Cut These 5 Things From Your Life to Lower Cancer Risk – Best Life

When it comes to making healthy lifestyle choicesparticularly ones about your dietit can be confusing to know which way to turn for advice. One expert might say that a certain food is the healthiest thing you can eat while an article you stumbled across online claims that food should be avoided at all costs. In addition, health and nutrition recommendations tend to change every few years, which doesn't make things any less murky. What we do know is that at least 18 percent of all cancers diagnosed in the U.S. are related to excess body weight, physical inactivity, excess alcohol consumption, and/or poor nutrition, which means they are preventable. That's why it's good to have a core source of information like the American Cancer Society (ACS) to tell you the things that can lower your cancer risk, as well as what can raise it.

Each year, the ACS releases the Diet and Physical Activity Guideline. Published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, the 2020 guidelines feature key revisions to the food and beverage category, including the following five things you should cut out of your life to reduce your risk of cancer. While they previously recommended that you limit your intake of red meat and processed meat, the ACS now says to cut it out all together. Why? They found it clearly increases your risk of developing a variety of cancers. For example, your risk of colon cancer increases 23 percent with each additional serving (about two ounces) of processed meat and 22 percent per every additional three-ounce serving of red meat.

Instead, the ACS says to get your protein through fish, poultry, and beans. According to the ACS, this updated recommendation is, "in alignment with the World Health Organization's (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classification in 2015 of processed meats as a carcinogen and red meat as a probable carcinogen." In prior years, the ACS said to limit daily alcohol consumption to one drink for women and two men. However, in 2020, their official recommendation is to avoid alcohol entirelythough the previous guideline remains applicable for men and women who continue to drink.

The reason for the update may have something to do with the fact that alcohol consumption is the third major modifiable cancer risk factor after tobacco use and being overweight. It is also an established cause of at least seven different types of cancer. Combined with all the other health and personal problems drinking can cause, the ACS says your best bet is to avoid it when you can, and consume it very moderately when you can't.

According to the ACS, "The factors most consistently associated with excess body fat include sugarsweetened beverages"which include sodas, artificially flavored juices, and any other beverages with high amounts of added sugars. In fact, these added sugars are consistently associated with obesity, which is known to cause 13 different types of cancer. Even limited intake of these sugary drinks is not recommended, says the ACS. They recommend you switch to water and unsweetened beverages as replacements.

You'll also want to steer clear of highly processed foods, which the ACS defines as, "industrially produced grainbased desserts, readytoeat or readytoheat foods, snack foods, sugarsweetened beverages, candy, and other highly palatable foods that often do not resemble their original plant or animal source."

These foods tend to be higher in fat, added sugars, refined grains, and sodium, and have been linked to various health problems such as obesity, diabetes, and cancer. Refined grains are the result of taking whole grains and removing one or more of their three key parts (bran, germ, or endosperm), according to the Whole Grains Council. Once this occurs, a significant portion of the nutrients and protein is lost. Examples of refined grains include white bread, flour, and white rice. These types of grains are often ingredients found in highly processed foods, and just like those foods, they should be avoided whenever possible due to their ability to raise your risk of developing cancer, the ACS says. A recent review published in the Journal of Sport and Health Science found that aging, obesity, and inactivity can have negative effects on the immune system.

The review found that regular activity and a healthy lifestyle can help increase the immune systems surveillance activity (when immune cells are in the bloodstream looking for infection).

On the flip side, too much exercise can lead to conditions, such as chronic fatigue, that can lower your immune systems function.

You know exercise is good for your health, but you might be wonderingcan exercise can help ward off respiratory illnesses? And should you continue exercising during a global pandemic, or should you give your immune system a rest?

As it turns out, continued physical activity can actually help boost your immune systembut just dont overdo it.

A recent review published in the Journal of Sport and Health Science found that obesity and and inactivity can lower the function of the immune system, but engaging in a healthy lifestyle can help improve the immune systems surveillance activity (when immune cells are in the bloodstream looking for infection) and may even reduce mortality rates from respiratory illnesses.

So, how can you make exercise work in your favor, and how much do you need? The review found that 30 to 60 minutes of near daily brisk walking (at least 3.5 miles per hour, or a 17-minute mile) can improve your bodys defense against germs.

[Exercise] improves the surveillance activity of the immune system, review author David Nieman, Dr.PH., health professor at Appalachian State University and director of the Human Performance Lab at the North Carolina Research Campus told Runners World.

Thats because each time you exercise, the activity increases the exchange of important white blood cells between peripheral tissueswhich help with the bodys immune responseand the circulation (blood and lymph vessels). This increases the activity of immune cells in the bloodstream looking for viruses, Nieman said.

Though hard to say without much current data specific to COVID-19, when people adopt a healthier lifestyle, especially those who were previously sedentary, it may help improve their chances of recovery from upper respiratory tract infections, Nieman explained. On the flip side, overtraining can lower your immune system function.

Overtraining that leads to chronic fatigue, performance decline and mood disturbances can decrease immune function, resulting in increased odds for respiratory infections, Nieman said.

And while overtraining looks different for everyone, Nieman cautions against pushing too hard during exercise training without adequate rest and recovery, as this can lead to chronic fatigue, performance decline, and mood disturbances, which decrease immune function.

As for increasing adding in more tough workouts? Youll want to be careful you dont push too hard.

I recommend keeping exercise training at normal levels until this pandemic gets under control, Nieman said.

Bottom line: If are already an avid exerciserkeep it up, but remember everything is multifactorial, Nieman says. Physical activity is just one important factor that helps the immune system do its job better. Other factors include high flavonoid intake from berries and other fruits, low mental stress, regular sleep, and a nutrient-rich diet. Dr Koh Kok Wei, consultant cardiologist at Subang Jaya Medical Centre, says, Whenever the heart beats, it creates pressure that pushes blood through the arteries. This arterial blood pressure (BP) has two readings systolic pressure that occurs when the blood is pumped out from the heart, and diastolic pressure when the heart muscle relaxes and the arteries recoil. Normal BP is recorded as less than 120mmHg systolic and 80mmHg diastolic respectively.

However, when blood pressure is consistently higher than normal, it becomes a condition called hypertension, which can cause damage to the heart and blood vessels of susceptible organs. Dr Koh refers to the American College Of Cardiology and American Heart Association, which defines hypertension as persistent measurements high systolic BP of 130mmHg and above and diastolic BP of 80mmHg and above.

Precursor To Serious Problems

When hypertension occurs, the excess force stretches the delicate structure inside arterial walls, resulting in two forms of injuries: atherosclerosis, the abnormal thickening of the arterial walls due to accumulation of lipids and calcium, and aneurysm, an abnormal localised bulging of the weakened arterial walls.

Dr Koh explains these damaged blood vessels can cause dangerous health conditions should it occur in certain organs. These include heart attack (heart), stroke (brain), gangrene (usually affecting the legs), renal failure (kidney) and retinopathy (eyes).

In more serious cases, an aneurysm can cause the weakened arterial wall to rupture, leading to bleeding in the brain. If the heart is pumping against elevated pressure over a long period of time, the high workload will cause the heart to become weak, potentially leading to heart failure.

A 2019 journal article, "Factors Associated With The Severity Of Hypertension Among Malaysian Adults", found the prevalence of adults at risk of elevated blood pressure to be almost 70%. Dr Koh views the main contributing factors to be a high-sodium diet, sedentary lifestyle and obesity. The chances of having hypertension also increases as people grow older.

He says, Malaysian cuisine is known to contain high amounts of sodium and calories. The easy accessibility to these foods leads to the surge in obesity it is common knowledge that both obesity and a high-sodium diet lead to hypertension.

Sedentary lifestyles are also becoming more widespread among Malaysians. Dr Koh refers to data from the National Health And Morbidity Survey 2017, which revealed that less than 50% of Malaysian adolescents are physically active.

In addition, owing to better socioeconomic and healthcare status, the number of Malaysians above 65 years old has been steadily increasing over the years, leading to an increased probability of hypertension cases and chronic diseases that may contribute to high blood pressure.

Other risk factors for hypertension include excessive alcohol and tobacco use, and family history of hypertension.

Early Awareness Makes For Better Outcomes

Because hypertension is often asymptomatic, Dr Koh asserts the importance of early diagnosis and managing the disease as soon as possible. He notes hypertension can sometimes be present earlier in life with no obvious risk factors identified. Hence, the general public should get their blood pressure checked as early as possible regardless of age.

Fortunately, local clinics, pharmacies and hospitals can perform general health screenings and tests including BP checks, making it easier and more convenient for the public to manage their health. Digital BP monitors are also more user-friendly and widely available in clinics and pharmacies. Hence, Dr Koh encourages those who are at risk of hypertension to buy digital BP devices to monitor their BP at home and continue to go for regular health screenings for medical advice.

Responsibility Over Your Own Heart

While doctors and medical staff continue to raise awareness on the dangers of hypertension, it is still the patients responsibility to ensure their own health. Dr Koh recommends early screening and regular health check-ups for those who are at risk of developing hypertension. He reminds the public that prevention is better than cure, and thus everyone should try to avoid risk factors and lead healthy lifestyles.

For those who are already living with hypertension, he advises, Please adhere to your blood pressure medications along with lifestyle modifications as per your doctors advice. You also need to follow-up with your doctor long-term to adjust your medications and, more importantly, for early management should any additional complications arise.

Beaver County native ‘fighting’ on frontlines of COVID-19 battle – Ellwood City Ledger

Battling asthma while growing up in Beaver Falls, Sheldon Stewart Smith still wanted to follow his fathers footsteps and join the military. Instead, he embraced a new fight to help liberate Blacks all over the world while using his medical degree as a perfusionist and respiratory therapist. He is now a highly sought-after doctor on the frontlines battling COVID-19 in one of the nations biggest hotspots Cleveland Clinic/Fort Lauderdale-Miami.

As the youngest of three children born to Army 2nd Lt. Calvin Smith and Betty Cross (Stratton) Smith, Sheldon Stewart Smith nicknamed "BuBu" and now known as Dr. Ahmses SaRa Maat grew up aspiring to become a military hero, much like his father, who was a WWII veteran in the African American flying regiment known as the Tuskegee Airmen.

Childhood disability empowered and unknowingly helped steer his career path

Maat reflected on how growing up with chronic asthma impacted his life as a teen navigating life as a young adult, trying to avoid peer pressure.

"It was tough because kids can be mean. Along with the asthma, I also suffered skin rashes. Id get teased by the boys, but even worse my girlfriends would shy away, once the skin disorder took effect," he sadly recalled. "I remember lying in bed praying to God for the ability to just breath normally like everyone else."

Living with asthma as a child, not only hindered Maats aspirations for early athletic prowess, but after high school graduation, a failed military physical exam, his chances to volunteer for the Air Force in efforts to follow his dads and older brothers military-based footsteps were not a reality. His older brother, Newt Smith II, is a retired Air Force officer. In May 2018, a former veterans park in Beaver Falls was officially re-named the Lt. Calvin Smith Tuskegee Airman Veterans Park.

Void of clear-cut career goals after graduating from Beaver Falls High School in 1977, Maat, who never considered himself a committed academician in high school, recalled his 1.47 GPA his senior year, when he needed a 1.5 GPA to graduate. Having been taught to play chess by his father, he challenged the high schools woodshop teacher to a game. If he wins, he graduates high school. If he loses, he repeats another year. Apparently, Dads chess lessons paid off.

Following his early training at Community College of Beaver County and Community College of Allegheny County, Maat initially worked as a respiratory therapist at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. He quickly developed star-quality studying patterns while attending both CCBC and CCAC and was promoted to supervisor at AGH a stark contrast from his academic performance in high school.

Studying and practicing in Atlanta resulted in a bachelors degree in respiratory care from Georgia State University and post-bachelors degree in perfusion technology from Northeastern University in Boston. He was able to practice his newly gained experience while working at Atlantas Grady Memorial Hospital, one of the worlds leading Level 1 trauma centers.

While studying and focusing on African spirituality and physics, he attained his Ph.D. in 2000 from the Metaphysical Institute of Higher Learning in San Bernardino, California.

Fast-forward to winter 2020, amid the coronavirus outbreak, Maat finds himself in an unprecedented battlefield on the frontlines of Americas first pandemic in 100 years as a medical professional treating patients suffering from chronic respiratory deficiencies.

With more than 40 years of experience and training as a respiratory therapist, and later as a perfusionist, Maat is a highly sought-after traveling medical practitioner. Hes currently deployed at Cleveland Clinic/Fort Lauderdale-Miami, helping to counter Floridas recent spike in coronavirus cases and deaths.

Helping stem COVID-19s growing rates among Blacks

"While coronavirus patients typically display symptoms requiring oxygen support with symptoms such as chest pains, shortness of breath and muscle aches, the use of external respirators and ventilators are typical devices used to treat respiratory deficiencies," Maat said.

His perfusionist training requires expertise in administering artificial lungs, hearts and kidneys used during the replacement process of heart-lung bypass surgeries.

"My role as a perfusionist is to keep the patient alive during the replacement of organs, kidneys, lungs, hearts, during the entire operation. Where advanced cardio life-support ends, perfusion life-support begins," he explained.

Amid current cases of COVID-19 cases rising throughout the United States with disproportionate numbers impacting African Americans, Maat knows and understands how valuable his knowledge, experience and overall skill sets are during this pandemic.

But the real question that must be answered is why the African American community has suffered more than any other group during the pandemic?

Maat noted the disparaging numbers affecting people of color as the ones with generally lower immune systems.

"Those are the ones suffering from diabetes, hypertension and obesity. Its also a fact that too often, Black folks dont eat lots of vegetables and have lived in environments with high toxins like lead-based paints. Although the larger cause is systemic racism and oppression," he said. "It exists all throughout the globe, including America, and the medical industry, unfortunately."

"Systemically, as a respiratory therapist or clinical perfusionist, I tend to see a system geared toward a certain population facing more social ills. I want to make the world a better place, doing what I do and my non-African peers they see whats going on, and they too, want to do the right thing," he added.

Living in a sports-related environment was challenging

Growing up in sports-enthused western Pennsylvania specifically in Beaver Falls he wanted to be the next sports star.

"Like all the kids in my 15th Street neighborhood, I wanted to play football, basketball and baseball and become the next Joe Willie Namath, our hometown hero and Super Bowl III quarterback," Maat said.

"Hoops and football couldnt work for me, but I enjoyed playing baseball. It didnt demand the intense running like basketball, and it wasnt dirty and dusty like football. I always had to concern myself with staying healthy at all times so I always carried my inhaler," he noted.

In retrospect, Maat connected his asthma woes with environmental impacts. He lived next door to the now-razed Armstrong Cork plant, which consistently emitted smokey fumes and white, ashy particles from its factory walls. He also lived with two cigarette-smoking parents.

By the time he reached age 12, with the influence of a childhood neighbor, Richard "Dicky" Morris, Maat started taking karate lessons from the now infamous Beaver County School of the Oriental Arts of Self-Defense, headed by the family of Willy and Roy Wetzel, one of the nations first karate instructional schools, in Beaver Falls and later, Rochester. In March 1975, the school closed after a much-reported family battle between son Roy and father Willy.

Maat said his karate and judo training tremendously impacted his breathing patterns and primarily helped him to overcome childhood asthma.

With a growing reputation of being an incredibly skilled martial artist throughout Beaver County, Maat was also able to leave behind unfavorable experiences of being bullied by larger upper classmates while in high school.

He credits his mother and godmother, Marian Jane Taylor, for tending to his crisis situations as a youngster and later ensuring that he was proficient at self-care, even at a young age.

"I was always a mamas boy," he admitted. "She was fully committed to my ailment, and would often take off work early to ensure my medical needs were met. Self-care is essential to my health and has always been a part of my proactive healthy lifestyle."

Career and family development

While living in Atlanta, he joined an an
ti-KKK protest march in Forsyth County, Ga., in 1987, led by the late Rev. Hosea Williams, one of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) colleagues, along with SCLC head, the Rev. Joseph Lowery.

"In the late 1980s when South Africas President Nelson Mandela was released from prison, that sparked my interest in the liberation of Black people all over the world and to live a more revolutionary lifestyle," he said.

He changed his name, explaining, "Its similar to when Lew Alcindor changed his name to Kareem Abdul Jabbar. The reason for the name-change was based on my culture. I was Sheldon X in 1992 as a member of the Nation of Islam, and in October 1995, I led a medical brigade from L.A. to Washington, D.C., to be a part of the Million Man March."

Maat is married to Akua Two Hawk Maat, sharing a blended family including four adult children: Alexia, Malika, Mnsa and GyeNyame Maat.

Although his high school years were somewhat challenging, Maat said within his soul, he pridefully maintains the old Beaver Falls High School creed.

"Once a Tiger always a Tiger," he said, adding, "Still fighting."

Timothy Cox is a Beaver Falls native who graduated with a journalism degree from Point Park University. He also attended Slippery Rock University and CCBC. Editorial: Its time to remember mens health – The Hutchinson News

Did you know June is Mens Health Month? If you didnt know, now you do.

According to the Mens Health Network, the purpose of the month is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. It grew from 1994 legislation introduced by none other than Kansas Sen. Bob Dole originally calling for the creation of a National Mens Health Week.

According to the network, this month gives health care providers, public policy makers, the media and other individuals an opportunity to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury.

We love this idea and certainly appreciate how it adds to the legacy of one of Kansas most famous sons, Sen. Dole.

Keeping all of this in mind, lets talk about mens health for a moment.

According to the U.S. Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, men on average die five years younger than women, and die at higher rates from nine of the top 10 causes of death. Men are also less likely than women to be insured. The office also points out that many of the factors that contribute to these shorter lives are preventable.

To the ladies reading this, encourage the men in your lives to take notes and follow up on our suggestions. Most of these are common-sense things and easy enough to follow.

Guys, when was the last time you got a check-up? If its been more than a year, we suggest you find a way to see a doctor. Establishing baselines of your overall health will help you and your doctor track your health and your progress. It can also lead to early detection of diseases like cancer, which can make it more treatable.

Are you staying active? It should come as no surprise that there are many health benefits to physical activity. Most health care professionals recommend at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily. If youre not already doing so, find a way to get up and get moving. Perhaps start taking a walk or sitting less during the day. These are easy ways to bump up your activity levels.

Are you eating right? Diet, like exercise, is key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If youre looking to make a modification to your diet, the CDC has some great tips.

How is your mental health? Are you practicing self-care? This is a really stressful time with protests, political rancor and a worldwide pandemic. Take time to relax, and if you need extra help, talk to a professional.

Finally, wear blue on Friday, June 19, to support and promote mens health. The Mens Health Network also encourages using the hashtag #ShowUsYourBlue on your social media channels to help promote mens health.

Aging is an inevitable human condition, but that doesnt mean that ones golden years should be marred by degenerative illnesses.

Dr. Gar Eufemio, medical director at the Peak Form, said its quite different when one is in his or her 20s and 30s, as he or she feels like on top of the world. We are in the full flush of health and are at the peak of our physical prowess. We feel, within that age range, that we are invincible and unstoppable, Eugenio said.

However, as time flies, the human body begins to show signs of wear and tear. For example, our eyesight isnt as sharp as it used to be and we end up needing glasses, contact lenses or, for those who can afford it, laser surgery. Moreover, recovering from an injury or illness becomes slower and more tedious.

The challenge of aging becomes more formidable once you hit the 60s and 70s, when it can feel that everything is going downhilland the amount of maintenance medicines prescribed to keep us from falling apart is one visible sign of that.

Nevertheless, if one lives a relatively healthy lifestyle, shouldnt it follow that one can enjoy good health well into old age?

Eufemio, however, stressed that staying healthy even in ones advanced years is certainly possible.

What conditions affect the elderly?

Everything gradually falls apart, Eufemio said when asked about how the state of ones health changes as he or she grows older.

Degenerative conditions affecting the bodys vital systems are the primary source of concern for both doctors and patients. As the body ages, the tissues that would quickly recover and regenerate during ones youth are no longer as resilient. As a result, there are significant changes to the nervous system and skeletal system, along with major organs such as the heart and lungs.

Degeneration is a normal process as one matures, Eufemio said. This can be seen in issues like forgetfulness, irritability, osteoporosis and arthritis, hypertension and cholesterol issues, diabetes and digestive problems, blurred vision, and hearing loss. For doctors, the greatest challenge is how to slow it down.

But if degeneration is already a given, would one say that its unavoidable? Eufemio and many doctors are of the opinion that the answer to that is not that simple.

The health issues of aging are impossible to escape, but we can delay their onset and retard the progression, he said. Genetics play the biggest part here: if youve been blessed with good genes, you can do all the wrong things and still live a long and healthy life.

For the most part, however, Eufemio said critical points to consider for staying healthy well into old age are proper nutrition, regular exercise, and getting a good nights sleep. Likewise, he said keeping ones stress levels down to a manageable minimum and living in a clean and healthful environment are also key.

In which case, he underlined several options by which one can stay healthy over time:

Consider meditation and mindful livingYoga and guided meditation are good for helping one de-stress, clearing the mind of negative thoughts while placing the body in a state of rejuvenating rest. More spiritual seniors have also experienced a sense of calm through regular devotions or attendance at religious services. Volunteer work for civic or religious organizations also goes a long way in making the elderly feel active and useful.

Eat a modifiedbut still balanced dietOld age brings a number of restrictions when it comes to ones regular diet. But this should not be a reason for consuming meals that lack both nutrition and flavor or even lapsing into junk food binges. Consider healthy yet delicious meals featuring protein from green sources, natural sweeteners, and organically grown produce in season. Likewise, check with your health-care professional for the best possible supplements to keep your body in good working order.

Keep movingYou may no longer be able to run marathons, but staying active is a great way to feel young and vital. Taking brisk walks in the morning with ones pet can help, and so can regular sessions of dance-style routines such as aerobics or Zumba. Using equipment such as treadmills and elliptical trainers at home or at a gym are also excellent ways to stay in shape.

Relax and keep inflammation at bayOne way to stay healthy is through the use of Far Infrared Ray (FIR) technology on a regular basis through equipment like the Vital Dome. The international fast-food chain has announced it is launching the development of 3D bioprinting technology capable of creating chicken meat in a partnership with 3D Bioprinting Solutions research laboratory in Moscow, Russia.

The so-called meat of the future, was dreamed up in response to the growing popularity of a healthy lifestyle and nutrition, the annual increase in demand for alternatives to traditional meat and the need to develop more environmentally friendly methods of food production, the press release read.

According to a study by the American Environmental Science & Technology Journal reported in the release, growing meat from cells can cut greenhouse gases 25-fold, and use 100 times less land than with traditional meat.

The printing method reportedly uses chicken cells and plant material to reproduce a product similar in taste and texture to an actual KFC product, complete with breading and the iconic 11 herbs and spices.

A final product is slated for testing in fall 2020 in Russia.
