Chinese bidders buy three overseas islands via auction

In an unusual auction, four islands in Fiji, Greece, Britain and Canada were put up for sale on Chinas largest online shopping platform Taobao with three of them being sold within 12 hours. Any Chinese citizen who put up a 1,000 yuan ($159) deposit was qualified to bid.

Starting at 10 am (local time) on Wednesday, at least 48 bidders took part in the auction. Except for the UK property, which had a starting price of 4 million yuan and was not sold, the other three islands had a starting price of only 1 yuan.

The island in Fiji was sold with 99-year rental property rights while the others were sold freehold, staterun China Daily reported. When the auction ended at 10 pm on Wednesday, a construction magnate in Yunnan province had bought the islands in Greece and Canada for 4.8 million yuan and 1.7 million yuan, respectively.

A businessman in Zhejiang province bought the island in Fiji for 5 million yuan, according to Beijingbased Ilongterm, the real estate firm that held the auction.

We chose to work with Taobao as a strategic partner, because it is undoubtedly the most influential online shopping platform in China right now. Our bidders in this auction were longtime users of Taobao who have spent about 10 million yuan on it so far, Ilongterm said.

Ilongterm will take the winning bidders to their islands for onsite inspections and the completion of procedures such as paying taxes, commissions and legal expenses.

The company will also offer more overseas properties by auction on Taobao later this month and in May.

Taobao started auctions for overseas properties on December 12.

We are catering to rising demand for overseas properties among these groups. Were sure to offer more such projects in the future, said Taobao in a written reply.

According to Lin Dong, founder of the China Island Owners Association, wealthy Chinese have shown growing interest in overseas islands in recent years. Islands in China come with many restrictions on their use and just 50 years of ownership. But most overseas islands are sold freehold.

Development boom for Tiwi Islands

Development is continuing at full pace on the Tiwi Islands where the government hopes a soon-to-be-completed port and new agricultural and tourism land leases will make the remote Aboriginal community an example for the whole Northern Territory.

On Thursday Chief Minister Adam Giles announced a new agreement had been signed with the Tiwis to lease up to 10,0000 hectares for pastoral or agricultural use, 20 hectares for tourism, industrial and aquacultural projects, and 10 hectares of township land.

"This is an inspirational deal, unheard of I think in Australia, but particularly in the NT where significant leadership has come from the local people ... who have the foresight to pursue economic opportunities, who have the vision to look outside the square about the way things are done, but particularly have a focus on creating jobs," Mr Giles told reporters.

No leases have yet been signed for the new ventures, which locals hope will include oyster and fish farming.

Traditional owners will need to consent, and affected communities will have to be consulted before anything can go ahead.

Local member Francis Xavier Kurrupuwu said he was keen to see locals begin developing their own businesses on the two islands, about 80km North of Darwin, with a population of about 3000.

"We want to move away from welfare ... We want to encourage our young ones because they're our future," he said.

Mr Giles also toured the $50 million Port Melville, which is still under construction despite initial forecasts that it would start shipping woodchips to Japan early last year.

He said he expected that to happen by mid-year, and praised the foresight of locals and Singaporean port owner Ezion Holdings for considering the port for other uses, such as a marine supply base for the region's offshore oil and gas projects.

"The port's not going to be sustainable on woodchips alone," he said.

Adventure Life Announces Galapagos Islands Named Best Place For Wildlife

Missoula, Montana (PRWEB) March 05, 2015

The Galapagos Islands were recently named the Best Place For Wildlife by USA Today. The magazine had readers choose their favorite travel destinations, and the Galapagos came out on top in this category. Running against incredible places such as the Peruvian Amazon and Serengeti National Park, the Islands had some stiff competition. Adventure Life CEO & Founder, Brian Morgan, is a Travel+Leisure A-List Travel Advisor for the Galapagos, so this was especially exciting news for our company.

The article states, The Enchanted Isles off the coast of Ecuador inspired Darwins theory of evolution and are still home to some of the planets most unique endemic species. Visiting the Galapagos gives opportunities to snorkel with reef sharks, swim with playful sea lions, walk among blue-footed boobies, and observe land iguanas. Experience these things on one of our many Galapagos trip options.

As a company, we have been operating trips to the Galapagos for 15 years, says Adventure Life General Manager, Jonathan Brunger. We have known the magic of the Islands all along, and it is great that other world travelers are now recognizing it as well.
