AMD Launching 'Volcanic Islands' GPUs in 2013

AMD's next generation "Volcanic Islands" GPUs will be arriving later this year.

Rage3D recently went on a tour of AMDs Austin Campus and sat down with the companys CPU Architect, Jim Keller, and its Business Transformation Officer (BTO), Checkib Akrout. The discussion covered the company's future plans, its new CPU architectures, and provided the long awaited confirmation that the Volcanic Islands GPUs will arrive this year.

The Sea Islands codename encompasses the PS4 chip, as well as the new mobile chips announced at CES, and the Bonaire GPU found in the Radeon HD 7790. I bring this up because it shows the people inside AMD continue to work hard, long hours to deliver great products amongst the turmoil shown in the press.

The next generation of graphics cards -- Volcanic Islands -- is coming this year and shaping up nicely. When you name products after places, it leads to interesting thoughts about where to hold events surrounding that namesake product. Typically places that are cheap to get travel to internationally for a worldwide congregation are preferred, so I'm off to renew my passport on the off chance I'm headed to Reykjavik later this summer. But I sure as hell wouldn't complain about being sent to Honolulu, either.

Avoid gaming bottlenecks and keep your system balanced with the latest information abou...

China reiterates sovereignty over Diaoyu islands

Beijing, May 9 (IANS) China has reiterated its claim over disputed Diaoyu islands, stating that they are its "inherent territory".

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said Wednesday that the Diaoyu island and its affiliated islets were part of China's inherent territory and had never been part of Liuqiu or Okinawa, reported Xinhua.

The ministry reacted after the People's Daily, the flagship newspaper of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Wednesday published an article --"On the Treaty of Shimonoseki and the Diaoyu Islands Issue" -- which discusses Japanese sovereignty over Okinawa island.

On Sunday, Chinese ships had carried out their routine patrolling around the disputed islands that are also claimed by Japan.

The islands are called "Diaoyu" in China but "Senkaku" in Japan. The row over the islands, which are presently controlled by Japan, has left ties between Tokyo and Beijing highly tense.

Japan claims to be occupying the islands since 1895, while China maintains the islands were recognised as Chinese territory as early as 1783.

Pacific's Marshall Islands facing drought emergency

MAJURO, Marshall Islands: A drought has left areas of the Marshall Islands facing "dire" water shortages with aid agencies scrambling to ship relief to affected communities, officials in the Pacific nation said Wednesday.

With almost no rainfall since late last year on some of the northern islands, the government this week issued a disaster declaration as villages began rationing water to preserve supplies.

"We've got 3,700 people without drinking water, the situation is dire," national water advisor Tom Vance said on Wednesday following a trip to Mejit Island.

Health officials said water tanks were running low and water from wells had turned brackish, making it unsafe to drink. Without rain, the only other source of liquid for the islanders is coconuts.

"The situation is increasingly desperate if this drought persists in the northern islands and atolls," said Chief Secretary Casten Nemra, who is heading the emergency relief program.

The United States and Australian governments this week announced $100,000 in emergency aid grants, with the US also donating four reverse osmosis water-making units which are expected to arrive in the next few days.

The Marshall Islands government said it hoped to buy more of the units and send a ship to the disaster zone carrying 450 collapsible water containers filled to capacity.

Nemra said the drought had severely damaged local food crops and there were health fears for the population, with cases of diarrhoea, conjunctivitis, influenza and other illnesses already being reported.

"The northern Marshall Islands is under incredible level of hardship and reports indicate that conditions will get worse in the coming days," he said. -AFP

Outrage as Euro MPs argue Britain's sovereignty over Falkland Islands 'is not accepted'

British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands as such, is not accepted by EU lawmakers

The Falklands issue was brought up at a recent meeting in Buenos Aires by Senator Daniel Filmus, who insisted the UK and Argentina must discuss the long-standing tension over the islands.

During talks, Senator Filmus suggested to his peers that an additional effort to help Argentina establish talks with the UK on the Malvinas issue would be beneficial.

To advance in the strengthening of the accords it would be beneficial if the EU would commit itself to help so that the UK sits at a table to dialogue bilaterally on the Malvinas question said Filmus.

He added that the diplomatic path is the only path we conceive and we stress this position in support of dialogue in all the international forums we participate.

British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands has been dismissed by Euro MPs

MEP Yaez Barnuevo

Senator Filmus even claimed that the UK is taking advantage of the Falkland Islands dispute to "militarize" the South Atlantic and to extract natural resources that belong to the region.

There is a growing consensus related to this issue and its that both sides must sit to discuss it.
