Children who meet a greater number of established recommendations for a healthy lifestyle at age 10 or 11 are less likely to receive a diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by age 14, suggests a study published in Psychosomatic Medicine.

The incidence of ADHD among children and youth is high, and temporal increases have been paralleled by deteriorating lifestyles. Poor diet quality, physical inactivity, poor sleep habits, and sedentary behaviors have all been associated with ADHD, researchers wrote.

However, no earlier prospective study has examined the independent and combined importance of meeting established lifestyle recommendations in childhood for ADHD in adolescence.

Researchers collected survey information on lifestyle for 3436 children ages 10 and 11 as well as linked health data until age 14. They examined the data for associations between adherence to 9 specific lifestyle recommendations and ADHD diagnosis and physician visits. Just over 10% of the study population received an ADHD diagnosis by age 14.

Neurofeedback Treatments Rated Effective in ADHD

Meeting recommendations for vegetables and fruit, meat and alternatives, saturated fat, added sugar, and physical activity was associated with fewer ADHD diagnoses, the study found.

Meeting 7 to 9 lifestyle recommendations, meanwhile, was associated with substantially lower incidence of ADHD and fewer physician visits related to ADHD, compared with meeting 1 to 3 recommendations.

For each additional lifestyle recommendation a child followed, the likelihood of an ADHD diagnosis dropped 18%, according to Medscape coverage of the study.

Lifestyle recommendations exist to benefit development and physical health, researchers wrote. Their promotion comes at no harm and may have benefits for ADHD.

Unfortunately, taking such a narrow, reductionist approach to tackling a condition that is heavily socially influenced is unlikely to be successful, and may be actively harmful to the mental health of the children in question.

Obesity does not exist in a social vacuum

The first issue with weighing students comes from the process itself. Body mass index (BMI) is an equation that is commonly used to categorise individuals based on their weight, as either underweight, healthy weight, overweight, or obese. BMI is calculated using height and weight measurements, alongside age and gender in children. Nowhere in this equation is fat mentioned. In fact, a well-known limitation of the measurement is that it cannot tell the difference between excess fat, muscle, or bone. This limitation highlights a dangerous precedent that BMI sets: that weight, whether fat or muscle, is synonymous with health, and that too much of it is a bad thing. Because of this, it is important that BMI is used in conjunction with other assessments, as a starting point for further discussion as suggested by the NHS.

Obesity does not exist in a social vacuum, meaning that a narrow, weight-based approach to tackling it is likely to be ineffective. There is a correlation between childhood obesity and parental obesity, with parents who are overweight often thinking that their child is the correct weight, despite them being classified as overweight or obese. Additionally, in both reception and year six, obesity prevalence is over twice as high in the most deprived areas in comparison to the least deprived areas. This gap is only increasing.

Obesity is a social issue, and is linked to home conditions, whether that be parental obesity or levels of deprivation. Therefore, simply weighing children in school is unlikely to provide the motivation, information, and in some cases, the financial means to allow families to transition to a healthier lifestyle.

In addition to the potential inefficacy of the approach, it is important to consider the emotional consequences that being weighed in front of peers will have on some individuals. The knowledge that BMI calculations are being done with the aim of classifying individuals as healthy (or not), normal (or not), and thin enough (or not) is enough to make any child uncomfortable. However, for the 1 in 8 children who suffer from a mental health condition, the effects may be much more severe than 30 minutes of discomfort.

Eating disorders are the first worry that comes to mind. The NHS website states that being criticised for your eating habits, body shape or weight is one in a list of five factors which increase the risk of developing an eating disorder. In 2017 0.4% of 5-19 year olds were affected by eating disorders, with 1.6% of 17-19 year old girls being classified as having an eating disorder. This number will only increase as a focus on weight causes more children, even those who were never classified as overweight to begin with, to become paranoid about their size.

Eating disorders are not the only mental health condition that may be exacerbated by the National Obesity Forums weighing proposal. Emotional disorders, such as anxiety and depression, are also likely to be affected. Children who already have to deal with navigating their world through a lens of anxiety or depression will face the added pressure of an event that is likely to cause additional stress in the lead up to it and low self-esteem in the aftermath.

This potential effect on emotional disorders is especially concerning as these are the most prevalent type of mental health conditions seen in young people, and they are becoming more common. This increasing trend was recognised even before coronavirus, which will only have exacerbated the prevalence of such conditions, with people being more likely to experience risk factors such as loneliness and stressful life events.

We live in a society that continually rams down our throats the importance of being thin. Schools should protect children from this. They should teach them to love their bodies, teach them that it is okay to have stretch marks on their legs or on their hips, that it is okay if they are a size 14 not a size 8, that all bodies are different and will react in different ways to the food they eat and the exercise they do, and that while they should aim to be healthy, this does not mean that they have to aim to be thin.

Survey: Americans are Concerned About Their Physical Fitness and Mental Health – Yet Resolved to Take Charge of Their Self-Care – PRNewswire

Snapshot of a Pandemic-Weathered NationON survey results show that a majority of Americans (62%) are concerned with their overall health. Healthy habits such as workouts and pickup sports games with friends have taken a back seat of late, with 63% of respondents admitting they are not as active as they'd like to be.

More than half (51%) are exercising less than before the pandemic: 45% report gaining weight and 42% say they are eating less healthy. And a majority of respondents (85%) say they are facing barriers to getting healthier, be it a lack of motivation (38%), lack of financial resources (33%) or lack of access to equipment and proper training for workouts (30%).

Concerns emerging in the survey show the toll on mental health too: two-thirds of respondents say they are more stressed and anxious than before the pandemic, and 45% report feeling "less like myself." Feelings of isolation may be a contributing factor, as six in 10 feel like they've lost a sense of community because of COVID-19 and two in five are concerned about maintaining relationships with friends and family.

Despite it all, Americans remain optimistic: 86% feel that there are ways in which the pandemic could lead to lasting improvements, like a deeper appreciation for the little things in life (63%), for friends and family (56%) and for themselves and what they're capable of doing (38%.) Nine in 10 say they've learned something about themselves a third of those realized they are strong and resilient.

Women experience unique healthcare challenges and are more likely to be diagnosed with certain unique diseases compared to men. 38 percent of women suffer from one or more chronic diseases, compared to 30 percent of men. As women grow older their health needs change and starts developing chronic problems which are often neglected.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women. The risk of heart disease is due to unhealthy lifestyle, like diabetes, hypertension, obesity and lack of physical activity.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally. Cancers of the breast, lung, colon, skin and uterus is often common in many women. Approximately 70 percent of deaths from cancer occur in low and middle income countries. High body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, and alcohol use. Tobacco use is the most important risk so raising awareness about symptoms and risk factors for particular cancers is an important component of prevention and early diagnosis.

Weight gain and disorders

Less activity plus the natural loss of muscle mass can both contribute to a slower metabolism as you get older. Weight gain usually happens due to various reasons like hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome, depression and anxiety, insomnia, perimenopause, dehydration, ovarian cancer, diabetes, and pregnancy-induced weight gain. Metabolic disorders like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Stress, unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical activity can even more prone for worsening the problem. Engage daily routine activities as part of exercise like climb the stairs, walk to buy something from shop, involve in aerobic exercise.

Look upon your retirement as an opportunity to become more active instead of less. Spend more time gardening, walking, and playing with your grandchildren. Now that you have the time, make regular physical activity a part of every day. Go for a walk every morning or every evening before dinner. Involve yourself to an exercise cycle, reading a favourite book or magazine.

Can we trust the endless supply of Studies? – Patch.com

If I had to make a list of things that are in much higher supply now than 20 or 30 years ago I would say:

1. Television channels and options

2. Billionaires

3. "Health Food" options

4. Social Networks

5. "Scientific" Studies

It has been said that Americans love gossip but it is equally true that Americans love "studies" and surveys and all media outlets and marketing companies and virtually anyone with an agenda is producing studies to create interest, change behavior, distribute propaganda, or just to sell goods and services.

But, what are "studies" and are they all created equally? I think we all would be served well if, as students in school, we were taught how to scrutinize and examine a study for it's value, impartiality, credibility, and truthfulness. Most people don't have much of a clue of how to critically evaluate a "study" and certainly most people don't know what makes a study scientific or whether a scientific study is even more credible than a study that does not follow scientific guidelines.

I would maintain that the manipulation of "studies" is one of the most common characteristics of a "study". The processes of a significant percentage of studies are seriously flawed and designed to reach a specific, orchestrated conclusion.

If you add the word "Research" or "Scientific" in front of the word "study" then you create the illusion, in many cases, that the study has even more credibility.

The truth is...if we look to see who is paying for most studies we will find that it is often people or companies or industries that have an agenda; a strong incentive to make certain the results of the "study" make them look good.

Do you even wonder if a study is legitimate simply based on the seeming impossibility of even collecting the data in any legitimate way?

Many studies we see front row and center from the media are based on polling. When you ask how many people like turkey vs. pastrami then you certainly do not have the resources to ask all 320 million in the U.S. how they feel re: turkey vs. pastrami. You will select a very small sample size and then you will associate a margin of error (highly flawed protocol) with this sample size. If 2016 taught us anything it should have taught us that polls are remarkably flawed. In the Michigan Democratic primary Bernie Sanders was, by virtually all polls, 25 points behind Hillary Clinton in most polls taken just the day before the primary. He was supposed to get trounced. No poll had this primary even close. Most respected pollsters had Clinton in a 25 point victory with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 points. So, according to their own expertise the polls can only be off by a factor of 2.5 points either way. Well, things didn't go as expected as Sanders won Michigan by 2 points. That represents a total failure in the polls as having even a remote approximation of actually voting results. Their +/- 2.5 points is so incredibly wrong that it's hard to process. The entire primary was one polling gaff after another. The polls were embarrassingly worthless. Yet, the American public will still give credibility to polling.

"Research" studies or Surveys are another type of analysis designed to uncover facts. It seems like Studies and Surveys of all kinds are overwhelmingly prevalent in our society. The results of most studies that are publicly cited in the media are, generally, that it influences our behavior or changes our belief about something in a way that is contrary to the standard perception. This is how it gets people's attention and gets "clicks". This is how the media makes money. In a Capitalist society where money is king we can only imagine how "studies" are used to influence people's behaviors or purchasing trends.

For an example, in 2008 the International Dairy Council met in Mexico City for their annual meeting. They were concerned with the growing fact that people across the world were eating less dairy due to a perception that dairy was not as good for health as traditionally accepted. They were losing sales and they needed to make some decisions. They decided collectively to put lots of dollars into research that would show that dairy was not bad for health. They looked for sympathetic researchers who would change public opinion about dairy consumption. They found a researcher in Berkeley, California who had been funded by the Beef industry and the Dairy Industry. This doctor released a study that suggested that Dairy was not bad for your health. It literally revitalized the Dairy industry at the time. Research is very expensive and large companies with tremendous resources and much to gain have the ability to do highly biased "research" and pay for the people who they want to do the research. It's a classic case of conflict of interest. The general public isn't protected from this biased research. They assume that a "study" has credibility and it is performed without bias. Similarly the Tobacco industry funded many studies in an attempt to debunk the overwhelming evidence that smoking is extremely bad for your health. Certainly it blunted some of the bad publicity created around smoking because it clouded the perceptions. Eventually the tobacco industry couldn't counter the onslaught of repeated negative studies.

Baby food companies were able, in the early 60's, to get mothers to question whether their own milk was as good for their baby as processed baby formula. Breastfeeding rates went down dramatically during the 50's and 60's based on horribly flawed science that was motivated by profits for the Baby Food companies. In 1956 a "study" showed that only 20% of women in America were breastfeeding. The rest were buying formula. Think of all the money that was made off those lies. If you are the Baby Food lobby then pay a doctor a ton of money to do a "study" showing that baby formula is better for the baby than it's mother's own milk at the same time you are associating breast feeding with a lower educated segment of society. "Educated and civilized women don't breast feed their children".

Here is an example of a type of study that will be very flawed in its assertions. Let's say you are trying to prove that people who are Vegans live longer with less disease and heart attacks than non Vegans. You select 500 Vegans and 500 non Vegans for the study. You determine that those who are Vegans studied over a 10 year period had less disease and heart attacks. Therefore, you conclude by your study that being Vegan will lower your chances of disease and heart attacks. The problem with this conclusion is that the study doesn't take in the fact that Vegans are much more likely to live healthy lifestyle unrelated to diet. They are less likely to be smokers, abusers of alcohol, and more likely to incorporate exercise in their diet and to limit junk and processed foods. There are way too many variables. A proper study will eliminate variables. This makes it impossible to associate a Vegan diet with less disease and heart attacks based on that study. Studies are easy to coerce and, like sausage, the general public doesn't know how they are made.

It is very common to find two different studies that reached exactly opposite conclusions. There are dozens of studies over the last 60 years that will say that foods (meat proteins primarily) that are high in saturated fats will increase your risk of heart attack and stroke significantly. There are also dozens of studies that will show that diets high in saturated fats do not increase the risk for heart attack and stroke. Who is wrong? Who is paying for these studies? What kind of controls are used in the studies? There are properly performed studies and there are poorly performed studies. Most people just read the headlines and they have no ability to dissect a study based on scientific cr
iteria. The validity of studies is very important because studies are often used to establish credibility and justification in a court of law. If an industry or a doctor, etc., can point to a published study that supports his or her protocols then it can shield them from liability whether or not that study is worthless, biased, poorly performed, etc..

In the age of the increasing power of social media there is a lot of money to be made in getting our attention (with ludicrous headlines OR truth) and there is perhaps even more money to be made by changing our behavior such that we eat more eggs, eat more vegetables, buy more vitamin supplements, buy more exercise equipment, eat more chicken, incarcerate more black people, build a wall between California and Mexico, etc..

It's now more important than ever to be able to sift through insidious manipulation by virtually every facet of society and to think critically and clearly. It's a difficult challenge but it is required of us or else we will lose control of our autonomy and of Truth. For some it will be a question of life or death.

Clean beauty has been all the rage, but a new clean favorite is about to hit center stage- clean wine. Although clean wine isnt a novel idea, it hasnt been readily available or accessible to the masses. The easiest way to get ahold of truly clean wine is to have a relationship with an organic winery. Luckily, Michelle Feldman, a holistic esthetician turned sommelier, and Courtney Dunlop, former beauty and health journalist, came together to bring clean wine to everyone with their brand Good Clean Wine.

We both love and drink wine. Weve seen the rise of clean beauty and skincare, and people becoming aware of what they put on their skin and in their bodies. People feel comfortable seeking out clean skincare and farm-fresh, unprocessed food, but when it comes to wine, its very confusing. People arent aware that there are many additives that can be added to wine. There are so many amazing wine producers out there making high quality wine without these additives, and they are using sustainable farming practices, but we saw that there was a huge group of people that would never find these wines because they arent experts. According to Feldman, wine can include up to 60 ingredients in addition to grapes to achieve desired colors and tastes and to fix and stabilize wine. While the EU has regulations around what can be added to wine, in the US there arent any set standards in place. Much like the beauty industry there isnt a benchmark or guideline to what defines clean wine. Typically, clean wine is sustainably farmed and made from vineyard to bottle. Dunlop and Feldman chose to use the word clean because customers already have a frame of reference for that term and are familiar with it in regards to skincare and food. Our version of clean means minimal intervention. As little as possible is done to the wine during the entire process from grape to bottle so that the wine tastes amazing and makes you feel great. At the end of the day, the only way to really know if your wine is clean is to know your winemakers and do your research. We created Good Clean Wine for people who arent inclined to do that research, said Dunlop. When we say our wine is clean, we arent saying that other wine is bad or dirty. There are amazing wine producers all over the world making clean wine, and they have been for generations. We are an option for people who arent familiar with the winemaking world and how it works. Many of us are working from home as we wait out the coronavirus, and our kids are home with us. On top of normal parenting and house maintenance duties, we've got teaching responsibilities and support needs for our kids, who are worried about academics, social interactions, job possibilities and our ability to provide for them.

Schools are out for the summer across the country (after an interrupted end to the academic year), interactions with others are limited and the space inside your home can become quite small. Plus, we have to carry out our work responsibilities, assuming we're still employed.

How do we fulfill the additional roles placed upon us by the viral outbreak while keeping everything together?

Managing the crisis

There are a few things we can do to help make the new reality go a bit more smoothly.

* Have a schedule. Introduce regular times for bed and for getting up. Provide structure to the day in terms of schoolwork, appropriate duties for keeping the home neat and clean and for getting meals together.

* Create some goals. This can be a time for learning new things, reading an interesting book and reporting on it, discussing schoolwork in more depth and taking care of pending things that a more fluid schedule tends to ignore.

* Set aside specific space for particular activities. That helps keep things organized and less confusing.

* Provide for some distance. Give each member of the household his or her space.

Among the towering spires and ceramic inlaid stupas of Bangkoks Wat Pho temple are a group of inscriptions from the 19th Century. Shaded by the wooden eaves, these large marble plaques, known as the Epigraphic Archives of Wat Pho, divulge the secrets of the Thai way of life and are one of the earliest recordings of the techniques of one of Thailands most revered therapies: Nuad Thai (Thai massage).

Thai massage helps close this gap, cure ailments and make a connection

Added to Unescos Intangible Culture Heritage of Humanity list in 2019, this ancient healing method practised by Buddhist monks at the temple uses a blend of stretching, yoga and acupressure techniques to relax the body. Unlike Swedish massage or Hawaiian lomi lomi massage, where the patient is a passive participant, in Thai massage, the patient who remains fully clothed bends, stretches and moves their limbs with the help of the therapist to boost flexibility. Some therapists in Thailand will even step on the patients back to more deeply massage the muscles, although its not a technique used by all.

Chiselled into the marble on the Wat Pho plaques are representations of sen lines crisscrossing energy paths on the body that therapists follow when placing their hands, feet or elbows on a person which are believed to be conduits of life force. Each plaque features the outline of a human figure with features such as a rib cage or spine, and the network of thin black lines is intersected with dots, depicting acupressure points. Each acupressure point is annotated with a label noting which ailment it corresponds to. In Nuad Thai, its thought that the body comprises four elements (earth, water, wind and fire), which the therapist rebalances by manipulating the acupressure points to remove any energy blockages from the sen lines.

In the mid-19th Century, before the introduction of modern medicine in Thailand, the 16th-Century temple served as a centre for medical education, which included Nuad Thai as part of its curriculum. And so, when King Bhumibol wanted to open a Thai massage school in 1955, it was no surprise that he chose the grounds of Wat Pho. Today, students from all over the world come here to study the practice; and while Nuad Thai can now be found in spas across the globe, the soul of the therapy hasnt changed much from its humble beginnings.

While Wat Pho is conventionally known as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage, the earliest adopters of this ancient Thai therapy lie far beyond the temple doors and can be found deep in the countryside within Thailands farming communities. Each village has traditionally had its own massage healer who the villagers visit to help cure their aches and pains from hard days of labour. The designated healer, often an elder, performs the back-cracking, body-folding therapy that has been handed down through the generations, and wont charge for his or her services as the practice follows the Buddhist tenets of caring for others in the community.

Wat Pho Massage School teacher Krairath Chantrasri, who is from the farming area of Phetchabun in northern Thailand, knows first-hand what an important part these healers play in village life. My grandfather is one of the massage healers who used to treat people in my community, he said. I wasnt very old, but I remember people visiting my grandfather at the house, and I would go and see what they were doing.

Nuad Thai is practised in nearly every rural household. Children are often taught the techniques so they can ease the aching muscles of their parents and grandparents after they have spent the day toiling in the rice paddies. While they might not understand the acupressure point theory behind it, they know how to pull and push limbs and how to step on the back to soothe the muscles of their hardworking relatives. The therapys humble roots can be seen in the way it is performed, usually on a mattress on the floor (similar to the ones seen in traditional Thai homes).

While Chantrasri was encouraged by his mother to perfect his skill at the Wat Pho Massage School, he had been practising massage from an early age. My mother would ask me to step on her legs or on her back to give her a massage. I was being taught massage techniques, but as a child I didnt realise it, he said. Although now, as a therapist at Wat Pho, he no longer practises these particular techniques as they are not part of the schools philosophy and curriculum.

The tablets at Wat Pho may be the most public record of Thai massage, but the earliest documentation of the therapy is a royal decree from 1455, which makes reference to the courts massage department. But how Nuad Thai came to exist originally in communities is due to a synthesis of various healing traditions says Jan Chaithavuthi, co-author of Ancient Thai Massage Healing with Prana. The idea of life force in Thai massage practise may be influenced by Chinese and Indian cultures. However, the practical techniques that make Thai massage unique have been invented by the Thai people and handed down through the generations, she said.

Thai massage takes two forms: folk Thai massage and royal Thai massage. Folk Thai massage is practised in the countryside, and the practitioner uses his or her hands, elbows, knees and feet to help ease the muscle aches of the villager. It is the most practised form in Thailand and around the world. Royal Thai massage is a more reserved method that was created in the palaces, where the healer only uses his or her hands and fingertips to apply the treatment, remaining at arms length. This is the method that the Ministry of Public Health advises massage clinics at community health centres and hospitals to follow.

No matter what, each Nuad Thai treatment begins as it has for centuries with the therapist saying a wai khru (prayer) to thank his or her teachers and ask for help in healing the client. We will think of our teacher and Chiwaka Komparaphat (Buddhas physician) who is respected as the first teacher of Thai traditional medicine, said Serat Tangtrongchitr, general manager at the Wat Pho Massage School. We give thanks and ask for them to help us heal the client.

After the image of Nuad Thai was tarnished by US military personnel seeking more than a massage during the Vietnam War, in 1985, the Thai government launched the Thai Massage Revival Project, a programme that would reclaim the practice as a spiritual therapy and help shed its tawdry image. Experts from the fields of public health, Thai traditional medicine and therapeutic massage worked together to create a series of curricula that would define the principles and techniques of Thai massage. The project took three years to complete and focused on safety, efficacy and etiquette. Today, Thai massage therapists must achieve 800 hours of study before they can become licensed practitioners.

The therapy that has helped to get Thai farmers get back onto their feet has also become part of mainstream medical care, as Thai hospitals now use Nuad Thai to rehabilitate stroke patients and diabetes sufferers, among others. It has also grown into a multimillion-dollar industry that provides livelihoods for many Thais, including those who might have previously been on the fringes of society. There are now massage schools for the blind in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, and the Chiang Mai Womens Correctional Institution has a massage college for inmates.

Nuad Thai has also proven to be a big attraction for tourists either in the form of experiencing massage or learning the techniques themselves. Thai massage schools such as Wat Pho Thai Massage School and the Thai Massage School of Thailand in Chiang Mai (TMC), which was co-founded byChaithavuthi, attract international students from as far away as Peru and North America. Training is demanding, said UK therapist Ashlei
gh Guthrie who travelled to Wat Pho Thai Massage School to learn the discipline. The techniques require you to have a strong core as its quite an active method. Agility and flexibility are also required to master the art of the stretches.

Canadian Paul Buffel, a former marketing professional, chose to study at TMC in Chiang Mai. He believes that the 30-hour flight was more than worth it. Thai massage is best understood, integrated and expressed through the lens of Thai culture, he said. The people, land and culture of Thailand are intricately embodied within the practice of Thai massage.

Even though all Thais now have access to free government health care, village healers still influence Thai culture to this day. We still use Thai herbal medicine, and Thai massage is part of our daily lives, said Chaithavuthi.

Tangtrongchitr believes that this ancient therapy is relevant now more than ever. We may be surrounded by people, but the modern world can be a lonely place. Thai massage helps close this gap, cure ailments and make a connection.

A popular notion is that breakfast provides us with the energy we need for the day, but thats not all. What we term breakfast food are also very good sources of essential nutrients such as calcium, iron, B vitamins, protein, and fiber all of which the body need. Research has shown that when we miss replenishing these nutrients at breakfast, the chances of compensating for them later in the day are very low. This also why it is important to incorporate some of our daily five at breakfast.

A brief history of breakfast

Very often when we talk about breakfast and how it has evolved both in nature and cultural relevance, our reference point is the West and how the industrial revolution, among other cultural shifts have transformed what people put on their plate when they wake up to a new day.

According to Breakfast: A History by Heather Arndt Anderson, there was a time when eating before 11am was considered gluttonous and immoral. By the 15th and 16th centuries, morning-food lovers, such as Francis I of France, and Queen Elizabeth of England, an early riser, made breakfast more popular. It wasnt until the mid-1600s that breakfast started to look a little more like what we recognize it as today featuring bacon and eggs. By the late 1800s, cereal was invented and convenience foods were born.

Before refrigeration revolutionized food preservation, families only made as much food as they could eat at any point in time, and leftovers were eaten first thing in the morning to prevent waste. Nomadic groups would eat whatever the night leftover over plus milk from the herd when it is available. And settled farmers ate whatever was leftover from dinner plus the staples in their store for added bulk. Even today, most things we eat are a reflection of our current society and breakfast is no exception.

Considering we are almost always in a hurry to get out the door, breakfast most often consists of things we are familiar with and quick fixes.

Why you need to be deliberate about your breakfast

We must all be familiar with the saying, Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper. It crystallizes the wisdom behind advice advocating for healthy eating and emphasizes how central this is to overall good health. There is a tangible connection between a healthy breakfast and healthy people.

A large and growing body of scientific evidence now supports the claim that breakfast really is a very important meal. For instance, Cahill et al. (2013) documented a 27% increase in coronary heart disease amongst those North American men who regularly failed to eat a balanced meal at the start of the day. Fat loss lessons one man learned losing 140 pounds and keeping it off – Insider – INSIDER

Losing weight is one thing, keeping it off is another.

In fact, research suggests that 80% of people who lose at least 10% of their body weight regain everything they lost, if not more.

So it's extra impressive when someone manages to sustain their weight loss.

One such person is Carter Good: In 2011, he weighed 305 pounds.

But within a year, he'd lost 100 pounds, and the year after that he lost another 40. Nine years later, Good hasn't regained the weight.

The 25-year-old from Austin, Texas, who is now a weight loss coach and qualified personal trainer, recently shared the 10 most important lessons he's learned about sustainable fat loss in an Instagram post.

"I know that my weight loss is inspiring ... and so every time I share, I try to use it as a way to encourage and educate others on the right way to lose weight and get healthy," Good told Insider.

Here are the 10 lessons Carter Good learned through losing 140 pounds, and keeping it off.

Good learned the hard way about how to lose weight right.

"Initially, it was all through crazy restriction and cardio," he told Insider, explaining that he found a diet plan online and just cut the portions in half, which he now realizes was "not smart."

"Along with eating a very low-calorie diet, I would use the elliptical for 60 to 75 minutes every single day," he added.

Although this approachdidlead to weight loss, it wasn't sustainable because it was too restrictive.

"It took one to two years of education and mental growth to find more balance between my fitness goals and other life goals," he said.

It's essential to make the process enjoyable.

"Regardless of how long it takes you to lose weight, you're going to spend a much longer time maintaining a lean and healthy body," Good wrote on Instagram.

Good encourages people to understand that your weight is a tool, not your identity.

"People come to me with the goal of losing a certain amount of weight," he said. "Maybe it's a weight they used to be at, or maybe a weight their doctor recommends reaching.

"Either way, the number isn't the goal ... it's what happens when you get down to that number."

So instead of thinking about the number on the scale as the goal, focus on the habits, strategies, and routine you'll develop on the way.

Although the key to sustainable weight loss is creating a healthy lifestyle you enjoy and can thus maintain, and it's never wise to cut out every food you enjoy, youwillhave to make some changes, Good said.

"Most people struggle with their weight," he wrote.

"If you prioritize fitness, you're going to have to be disciplined. You'll often have to skip the next round of beers or pass on the late-night slice.

"That doesn't mean you can't have fun, though."

The sad truth is that peanut butter, while being nutrient-dense and delicious, is also very energy-dense and easy to overeat.

"It's sad, I know," Good wrote.

"But for real. Measure that s---."

As healthy as kale and celery may be, there's no point forcing yourself to eat them if you don't enjoy them.

"Eat whole foods you enjoy," Good wrote.

"Include 'fun foods' you enjoy. You should never resent your diet."

Good wrote that as he lost weight, his cravings didn't vanish but he got "better at delaying gratification for a greater reward."

"People who are successful in fitness (and other areas of life) are the people who are able to delay gratification. Simple as that," he explained to Insider.

"Oftentimes with fitness, the 'easier' and 'more enjoyable' choice you make in the moment isn't the one that'll lead to being lean and healthy."

For example, watching Netflix on the couch is easier than going to do a workout.

"Part of becoming someone who makes fitness a priority is being able to make the harder choice in the moment that leads to a greater reward in the future," Good said.

"It's not an easy mindset to train, but the more consistent you can be from the start, the easier it gets especially once you start seeing results!"

You may be surprised by how people respond to your weight loss.

"Just like anything worth having," Good wrote.

Don't rush the process.

Good wrote that investing in your health and making fitness a priority is worth it because not only does it lead to feeling and looking better, but it allows you to do better for the people in your life.

"Losing weight has taught me about hard work, discipline, and delayed-gratification, which has helped me in so many other areas of my life," Good said.

"For example, if it wasn't for fitness, I would have never believed in my ability to build and grow my own business.

"It's also taught me that I can accomplish anything I want in life. I just have to be willing to work hard, be patient, and refuse to quit."

Gabriel Gaarden fought for fair tuition and public health – UNM Daily Lobo

Gabriel Gaarden wore many hats during his time at the University of New Mexico. Graduating this spring with a masters in public health is just one of his many achievements.

Gaarden was a notable student for both his work as a research assistant and as the president of the Public Health Student Association (PHSA), where he grew as a leader and acted as a voice for the student population in combating differential tuition.

At his core, Gaarden said his true passion is for nutrition. After becoming a registered dietitian in 2018, Garden started working for a program called Ideas for Cooking and Nutrition, which provides nutrition education to low-income populations throughout New Mexico, at New Mexico State University.

You can educate people all you want. I know that I need to eat more fruits and vegetables, but if I dont have access to them or I cant afford them, it wont make a difference, he said.

Gaarden said he chose public health as his masters degree because it takes a primary prevention approach to health, which is something he is passionate about and wants to apply to the nutrition side of health.

Instead of people getting sick and then Im counseling a diabetic or someone with heart disease on how they can improve their health, I want to just go upstream where I can educate them before they get sick about how to adopt healthy lifestyle practices and healthy nutrition, Gaarden said.

He said he also hopes to change the nutrition environment for New Mexicans so they always have access to healthy and affordable food options.

What I would really love to do in my career is not only educate people about nutrition which I love to do but I know the best way for me to have the broadest impact possible is to change the food environment, Gaarden said. That means eliminating food deserts and making sure people dont have to drive an hour or two hours to get to a good grocery store where they can get access to health foods.

At UNM, Gaarden will be remembered as a leader of the PHSA, where he acted as a voice for students in speaking up against differential tuition.

Earlier this semester, the Daily Lobo reported that Gaarden and his colleague, Alden Reviere, spoke against the proposed differential tuition increase during two Board of Regents committee meetings.

During public comment in the first meeting, the two masters of public health graduate students quashed differential tuition for their program. Their dean, Dr. Tracie Collins, withdrew the proposal after Gaarden and Reviere's staunch opposition.

Gaarden said the students' primary concern was why the college was as their very first means of trying to increase funding for the college going to put a tuition increase on the backs of the students who are among the most vulnerable populations.

Gaarden said the proposal was for a $100 per credit hour increase for the undergraduate program and $150 increase for the masters program on top of the original tuition and fees students had to pay.

Many of our students are low income, so to then ask students to pay an additional $1,350 per semester is a huge ask for students, Gaarden said.

Audrey Cooper, Gaardens friend and vice president of the PHSA, said she will remember Gaarden as the kind of person who wants to do a good job and do right by everything that he does.

The fact that we had to mount a contentious position that forced him to take the side of the students when hes a very respected student among the faculty I think was a big point of personal growth for him, because he had to be very strong in his position and very confident and clear, and I feel like he rose to the occasion for that, Cooper said.

Although the graduate students of the College of Population Health defeated the implementation of differential tuition, the undergraduate students were not able to come together and voice their concerns in time.

Cooper said it was because of Gaardens leadership that they were able to defeat differential tuition.

With Gabriels leadership we were able to very quickly put together a response and an effective plan that prompted the Dean to rescind her proposal for this year, she said.

In addition to serving as the PHSAs president, Gaarden worked closely with Dr. Fransico Soto Mas on a number of evaluation and research-based projects.

Among those projects was an evaluation of the Bernalillo County Grow the Growers Farmer Training Program and the development of a survey that will be distributed to approximately 500 certified organic farmers in the South Central Region of the U.S.

Gaarden said the survey aims to assess the unique psychological, social, and occupational factors that may contribute to or challenge the safety, health and well-being of certified organic producers.

Dr. Soto Mas said Gaarden was chosen as a research assistant for his many qualities including his maturity, responsibility and dedication to his work.

I strongly believe he will make a significant contribution to the public health field, and would like to see him continue his leadership and advocacy activities, particularly at the community and policy levels, Soto Mas said.

American Society for Preventive Cardiology Offers Survey to Aid Healthy Lifestyle During COVID-19 – Diagnostic and Interventional Cardiology

May 11, 2020 The American Society for Preventive Cardiology (ASPC) is collaborating with Intervent International to provide its members and their patients free access toIntervent's evidence-based, personalized, online/digital, educational resources and content. The collaboration is a patient-centered initiative to help adults play an active role in their own heart health during the COVID-19 pandemic, including heart attack/stroke prevention and recovery after a cardiac event.

As emphasized in a recent ASPC scientific statement, adults who fare poorly with COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) infection more commonly have risk factors for (e.g., high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes) and/or known cardiovascular disease. Moreover, while it is especially important to lead a healthy lifestyle and manage chronic medical conditions during COVID-19, traditional outpatient care services have been significantly disrupted. Many patients are delaying or deferring necessary care, including preventive care. In addition, social distancing has negatively altered physical activity and eating habits in many adults and is contributing to higher-than-usual stress levels. To make things worse, virtually all facility-based cardiac rehabilitation programs for those who have recently experienced a cardiac event (e.g., heart attack, angioplasty/stent, bypass surgery) have temporarily closed. If not promptly addressed, such changes are likely to adversely impact cardiovascular health.
