CRUZ BAY, St. John (Reuters) - The tiny island of St. John is the smallest, most pristine of the U.S. Virgin Islands, with two-thirds of its land mass given over to national parkland thanks to a 1956 donation from philanthropist-conservationist Laurance Rockefeller.
The verdant, volcanic isle attracts all sorts of outdoor enthusiasts, from hikers and scuba divers to beach lovers and sun worshippers, while steering clear of major development, fast-food chains and hordes of tourists seeking out raucous bars.
But there is no airport, so visitors must arrive by boat - either ferries, which run hourly, or private charter.
Eco-travelers saddened by the recent announcement that St. John's popular Maho Bay Camps will shutter in May, can still stay at its sister eco-resort, Concordia (http://www.concordiaeco-resort.com/), on the island's south side.
Reuters correspondents with local knowledge help you get the most out a short stay on this island paradise - whether it's your first or 40th visit.
FRIDAY
6 p.m. - After flying into St. Thomas, visitors heading to St. John will need to take a taxi to the ferry docks at either Charlotte Amalie or Red Hook, which is more popular because of its hourly departures (www.varlack-ventures.com). Once on St. John, pick up your pre-reserved rental car in Cruz Bay, unless you don't plan to leave the beach. Taxis are pricey and you'll want wheels to see the most of this bucolic isle.
Check in, or get settled at your weekend rental. While the Westin is the lone major resort (www.westinresortstjohn.com/), various short-stay options include condos, guest houses, villas and the luxurious yet rustic favorite of honeymooners, Caneel Bay (http://www.rosewoodhotels.com/en/caneelbay/).
8 p.m. - Time for dinner. "It feels absolutely fantastic," Faroe Islands coach Jn Pauli Olsen said after they made progress from the FIFA Women's World Cup preliminary round the first time one of their national teams have ever gone through a stage at any level.
In Vilnius for Group B in their maiden World Cup entry, they drew 3-3 with fellow debutants Montenegro, Heidi Sevdal equalising twice, before the Faroes beat hosts Lithuania 1-0 and Georgia 2-1 to win the section. They now await the qualifying group stage draw on Tuesday, where they will learn their five top-level opponents for a year of home and away games starting in September.
"We have trained for this for half a year," Olsen said. "It's absolutely fantastic that we have succeeded." He was confident after holding a strong Montenegro side. "Already after that match, we had high hopes of making progress," Olsen added.
In the third and decisive match against Georgia, where a draw was all his charges needed, the tactics were first and foremost to keep a clean sheet, the coach said. "And then we knew that over 90 minutes we would get our chances on the counterattack. And we did, so I think it went as planned."
Sevdal scored four of the Faroes' six goals and made the other two adding to her superb start to the domestic season where she has seven goals from two HB Trshavn matches so far. Olsen described her as "a fantastic player" and went on: "We have been good at getting her in positions where she gets to run one-on-one against other players, and there she is extremely strong. I think she has played a fantastic tournament together with many others."
Also standing out in the Faroe Islands team is the unique mother and daughter combination of Bra and Eydvr Klakstein. The 19-year-old Eydvr shone, named player of the match against Montenegro, and Olsen said: "She really made the breakthrough."
After Tuesday's draw, they will take on top-tier opposition for the first time, with Germany among their possible rivals. "You want to meet the big ones," Olsen said. "That's where it's best to be."
Heavy defeats will be taken in his stride. "If you want to play football at a high level, you'll have to take that," the coach explained. "But we will be doing our very best to get as good results as possible."

The Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) revealed that there are more than 1,300 Saudi islands scattered along the Kingdoms coastline in the Red Sea and the Arabia Gulf, across 3,800 kilometers. The continental shelf led to the formation of a variety of small and large islands, situation above sea level in the formation of rocks. These islands differ in origin and composition, however the vast majority are coral, while the remaining are desert, continental and volcanic islands. Most of the islands along the Saudi coastline are flat, while some islands in the Red Sea are above sea level with highlands such as Tiran Island at 581 meters above sea level, Sanafir and Yabua islands at 112 meters above sea level. The director of the SGS said that the majority of those 1300 islands are uninhabited due to their tough natural composition and climatic conditions as well as the lack of economic resources, with the exception of Farasan, Sajid Islands and Qummah Islands in Red Sea, in addition to Tarout, Abu Ali and Qannah Islands in the Arabian Gulf, which are inhabited by a small population size.

The town council on Little Bay Islands has started preparing the paperwork for a new vote on resettlement.
The push to relocate the 70 residents of the town is picking up steam, thanks in large part to the provincial budget.
In March, the province increased the amount of money it would offer to families who wanted to relocate to larger areas from $100,000 to $270,000.
"Before, they were saying 'no, we wasn't going, we wasn't going,' " said Dennis Budgell, a Little Bay Islands councillor.
"But when the government come up with this new amount of money, they said 'at least now we goes, we got money to go and buy a new home somewhere else.'
"I can understand that. I can understand the people who don't want to leave, too."
The remaining residents of Little Bay Islands are mostly seniors, with only a handful of people in the community working. And there is only one child in the local school.
The town is accessible only by ferry, which makes for many lonely crossings.
"You go outdoors now, you can walk this town all you like, and you won't see nobody," said Budgell. "No one on the roads, no young people left, nothing."
Budgell spearheaded an effort for resettlement in 2011, after the community's fish plant closed.

Pursuing real tax havens such as Caribbean Islands and the U.S. state of Delaware at the level of the Group of 20 countries is more important than criticizing Austria, which will push back to protect its banking secrecy laws, Austrian finance minister Maria Fekter said Friday.
"The G-20 never, never accepted the information exchange [for bank accounts] and they never did any step to close the money laundering in all the islands, like the Cayman islands, the Virgin islands or [in] the U.S. in Delaware," she told reporters at a meeting of European Union finance ministers in Dublin.
It isn't acceptable putting "pressure on small countries and their traditions, even on those countries who are fulfilling all the OECD standards," she said, referring to the standards of the grouping of industrialized countries the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Austria "never has, and never will," be on a blacklist as a tax haven, she said, hitting back at critics as her country becomes increasingly isolated in a EU drive to clamp down on tax evasion and fraud.
Five countries including the U.K., France and Germany, have pushed the issue of bank secrecy to the top of the EU economic agenda as governments struggle to find cash. They've written to the European Commission pressing for a broader agreement on finding tax evaders by automatically exchanging information about accounts.
"We do not want automatic exchange of account data, like these five powers are calling for, it's not just names and account numbers, but also bank balances," she said. "That alone, that all account transactions would be exchanged, means I stand firm once more--we will not go into this data cemetery."
Irish Finance Minister Michael Noonan, said earlier he hopes to "commence the conversation" on Europe tightening the rules on tax information exchange during the informal meeting here. Ireland is hosting the talks in its role as holder of the EU's rotating presidency. Mr. Noonan said the discussion would look at how measures on tax information exchange "can be further formalized."
Ms. Fekter said that while Austria does not have a problem with certain exchanges under specific conditions, the ideas are currently far too vague.
"Where we will push back, is where the impact on our position regarding data exchange and banking secrecy is not clearly defined," she said. "The formulation here is not clear enough... Luxembourg is criticizing that and so are we."

As ice caps melt and sea levels rise, islands around the world could eventually become completely submerged, like real-world cities of Atlantis.
Scientists have determined that the tides could consume low-lying islands in the next 50 to 150 years. But they'll become uninhabitable well before they're underwater, and that day might not be in the too distant future.
A study by the U.S. Geological Survey released yesterday finds that the two northwestern Hawaiian atolls of Midway and Laysan and Pacific islands like them could become inundated and unfit to live on during this century.
A fierce storm in 2008 drew researchers' attention to the issue of overwash, where ocean water comes ashore, damages property and natural resources but doesn't permanently submerge the island. On islands that are less than a thousand feet long and where fresh water turns brackish less than a dozen feet deep, overwash can have a crippling effect.
"If you have an overwash event, all of a sudden, you're salinating that fresh water; you basically kill the agriculture due to salt loading, and if you get [salt concentrations] over a few parts per thousand, it's no longer fit for human consumption," said Curt Storlazzi, a research oceanographer at the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center and lead author of the study.
"You may have an island, but without fresh water and agriculture, you can't live there, anyway," he added. "It's like, do you care that in 100 years your house will be underwater? Or do you care that in 20 or 30 years ocean water is going to come through the side of your house a couple times every year?"
Not drowned, but uninhabitable To measure sea-level rise, scientists have historically used passive "bathtub" models that flood a given area in a concentric range. To better understand the effects of overwash, USGS used dynamic modeling that takes into account storm winds and wave activity coupled with sea-level rise of between 0.5 and 2 meters (1.6 and 6.5 feet).
