Some of the striking landscapes of Ecuador's Galapagos islands can now be explored online on Google Street View.
The launch marks the 178th anniversary of the British scientist Charles Darwin's visit, which inspired his theory of natural selection.
The high-definition 360 degrees pictures are a joint project between Google, the Galapagos National Park and the Darwin Foundation.
The pictures were taken with a special backpack camera during 10 days in May.
Many of the animals seen by Darwin in his 1835 voyage were captured on camera by Google staff.
Camera crews dived with sea-lions, trekked on the islands' biggest volcano and accompanied a leafy meal of the famous giant tortoises.
Viewers can also have a taste of less famous Galapagos wildlife, including marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies and Frigatebirds.
As in other Street View projects, you can zoom in and out and move around the images.
"The natural history of this archipelago is very remarkable: it seems to be a little world within itself," Darwin said after visiting the islands.

Google in partnership with Galapagos National Park Directorate and the Charles Darwin Foundation on Thursday added brand-new, 360-degree images from the isolated volcanic islands to Street View.
"Now, you can visit the islands from anywhere you may be, and see many of the animals that Darwin experienced on his historic and groundbreaking journey in 1835," Raleigh Seamster, project lead for Google Earth Outreach, wrote in a blog post. "The extensive Street View imagery of the Galapagos Islands will not only allow armchair travelers to experiences the islands from their desktop computer, but it will also play an instrumental role in the ongoing research of the environment, conservation, animal migration patterns, and the impact of tourism on the islands."
Alongside the new Street View imagery, the Charles Darwin Foundation and iNaturalist, a website for citizen scientists, launched a new interactive Web project on Thursday called Darwin for a Day. The site lets you "step into Darwin's shoes by exploring the Galapagos Islands through Google Street View and document its unique plants and animals," Seamster wrote.
When you're looking around on the site and come across an interesting plant or animal, you can enter your best guess as to what it is and your observations will be shared with the iNaturalist community and CDF to contribute to research of the Galapagos.
The imagery has been in the work for months. The Google Street View team used Trekker, a 40-pound wearable backpack with a 15-camera system on top, to capture 360-degree views of the lush islands back in May. The Galapagos faces threats like invasive species, climate change, and other human impacts, making the documentation of island wildlife and vegetation more important than ever, Google said in May.
"We captured imagery from 10 locations," Google said. "We walked past giant tortoises and blue-footed boobies, navigated through steep trails and lava fields, and picked our way down the crater of an active volcano called Sierra Negra."
The islands are home to hundreds of wildlife species found nowhere else on the planet. The unique biodiversity of the islands inspired Charles Darwin to devise his theory of evolution following a visit to the Galapagos aboard the HMS Beagle in 1832.

BEIJING, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- China has warned Japan to avoid provocative action over a clutch of uninhabited Islands in the latest war of words concerning the disputed East China Sea territory.
China's Foreign Ministry expressed "grave concern" over comments by Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga that Tokyo may station officials on the islands, known as Senkaku to the Japanese and Diaoyu in China.
China maintains the islands are its territory although they and the waters close around them have been under Japanese control for about 40 years.
China's official Xinhua News Agency quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei as saying China won't tolerate actions that violate its territorial sovereignty.
Hong urged Japan to "stop all provocative actions that undermine China's sovereignty" and "eliminate obstacles for improving bilateral relations."
Tension between Beijing and Tokyo has been high since Japan bought three of the five uninhabited islands from their private Japanese owner in September 2012.
The islands lie about 100 miles north of Japan's Ishigaki Island and about 115 miles northeast of Taiwan.
At the end of World War II the islands were under U.S. jurisdiction as part of the captured Japanese island of Okinawa. Japan has administered them since 1972 when Okinawa was returned to Japan.
The Japanese Cabinet secretary's comments come as seven Chinese patrol ships entered waters around the islands this week -- the latest of many incursions in the area, the Japanese coast guard said.

TOKYO, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Japan's top Cabinet secretary said Tuesday the country may station officials on desolate islands at the center of a territorial dispute with China.
The two countries have been battling over five uninhabited islands, known as Senkaku by Japan and Diaoyu in China, in the East China Sea.
The fight over the islands has escalated since Japan bought three of the islands from their private owner last year.
Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga's comments came as seven Chinese patrol ships entered waters around the islands, which is the latest of many incursions in the area, the Japanese coast guard said.
Japan also spotted a drone flying in the vicinity Monday.
Japan has not confirmed what country controlled the unmanned aircraft, but has approached China about the incident, The New York Times reported.
Suga said Tuesday Japan is prepared to make a calm response to defend its territory.
"Our country will never make a concession on the matter of sovereignty," he added.
Strategists have warned that an attempt to forcibly control the islands could lead to an escalation of the conflict, the Times said.

Germany dominated their match against the Faroe Islands, though only managed to score three goals against a defensively stubborn opposition. It leaves them five points clear of Sweden at the top of Group C, and able to clinch promotion with a win against the Republic of Ireland next month.
The German onslaught started inside five minutes, when Sami Khedira fired wide of the far post from inside the area, before Mesut zil's low cross from the left was diverted up onto the crossbar. A quick counterattack from the hosts saw Manuel Neuer called into action for the first -- and pretty much only -- time in the first half, with Pol Johannus Justinussen's speculative effort requiring a tip over the bar.
There were gaping holes in the Faroe Islands defence, and only a one-on-one save on Miroslav Klose kept the scores level after 11 minutes. Playing as Germany's main central striker, Klose had several chances to break the deadlock throughout the first half, and hit the post after 22 minutes from a low cross from the right.
Despite the German domination, the Faroe Islands managed to keep the deficit down to a respectable one goal by the halftime whistle, and it stayed that way for most of the second half. Defending with 10 men behind the ball, Germany struggled to break through, with Julian Draxler, Khedira and zil all squandering half-chances.
It took a penalty with just over 15 minutes remaining before the visitors finally managed to kill the game off. It was telling that the chance came on a rare German counterattack, when they managed to catch the Faroese defence high up the pitch. Thomas Mller slipped in behind and was brought down when clean through by Atli Gregersen. The defender was promptly sent off, and zil converted from the spot.
Germany added a third soon after, when Mller poked in from inside the area. That was how the game ended, with Neuer barely tested at all throughout the 90 minutes. However, the islanders managed to keep the score down to a respectable 3-0 with just 10 men, and won't be too unhappy.
