A heart attack and cardiac arrest survivor wants women to be aware of the signs which show their heart might be in trouble.

Tracy Healey is a fit and health 55 year old who eats well, doesnt smoke and generally leads a healthy lifestyle.

But earlier this year she suffered both a heart attack and a cardiac arrest after not recognising early warnings signs.

Tracy, who lives in Corwen, is now joining cardiac nurses at the North Wales Cardiac Centre to urge other women to keep an eye out for the telltale signs that their health could be in danger.

While both men and women can both experience the same common symptoms when experiencing a heart attack, early indications that youre unwell tend to be different for each gender.

Tracy said: I ignored the indigestion type pain that occurred in the night. It was only when the worsening discomfort started to move down one arm, and I awoke feeling very unwell with clammy skin and worsening pains around 4am that I decide to seek medical help and it was a good job I did.

Heart attack symptoms vary from person to person, and can include chest discomfort or tightness, pain that spreads to left or right arm, neck or jaw, back or stomach, unexplained sweating or shortness of breath.

Only around half of the women who have heart attacks, experience the constrictive chest pain typically associated with a heart attack. Typically, women tend to more commonly experience heartburn-like discomfort, neck or back pain, or nausea.

Tracy said: I never thought that I would ever have a heart attack at 55, I am generally fit and healthy I dont smoke and had been out for a nice walk the day before the incident with my family.

I do have a family history of heart disease but I have never had any symptoms suggesting I had a heart problem until now. I did not have the classic symptoms of a heart attack that you see on TV, like a crushing type chest pain.

My symptoms were different to that, having a heart attack never crossed my mind. My pain felt like mild indigestion at first, I went to bed but did not sleep for long as the pain got worse and kept waking me up. I began to feel hot and It was only when I started to get an odd discomfort in my arms that I thought something was not right and Id better seek medical help. Im still shocked about the whole thing.

After struggling with the digestive pain she experienced for around four hours, Tracy visited Wrexham Maelor Hospital Emergency Department to seek help.

On arrival to hospital my chest discomfort got worse, I began to feel generally unwell and this is when my heart stopped beating and I had a cardiac arrest.

Luckily I was in the emergency department at the time and the staff began CPR. I was then transferred by ambulance to the North Wales Cardiac Centre at Glan Clwyd where I was told that one of my coronary arteries, which is a blood vessel that feeds blood and oxygen to my heart muscle had blocked and was restricting blood flow.

Thankfully the team at the North Wales Cardiac Centre were quickly able to unblock the coronary artery by inserting a stent through my wrist, allowing blood to flow back to the heart muscle.

Anne-Marie Angel, Coronary Care Nurse at the North Wales Cardiac Centre, said: Heart attack symptoms vary from person to person. Common signs include chest discomfort that feels like pressure or tightness, pain that spreads to left or right arm, neck or jaw, back or stomach and some may feel sweaty or short of breath.

Women are more likely to get symptoms including back or neck pain, indigestion, heartburn or nausea. These symptoms are often easy to ignore and are passed off as something else.

We also know that women may be less likely to seek medical help or treatment despite all the warning signs and this unfortunately can dramatically reduce the chances of survival.

Luckily Tracy decided to seek medical help in time to receive rapid treatment, which is essential for a good recovery.

Tracy said: I am so very grateful to the staff at both Wrexham Maelor, Glan Clwyd Hospital and the North Wales cardiac centre, for the care I have received.

Everyone has been so reassuring, kind and supportive and I cant thank them enough.

If I could send one message out to the public of North Wales, it would be dont ignore your chest pain like I did, call 999 and get medical help as soon as you can, I almost left it too late.

While Physical Activity Levels Drop During the Covid-19 Pandemic McGill University Health Professionals Respond with a Summer Family Fitness Program -…

MONTREAL, July 14, 2020 /CNW Telbec/ -A recent study of over 450,000 smartphone users indicates that daily physical activity levels have fallen substantially during the worldwide pandemic. Public health strategies, essential for containing virus transmission, also appear to reduce daily steps by up to 49% among individuals surveyed from 187 countries.

The health professionals at the McGill Comprehensive Health Improvement Program (CHIP) in Montreal have developed a summer Family Fitness Mission to engage grandparents, parents, and their children to exercise together regularly. The web-based six-week program is free (sponsored by Veterans Affairs Canada) and during the pandemic all Canadians are invited to join Veterans and their families in this mission to get healthier by moving more.

Previous Missions have demonstrated average increases in daily physical activity of 30% or more, thereby significantly improving sleep quality and success at losing weight. The online platform has been tested with doctors and other health professionals, Canadian government employees, and the military. Many individuals continue to use the site for years after they first register.

Dr Ilka Lowensteyn, an Associate Professor of Medicine at McGill, and the lead kinesiologist on the Mission noted, "The Mission is fun, challenging, and competitive by having families track their daily physical activity on a leaderboard and virtual map." Family support, regular tracking, and making the program fun are three essential components used to motivate individuals to increase their healthy lifestyle habits, including regular exercise.

Mission results have been published in several medical journals including*

Can Virtual Reality Help Us Connect Better During The Pandemic? – Forbes

Happy couple on the beach breathing fresh air at sunset

In North America, as winter is fast approaches, everyones worried about another COVID-19 lockdown. Social isolation will once again be on everyones minds. AARP Innovation Labs released Alcove, a virtual reality app that enables friends and family to stay connected for Oculus Quest.

Increasingly, with extended times spent indoors, everyone can feel disconnected.

Theres only so much video conferencing anyone can do. Talking about each others day and feeling like you are forcing conversations may not be the optimal way to spend time with your loved ones.

Families need fun. Not everyone can play the type of video game that our children like to play. How to establish a bond between you and your mother, who might be living 3000 miles away? How to enable grandparents to take your children on adventures when they may not be able to go out because of pre-existing health conditions?

Alcove came straight from AARP Innovation Labs to help families go on adventures together in virtual reality worlds modeled after the real world. As we venture further into all corners of the world, the idea is that as the world is feeling closer to us day-to-day, we live our lives together and apart, distributed on different continents and in other countries.

Video conferencing doesnt connect us on a human level. Its playing together or having shared experiences in the world that connects us and brings us closer together.

Rick Robinson, Vice President of AARPs Innovation Labs, says, Alcove allows people to truly break down the barrier of isolation is pretty remarkable. Some people naturally question whether its too complicated or advanced, but based on feedback and our extensive testing with consumers young and old, thats not the case at all.

Robinson suggested that Alcove allows for a much richer way to communicate with one another than current video chat experiences.

On Zoom or other video chat, you can catch up and talk about your day in a very flat way while in VR you can do so much more you can meditate together and travel the world together. You can play games in a completely immersive way.

In the virtual reality world, instead of being immersed inside one experience together, logistically, its easy to switch between experiences. This allows family members to explore different experiences to find what they like the best. Repeating experiences is easy. For instance, building a group meditation habit between a few adult family members is easy and feels immersive.

Robinson says, It is an environment that we like to refer to as your family corner in VR, primarily because of the aesthetic. When you enter, you feel like youre in a home with different rooms you can walk through, taking in all kinds of experiences that surround and envelope you.

Although everyone has an avatar inside Alcoves virtual worlds, the worlds are modeled after real worlds with 360 immersion. With heightened sensory experiences inside the VR world, the experiences can feel calming, soothing, and emotional. This helps to form real bonds between family members.

Cezara Windrem, Innovation Catalyst at AARP Innovation Labs, and Creator and Producer of Alcove, says, "The U.S. military has been using this for a couple of decades now for simulation and training. Now VR and AR are being used a lot more for high-level simulation training, educational programs, and more across industries because of its potential to create new worlds and immerse you in them in a way that can create new memories and allow your brain to make new and deeper connections with the content around. So, we're looking at VR as this complete 360-degree canvas that you are immersing yourself into, and it can be painted with any data information or media. And what's more, you can bring people in there and connect."

When you look at how humans connect, comfort and safety are usually the foundations for real connection. This is why Alcove purposely designed the 360 immersive experience to start from the home's foundation, where most of us find safety and security. It is also designed to engage family members who might be consistently living in their worlds inside the same house.

Windrem says, "Think of Alcove as a magical space that is built at a human scale. You walk in, and by walking in, I mean, you put your headset on, and you're in, and you're looking around, and you feel at home because the environments are built to connect with what you're used to on a daily basis. There's a more modern feel to it. As you started walking around on your own or with your dear ones, inside there, you can start navigating and going into different rooms, which are not your regular home environment rooms, but magical spaces that bring amazing experiences to life."

In the U.S., one of the most significant childhood moments bonding with family is to play board games such as checkers, go fish, etc.. While playing, you are talking with your family, you are cracking jokes, and leaning into joyful moments. Alcove sets the scene for real bonding time with your family.

Cezara Windrem adds, Alcove is a family platform. Were hearing from virtual reality gamers and non-gamers that Alcove is an amazing place to connect with their family members. People from across all age groups are enjoying it.

Alcoves focus on health and wellness allows families to think mindfully about building a collective healthy lifestyle. Families can build healthy habits together inside experiences within the app. They can also watch out for one another and create emotional bonds linked to health and wellness experiences.

Windrem says, "While Alcove is not a clinical tool, socialization, or lack of socialization, can be a contributor to dementia and other similar issues. It's logical that if you could provide a tool that promotes socialization, it could help reduce the risk of dementia."

As virtual reality applications move away from gaming into helping people improve their daily lives, people will use it to build a healthier lifestyle and stronger connection to each other and the world around them. As technologies progress, more immersive experiences will involve the integrating different technologies: virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and holographic. It presents a new frontier for technologists to experiment and create new mediums to improve peoples lives.

Windrem says, VR can bring human connection to whole new levelsthrough its power to connect people with each other and the world in immersive ways, which may have been impossible in the past through traditional mediums. This is particularly relevant today, as our society battles the pandemic, social distancing separates us physically from our loved ones, and more and more adults experience social isolation and loneliness because of it.

The Goopification of grapes: why ‘clean wine’ is a scam – The Guardian

Cameron Diaz gives a happy sigh. Im really excited, she says to her friend Katherine Power. On the table are two bottles of their new wine, Avaline, launched mid-July.

We were mad for a while, adds Diaz. You were a little bit more mad than I was. You had some real anger.

Anger? About wine?

When Diaz and Power decided to make their own wine, they discovered theres more to it than fermented grape juice. No transparency, no labelling, says Power, so shocked by what she found, she threw out all her wine.

The pair, speaking on Instagram, say they became determined to make a clean, chemical-free wine and are now, according to their publicist, on a mission to bring transparency to the wine industry.

Theyre not the only ones. Out of nowhere has come Good Clean Wine, which pairs with a healthy lifestyle; the Wonderful Wine Company, which offers wellness without deprivation; and Scout & Cellar, a multi-level marketing company that boasts of its clean-crafted wine and intends to disrupt the wine industry and do better for the planet, among others.

Dr Creina Stockley sighs when she hears this over Zoom. Ive been in the industry for close to 30 years and this comes up periodically, just under different names minimal intervention is one she remembers its a marketing exercise.

A pharmacologist and lecturer at the University of Adelaide, Stockley is a world authority on wine additives and processing aids, the heart of this issue.

Unlike the food industry, winemakers dont have to list ingredients. This has opened a door for opportunists, who profit by claiming that other wineries fill their wines with noxious chemicals (they dont).

The clean wine companies are chasing a lucrative prize a piece of the $52.5bn wellness market. A Scout & Cellar recruitment video notes 68% of consumers will pay more for products if theyre free of ingredients perceived as bad; disparaging the competition is good marketing. Its also working; the company reportedly made $20m in 2018, its first year.

Strangely, for companies committed to ripping the lid off the wine industry, the clean wine gang is pretty quiet about where their own wines come from, and most declined to be interviewed. Where many wineries love giving encyclopaedic detail about the hill where their grapes are grown, for example, the Wonderful Wine Company simply says its white comes from France.

People are very interested in origin stories, says Brian Smith, CEO of Winc Wines, which launched the Wonderful Wine Co in May, but the modern consumer is looking for how does this fit into my life?

Winc Wines, founded by Smith and Geoff McFarlane, is one of the USs most sophisticated online direct wine businesses. Asked how Wonderful Wines offer wellness without deprivation, Smith says they use organic grapes wherever possible and dont manipulate their wines.

Which is an interesting claim, because wine doesnt make itself. If you drop Vitis vinifera grapes in a tub and leave them, they ferment, but what youll get is vinegar or cloudy, sour wine. Winemaking is both art and science and, over centuries, winemakers have learned to prevent taints and spoilage, from using sulfur dioxide as an anti-bacterial and antioxidant, to dropping egg whites into the wine to remove harsh-tasting tannins, a process known as fining.

Yet only 40 years ago, a wine could be good one year and horrible the next. Since then, an explosion of microbiology, chemistry and viticulture research has driven a quality revolution.

Todays winemakers have an array of yeasts, antimicrobials and fining agents to choose from. Some function as ingredients that go into the wine, like extra acidity to perk up grapes from warm regions. Others are processing aids, mostly used to take things out of the wine. Some have terrifying names, like polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP), but its the same binding agent found in aspirin tablets. Its sometimes used to reduce colour, to achieve pale pink ross. Such aids are legally defined and heavily regulated, and they dont stay in the wine.

But all this research has also allowed commercial winemakers to create bland, homogeneous wines that taste the same each year, regardless of vintage variation. In the US, some mass-market red wines have grape concentrate added the best known of which is Mega Purple to give extra colour and sweetness. Its illegal to add concentrate in the EU, where nothing can be added that changes the essential nature of a wine.

Many wine lovers are appalled by such practices, which render terroir the origin, or sense of place redundant and the backlash has led to a new category: natural wines. These are made by the nothing added, nothing taken away principle, usually from organic grapes.

But between natural and mass-market wines lies a vast and varied world. Just because winemaking tools exist doesnt mean people use them wineries dont spend money on things they dont need and artisanal winemakers, in particular, pride themselves on their hands-off approach. Stockley says, in any case, that modern wine needs less intervention than in the past, partly because winemakers have learned to make things smarter and better, but mostly because of improved grape growing. Some winemaking aids are no longer permitted; until 1997, animal blood could be used for fining. Ferrocyanide, which Scout & Cellar claims is a common additive in commercial wines, was a processing aid thats no longer legal.

So why not list ingredients? Dr Ignacio Snchez Recarte, secretary general of the Comit Europen des Entreprises Vins (Ceev), which represents the EUs wine sector, says its because wine isnt made by an industrial process. While, say, a commercial bakery works to a strict, unchanging recipe, winemaking decisions change each vintage. Asking a small winery to update labels every year would impose an economic burden.

If you have anything in the wine with potential allergenic effects, you are obliged to indicate that on the label, however, and he adds the wine sector understands that modern consumers want transparency. Legislative change is under way in the EU.

I expect that by the end of 2022 there will be labels on wine, he says, adding they will either be traditional labels or e-labels. They will list ingredients, not processing aids nor will they show if the producer used pesticides.

Now youre opening up a can of worms, says Jamie Goode PhD, wine writer and author of wine textbooks. You cant grow grapes from Vitis vinifera without spraying eight to 14 times a year. The problem is mildew and then, at the end of the growing season, rot.

One of wines paradoxes is that the most prized, expensive grapes come from regions prone to fungal diseases, which can only be treated with commercial pesticides or, for organic growers, applications of copper sulfate. Its all about the concentration, says Goode, adding: There are strict regulations concerning their use and concerning residue levels that are permitted. Wine is one of the most regulated and safe products there is.

Promising ultraviolet light therapies are being trialled that may eliminate pesticides forever but, for the moment, there is another potential way to avoid them. Its to farm in drier, warmer areas with less disease pressure, like Languedoc in southern France birthplace of the Wonderful Wines white.

There are plenty of warm regions producing grapes at lower cost. California also has a grape glut right now and theres more wine in tanks than many wineries know what to do with. Some use the best for themselves, then quietly sell the rest to whats known as the bulk wine market, where everything from commodity grapes to certified organic wines are sold. Wineries also use their excess to make on-demand wines for buyers. In a twist, these exclusive wines often come from big wineries; despite being thoroughly conventional, they can even be marketed as minimal intervention or clean, because these are meaningless terms.

Its a type of wine known as private label, which can be highly profitable beca
use the seller doesnt have vineyards or wineries to maintain. Most winemakers talk obsessively about their land and heritage (try and stop them), so if these details are missing or vague, the wine could be private label, although some mass-market brands also omit this information.

Diaz and Scouts Avaline, for example, is silent on who makes it. Then theres Scout & Cellars $25 Gallivant chardonnay, whose web copy says its made by a fifth-generation family winery founded in Monterey in 1883, but not which one. In contrast, consider the $18 Wente Vineyards Morning Fog chardonnay, which has a downloadable technical sheet explaining the region, soils and winemaking. Coincidentally, its also made by a fifth-generation family winery founded in 1883 in Monterey.

Unfortunately, all wine, however its made, contains a dangerous chemical: alcohol. No matter how sustainably the grapes are grown nor how consciously its made, there is no wine that wont deliver a hangover if you drink too much.

Wine is not a wellness potion. Its a snapshot of time, a manifestation of the place and the people who made it, which works a special magic when paired with friends and food.

When it comes to clean wine, the only thing being cleaned is your wallet.

Long-term exposure to traffic noise may impact weight gain, Oxford study says. But not in the Netherlands – Innovation Origins

Transport noise is a major problem in Europe. Over 100 million people are living in areas where road traffic noise exceeds levels greater than 55dB, the health-based threshold set by the EU.

And its not just bothering your ears. A new study by the University of Oxford and the University of Leicester has found a connection between traffic noise and obesity. Long-term exposure to road traffic noise, such as living near a motorway or on a busy road, was associated with an increase in body mass index and waist circumference, which are key markers of obesity. The study was published today in the journalEnvironmental Research.

While modest, the data revealed an association between those living in high traffic-noise areas and obesity, at around a 2% increase in obesity prevalence for every 10dB of added noise, says lead author Dr. Samuel Yutong Cai, a senior epidemiologist at the University of Oxford. The association persisted even when we accounted for a wide range of lifestyle factors, such as smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, and diet, as well as when taking into account the socio-economic status of both individuals and the overall area. Air pollution was also accounted for, especially those related to traffic.

Oxford University says this is the largest study to date on noise and obesity, looking at data on over 500,000 people from three European biobanks in the UK, Norway, and the Netherlands. Links between noise and weight were found in the UK and Norway, but not the Netherlands cohort. The researchers do not give any real cause for this difference, but they suspect that the Dutch research group (12% of the total) has a different balance between urban and rural participants. Possible reasons include that rural residents may have to rely more on cars on daily living and hence be less physically active. Another possible contributing factor is that exposure misclassification of road traffic noise in rural or intermediate areas may be lesser as compared to urban areas, where geography is much more complex.

While the study is unable to confirm a causal relationship, the results echo those from a number of previous studies conducted in other European countries. It is well-known that unwanted noise can affect the quality of life and disturb sleep, says co-author Professor Anna Hansell, Director ofthe University of Leicesters Centre for Environmental Health and Sustainability. Recent studies have raised concerns that it also may influence general health, with some studies suggesting links to heart attacks and diabetes. Road traffic noise may increase stress levels, which can result in putting on weight, especially around the waist.

On the individual level, sticking to a healthy lifestyle remains a top strategy to prevent obesity, says Dr. Cai. However, at the population level, these results could have some policy implications. Environmental policies that target reducing traffic noise exposure may help tackle many health problems, including obesity.

Oberlin Nutrition serves up shakes while promoting healthy lifestyle – The Morning Journal

Tucked next to a laundromat in Oberlin sits a nutritional shop.

The shop, small and lined with pale walls, gives off a vibrant and bright contrast to the wooden decor when the sun beams inside.

Oberlin Nutrition owners Adrian Carter, 28, and Maria Pitts, 19, specialize in nutritional health and physical fitness. According to Carter, the shop gives people within the city an option of healthy shakes and teas while promoting a healthy lifestyle.

"We give people a healthier option because there's not a lot of that out there especially that's quick and on the go. You can come in here and grab something really fast thats good for you and gives you all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals you need, Carter said.

Popular menu items include mega teas, which are teas with an energy tablet and collagen for healthy skin and nails. With shake flavors such as Oreo, birthday cake, cake batter, frosted animal cookie, the 90 shake flavors give customers a chance to satisfy their sweet tooth.

Youre going to get something that tastes like dessert but also gives you the good stuff at the same time, Carter said. "Its killing two birds with one stone. Its satisfying a sweet tooth but giving you nutrients."

According to Carter, the shop sees more local community members come out as opposed to students despite being near Oberlin College.

Our location is special because theres nothing like us around here, Carter said. "People come in from Oberlin and theyre excited."

"I just think its unique here. Especially if you want a healthy option it stands out on that alone.

During the novel coronavirus pandemic, the business has kept up with all additional and necessary sanitary measures and precautions, including cleaning everything at the top of the hour and taking away seating.

The capacity for the shop is 10 people and is now open for online ordering. Originally, online carryout was opened for the pandemic when takeout was only available, according to Pitts.

We still do that because so many people utilize it. Im not sure if itll stay but people seem to like it, she said.

Along with the online ordering, Pitts said she has seen a strong increase in business since the pandemic began.

Everyone asks how it affected us, but I dont know what to say," she said. "It was unexpected, but people came more than ever.

With such a focus on health, Carter said he believes people started coming to the shop to become healthier as a precautionary measure for COVID-19.

What is a healthy lifestyle? – Dos, don’ts, benefits …

Weve heard it many times before, but do we really know what a healthy lifestyle means?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, which implies that this concept goes beyond the existence or lack of existence illnesses.

Consequently, more than just healthy living, we must talk about a healthy lifestyle that includes food, physical exercise, preventive healthcare, work, the relationship with the environment, and social activity.

A healthy lifestyle is not achieved overnight, but we have to be consistent. You have to follow a good plan based on healthy habits. By doing this, our bodies and minds will get in to a rhythm that will eventually become second nature. Its common for people to have routines that are only a little healthy, or not healthy at all. Maybe thats the way it is, because its easier and more comfortable than doing it correctly (or at least thats the popular belief).

Due to the great misinformation that Dr. Google provides, it can be difficult to know what are the best avenues to take to create a healthy lifestyle. In this blog, you will find everything you need to get you moving towards a much healthier lifestyle as soon as possible. if you are unsure where to start, you have come to the right place!

From the perspective mentioned previously, it can be determined that some of the habits necessary to lead a healthy lifestyle are the following:

Its generally recommended that you should get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. Walking at a rapid pace is enough as long as it gets your heart rate up!

The NHS states: One way to do your recommended 150 minutes of weekly physical activity is to do 30 minutes on 5 days every week.

This allows you to not only burn excess calories and strengthen muscles and bones, but also helps to control blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose levels. In addition, this contributes to a decrease in stress levels and helps you sleep better. It also helps you acquire a state of relaxation, avoid mood changes, improve self-esteem, and attain a state of personal satisfaction. It can also be a good way to develop a healthy social activity when the exercise is practiced with others.

At Adia, we love practicing exercise and writing about it. We are especially fans of yoga since two of our co-founders are yoga teachers.

In our blog, you can discover an effective sequence of asanas in our blog post Yoga poses for fertility and learn more about the benefits of physical activity by reading Exercise for fertility..

A healthy diet is achieved by including all the foods that appear in MyPlate (which replaced the classic food pyramid in 2011), but in the right proportions and with the correct quantity. The main aim should be to maintain the nutritional needs of the body and give us enough energy for the day.

MyPlate is divided into four sections of approximately 30% grains, 40% vegetables, 10% fruits, and 20% protein, accompanied by a smaller circle representing dairy, such as a yogurt cup or glass of milk.

If you are interested in nutrition, you will find lots of nutritional facts and fertility boosting foods in our blog about the fertility diet plan.

Together with our nutritionist advisor, we have also written other blogs such as vitamins for fertility or what is folic acid good for?.

These blogs are not only important for those seeking help on their fertility journey, the information there also is useful as a general guideline for your overall health.

Your social life is actually a fundamental aspect of your health . Social isolation can lead to a gradual and irreversible deterioration of physical and mental abilities, including physical disability and dementia.

Being happy with others is essential for you as an individual. If you are in a relationship you can check our blog on what makes a relationship good, but first make sure you are happy with yourself. These self-care tips may help you achieve your goals.

This does not only refer to the existence of mental illnesses, but to the state of emotional and psychological well-being. Good mental health is necessary to maintain and develop cognitive abilities, social relations, and for coping with the personal and professional challenges of daily life. Stress, fatigue, and anxiety are, among others, some of the signs that indicate that your mental state is not entirely healthy.

In our blog, we also wrote about the yoga benefits for mental health and mindfulness meditation. We warned you before, we are big yoga fans!

You will be surprised to know the amount of people that live to work instead of working to live or maybe not maybe you are one of them! So, please enjoy your free time, and use it in an efficient and pleasant way.

If you like listening to podcasts, weve made a selection of some of the best podcasts you can listen to in 2019. If you prefer a good read, you can check our list of recommendations for the best womens health books.

Its not only your body that needs exercise! Exercising your mind will help keep it working well and avoid cognitive deterioration and the appearance of dementia.

Try to give your brain a regular workout with exercises that enhance memory, attention, ability to focus, and learning new topics. This will help you avoid, or at least delays these issues.

Great news sex is not only fun but also good for your health! It is great for your cardiovascular health and relaxes our minds. However, to protect yourself from sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and syphilis, you should always practice safe sex, using condoms if you are having sex with multiple partners of a partner with a history of STDs.

It is necessary to sleep well and for an adequate number of hours at least 8 hours a night. This will help you rest and generate energy for the next day. Insomnia is a cause of high blood pressure, heart disease, and mental, metabolic and endocrine diseases, so try and switch off before heading to bed

Not sticking to all of the above will obviously have negative effects on you. One of the key areas of an unhealthy lifestyle are making choices that involve toxic products.

Tobacco, alcohol, and drugs have a very negative impact on health. There was a popular belief until recent years that one daily drink of wine or beer was totally fine, but new studies have proven that even this can influence our health in a negative way.

There are many products to which exposure, occasionally or continuous, can result in a serious risk to our health. The environmental pollution of cities is considered one of the most important risk factors for health.

Quality of life is related to the following aspects:

The benefits of a living healthy lifestyle are almost limitless. Having healthy habits and routines will allow us to stay active and achieve our goals. In doing this, our internal satisfaction will increase and will remain at the highest level.

We must not forget that if we are not healthy, our chances of doing activities that we like are drastically reduced.

With healthy habits, we will only see benefits, both for ourselves and for the society that surrounds us.

If you had to choose between living a healthy lifestyle or a life that is not healthy, you would probably choose the first one. This is because we all like to feel our best. Many people confuse living a healthy life with being a slave to a diet or exercise routine. To think of it like that is a big mistake. Dont think about it in this way, because you will feel put yourself under unnecessary pressure and will want to avoid a healthy lifestyle due to fear.

Healthy lifestyle habits do not consist of extreme diets to lose weight, but instead help you make healthy, daily meals. If you take up a diet to lose weight,
it will often consist of eating less than your body needs. With this option, you will also be banned from many foods. On the other hand, if you follow a healthy and balanced diet, you will not have to discard any food from your diet or feel hungry from skipping any meals during the day.

As for the physical exercise that you do, you have on one side the extreme fitness routines and on the other healthy physical activity. The first one can be difficult to maintain and can actually have adverse effects on your health.. Diseases in the form of muscle and joint injuries can appear in your body. They could even be more serious if you perform these activities at a pace that is not appropriate for your fitness level. On the other hand, if you practice physical exercise according to your current condition, you will improve your health.

If your goal in the short term or in the near future is to get pregnant, you must live a healthy lifestyle. For women, it can help improve ovulation and uterus health, both important for conception. For men, a healthy lifestyle will help increase the quality of their sperm.

You can read more about sperm quality and motility in our blog about How to increase sperm count.

Once you become pregnant, you should continue taking care of yourself. Inside your body, your baby will live for nine months. During that time, it will feed on what you transfer through the placenta. Therefore, if you eat badly, the baby will eat badly. If you smoke, the baby smokes. If you sleep little, the baby will not rest as it should.

The best option is to have a series of healthy habits before, during, and after pregnancy. In this way, you will achieve a healthy family environment for the baby and future child to develop correctly. In addition, you will instill in them, and educate them about a healthy lifestyle that will serve them forever. It is proven that if healthy habits are started from an early age its easier to continue them. Therefore, you will be leaving your son or daughter a very beneficial legacy for the rest of their life.

If you are in the initial step of your fertility path or you are having trouble to conceive, Adia offers free services such as the ability to ask questions directly to fertility experts, guided meditation audios for fertility and plenty of information about nutrition, exercise and everything you will need to help you in your fertility journey.

Research Reveals that Being a Centenarian Depends a Lot on the Environmental Conditions – Gilmore Health News

Scientists are as curious to find out more about the secrets of longevity as anyone. New research conducted by scientists of Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, Washington State University, revealed that the secret to being a centenarian depends a lot on the environmental conditions. Based on this study, scientists suggest that although hereditary factors have an irrefutable effect on longevity, the living environment contributes significantly to determining life expectancy of an individual.

Mortality rates of Washington State from 2011 to 2015 were utilized for conducting this research and it included information of around 145,000 individuals living up to the age of 75 years or more. This study, which was published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, revealed that individuals residing in more walkable areas get naturally involved in the habit of walking more and are consequently prone to living longer than others.

The study also suggests that a lively and interactive social community is crucial for increasing the possibility for people to become centenarians. People who live in mixed-age social communities tend to interact with each other more and such communities create a lively social environment with youngsters and children living around senior citizens.

Another interesting finding of the study is the fact that higher socioeconomic status also contributes to longevity. According to study results, a higher percentage of people living in urban areas and enjoying a higher socioeconomic status reached the age of 100 years. So Seattle and Pullman were found to have more centenarians than other areas for this reason.

Based on the findings of this study and an analysis of earlier research on hereditary factors of longevity, researchers concluded that environmental factors, community, and socioeconomic status play a vital role in determining whether an individual would be a centenarian or not. Major variables of the study included walkable environment, age groups in the community, socioeconomic status, pollution, and greenery in the environment. The eye-opening study findings made it clear that if an individual lives in a healthy and happy environment he/she is likely to live up to or more than 100 years regardless of his/her genetic predispositions.

The researchers further created an interactive map based on the study findings, highlighting areas of Washington State with a higher percentage of people reaching the age of 75 years or above. Based on the findings of this study by the medical students of WSU, life expectancy can be increased making it possible for more and more individuals to be centenarians. By creating a healthy and supportive environment around us, we can all expect to live much longer. Economic stability, better health care facilities, and a pollution-free environment are vital for a long healthy life. Similarly, factors like social support and healthy lifestyle also play a vital role in increasing life expectancy.

Rich Collection of Spices Are they Good or Bad for Your Health? – Chiang Rai Times

Have you ever heard your science friend talking about the health benefits of spices? Well, if you have, then you need to know that they are right. Spices have been proven to be a great source of essential nutrients that help our body function properly. With the right amount added to your meals, you can enjoy a ton of health benefits that you didnt believe were possible before.

Most people question whether spices are good or bad for your health. We mean, looking at a powder, what would you expect? But our expectations are wrong because these powdered ingredients do much more than just added flavor to our meals.

Today in this article, we will discuss some of the significant health benefits that spices have to offer to our bodies. These benefits are backed up by research carried out by renowned universities around the globe, so they will, for sure, persuade you to use more spices in your meals.

More than a hundred different spices are used by individuals around the globe to add flavor and texture to their meals. Studies havent been carried out on all of these spices, but it is believed that they all come with several health benefits to offer.

Some commonly used spices have been tested out significantly and prove to be a great source of natural vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Here is how some of them help offer major health benefits.

Cinnamon does much more than add that pleasant musky aroma to your food. Extracted from the cinnamon trees bark, this splendid spice has proven to help with high blood sugar levels. Doctors often recommend individuals suffering from type 2 diabetes to add a pinch of cinnamon to their drinks to benefit from it.

The thing about cinnamon is that it adds a sweet taste to your food items without adding sugar to it, which is hard to process for diabetic individuals. Other than that, it also helps in reducing your cholesterol level, which is also a result of high blood sugar. So adding it to your controlled diet plan can be an addition to a healthy lifestyle.

Turmeric is an Indian spice commonly used in almost all their dishes, which is trending as present as one of the superfoods in the market in terms of the number of health benefits it offers to our bodies. The benefits of turmeric are endless. The major benefit of turmeric is its ability to help fight inflammation, which is the reason for discomfort and major illnesses in most cases.

Curcumin is a compound that is found in turmeric in abundance. Studies carried out by Johns Hopkins suggest that a combination of a chemotherapy drug and curcumin was more effective in shrinking drug-resistant tumors as compared to the usage of chemotherapy alone.

Other studies suggest that curcumin helps fight inflammation in the brain, which is the leading cause of multiple neurological disorders such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease. It has also helped individuals fight against mood disorders such as anxiety and depression.

Have you ever heard your grandma tell you to drink ginger tea when feeling nausea? If yes, then you will be surprised to find out that she is right. Ginger is a tropical plant that has been widely used worldwide by our ancestors for centuries to treat stomach upset, diarrhea, and nausea.

Studies suggest that ginger helps calm pregnancy-related nausea, vomiting caused due to chemotherapy, motion sickness, and an upset stomach. The good thing is that ginger products are widely available in all supermarkets. You can get ginger tea, lollipops, candies, or regular dried powder to add to your meals.

Most of you out there are well-aware of the usage of garlic in our everyday mealsa small bulb-shaped spice with a pungent smell that isnt appealing at all. But at the same time, the number of health benefits that little bulb has to offer overrides the smell that one has to bear when adding to your meal.

As we grow older, our arteries tend to get filled up with fatty acids. The overuse of fats in our diets supported by other factors such as smoothing, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure contribute to the deposition of fats in our blood vessels. Over time these deposits create a major blockage in our arteries, which leads to heart diseases.

Studies carried out by health departments at different universities suggest that garlic helps protect you from heart diseases. The compounds found in garlic help add flexibility to your blood vessels to the deposits, move down to the cells instead of staying in place and causing a blockage. You can add it to several savory dishes to increase its intake.

Spices have several surprising health benefits to offer to our bodies. With their rich antioxidant content and other useful compounds, they assist our bodies in carrying out their everyday functions effectively. But the major question is, how should you consume these spices to get the most benefits out of them?

The first thought that comes to mind is by using it to add flavor to our meals. It sounds like a great idea and works in most cases, but the problem is that most of us add spices to our food while cooking. In most cases, the direct heat, such as during grilling or frying, removes or lowers the autoxidizing power and renders them less useful for our bodies. Therefore it is best to practice microwave cooking with spices because it helps enhance the antioxidant levels.

If you are not much of an eater but still wish to add the health benefits offered by spices to your diet, supplements are the way to go. Certain strictly regulated and tested commercial supplements are packed with the same benefits as spices. But we recommend that you always consult your doctor before using any supplements because there is no way of knowing which might be inside the pill.

Spices tend to offer several health benefits to human bodies. But that doesnt mean that you should start consuming them in excess to prevent all the diseases and become healthy. That is not how it works. Excess of everything is bad, so you need to consume them in a controlled manner to benefit the most from it.

‘The way consumers are using health and wellness products is evolving’: Kerry spots opportunity for gut health in foodservice – FoodNavigator.com

Gut health diets are starting to form part of the consumer lexicon, according to research released by Kerry in 2020, Nutrition in Foodservice Unlocking Opportunities in a Changing Consumer Landscape in the UK.

The report found 16% of UK foodservice customers are interested in or already following the gut health trend, compared to an average of 25% across Europe as a whole.

While interest among UK consumers in this category lags behind some EU countries, it is expected to become more important in the future International consumer observations suggest this is an area that will continue to grow. With the COVID-19 crisis reinforcing the importance of health and wellness, it has never been timelier for brands to spotlight genuine immune-supporting ingredients and nutrients, noted Elaine Druhan, marketing manager of foodservice at Kerry, the maker of Wellmune and GanedenBC gut health ingredients.

According to Kerry ConsumerFirst research from 2019, immune system support was already the number one reason European consumers purchase healthy lifestyle products. As consumers take a more proactive approach to health in the wake of COVID-19, introducing immune health on foodservice menus especially in the form of immunity-supporting beveragescould unlock opportunities for European outlets, she continued.

Kerry business development manager Laura Collins told FoodNavigator that this trend is in its infancy in foodservice. But the opportunity should be viewed in the context of the overall conversation around gut health.

Whats happening in the immunity product market currently is best understood as a process that looks more like an acceleration, rather than disruption. While many companies are focusing on a spike in demand for immune health products, interest in immune health solutions isnt a new phenomenon. Whats evolving is the way consumers are using health and wellness products, the types of products they want and the increasing focused on product and nutritional benefit claims. Understanding that will help products and brands stand out.

Indeed, Collins noted that some operators have already begun to react well to this by celebrating food with gut health supporting ingredients as well as highlighting new and existing items on their menus, she said, pointing to the launch of a Nuttin But probiotic-fortified oat product as case in point.

Foodservice and out of home channels have typically made less progress on healthy reformulation efforts than grocery suppliers, as evidenced by the focus Public Health England is now placing on OOH in its obesity strategy.

Druhan told this publication that people are now looking to OOH outlets to deliver healthier foods either through reducing certain nutrients like salt, sugar and fat or fortifying with positive nutrients.

If we were to take two examples of functional need states; gut health and immunity, we can see there is an increase in interest and demand, she suggested.

Kerry research from 2019 demonstrated that 19% of consumers seeking to change their diet are doing so to improve their gut health. Further proprietary research from Kerry has shown that most consumers - 68% - are interested in consuming food with immunity boosting benefits at breakfast while 36% say theyd like such a drink as a mid-morning snack and 38% would prefer it mid-afternoon.

Aligning functional beverage menus to these times may help foodservice outlets capitalise on the growing demand for products with gut health or immunity benefits, especially amongst consumers seeking both convenient and healthy choices, Druhan noted.

Additionally, 45% of global consumers try to find the healthiest option when they eat out, Collins elaborated, citing Global Data research. Meanwhile, a paper from Datassential found 78% want restaurants to offer more options containing functional ingredients.

This highlights the potential of probiotics, given the high levels of awareness they command. Kerry research shows that over half (54%) of consumers worldwide are aware that probiotics can promote good digestive health, while 46% know they offer immune system support, Collins concluded.

Druhan said beverages were a natural starting place for foodservice operators who are always looking to differentiate.

Dairy-based drinks, plant-based alternatives and juice drinks are the most active categories featuring immunity claims and are also already key products in foodservice.

We believe that the beverage category is the most applicable category for foodservice operators to play in initially and limited time offers prior to the pandemic are evident of this, with products such as matcha latts and protein fortified smoothies on the market.

When developing products to meet this growing niche, Kerrys business development experts advise product developers not to stray too far from familiar ground.

They have to be mindful of ingredients that consumers are familiar with and combine with those which have proven health benefits. Our research has found that there are three key parts to a winning fortified beverage: the welcome mat, the halo and the hero, Druhan elaborates.

Welcome mat ingredients are ones that are familiar and will entice the consumer, such as strawberry or coffee. A halo ingredient is a trending ingredient which can have an associated benefit to the immune system, such as lemon or ginger. The hero is an ingredient that is scientifically proven to support immunity or gut health.

Collins believes that the addition of immune-boosting ingredients should be made within the context of a products overall nutritional profile. "Adequate nutrition and appropriate intakes of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals are essential to maintain the bodys natural defences against disease-causing viruses and bacteria, she explained.

"There are a number of immune health ingredients that are general nutritional components. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is necessary for a variety of biological functions with antioxidant status being the primary role. [Meanwhile] probiotics are live microorganisms which when administered orally for several weeks, can increase the numbers of beneficial bacteria in the gut and modulate systemic immune function.
