentences he is facing there was a "serious risk" he would seek to escape justice as he has in the past.

His wife Janice has said on Twitter that he is "not doing well" and had faced delays in getting "proper medical care" in prison but the court said he had "ailments which are typical for his age" and was getting treated.

Since making a fortune with his eponymous antivirus software in the 1980s that still bears his name, McAfee has become a self-styled crypto-currency guru.

He has one million followers on Twitter, where he describes himself as a "lover of women, adventure and mystery".

McAfee made headlines after he moved to Belize and his neighbour in the Central American country was mysteriously murdered in 2012, a crime that remains unsolved.

When the police found him living with a 17-year-old girl and discovered a large arsenal of weapons in his home, McAfee disappeared on a month-long flight.

The dead neighbour's family later filed a wrongful death suit against McAfee and last year a court in Florida found against him, ordering him to pay the family more than $25 million.

In 2015, McAfee was arrested in the United States for driving under the influence. He again disappeared from view until January 2019, when he fled the country.
