Vietnam Plans Five Youth Islands By 2020

HANOI, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- Five islands in Vietnam will be developed into youth islands by 2020 under a newly approved project, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.

The islands are Tran Island (Co To district, northeast Quang Ninh province), Hon Chuoi Island (Tran Van Thoi district, southern Ca Mau province), Tho Chau Island (Phu Quoc district, southern Kien Giang province), Bach Long Vi Island (northern city of Hai Phong), and Con Co Island in central Quang Tri province.

The project will focus on building infrastructure, protecting ecological environment, developing the cultural, health and education sectors as well as ensuring defence and security on the islands.

Its aim is to encourage young people and families to act as pioneers to exploit the potential of Vietnam's seas and islands and to build a sustainable household economy on the islands.

As district or commune-level administrative units, the islands will be built under the new-style rural model.

Solomon Islands Opens Diplomatic Mission In New Zealand

The Solomon Islands Government has opened a new diplomatic mission in Wellington, New Zealand which began operations on Monday 13th, January, 2014.

The opening of the Mission fulfills the countrys foreign relations policy of broadening its presence in strategic locations abroad as well as enhancing relations with a close Pacific neighbor and development partner New Zealand.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Clay Forau Soalaoi welcomed the establishment of the New Zealand Mission saying he is pleased that the mission is finally operational.

Maintaining a physical presence in Wellington will increase Solomon Islands links and connection with both the Government and private sector of New Zealand, Minister Forau said.

Prior to the establishment of the Office, Solomon Islands had maintained an Honorary Consul Office in Auckland, from 1994 to 2004.

The current Government, however, recognized the strategic importance and need to elevate its physical presence in New Zealand and committed to opening a mission last year.

New Zealand is considered an important development partner of Solomon Islands and will continue to remain a strong partner in the future.

While the SI-NZ partnership is often viewed from a development aid perspective, there is greater potential for Solomon Islands to benefit fully from its relation with New Zealand, particularly, in the trade and investment sector.

Having a Government office in New Zealand will contribute towards achieving benefits from this relationship.

In this regard, the successful implementation of the Recognized Seasonal Employers Scheme (RSE) is an example of the enormous potentials anticipated to be derived from the PACER-Plus arrangement.

Seoul, Beijing push back on Japan over disputed islands

TOKYO, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- China and South Korea both chastised Japan Friday after Tokyo reiterated its claims on a string of contested islands.

Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said in a speech to the parliament that Japan was maintaining its claim on the so-called Dokdo islands in the East China Sea, which prompted a stiff response from the South Koreans and Chinese, who also claim jurisdiction over the tiny islands.

"Such groundless claims and useless attempts repeated over time only show the world that Japan is still under the spell of imperialism," the South Korean foreign ministry said in a written statement. The ministry said the hard-line attitude of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government was needlessly belligerent, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency said.

China currently maintains control of the islands and recently announced the formation of an air-defense identification zone over the region that barred other nations from flying through without permission.

"It is just and legitimate for China to set up the ADIZ, about which Japan is not entitled to criticize," a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman told Japan's Kyodo News.
