British Columbia is an ideal location for anyone looking for a pristine and affordable island in a temperate climate. One of my favorite new islands to come on the market is Lizzies Cove Island. This is a magnificent 6.5 acre virgin forested island with a wide variety of trees including the rare yew trees and yellow cedar. The highest elevation is approximately 130 feet. There are many excellent building sites with almost 2 kilometers of ocean front.

The island is located on the inside passage. (Lama Passage/Lizzie’s Cove) You can watch the cruise ships and killer whales pass one side of the island. There is protected moorage on the other side. One or more families reside on Lizzie’s Cove. Take your boat up Lama Passage (30-40 minutes) to either the town of Bella Bella or world famous Shearwater Marine Resort. Bella Bella has a hospital, grocery store, fuel station, liquor store, post office and more. You can dine and be entertained at Shearwater Resort and Marina.

Recompression chambers are used to treat scuba divers suffering from cases of the bends. Visiting scuba divers will be comforted to know that both Fiji and French Polynesia have working recompression chambers in their main hospitals, and both have moved in the past year.

The London Evening Standard is the latest newspaper to discover Jumby Bay the exclusive Caribbean Resort that has been making waves among well heeled travelers around the world. The article notes that what makes Jumby Bay special is that it has the feel of a private island in the old school sense, because most of its accommodation is privately-owned, individually designed villas and estate houses, many with their own beaches, while the rest remain solely for the use of their owners. But then, it has 40 beautifully-designed hotel suites (28 of which are brand new) arranged along a stretch of white beach lapped by impossibly turquoise waters.

Comfort Island, located in Alexandria Bay, New York was built in 1883 by industrialist Alson E. Clark.

The island is located on the St. Lawrence River in the popular Thousand Islands Region in what is known as Millionaire’s row. Millionaire’s row is a series of islands developed by Gilded Age industrialists such as George Boldt (Boldt Castle) of the Waldorf Astoria and George Pullman (Castle Rest) of the Pullman Palace Car Co.

The region is dotted with Gilded age Castles such as Frederick Bourne’s Dark Island/Singer Castle (Singer Sewing Machine) and W.O. Wyckoff’s Carleton Island Villa (Remington Typewriter). Comfort Island is one of the earliest of the large estates and the only known to be still owned by the original family. A son of the builder of the estate, Alson Skinner Clark, a well known impressionist, painted many works in, on, and of the structure throughout his life that still remain as they were from the early part of the century

Australian newspaper the Mercury is reporting on a new island for sale in Australia. The uninhabitat Tasmanian island can be yours for just $1.65M,

According to the aritcle your only neighbours on the reportedly snake-free 58ha island in Norfolk Bay will be muttonbirds, quail, native hens and a few blue-tongue lizards. Smooth Island is convenient too. It’s a short boat ride from Dunalley and less than an hour’s drive from Hobart and the city’s international airport.

The article also notes that it’s not the first Tasmanian island for sale. In 2003, buyers could choose from Swan Island in Bass Strait, Garden Island near Cygnet and Ram Island off the East Coast.

Artificial islands are being proposed as a means to help halt the effects of the oil spill in the Gulf Coast. As news surfaced that the giant cap meant to contain the spill failed, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal announced his own plan to save the coastline from mass amounts of incoming oil. Jindal is proposing “strengthening” a line of delicate barrier islands 10 miles off the coast of Louisiana by dumping dredged materials in the gaps of water that stretch between the small pieces of land. He hopes his plan would stop oil from reaching the marshlands on the coast of Louisiana.

There is no shortage of islands in the thousand islands, however an island with Victorian Mansion in New York is rare. The Economic Times published a great article on the advantageous of renting a private island. The article notes that unlike many other things that the rich like to indulge in, private islands come in short supply and are finite. The article also acknowldge  that  islands are in very short supply, and they are not increasing—what’s existing now is the only supply.

The most precious of them are in the Caribbean and the US Virgin Islands. Billionaires own them, but you can experience the life for a while. The good news is that most of such owners, who include people like Richard Branson, are ready to rent them out. You can also get the island where Marlon Brando lived for years in rustic fashion on Tetiaroa in French Polynesia.

The article makes a point of acknowledging that renting an entire private island is not in everyone’s budget and recommends renting part of an island. “Castles with six or more bedrooms, and those with a celeb touch to it fetch around $2000 a night”. The properties that cost more are like the castle where actress Gwyneth Paltrow got married, but still they are much more affordable.

Hollywood couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie rented an entire island so that their six children could celebrate Easter in peace. Brangelina, as they are called by the tabloids, took their children to the Venetian island of San Servolo for a day of Easter activities. “From now on that island will fetch a higher rent,” says Pande, which might work out to around $200,000 for just one week.
