Yugoslavia and Italy. In November 1943, the "Ostmanische SS-Division" was formed comprising of three separate eastern groups: Turkistan, Idel-ural and Crimea. Reichsf #1100;hrer Himmler was very interested in this Eastern SS formation because his intent was to utilize some of the cadre personal for a training unit with the hope of raising further Eastern volunteer units. Because of volunteer shortages the unit was later designated as "1. Ostmusselmanisches SS-Regiment" in July 1944. Finaly by October 1944, with more volunteers and conscriptions it was re-named as the "Ost Turkischer Waffen-Verband der SS. By November 1941, Legions were created from Asiatic and Caucasians in southern Russia. These Legionnaires were from Armenia, Azerbaijan, North Caucasus, Turkistan and the Volga Tatar. Again many of the volunteers saw the Germans as liberators of their homeland. The Legionnaires were trained in Poland and Germany. Because of the high combat casualties that the Waffen-SS had suffered in the Eastern Front, these Eastern troops were transferred to the Waffen-SS by 1944-45. These Legionnaires wore either German or Russian uniforms. Most of the Legionnaires were transferred to occupational duties on the Western Front in such places as the Channel Islands and France. These Legionnaires were disappointed and dismayed because they wanted to fight the communist. PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos (AP) The Turks and Caicos Islands prepared to govern itself for the first time in three years as the British territory voted Friday for a new government.

The election marked the end of Britain's three-year direct rule over the territory following an inquiry into rampant corruption that led to the 2009 resignation of former jet-setting Premier Michael Misick. He had angered many with his lavish lifestyle that included two private jets on call and a Hollywood actress wife, but islanders in recent years began demanding that Britain give back the reins to a local government.

"It is good to know that we are returning to controlling our own affairs," said 21-year-old hotel waiter Rico Forbes. "Today would be the day. I am really thankful."

He was among dozens of voters trickling into polling stations to choose a premier and 15 legislators for Parliament.

Among the 37 candidates running for office is Dr. Rufus Ewing of the Progressive National Party, who is seeking to become the island's premier. He's running against former Premier Oswald Skippings of the People's Democratic Movement.

William Hague, Britain's foreign secretary, said he believes the Turks and Caicos Islands has a solid enough foundation to return to an elected government.

"This is a significant step," he said. "(The election) heralds the islands' return to a democratic government."

Britain took control of the territory in August 2009 following a corruption inquiry that uncovered Misick's lavish spending after taking office in 2003. Misick has denied any wrongdoing and remains a fugitive. He's believed to be living in the Dominican Republic. At least 13 people had been charged with corruption, and British investigators recovered about $12 million in assets and 900 acres of land.

In 2011, the Turks and Caicos Islands received a $417 million bailout from the U.K., and the government is currently operating on a budget that Britain hopes will lead to a $20 million surplus next year. The island had a $26 million deficit this past fiscal year, which Britain said was an improvement from the $70 million deficit the previous year.

On Thursday, the island's first auditor general was appointed to lead the newly formed audit office. However, Britain will retain significant control over the island's public finances, a reality that still bothers many.

Any plans to remove funding for the 42-year-old air service to the Aran Islands could spark an irreversible decline in the population of the islands, it has been claimed.

Residents on the three islands Inis Mr, Inis Mein, and Inis Orr are planning a campaign to save the service, amid speculation that the public service obligation (PSO) funding to maintain it is to be withdrawn.

Provided by the Department of Arts, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht, the funding amounts to just under 2m a year.

It provides for three daily return flights by Aer Arann to Inis Mr and two daily return flights to Inis Mein and to Inis Orr on weekdays, with four return flights on weekends.

Additional flights are also provided depending on demand. In addition, a separate contract is in place with Bainistocht Aerfoirt Teo, a subsidiary of Aer Arann Islands, to manage the three aerodromes on the islands.

Although the department has declined to confirm or deny that the funding is to be withdrawn in the budget, residents on the islands believe the decision has been all but rubber-stamped. While there is a ferry service, islanders have stressed the importance of the air link, particularly in winter time.

Ruair de Blacam, who owns and runs Inis Mein Restaurant and Suites, said the air service was a necessary lifeline for employment, business, health, and the future of the islands.

"There was no consultation with islanders on this and no debate on whether savings could be made on the ground rather than cutting the funding. The service is probably considered a luxury by ministers sitting in Leinster House, who only make it down to the West of Ireland when the sun is shining. For those of us living here all year round it is a necessary lifeline."

Thursday November 08, Walter Krepling Memorial Service KREPLING, Walter Jr. (Walt) - July 23, 1921 to November 3, 2012 Walt Krepling grew up in South Ozone Park in the borough of Queens, NY where he excelled at baseball and basketball. As a member of Mike Nelson #39;s Richmond Hill Dodgers in the Queens-Nassau Baseball Alliance, Walt ran up a 27 game hit streak. Walt was invited to Spring Training by the Brooklyn Dodgers, but the war intervened. Walt joined the Army Air Corps, and, after significant amounts of basic training followed by flight training, qualified for assignment as a copilot of a B-17 bomber. On November 16, 1943 Walt flew in his first combat mission out of Tunis, North Africa with a group of 98 other B-17s headed for Le Tube France. They successfully bombed the target but ran into significant flak and 15 or more ME 109 fighter airplanes. Walt soon was promoted to pilot and flew many missions where he was responsible for the men and the airplane. By May 6, 1944 (less than six months) Walt had completed 51 missions and was proud to say that he had brought the men and the airplane home each and every time. (Sometimes pretty banged up) Walt moved on to the Pacific Theater where he served as part of the Second Emergency Rescue Squadron based at Palawan in the Philippine Islands before becoming the personal pilot for Major General Paul Wurtsmith, Commander of the Thirteenth Air Force for the last part of his military career.
