Pacific islands package lethargy like few other places. Encased in sluggish heat and a warm ocean, they're typically places where doing nothing can feel like doing everything. But what happens when doing nothing isn't enough?

Crawl off the beach towel and there are opportunities on many Pacific islands for particular, and often unique, adventure activities.

Here's our pick of the adventures in paradise.

Lava Flows from Fogo in the Cape Verde Islands Bury Two Towns

It is clear now that the ongoing eruption at Fogo in the Cape Verde Islands is not sparing the towns in the Cha de Caldieras area. There had been some indications that the eruption was slowing and that the town of Portello and Bangaeiracould be saved, but as of December 8, it appears that much of the settlement is being overrun by lava flowsand the lava continues to flow at close to 300 meters per day.

The eruption regained vigor over the weekend, and the security teams near the volcano had to withdraw to safe distances. Close to 90 percent of the town is now covered by the lava from the new eruption (compare this to the lava during the recent Pahoa crisis in Hawaii, which received many, many times more coverage in the mainstream media). Right now, close to 1,200people who had to evacuate likely do not have a home to which to return. Even if their home survived, much of the infrastructure for these communities has been decimated as well. Not surprisingly, online charities have sprung up to help the people permanently displaced by the Fogo eruption.

INVOLCAN filmed some stunning moments of lava flows moving through the towns (see above) and new images from Google Earth show the extent of lava flow inundation on the area (alacance on the linked image). Volcanologists following the eruption have said thatthe current activity could last as long as the 1995 eruption that lasted 56 days, so we could seemany more weeks of lava flows within the Fogo caldera, creating a massive humanitarian crisis for such a small, isolated island.

Exclusive First Look At Sir Richard Branson's Exotic Moskito Island

Flying low over the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean and the British Virgin Islands, I came across my destination, the stunning 120 acre Moskito Island. Billionaire Sir Richard Branson is near completion on this exotic new island paradise. Located one mile from his famed Necker Island, Moskito Island is located in the North Sound just off shore from Anguilla Point, Virgin Gorda and is named after the Moskito Indian tribe, not the bug. In years past, this little BVI beauty (also referred to as Mosquito Island) was once a popular playground for visiting sailors and scuba divers.

Branson is almost finished with his spectacular eco-resort, consisting of five three-bedroom villas, a massive Cliffside residence for himself, staff accommodations, a refurbished dock, a restaurant, beach bar, nature trails open to the public, an organic garden and orchard, a swimming pool and tennis courts. Branson has hand selected his neighbors who will occupy the other villas including several of the worlds leading billionaires.

Twenty additional villas are planned for the island using solar panels and wind turbines. No diesel power is being used on this all green island utilizing wind and solar as part of his plan to green the islands. The island will become a working model for how other islands can cut expensive diesel imports . We know that islands will suffer the most from climate change and sea level rise Branson says, Reefs will be devastated and wildlife decimated. Its realistic to think that whole islands could be 75-80% clean energy in four to five years.

Architect Gus Wustemann has even published some spectacular renderings of one of the Main Villas interiors utilizing a solid base sculptured out of rock with new advanced hurricane safe design an amazing fantasy world of underwater windows will introducing high technology to preserve the environment with minimal impact.

And keeping with Bransons exotic tastes, he currently has a ring tailed Lemur refuge located there. Acquired from zoos around the world, hehopes to give the near-endangered animals a habitat within the islands tropical rainforests. Native only to Madagascar, the gorgeous ring-tailed lemurs have massive deforestation across the world. Branson imported these cat-like creatures from zoos in Canada, South Africa and Sweden.

VIVA Excon cofounder Charlie Co and festival director Manny Montelibano

The 13th instalment of the Visayas Islands Visual Arts Exhibit and Conference (Viva Excon) returned to Negros Occidental last Nov. 13-19, and successfully gathered different artists and artworks from the islands. Theme was Inspire.

This is the fourth time that Negros Occidental hosted Viva Excon, and it is a pleasure that it goes back to where it originally started, said top Bacolod-based artist Charlie Co, one of the founders of Viva Excon.

The art group Black Artist in Asia founded Viva Excon 26 years ago. It is the largest artist-run art exhibition and conference in the Visayas. It tours the region every two years with the help of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

The idea of this is to showcase the creative works of Visayas and to have a voice in the Philippine art scene, Co said. We would like everyone to know that we also have a good number of talents here.

Manny Montelibano, Viva Excon 2014 festival director, said organizing the event was made difficult because of logistical issues only worsened by the recent calamities that hit many areas of the Visayas.

Overwhelming

CURATOR Patrick Flores

But Montelibano said public response to the festival was overwhelming. He added that despite scarce resources, the festival invited artists from Luzon, Mindanao and even outside the Philippines.
